Let’s hear it for The Deepings School who once again scooped a number of Awards in the Spalding Guardian and Lincs Free Press Education Awards. The School’s ‘Butt Masters’ were deserving winners of the Environment Award for their Butt Sticks designed to help reduce the amount of water people waste. Winner of the Support Staff Award was Donna Dimeloe for the valuable admin support she gives to the school’s School-Centred Initial Teacher Training programme. Judges felt that her work with new trainee teachers at the school, without any teacher training herself, was exceptional. Foreign languages teacher, Tors Millikin was highly commended for the commitment and inspiration that she has shown to her students in spite of a significant health issue herself. Student Emily O’Neill was a worthy runner up in the Student of the Year competition, juggling her academic studies with a keen interest in dance, training at the Deeping School of Dance. She also finds time to be a member of the Deepings Explorer Scouts Unit and is currently fundraising for a countrywide project next summer. Young people in the Deepings doing their best to make life easier for others!

Famous ‘A4’ pacific locomotive No.60009 Union of South Africa worked a special train through Deeping on Tuesday, 10 July, from Lincoln to London King’s Cross in conjunction with the RAF 100 celebrations. With a diesel locomotive – No.66009 – keeping it company, the train is seen approaching Stowgate crossing. The special was timed to run at 60mph – a far cry from the 126mph world steam locomotive speed record set by its sister locomotive Mallard between Little Bytham and Essendine on the East Coast Main Line 80 years ago on 3 July 1938. When Chris and Gabbs decided to embark on a world cycling tour they choose the Deepings as one of their overnight destinations! They plan to cycle 100,000km across the 7 continents, covering 67 countries whilst raising awareness and funding for their charity “Prevent Breast Cancer”, the UK’s only charity that focuses solely on predicting and preventing breast cancer. They estimate the tour will take them a minimum of 5 years. www.chrisandgabsworldcyclingtour.com/

Through adversity to the stars via Frognall Known as Market Deeping Airfield, this class 2 landing ground was officially listed as a 75 acre field, one and a half miles from St James Deeping Railway station, and one of 38 in Lincolnshire at the time of the First World War. It occupied a piece of land known as ‘The 90 Acres’ east of the Stamford to Spalding road (A16) between Deeping Common and Frognall. Consisting of a wooden hut with a supply of petrol landing flares and spares, this was the responsibility of the Royal Defence Corps who were billeted at the Granary at Willow Lodge Farm, Spalding Road, Frognall. The Royal Flying Corps Motto ‘Through adversity to the stars’ remains the motto of the Royal Airforce. Early planes were unreliable as revealed in a letter to his parents in Boston from Jack Baker, RFC; ‘We were flying over France when the engine stopped altogether. And a good job we were 3000 feet up in the air or I should have been killed outright. When the engine stopped the officer said to me, ‘Baker our time has come. Be brave and die like a man’. And he shook hands with me. I shall always remember as long as I live the ten minutes that followed. The next thing I remembered, I was in a barn in a field.’ The need for planes in 1915 was urgent and all Lincolnshire major engineering firms, except those manufacturing tanks, were employed for the construction of aircraft. Ruston & Proctor received an initial order for 100 BE2c’s in January 1915, later responsible for the manufacture of 300 airframes for the Sopwith ½ Strutter, a light weight fighting scout. With a contract to build the Sopwith Gunbus in 1915, the bulk of Robey & Co’s output was between 1915-18 to build the short 184 Sea Plane. With a workforce of approx 5,000, Clayton & Shuttleworth were the largest manufacturer with a factory including the Titanic Works, covering about 100 acres. All of these firms recruited in the Deepings for men with engineering skills and it is believed that quite a few went to Lincoln to build tanks and aeroplanes. The military requisitioned 2,500 acres of land at Cranwell to train the newly recruited pilots, needed to fly these planes. Later recruited from the army, initially volunteers were sought, one of which was Donald Rooksby, husband of Agnes nee Mulligan of the Waterton Arms, Deeping St James. continued >

FEATURE Frognall catered for all types of aircraft and pilots of different nationalities. Posters were put up locally so that residents could distinguish between German aircraft and our own. For residents, the airfield created quite a spectacle and for pilots it was a favourite stop as residents would supply refreshments for the brave airmen.
In September 1916, the headquarters of No. 38 Squadron was formed at Melton Mowbray and by 1st October, ‘C’ flight was resident at the newly constructed Fight Station near Buckminster and at Leadenham. The busy airfield at Frognall was the main refuelling base for these Home Defence Squadrons, whose task was to patrol the East Coast using B.E.2s and F.E.bs to stop the Zeppelins reaching the industrial sites of the Midlands. The first Commanding Officer of 38 Squadron was a Captain A.T Harris who was better known in World War Two as Air Marshall of the RAF, Bomber Harris.
In 1917 tragedy struck; the Peterborough Advertiser reported; ‘A fatal accident occurred in South Lincolnshire to one of our airmen on Friday morning. He had been flying over the fen district for some time and when in Crowland some minutes before the accident he was observed flying around the town, sometimes so low to nearly catch the buildings. He eventually got down in Snowdens field and then rose again but only to a little height, when the machine went sideways, dived down in the Church Field, running by the side of the Churchyard. The machine was smashed and the airman (Lieutenant Robertson a Canadian in the RFC) still breathed but was unconscious and badly injured. He died in a few minutes.’ By December 1916 there were 11 Home Defence Squadrons and by the end of the war 14 RAF Squadrons were established, the RFC becoming the Royal Air Force on 1st April 1918. The Frognall airstrip was closed in 1919 and returned to farm land.

Amy & Luke Hunnings Fancy Footwork Their paths crossed at the Deepings School, they fell in love and went off to study but. unlike many couples whose story ends there, this golden team stayed together during those years and now with their home and hearts in the Deepings their talent, enthusiasm and warmth is touching hundreds who come into their orbit! Amy is the one not born and bred in Deeping; her family moved here from Werrington to make it easier for her to pursue her dance classes when she attended Deeping School of Dance with Principal Miss Hills on Saturday mornings. This is where her enduring love affair with dance was born, which grew over the years until at 16 she went off to dance college in Leeds, later travelling to Hong Kong where she had a brief affair with performing but realised that she was a home bird at heart and returned to establish her very own dance school, Inspire Dance. Starting out at the Deepings Community Centre in 2011, the school grew in baby steps. But as we all know enthusiasm is contagious and now the school has in excess of 170 students! Inspire Dance also employs two other teachers, Imogen Barnes and Charley May, both of whom are from the local area too, as it continues to grow. Making sure that she is fully qualified in all disciplines and with Charley and Imogen attaining their second level teaching qualification, Amy wants to ensure that her students have the opportunity to compete, to excel in exams and are given plenty of opportunities to perform. Which was why she was thrilled when Inspire Dance was one of eleven dance companies 22
asked to perform at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London’s West End. They danced to a packed house: three performances in acro, based on cirque du soleil style, a Street Dance piece and a contemporary piece ‘Stranger Things’ based on the hit Netflix programme. All pupils were invited to audition and 28 were selected to perform, aged between 7 and 16, accompanied on their adventure to London by the School’s four teachers, Amy, Imogen, Charley and maternity cover teacher Mikayla Bessent. ‘It was a fantastic showcase,’ enthused Amy ‘and the girls did not disappoint, danced incredibly and behaved like young professionals.’ As well as ballet, tap, acro and modern, the school also teaches street and musical theatre, soon to be joined by AQA Dance GCSE course for pupils going into years 9, 10 and 11. They have been very proud to see some of their dancers audition for professional parts, such as Emily Comber in the musical School of Rock. Pupils such as Isabel Martin and Ella Dunnett have also performed at the Cresset in Oliver. But the school emulates Amy ‘s own approach to life and living and works as a family-orientated team. As well as being competitive and aiming to become highly accomplished there is time for lots of fun and laughter too. Great excitement greets the annual show in November which takes place on a professional stage at the Corn Exchange in Stamford. There is no extra payment and all students have a costume and a dance in which to perform. Seats are crammed full of expectant family and friends eager to see the prowess of their offspring and to kick off the Christmas celebrations!
The summer holidays are the only time when the school is properly closed but Amy and Oscar (2) and baby Isla are not likely to be treated to a long holiday overseas as this is when the football season starts and husband Luke’s passion springs into action! Football has always been Luke’s go-to recreation and on his return from Sheffield Hallam, where he studied Criminology, he resumed his commitment to the local game, playing for Peterborough Northern Star, Blackstone’s and for the last three seasons he has played for the first team at Deeping Rangers. No stranger to awards, Luke won the Lincs senior shield with Blackstone’s and the Hinchingbrooke Cup with Peterborough Northern Star in 2015. This year at Ranger’s annual awards he achieved a clean sweep of trophies: Supporters’ Player, Players’ Player and Managers’ Player. Everybody’s favourite, Luke is a great support to Amy, the rock which has enabled her to strike out on her own and create the extremely successful business which Inspire Dance has undoubtedly become. Having initially been keen to enter the police force, Luke has worked with offenders overseeing their reentry into the job market. Now a project manager at Thomas Cook, he tries not to miss the Tuesday night and Saturday afternoon matches and when daughter Isla was due, Amy was under strict instructions to avoid a Tuesday evening delivery! Here’s to the continued success to the Deepings’ golden couple!

Many types of Agapanthus, Crocosmia, Kniphofias, Dieties bicolor and a personal favourite Gladiolus papillo which is not what you would consider from first glance a Gladioli. modest downward bell shaped flowers of cream, peach and slate purple. Has been reliably hardy for us and bulks nicely. All of the above plants very tolerant of the heat and dry conditions we are experiencing. Next month sees the Plant Fair here at the nursery on September 16th. The Fenland Group of The Hardy Plant Society will be meeting the day before with Kevin Hughes doing the talk on progress at Cally Gardens which he took over earlier this year should prove to be very interesting. The meeting will be 2pm for 2:30 start. Kevin will also be stopping over for the Plant Fair on the Sunday some very unusual plants will be for sale.

BASTON CAR SHOW
There were some familiar vehicles among those on display, though some owners had travelled from further afield to take part in this popular event.
The success of the Baston Car & Bike Show is down to the wide appeal of the cars, commercial vehicles and motorbikes on display which range from early examples through to exhibits from the current day.
Baston basks in the sun for their big drive-in event says David Brown The Baston Car & Bike Show had their most successful event to date on July 1 with hundreds of display vehicles and visitors making the most of the glorious weather. The aim of the event, established eight years ago, was to put on an all-inclusive event appealing to anyone with an interest in cars and motorbikes – old and more recent vehicles – to show them off. In their first year around 350 vehicles were on show – in 2018 its was more than 800!
Several of the local car dealerships get involved in the Baston event to bring the latest models for the visitors to see for themselves.
Support attractions include local car dealerships showing off some of the latest models to visitors, plus trade stands, food and drink outlets, children’s rides and games, and a varied choice of live music throughout the day. To date, the Show has raised almost £60,000, most of which has been donated to local organisations and good causes.
The Best in Show award this year was presented for an immaculate 1956 3442cc Jaguar XK140. Former BRM racing car mechanic Peter Bracewell (left) is seen receiving the Trophy from Antony Squires. 25

ANTIQUES
No man’s personal retreat – be it in the house or an outbuilding – is complete with objects reflecting its owner’s interests. On a recent stroll round the Market Deeping Antiques & Craft Centre we found plenty of items – antique and retrostyle – to add a touch of personal style to your Man Cave. There’s everything from collectable postage stamps, die-cast and tin-plate model vehicles, to much larger items – and you don’t have to spend a fortune to find some nostalgic gems.
There’s something very tactile about old tools – a reminder of days of hard but satisfying work in the pre-power tools era – and they make great conversation pieces or you could even put them to their original use! For example, there was a splendid old wooden plane for £5, a Victorian paraffin torch priced at £13.50, or an attractive vintage wood block pulley marked up at £15. At the time of our visit, Unit 18 had a special offer where, if you bought three tools, you got the cheapest item at half price.
World Cup fever may be over for another four years, but for some good old-fashioned football-related reading how about a nostalgic 1950s-book such as Billy Wright’s Football Album for just £2.
If you are lucky enough to have your own bar, then you can add a touch of colourful character with these miniature Wade pottery drink barrels priced at from £4 apiece. Cheers!
You often read about a revival in the fortunes of vinyl records, but for many this interest has never gone away. There’s a big choice to be found here suiting most musical tastes and price brackets.
If you collect vinyl, a good idea for their storage are these wooden crates featuring a variety of famous record labels. Boxes are available for storing 7-inch singles (£22.50) and 12-inch LPs (£29.50).
For some nostalgic reading, these vintage motorcycle magazines from the 1960s are full of fascinating reading with advertisements featuring prices to make your mouth water! There were also individual copies of the Railway Wonders of the World magazine from the 1930s at £2 per issue.
If your budget doesn’t stretch to an original horse painting by an old master, then you can create the right effect with a large framed print at £24.
How about a stylish pair of stools for the bar in your man cave? Price £100 for the pair.
For a touch of stylish lighting, we liked this studio-style tripod lamp priced at £140. continued >
27
ANTIQUES Automobilia is another area where there’s a large choice and price range for original and reproduction items. We liked the period Valor paraffin can at £15.
For fans of American comics and Super hero action stories, there’s a huge choice at £5 each. Kapow!
If the household authorities won’t allow bulky bits of railwayana in the house then original framed carriage prints may be the answer? These were displayed in railway carriages of yesterday and there’s a variety of topics available from around £40. This one features Stowmarket Station from an original painting by Leonard Squirrel and carries a £70 price label. Keep your eye out for local examples, which include the old stone bridge at Deeping St James, Crowland, Stamford Town Bridge, plus a quartet of Peterborough studies.

We’re not sure if the Tardis effect means you can get more money in a Police money box (£9.50), but it should appeal to Dr Who fans. Likewise a Police box mug at £6.95. There was even a Tardis umbrella priced £15.99! Military related items are always popular and a Jerry Can at £15 can be either a decorative item or look the part in your Land Rover or Jeep!

DEEPING UNITED
Deeping United It is a truth worth stating that Deeping is growing! And just as it is important to ensure that the services that are on offer expand so is it also necessary that the sporting opportunities of which we have always been proud are accessible to our children. It was with this in mind and seeing that local youth sides were at capacity that motivated Lee Sutton to reignite Deeping United which had actually existed in the Deepings since 1913. Lee is Deeping born and bred, coaching his eldest son Oliver from the age of 5, first at Northborough and then at Glinton, finishing his football career playing for Deeping Rangers u18s. Now with two younger boys, Alfie and Finlay, Lee was aware that with local youth teams at capacity there were many youngsters not able to play. Getting together with Andrew Isabell
the two set about establishing a committee. ExRangers player Matt Holland was keen to give something back to the local game and James came on board to ensure that the FA Charter Standard was attained, with Emma Pearce as secretary, Emma Graham as treasurer and Jolene looking after welfare arrangements. Having started in mid April, the Club now has over 70 members playing from age 5 to age 12, with an over 50s & 60s walking football overseen by Graham Mason and still growing! The Club has been well supported by Deepings Rugby Club who allow their changing rooms and facilities to be used, the Leisure Centre host the teams on their land and local businesses as well
as DSJ Parish Council have been forthcoming with sponsorship. Sponsors include: Deeping Direct Deliveries, Insideout Home Store, Bob Broughton, AJ Glass and Glazing, DNA Scaffolding, KNH MOT & Service Centre, Wheels Motor Cycles, ACM Gas Heating and Plumbing and Qualpaint. With all his ducks now neatly in a row all that remains is for Lee as Chairman of the Club with Bob Broughton as President and their army of coaches to work with the other youngsters to give them the opportunity to work together in the outdoors as a team and reap all the benefits that that can bring! Further details email deepingunitedfc@gmail.com or call Lee Sutton 07971004273 31
NHS
70 years of the National Health Service Image: David Pearson
The Deepings Practice celebrated 70 years of the National Health Service on the 5th July by holding an open event for its patients. The Patient Participation Group were present, raising money for research with a highly successful cake sale. The Practice has expanded significantly over recent years and this celebration provided an opportunity to unveil the onsite theatre which now enables patients to have procedures such as vasectomies, hernias and carpel tunnel operations without having to go to hospital.
An open evening was held for staff and invited guests including doctors who had retired from service. Chairman of Deeping St James Parish Council, Andrew Bowell was present and said. “It was a great honour to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the NHS with the doctors and staff from the Deepings Practice. On more than one occasion my life had been saved by the caring skilful staff of the NHS.” David Shelton, Mayor of Market Deeping praised the tour by Practice Manager, Jo Kevan and commented, “I was most impressed to see the recently expanded surgery, created to cover the estimated increase in the population of the Deepings.” 33

RECTORY PADDOCK
Grass Vetchling
The Rectory Paddock
Winner of The Community Award at Lincolnshire Environmental Awards 2018 ‘It was 20 years ago today’, that Market Deeping Town Council bought The Glebe Field in order to prevent house building between our main green area and the church. It included a small piece of neglected field. Here’s what happened next… After creating a small pond, it became neglected, overgrown and had inappropriate non-native planting. Waste was dumped on the field. A youth group working in The Spinney offered to clear the pond. Getting mud covered was seen as a plus! Over two hundred cans and bottles were retrieved. Clearly some renovation was needed. A wildlife pond and a meadow full of wildflowers was the aim. A volunteer team was set up, working with Pyramid Orchid Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust to lay hedges, sow and plant wild flowers and enlarge the pond. 200 trays of wildflowers were home-grown. The Council bought seeds too, particularly Yellow Rattle, essential for a healthy
meadow. We knew we were on the right track when Vipers Bugloss, a stunning blue flower, was spotted last year. This summer, we found our first Pyramid orchids. Taking five years to germinate, they’re a long time coming! Another rare flower, Grass Vetchling, has also been identified. These scarce flowers need hard work to prevent their loss from our countryside. With birds, insects and wild animals like hedgehogs becoming endangered, we successfully developed a range of environments, encouraging as much wildlife as possible. With many plans coming to fruition, the Town Clerk entered the Spinney and Paddock project into the Lincolnshire Environment Awards, Community Project section. We began a nail biting circuit of initial statements and a site visit by the judges after which we learned our entry had made the top three! continued >

RECTORY PADDOCK Nerves intensified because a presentation had to be made to the judges and all the other Environment Award hopefuls at a hotel in Lincoln. Supported by volunteer team members, I had 8 minutes to convince the panel that we deserved to win. It was then we discovered that the President of the Awards was the one and only David Bellamy! Suddenly it was getting serious… We had to return that evening for a dinner and presentation of the awards, believing that the Sleaford river project had won. You can imagine our delight when – after one of those pauses – we heard “The winner is the Spinney and Paddock project!” The award is a rather nice lump of engraved glass. The Council is also entitled to display the Award logo on its letterhead but really, the best thing is that Market Deeping and its people have this magical green space in which to breathe, slow down and wonder. Food Is your dog a carnivore or omnivore? The domestic dog is a member of the Genus Canis (canines), which forms part of the wolf-like canids. The closest living relative of the dog is the grey wolf. Research supports dogs have a natural and undeniable carnivorous bias. When choosing your dog’s food, it can feel like a minefield. What should my dog eat? What ingredients can contribute to aliments and long-term health issues? Grain what’s that all about? If we start by looking at the biology of a dog they are equipped with canines and their jaw works in a chopping motion which means the jaw can only move up and down and not side to side like an herbivore which in turn makes them perfectly designed for cutting meat. Furthermore, a shorter digestive track enables them to deal with raw meats in a way we couldn’t. Protein is a cause for debate, what matters most is the protein source rather than how much. When looking at foods a dog requires a good quality meat based protein source and not plant based such as pea protein.
High cereal based foods are a cheaper way for manufacturers to bulk out their food. This normally means the meat content and quality is comprised quite often in the form of derivatives. Many are also not a ‘fixed formula’ which means every bag can contain different ingredients.
Grain Free foods are increasing in popularity due to the higher meat contents, most are made with sweet potato which is a slow release carbohydrate keeping your pets feeling fuller for longer.
Seven Grain Free is a very cost effective food with at least 50% animal protein, Omega 3 & 6, Cereals in dog food are a filler, the price Hypoallergenic and a gentle makeup of natural initially may seem cheaper you end up feeding botanicals. A 12kg sack costs just £42.99 more (due to the cereals not being utilised by which means feeding better doesn’t have to their bodies). They can also be converted to cost the earth. FRENCH VISITORS
Menton meets Market Deeping! A group of my ‘mature’ French pupils – they are all retired professionals – and a fellow teacher, recently visited our region and stayed in Market Deeping. They were enchanted by the countryside, which we often undervalue ourselves, easily forgetting, as Simone pointed out, that “this is just such landscape as the impressionists loved to paint.” In Deeping they stayed at Caudle House, which they could not praise too much and where the fantastic breakfast menu kept them satisfied all day! “We’d like to have fish and chips” they said when they arrived, so the first evening we went to The Riverside Restaurant where both ambience and food met full satisfaction and the scenery on the riverside was declared to be beautiful.
40
The next day a tour of Market Deeping took in the market, where our fishmonger from Melton greeted them, in French! Afterwards it was Church Street with the story of the distillery and Holland House – the prevalence of lavender in so many gardens was a surprise. The oldest private house in the town was, quite by chance, the scene of their most vivid Market Deeping memory when the same group visited two years ago. This time we took a photographic pause there and renewed acquaintance with David and Nicky. There followed a visit to St. Guthlac’s – not an easy name for the French tongue to get around – which was much admired, especially the stained glass windows. (It’s always refreshing to see our usual haunts through the eyes of strangers. Thus we discover beauties in things that we have just taken for granted “because they are there and have always been there”. This was a voyage of discovery for me too, as well as for my French friends.)
We visited the park and playing field behind the church and saw the wild flowers and water lilies of the Glebe meadow. Refreshment was then taken at Lilli’s teashop where Simone, Karin, Annie, Jacqueline, Xavier, Jean-Claude and Anne were warmly welcomed. Several “myths” about England were dispelled by the visit, viz that it always rains and the food is poor! The weather was brilliant and “We’ve eaten well everywhere we’ve been” they said. Their last dinner was at The Bull and the steaks were reportedly excellent. The following three days comprised a two day stay in Stamford and visits to Woolsthorpe, Grimsthorpe and Lincoln, and the cathedral took their breath away. It takes mine away too!

Andrew Bowell, Chairman of Deeping St James Parish Council has been out & about!
Reflections of David Shelton, Mayor of Market Deeping
This glorious weather certainly brought the crowds out to the various events I have been pleased to attend during the month.
An August welcome and another chance to highlight recent and imminent events and opportunities for us in the Deepings, both Market Deeping and Deeping St James.
The Dog Show on Jubilee Park was the best ever, a pleasure to meet so many well behaved dogs and their owners, and even better the profits from this event are going towards buying and installing a trim trail on the Park! The Rose and a Sweet Pea Show, held in the Vicarage Garden is the main fundraising event for the Priory Church. Here Councillors were on hand to meet and talk to people, and to promote the work of the Council. Having had the privilege to open the Carnival last year, it was my turn to crown Emma Baker as the Carnival Queen and Esme Hughes as Carnival Princess this year. After a tour of the various attractions we were treated to a superb tea and cakes provided by Deepings Inner Wheel. It was an honour to be invited to celebrations at Deepings Practice to mark the 70th Anniversary of the NHS. Dr Phipps gave a short introduction to how the NHS came into being before we were given a tour of the facility. Marking the Centenary of the RAF, I attended an “RAF 100” event at Market Deeping Scout Hut previously the cookhouse for RAF Langtoft. Organised by the local branch of The British Legion, the highlight was a talk given by Dave Lee, about his time in the RAF as a bomb disposal officer working in clearing mines and bombs around the world. Stay safe in this heat, drink plenty of water, and enjoy the Raft Race and the Duck Derby!
On Sunday the 1st July, we had the fantastic Deepings Carnival and Parade hosted by the Deepings Lions and Deepings Rotary Club, with what I believe was a record crowd on this magnificently sunny day. Andrew Bowell, Chairman of Deepings St James Council and I shared the honours of declaring it open and crowning the carnival queen. I understand that the stallholders had an excellent day. Next to be looking forward to, is the Deepings Raft Race on Sunday the 5th August. This Deepings annual event will be used as one of the significant opportunities for the SKDC to promote Visitor Economy specifically for the Deepings. Early and ironic to point out in this heatwave, but we are planning a bigger and better Market Deeping Christmas Market on Sunday the 25th November, so put it in your diaries.

SUMMER
‘Cor, it’s ’ot, innit?! Innit ’ot?!’ Si Fox muses...
Image: Craig Putterill
the Welland, around Scout Island, looking for adventure. It was like a mini Swallows and Amazons, except I couldn’t swim, and was scared witless of the swans that came to have a nosy.
I’ve been hearing this a lot recently. Even the weather people on the News have joined in. ‘Day fourteen of the heatwave engulfing the entire country!’ they exclaim from the comfort of their air-conditioned studios, whilst a picture of parched grass taken by Dave from Bridlington is beamed onto the green screen behind them. Is it a ‘heatwave’ though? Is it enough to get Martha and the Vandellas bursting into song? I’m not so certain. Surely this is just ‘Summer’. I mean, I don’t want to view things through rose-tinted glasses, but I seem to remember every summer was like this when I was a lad back in the 80s. School would break up, and six long weeks lay before us. I’d wake up at seven every morning, the sun streaming through the window, the warm glow bathing my face as another glorious day started with Timmy Mallett and his WACaday shenanigans on the television, then it was out to play all day with friends.
Then, as teenagers, as the long hot summers continued, me and my mates used to spend every moment frontin’ and maxin’, chillin’ in the car we spent all day waxin’, before heading off to a barbecue at 4. Except we didn’t… That’s from the song ‘Summertime’ by Will Smith, who knew how to enjoy those lazy days. He wasn’t vandalising parks and scaring old folk, bored out of his mind. We didn’t either. That’s the only thing I have in common with Will Smith! Image: Paul Plumridge
So yes, it’s hot. It’s a monster to work in, especially if you’re doing manual work, or sitting in an office without air-con, but it wasn’t so many years ago it rained solidly for about 10 months, flooding everywhere. And it was only this year that a lot of us were snowed in. That’s the beauty of England, you never know what you’re going to get (a bit like a box of chocolates, ahem). Image: Paul Plumridge
Living in Deeping, I was lucky enough to have friends who lived on the river, some of whom had rowing boats. Heady summer days, rowing up and down
So let’s make the most of it. Let the kids play outside, instead of staring at screens in their bedrooms; let us greet each other with a cheery ‘Hello’ as we try and ambush the ice-cream van for a 99, but most of all, let’s stop calling it a ‘heatwave’. It’s Summer!!! 45
KILLER INTENT by Tony Kent When an attempted assassination sparks a chain reaction of explosive events across London, Britain’s elite security forces seem powerless to stop the chaos threatening to overwhelm the government. As the conspiracy unfolds, three strangers find their fates entwined: Joe Dempsey, a deadly military intelligence officer; Sarah Truman, a CNN reporter and Michael Devlin, a Belfast-born criminal barrister with a secret past. As the circle they can trust grows smaller they are forced to work in the shadows, caught in a lifeor-death race before the terrible plot can consume them all. An absolute knockout debut novel from Tony Kent, a top ranking, Irish born barrister and former champion boxer. Able to bring a wealth of detail and personal insight to this unputdownable thriller, it is one not to be missed. I loved it, roll on number 2 and the subsequent film. Jennie Deller
Review of Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty I only know about Liane Moriarty because the group I belong to (the Deepings branch of NWR – National Women’s Register) chose one of her books (The Husband’s Secret) as one of their books for their UK wide Big Read. I enjoyed the book and so decided to read another one by her – Big Little Lies, which I loved. (It’s also an awardwinning TV mini series). It is a story about three women all at a crossroads in their lives; Madeleine, Celeste and Jane. A brilliant take on ex-husband’s and second wives; mothers and their children; school yard scandal and the lies we all tell ourselves in order to survive, the book is set in Sydney, Australia and has everything – real characters, a great plot, humour, suspense and is a rattling good read. The book manages to include some difficult issues (eg domestic abuse and murder) whilst being easy to read. Moriarty’s characters are so well defined that you feel you know them. The story hooks you in from the beginning and keeps you guessing to the very end. A great summer read, entertaining, funny, thought-provoking and not too heavy. I really liked Madeleine. She reminds me of my youngest daughter. So, if you are looking for a couple of good summer time reads, I would recommend both The Husband’s Secret and Big Little Lies. Jillian Sage 46

The Cotswold Mysteries, author Rebecca Tope I discovered this series by being a volunteer on the Library counter, tried the first and was immediately glad that there was a series of about twelve. Each book is a complete story, all set in the Cotswolds’ small towns and villages. All have the same main character, Thea Osborne and some of her family and friends. They are from the Crime Section for they all revolve around the sudden death of one (and usually more), of the local population. Locations are sensitively depicted from the honey coloured stone of the local houses, churches and pubs, to the lanes, fields, wooded valleys and wild life - all beautifully brought to life in the varying seasons. It is a great way to get to know this lovely part of Gloucestershire and a good reminder if you already know this beautiful area of England. Equally perceptively portrayed are the characters, both physically and emotionally as the events of their days interweave, sometimes darkly, to reveal that there is fear, hatred and intolerance in this tranquil setting, with murder as a consequence. These are classic English village mysteries and remind me of Agatha Christie. I like their atmospheric settings, believable characters, intriguing plots, and do enjoy losing myself in their lovely but not always well ordered world. Anne Ellershaw
Summer Secrets by Jane Green Looking for a good summer read, a touch of romantic escapism? Then why not try Summer Secrets by Jane Green. It has a good storyline that kept my interest, having a few twists and turns along the way. The story is set in two time periods of the heroine, Cat’s, life. The first half is set in 1998 in London where Cat is struggling with life, partying hard. Discovering the identity of her father sends her life into a spin. Then sixteen years later in 2014, Cat wants to make amends to those she xxx has previously hurt. This quest takes her to Nantucket in New England, which the author describes as a beautiful, idyllic holiday island where the sun always seems to be shining. The perfect place to imagine yourself to be in summer! I would recommend this book as an enjoyable read, great while relaxing on the beach, round the pool or in the garden. Bring on the sunshine!

My Not so perfect life by Sophie Kinsella Jo Jo Moyes’ comment on the cover “left me giddy with laughter…” attracted me to this book. I was drawn into this “warm hearted comedy” straightaway. Written in a fast paced conversational style, it’s witty and yes, I did chuckle out loud several times. Ambitious and hardworking Katie desperately wants to succeed in the glamorous world of Marketing/ Advertising in London, even changing her name and origin to fit in. She envies her successful boss Demeter, who appears to “have it all”. Then Katie’s “not so perfect life” ends abruptly when Demeter sacks her, forcing her home to help establish her family’s new glamping holidays business. Her relationship with her father has become strained because he wants her to relinquish her dream of a life in London. Katie doesn’t tell her family that she has been sacked, pretending to be on a sabbatical. I love this description of the tension between Kate and Biddy (her stepmother): “So even though I feel as if the subject (London) is dancing around us in the ether, demanding to be discussed, neither of us say a word….and it slowly ebbs away.” To Katie’s horror Demeter and her family arrive for a holiday, shortly followed by handsome, complex colleague Alex, bringing bad news for Demeter. Is this Katie’s opportunity to exact revenge on Demeter or will they become allies? Pop in store for our Definitely worth a read!
