Winkler’s Hiking Tip: Paternkofel & Three Peaks of Lavaredo

Via Ferrata Innerkofler-De Luca/Three Peaks: Hike and possibility to stop at a refuge for lunch Circling South Tyrol’s legendary trademark, the Three Peaks of Lavaredo (Tre Cime) is compulsory when on a hiking holiday in Val Pusteria. There are various possibilities for this endeavour. The route we have selected for you here, the Innerkofler-De Luca Hiking Trail, offers the most spectacular views. The via ferrata leads you to the top of Paternkofel mountain and then around the Three Peaks. Brace yourself for breathtaking views over the Dolomites of Sesto, for historic atmosphere on the trails of the “Gebirgsjäger” (the alpine troops during World War I) and for a cosy get-together in the numerous mountain huts located directly on the trail. Route: From the parking place near the Auronzo cabin (2320 m), walk towards Northeast over the scree slopes on the Southside of the Three Peaks. Shortly before the Lavaredo cabin (2344 m), turn left towards North and towards the Paternsattel (2454 m). From here, continue along the scree ridge towards Northeast. Following the ridge, you will first come across a tunnel and then to a section secured with wire cables; this section partly requires basic climbing skills. Across a rock window, you climb upwards to the right, to the Passportenscharte (2589 m). A ribbon leads you to the left, to the East side of the Paternkofel South ridge and to the embrasure. Now, cross the scree towards Northeast and the Passportenkar and then the Gamsscharte (2650 m). Now, you have the Paternkofel summit at your left and the East

ridge at your right. Here, enter the steep flank where layered rock and scree-covered bands lead you right to the summit of Paternkofel (2744 m).From the peak you descend the same way, until you reach the Gamsscharte. Now turn towards North. A furrow leads you down (A/B) towards Galleria Paterno, the long unlit war gallery. Across the tunnel, you walk towards the Dreizinnen cabin. Near the end of the tunnel, you see the so-called “Frankfurter sausage”, a prominent, needle shaped rock tower. Once you have passed the tower, you easily reach the Dreizinnen cabin. From the Dreizinnen cabin, follow the marked, lightly descending hiking path towards Forcella Col di Mezzo (2315 m) West of the Western peak – the North walls of the Three Peaks always in sight. Walking from the cabin towards Southeast, you reach your starting point.

Starting point: Auronzo cabin Altitude difference: ca. 763 m (per ascent and descent respectively) Distance: 10 km Hiking time: ca. 8 h Advice: When descending from Paternkofel over the via ferrata Innerkofler-De Luca you will cross a tunnel, which is about 600 m long. It is highly recommended to take along climbing equipment, including a headlamp. The via ferrata is recommended for experienced climbers. You will need sure-footedness, a head for heights and arm strength. Make sure to check the weather forecast for the area.

Winklerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hiking Highlight: Around the Three Peaks

Auronzo cabin/Lavaredo cabin/Dreizinnen cabin/Lange Alm cabin/Auronzo cabin Starting point for this unique hike is the Auronzo cabin at 2320 m above sea level. Along the Southside of the Three Peaks, follow path no. 101 towards Lavaredo cabin (2344 m) and then ascend on the narrow path on your left towards Paternsattel. At 2454 m above sea level, you will enjoy a spectacular view over the 500 m high North walls of the Three Peaks. Here starts the beautiful Northern section of the hike, which rewards you with a fantastic view of the Three Peaks. The path ascends slightly while you walk past the foothills of Paternkofel until you reach a crossroad. Here, you follow the signs towards the Dreizinnen cabin (2483 m). Once you have reached the cabin (after about 1.5 hours walk), it is possible to climb the Toblinger Knoten behind the cabin (to climb the summit, you need climbing equipment). After a short rest, continue towards the typical South Tyrolean Lange Alm cabin (markings no. 105). Walking along the Westside of the Three Peaks, you will reach the starting point, the Auronzo cabin. Starting point: Auronzo cabin Path numbers: 101, 105, 4 Dolomites high mountain trails Altitude difference: ca. 400 m Distance: 9.5 km

Hiking time: ca. 2.5 h Advice: Rewarding hiking path, spectacular views of the Three Peaks. Until Paternsattel it is an easy hike, feasible also for beginners.

WINKLER’S HIKING WEEK Our multifaceted weekly hiking and active programme leaves nothing to chance. It is our mission to plan hikes, which hold something for everyone, and to offer a lovingly packed rucksack including advice and recommendations for nature enthusiasts who won’t be able to help falling for the summer charm of Val Pusteria! On Monday, we start with a hike to the earth pyramids in Perca and the alpine plain Gönner Alm, an easy hiking tour of 4.5 hours for families. On Tuesday, it is off to Lavarella cabin on the alpine pasture Kleinfanes in the Dolomites (about 4 hours walk from the starting point Pederü). On Wednesday, a hike of 6 hours to Giogo d’Asta is on the programme: a more ambitious hike to the summit. On Thursday, we hike from Valles to the legendary Picco della croce (Wild Cross Peak): a 7-hour long hike, which is challenging but rewarding with its spectacular nature and mountain views. We end Winkler’s Hiking Week on Friday with an easy stroll across forests and meadows to the Kradorfer cabin above S. Maddalena in Valle di Casies (about 2.5 hours).

WINKLER’S BIKING WEEK Yes, we’re here by bike!

The Val Pusteria valley holds a great variety of biking trails for active bikers and friends of the outdoors. Our diverse weekly programme provides lots of inspiration and unforgettable experiences as well as expert knowledge from our biking guides. How about a mountain biking tour to Prato Piazza on Monday? From Dobbiaco, it is only a 2.5 hour ride. On Tuesday, it is off to Vandoies where you can stop at the renowned cheesery Capriz (a trip of about 5 hours) and on Wednesday, we bike to the picturesque village Campo Tures (about 5 hours). On Thursday, we visit the adventurous Herrensteig at Plan de Corones where downhill junkies can enjoy pure adrenaline on a descent over 7 km! On Friday, we take it easy and bike 20 km from S. Lorenzo to the Pfaffenbergerhöfe hamlets (a tour of 2.5 hours). Get more information at the Plan de Corones Outdoor Center for additional adventurous downhill tours – for all those who would like to get to know this thrilling sport or those who simply would like to get to know it better! Our starting point is the Valley Station in Riscone. From here, we take the trail to Santo Stefano where we follow the forest path 12a to S. Martino. The forest path no. 12 brings us to Santa Maria di Sares, to the Plaiken hamlet and Blei de Fora and Frena, located shortly before S. Vigilio. From here (at 1449 m), a steep trail (no. 2) leads up to the head of Riscone (here, there are two short sections where we need to push our bikes) and finally to the top of Plan de Corones (2275 m). Now the path descends sharply to the Geiselsberger cabin where we turn left to the forest path and soon reach the Pracken cabin. The forestpath no. 2 leads us to Valdaora di Sotto. At the railway underpass, we turn left and arrive at our starting point Riscone.

The small but fine hiking regions Klausberg and Speikboden in Valle Aurina are worth a visit. Discover this paradisiacal region of Valle Pusteria and its idyllic and pristine nature! The Nature Park Vedrette di Ries-Aurina in Valle Aurina, the so-called “valley of 80 three-thousanders”, offers spectacular scenery and fantastic mountain panorama.

SPEIKBODEN The Speikboden cable car and the Sonnklar chairlift (up to 2400 m) are open from Saturday 6th of June 2015 until and comprising Tuesday the 6th of October 2015. Speikboden is known to be an excellent thermal mountain and an El Dorado for paragliding fans! Those who do not dare to participate in a tandem flight, can enjoy the breathtaking sunrise and sundown walks before the magnificent backdrop of the rustic valley!

KLAUSBERG Open from 16th of May 2015 until 18th of October 2015. The cable cars are operating daily from 8.30 – 12.20 a.m. and 1.00 – 5.15 p.m. Hiking on Klausberg is ideal for families because many paths are also accessible with chariot. Alta Pusteria International Choir Festival From 24th until 28th of June 2015 the region Alta Pusteria is all about music, when about 90 choirs come together for the 18th time and present folk music and mountaineer songs, spiritual sounds and opera arias in various locations. The event is free of charge and the close to 70 concerts are held in arts centres, churches, castles, cabins or in the open-air against the gorgeous backdrop of the Dolomites of Sesto or other impressive sceneries.

Chestnut roasters, cheese stalls, vans with hot wine and sausages, clothes stalls, leather jackets for sale, cattle sales, a fun or “Luna Park” and of course the festival tent for a cosy get-together. The market in Stegona means bathing in the crowd and diving into an adventure for all senses. An old saying goes: “Those who want to get through winter, have to go to the market in Stegona.” You do not have to go to the “Oktoberfest” in Munich or the Prater in Vienna. Shopping, celebrating and living – you can do all of that also on the largest market in Tyrol.

Autumn Magic in Val Pusteria The Farmers Market in the city centre of Brunico with fresh quality produce from various farms is held from May to October every Friday from 8.00 a.m. till 12.30 p.m. In September and October restaurants, locals and hotels around Brunico offer traditional specialties and an entertaining programme.

Collect unforgettable impressions in the fascinating world of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage! Via Brunico we drive towards Dobbiaco, from there to Cortina d’Ampezzo over the Falzarego Pass and the Pordoi Pass as well as the Sella Pass to Ortisei and Bressanone. We will have a bit of time at Lake Misurina, in Cortina, at the Falzarego Pass, the Sella Pass and the Pordoi Pass where we will take lunch. We stay about 1 hour in Ortisei, where we have the possibility to take the cable car up to the high plain of Alpe di Siusi (not included in the price). We recommend to bring along a wind stopper and sun protection!

This tour brings you over the spectacular panoramic road to the largest glacier in Austria and then to Lienz (via Brunico, Heiligenblut, Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Höhe at 2400 m, Fuscher Törl, Mittersill, Felbertauern). At 9 a.m. arrival in Heiligenblut; here we have about 45 min. of free time. At 10.30 a.m. arrival at the Kaiser-Franz-Josef house where we stay about 3 hours before we continue to Fuscher Törl (short rest). From here we return home via Mittersill and Lienz (short stay). Advice: in case of bad weather we stay longer in Lienz instead of Fuscher Törl. We recommend to bring along wind breaker and sun protection!

Barkeeper Gabor’s Summer Cocktail Tip Fresh and fruity: Caipi-Orange This Brazilian cocktail hit is also extremely popular in South Tyrol – especially in its gentler, more original variation with Cointreau and orange wedges. Our expert Gabor reveals how it is prepared best. Ingredients: • 5 cl Cointreau Orange Liquor • 1 orange • Cane sugar • Lime juice • Crushed ice • Beaker Cut an orange in eight pieces and place the pieces with a bit of sugar (about two tea spoons) into a cup. Crush the pieces with a cocktail pestle, add Cointreau and Lime Juice (sweetened lime juice), fill up with ice and stir.

Winter holidays in the region around Plan de Corones are ideal for a ski course. The local ski school takes on also the smallest snow cruisers. For kids under 8 the ski pass is free if at least one adult buys the pass for the same time period. There are already group courses for kids aged 4, the ski rental Giggeralm offers top equipment also for the smallest kids and the Kids World at Plan de Corones holds lots of fun for the offspring!

With only 3.00 € per person and day, you can already cover possible cancellation costs in case of accident, illness, death or other major events concerning the person with the insurance, his or her children, siblings, parents or grandparents. Arrival by Car From Brennero follow the highway towards South or from Bolzano towards North, then take the exit Bressanone – Val Pusteria, drive through the valley towards Brunico – Dobbiaco – San Candido and after about 30 km you arrive in S. Lorenzo shortly before Brunico. Vital & Spa Hotel Lanerhof, Mantana: Turn left towards Alta Badia and drive about 2 km into Val Badia. Turn right towards Mantana, passing the local church. Here you find our hotel.

Lorenzo, at the Eastern village entrance, turn towards Santo Stefano – Plan de Corones, pass underneath the railway crossing and turn left about 1 km up towards Santo Stefano. Arrival by Train Take the train via Munich-Innsbruck-Fortezza from Brennero or from Verona via Bolzano-Fortezza. Change here towards Val Pusteria till Brunico. We are glad to pick you up directly at the train station of Brunico or of S. Lorenzo with our hotel shuttle; simply let us know your scheduled time of arrival. Special: With the Europe Special of the DB Bahn you can travel from 39.00 € from anywhere in Germany – comfortably and avoiding traffic jam.
