LETTER Editor’s

Iwill always remember my first proper boss. It was during a gap year post A-levels and before I went off to study journalism at university. I wanted to earn some money, but also gain some experience at the same time, and ended up as a production assistant at a B2B publishing house.

This was back in the day when magazines were printed via plates at the printers – yep, I am that old – and part of my job was ensuring that very thing happened on time. The job was a fraught one, and at times very stressful, but my boss was always there to have my back. And what made her stand out even more was the very fact that she was a she: in the management team of ten, she was the only female.

Of course, it's a regular occurrence now that we have female business leaders – my own wife is pretty high up at a major news publishing company – but there's no escaping that sexism does still exist across most industries. At Absolutely, however, we are only too happy to champion our local business heroes, male or female, young or old.

As March welcomes International Women's Day, and of course Mother's Day (hi mum!), we decided to devote nine pages to those women who are inspirational for all manner of reasons. And thinking back to my own experiences, they probably don't even realise how inspirational they are.

Reality TV star and Brentwood local Frankie Sims discusses moving to LA, missing home comforts and looking for love

There really is no place like home for Frankie Sims, who has returned to her beloved hometown Brentwood for one month. But the UK’s cold snap has left her shivering. “It’s absolutely freezing here; I am confined to my bedroom and trying to keep warm,” she laughs.

We chat a few weeks before she jets back to Los Angeles to film House of Sims, a new reality OnlyFans TV show that follows Frankie and her sisters Chloe, Demi, brother Charlie, and his fiancée Georgia Shults.

It’s a huge break for the reality TV star who spent four years on ITVBe’s The Only Way is Essex (TOWIE). Frankie followed in her sisters’ footsteps by joining Demi and Chloe in 2019. Fame and reality TV never

featured high on her list of ambitions, admits the events management graduate who attended Brentwood County High School.

“Growing up, I was always shy. I am an introvert. I went to university in Manchester and stayed up north for five years. I wanted to move back to Essex because I wasn’t progressing with my job. Demi and Chloe persuaded me to make an appearance on TOWIE and that was it. Now to be working on our own family show… well, it feels like it was meant to be.”

Fame has brought plenty of opportunities for the 28-year-old who has modelled for fashion brands such as Pretty Little Thing, Boohoo, and Miss Pap. But the glare of the media spotlight and social media commentary on her appearance and relationships hasn’t always been easy, reveals Frankie.

“The only relationships I’ve had are with people on TV, so I haven’t really dated anyone who isn’t in the same industry. I

find it hard,” she admits. “It’s a di erent world. The media has ruined some of my past relationships, but it’s part of the job.

“Before I was even on the show I saw my sister, brother and cousins in the spotlight experiencing social media trolling. We’re thick-skinned and handled it well.”

House of Sims, reportedly a £1million deal for the family, is a huge venture for Frankie. “After four years in TOWIE it felt like the right time to leave. You can’t stay in the same job forever.”

Frankie, alongside Chloe and Demi, left TOWIE in 2022 to film the first series of House of Sims, which took three months. It follows the family at home in Essex and adjusting to life in LA.

“We have four seasons of the show planned which will be filmed over two years,” explains Frankie. “The cameras followed us from the minute we woke up – no make-up, messy hair – to the minute we went to bed. This

unscripted style was a huge adjustment, but it’s what we signed up for – capturing every side of our life and personalities that you just don’t see in TOWIE. It’s going to be raw, super funny and emotional.”

Flying across the pond has provided its fair share of starstruck celebrity encounters, admits Frankie. “We went to our friend Vas’s (Vas J Morgan) Halloween party and met Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly. There were so many famous faces – Rebel Wilson, Tobey Maguire, Paris Hilton. It was a cool experience.”

As for dating stateside, Frankie is still on the hunt for ‘the one’. “I was excited to go to LA, I am so single! I’m 28 and thought ‘I’ll meet the love of my life’. I got out there and didn’t fancy one guy. On our show they

set me up on a date – he was 43 and we had nothing in common. It put me o and I haven’t been on a date since. I am still looking for my Jack Harlow,” she giggles. Despite the glitz and glamour of LA, returning to Essex to pack up her flat and say goodbye to family and friends has been a welcome relief for the reality star. “It’s honestly been so lovely coming back to see everyone,” she smiles. “We don’t have a circle of friends in LA because we were only out

there for a short period. It feels good to be around people you’re comfortable with.”

Home comforts are everywhere and Frankie is wasting no time in indulging in them. “I have a routine back in Essex. I go to Brentwood Kitchen a lot, it’s a popular spot for brunch. Getting a co ee and swanning about is what I love – it’s always busy and buzzy in Brentwood. I feel safe and at home there.

“In Essex everything is within walking distance and I know it like the back of my hand. There are so many things you can’t get in LA. I miss going to church on Sunday in Chelmsford with my family, and then a roast dinner in the George and Dragon in Brentwood.

“You can’t get a roast in LA. No spuds, stu ng, or Yorkshire puddings! You can’t even get the same ingredients for a roast – it’s one of those things I crave. In the few weeks we’ve been back, Demi and I have been ordering from our local Chinese restaurant, Happy Garden, and Village, an Indian takeaway. We’re making the most of it!

“In LA there are no local shops, you have no choice but to drive everywhere. I am missing living in a small town and having everything close by,” confesses Frankie.

Her heart may be firmly in Essex, but Frankie reveals she is eager and ready to return to LA to embark on new adventures. “Sometimes you need to go back to where you’re from to appreciate what you’re doing. I’m ready to explore LA.”

Looking to the future, Frankie has her heart set on her own ventures. “I enjoy reality TV and would love to do shows on my own – a Big Brother style show, cameras on you 24/7. I want the British public to know me, who I really am. I’d also like to start a business, too.”

As for returning to Essex, Frankie is uncertain. “I’m 50/50 – I don’t want to make my mind up yet. We’ll see. Who knows, I might meet someone, so I am keeping my options open.”

Q Why were you keen to take on the CEO role at Markshall Estate?

A I love challenges, and Markshall is on a long journey that presents such opportunity. I wanted to be part of something that will last and will always be there for future generations.

Q What are you looking forward to getting involved in the most?

A Right now I’m shoulders deep into projects such as a new play area, new admissions building, new catering o ers and the launch of a new School Holiday Events product. In combination, these new elements will really help to ensure we attract as many visitors as possible to enjoy the stunning setting and to learn about what we do and why.

Q What does Markshall Estate o er?

A It may surprise you to read there is such a unique landscape in the county. Our 200-acre Arboretum, an expertly curated collection of trees, surrounds gorgeous walled gardens and historical lakes. We are home to some of the rarest trees in the world right here in Essex. To make sure a visit is rounded o , you can visit the Orchard Kitchen for light refreshments or a meal.

Q Has anything surprised you since starting the job?

A There is so much passion within the team. They are dedicated individuals who believe in the charity's purpose. The team are whole-heartedly invested in what they do, as too are the volunteers. They are part of what makes Markshall so special, giving up their own time to help the charity succeed. It’s a privilege working with them all.

Q We are approaching spring, so what will Markshall Estate’s grounds o er during the season?

A Just imagine confetti cannons going o everywhere! There is so much to see. Every week there is new blossom on trees, sweet scent in the air drifting around the walled garden and bulbs bursting above the green canopy. The wildlife wakes up and you can feel nature is erupting around you.

Q What other events are on the horizon?

A We are working up two separate strands of events for 2023 and I am excited by both equally. At Markshall we are extremely passionate about learning through play with an informal style. Percy’s Adventures is a new brand that represents our School Holiday Events strand that engages with families in an entertaining way. Visitors will explore wildlife, woodlands, hands on tasks, and get creative in our 200 acres throughout the year. Outside the school holidays we will turn our attention to the adults, with a focus on walks, talks, workshops, and much more…

Q Do you live close to Markshall Estate?

A I live in a small village on the outskirts of Chelmsford, surrounded by conservation areas and woodland. Being sandwiched between Chelmsford and Maldon, I can dip in and out of being a cosmopolitan vulture or if I need to relax, enjoy rural pursuits. I think that helps me to keep focus on what Markshall has to o er, and what makes it so unique. It gives me some perspective.

Q Markshall Estate aside, what other three spots do you love visiting in Essex?

A I am partial to a Walton/Frinton beach day. We love hiring a beach hut, you can’t beat a whistling kettle while watching the kids larking about in the sand.

Not being far away, I often visit Hyde Hall. With interesting planting and plenty to see, we drop in for an hour or two to see what’s flowering. The veg growing area interests me as I spend a lot of time on veg at home, so it’s good for tips and inspiration.

I try to make sure our children have a good balance in life, so yes, I confiscate their phones and tablets for a few hours, but they do agree it’s all worthwhile when we take a slow walk along Maldon Promenade. There is always plenty of wildlife to see. I recommend taking your binoculars as there are often lots of water wading birds mooching about. The boats are interesting to look at, and if you time it right, there are rowing boat races you can watch.

Q How do you like to relax and get away from the job?

A I like to get creative and nothing makes me feel more disconnected than getting hands on with some sculpting or carving. Some of you may already know of me for my carving skills. Over the last few years by accident I somehow found I had a knack of carving pumpkins – to the point where I now have two Guinness World Records and produced work for multiple worldwide PR/Marketing campaigns and appeared on most channels. I have met some amazing people along the way and loved every minute of it. What a journey… But most of all, for me, there is nothing better than submerging myself into doing something creative, even if it turns out rubbish!

QUEEN ELIZABETH'S HUNTING LODGE

Loughton sits on the edge of northeast London o ering a leafy retreat and gateway into Essex. It is connected to the Capital’s bus and tube network, the M11 and M25 motorways and pathways, cycle routes and horse tracks through Epping Forest, which lies to the west of the town. Along its southeastern side, the River Roding flows into east London passing through Roding Valley Meadows, 1.5 miles of traditional river-valley habitat managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust and open to the public. Loughton’s village history can be traced back to the Domesday Book and its growth

into a town began in 1615 when a new road was built from London to Newmarket and Cambridge. Loughton became an important coaching stop bringing inns, smithies and shops to cater for travellers. It also brought opportunities for highwaymen, including the legendary Dick Turpin who started out as a local butcher, but found that robbery paid better and hid out at Loughton Camp, the remains of an Iron Age fort deep in Epping Forest.

Another boost to the town’s growth came in 1856 when the Victorians made it a stop on a new railway into London. This enabled the daily transport of fresh farm produce into the city. It also allowed city workers to move out and created Loughton as the

commuter town it remains today. As train travel became accessible to all, the railway brought Londoners out into the countryside for leisure, to enjoy the charms of country living and the delights of the forest. Today, as the Central Line tube trains emerge into open countryside and travel to and beyond Loughton, the views and thrill of escaping the city is just as exhilarating as the Victorians must have experienced from their steam-hauled carriages.

Loughton sits in the south of Epping Forest District and is one of six distinct towns sharing the landscape with scattered villages and hamlets found around the forest in the south, along the Lee Valley to the west and amongst farmland and greenbelt stretching to the north. A network of footpaths, many treading ancient routes, link these communities making Loughton an ideal starting point for exploring both Epping Forest and further afield. With its restaurants and pubs, explorers can fortify themselves before venturing out or reward themselves upon their return.

Loughton’s café culture also rewards those who just enjoy relaxing and watching the world go by, or who might hope to glimpse

celebrities from the popular TV series The Only Way is Essex. Loughton features in TOWIE and shops in the High Street are directly connected to cast members. For those looking for retail therapy, Loughton o ers a range of shops with their own renowned sophistication and style. This extends to adjacent Buckhurst Hill and Loughton Broadway. Both locations are just one stop on the Central Line either side of Loughton. Debden is the stop for Loughton Broadway and the Epping Forest Shopping Park, which sits a stone’s throw from the Bank of England’s print works, where all the English

bank notes are printed. Also worth seeking out close to the station is Crate Loughton, a community of local start-up retailers within an enclosed courtyard, each trading out of stylishly stacked and converted containers. Situated alongside the eastern edge of Epping Forest, Loughton is the ideal starting point for those wishing to spend time exploring this ancient woodland. On o er are rare and important habitats from forest with open glades to grassland plains, heathlands and wetlands plus numerous ponds and lakes. It is enjoyed by walkers, cyclists and horse riders with paths and tracks specially prepared for each. The forest is managed by the City of London, overseen by 12 members of the Court of Common Council and four locally elected Verderers. Entering the forest from Loughton, visitors step straight from pavement into dense canopied woodland and can follow in the footsteps of Dick Turpin to reach Loughton Camp. Then go further to

find a second Iron Age fort in the forest, Ambresbury Banks. Walking amongst these ancient earthworks, surrounded by majestic beech trees, is like travelling back in time. Or take a di erent direction towards High Beech, an open high point in the forest from which retreating Londoners watched their city burn during the Great Fire of 1666. Here visitors will also find refreshments in the form of the Kings Oak pub and two tea huts, one hut by the car park and the other just o the Epping New Road. This second hut is a popular stop for walkers, horse riders and especially motorcyclists for whom the area has historic significance being the location of the country’s first speedway track opening in 1928 with an inaugural crowd of 30,000 travelling out from London. Today the pace is far more relaxed both in the pub, behind which the track was situated, and the tea hut, which is still run by a member of the original family that served all those speedway fans.

Travelling further southwest the forest opens up at Connaught Water, a popular spot for bird watching and fishing, with trails around the lake and on to the nearby visitor centre alongside Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge. Built in 1543 for King Henry VIII and renovated by order of Queen Elizabeth I, the lodge is open to visitors and o ers one of the best views of the forest from its top floor.

Loughton, and its surroundings, makes a fascinating and rewarding destination for all tastes and ages, and one that is easily accessible by road and tube.

Head o the beaten track this year to uncover some of Essex’s lesser spotted landmarks

There are so many beautiful hidden places to explore in Essex. With 2023 being the Year of the Coast, Essex has some famous seaside resorts to explore, but also plenty of beautiful coastal towns and villages tucked away on the shorelines, waiting to be discovered. Visit Essex, the county’s tourism body, takes us through the best o -the-beatentrack spots to experience this year.

VIEWS BY THE COAST

Burnham-on-Crouch is a quiet riverside town with a quayside full of old-world charm. You can head down to the marina and watch the boats coming in, or walk along the seawall to take in stunning panoramic views of the River Crouch. There are also plenty of pretty listed buildings and traditional boat-building yards to amble by. The town hosts the internationally famous regatta, ‘Burnham Week’, every August, where you can watch boats compete against each other in nail biting, full sail action. For land lubbers, there’s a gentle 4.5-mile circular walk that starts and ends at Burnham Railway Station.

If you head round to Wallasea Island, a beautiful haven for wild birds and marine life, you can see Burnham-onCrouch from the other side of the River Crouch. Go for a stroll along the seawalls and view the saltmarsh, mudflats and

lagoons all alive with birdlife, or catch a glimpse of Common Seals in the river.

Further south is the riverside town of Wivenhoe. Known for its artists and creative writers, it’s also the perfect place to go for a great riverside pub lunch or a walk along the River Colne, with winding paths along the riverbank and through woods and fields. You can also reach Wivenhoe from the water, with a pub lunch cruise that runs from Brightlingsea Harbour.

VISIT FILMING HOTSPOTS

You may have spotted some Essex coastal locations in the Apple TV series, The Essex Serpent, starring Claire Danes and Tom Hiddleston, which aired last year. The calm backwaters of Alresford Creek provided the backdrop for the fictional parish of

HADLEIGH CASTLE DEDHAM LOOK FOR COMMON SEALS AT WALLASEA ISLAND

Aldwinter, while the swirling pattern saltmarshes at Tollesbury were featured dramatically as Danes and Hiddleston wandered through the estuarine landscape. The historic maritime town of Maldon, famous for its sea salt, was also featured in the series. You can explore the quaint high street with buildings that have unique belvedere designs, or head over to Promenade Park, where Danes and Hiddleston were spotted strolling through. Maldon’s quay is also the perfect place to view Thames sailing barges meander along the river Blackwater – you can even book an adventure on one of them with Topsail Charters.

SEE COUNTRY PARKS AND HEAD OUT INTO THE COUNTRYSIDE

The expansive landscape of Cudmore Grove Country Park on the east of Mersea Island was also a filming spot for The Essex Serpent. Get a feel for the path the stars walked down by having a picnic overlooking the sea and oyster beds, with views all the way to Brightlingsea across the water. You can take a ferry from Cudmore that takes you across the River Colne and lands you right at Brightlingsea, and it will bring you back again. For a biking adventure, head over to Hadleigh Country Park, the site

for mountain biking at the London 2012 Olympics, and be put through your o -road paces whilst enjoying views across the Thames Estuary. For an inland adventure, head out into the beautiful Essex countryside and explore Henry VIII’s old stomping grounds at Epping and Hatfield Forests. At Epping Forest, you can see Queen Elizabeth I’s Hunting Lodge, which was built for Henry VIII, or take a stroll through the ancient woodland of Hatfield Forest, where there’s a wild Fallow Deer herd.

EXPLORE PICTURE-PERFECT COUNTRYSIDE VILLAGES

For Insta-worthy views, the villages of Essex have a lot to o er. Dedham is located in the heart of Constable Country with independent shops, historic pubs and scenic walks by the River Stour. The charming village of Finchingfield is another must-see with its picturesque duck pond and local pubs to stop o and enjoy a hearty meal.

There’s also plenty to explore in the ancient Flitch town of Sa ron Walden, which hosts a superb market on Saturdays with antiques and oyster stalls next to the fruit and veg. The village of Thaxted also has its own special tradition. You won’t want to miss out on the Thaxted Morris Men, who dance throughout the year with a big celebration in June.

Q What originally inspired you to launch your business?

A My son is the inspiration for launching Talem Law back in 2017. At age 3, my son was diagnosed as autistic, and this introduced me to the world of Special Educational Needs (SEN) law. Having put in place the infrastructure to support my son in school, I realised that I wanted to help other parents too, as well as continuing my practice as an employment lawyer. So, I combined the two and with my business partner, Sean Kennedy, and we launched our firm specialising in employment and SEN law.

Q What do you think makes your business di erent?

A We have established a reputation of being experts in disability in both the classroom and the workplace. This is driven by our personal circumstances which gives us an innate understanding of the issues our clients experience.

We are also not afraid to be unique. We started our virtual business way before the pandemic, and now others are catching up!

Q What’s new for 2023?

A Last year I co-authored the “Nononsense Guide to Disability Law in Education”, which was a very proud moment, and there will be some updates planned for that publication this year. I was also nominated and selected for inclusion in the “Women Who Will” report which aims to shine a light on exceptional women in the legal industry recognising those who have shown exemplary leadership, vision and action in the legal community. This was a major honour for me and will be hard to beat, but there will be some celebrations of that achievement planned for later this year along with my peers who were also selected. I am hoping to consolidate our reputation in our niche area and to launch the “Talem Toolkit” – a compliance toolkit for employers to support their disabled sta . I may even write a book!

Q Out of work, where do you like to go?

A For a bit of retail therapy, I will usually head to Debra’s in Chigwell. Loughton has a good selection of places to eat, so I will often suggest meeting a friend for lunch or co ee somewhere along the High Street. When I am feeling creative, I enjoy ceramic painting (usually with my son) at Creative Biscuit in South Woodford.

Q What do you always make time for?

A My son. He is the reason I co-founded the business so that I could work around him. I also try to maintain my own wellbeing by a weekly visit to my jin shin jyutsu practitioner in Buckhurst Hill.

Q What originally inspired you to work for your business?

A I originally trained and qualified as a lawyer in Canada, then moved to the UK to work for Freshfields, a large international firm. When my husband and I decided to start a family I thought it would be best to work closer to home. I interviewed with several di erent law firms in the area, but found Thompson Smith and Puxon fully behind work life balance; it also had a superb client base and a very bright, a able group of partners – to me it seemed the perfect combination.

Q What do you think makes your business di erent from the competition?

A The Walton Backwaters. I love all water-based activities (swimming, windsurfing, sailing, and kayaking) and so it is the perfect place to spend time. I have to admit, it’s on my doorstep, so I don’t have to go far to visit!

A Family, friends and exercise, the latter preferably outside in the fresh air.

Q What originally inspired you to work for your business?

A I joined Edwards Duthie Shamash Solicitors four years ago, coming in as Head of the Residential Property Department, having come from being a Partner at my previous firm. My varied and interesting role at EDS was actually created for me, and really inspired me. It was the perfect opportunity to use my interpersonal skills, along with my legal knowledge as a Solicitor to develop and grow the Department.

Q What do you think makes your business di erent?

A EDS o ers a host of comprehensive legal services, and we have so many talented lawyers. We really are an individual firm, with well established roots in the local area, I feel that being part of a firm that has strong values embedded in equality and inclusivity really makes us stand out. I am also very lucky to work along some amazing women: Anna Orpwood who heads Probate, and Jo Cullen who heads Employment to name but a few inspirational ladies.

Q What’s new for 2023?

A To carry on growing my much loved property department across our

O ces, and continue to provide an outstanding conveyancing service to my clients. I am passionate about what I do, and want to be delivering my friendly upbeat Legal Service to as many people as possible, and build strong links in the community.

Q Describe a typical working day?

A Pacey and engaging, I have a lot of interaction with my clients and people in the industry, which is very important to me, and I spend a lot of time on the phone (I am very chatty!). I like to flex-adapt with the needs of my clients.

Q Out of work, where in the local area do you like to visit?

A I live in Chigwell, and really enjoy socialising. I am often out, eating in the local area with my friends, as well as with my family. Some of my favourite places to go to are The Deli in Chigwell, and Provender, and I always enjoy a glass of wine at The King William! It is always fun to have a picnic in Hainault Forest in the summer.

Q What do you always make time for away from work?

A I have twin daughters, they are our priority, and they keep my husband and I very busy. The girls and I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, usually baking and cooking from scratch. I am keen to have as many experiences as we can, I am always ready to have a getaway with them! Definitely weekends away in the UK, and holidays abroad. My parents live locally, my Dad always has, and continues to inspire me every day. I always try and make time for my family.

Q What originally inspired you to launch your business?

A I’ve always had a passion for fashion, but could never find any stores that did unique outfits without having to travel to London to find it. I saw a gap in the market for luxury party wear, but over the years we naturally fell into the prom side of things and then into bridal.

Q What do you think makes your business di erent from the competition?

A We run our businesses from High Street stores, not an out-building, warehouse or unit on an industrial estate, which I think makes us ultra premium. Our shops are extremely beautiful with no expense spared on decor and finish. They are quirky and unlike any other prom shops anywhere in the world and of course that makes them very 'instagrammable'. We want to make your prom or bridal shopping an experience that you will remember forever and want girls to say 'WOW' as soon as they walk in the door.

Q What’s new for 2023?

A Our brand new bridal store, Rivers Bridal, is launching on Billericay High Street and we are also arranging a Prom event in November to celebrate our ten years in business. A chance for all our customers to wear those

special dresses they have purchased and we will have some very special performers to make it a night to remember! I am also taking all of my sta away on holiday this summer to thank them for their hard work.

Q Describe a typical working day for you?

A I usually get into the shop around lunchtime after one of my amazing sta has opened up the shop. We attend to any voicemails and usually steam customer ordered dresses for a few hours before the mad after school rush begins. We get all the dressing rooms prepared, make sure we've got all our beverages stocked up for the day to keep our happy shoppers' thirst quenched, and then it's just about making sure each and every one of our customers are su ciently seen to and happy.

Q Out of work, where in the local area do you like to visit?

A Well, I'm a born and bred Billerician, and I'm so proud to be part of the fabric of our High Street. I honestly feel so supported by my community and there is a lot of love for Ri Ri’s, which I am so grateful for. Thankfully there are a lot of local businesses that I love frequenting so I don’t have to travel far to get what I need, plus I love to support small and local businesses rather than big chains. Nu Rose is a favourite of mine, socialising at Harry's Bar and I get my lunch everyday from Ravens Bakery. I also love to walk my dogs at Lake Meadows and feel genuinely grateful such a beautiful place is on my doorstep.

A I've been working as a Travel Agent since 1978, joining Abbotts Travel in 1994, I also manage the team. After being out of the travel industry for seven years, as a full-time mum, I wanted to go back to work locally for an independent travel agent. I saw an ad for Abbotts Travel, who were long established in the local area. I posted my CV through the letterbox and was interviewed the next day. Julian Abbott still jokes that he took a chance on me as I’d been out of the travel industry for a few years raising a family. Some 29 years later, I’m still here!

A First, I check my emails, then several face-to-face customer appointments booking holidays to di erent destinations. It’s non-stop as we’re so busy. Suppliers visit to update us on new hotels and openings. Making connections and networking means we can continue to o er our clients the best of everything.

Q Out of work, where in the local area do you like to visit?

A I have family in Epping and enjoy Epping Green and peaceful, countryside forest walks with my great-niece and nephews. Tandoor

At The Chambers in Buckhurst Hill is my favourite curry house for a meal with friends.

Q What do you always make time for away from work?

A I make time to cook dinner for family and friends. I love to spend time with my son’s French bulldog Dudley. Dogsitting encourages me to go for walks in Chigwell and catch up with family.

Q What originally inspired you to launch/work for your business?

A I was 19 when I started my business, Interior Angle – art gallery & framers, in Chelmsford. I had studied art at school and college and have a great love for retail, so my ambition was to combine these interests by opening my own shop.

Q What do you think makes your business di erent from the competition?

A Passion, honesty and loyalty. Too many galleries claim they can guarantee investment returns in the art world today. Unfortunately, we are an unregulated market, so anyone can claim to be an art dealer and escalate prices. I will always sell art based on my client’s taste. If you love the art, you will love it forever and if it increases in value, that is a bonus. I have worked in the industry for nearly 30 years and have been able to spot great artists to work with. We were the first gallery to show the sought-after Connor Brothers, so my clients all purchased early at extremely low prices.

Q What’s new for 2023?

A I have two great gallery spaces in addition to two online sites. It is always exciting when you grow artists. Before the pandemic we were exhibiting all over the world at international art fairs. We have continued to exhibit at art fairs in London, and 2023 sees us

expand to show in Cheltenham in April. I have been working with Selfridges for many years. Our gallery brand, Tap Galleries are the gallery online at Selfridges. It would be amazing to develop this with them further.

Q Describe a typical working day for you?

A In 29 years, I have never had a typical day at work. From choosing new collections to sell, new artists to work with, organising events in the galleries, house visits, curating shows… the list goes on.

Q Out of work, where in the local area do you like to visit?

A I live in Burnham-on-Crouch, everything I need in my downtime is there. I have a German Shepherd, which I love walking, and love sailing and paddle boarding.

Q What do you always make time for away from work?

A I am not big on holidays because work is always so busy. But nothing gets in the way of my skiing holidays.

Q Where do you see yourself in five years?

A I would like to expand the gallery concept with another store. It would be great to get back into Chelmsford and bring back great, collectable art for the town. I also run a reusable art packaging company, which I am striving to change the art world to become more climate aware. I developed ArtPakk, a protective art bag to store and move artworks. The plan is to make the industry bubble wrap free!

Twenty eight years ago I decided that to create a Client-Focused Advisory service I would be best able to serve my clients by setting up my own practice in Wealth Management. I have been running my practice, successfully, since then advising clients of all backgrounds how best to create financial freedom for themselves and their families.

Q What do you think makes your business di erent from the competition?

A Authenticity: I genuinely care for my clients and have built long-term and longlasting relationships with them. Integrity: we meet the expectations that we agree with our clients. I

employ a great team that adheres to this rule, because it matters. Honesty: clients know if you are interested in them and their financial well-being.

Q What’s new for 2023?

A I’m planning on completing my Chartered qualifications. Whilst I don’t believe that they will change how I relate to my clients it will deepen my learning and I’m a great believer in being openminded and seeking knowledge. It’s not an easy task, but one I feel ready to tackle now that the children are o my hands!

Q Describe a typical working day for you?

A My best days are those in front of my clients, so I aim for 2 or 3 meetings a day. The rest of the time will be spent in the o ce working with the team to ensure we deliver quality advice and client servicing.

Q Out of work, where in the local area do you like to visit?

A I’m a club runner with Orion Harriers so I do spend a lot of time in the forest! Otherwise you’ll find me making the most of our great range of restaurants including my favourite, TDH (Manos and his team are just great people).

Q What do you always make time for away from work?

A My running! I think getting out into the fresh air is vital for clarity of mind and if nothing else, lockdown taught us how important that is.

Serena Busman

Q What originally inspired you to work for your business?

A I have worked for West End Interiors since I was 19-years-old. I was recruited from college as an artist preparing hand drawings of high-end kitchens and bedrooms – before the days of digital CAD presentation. From there I developed a passion for design and quality products, learning both the skills for design and how to successfully run a business from the bottom up! I loved the feeling of making a sale, knowing the client was entrusting me to make the kitchen or bathroom of their dreams and the excitement of creating their unique special space.

Q What do you think makes your business di erent from the competition?

A We take great care and consideration in our designs before presentation to provide the best outcome for our clients’ needs. We try to think of everything the client could possibly need in addition to their requests, using our wealth of experience to bring solutions with a visual pleasure. We are not afraid to explore the architecture of the room, suggesting walls down or doorways

Q What’s new for 2023?

A Kitchen and interior fittings are very exciting right now, there are many rich materials and colours available at all budgets to be creative with. I think the best trends for 2023 are warm and rich neutrals, brushed bronze metals and a less minimalist living. Open shelving and greenery for a more earthy vibe.

Q Describe a typical working day for you?

A Busy! Alongside running our own fully fitted projects, we often collaborate with builders to ensure we all deliver to the clients’ high expectations, so I am often on site checking progress and measurements as the building evolves. Otherwise, I am meeting with new clients in their homes for site surveys or presenting new design projects in the showroom – with our own CAD system!

Q Out of work, where in the local area do you like to visit?

A I love living in Shenfield with its village-like appeal and many green open spaces for long dog walks. We have many individually owned shops on Hutton Road (many of which are female owned) serving the community on a personal basis so it feels like a very collective and inclusive place to be.

Q What do you always make time for away from work?

A Travel! As intrepid backpackers from a young age, my husband has kept us travelling and exploring the world, giving us important family time together and vital rest time for me.

Vicky Grammatikopoulou

Q What originally inspired you to launch your business?

A I think my inspiration is rooted in my background in teacher education and in my passion to make a di erence in peoples' lives helping them achieve their goals, raise their confidence and get their mojo back. I did set out promoting a positive body image and love connecting and building relationships – with clients, sta and the community.

Q What do you think makes your business di erent from the competition?

A We are CQC regulated and o er bespoke, tailored and highly personalised treatment plans by highly specialised medics. Among over 27 awards, we were named "Best Aesthetic Practice Globally" for 20/21 and our results, customer service and safety record are constantly praised by our clients in over 2,500 verified 5-star reviews.

Q What’s new for 2023?

A We have set up a 360-degree medical private menopause service, which includes blood screening and diagnostics, medical weight management, HRT prescription, nutritional coaching, intimate health procedures and life coaching. I feel very strong about

supporting and empowering women through this exciting phase of their lives.

Q Describe a typical working day for you?

A A good morning routine sets me for the day: a gratitude journal, a morning walk, a 5-minute meditation and goal setting. I am usually in one of our clinics in Essex, London or Germany 9-5 and no day is the same, really. I go swimming after work, dancing or meet friends. I find cooking dinner very therapeutic and I can't always resist a bit of Netflix binge-watching.

Q Out of work, where in the local area do you like to visit?

A Our local area is so beautiful. I never miss an opportunity to catch fresh air and have a nice meal or tea by the seafront in Southend and Leigh-onSea; we are so lucky to be so close to the water. I love walking my dog in Hockley Woods regularly too.

Q Where do you see yourself in five years?

A I hope to continue living my motto: "Celebrating the beauty of life", living in the present moment, surrounded by loved ones and having more time to travel.

Q What originally inspired you to launch your business?

A I believe the decision to run my own business came from a desire to not feel restricted in life. I watched my Grandmother relish running her own printing company, I grew up hearing her talking passionately about how her work was such a pleasure “why would you want to work for someone else?” She was a great influence on me.

Q What do you think makes your business di erent from the competition?

A Raspberry Interiors has three generations working within it. We have me, the wise one in her 50s with years of experience, we have Abby (my daughter) in her 30s who keeps ideas fresh and vibrant, and we have Laila in her 20s who brings in all her technical skills and energy. That’s why our designs are a good mixture of us all, a great mix of old and new.

Q What’s new for 2023?

A We moved to The Barn in Ingatestone April last year and renovated one section, which is now our working studio. Clients love coming to us to go through designs, it’s such an inspiring place. This is the year we want to break into the next section of the barn and create a beautiful showroom, showcasing more of our work.

Q Describe a typical working day for you?

A I have always been an early riser so I get to work around 7am. I treasure those first few hours of uninterrupted quietness. It's rare for me to be at my desk for a whole day. I am often found on a building site directing trades, or sitting at a clients dining table going over their designs, popping into a tile shop or flooring showroom to pick samples. To keep the business flourishing I try to tackle three areas of business every day. One thing from the past like profit and loss, one thing from the now like putting designs together ready for a presentation, and one thing from the future, such as speaking to architects about future projects we could be involved in.

Q What do you always make time for away from work?

A Like my Grandmother, I actually feel work is my home, it’s the place I want to be even on a Sunday. Having a fairly large extended family there’s normally something going on. When my daughters were growing up I used to always be the one throwing parties and entertaining, but not so much these past years. Life takes you through di erent phases doesn’t it – I have always loved every phase, just like I love right now.

Q What originally inspired you to launch your business?

A Well Benems is an anagram of my children’s names (Emma & Ben), and they were very much my primary focus as I began, and that was over 30 years ago. I wanted to build a business that would support us all. Also, I take great pride in the home – I think we all do, and with good reason. I wanted to play a part in helping others make their home the best it can be.

Q What do you think makes your business di erent?

A I like to think our customer service is second to none; from the moment you come through the door and we discuss your vision, be it for the home or the workplace, and then onwards to selecting what will realise that vision through to fitting it all. It’s why people return time after time. Well, that and the fact we can’t be beaten on price. Our team are most certainly the dream team, and customers’ testimonies and referrals support this so we all care.

Q What’s new for 2023?

A New stock, new suppliers, and an expansion on our homeware goods; it’s great when someone comes in for a carpet and is able to add a cushion

Q Describe a typical working day for you?

A I’m up with the lark, and rising at this time gives me some rare quietness. This is usually when I look at any possible changes/additions on our website and also doing my social media, as there’s little chance once I’ve arrived at work. So then it’s into the o ce bright and breezy, and away we go until closing. There’s no denying it can be exhausting at times because we’re a small sta and extremely busy, but I really can’t complain about that, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Q Out of work, where in the local area do you like to visit?

A It has been said I'm a social butterfly – work hard, play hard at times, at several local restaurants, or for that extra treat we head into London to catch a show or some amazing singers, together with a lovely meal. Such events also provide me with the opportunity to catch up with friends.

Q What do you always make time for away from work?

A Family. I do think of work as family too, but I’m never happier than being with my son and daughter, along with my grandsons who thankfully live close by. My sister and brother come to visit regularly too. The other thing, although a much rarer occurrence, is to take a holiday in the sun.

Q What originally inspired you to work for your business?

A I was inspired to work for Haslers to support my growth and join an ever growing firm. I knew Haslers were a training firm and could o er the support and time needed to develop and use my skills I had already gained. I also saw how others had been promoted from within. This allowed me to see a long term future at Haslers. Haslers also o er a big feel firm with the hands on approach of a smaller firm, with a huge variety of clients to support.

Q What do you think makes your business di erent from the competition?

A Haslers allows clients to manage all elements of their businesses under one roof. This gives clients the chance to focus on what really matters: their business. We take the worry away from the day to day finance function. Haslers o ers hands on support and cares about the businesses we work with. We tailor our work to the needs of our clients and appreciate there is not a one size fits all approach.

Q What’s new for 2023?

A New for 2023 are changes to VAT reporting and penalty structures, which will mean clients who have

not required support with their VAT returns before will require our help. This may result in complete changes to record keeping systems and software which we will help implement and manage. We will also continue to navigate new budgets and economic uncertainty with our clients to ensure each business is trading as e ectively and e ciently as possible.

Q Describe a typical working day for you?

A A normal day involves preparing, reviewing and discussing client management accounts, year end accounts, VAT returns and dealing with correspondence from clients and other parties such as HMRC. Other days may include visiting clients at their premises, attending board meetings or assisting with the implementation of accounting software and systems. During my day I help to oversee and support the Haslers accounts team.

Q Out of work, where in the local area do you like to visit?

A I enjoy visiting local restaurants and shops to catch up with friends. I also enjoy walks in Epping Forest with my one-year-old cocker spaniel, whose personal favourite spot in the local area is any muddy puddle he can find.

A Time for family is most important outside of work.

A One is walking through the beautiful countryside where I live with my children (Dorris aged 9 and Herbert aged 5). I also enjoy popping to the local pub with my husband for a cheeky glass of wine. I also really enjoy crafting.

Q How do you ensure a work/life balance?

A Since Covid lockdowns, which meant working from home a lot more, I have had to be conscious of ensuring that I have downtime away from the laptop as it's easy for time to slip away. I now make sure that when the children finish school I am present in their lives.

A I studied Law at university and loved the fast paced dynamic industry. Before I graduated I started working at the firm part time to gain experience and then continued once I graduated and completed my training. I loved the fact that the business I work for was a long standing reputable firm which had been in the city centre for years and had a great reputation.

Q What do you think makes your business di erent?

A The firm I work for is an established business dating back to the early 1900s. It provides a friendly and personal approach and we have various o ces in Essex. I believe that villages/towns prefer a local solicitor and friendly firm.

Q What’s new for 2023?

A John Fowlers LLP turns 100 years old at the end of this year. I’m sure this will bring much excitement within the firm. Stay tuned.

Q Describe a typical working day for you?

A On a typical working day I get to the o ce at 7.30am, review my emails and prepare the day ahead. I schedule work and dictate for my secretary and then deal with incoming emails, post and correspondence from other party solicitors. I also prepare for any conveyancing completions for the week or any appointments with clients.

Q Out of work, where in the local area do you like to visit?

A I like to visit Chelmsford, which is about 20 minutes or so from the o ce. It has a great variety of shops, restaurants and bars which is nice to visit on the weekend. As it is a university town they also always have markets on or events!

Q What do you always make time for away from work?

A I always make time to exercise either at home or at the gym after work. It is great for mental wellbeing and allows me to switch o after a busy day at work. It is important to have a good work/life balance so I tend to start work earlier to allow myself time in the evening for a HIIT class!

A I live in Henham, which is very rural. I love that I live in the countryside. We stick our wellies on at the weekend, walk over the field to the local pub, and then walk back taking in the beautiful scenery.

Q If you could go back in time and o er yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?

A Have confidence in yourself and know your worth. If you work hard and put in the e ort anything is possible.

Q Tell is about the background to The Boatyard Eatery...

A Chris and Marion Maestrani have owned the Boatyard since 1993 when it was a tea-room in a corrugated hut where the “conservatory now stands and spent the next two years converting the boatshed into the restaurant and adding the conservatory. The jetty was then built along with the boat storage shed and finally some landscaping with trees and plants. When other interests took them abroad the business was leased to other operators over a number of years but, when the lease came up for renewal it was too tempting a chance to take the business back for themselves.

Q Why were you keen to take it over?

A In my position as operations manager and chef for the previous owners, I along with my partner Amy running the front of house, had an amazing opportunity to work for Chris and Marion and use my prior knowledge of the business over the last three years to help the success of the new business model.

Q Is the location perfect?

A Frankly the location is one of the best restaurant locations in the local area. With easy access from the surrounding towns, onsite parking and in an area of outstanding natural beauty allowing you to visit us and take some beautiful walks, hiring one of our rowing boats or maybe while away the day on the terrace whilst eating from our breakfast, brunch and lunch menus ,or just a sweet or savoury snack from our deli and cake counter.

Q How long did the process take before the Boatyard Eatery was ready?

A The transition was relatively swift and I worked behind the scenes with the owners and our design crew to rebrand the business and give us a little facelift. To be honest, there are still lots of familiar faces around the building including many front house members and myself which made everything much easier in transition for our

customers which is most important. We haven’t changed too much at the moment as lots of things worked for our original customer base, but we have added a lot of new dishes and a new way of working the menu allowing us to change dishes on a weekly basis. I guess to answer the question, things felt di erent from day one but with a comforting familiarity.

Q Why the name, Boatyard Eatery?

A We wanted a name to cover everything we do. We are not just a café, but also not a formal restaurant. The Boatyard part was just really bringing back the name from its original identity and Eatery just felt right to cover our current relaxed but contemporary o ering with the ability to make additions in the near future.

Q How di erent will your o ering be to what has come before?

A We have many plans for the future including using the adjoining field for weddings and events as well as eventually bringing back some evening dining. To begin with though we plan to stay with an o ering that is familiar to our customers and slowly make additions to enhance the experience when visiting the Boatyard Eatery. We are keen to keep some of our premium evenings free for events such as our popular quiz nights, supper clubs and wine tasting evenings.

Q Aesthetically, have you made many changes to the look and feel of the site?

A We have already made a few minor changes in terms of the look of our menus, uniforms and signage, but there is much more to come. Our goal is simple, to give value to the customer.

Q How have you approached the menus?

A As mentioned, we firstly aim to give value to the diner. Secondly we love what we do and when we are having fun it shows in our o ering. A weekly changing menu, along with daily extras which involve local and seasonal foods allow us to keep our costs

competitive, which will be passed onto the customer.

Q Can you give us maybe 3 dishes that highlight your approach to food?

A This is always tricky but I would say Fish and Chips. Admittedly a simple dish but it is made with particular care. If we use cod, we use large fillets so we cut from the centre, triple cooked chips, chunky tartar, mushy peas and a side of our curry sauce. Smashed Avocado and fried egg on toast with tomato salsa, again simple but tasty, always on our brunch menu and you can change it up with chorizo or feta. Lastly, Duck confit with mixed bean and Toulouse sausage cassoulet, buttered greens. I have added this because a good confit of duck should be on everyone’s menu. I could go on for hours but our ethos on our main menu is to keep it honest with our own spin to elevate the simplest of dishes.

Q What else will you showcase?

A We have many years of experience in the team front and back of house and we are always looking to showcase our skills whilst having a bit of fun at the same time. We try and buy as responsibly as possible and always champion local suppliers. We are currently working with a local brewery to bring a “Boatyard Craft Beer” to our product line.

Q Will you be hosting any kind of events?

A We already have a pre mentioned and popular quiz night that is lots of fun but alongside this we are hoping to host a “Boatfest” with local bands, food and drink in the summer sun. We will also be starting supper clubs this year as well to kick start our evening dining and of course our ever popular row and dine will be back in July.

Beetroot

Soup with black beans & crispy shallots

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

For the ginger & turmeric oil (this will make more than you need but stores well in the fridge)

• 50g ginger, peeled and chopped

• 5g garam masala

• 1.5g turmeric

• 1g salt

• 250ml veg oil

For the mushroom broth

• 1L filtered water

• 50g dried mushroom

• 10g fennel seed

• 5g star anise

• 50g peeled ginger, sliced thin

• 2 cloves crushed garlic

• 50ml white soy

• 10g Dashi Powder

For the soup

• 2 leeks, whites only, sliced fine

• 2 shallots, sliced fine

• 10g button mushroom, sliced fine

• 2 sticks celery, sliced fine

• 2 cloves garlic, sliced fine

• 50g extra virgin olive oil

• Tsp Maldon salt

• 2 large beets or 400g beetroot

• 2g coriander seed

• 2g cumin seed

• 2g smoked paprika

• 2g ground cinnamon

• 700g mushroom broth

For the black bean topping

• 250g black beans, drained

• 50g red chilli, deseeded and brunoise

• 50g shallot brunoise

• 50g ginger, peeled and brunoise

• 50g chives, finely sliced

• 50g dill fronds, finely chopped

• 50g coriander stem, finely sliced

• 5g cumin, toasted and ground

• 5g ground black pepper

• 10g Maldon salt

• 1 lemon, zest of

• 50g crispy onions

METHOD

1 Make the ginger and turmeric oil by adding everything to the thermo at full speed for 8 mins until smooth. Pour o and leave to cool gently. Ideally, rest overnight, but you can also use it once cool.

2 Make the broth by adding all the ingredients to a pan and simmering

for half an hour. Steep for 4 hours, till cool. Strain and gently press.

3 Use a sharp mandolin to cut the shallots into 1mm rings, moving top to bottom. Submerge them in cold rapeseed oil in a pan, and gently bring up the heat. As the oil heats, stir every few minutes to avoid shallots clumping. Fry until the shallots turn a nut brown colour. Use a spider spatula to remove from the oil, and put on a towel lined tray to dry. They will continue to darken, to a golden colour. Store in an airtight container.

4 Preheat the oven to 180 degrees celsius. Wash the beetroot, rub with olive oil and sea salt, wrap in foil, and bake until the beetroot for 45-60 mins, depending on their size. Allow to cool, remove skins. Cut down into 3cm chunks.

5 Sweat the leeks, shallots, mushrooms, celery, garlic in extra virgin olive oil and salt until softened but not coloured, around 30 mins.

6 Add the beetroot and spices. Continue to cook for a further 5 mins or so. Add the celeriac and mushroom broth and bring up to a simmer. Blend to a smooth puree.

7 Preheat the oven to 160 degrees. Strain the beans and hang to remove water. Toss beans in extra virgin olive oil and toast in the oven for 15 mins. Allow to cool. Fold together with all remaining ingredients.

8 Serve by adding the soup to a bowl, add the bean topping and finish with a sprinkling of crispy shallots.

Carrots with quinoa, mojo verde and hazelnut sauce

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

• 200g quinoa

• 50g chopped almonds

For the carrots

• 1kg carrots

• 10ml olive oil Maldon salt

• Cracked black pepper

For the mojo verde

• 15g cumin seed

• 5g cayenne

• 4 cloves garlic, crushed

• 3 bunch coriander leaves, 1 bunch chives, chopped 5g Maldon salt

• 50g sherry vinegar

• 150g extra virgin olive oil

For the hazelnut sauce

• 1 shallot sliced

• 1 chilli seeded and sliced

• 10g ginger minced

• 2 cloves garlic minced, 15ml extra virgin olive oil, 50ml gluten-free soy sauce, 150ml coconut milk

• 20g honey or maple syrup

• 150g hazelnut butter

• 10g mild curry powder

METHOD

1 Preheat the oven to 220 degrees celsius.

2 Place the carrots on a baking tray and toss in the oil, salt and pepper. Roast in the oven until they are tender but still retain their bite.

3 Cook the quinoa according to the instructions on the packet, you can tell it’s done when the seed separates from germ. Drain and set aside.

4 Make the mojo verde by blending the cumin, cayenne, garlic, coriander, chives, vinegar to a thick paste. Dribble in the oil.

5 Make the hazelnut sauce. Sweat the shallot, chilli, ginger, garlic in oil until softened.

6 Add the soy and reduce by half. Remove from heat, add coconut milk, curry powder and honey. Transfer to a blender with nut butter. Pulse until smooth, then pass through a chinois.

7 Serve by mixing the roasted carrots with the quinoa. Plate up and then add a generous drizzle of the mojo verde and hazelnuts sauce. Finish with a sprinkling of chopped almonds.

Delica Squash & Braised Cavolo Nero with a green olive tapenade

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

• 400g short grain brown rice

• Delica Squash, cut into 90g wedges, deseeded

• 50g white miso

• 50g apple cider vinegar

• 75g extra virgin olive oil

• 70g pine nuts

For the jalapeno oil (this will make more than you need but stores well in the fridge)

• 100g jalapeno (deseeded save 1)

• 1 spring onion

• 200g neutral oil (rapeseed)

• 100g spinach

• 5g Maldon salt

For the braised cavolo nero

• 1 shallot, chopped

• 100g shiitake, chopped

• 2 garlic cloves, minced

• 50g extra virgin olive oil

• Tsp Maldon salt

• 500g cavolo nero, sliced fine

• 1 orange, zest and juice

• 1 lemon, zest and juice

For the green olive salsa

• 100g jalapeno oil

• 50g shallots, diced

• 50g chopped chives

• 50g minced green olive

• 4g ground white pepper

• 4g Maldon salt

METHOD

1 Preheat the oven to 200 degrees celsius.

2 Make the jalapeno oil by blending all ingredients at high speed, until smooth. Set aside, you’ll need this when you make the green olive salsa.

3 Rinse the brown rice in cold water. Cover with 1 litre of cold fresh water in a pan, and bring up to a simmer. After a few minutes, when no longer crunchy but not yet soft, still with a bit of chew, strain and rinse with cold water, and leave to cool and dry on a cloth lined tray.

4 Using a hand blender, blend the miso and vinegar together. Stream in the oil slowly to form a thick emulsion. Cover the squash wedges in the emulsion, then roast in the oven for 12 mins.

5 Sweat shallot, shiitake, garlic, chicory in extra virgin olive oil and salt, until softened but with no colour, around 30 mins.

6 Add in cavolo nero, saute for a few minutes until the cavolo nero is slightly wilted. Cool for a further 30 mins until totally soft.

7 Add the citrus juice and zest, and cook until juice has reduced to a syrup.

8 Make the green olive salsa by blitzing the jalapeno oil and all the other ingredients together in a blender until it forms a chunky mixture.

9 Turn the oven down to 140 degrees celsius and toast the pine nuts in an even layer for 30 minutes.

10 Serve by adding the brown rice and braised cavolo nero to a plate, top with the squash followed by the tapenade, and lastly the toasted pine nuts.

London’s store at Braintree Village, it was yet another indication of how the venue is fast becoming Essex’s hub for fashion

To say Absolutely is having a love in with Braintree Village is an understatement. We were blown away in February when the venue brought a little love to guests, as it partnered with Moniker Culture to present a weeklong love takeover to mark Valentine’s Day.

The 10-day urban art takeover aimed to bring love to the heart of Braintree Village by working with illustrative artists and bringing modern art installations and high impact visuals to celebrate love in all its forms; for each other, our communities and the world.

Guests were greeted by an extraordinary 5m x 5m heart installation in the entrance arch, setting the tone of the playful campaign. Further heart-shaped inflatables were dotted around the outlet, alongside colourful vinyls of artist illustrations, which provided a not-to-be-missed photo opportunity.

DUNE LONDON BARBOUR

Central to the Essex outlet’s love campaign was its ‘Art House’ – a physical pop-up art space in the centre of the shopping village, where artists and poets hosted exclusive workshops free of charge. The bold art project, in conjunction with Moniker Culture and named the ‘Heart of the Village’, worked with a number of leading female creatives, including British commercial artist and illustrator Rachael Presky, as well as illustrator Inma Hortas from Madrid.

It was just the latest must-visit from a venue that is truly showcasing the best in fashion and culture. Late last year, Braintree Village announced the re-opening of Radley London following a major refit, which has seen the brand redesign into its second new concept store, making it the second largest of its kind in the UK.

Taking inspiration from their HQ in London, Braintree Village’s new ‘townhouse’ store has been specially designed to create an elevated shopping experience with

design elements drawn from the opulent Georgian architecture of Mayfair.

Josef O’Sullivan, Centre Director at Braintree Village, says: “We are thrilled to be home to the second largest Radley London store in the UK, following its refurbishment. The new design elevates the in-store experience.”

This followed Braintree Village welcoming a Champion outlet to its line-up, with a 2,309 sqft store located opposite Calvin Klein, on the centre's North Mall. Vicky Ringer, Head of Retail at Champion, said at the time: “We are proud to be launching our fifth Champion outlet store, and Braintree Village is the perfect location in the heart of Essex. Q What is your background in aesthetics?

A Back in 2018/2019 I had a bit of a shake up after my husband walked out. I was 46 then and it was quite a daunting experience. I hadn’t worked for a while during my marriage, so I had to reinvent myself, get my identity back, and keep forging ahead for the sake of my son.

I always loved aesthetics and have had a few subtle treatments myself over the years and thought why not see if I could do this? So o I went and did anatomy and physiology. Biology was never my strong point, but I had a weird knack with this as there was an end goal so it fascinated me.

I passed with flying colours, which I was shocked about – I didn’t even tell my mum I was taking the exam as I was scared I’d fail and have to start again! I’ve never felt more proud or determined. I then went on to complete my basic and advanced filler and toxin training to make sure I was fully competent in the administration of fillers for lips, cheeks, chins and jawline as well as all facial contouring and anti-wrinkle treatments. Skin boosters, aqualyx fat dissolving, Dermaplaning, Microneedling, chemical peels, multivitamin shots, nonsurgical body contouring just to name a few of the bespoke services I provide in clinic were then added to the list.

My knowledge and experience soon led to all things non-surgical and no-needle and soon I was known as “The Fat Shatterer of Kent” as I have the Lipofirm pro machine and Geneo +. I literally shatter fat cells. I’m also an executive advanced practitioner for a company called Liquid Lipo Limited and with their gels in clinic and for home use, I can treat a multitude of other fat issues along with lipomas lymphoedema, and I have also recently started to help triple negative breast cancer patients alleviate scar tissue from mastectomy surgery. Obviously the latter had to be agreed with the patient’s oncologist and GP, but as all the ingredients are natural and non harmful, they are usually passed for clearance and then I can start my magic. I’ve helped my friend sleep better, have more movement in her arms and her pain from scar tissue formation has been eradicated in just two treatments.

Q What inspired you to initially launch Goddess Aesthetics?

A Being left with nothing. My marriage was over, I felt useless and unattractive, but I knew I was worth something and I also knew that as women we wear so many di erent hats everyday from chef to wife to mother to lover to nurse to doctor to taxi service etc that it got me thinking… We are all goddesses in our own right and are worth the earth and more, so that’s where the name came from for my clinics as I figured if I could give back someone’s self worth and make them feel gorgeous again, then my job was done.

Q How did you want to be di erent?

A I believe in subtle aesthetics to enhance natural beauty and I wanted to make everyone feel gorgeous and confident. Aesthetics and fat shattering isn’t just for women though, I have lots of male clients too who also want to feel God-like and good about themselves. I wanted to provide something in Kent and now Essex that hadn’t been available before and I did with my machines.

Q How would you say you have evolved?

A I’ve stayed ahead of the curve in nonsurgical body contouring, which gives me an edge – I can o er treatments that other clinics can’t. I’m also lucky as I now have a few celebrity clients and influencers too who put their trust in me to keep them looking fabulous and they spread the word.

Q You have launched Goddess Tan too now – why?

A Again, I saw a gap in the market for something aesthetically pleasing, ethically needed, environmentally friendly and sustainable, and for developing a tan like no other on the market. It’s the first product in the start of the Goddess Beauty range and it’s now available on Amazon as well as direct from me, which is exciting!

Q How would you describe how it works?

A It’s a self-tanning spray mist that you apply with a mitt after exfoliation, which gives you a long lasting (up to seven days) tan, smells like a divine perfume, genuinely improves

dimpled skin, is streak-free, vegan-friendly and has no parabans either. Even the bottle looks great and you can buy a refill pouch to top it up, which saves on plastic waste.

Q Why have you partnered with the Pink Ribbon Foundation?

A This charity is close to my heart for personal reasons. After surgery myself in 2019, I had a big scare so I want to give back and raise as much money as I can for this wonderful charity. That’s why we’ve chosen to give 10% of sales to them from the tan.

Q You have also recently opened a clinic in Loughton. Why was the area perfect for you?

A My friend Vicky owns the Angel Clinic in Loughton and she knew I had the Lipofirm Pro machine, and it made sense that I collaborate and bring this service to the area for her clients too as she knew there was a demand for it. People have permanent results with fat and inch loss, cellulite reduction, skin tightening and scar reduction with this machine. I have seen hundreds of women and men in my clinics who think nothing can be done to help them get their bodies back, but I have proven that I can help them.

The good news is that unless you’re managing a skin condition, you may not need to visit a dermatologist to soothe dry skin. Instead, you might consider adding one of many home remedies to your skincare routine. If you feel your dry skin needs a little TLC, try one of these easy at-home remedies.

HOMEMADE OATMEAL HONEY MASK

Oatmeal makes a great exfoliator or mask. Mix two tablespoons of oats with one tablespoon of honey and a dash of water. You can use it to exfoliate and wash it o immediately or leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes as a soothing, hydrating mask.

To treat dead skin cells on the body that might be giving your skin a dry texture and appearance, you may want to consider a gentle homemade sugar body scrub. Combining one cup of brown or granulated sugar with half a cup of coconut oil, add a few drops of lavender essential oil, which lends a natural fragrance and may promote relaxation and decrease anxiety. Gently rub the scrub into your skin for up to 30 seconds, then wash it o with lukewarm water. Next, use a soothing body moisturiser to lock in the benefits of freshly exfoliated skin.

A DIY RICH, CREAMY AVOCADO MASK

A homemade mask of avocado is another natural way to soothe dry skin. This face mask is full of antioxidants and probiotics that will promote healthy, glowing skin. Combine half an avocado with quarter cup plain Greek yoghurt. This will help improve your skin texture because of its lactic acid content. Add a drizzle of manuka honey and one teaspoon of turmeric for anti-inflammatory benefits and improve symptoms of skin conditions such as eczema. Apply the mixture to the skin, and let it set for 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing o .

EASY OATMEAL BATH SOAK

A cup of oatmeal in a warm bath can naturally rehydrate dry skin. The oat product itself is soothing, and it helps your skin retain moisture from the bathwater. If you have eczema, oatmeal may relieve dry, inflamed, or irritated skin associated with atopic and contact dermatitis.

USE HONEY AS A SPOT TREATMENT

Honey has emollient and humectant e ects that can soften your skin and help it retain moisture. It’s also an alternative treatment for various skin conditions, including dermatitis, psoriasis, and dandru .

Honey, especially manuka honey, is also e ective at healing wounds; its natural antimicrobial benefits keep the a ected area moist and has a thick consistency that works as a barrier against infection.

Honey is a good base for face mask recipes, and it can be a powerful spot treatment for patches of dry, irritated skin. Manuka honey can increase wound healing while decreasing inflammation in the skin. For best results, apply honey in small amounts to your face. Leave it on for several minutes before rinsing it o .

How our writer fell for the beautiful Italian island

My two previous holidays to Sardinia did not go well.

The first was in 1977 as part of an annual exchange with a French family. I was 12, lonely and lost to the language of my hosts and the country, so two weeks in paradise felt like hell. But then I fell for a pretty Italian girl with a perm.

One problem – she was 15 and I looked about 10.

Oblivious to the fact that I had no chance, I researched the vocab’, then blurted out the immortal words in the hotel’s junior disco: “Ti amo!”. I love you, no less. I deserved a passionate kiss for courage, but she muttered “Grazie,” and patted my arm as if consoling the recently bereaved. Sardinia unfairly su ered for this rejection.

I ventured back there in 2014 with my wife, Emma, and our son, Joseph, but this trip was ruined by a rotten apartment in the middle of nowhere. We spent most of the week in the car getting lost. Sardinia got the blame again.

But today my love a air with this jewel of an island has finally blossomed. I am stretched out on the netting at the bow of a 1927 wooden sailing boat called Pulcinella. Our energetic and chatty deckhand Leonardo has just released the burgundy sails and we are gliding across the most exquisite turquoise sea I have seen this side of the Maldives.

Joseph, now 14, is next me and staring out in silent awe at the islands of La Maddalena Archipelago in the far north. Emma is sipping chilled Vermentino local white wine beneath a canopy. This is the last day of our holiday and, without doubt, Sardinia has delivered la dolce vita dream. Mama mia, where to begin?

In summary, Sardinia has everything: perfect weather, endless sandy beaches, crystal-clear water, delicious cuisine and a friendly welcome wherever you go. It is blessed with charm, authenticity and variety. You can slump under the sun and do nothing, or you can venture o to explore local culture and discover something historical or rustic. Amazingly, all this is just two hours from Gatwick.

We have been in the embrace of Delphina, one of Sardinia’s most respected hotel groups. It was founded in 1992 by two

Sardinian friends – Francesco Muntoni and Salvatore Peru – and is still run by both men and their families. Today, it has eight properties scattered across the north. It repeatedly wins a clutch of awards in the annual travel biz Oscars, not least the prestigious 2022 title of World’s Leading Green Independent Hotel Group.

All hotels are run on 100% eco energy and follow an impressive list of planet-friendly initiatives. There is no greenwashing here. Delphina is also driven by using all things Sardinian, from local food and sta to the handwoven wicker bins and rainbow rugs that add splashes of colour throughout the hotels. Even the tiny bright mosaic tiles that are stylishly inlaid everywhere are hand-painted and kilned locally.

Our trip began with two nights at Cala di Falco, one of Delphina’s smaller hotels

on the famous Costa Smeralda. Its simple tranquility is an ideal place to quickly decompress from London stress. The sea is just across a track from the pool and the lively town of Cannigione is a 15 minute stroll away. Perfect for an aperitif or dinner.

From here, we drove north to the oasis of luxury that is Valle dell’Erica, a five star resort in the Gallura region. This sits discreetly in 28 hectares of unspoilt hillside studded with huge grey granite boulders and swathes of wild flowering bushes and herbs.

Erica is bordered by the most gorgeous coastline that looks out to the islands of the archipelago and Corsica. Our first few days drift by in easy, self-imposed seclusion. We hit La Licciola beach most mornings, then retreat in the afternoons to one of the many swimming pools (all salt water), or the spa.

Then we have one last sun-downer dip in the small private pool by our luxury duplex room on the hill before changing for dinner.

One recurring treat at Erica is undoubtedly the food. From day break to nightfall, it is sensational and never falls short. Instead of tables of pre-prepared food, there are multiple chefs on hand to cook freshly for you. Whether it is the huge catch of the day, langoustines, fillet steak, lamb chops, pasta, seared tuna or octopus, nothing is too much trouble. These aren’t bu ets, they are banquets. It is hard to tear yourself away from the dell’Erica resort, but we set o exploring on many occasions. We visited Porto Cervo, the mecca for glitz where superyachts drop anchor, the street markets at Palau, and wandered among the stone houses in the old village of Aggius.

An unforgettable day for me was hiking with Jospeh at the most northerly point of the island at Santa Theresa Gallura – stupidly, during the height of the midday sun. We picked our way over and between enormous shapes of granite that looked like dinosaur vertebrae until we reached the sea. There, we dipped our tired feet in the cool water and sluiced our burning faces, to then gaze at the coast of Corsica seven miles across the Straits of Bonifacio. Wonderful.

It had taken me 45 years, but it felt good to put my hand on my heart and say: Sardinia – ti amo!

Known as the ‘fixer’ in building circles, Essex carpenter Raphael Meade is an odd job man like no other

Since Absolutely launched this title, it’s fair to say we haven’t featured someone like Raphael Meade in our homes and interiors section. We first came across the Essex local because of his carpentry work, but dig a little deeper and you open up a real box of tricks, covering everything from ballet dancing to starring in a reality TV show that saw him stranded in a remote part of Scotland with 22 other participants.

With so much to cover off, it made sense to start right at the beginning. “From as far back as I can remember, I have always been building or dismantling things,” Raphael –sharply dressed (fashion icon next, perhaps?) – says on his childhood. “The main reason was because I wanted to know ‘how, why and

what’ made things work the way they did, and could I add to it, strengthen it and make it last longer or just improve it?”

Although, as Raphael says, he was “always involved in carpentry from childhood”, it wasn’t an instant career pathway until he reached his mid-20s. “From 16 to 24 years I did a multitude of jobs with no direction, no aim, and no focus. I had my ‘stupid head on’,” he admits with a rueful shrug.

Once he did knuckle down, however, he swiftly became well renowned in building circles, particularly with his ‘can do’ attitude. “I’ll work on almost anything, from hanging doors to building complete homes,” he says, “but I suppose I specialise on the more awkward type jobs, or jobs that have a little flair to them and are not standard in nature. Bespoke, for want of a better word.”

His ability to tackle such jobs led to him being given his own moniker. “I became known as a fixer because I’d get jobs or someone would call me in on a job because the previous tradesperson had ‘messed it up’ and now the clients were seeking a way to ‘put it right’,” he chuckles. “The title ‘Fixer’ actually comes from a glass company I used to work for. My then guvnor used to say to me, ‘just chuck it in…’ to which I’d reply, ‘I don’t do chuck’. With a gentle laugh, he’d answer back with, ‘You haven’t got a malicious hammer swing in you, have you boy?’”

One job that he found himself involved with – but certainly not because of things going wrong – was a unique ‘straw bale house’ project in North London. It’s the home of architect Sarah Wigglesworth, and its unique design – such as a palette of ordinary materials transformed into innovative wallings and evocative claddings – caught the eye of TV show Grand Designs. “I was just one of the workers with no screen time,” Raphael says, “but what I did get [from the experience] was the finer, more dextrous type jobs within the home that required quality finish.”

Soon, though, Raphael was appearing in front of the camera as his career diversified. Eden was a reality TV series, first broadcast on Channel 4 from 18 July to 8 August 2016. It featured 23 participants living for a year in a remote part of Scotland, attempting to build a self-sufficient community. “I actually took part in the show not because I wanted to be on TV, but because I was, up to that point, an ‘armchair enthusiast’ always shouting at the TV, ‘Oh I could do that!’” he laughs.

During the show, he lived and worked as a carpenter for a number of months before leaving under protest from the behaviour of other cast members. It was a sign that Raphael is a person that stands up for the underdog – “That show changed me as a person, to appreciate and have more empathy and sympathy for others” – and his charisma has seen him appear in several TV ads in recent years.

Today, you will find Raphael still working in the building trade, but also teaching carpentry – as well as coaching martial arts. “Maybe it’s because I can still think like someone that ‘doesn’t know’, meaning I can relate to people who struggle,” he says on that side of things.

“It gives me a great feeling to see someone blossom when they ‘get it’. If I were to get to a point in my life where I don’t do anything, this I will still do. The accumulation of my years of struggling to know what I now know and can do must not go to waste.”

But there is still one thing that maybe, just maybe, we can add to his impressive CV one day. “I love ballet,” he smiles. “The best present I have ever had to date was to watch a rehearsal performance at the Sadler’s Wells theatre, organised by my wife. We sat there in the empty auditorium, just us and the dancers on stage. I was mesmerised. If I could live my life again, give up all I have now and run the risk of a new unknown life as a dancer, I’d jump at it. Letting go, expressing yourself through music… YES!”

Astunning single-storey extension for a gorgeous property in Colchester has proved a hit – with both the home’s owner and the rest of the neighbourhood. Carried out by leading South East home improvement company SEH BAC, the spectacular conservatory features a stunning set of bifold doors providing a seamless transition to the garden and a thermally efficient glass roof to flood the space with natural light.

With a desire to extend their living space in style, the client visited SEH BAC’s stateof-the-art showroom in Colchester. The customer says: “We had a conservatory there originally, but it was much smaller, and we decided to put a bigger one in for an added room onto the lounge.

“When I was out shopping I saw the SEH BAC showroom, had a look around, and really liked everything they had. Laurence and the operations team came out to view our home and they were so easy to work with. The installation all went to plan, the SEH BAC team were brilliant, and we are really pleased with the result. WALLPAPER: BRIAR ROSE – GREEN VERDITER

Compressing two centuries of decoration into a single collection of wallpapers is no small task. National Trust Papers III is an authentic collection of eight historic wallpaper designs adapted and recoloured for use within the modern interior, comprising 45 colourways in designs created from original source material belonging to the National Trust and put into production by Little Greene.

The collection focuses on pieces found at three historic houses: Oxburgh Hall and Felbrigg Hall in Norfolk and Newark Park in Gloucestershire, with the addition of one design that has been recoloured and revived from the Little Greene archive. Employing traditional methods of printing that have remained unchanged for over 100 years, there is an array of hand-painted birds, stylised florals and scrolling trails, as well as a traditional Toile de Jouy.

This marks a new approach to pattern colouration within the Little Greene collections, reinterpreting the colour-drenching paint trend that has led to enveloping, intimate interiors, with many of the wallpapers featuring bold tonal colourways. These designs include Poppy Trail in shades of Masquerade pink, and Hoja in four colourways, including Hellebore and Air Force Blue.

This is part of a campaign to support the National Trust’s work – for the sale of each roll of wallpaper, a contribution is made in support of the National Trust’s important work caring for 500 places, including 780 miles of coastline, historic sites, 250,000 hectares of countryside

Ruth Mottershead of Little Greene says: “Our collaboration with the National Trust allows us to uncover incredible designs and colours that can be shared with the nation through new wallpaper and paint collections. The contributions made from the sale of every roll of National Trust wallpaper and each tin of paint goes towards supporting the National Trust’s conservation work, to ensure the nation’s historic houses, gardens and landscapes can be enjoyed for years to come.”

Equally, for the National Trust, Becky Stanford adds: “Little Greene undertakes research into our original wallcoverings, designs and colourways, allowing us to learn more about the collections in our care.”

Bird and Bluebell c.1830-1870 is an elegant mural, featuring birds, bees and bluebells has been created from remaining fragments of wallpaper found at Felbrigg Hall in Norfolk. Originally on a striped background, the remaining source material has been adapted, transformed and recoloured to suit the contemporary interior. Volières c.1950, is a more contemporary find, featuring 1950s style doves, ribbons and flowers and is a reimagination of an 18th-century design. Found at Oxburgh Hall, an archived photograph revealed the location of this wallpaper in one of the bedrooms in the private family quarters. The

wallpaper is thought to have been a visible reminder of Oxburgh’s last days under family ownership, having been put up for sale just months after the wallpaper was produced. Poppy Trail, c.1890-1900, is a flamboyant floral design featuring large, stylised poppies and is a classic example of those in production during the late 19th century. Briar Rose, c.1845-1915, is characterised as being in the ‘Arts and Crafts’ style, evident in the densely stylised natural motifs – this wallpaper was originally designed by children’s book illustrator, Walter Crane. Many of Crane’s drawings became nursery wallpapers and ‘Briar Rose’ began its life as the background to a wallpaper called ‘The Sleeping Beauty’, which featured characters from Sleeping Beauty among the roses. Found at Oxburgh Hall, little is known about where in the house the wallpaper was used, as much of the original exists today only as loose samples. Upper Brook St., c.1920, features brightly coloured kniphofia flowers, commonly known as torch lilies or red hot pokers (African in origin, but named after German horticulturalist Johan Hieronymous Kniphof). They were recorded as having been hand-painted and stuck over a pre-hung wall covering in a late 18th century Upper Brook Street house as a bespoke decoration. Lovers’ Toile, c.1950, a contemporary take on a classic pattern is a post-WWII reinterpretation of an 18th-century French Toile de Jouy design. Featuring vignettes of people in activity including fishing, dancing and gardening, this single colour design has been printed in five modern colourways. Dahlia Scroll, c.1890-1900, is a scrolling floral design reminiscent of the early work of Voysey. Coloured in seven different ways, including elegant neutrals, bold blue and vibrant yellow, this pattern would have originally been block printed, possibly by Jeffrey & Co.

“For a renter-friendly way to integrate sunset tones into your home, hanging wall art and mindfully placing accessories are great, less permanent alternatives to painting surfaces. Curating a collection of vases, candles, rugs, and hardware in orange and golden tones to disperse into a space such as a hallway creates a chic, monotonal vibe that will be sure to impress guests as they first enter your home. One of my favourite ways to integrate colour artfully is by replacing unin-

teresting or tired chrome hardware such as door and drawer handles with beautifully bold substitutes.”

If you're not ready to commit to an all-out orange aesthetic, updating your soft furnishings is an ideal alternative. This way, as each season rolls around, you can simply switch out your throws, cushions, curtains and bedding for a more seasonally appropriate replacement, and store the old one away for its return later in the year. “Reinventing your interior style doesn’t have to come with a 12-month minimum commitment contract. To easily achieve a consistently seasonally appropriate home, simply rotate your soft furnishings a few times a year. During the summer months, keep your furnishings light and breezy using materials such as linen and cotton. When the weather begins to cool down, heavier fabrics such as velvet and boucle will help to transform your current interior to form a cosy space for the colder months.

“Consider updating your bedding to a chic burnt orange and crisp white combination, adding texture and pattern through decorative pillows and throws. Combine this with co-ordinating curtains, which will help to keep the heat in, and a sunset-toned rug to keep your feet warm and comfortable – and just like that, you’ve created a wonderfully seasonal and weather appropriate boudoir space.”

Why it’s important to allow children to express themselves through the arts - and also why we shouldn’t deter them from being inventive

Over the years, I have discovered that I am a person to whom my living and working environment matters. Two or three years ago –amidst the summer lull from Covid – we managed to go through eight weeks of much-needed kitchen renovation. The lead up to the building work meant that every spare moment was filled with emptying every cupboard and deciding what we really wanted and needed, and included many visits to the charity shop and o ers of kitchenware to our children for their future flats!

Such was the cathartic satisfaction of cleansing the kitchen cupboards that it didn’t stop there and, gradually, each cupboard in the house received the same treatment, there was a reworking of my o ce (which I now love!) and generally enjoying the

mother of all decluttering. My family thought that I was slightly mad but oh, was it good. I now ensure that everything that I have around me brings joy… well, almost.

So, what has this got to do with education, you may ask? Well, rather a lot. Throughout my career in education, I have always realised that developing a child’s creativity, whether through art or other ways, is vitally important. Creative activities o er an outlet of our thoughts and emotions, o er di erent ways of communication and can provide deep satisfaction and, indeed, a sense of calm (as experienced in my decluttering phase).

Young children never say that they can’t draw or paint, they simply get on with it and embrace the experience. However, once they reach school age, they become more self-critical and gradually many begin to move away from the enjoyment and satisfaction that they found as toddlers. Likewise, little children are creative

– they can always find many ways to use a box, for example, such as climb into it, sit on it and squash it, make it into a house… and so it goes on. As they grow, it is all too easy for the open boundaries of infancy to become tighter and more clearly defined – and creativity, in many areas, can become diminished.

Sadly, I believe that the education system, and today’s teaching methods, can add to the demise. As an eight-year-old, my wonderfully creative, free-thinking daughter brought home her summer report. Reporting on art, her teacher wrote that she had actually dared to use her paintbrush the wrong way up. For me it was a triumph, but not so for her rather tight-lipped teacher. The proof was in the pudding – or rather career, however, and the videos and PowerPoint creations that she produced as a young child have led to a career where these are used at a royally high level, whilst collecting exceptional academic grades and a wonderful time at school along the way.

So, in this edition full of creative and design flair, I would urge you, as parents, to embrace the arts and creativity of all kinds with your children. We all have creativity within us, whether that is manifested in art, music, colour, clothes, ideas º or even enjoying the wonderful opportunity of creating a home or even a room that brings you pleasure and joy.

Enjoy helping your children to grow and express their creativity, whatever shape it may take.

The Head of Bancroft’s School in Woodford Green, Simon Marshall, on o ering lots of opportunities to drive their pupils on to achieve their very best

Q Could you give us a potted history of Bancroft’s School…

A We were originally founded in 1737 and our site was on the Mile End Road, where Queen Mary University of London is now. Francis Bancroft, a merchant and draper, left his estate to the Drapers’ Company to found a school and an almshouse. The school was for 100 boys, to provide basic education between the ages of 7 and 14. It was expected that pupils would go on to apprenticeships. We moved to our current site in the late 19th century and o ered a much-expanded curriculum and eventually prepared pupils for entry to university or to the professions. The

late 20th century saw Bancroft’s becoming a fully co-educational day school with a Prep School on the same site; we are happy to stick with what we have now become!

Q How long have you been Head at the school for and what originally attracted you to the role?

A I joined Bancroft’s in September 2016 from running The English College in Prague and, just like that school, Bancroft’s is a selective academic, co-educational and aspirational school. It also had the added attraction of being a short cycle-ride away from my home in Walthamstow.

Q Today, what does Bancroft’s o er?

A Well, I could take up the whole issue with this answer but, in short, we aim to provide a transformational experience for every child. We want every child to have a really wide range of opportunities and challenges throughout their time in the school, and also to have a great time. From outside most people seem to see us solely in terms of our examination results, but these are very narrow metrics to judge any school; education here is just as much about sport, music, drama, di erent activities and clubs, service-opportunities and so on as it is about any subject – all of these aspects of

school life are essential if our pupils are to leave here prepared for the world ahead. The qualities, skills and understanding that might help a child go on to live a fulfilling adult life are not found just in a set of grades.

Q Do you o er anything that you believe makes you stand out?

A The outstanding aspect of any school is its pupils – we are continually surprised and delighted at their talents, energy and determination. I imagine every Head feels the same!

Q If we chanced upon a typical classroom scene, what would we find? We don’t have ‘identikit’ templates for lessons; we give teachers the freedom to innovate and to go above and beyond the curriculum at all levels. I hope you’d catch sight of the passion, knowledge and enthusiasm of our teachers

being shared with our pupils; hear laughter and lively conversations as well as challenging questions from both teachers and our pupils. Teaching is full of di erent tones and shades of learning – from an atmosphere of quiet calm and concentration, to the energy and exuberance of a drama or PE lesson and the purposeful hum as a class splits into di erent groups working collaboratively. I hope too that you might pass by our learning support hub, where we provide individual support for di erent learners’ needs and see the di erence that close, focused attention can make to less-confident pupils. I think if you walked around you’d see a huge variety of di erent activities and methods being used.

Q What have been the highlights of this school year to date?

A If I had to pick one from last term it would be our House performing arts’ competition,

where our four Houses vie with each other through a range of musical and dramatic performances. Pupils from all year-groups take part and it provides an amazing opportunity for them to work together, entirely on their own initiative, to create an extremely varied series of performances. It is one of the first big events of the year: the whole school watches it together and huge numbers of pupils are involved in some way or another.

Q And what are you looking forward to in 2023?

A Again, there is too much to list in this brief space: there are numerous trips, tours and expeditions, closely-contested fixtures, concerts and plays, field days, competitions in most subjects, debates and spelling bees, partnership events with other schools, university fairs that we host and so on. I am still grateful we can plan these events knowing that they will go ahead. The last few years have not been great for our children so there is real pleasure in knowing that we can o er them the full range of activities and events.

STEM FOR WOMEN

Recently, there was an article by the BBC on how physics is seen as a maledominated industry. As a female teacher working in STEM, it is shocking to think that in today’s world there is still such a gender divide in our schools and in the profession itself.

I am sure many will think back to their time in science lessons, and most will recall that their teachers were male. Thankfully, I am proud to say that this is not the case in my current role as Head of Physics at Royal Hospital School – where 50% of the subjects are led by women.

However, the BBC article certainly highlights the lack of female representation in science and will make many women reflect on what it truly means to be a female working in STEM. For me, it is important to use my role to face this lack of representation and push the next generation to see science as genderless.

For those schools looking to increase this figure, it is imperative to have a topdown approach to gender-stereotyped subjects, with strong female teachers promoting the message that STEM subjects are for everyone. It is also important for male teachers to be champions of women in science to

create a unified and inclusive message. There is also a huge absence of women scientists within the national curriculum and this is something that can be changed. We want to see Curie, Meitner, Johnson, Burnell and Somerville named to ensure some gender balance, and this is something as teachers we can start mentioning within the classroom.

It is also important to face these topics head on with the next generation of talent and debate the implications of the number of women going into science and other STEM subjects.

The overwhelming majority of Year 11 physics pupils at Royal Hospital School feel that the BBC article was a true reflection of their perception of the subject – and that’s despite having female physics teachers standing in front of them. Some pupils said they had found a love for the subject and wanted to continue the subject at A-level, hoping to be part of the change. Others spoke openly about how they felt they would be

perceived as ‘di erent’ if they chose to study physics and maths further, which was why they had decided to go with other subjects for A-level.

The debates we have in the classroom are incredibly important, as the sector has notably faced challenges in the uptake of women in STEM subjects. By understanding the viewpoints of pupils and responding with positive examples, we can open their eyes to how they can help change that stereotype. This, in turn, will help create the next generation of talent in science.

• Birds flying overhead;

• Having the space to try out more physical activities, such as throwing techniques;

• Talking about the change of seasons and then creating objects that reflect this while being surrounded by the natural world.

If Forest School had to be explained, one of the best ways to do it is by considering the humble stick. A stick can be a musical instrument, a magic wand, a measuring stick, a paint brush, an arrow, a pen or a living creature.

We’re moving intoa time of growth, renewal, of new life being born, and of the cycle of life once again starting. OK, so there’s been a couple of per cent drop in house price growth, but when you consider the fact that prices went through the roof during the pandemic, perhaps this is no bad thing.

Properties most definitely are selling, especially at the higher end of the market.However, a word of warning to thosecurrentlylooking to sellin this sector – remember that your home isprobably you’remost valuableasset and deciding to sell it is one of the

biggest decisions you’ll likely ever make. Therefore it is vitally important that you choose your estate agent wisely. All too often I see sellers opt for the agent who will save them the most amount of money,not realising that this is invariably a false economy. My belief is that good estate agency requires considerable time and e ort on the agent’s part, building an excellent relationship with the client so that they feel totally supported throughout the entire selling process. Vendors need to trust their agent, who should be the best in their market, with brilliant people skills, unrivalled negotiation skills, fantastic local knowledge, and local contacts that are second to none. We often focus on the inside of our homes, but the outside is just as important. Consider the entire property, from garden and guttering to carpets and curtains, and if there are any a ordable refurbishments or repairs that could be done you may want to consider these.

RideLondon -Essex

The greatest festival of cycling in the capital and the county returns in 2023

This year will mark the 10th anniversary of the hugely popular event RideLondon, which was established by the Mayor of London in 2013 as an Olympic legacy event from the 2012 London Games.

A new one-year agreement with Essex County Council brings RideLondon back to the county on Sunday 28 May following the successful first year of the partnership in 2022. The festival will feature the iconic RideLondon-Essex 100-mile challenge, along with the RideLondon-Essex 60 and 30mile inspiration rides and the ever-popular RideLondon FreeCycle, which gives riders of all ages and abilities a rare chance to cycle on tra c-free roads in central London.

Will Norman, London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, says: “RideLondon is one of the highlights of the year for our capital, with something for everyone to enjoy – from giving confidence to new cyclists, to enabling more experienced riders to push themselves. Cycling has seen a huge boom and it's wonderful to see Londoners choosing green and sustainable modes of transport to get around. This is always a great event and I encourage cyclists of all ages and abilities to get involved.”

Councillor Lee Scott, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways Maintenance and Sustainable Transport, says: “RideLondon-Essex 2022 was a successful inaugural event, but we want to make RideLondon-Essex 2023 even better. RideLondon is focused on inspiring people from all backgrounds to take up cycling and the shared aims of the Mayor of London, Essex County Council and London Marathon Events to showcase cycling as a sustainable method of transport and to promote the physical and mental health benefits of exercise.
