It might not be the Euros but there was excitement aplenty when The Deeping Rangers under12 team travelled to The Hawthorns stadium (home of West Bromwich Albion) where they competed against a number of local and not so local teams. The team lost their first game but were undaunted and persevered to win the rest of their games. The final was nail-bitingly tight but the team won a penalty shootout after the keeper made a few dramatic saves. But talent and perseverance are two qualities that are not in short supply here in the Deepings – just look at the pages of this issue! Enjoy the read and enjoy a brilliant summer too! NEWS

Insectivores have had a hard spring; April and May were incredibly cold and May was also very wet. Large trees were still bare by the 1st May, meaning no caterpillars. No caterpillars means no food to feed hungry mouths. Cold weather and rain also make life harder in every way. News from nest boxes across Britain hasn’t been great, with many perished young being found. However, against the odds a pair has raised seven young in a rusty old gate post, near Deeping, to the point of fledging! And with the great weather at the start of June, they look set to have a great start to fledgling life!

The Deepings Library celebrated Elmer Day.

As part of the application there were 3 challenges, we decided that we wanted to do all of them and so we made sure we were able to demonstrate how everything connects together and no one thing exists in isolation.’ To get involved visit www.scouts.org.uk

The Wheel thing When you mention cycles in the Deepings these days the first name that comes to mind is Terry Wright, who first had a shop in Church St, Deeping St James, moving to the site where Scholes now is and then to a store on what used to be Todds Garage site (now home to Devonports) and then more recently to the larger store opposite before moving to Werrington. But if you had said cycles in the Deepings in the late nineteenth century then Brightman would have been the name on your lips! Robert Brightman was born in 1865 in Bourne and became an apprentice to Elijah Greenfield, wheelwright and implement maker in Halfleet, Market Deeping. In 1892, he married Ann Tales, who was a member of the ill-fated local family who had been publicans at The Wheel Public House, Stamford Road for a decade in the mid 1870s. Robert took over as inn keeper at the Wheel at the same time as carrying on his business as a wheel maker. When the Licensing Board closed the pub in 1907 Robert was successful in a claim for compensation and received £145. which he used to further finance his cycle business.

He purchased the old Wheel Pub from the Philips Brewery and lived there with his wife and children and his mother Jane. His shop was remembered as a rendezvous for many a friendly chat. In his spare time he was a bell ringer at St Guthlac’s and taught many to ring as well, including Horace Day who became Captain of the belfry. His oldest son John (b. 1895) worked for Richard Stroud at the Distillery after he left school and emigrated with Richard when he went to work for A.M. Todd Distillery at Mentha USA, in 1909. John’s brothers Alfred (b. 1900) and Arthur (b. 1903) emigrated to the USA shortly after him. Their sister Annie (b.1910) married Robert Dack, son of William Dack of Barholm, in a ceremony that was described as ‘exceptionally pretty’ at St Guthlac’s Church in 1936. ‘The sun shone gloriously on the bride who was charmingly attired in an ivory satin gown with an embroidered veil and wreath of orange blossom with shoes and hose to tone. She wore a string of pearls, a gift of the bridegroom, and carried a bouquet of pink and lemon roses with trailing fern. ‘The bridesmaids were Kathleen Hornsby and Claire Wright, friends of the bride who looked charming in their flowered lemon georgette dresses with brown hats and shoes to tone. They carried bouquets of double pink tulips and wore pale lemon and green crystal necklaces, the gifts of the bridegroom. Mr Robert Baldwin, a friend of the groom, was best man. The bride was given away by her brother Charles. ‘A reception was held at the bride’s home where some thirty guests were entertained and Mr & Mrs Dack afterwards left by rail for their honeymoon in Yorkshire. The bride’s travelling attire consisting of a fawn costume with hat and shoes to match and a fur tie, gift of the bridegroom. The couple made their home in Barholm.’

Riverside Garage 1940

Robert Brightman died in 1938, leaving £416 in his will. His son William (b.1906) had been blinded as a child and so the business was inherited by Charles (b. 1913) and the property later became the Riverside Garage. Although the first mention of The Wheel Public House is in 1826 there is every chance that it was where John Creet had made his home when he moved to Market Deeping from Pinchbeck, signing a legal settlement to allow him to move parishes in 1722. The family were blacksmiths and wheelwrights by trade and in 1826 John Creet (b. 1791), son of Thomas and Grace Creet, was licensee of the pub where he lived with his wife Lucy (née Blake) and son John (b. 1819). They also owned the Bluebell Inn in Church St, Market Deeping. John junior took over the pub on his father’s death in 1834. He married Ann Carter at Pickworth in 1839 and the couple went on to have seven children, two dying as infants. They employed Maria Stephenson as a house servant and had a lodger, William Addy. Disaster struck in 1849 when they lost wheat, straw and haystacks along with a range of hovels and a large quantity of Brightmans no date

wood amounting to £200 in a fire. In 1855 more wood was lost, this time to theft, when two days after the Wood Fair three posts were taken by George Hickling. The defendant had been caught in the act of loading the posts onto a boat by Mr Shearcroft from Long Sutton who had been staying at Mr Swan’s, whose house overlooked Creet’s yard and the river. John Creet alerted the Constable, Mr Connington, and they had pursued Hickling to Deeping St James where they found him asleep in the boat. They took him to the Railway Tavern where he violently resisted the Constable, attempting to hit him with a poker. The landlord disarmed him but the help of three others was needed before he could be handcuffed. He was sentenced to two months’ hard labour. After his wife Ann’s death in 1856, John married Elizabeth Carter in Catton, Norfolk. They had eight daughters and one son, William, who died at the age of two. Meanwhile his oldest son by Ann, John, had become a teenager. He had been involved in an unfortunate incident when, one Sunday morning, instead of attending church. went into his father’s fields with Thomas Cole and William Count, an apprentice to a watchmaker in Deeping, tenting birds. William held a gun, loaded with powder and paper for wadding and while reaching a stick from a hedge with the gun towards him, it discharged and inflicted a wound on his left side. Initially he didn’t suffer much but it caused internal injuries and he died after great suffering.

FEATURE stables, a workshop and a garden. Son John (b. 1840) had married Elizabeth Lake in Market Deeping in 1868 and left the town to work as a plate layer on the railway in Yorkshire. In 1871 John, now 52 years old, and likely suffering from ill health, sold three lots of his property at the White Horse Inn with Mr Metcalf the Auctioneer. As well as The Wheel with the stables and out buildings there were two lots of land on Millfield. The Wheel was purchased by Joseph Philips Brewery of Stamford. While the sale was going through John died, leaving effects of £200. His wife Elizabeth continued to run the pub. In 1876 she re-married, Samuel Searle, boot and shoe maker who lived and worked in the Market Place, Market Deeping. Matthew Tales from Bourne Fen then Robert and Annie Brightman daughter took over as the landlord, he had married 1932 John and Ann’s daughter Mary (b. 1844) in 1866 she was working as a cook to the Marston family, brewers of the Market Place, Market Deeping. The couple went on to have six children. In 1876 Matthew was found guilty of giving incorrect measures and fined two shillings and sixpence and costs. In 1887 he was up before the bench in Bourne again, this time for assault on his wife. No corroborative evidence was found and the case was dismissed, but he and Mary had to leave The Wheel. The family moved first to Halfleet with Matthew working as an agricultural labourer, and then they probably moved to Yorkshire. In 1910 Matthew took three of his children with him to New Hamburg, Canada, returning in 1914 to collect his wife and remaining children. He set sail on the RMS Empress of Ireland which suffered a collision in thick fog with the Norwegian Collier SS Storstad, sinking in the mouth of the St Lawrence Annie Brightman in garden

River. Although the ship was equipped with watertight compartments and in the aftermath of the Titanic disaster, more than enough lifeboats, she floundered in only 14 minutes. Of the 1,477 people on board, 1,012 died, Matthew Tales being one of them. This was the worst peacetime marine disaster in Canadian history. Jacob and Maria Congreve then took over at The Wheel, Jacob also carrying on the trade of wheelwright, but the family moved on to Husbands Bosworth, Market Harborough, and then the Brightmans took over. And the rest, as they say, is history!

of Albert Moyse, the river bailiff who memorably and skilfully ‘played the bones’, the rib bones of a pig! A move to Maxey High Street followed but after just six months Gordon died prematurely at 63 in 1987. The Gaches family’s world was turned upside down; the business was closed down but reopened shortly after with Philip at the helm. Philip had early on decided to join the family business and had started an apprenticeship in 1979 with John Ford at Norwich City College, which he completed in 1982. Little did he realise that he would be jettisoned into running the business at this stage in his career at the grand old age of 23. Initially Philip and Andy Hill, an apprentice from Stamford, continued in the same vein as Gordon had done, largely with local plastering projects. Increasingly, though, Philip’s passion for working in historic buildings grew and after ten years the firm was exclusively focusing on this aspect of the business. Awards and accolades followed and now Philip is a Master Plasterer recognised by the New Guild of the Traditional Plastering Craft. It is true to say that Philip has worked on some of the most prestigious plastering projects of the day; the magnificent exterior

of Strawberry Hill House, Windsor Castle following the fire of 1992, the Landmark Trust restoration of the 1790 James Wyatt gothic fantasy working dairy at Cobham Hall in Kent, using authentic materials and techniques and he is now reconstructing three 18th-century ceilings at Apethorpe Palace for Baron and Baroness Von Pfetten who purchased the building from English Heritage after many years of decay in private hands. When Claxby Hall in the Lincolnshire Wolds caught fire in 2011 the roof and ceilings were destroyed by a combination of fire and the water used to extinguish it. The staircase ceiling had been particularly elaborate with a central, oval moulding with an outer broken oval moulding which became four corner panels. Inside the central oval was a heraldic cartouche of the Dashwood family crest and inside each corner panel was a griffon, also an emblem of the Dashwoods. With no measurements available the reconstruction at the hands of Philip took place with the aid of a photograph of part of the ceiling from an old issue of Country Life and one small fragment of the salvaged moulding. Philip has taken his craftsmanship overseas, working with the Turquoise Mountain Trust established by the Prince of Wales in Myanmar and Afghanistan to train local people in traditional crafts. In Myanmar he has taught 30-40 young architects to restore the colonial buildings to their former glory. Eager to pass on his skills, not only has Philip introduced his sons William and Jude to the trade but he also runs training courses on an international basis and is happy to deliver talks on his passion! In fact, just what you would expect from a chap who can trace his lineage back to the 15th century and has the weight of history coursing through his veins. 23

A wedding to remember

WEDDINGS

One of the first weddings after lockdown in the Deepings was the marriage of Charlotte Ramsay and Joe Buck. After changing dates and plans more times than they would have ever wanted to, finally Saturday 22 May dawned brighter than the previous week. The glorious marquee had weathered the storm; bedecked with gitterballs, macrame and wonderful soft pastel coloured flowers, it shone like a jewel at the Granary. Dottie events and hire run by Amanda and Russell from Upwell had worked to decorate and furnish the marquee and Granary stables to create a comfortable theme for guests. One thousand origami cranes were fluttering in the breeze in the stables’ ceiling, all handmade by the bride, sister and friends – a true lockdown feat. In ancient Japanese legend the folder is promised a wish from the gods. Charlotte certainly deserved every wish she made and as lockdown rules eased we are sure her first one was granted. Everyone had rallied to help and support as this wonderful local West Deeping bride saw the big day dawn. St Andrew’s Church was decorated almost from spire to nave with beautiful floral art from Mel at Wild Garden in Peakirk. Molecey Mill was full of excited family and bridesmaids; verdant rich green velvet was the theme for their dresses, picked up in the bride’s bouquet sash. The ‘men in black’ groomsmen travelled to church in a sleek black Land Rover Defender. Leaving church after the service the village of West Deeping waited to greet the happy couple. All were dressed in their wedding finery and with a glass of fizz to toast the new Mr and Mrs Buck it meant as many people as possible could wish them good luck. It was a wonderful sight and reminiscent of old weddings when the village met in the lane outside the church to wish wedding couples well. At the Granary that evening 30 of the couple’s closest family and friends celebrated with them. After eating and speeches they enjoyed quality time together, catching up on what had been a wonderful day!

VINE HOUSE FARM

Putting therapy back into retail! Out of tiny acorns mighty oaks do grow! Remembering back to the days when the Farm Shop at Vine House Farm was more a museum than a shop – right at the beginning when feeding the birds meant throwing a few crumbs out in the garden after tea and definitely not the sophisticated array of mixes now available to cater for birds of all kinds! Gradually the product lines grew – it was a great day when it was possible to buy the quirky cards illustrating countryside events from Alex Clarke, and when Nicholas Watts produced a calendar using photographs he had taken on the farm. Sacks of potatoes could then be bought and asparagus in season. There were bunches of daffodils, Sweet Williams and sunflowers in buckets by the till. Then the Farm Walks were introduced and it was possible to explore the landscapes and the birds that were encouraged onto the farm at close quarters. During the lockdown last year the shop became a go-to for the flour and other essentials that were in short supply in the supermarkets, and there was a dawning realisation that shopping locally from sustainable sources and reducing food miles could at the same time make shopping a pleasurable experience. What better than to shop in a rural setting, and buy goods that were fresh, safe in the knowledge that you knew where they came from! Now a spacious retail environment in the open countryside, with a café looking out onto a wildlife area, is both a step back in time and a step forward. Here’s to a more sustainable and pleasurable retail future! Judy Stevens

The Breath Connection

HEALTH

with Ray Pawlett I like a good film! Star Wars is one of my favourites so you can probably guess my age from that! Have you noticed that when you are watching your favourite good guy battling it out with the arch villain, that your body changes? Your heart rate is elevated and your breathing has become shorter and shallower. This is because the film has activated the ‘fight or flight’ part of your nervous system. The example chosen here is a pleasurable one but many things can activate your fight or flight response and they are not all fun! I could be mortal danger, stress, caffeine or anything that makes your body think that there is a risk. Our nervous systems have two main states – fight or flight, and relaxation. They have evolved over a long time – many thousands of years. Unfortunately, modern life tends to pressurise people into the fight or flight part and so many people never really relax properly which is bad for their health. Breath is the major link between your body and mind. Long slow breathing will make you more relaxed but short sharp breathing gets you ready to fight or run. There are many people who have breathing problems and find it hard to take long slow breaths. This will also activate the fight or flight response and give that person a higher base line of stress in their lives, which is detrimental to health. I have been very fortunate to have been the Tai Chi coach for a group of people in Spalding called ‘Happy Breathers’. We give these people with COPD weekly sessions where we use a combination of Tai Chi, standard exercises, stretching and meditation to make them fitter and have the opportunity to make friends.

It really does work! However, there is no ‘quick fix’ – this group has committed to a regular programme of exercise and relaxation and can see the benefits. All of the regular attendees with COPD have improved their health by attending the groups. You may at this point think that if you do not have COPD, then there is nothing to worry about. But there are many other health issues that are connected to the fight or flight response. These can be very diverse – some examples are fatigue, inflammation, stress, aches and pains and many others. I used the example of the COPD group because it is a concrete, real thing that is going on now and it is a good example of how using Tai Chi, fitness training and meditation on a regular basis can make all sorts of unexpected improvements to your health. Perhaps people with COPD have a lot of motivation to improve. They start gently and gradually get stronger and feel better for it. If you have the motivation and persistence then seemingly unsolvable health problems can sometimes be improved – or avoided in the first place. If you would like to learn more about Happy Breathers, Tai Chi for COPD, Tai Chi, meditation or any forms of stress reduction, please contact me via email ray@ki-ways.co.uk or give me a ring on 07413 620344 37

The Welland - Tidy v Messy

RIVER

by Chris French, project manager at Welland Rivers Trust

OK, so we’re not talking about shopping trollies, plastic bottles and traffic cones which have no place in our rivers, streams and fen ditches… But is our British obsession of keeping things clean, tidy and presentable damaging our rivers and the wildlife that lives in them? In the River Welland catchment, many of the rivers and streams are managed quite intensively to facilitate field drainage and convey floodwater, rather than allowing it to sit in the floodplain. This involves frequent removal of obstructions and dredging of silts and gravel with excavators. However, trees and other large woody material that have naturally fallen into the river can provide a raft of physical and biological benefits and do not necessarily have to come at the expense of drainage and flood mitigation… Whilst alive, trees growing in the riparian zone not only enhance the visual amenity of the river but provide

cooling shade to the water which mitigates climate change associated with temperature rise. Their roots also stabilise banks and they provide food and shelter for native biodiversity. But what happens when that tree sheds a large bough or completely topples into the water? In a heavily managed landscape, this can strike fear into landowner and local resident alike, but it is a naturally occurring process that, where it poses no threat to people or property, should be allowed to happen. Large wood in the channel creates its own unique habitat and continues to shade and cool the water. Fish take cover around submerged branches and as the wood decays it provides a source of food and building materials for native invertebrates. Portions of a fallen tree reaching up and out of the water provide perches for kingfishers and bridging points for small mammals. As water flows over and around fallen trees, it changes flow patterns, scouring pools downstream where chub and wild trout can reside and facilitating the accumulation of gravel upstream that creates spawning areas and oxygenates the water.

Far from being a transient feature, the wood from certain species can be stable for decades on the riverbed. Alder trees become as hard as rock when submerged, and this was well known by past civilisations who used their wood for canoes. Even more fascinating is that most of the pilings that form the foundation of Venice were made from alder and have never been replaced! Finally, as climate change brings more intense rainfall events to our British Isles, rivers will have to take the brunt of higher flows. Where wood exists in the channel, it can help to slow the flow of water and encourage it to spill out into the floodplain and be stored upstream of vulnerable communities. The Welland Rivers Trust and its partners are already engaged in the strategic placement of woody material in our rivers as a ‘Natural Flood Management’ tool and it is proving to be a simple and cost-effective solution that can provide resilience to communities that would otherwise not meet the investments threshold required for traditional engineered continued >

39

RIVER

defences. This approach can be designed to allow the low flows underneath and cause minimum disruption for the landowner under normal conditions, only filling and creating storage when it is really needed. So the next time you take a walk along the Welland and think it looks a bit untidy, think about the natural processes that may be taking place and the wildlife that it is supporting. Our rivers and communities would certainly benefit from things being left a bit wilder. If you would like to know more about the Welland Rivers Trust and get involved with our work, please visit our website or send us an email! www.wellandriverstrust.org.uk info@wellandriverstrust.org.uk

BIRDS

The Story of Martha - the Last Passenger Pigeon Words and Pictures by William Bowell

On the 1st September 1914, the North American Passenger Pigeon became extinct. A haunting and sobering sentence which feels final and forever. Of course, dear reader, that’s because it is final and forever. But how did such a tragedy come about? In the 19th century the Passenger Pigeon was the most numerous bird species in North America, if not the world, with 3 to 5 billion birds. To put that in perspective,,that would have been somewhere between 25-40% of the entire continent’s bird population. People often describe modern day migrations of birds and insects as being spectacular to witness but the migration of the Passenger Pigeon would make any modern day migrations look tiny and insignificant. I can’t imagine seeing a flock a mile wide and 300 miles long, darkening the sky from dawn till dusk as hundreds of millions of pigeons fly onwards. In the modern day, the idea of any species being so abundant seems incredible. Just as incredible as it would have been 50 years to prior to 1914 to witness such flocks and think that they would become globally extinct. The name of that last Passenger Pigeon was Martha, named after the first lady married to George

Washington, and raised in captivity. Unfortunately, as the realisation that the species was in real trouble, so came about the realisation that the species wasn’t easy to breed in captivity. Extinction came about due to habitat destruction and unsustainable hunting. The parallels to our very own Turtle Doves on this side of the Atlantic, is truly disturbing, dear reader. Just like the Passenger Pigeon, our Turtle Dove is a migratory Dove (our only one in fact). And just like the Passenger Pigeon our Turtle Dove is threatened by habitat loss and over hunting. Just like the Passenger Pigeon in America, the Turtle Dove has become Britain’s fastest declining species. Down by 97% in 40 years is a scary statistic. Their numbers are halving every six years. Extinction threatens this beautiful Dove and history could repeat itself.

42

Our wonderful Turtle Doves have a great, unique purring song and are by far the most colourful Dove or Pigeon that grace our shores. It’s also our only truly migratory Dove and one that belongs in the hedgerows of our countryside during the summer. Turtle Doves summer in Europe and winter in Africa, migrating through many countries which still hunt song birds, through shooting or glue sticks. Unfortunately Italy has authorised 500,000 licensed hunters, 15 Doves per hunter, which equates to 7.5 million Doves this coming autumn. Of course, not all Turtle Doves migrate through Italy but even so this incredible figure is most or potentially the entire European breeding population of Turtle Doves. While it’s unlikely that so many Turtle Doves will be shot in Italy, the government’s consent gives a clear message that it’s OK to shoot this bird despite its

BIRDS and Tallington. Previous to this year, if you wanted to see a Turtle Dove you would have had to visit Maxey or Bainton Gravel Pits so potential increase locally is great news! From a personal perspective, I haven’t seen a Turtle Dove at Deeping Lakes for over 15 years so having a purring male is amazing!

perilous state. We can only hope this decision is back tracked as it was in France last autumn, when they gave the go ahead legally to kill Turtle Doves and after serious criticism, rescinded their decision weeks later. Just as the national picture isn’t great, locally Turtle Doves have declined massively in our local area. However, this rather special Dove has been heard purring at Deeping Lakes this spring. At least two purring birds have been heard between Langtoft

On top of this locally, an organisation has been taking action to help our local birds. The Langdyke Countryside Trust has been feeding Turtle Doves at Maxey Pits on Etton road for the last few years as well as protecting nesting habitat. This has been incredibly successful with up to 10 birds present last autumn. So what can we do to protect our only migratory Dove? Well, for starters, look out for the Fair to Nature Bumblebee logo when food shopping as this will be supporting wildlife friendly farmers. Secondly, you can help support the Langdyke Countryside Trust which is protecting several local sites which

hold Turtle Doves in our immediate area. As well as feeding them, they are also preserving the nesting habitat. More information can be found on www. langdyke.org.uk. I also urge you write to our local MP. Although not of a member of the EU, so we can’t stop Italy, our local MP can still encourage his core voters – Farmers – to plant hedgerows that Turtle Doves can nest and feed in. I am 34 and I am lucky that I can remember these birds as being common when I was young. I now know they are rare. What I don’t want to see is this beautiful bird become extinct, so please help if you can! Will works at Grasmere Farm in Deeping St James (with a butcher’s and deli in Market Gate, Market Deeping) but in his spare time enjoys wildlife watching locally and across the country. He is also a keen photographer. Many of his images can be found at http://justwildimages.blogspot.co.uk/ and photo cards can be found for sale at Market Gate Deli in Market Deeping.

A cycle through Clare Country

My name’s Mel and I moved to Deeping eight years ago. I didn’t know the local roads but went exploring on my traditional lady’s bike. I’ve loved the open road ever since, have moved onto a race bike, made lots of new friends and explored many places. There is so much to see out there, often missed while driving busily from one place to the next. We are so lucky in Deeping to be nestled between the flat expanse of the Fens and the more rolling terrain of Rutland. It’s been fantastic to see so many more people embracing cycling and walking during Covid, long may it continue! Here is a 25-mile route for you to have a go at, complete with photos to show just how beautiful the countryside is on our doorstep.

Five Great Farm Parks A tried and tested staple in the family days out genre, ‘farm parks’ cater for so many interests, that it’s no wonder they manage to attract families back time and again. Fresh air and picnics, interactive animal encounters, a chance to run around and let off steam, lots of educational value, and not to mention the cute animal photo opportunities. The experience is never exactly the same twice. I asked some wonderful local mums to tell me all about their favourite farm park, and explain why they visit time and again. Zoë Kornfeld

Tattershall Farm Park I challenge any visitor to Tattershall Farm Park to run out of things to do. If we lived closer, we’d be there every week! Upon entry you are presented with a chalkboard offering different activities spaced out at different times during the day. You are armed with a photo of the smorgasbord of furry encounters, which have previously included goat walking, reptile holding, egg collecting, a falconry display – to name a few. During the run up to Christmas, the farm puts on a wonderfully wholesome Santa Parade and grotto visit, which we were able to enjoy during the pandemic – highlights included a snow shower, real reindeer, and a boogying Shaun the Sheep! There are so many areas that make up the farm park that we have rarely visited them all in a single day, and many of them cater for all kinds of weather: indoor hay barn, sandpit, soft play, indoor barn animals, indoor toddler play area, bouncy pillows, outdoor music making, and so many animals! The friendly, family vibe of this fabulous farm can be summed up by a sign in the toilets that urges anyone in need of any supplies such as nappies, sun cream etc to please ask a member of staff for a spare. It’s the simplest of things that make all the difference, and the attention to detail and the enthusiasm behind creating a farm that families will love, and return to again and again, have not been missed. Sacrewell Farm

West Lodge Farm Park

We are very lucky and are annual members of Sacrewell, courtesy of the best Christmas present, and as a family we love this farm. It offers all-round fun, from the Playbarn soft play (currently closed due to Covid), to the animals, the history of the working mill and the new fantastic play area. Almost hidden away is a wonderfully well-thought-out nature play area, with stepping stones, streams, and a woodland area to explore risky play.

All you would expect from a farm visit and much more! Included in your entry to West Lodge Farm Park: paddocks and farm animals, outdoor adventure play park, a barrel ride, petting zoo, sheep racing, woodland walks, ride-on tractors and a session at the indoor Old Grain adventure barn (a fantastic wooden play space) You can also pay extra and include a pony ride in your visit! It is a great full day out. Since the introduction of Covid restrictions/ measures the farm have taken a lot of time and care to upgrade facilities such as toilets, one-way systems and thorough cleaning procedures. West Lodge Farm Park is a family run business and we would highly recommend a visit at Halloween, Christmas or a special event. Farmer Ed really takes special occasions to the next level! They also have great new activities coming including adventure golf. Highly recommended by the Hayward family.

Sacrewell also offers three separate local shops – Gin, Cheese and Chocolate! You can book chocolate making experiences too. To comply with Covid restrictions they have a one-way system, hand sanitisation stations throughout, and also limit the number of bookings per session. As well as visiting all the animals, the main attraction for the majority of the children is the new fantastic play area. With a variety of sections for differing abilities and ages, along with the sandpit area, we have spent many hours here happily in the outdoors – the only issue we have is trying to get the children round the animals and the mill, instead of first running straight to the play park! Rutland Farm Park This special place feels like the best-kept secret! This small working farm has an intimate feel, perfect for young children. Upon entry, you first see a small gift shop with pocket money souvenirs as well as a delicious tea room offering afternoon tea (booking required) and a range of hot and cold snacks. The one-way system ensures social distancing is maintained, whilst not impacting on the experience at all. The barn houses rabbits, guinea pigs, lambs and goats which are more than happy to be stroked. Once in Children’s Corner you can feed the goats, alpacas and llamas. Wander through the garden gate to find small, furry friends and decorated trees: an ideal walk for little legs. The Highland cows and puddle ducks wave you goodbye as you complete your circuit. The park hosts a mini assault course and ride-on tractors to give little explorers a range of options. We hope you love this farm as much as we do! Michelle and Sully Finnerty

Church Farm What can be better than the opportunity to climb into a pig pen and cuddle those cuties? Church Farm, Stow Bardolp, offers this experience and more, with many animals in enclosures that you can climb into to get up close and personal and the animals love the contact, but also have the choice to return to their space when they’re ready. Pre booking is necessary for them to balance the numbers to ensure that social distancing doesn’t impact on your fun-filled day. The one-way systems in place flow beautifully and there are plenty of places to wash and sanitise. There’s a small gift shop and a great tea shop offering take-out service from the hatch with plenty of undercover seating. On top of all the cuddles and stroking of pigs, goats, sheep and small furry creatures there is a fab play area that includes in-ground family trampolines, ride-on tractor courses and play equipment and a fab area for under 5s too. A massive sand pit can be found also under full cover and I’d absolutely recommend a visit to the hay barn, sooo much fun to have inside the barn. There are socially distanced rides on the tractor and the drivers are super fun and friendly, even in the rain. We finished the day watching the pig race – please have your cheering voices ready, because you can’t help but cheer those cuties on! We love this farm and I hope if you visit you have as much fun as we do.... even my teens love visiting here. Mary Sammons

what’s on Sanctuary by Art Pop-Up is a community creative adventure with artist Emily Bowers this summer as she explores Deeping Lakes. In July Emily will investigate the nature reserve, talking with local groups about their relationship with the space and learning about the millions of plants and animals it’s home to, its fascinating history and why it’s precious to so many people. In August we’d like to invite you to join us for some free, fun, creative workshops, walks and talks. There will be lots of opportunities to get involved, so please join in as we share the stories and celebrate this very special place! As the project unfolds you can find more details on artpopup.co.uk and for updates follow us on Facebook @ArtPopUpUK. A big thank you to Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust for hosting us, as well as the South Kesteven Community Fund, DSJ United Charities, the Lions, the Rotary, and the Youth Club, for making this happen.
