Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage
On June 26, 2009 the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) added the Dolomites to the World Heritage List. Their “scenically monumental beauty” and “geological and geomorphological importance” were categorized as unique in the world. Inclusion on the world heritage list is the world’s highest form of recognition for a natural site, a sort of Nobel Prize for natural assets. The best known summits in the Dolomites, such as the Odle/Geisler Peaks (3025 m) in the PuezOdle/Geisler nature reserve, the Drei Zinnen (2999 m)
in the Drei Zinnen nature reserve, the Schlern (2563 m) in the Schlern-Rosengarten-Latemar nature reserve, and the Marmolada (3343 m), to mention only the most important, are among the most beautiful mountains in the world. From a geological, botanical and scenic point of view, the Dolomites are unique and thus cannot be compared with any other mountain range in the world. For this reason they are among the most beautiful and valuable landscapes across the globe that have been recognised by UNESCO.

Welcome to Funes/Villnöss in the heart of the Dolomites The ALPINE PEARLS Association – for the promotion of sustainable tourism through environmentally-friendly transport – is bringing together partner regions and communes right throughout the Alps.
Mayor Robert Messner
Chairman of the Tourism Association Franz Messner
This network of “pearls” that move carefully through the Alps is being developed into a strong touristic brand that allows people to get around gently.
How Alpine Pearls were born ALPINE PEARLS is the result of two interrelated EU projects, which were prompted by an initiative of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry, Environment and Water, and taken one step further to become a coordinated EU project. The focus of the project is the creation of inno. vative, sustainable services for tourists, which combine tourist attractions with the advantages of getting around with environmentally friendly means of transport. Our objective over the coming years is to create an attractive and environmentally-friendly transport service made up of small, Mobile elements. This concept ensures that our visitors and residents can get around conveniently within our valley, as well as in neighbouring towns. 4|
Dear Guests and Residents of the Funes/Villnöss Valley, we would be delighted if you would make use of our soft mobility programme and explore our pristine natural surroundings through one of the various different winter activities, which include winter hiking, snow shoe walking, tobogganing, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing or touring ski!

Dear Visitor, we are pleased to welcome you to our crosscountry skiing, tobogganing and hiking area. Parking at Malga Zannes/Zanser Alm costs € 5,00 per day / € 4,00 in Ranui. The innovative, digital information totems are available at all main points of the valley. They give information on hiking trails, activities, events and the public transport service. The touch screen user interface allows everyone to get the information easily.
We are sure that you will understand that this additional income is the only way that we can ensure that the facilities are maintained to a professional standard.

Cross-Country Skiing Getting active in the great outdoors For those that prefer things a bit quieter in winter, but still want to enjoy some sporting action in the great outdoors, cross-country skiing is just the thing. Be it alone, in a couple or a group, with or without an instructor, with narrow skis on cross-country trails you can enjoy the unspoilt and romantic natural surroundings and drink in the wonderful landscape of the Funes/Villnöss Valley. The wonderful impressions of our snowy natural surroundings will live long with you, as will the relaxing effect of the cross-country skiing. Furthermore it has been proved that cross-country skiing is not only fun, but also keeps you fit, since no other type of sport boosts the body, circulation and physical condition so comprehensively yet gently - especially in the healthy climate at altitude.

Snowshoe walking – lots of fun, no stress If you follow the basic rules you will not endanger yourself and will also protect the natural surroundings
1.

2.
4.
Compared with other types of winter sports, the equipment is simple. “Moderns” are best suited to Alpine use: They are made from shatter-proof hard plastic, provide grip on ice too and weigh only 1.7 kg. Price from approx € 120,00. In addition you will need sticks for balance, for example ski poles with large baskets.
Even if the instructors claim that any hiker can walk with snowshoes, beginners should not risk walking alone, but instead should join a guided snowshoe walk. It is important to be fit.
Please take hazards seriously: always check the avalanche and weather reports, and when planning your walk take into account that the days are shorter in winter.
Wildlife biologists believe that slow snowshoe walkers disturb Alpine wildlife far less than fast skiers. Nevertheless, as a matter of principle, wildlife protection zones should be avoided.

Tiso/Teis Mineral Museum Tiso/Teis geodes The Mineral Museum is housed in the clubhouse (Vereinshaus) in the centre of Tiso/Teis in the Funes/Villnöss Valley. Museum experts have used contemporary educational techniques to create an originally-designed exhibition that feeds the imagination. The exhibition not only contains the famous Tiso/ Teis geodes, but also minerals from other areas within the Alps in which the collector, Paul Fischnaller, goes digging. An introductory film provides the uninitiated visitor with a comprehensive overview of how the crystals that are displayed in the museum are created and how they are composed. The museum shop stocks a wide range of literature on the subject, as well as souvenirs, jewellery and healing stones. The items on display are not for sale, and cannot be swapped. New, interesting findings are always being added to the exhibition by the collector, Paul Fischnaller. Tiso/Teis geodes can measure up to 20 cm in diameter. Geodes and agate almonds are embedded in their mother rock, a quartz porphyr tufa. Up to seven different minerals can be found in wonderful crystal formations inside the hollow cavity of these “druses”. Amethyst and quartz crystals stand out from the others due to their transparent purity, as does agate, with its almost geometrical coloured rings. Every geode cavity boasts its own little secret crystal garden, which is now on display in the museum.
Tiso/Teis Mineral Museum A display of the famous Tiso/Teis geodes, mountain crystals and other Alpine minerals. Opening times > Sun before Easter to Sun after All Saints’ Day > Tue–Fri: 10 am–12 noon / 2 pm–4 pm > Sat–Sun: 2 pm–5 pm > Closed on Mondays Guided tours upon reservation Phone +39 0472 844 522 info@mineralienmuseum-teis.it www.mineralienmuseum-teis.it

Puez-Odle/Geisler Nature Park House The Puez-Odle/Geisler Nature Park House in St Magdalena in Villnöss brings visitors closer to nature in the valley and is the perfect place to take time out. The exhibition area “Touch mountains” focuses on the key topic - the geology of the Dolomites. The Puez-Odle/Geisler nature reserve has been designated the “Dolomites site office” because it is home to all of the rock types, deposits and weathering that are typically found in the Dolomites. The “Nature’s treasure trove” on the second floor contains plenty to discover: animal fur, bird‘s eggs, feathers, footprints, droppings, teeth, antlers, medicinal herbs … all of which - and much more - is on display and can be touched! The “Conquering Mountains” room is primarily dedicated to alpinism. The world‘s probably most famous alpinist, Reinhold Messner, comes from Funes/ Villnöss Valley. He explains about his experiences in the mountains in a short film. The “Puez-Odle/Geisler nature reserve film” is also shown daily in the mountain cinema. Trebich 1, 39040 Funes/Villnöss Valley Phone +39 0472 842 523, Fax +39 0472 842 677 www.provinz.bz.it/naturparke, info.pg@provinz.bz.it Opening times From 30th December 2014 to 28th March 2015 and from 2nd May to 31st October 2015, Tuesdays to Saturdays from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm, and from 2.30 pm to 6 pm. Also open on Sundays in July and August. The Nature Park House is shut on bank holidays. Free entry! 36 | Info A–Z
Special Exhibition from 30th December 2014 until 28th March 2015 “The return of the brown bears” The brown bear is one of the largest species of bear. This mammal has a massive physique and a broad, strong head with round ears and small eyes. Like humans, they walk on the soles of their feet, touching the ground with their heels first. While fleeing, they run very fast and can achieve 45 kilometres per hour over short distances. Full-grown male brown bears of the Alps come up to over 200 kilogram of weight. The consequence of the brown bear hunting in Europe was that the animals come out only at nightfall. This special exhibition shows the live of the brown bears nowadays with the help of fantastic pictures and realistic objects.
