Welcome The growth of Deeping United Football Club since its inception in 2018 has been huge, starting with three teams; it now has 39! Reflecting the national trend, the female provision is the fastest growing part of the Club – Deeping United being the footballing home to over 150 women and girls. They are looking for even more players. If you are interested in joining their happy family get in contact with the club. Later this month 16 parents and coaches of Deeping United U10 Girls will be tackling the Tough Mudder obstacle course at Belvoir Castle, and 22 girls will be doing a one-mile Mini Mudder. Deeping United Football Club is passionate about promoting and contributing to local good causes, and as well as raising funds for the Club will also be raising funds for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in memory of Steve Gavaghan, the loving father of one of the U10 girls who lost his battle with cancer last year. If you would like to donate to their muddy cause, head over to: https://gofund.me/31637eb2 Judy Stevens 3

Thanks to a Biffa Award of £750,000, Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust has been able to purchase 128 acres at Bourne North Fen and will restore this farmland into a wet fenland. This part of the county is one of the driest areas in the UK, but also one with a high flood risk. Bourne North Fen will help regulate water supply during shortages and absorb floodwaters in times of spate. A new system of reedbeds will improve the quality of the Bourne Eau river before it enters the River Glen and increasing amounts of carbon will be captured by the wetland soils and plant life. It will link important wild places nearby including Willow Tree Fen and create a healthy wetland supporting a rich diversity of wildlife including rare species that once flourished in the Fens such as the bittern, common crane, bearded tit, greater water parsnip, European eel and spined loach.

Cllr Bob Broughton picks the name of the winner of the March competition for a full body fitness assessment and taster session with Glenn Roberts of Training Made Personal - Sally Stillingfleet who rightly answered that it was Albert Einstein who said ‘Life is like riding a bicycle. In order to keep your balance, you must keep moving.’

Selected for the finals of the Natural History M u s e u m ’ s Photographer of the Year 2022 was this image of a splashing M o o r h e n . Captured by local landscaper Iain Toombs of Deep in Gardens, the photograph was one of the top 100 from a selection of 58,575 entries. Said Iain, ‘I am absolutely over the moon knowing that the judges deemed that image worthy of the final round. All those hours researching the bird’s habits, planning, hide-building, then waiting for a perfectly calm day to capture a split-second really paid off.’

Whilst sorting through a local deceased estate, Jessica Wall of Stamford Auction Rooms spotted a waste paper bin made of four stunning early 19th century brass heraldic plaques, each written in French with hand painted decoration and dated 6th July 1821. Fortunately there was no damage to the plaques and their detailed catalogue description and an estimate of £500£800 ensured plenty of interest.

Juliet Mills Chairlady of The Church Ladies Fellowship presided at the AGM and presented cheques to the Mens Group (£200) Church Hall and garden (£250) Lighting the Church Spire (£200) and a representative from Lives £200. A cheque for £150 was also sent to the Air Ambulance. (l-r Brian Thornthwaite, Juliet Mills, Jan Fisk, Revd. Mark Williams, Lives rep.)

With an autobid on the-saleroom platform of over £1,000 the bidding took off, barely giving the patient telephone bidder the chance to come in, as it slowed down above the £5,000 mark and with the other internet platforms going quiet they finally got their chance to bid. A few minutes later the bidding between the telephone and the internet had got to £9,500 on the-saleroom, the telephone took it to £10,000, and after moments to let the underbidder have a chance to bid again the hammer came down, ‘Sold £10,000 to the telephone’.

Evenin’ all Policing in the 50s and 60s was in many ways encapsulated in the long-running TV serial Dixon of Dock Green. Deeping had its own Dixon – he was PC Joe Smith. Born in Colleyweston, he saw service in the RAF in the Second World War when he was stationed in Louth and survived being a rear gunner. He moved to Deeping with his wife, Nell (nee Riggall) and four daughters in 1958. They lived in the Police House on the corner at number 2 Market Place. It was previously a Sergeant’s house and people often referred to Joe as Sergeant. He said with four daughters in the house he couldn’t concentrate for long enough to take the relevant exams!

piece of kit, he mounted many expeditions to try and recover it, and on one such in October 1960 he was accompanied by his children Alan, Marilyn and David. A metallic gleam on the river bed revived his hopes but his catch proved more sinister than a rowlock! It was a 3.7 inch anti aircraft shell, its steel case badly rusted but with the brass proximity fuse and copper driving band in good condition. Said Dick, ‘We were about 50 yards above the bridge, poking about for the rowlock, when Alan spotted the glint of metal in about 18 inches of water. He picked it out with his hand and we all got a bit of a shock when we saw what it was.’ The

Living in the heart of what was then a rural village, the family would be given pheasants and rabbits at Christmas which Nell used to pluck and draw. Nell worked in the butcher’s shop, Mayfields, sited where Briggs Estate Agents are now. This was the era of teddy boys and it wasn’t unknown for Joe to give them a clip round the ear for some misdemeanour, and they thought it was better than being booked and getting a criminal record. However, Joe was strict when it came to abiding by the highway code and he was often at Bourne Magistrates’ Court with motoring offences as well as dangerous dogs and the usual drunks. There was one long-running dispute with William Mulligan of the Harlequin Café in Church Street, who would park on the wrong side of the road in the hours of darkness. Mulligan told the Court that opposite his house was a garage and he often found it difficult to get onto the proper side of the road; no one had ever complained and the summons came down on him like ‘a ton of bricks!’ He was given a conditional discharge on payment of four shillings costs. Resident of 4 High Street, Dick Witt, lost a rowlock from his boat while out rowing on the river. Keen to reclaim this essential

FEATURE shell was handed to PC Smith who informed the bomb disposal officer at RAF Wittering. In 1963 Nell gave birth to a little boy, Paul who had Down’s syndrome. His sister, Margaret remembers, ‘He had a fantastic memory and had lots of toy cars of which he knew all the names.’ Unfortunately Paul, like many Down’s children had a hole in the heart and he didn’t survive an operation to cure it. He died in 1971 at the age of eight but says Margaret ‘We were all so thankful to have had him in our family but he certainly left a big hole.’ In his spare time in 1962 Joe set up a meeting in Market Deeping which was to see the establishment of a youth club. In December 1964 he took part in a film written by Brian Branch and Kenneth Charity and made by students of Deeping Secondary Modern School called In the Long Run. The action-packed film told the story of two boys, played by Tony Martin and Graham Bush, who escaped from an approved school. Following their adventures and after a realistic fight they were captured and led into the Police Station by none other than PC Smith!

Joe and Nell Smith

His three eldest daughters married in quick succession, all in St Guthlac’s Church. These were the days of grand church weddings which followed a similar pattern, with the rector, Revd Davies officiating and Mrs Mathias on the organ. In a magnificent wedding in July 1964 Anne, a hairdresser at Margaret Evans of Church St., Market Deeping, married Ronald Blessett, an architectural assistant of 87 Horsegate. Both had been connected with the Youth Group since its formation and the groom had been a leader. The bride, in a gown of white Nottingham lace over taffeta, was given away by her father. Her bouffant veil was held by a headdress of roses and she carried apricot roses and stephanotis. Her marcasite necklace was a gift from the groom. The bridesmaids, sister Margaret and cousin of the groom, Tina Grace, wore short dresses of apricot lace over net and taffeta with white accessories and headdresses of white leaves, and their silver necklaces were a gift of the groom. The best man was Graham Mitchell (groom’s cousin) and groomsmen and ushers were Arthur Bickers (groom’s uncle) Paul Braddick (brother-inlaw) and Alf Maddison. The choir sang and the organ trumpeted. The bride was presented with lucky tokens by Clive and Malcolm Grace and 18

Elaine Toull (cousins). A reception for over 100 was held at The Georgians after which the happy couple left for a honeymoon on the south coast, the bride travelling in a coral two-piece with white accessories. Maureen (Mo) married Malcolm Butcher, owner of MFB Fabrications of Suttons Lane, in 1965. She wore a satin gown falling into a train with a waistlength veil held be a single satin rose, she carried a bouquet of red rose buds and lily of the valley. Her sister, Margaret and Susan Butcher, the groom’s cousin, were in attendance and wore red velvet dresses carrying balls of white carnations held by white ribbon. The best man was Derek Wilson, cousin of the groom, and ushers were Ronald Blessett and Ken Butcher (uncle of the groom). The church was resplendent with spring flowers, the work of the bride, her sister and the groom’s mother, and the choir was in fine voice. As the couple left the church, the bride was presented with a black cat token by Paul, her brother. After a reception at The Georgians the couple left for their honeymoon, the bride wearing a cream suit with Mo & Malcolm Butcher 1965

FEATURE navy accessories. They made their home in Colleyweston. In March 1966 Patricia, now a telephonist with the Peterborough Citizen & Advertiser, married Jim Colman, an employee of Peterborough City Council, who came from Stanground. Patricia wore a full-length dress of white figured brocade with a train and white veil; her headdress was of roses and the bouquet of deep red roses, white hyacinth pips and lily of the valley. She wore a silver locket and chain, a gift of the groom. Best man was Malcolm Butcher, ushers Ronald Blessett and Ronald Coleman. On leaving the church Paul, who was now getting used to this, and his cousin Nicola, presented horseshoes to the bride. This time the reception was at the New Inn, now The Stage, after which the newlyweds left for their honeymoon, the bride wearing a light blue suit with navy accessories. The couple set up home in Peterborough.

Anne & Ronald Blessett 1964

In 1965 Joe had left the police force and the family moved across the road to 102 Church Street where he started Deepings Advanced Driving School, his motto being ’better be late Mr Smith than the late Mr Smith! However, he missed the police force and rejoined in the summer of 1966 moving the family to Grantham and then to Stamford. Eventually ill health forced Joe’s retirement from the force and he, Nell and Margaret returned to live at 10 Church Gate, Deeping St James. In 1976 he was nominated to fight for a District Council seat for the Conservatives and a year later also became a County Councillor. He fought for a bypass for Market Deeping and maintained an interest in the Youth Group which he had initiated. In September 1973, Margaret married Michael, the third son of Mr and Mrs Chambers of Woodnewton. The wedding was at St Guthlac’s, the bride wearing a Nottingham lace dress with a tiered hem and a short matching veil held in place by a flowered headdress. She carried a bouquet of yellow rosebuds, lilies of the valley and freesias wearing a gold locket which was a gift of the groom. Bridesmaids were Nicola and Rachel Butcher, Jacqueline 20

Pat & Jim Colman 1966

Blessett, and Fiona and Sharon Coleman (the bride’s nieces). They wore full-length lemon and white cotton border print dresses and pearl drop necklaces, gifts from the groom, and carried white chrysanthemums and yellow rosebuds. The best man was the groom’s brother and ushers were Ronald Blessett and Malcolm Butcher. The church was decorated by the mothers Margaret & Michael Chambers 1973 of the bride and groom, the bride and her sisters with chrysanthemums, dahlias and greenery. Mrs Mathias played the organ. After the reception at the Deepings Secondary School the couple flew to Austria, the bride wearing a black-and-white short-sleeved suit accessorised with white. The couple settled in Woodgate, Helpston. Obviously a family man and dedicated to the community Joe was also remembered as a character and could often be found having a pint or two at The Bull. He ended his days in Maxey House in 2004, his wife having predeceased him in 1997. But for Deeping he will go down in the annals of history as ‘our’ Dixon of Dock Green!

PROFILE FEATURE

Linda Hill and the Deepings Literary Festival 2020 I was receiving over 200 emails a day requesting book reviews or blog posts. Unsolicited books arrive almost daily; 31 surprise books are the most I’ve received in one day. Thankfully I don’t watch much television so that affords me extra reading time.

Despite being an obsessive book blogger in my 60s, my reading life didn’t begin well. I have awful sight and I was a late independent reader. I got glasses just before my eighth birthday when I realised those blurred black squiggles were letters and words and had meaning. From then on I was hooked, fascinated by the way books can transport the reader to a completely new world. Like many of my generation, the first book I read entirely to myself was an Enid Blyton – The Ship of Adventure. That book got me hooked on reading and travel and it felt apt that I even went to Antarctica on a ship called the Spirit of Adventure. I read Tess of the D’Urbervilles for A level and became obsessed by all kinds of writing, completing my degree in English and European Literature. My career led me more into the world of books. I was an English teacher in local schools and then went into Local Authority work before becoming an independent Educational Consultant and OfSTED inspector – after all, it’s easier to tell others what to do than have to do it yourself! During that time I was asked by the publishing group Hodder to read and review fiction for KS3 children and write classroom resources for teachers so that’s when I first thought about reviewing. It was lovely as they paid me to sit in the garden and read! Turning 50 I decided life was too short to keep working and ‘retired’. It was then that I was able to read for pleasure again. I joined several book groups on Facebook and saw online that Love Reading 22

(https://www.lovereading.co.uk/) were looking for reviewers so I applied to them and became one of their early team. I joined the Deepings U3A and one of the book groups there and decided I might as well have a go at blogging. I began https://lindasbookbag. com/ in 2015. My first ever blog was about Love Reading and it was awful. It’s had six views in six years! Now I average 200-300 views per day but as many as 500-600 at other times. My blog posts have been seen well over a third of a million times in 202 independent countries or states. Blogging has morphed somewhat from a tentative hobby into an almost full-time job. I have cut back as I was spending upwards of six hours a day setting up blog posts and sharing them across social media like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. I read three or four books a week on average, although some of those might be poetry or children’s books so they take less time. I’m a quick reader thankfully as the requests for reviews never stop. During the height of lockdown in

I don’t blog about books that I don’t enjoy as what doesn’t suit me might be perfect for another reader. It’s so hard to predict what’s going to be a bestseller, although authors like Richard Osman with big marketing budgets behind them are almost guaranteed a top slot. I think readers are surprised that publishing houses pay to have books featured in book clubs like Richard and Judy. For me a perfect book has totally relatable characters, a fast pace or beautiful crafted writing – or all three. Blogging has afforded me all kinds of opportunities from winning awards, making new friends, being on radio shows like BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour and Book Club, meeting authors and taking part in all manner of events such as the Deepings Literary Festival. Indeed, I think it’s wonderful that we have the festival happening right on our doorstep. So many of the events I’m invited to are in London and it’s fantastic to see the Deepings joining the major events. I’d really encourage Deepings residents to come along – you never know, it might encourage you to start your own blog!

Ever thought of teaching? Now’s the time!

‘The Deepings SCITT is a highly valued provider in South Lincolnshire.’ (Ofsted, 2022) We are approaching a decade of high-quality teacher training here at The Deepings and it is great to have the Ofsted stamp of approval as it means we can choose the top talent and develop them into the very best teachers for the children in our county. The recruitment of teachers is always an issue, even more so post-pandemic, and in England, there are now 15000 fewer teachers than there were in 2010 and by 2024 there will be a projected 47000 shortfall.

“Leaders are ambitious for their trainees… expectations are high… trainees attain well.” (Ofsted, 2022)

So, could you be part of the solution? If you have a degree already (however old!) you can train on your doorstep. The Deepings SCITT and its partner schools see our trainees trusting schools and current teaching staff to train them rather than going down the traditional university route. We offer one day a week core training (in Deeping for secondary, or Bourne for primary) with the rest of the week spent training ‘on the job’ with a mentor in your host schools. We have a range of

Friendly faces await!

placements, both primary and secondary, across The Deepings, Bourne, Spalding, Peterborough, Stamford, Boston and a few further afield. We have vacancies for a September 2022 start and we are looking for people who have (or will have) a degree, have a passion for teaching and want to inspire young people to fulfil their potential. We would love you to have a chat with you about the exciting teacher training opportunities available.

Colour pallets Roll over pastel weddings and get ready for some bold splashes of colour. Warm, earthy tones and vibrant colour palettes are on there way for 2022 but if that’s not your style I’m sure with the return of Bridgerton season 2 there’s bound to be a surge in blue inspired weddings and refined decor and details. Think candelabras, elegant cakes and elaborate florals.

Eclectic Lighting Is going to be a massive hit this year from fairy light ceilings, mix match chandeliers to rotating glitter ball installations… statement pieces are going to be dazzling your guests this year!

Hand painted details

Shoes, jackets, stationery, napkins, hand-painted décor details create a unique feel that your guests are going to go nutty over!

Alternative Florals Earthy neutrals are showing popular with tones such as blush, sage, mustard, amber, mauve and orange. The Pantone colour of 2022 is Very Peri so elements of blue/ purple are being introduced. The increasing need for environmental responsibility sees couples choosing to source seasonal and locally produced flowers. Dried flowers are still enjoying their revival and a mix of fresh and dry elements is ever popular. There is a huge demand for real and dried hanging florals above tables, entrances and dance floors.

RAY PAWLETT

New Season - New Energy with Ray Pawlett At the beginning of the year, I wrote an article called ‘New Year - New You - No thanks!’ In that article, I spoke about how many New Year resolutions finish in failure because they are out of sync with Nature and the world around us. In the winter time, Nature is hibernating and we want to do the same. New health regimes are not usually top priority when the daylight hours sometimes don’t reach double figures and the weather is too cold for even the brass monkeys to go out!

In the world of Nature winter time is a period of resting, hibernation and quiet. If we look out of our windows or go for a walk outside now, you can hardly miss the fact that Nature is waking up with new life. After the quiet phase, the plants and animals are just getting on with it. The sap is rising and it’s time to wake up from the winter. So how do we get involved and tune into this feeling? It might start with spring cleaning. Lent or restricting your diet could be seen as an opportunity to spring clean your body. It’s also a time of fertility – farmers and gardeners are getting busy – just like the birds and the bees. Thinking about traditional springtime activities and observing nature is a very good start. Or you could try a more personal approach. In my 30+ years in the world of healing and helping, I have made many observations. One is that most people actually know what they need for a healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle. They just don’t do it.

You can pay people a lot of money to skirt around the issue but deep down most people know what they need – to give up smoking, eat less sugar, slow down, do some cardio or whatever. To quote the band Pink Floyd – ‘No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.’ Well, here it is. Reading this article will have already triggered the question in your mind about what you need. There is an inner dialogue along the lines of ‘Well, I know that I need to do (-------), but I can’t because of (------).’ Bang! There’s your starting pistol! Don’t think about it – just get out there and do it! Join the renewing forces of springtime and get on with whatever you need to refresh your physical, emotional and spiritual vitality. If you would like to explore this kind of work or any aspects of Tai Chi, shiatsu, meditation and healing more deeply please contact me via email ray@ki-ways.co.uk or give me a ring on 07413 620344 35

Passes Down the Line by Steve Holt

FOOTBALL

The President of The Deepings Lions Club (CIO), Steve Holt, has just had his first book published on amazon.co.uk as an ebook and a paperback. Steve, for his sins, became Chairman of Peterborough United and an elected Director of The Football League over 20 years ago. His book, entitled Passes Down The Line, is a light-hearted look at football written from his own experiences and family connections to three professional football clubs: Lincoln City, Manchester United and Peterborough United. It is a nostalgic narrative of the game through the ages with amusing anecdotes from Victorian times to the present day. The sport that shaped his life started with the author’s Great-great Uncle Fred who was a Lincoln City player in the 1890s. The saying that ‘old footballers never die they just don’t score as often’ is particularly true of this not-so-famous, but still fascinating footballing relative. Steve’s football journey takes him through the highs and lows, the pain and pleasure, and the tears and laughter that football fans everywhere will understand. With humour he follows his teams in the beautiful game from being a supporter on the terraces to adopting a board director position which included his chairmanship of Posh. It’s is a chronicle of how the simple game of football touched one family and impacted its future generations. The title also gives a nod to his playing position of left-back, as this funny tale still Passes Down The Line. The book is designed with eleven staves or chapters that are standalone stories which influenced his life and football upbringing. The stories will make you smile: once he left two tickets on his dashboard at London Road, when he came back to his car someone had smashed his windscreen and left two more! Whilst he was at Lincoln City someone threw a £2 coin on the pitch and the police started to investigate but Steve thought it was a legitimate takeover bid. A snapshot of the book includes ‘Stave 1 – Munich, Malmo and Me’ referring to his date of birth in 1958 and much more importantly covers the Man Utd air disaster and the FIFA World Cup. When Steve was a young boy in his pram, already being a good dribbler, Lincoln City’s manager was wheeling his shopping trolley across the supermarket car park when he noticed a young lady struggling with her shopping basket whilst pushing Steve in his pram. He stopped and asked: ‘Can you manage, dear?’ To which Steve’s Mum replied, ‘No way, you got yourself into this trouble; don’t ask me to sort out the mess at Lincoln City!’

l-r Barry Fry, Director of Football Peterborough United, Steve Holt, Bob Symns, Posh Club Ambassador Stave 2 is about his Great-great Uncle Fred (GGUF), the Red Imp. At the time and for a brief period the team was recognised as Lincoln City Swifts – swift to exit any league that they entered. In fixture number 17 of the 1897-97 season on 23 January 1897 GGUF played away at Meadow Lane and suffered his heaviest defeat of the season, being trounced 8-0 by Notts County. The feeling was they were lucky to get nil. The Lincoln goalie was nicknamed ‘Jigsaw’ as each time the opposition got into the box he went to pieces. Stave 7 is entitled the ‘Thoughts of Chairman Now’ about Steve’s time as a Director and Chairman of Posh, where he states that you simply need three things to run a professional football club: money, money and more money. It was at a time when the club were at a low ebb and you could give the ticket desk £40 and say: ‘Two please’, and they would reply ‘Certainly, sir, would you prefer midfielders or defenders?’ He dealt with many famous footballing names in his time at Peterborough, employing the likes of Bobby Gould, David Seaman and Mark Wright. Bobby was a really nice guy and as manager of Wales in 1995 said: ‘I’ve just named the team that I would like to represent Wales in the next World Cup – Brazil.’ continued >

41

FOOTBALL At the end of the 2001/2 season Terry Bly was his guest of honour at the match. He scored a record 54 goals in Posh’s inaugural league season in 1960/61. He played 88 times for them and scored 81 times, a phenomenal record. Steve asked Terry how this Posh team compared to the Peterborough side of the 60s. Terry thought for a moment and then said: ‘I would have to be honest, Steve, and say that I think it would be a draw, but then some of us are getting on for 80!’ The foreword to the book is written by Barry Fry and Sir Alex Ferguson. The book closes by bringing the reader up to date with the changes that the pandemic has brought to the game. It is a fresh perspective, and a good-humoured record of a pastime Steve loves, which is also the nation’s favourite game. This is a must read for all football cognoscenti but also enthrals non-football enthusiasts from a friends and family perspective. To find out more hilarious tales about Barry and the three clubs Steve was involved with I would recommend that you purchase Passes Down The Line. Steve Holt Steve is speaking to various groups within the Deepings at the moment and is always happy to come along free of charge to entertain your club, group or society.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Protect the Environment? Yes that’s you! says David Denman The wonderful wealth of wildlife in this country is matched only by the wealth of legal protection that law-makers have devised to protect it over many decades. There is a raft of legislation all aimed at protecting species and habitats that are declining or are subject to threats of damage or loss. Now you may be thinking that an understanding of wildlife law is really something for farmers and landowners who encounter rare and amazing wildlife. However, as many species of wildlife are happy to live in our houses and grow in our gardens, the legislation that protects them is relevant to us as well! We all know that birds are protected. British birds have been protected since 1954. A wide range of protections depend on the species but the bottom line is that all birds, their nests and eggs are protected by law at all times. Rare birds (the so-called Schedule 1 species) such as golden eagles have the highest levels of protection and cannot be disturbed whilst they are building or using their nest. However, Schedule 1 also lists more frequently encountered birds such as barn owls, which we have here in the Deepings, and Black Redstarts which nest in urban Peterborough. So what happens when a garden bird starts to nest in a bush you intend to cut down? You will need to leave the bush well alone until the brood has fledged then you can remove the bush. How about when you see a bird starting to 44

build a nest in another bush that you intend to cut down – you will need to leave the bird to complete building its nest until the young are fledged. Care must be taken as many of our common birds have two broods a year and some even have three! The gap between the young flying the nest and the nest being used for the second brood can be very short indeed. The best approach, as with most wildlife issues, is to plan ahead and leave the bush in place until the winter when the bush can be removed safely, which is kinder to the bird and the local bird population overall. Trees themselves are protected if they are in a conservation area or if they are subject to a tree protection order (TPO). If you are a tenant then the landlord’s permission should be sought first. Remember if you fell a tree in your garden and this causes injury or damage to a neighbour then this is your liability. Felling will have implications for wildlife and people and except where dangerous should be a last resort but other interventions such as pollarding and pruning can remove dangerous hanging branches or reduce the weight or impact of a tree without actually killing it. It is always best to seek the advice of an accredited tree surgeon or consultant. Bats are another well-protected group. They like houses and can roost in lofts, soffit boxes and behind hanging tiles. Many people are totally unaware that they are sharing their house with a colony of bats. All species of bats and their roost sites and their tiny entrance points are protected by law and you need to take advice before you work in, or near, a known bat roost.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION One of the intricacies of bat law is that roost sites are protected even when the bats are not in residence. It is therefore important that everyone involved in construction, maintenance or pest control should know what bat signs to look out for (bats leave crumbly dry droppings) and what to do if they find bats during work. All bats eat insects, usually caught when flying at night, and as insects become less numerous bats need all the protection they can get, especially when you consider that they only have one baby a year. Many unusual species are also fully protected by law including several rare and vulnerable butterflies and dragonflies. Other stranger creatures are also protected, including the rare Medicinal Leech and the spectacular Stag Beetle. A large number of rare and localised fungi and lichen are also protected, several without English names which can only be identified by

expert ecologists. And what about rare plants, including orchids? Well, there is a full list of Britain’s rarest and most threatened plants species (known as Schedule 8 species) which receive full protection. At the other end of the spectrum, animals and plants which are invasive and present a threat to native wildlife (i.e. Japanese Knotweed and American Crayfish) are also listed and the legislation is aimed at preventing their spread into the wild. And what about the badgers? Well, they have a piece of legislation all to themselves (Protection of Badgers Act 1992) and this is different from other wildlife legislation in that it protects the badger and its sett, not because they are rare or threatened, but to outlaw badger baiting and to prevent cruel ill treatment of badgers. We have local links with wildlife law. The best place to learn about wildlife law is the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (www.jncc.gov.uk)) which is based in Peterborough! It is a public body which, amongst many other ecological duties, undertakes a review of which species should be protected or should no longer be protected every five years in a process called the Quinquennial Review. And for trees the Woodland Trust (www.woodland trust.org.uk) based in Grantham provides valuable information. So just like ecology, which never stands still, neither does the law that protects it.

BIRDS

Cryptic & Beautiful Words and Pictures by William Bowell

Despite the popular religious verse, not all things bright are beautiful. Or rather, some things not so bright are beautiful. In the bird world, we often think of the female of the species as being dull and brown. This has obvious evolutionary benefits, such as being able to sit on a nest unnoticed from predators. The bold and brash plumages of males might draw unwanted attention if sat on the nest. Indeed, among Phalaropes, where roles are reversed, and females leave the dowdy males to tend to the nest and young; it is the females who are the show offs with their show-stopping colours. But I digress, as I often do long-suffering reader. In some species, both sexes are alike as they want to avoid the gaze of the likes of you or me (and predators of course), and neither are lookers. Or are they? If you look very, very hard and pay extra attention to detail, these often-hidden gems are just as stunning as their more colourful counterparts. A mix of shades of brown, orange, black and white make for a cryptic and beautiful plumage but also keeps the bird hidden from view. One such cryptic camouflaged creature, the Bittern, has made a remarkable comeback over the past three

Bittern- amazing plumage lets this large bird sneak around in reeds unseen. 46

decades. It is a heron species, which lives in reedbeds and has a particular liking for Rudd. It remains mostly unseen but, in the spring, males famously give their presence away with an incredible gulping ‘boom’ at dawn and dusk. In my pre-teens I remember it made national news that there were less than ten pairs left breeding in the country. The RSPB and other wildlife conservation organisations have made a tremendous effort to restore reedbed and wetland habitats and such is the success we now have booming Bitterns breeding around the Deepings!

Short-eared Owls might be easy to spot on a post but when roosting in tall grass, they become quite a challenge.

From the big to the small: the Jack Snipe. Any patch of damp grass with puddles can attract this delicate winter wader and they are renowned for being one of most secretive species in Britain. They have such a faith in their invisibility, that they don’t move a muscle unless you nearly tread on them. And that’s not an exaggeration, dear reader!

Their subtle plumage, designed to blend into the reeds, makes them a real challenge to spot but when you do see one And once they have flown up from they are way more than your feet, you are left thinking, just a brown bird. They ‘How did I not see that?’ With are stocky birds, on long the thermal imaging becoming green legs with massive affordable, the secret world of green feet, which help Jacko’s (as we famously call them) them wade as well climb has been unveiled. They remain up reeds. Their plumage is Way more than just black and brown. Jack motionless which allows close study a mix of brown and black Snipe have nearly every colour on the spectrum to of what is a very beautiful bird, with white and males have camouflage themselves. covered in golden stripes which are incredible blue ‘lores’ near broken up with dark browns and the bill. Not only very crepuscular in behaviour, Longeared Owls plumage allows them to melt into their scrub roost during the day.

BIRDS

One thing all these birds share is their cryptic camouflage which makes them both beautiful and a challenge to spot and this makes them special. The challenge of seeing them, the fact that their hidden, secretive lives means that a sighting isn’t an everyday occurrence, and their subtle splendour makes them bright and beautiful in my book. They occur around the Deepings at most of our gravel pits, in the muddy, reedy fringes and do love a good wet field as well. April is a great month to see (or rather not to see!) these birds, as they move north. Everyone is aware of their camouflaged plumage of Owls, especially tree and field dwelling Owls. Shorteared and Long-eared Owls, of the Asio family both

share similar plumages but Short-eareds have yellow eyes, whilst Long-eareds have orange eyes. Oh yes, and the tufts on their head are different lengths. Their roosting habitat preferences are different as well, with Long-eareds loving a tree whilst a Short-eared will make do with long grass. I don’t think anyone can deny the beauty of these birds!

Will works at Grasmere Farm in Deeping St James (with a butcher’s and deli in Market Gate, Market Deeping) but in his spare time enjoys wildlife watching locally and across the country. He is also a keen photographer. Many of his images can be found at http://justwildimages.blogspot.co.uk/ and photo cards can be found for sale at Market Gate Deli in Market Deeping.
