Lisa Byrne takes a trip down wedding memory lane, featuring celebrities, concerning kisses and county landmarks

The best advice I was given before my wedding was that not everything would go to plan, but to let it go over your head because all that truly matters is that you’re marrying the person you love. And yes, many things did go wrong (including an ambulance call out!), but I remembered this advice, took a deep breath, and embraced the most amazing day.

Thankfully, living in Yorkshire the one thing we can depend upon is the huge choice of stunning locations and locally designed gowns. Our county has even been a favourite wedding spot for both traditional and pop royalty. Yorkshire beauty Katharine Worsley of Hovingham Hall became the Duchess of Kent when she married Prince Edward in front of his cousin HM The Queen in 1961 at York Minster, while more recently pop’s Ellie Goulding wed Caspar Jopling at the cathedral.

As a magazine editor I attended many star-studded weddings. The most notorious was Peter Andre’s nuptials to Katie Price in 2005. How can we forget images of reformed glamour girl Katie arriving in a white pumpkin carriage wearing a huge pink tulle and satin gown and a foot high diamanté tiara. While chatting to Peter and Katie as photos were taking place, I remember sadly thinking I’d never seen such an unhappy bride (Katie later revealed she was su ering post-natal depression after having their son Junior).

But the strangest nuptials I reported on was of Liza Minnelli to music producer David Gest. Over a freezing weekend in New York, OK! was invited to cover the Hollywood wedding of the decade. Moments before the ceremony, I opened a door at the back of the Marble Collegiate Church and stumbled into a tiny antechamber with just Diana Ross, Elizabeth Taylor and Michael Jackson present, gossiping away. When the priest later announced that the groom can kiss the bride it was the only time in my life when I’ve witnessed a bride’s lips being sucked. Even fellow guest, Donald Trump, was shocked, saying, “I’ve been to many weddings. And I have never seen a kiss like that before.”

Years after their highly acrimonious divorce, I bizarrely bumped into David Gest in York. The TV star explained that he’d been on a train from London to Edinburgh and couldn’t believe what beauty he was seeing when it stopped at York, so he jumped o the train, explored and decided to make York his home. After he died, David’s ashes were scattered over Cli ord’s Tower in the city where he was happiest.

Harrogate Theatre’s award-winning pantomime is celebrated across the town and beyond, and this year Aladdin will be flying in from Wednesday 23 November 2022–Sunday 15 January 2023 full of fantastic characters, pun-tastic jokes and dazzling sets and costumes. Whether you’re 3 or 103, the pantomime is fun for all.

Cracked Nuts – Camper Than Christmas (Wednesday 7 December) is a cabaret remake of the ballet classic, The Nutcracker, complete with sugar plum fairies, toy

soldiers and snowflakes… but with a brilliant drag comedy twist! This will be taking place at Cold Bath Brewery so grab a drink and bring your biggest laughs to this alternative high energy Christmas show.

The Bootleg Beatles (Thursday 8 December) are set to delight audiences with their popular tribute to the Liverpudlian legends. From ‘Love Me Do’ to ‘Let It Be’, they’ll be performing all the hits we know and love. Classical cross-over group Il Divo will sound incredible at the Harrogate Convention Centre (Saturday 10 December) before The Bon Jovi Experience (endorsed by Jon Bon Jovi himself) promises all the hits including ‘Livin’ On a Prayer’, ‘Always’ and ‘It’s My Life’ (Tuesday 13 December). As we get closer to Christmas, Take That’s Greatest Hits are performed live on stage in Re-Take That (Thursday 15 December) and 80’s Mania (Sunday 18 December) dances into town.

The theatre is also already selling tickets well into the new year as well so keep an eye out for Dave Spikey (Friday 20 January), The Neil Diamond Story and the popular Hyena Comedy Club (Saturday 21 January).

Jay Blades has a bit of a soft spot for Yorkshire. It’s one of the reasons The Repair Shop front man chose the city for last year’s BBC2 spin-o show, Jay’s Yorkshire Workshop. “Yorkshire has a lot of history, but I think it’s the people that make it. There is a real warmth,” the 52-year-old tells me during a brief break in his hectic TV filming schedule. “When I’m in Yorkshire, I love it. It’s probably one of the only other places in the UK that I would live and that’s solely down to the people there.”

While The Repair Shop, which Shropshire-based Jay has presented since it began in 2017, sees members of the public bring in much-loved items for restoration, his Yorkshire workshop is all about creating something from scratch.

members of the public nominate deserving local heroes from across Yorkshire to receive a bespoke, handmade piece of wooden furniture in recognition of the work they do for their community.

In one of the episodes an arbour is created for a care home in Doncaster to honour sta who moved in for 56 days during the first lockdown to look after residents. In another, a rocking horse is made for a Hull couple who have fostered 130 children. “It’s a really beautiful show,” says Jay. “There are some brilliant characters and the things

that they have done for the community have gone way above and beyond. The thing I love about the Yorkshire show compared with The Repair Shop is that you’re making an item from scratch and there is only one of that thing in the whole world.”

Having had almost six years of success on The Repair Shop, which is filmed in the middle of the South Downs in Sussex and now watched by over seven million people, Jay felt it was important to give people in the north some representation.

“I wanted to celebrate the uncelebrated,” he says of his decision to base his workshop in Yorkshire. “There are places in the UK that we don’t celebrate enough and it’s important to hear a di erent type of voice. What tends to happen is we focus a lot on the south and there is some real talent and some real community in the north – especially Yorkshire.”

from Bradford, Leeds and Huddersfield, who help make the items. “I wanted to find people who had done a bit already, knew their way around a workshop, but that had not necessarily done it with a camera in front of them,” he explains the process in finding his six apprentices. “I like to work with real people, real members of the community. I don’t want to work with anyone that’s too polished.”

Despite the north/south divide in terms of locality, what is similar about The Repair Shop and Jay’s Yorkshire Workshop is their ability to pull on the heart strings. Although

Jay, who received an MBE for his services to craft in May this year, doesn’t believe one story is more heart-warming than another.

“When you’ve got someone helping people out with a furniture bank, you’ve got someone doing stu for veterans, you’ve got people helping in care homes and then you’ve got a young boy who saved his dad’s life, how could you say one is better than the other?” he says. “If you can, I guarantee that you don’t have a heart.”

Jay himself is no stranger to adversity. He has spoken openly about his struggles with mental health and dyslexia, which went undiagnosed as a child meaning he didn’t learn to properly read or write until just last year – a challenge he documented for the BBC documentary, Learning to Read at 51.

“Only one person knew on [The Repair Shop] set and that was Kirsten [Ramsay],” he admits. “She used to help me by telling me about the emails that came through from the producers because she knew I wouldn’t have read them.

“I did that documentary to inspire people,” he adds, “to show them that you can make a di erence even if you have a vulnerability, whether that’s reading or mental health.”

It’s a belief that’s also reflected in his latest book, DIY with Jay, which aims to teach even those with the worst DIY track record how to tackle household jobs. From fixing a dripping tap and choosing the right wall plugs to making new sofa covers or building your own BBQ, it’s a foolproof guide to doing it yourself, interspersed with tales of Jay’s own DIY escapades.

“I want people to understand that fixing stu is quite simple and everybody starts somewhere,” Jay says. “All of the experts that you see at The Repair Shop were all beginners at some point. No-one is born an expert. Some of my first attempts were rubbish, but once you achieve something, something as simple as putting up a shelf or even a picture frame and it isn’t wonky, you can walk past it and feel happy.”

And with the cost of living rising, fixing up the things we have got is a challenge that, according to Jay, we should all be taking on wholeheartedly. “We’re going to need to watch the pennies and that means doing it yourself,” he adds. “There’s been that make do and mend culture in the past and all I’m doing with this book is giving you an advantage so you can give it a go yourself and save yourself a couple of quid.”

Q How long have you been acting for and when and where did your journey first begin?

A I’ve been acting since I was about four! I used to dress up constantly when I was little and I’d devise plays with my cousins and put them on for my mum and dad. I’d charge them to watch even though it was their house! When I was about 12, I joined a drama group with an agency attached, so I did a lot of supporting artist work on CBBC and BBC, before I went to SCALA in Leeds. At college, I studied acting.

Q You were studying drama at University in Falmouth when you had an accident. Can you tell us more about that and how it has shaped your life and career since?

A I was in my first term and it was 19 November 2015. I’d had a really long day at Uni and it was getting dark. There was a push bike coming down the hill, and I don’t think it was their fault, in fact, it was probably mine for being tired, but I stepped out in front of them and they hit me. I had a right-sided subdural hematoma which caused a stroke, and they rushed me to Truro Hospital before I was transferred to a specialist unit in Plymouth. My parents were called and asked how quickly they could get there and they were told they needed permission to operate and to get ready to say goodbye. I had to learn to eat, talk and walk again, but I got out of hospital on 16 January and went back to Uni the September following. I was still very much in recovery with speech therapy, occupational therapy, hydrotherapy and working on my concentration, but I didn’t want to give up.

I rushed myself to get back into acting, but I’ve always been so stubborn and I wanted to prove everyone wrong – and I suppose I did.

Q Tell us about your own show that you wrote and toured with this year, Subdural Hematoma…

A I had a module at Uni called Show in a Bag and it was meant to be a piece that you could take anywhere and perform at any time. I was challenged by one of my tutors to make

something funny, as I usually fell back on drama and tragedy. I wondered if I could turn my accident into a comedy piece, so I wrote a bit of spoken word, performed it in class and people were really laughing. I extended that and turned it into a 15-minute piece and it got an amazing reaction that I could never have dreamed of and got the highest mark at Uni. The Crucible in She eld were doing an open submissions programme so I turned it into a 60-minute piece, because I had the time in lockdown to do it, and it narrowly missed out at the end of the process, but I decided to take it to Manchester Fringe. It’s made up of my mum’s diary entries that she kept at the time, mixed with me responding in spoken word, with verbatim, physical theatre and testimonials from other brain injury survivors. I applied for Arts Council Funding and won, which meant I could take it on tour in March of this year.

Q You’re born and bred in She eld. Would you say it’s somewhere that’s very supportive to those in the performing arts?

A Oh, I’d definitely say so. I’m from a place called Chapeltown and the She eld theatre scene is just fantastic – it’s really supported me. I had a short residency with She eld

Theatres last year and I’ve been part of their script reading team and part of their Young Company for 2021 and 2022.

Q What are your favourite parts of the city?

A I love how green it is, it’s so beautiful.

I think it’s such a hub for Yorkshire, too. You go into the town centre and you’re just surrounded by all of these amazing theatres. I definitely look at it from an artist’s perspective now and I think the theatres are just incredible, they are so beautiful and real hidden gems of the city. It’s a really friendly city too, it makes you feel so at home.

Q Where do you like to hang out in She eld?

A The Washington is my favourite pub and I absolutely adore it there. I also love going out to eat at Bungalows and Bears and Temple of Fun. I’m coeliac and vegetarian and it has all the gluten free options, which is always really nice.

Q Do you have any favourite places to escape to in Yorkshire?

A I really love York. I think it’s such a beautiful city. But, I think it would have to be The Peaks – they are just so, so nice. I’ve started going wild swimming and I went to so many amazing spots in the summer.

There are also so many amazing hilltops for watching the sunset on too, it’s a really special place. I wrote a long piece of spoken word for BBC Uploads about the north called Mardy Bum and I think it says most of what I’m trying to say. She eld and the north is such an inspiring place to be. There are so many music legends from here and it’s definitely iconic for the arts.

Shibden Hall dates back to 1420 and o ers visitors a fascinating journey through the lives of the people who lived and worked here, including the noted diarist Anne Lister (1791-1840).

Shibden Hall’s architecture is a mix of styles reflecting its interesting and varied history. The adjacent 17th century aisled barn and workshops house a carriage collection and displays relating to di erent crafts, including a blacksmiths, coopers, wheelwrights and saddlers.

The Hall is surrounded by the beautifully restored gardens and estate that forms Shibden Park. There are a range of features and attractions, including a cafe and visitor facilities, miniature railway, boating lake, walking trails, play area, orienteering course and woodland in which to roam.

Shibden Hall is the focus of the BBC drama series written by Sally Wainwright, 'Gentleman Jack', exploring the life of Anne Lister and those who lived in the Hall and Estate. The first series aired in the UK on 19 May 2019.

Now to mark its 600th birthday, Bankfield Museum is hosting a special exhibition that will celebrate Shibden Hall and its many inhabitants. It features stunning images by renowned artists such as John Horner, as well as objects from throughout the hall’s history, including a personal letter from Anne Lister.

Why we love…

RIPON

The writer, Daniel Defoe, once famously said:

“Ripon is a very neat, pleasant, well built town, and has not only an agreeable situation on a rising ground between two rivers, but the market place is the finest and most beautiful that is to be seen of its kind in England.”

It might be the smallest city in Yorkshire and the third smallest in the country but, as Visit Harrogate so rightly puts it, “it’s a little city that packs a big punch”.

It’s often said that small places, particularly those surrounded by rural life, are brilliant for neighbours supporting neighbours, and the same can be said for Ripon – community spirit is central. The city has got it all, from picturesque and stunning streets, a famous racecourse, historic architecture and heritage sites on every turn of the corner, and community charm and character in droves.

You’ll find Michelin starred eateries, stately homes and gorgeous greenery, as well as wonderful waterways and ample opportunity for family fun.

STEEPED IN HISTORY

At just over 1,300-years-old, the cathedral city is historically part of the old West Riding of Yorkshire, but now falls within the popular and a uent Borough of Harrogate. Despite its fairly young age as a city, though, the cathedral means that people have been coming to pilgrimage and pray in Ripon for many, many years. With some of the oldest stone churches in the country, you can witness thousands of years of historic, impressive craftsmanship of faith beliefs in wood and stone.

Moving on from enjoying years of prosperity while it was known as a place of significant religious importance in

Great Britain, the city went on to see huge success in the wool and cloth industry –third in size to its nearby York and Halifax neighbours. Naturally, Ripon became more well known as an a uent and popular city, and its impressive production of spurs throughout the 16th and 17th centuries meant that it was largely una ected by the downfalls of the Industrial Revolution. Essentially, Ripon has always managed to come out somewhat on top.

Racecourse has also added a sense of pomp and circumstance to the a uent and successful city, with royalty considering it one of the finest racecourses in the country. Often referred to as Yorkshire’s garden racecourse, this beautiful flat racecourse, with a right leaning oval, is a premium location for racing in the North of England. In 1773, the famous racecourse even hosted the first ever horse race for female jockeys. One of the things that really sets Ripon apart from the rest is that it is steeped in not only beautifully visible history and awe, but also in wonderful longstanding traditions, too. You’ll find that Ripon still has an ancient Hornblower, who you can find blowing his horn at the four corners of the Market Square, every single night at 9pm. In fact, it’s an unbroken ceremony that has been happening daily for 1,128 years. Doing this at the four corners of the obelisk is said to “set the watch”, and the horn has since become

a symbol of the city, a unique talisman representing good governance and of course tradition. The Wakeman of Ripon dresses in a uniform with a tricorn hat and blows three blasts of his famous horn – the current horn is said to be the fourth to have been used.

HERITAGE AND HOSPITALITY

For tourists visiting the city, there’s an abundance of heritage sites to visit and a brilliant community of hospitality providers to accompany the fruitful history, too. What’s great with it being a small city is that it is, of course, very walkable. The cathedral, consecrated by St Wilfrid in 672AD, is well worth a visit. PLENTY TO SEE AND DO

Given Ripon has so much tradition and history, it’s unsurprising that there are three museums to visit, known collectively as the Yorkshire Law and Order museums. All are centrally located and full of historical treasures and information which help weave the story of the city and its days gone by. Head next to the Prison and Police Museum on Marygate, a place that brings to life the history of policing in the county. IT’S A WRAP – DEBUTS, HOMECOMINGS AND HIGHLIGHTS FROM YORK FASHION WEEK

Amajor festival of fashion took over York with an exciting line-up of more than 20 events spanning five days from 6–10 October. York Fashion Week brought together over 150 creatives, designers, stylists and makeup artists, models, behind the scenes volunteers, as well as around 500 guests to celebrate all things fashion and champion emerging talent.

At the Student and Graduate Runway Show, aspiring fashion creatives from the University of Huddersfield, York College, East Riding College and Leeds Art University showcased their latest collections. Alpine Venturer by Huddersfield University graduate, Emily Oakes, debuted with her range of reversible gilets and pu er jackets inspired by the documentary ‘The Dawn Wall’. The show closed with the collection Women on View from Leeds Art University Graduate, Jade Hong Tran. Jade’s visionary designs focus on portraying social issues through fashion, combining tailoring with draping and fabrics with contrasting textures that bring disruption to traditional silhouettes.

The Indie Runway Show unveiled the latest capsule collections featuring inspirational cutting edge designs from independent brands based across the UK who are pushing boundaries within the world of fashion.

Returning to York Fashion Week for the second time, after launching her collection at the spring/summer show earlier this year, was Meg Lara Atelier with ‘Spellbound’, celebrating transformation and powerfully reclaims the term ‘witch’ that historically

was used to describe women who defy social boundaries. While Iphigenia brought her collection – Ammos – which displays her love and passion for her Greek heritage through her work celebrating the culture with a range of spring summer resort wear combined with business attire.

The talented London-based designer and West End costumer maker, Shoni, who staged a ‘meet the designer workshop’ for students at the last event, unveiled her debut haute couture-inspired collection – ‘the art of Queening’ – to critical acclaim. Her collection is an exploration of influential historical female figures and women’s issues both past and present. Introducing theatrical costume to the runway was a show stopper and she later closed York Fashion Week with an exclusive exhibit at York’s luxurious private house hotel – The Vices York.

ADDITIONAL RUNWAY SHOWS INCLUDED:

• The Sustainable Style Swap where guests were invited to bring along five unwanted items to exchange in a bid to bring a new lease of life to pre-loved clothes and update their wardrobes sustainably with expert advice from stylists Laura Fawcett and Sara Anson.

• Warpaint – Fashion for the Fight, which debuted earlier this year, returned to announce its exciting rebrand – And Able – and unveil its latest line of clothing, designed specifically for people with life-altering illnesses. The new collection includes comfortable yet stylish pieces that have been subtly adapted and can be worn by patients during medical procedures.

• Revival Runway – following a sell-out event in spring, this runway show celebrated renewed fashion and presented creative brands that champion sustainable style and fashion with a clothing range constructed from abandoned tents by Ketchup Clothes.

• French 75 – for the first time, this vintage online boutique brought a touch of Parisian glamour to York Fashion Week, with pre-loved pieces from Lanvin, Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior.

Highly acclaimed makeup artist, Sonia Schofield, is a veteran of York Fashion Week having taken the lead as Director for the last five years. Working for YFW has catapulted her career from in-store consultant for a cosmetics brand and bridal makeup artist to being listed as one of the top 22 makeup artists in 2022 in Harpers Bazaar. She has also gained commissions for London Fashion Week as well as numerous TV productions and her work has appeared in Vogue and on the front covers of a number of glossy magazines.

Sonia says: “If it hadn’t been for York Fashion Week, I wouldn’t be where I am today. It’s given me the confidence to stride out, explore new avenues and experience really exciting opportunities. It’s taken my business in a whole

new direction. It’s been a pleasure to be involved with York Fashion Week once again and it was an honour to share my experience with students who are keen to branch out themselves in such a fast paced industry.”

The countdown is now on… Christmas is fast approaching and the Wakefield district’s festive stocking is already full to the brim with events for all.

The season kicks o with Light Up, a seasonal extravaganza taking place from 16-27 November in locations across the district. Watch distinctive buildings come alive with light and colour, pick up the perfect present at one of the festive markets, or take part in family entertainment. The centrepiece of the festival is Futures, by Lucid Creates, a stunning installation in Wakefield and Pontefract Castle. Using steel, LEDs and mirrors, Futures leads visitors along a 50m walkway of optical illusions, moving light

and mesmerising sound to transport them to a positive view of the future. Alongside Futures, Wakefield will welcome a whole trail of light artworks that will invite visitors to experience the city centre in a whole new light from 18-20 November. Find out more at expwake.co/LightUp. It wouldn’t be Christmas without Santa, and in addition to the places you’d expect to find the jolly old man, the Wakefield district has a few quirky options too. Pontefract Museum’s famous Liquorice Santa returns with his sweet-themed grotto on 10 December. Meanwhile Green Christmas lets children visit Father Christmas in his cosy home at Wakefield Museum – join him on 17 December to discuss ways to make this year’s festivities more eco-friendly. The National Coal Mining Museum’s Santa Underground (26 November-24 December) is a truly unique Santa – his magical grotto is 140 metres below the surface!

Another Christmas must-have is Theatre Royal Wakefield’s legendary pantomime. This year, it’s Dick Whittington. Visitors join intrepid hero Dick and his furry sidekick Tommy as they set o on the adventure of a lifetime, travelling from rat-infested London Town to the mysterious island of Ponty Carlo (24 November-31 December).

Another city centre treat is Wakefield BID’s Winter Wonderland. On 3 and 4 December, an enchanted snow maze comes to Wakefield city centre, covered in magical snow and lights. Nutcracker elves and festive characters weave a magical interactive story inside the maze to help visitors find hidden treats and clues to solve the Mystery of the Missing Santa. Outside the maze will be an enchanted forest entrance, including a 25ft tree with picnic benches and a selfie swing dressed in foliage and lights – creating a fantastic backdrop for those perfect Christmas pics.

Sculpture Park’s Twilight Walk: Winter Pleasure Grounds on 10 December. Join an atmospheric winter walk and talk around YSP’s historic lakes and woodland to discover interesting follies and features by candlelight, then finish your tour with a warm winter drink.

While you’re at the Sculpture Park, take in their latest exhibitions. Lakwena Maciver: A green and pleasant land (HA-HA) is a new collection of works featuring bright colours and bold text, drawing parallels between the way the park’s 18th century ha-has control access to the land, and how modern-day elitism controls access to public space.

Now from a feast for the eyes to a treat for the ears: the Wakefield district is also host to several special concerts this festive season. Wakefield Cathedral’s flagship concert, Carols by Candlelight, returns on 16 and 22 December. The Cathedral Choir will get you into the Christmas spirit with a splendid evening of carols in the candlelit cathedral. Meanwhile, in an altogether more intimate setting, Theatre Royal Wakefield presents Chantry Carols, taking place in the diminutive but beautiful Chantry Chapel on 20 and 21 December. Expect an evening of

traditional carols and Christmas music from mediaeval staples to modern-day favourites with the choir from St. Austin’s.

Finally, you can start your Christmas shopping early and support independent makers when The Hepworth Wakefield’s popular Festive Market returns across two weekends (26-27 November and 3-4 December). With over 60 stalls selling ceramics, homeware, prints, textiles, stationery, food and drink, you’re sure to find fantastic, handmade gifts for your loved ones.

If all this has inspired your creativity, there are plenty of seasonal workshops to develop your crafting skills. Yorkshire Sculpture Park invites you to make your own colourful Festive Tree Decorations to hang on the tree (4 December), while The Hepworth Wakefield is hosting a Contemporary Winter Wreath workshop on 9 December, so you can create a luxury festive wreath with the help of Zosia Berkieta-Lewis, from botanical studio and shop The Plant Room. The Art House is also holding a Ceramic Christmas Tree workshop on 3 December where you can create and decorate a miniature slotted tree, before it gets fired in the Art House kiln.

The times they are changing. In my spare time, I coach an amateur football team, full of young and enthusiastic players which remind me of myself 25 odd years ago. One big di erence is pretty evident, however: the youngsters of today have little or no interest in alcohol, a complete reversal to how it was in my early days of playing adult football (what I can remember about it, anyway).

But it’s not just the youth of today. The older generation, too, are shunning alcohol more and more, which is why innovative companies like Bax Botanics are causing such a stir. Created by husband and wife team, Rose and Chris Bax, the two have spent decades learning about and experimenting with botanical flavours. Between them they have over 30 years’

experience of teaching and consulting to the food industry, focussing on delicious and exciting ways to use wild ingredients and culinary herbs. They are now using all their skills and experience to distil a secret recipe of herbs, roots, berries and flowers to create non-alcoholic spirits and cocktails with layers of beautifully complex flavours.

For Rose, who Absolutely Yorkshire is catching up with post a well-deserved holiday, her interest in natural ingredients started even earlier. “I have known about plants since being a small girl,” she smiles. “Out in the countryside I would teach Chris, who was a chef, about the wild plants. One day he asked me if they were edible and this opened up a whole lot of learning that culminated in our first business together, Taste the Wild. Here we loved inspiring people with recipes that would get them outside and interacting with nature. The sustainable foraging we taught was great fun and we created recipes with all sorts of wild botanicals.”

Behind the scenes, however, something else was brewing. “After teaching people how to identify and use wild flavours for a dozen or more years, we were thinking about bringing a product to market, but we couldn’t see a way that large scale production could tread lightly on the natural world,” Rose explains. “Then we discovered a great supplier of Organic Fair-trade botanicals that were ethical and sustainable. This brought us the opportunity to swap out wild ingredients for pure, kind, farmed ones. The very first alcohol-free

spirit recipes used wild ingredients from our own small wood, but when we realised how much people liked them we looked at swapping the ingredients.”

This also sparked the idea that would eventually lead to Bax Botanics, but how much work went into actually getting to the point of launch? “Oh a lot!” Rose laughs. “We were not from a drinks background and had a steep learning curve. The recipes were based on years of learning, so were not too hard to create, but large-scale distilling and all the other

things to set up were seriously hard work.”

Bax Botanics launched with their Verbena and Sea Buckthorn creation in January 2019. “Some people thought alcohol-free generally was a weird idea,” Rose admits, “but others like Booths supermarket and The Botanist chain of bars loved the drinks and took them within a couple of months of our launch.” It was the launchpad for further growth, with production capacity being upped three times during the various lockdowns.

“Company growth has been very steady and we are happy, especially considering the di culties of the last few years,” Rose says.

Their distillery is located just outside of Wetherby and is a real hive of activity. “We live a few miles north in the countryside near Boroughbridge,” Rose points out. “We

love the walks we can take from the house, the flowers and the plants in the garden.”

Does the local area inspire new creations? Rose pauses for a moment, before saying: “I think about what I would like to drink at a certain occasion, and then think which flavours would match the feeling I want the drinker to have… Does that make sense?”

Whether it does or not, Bax Botanics’ combination of herbs, berries, roots and botanicals have proved to be a real hit. “I think the flavours are so satisfying, they make a real alternative to alcohol,” Rose considers why they have been so successful. “People like the fact they don’t need to be stored in the fridge and can be used exactly like a spirit, mixed with tonic or other mixers.”

They have garnered a lot of awards recognition as well. “That’s brilliant,” Rose smiles. “Our Great Taste Award in 2019 was so good, and then to receive a Global Good Award too a year later was just awesome. These awards give the brand great credibility from professionals.”

Looking ahead, Rose says the future is about growing “the business sustainably, creating jobs and ultimately helping people to enjoy drinking without alcohol”. Maybe even the youngsters in my football team will be convinced it’s worth staying out for a drink after a game this festive season.

INGREDIENTS

• Breton lobster

• Yellow, pink and red beetroot

• Beetroot curry

• Beetroot sorbet

• Lime

• Sumac

• Espelette pepper

PREPARATION

1 Boil the lobster in a court-bouillon for four minutes. Shell the lobster and cut it into thin pieces.

2 On a plate, alternate cuts of lobster with slices of raw beetroot until a beautiful circle has been made.

3 Dress with olive oil and lime zest, then season with fleur de sel, sumac and Espelette pepper.

4 Add a little beetroot curry and a quenelle of beetroot sorbet at the centre.

• Red cabbage

• Avocado

• Coriander

PREPARATION

1 Blend a red cabbage. In the blender, mix the red cabbage juice with a tablespoon of mayonnaise, a tablespoon of red wine vinegar and gluten-free whole wheat bread.

2 Prepare the guacamole by crushing a ripe avocado with a fork. Add olive oil, lime juice, and fresh, finely cut coriander. Season.

3 Garnish the bottom of the plate with guacamole. On top, add Frisée salad, pomegranate seeds, slices of radish and chopped coriander.

4 Pour the gazpacho all around the plate.

1 Colour the lamb shanks in a frying pan, then slow-cook in an oven with lamb broth, spices and citrus zest.

Q What is the background to Crew Clothing?

A Crew was founded by professional skier, Alastair Parker-Swift, over 25 years ago. When he wasn’t competing for England, Alastair ran a successful windsurfing school in Salcombe. It was here that Crew was born.

Q How has the brand evolved over the last 25 years plus?

A Alastair’s first collection consisted of the rugby shirt, detailed with our iconic ‘93 patch. He took it from Salcombe, to Cowes Week, to the King’s Road. Over 100 stores later and the rest is history. We now have stores nationwide – including a brand-new flagship in Exeter – so we might have expanded all around the country, but we’ve never forgotten where we came from. We’re also consistently inspired by our roots. From ski teams to rugby shirts and crossed oars, sport has been integral to the brand since day one. Today we’re partnered with six high profile British sporting events, teams and organisations such as Henley Royal Regatta, Williams Racing and Exeter Chiefs to name a few.

As Wakefield rugby star Jodie Ounsley signs to Exeter Chiefs, we chat through her dream of raising awareness of deafness and disability, and her inspirational journey to where she is today

Adetermined Yorkshire lass through and through, it’s clear that England rugby star Jodie Ounsley has been destined for an illustrious career in sport from a young age. The Wakefield-born rugby player has played for England Sevens Rugby and recently signed with premiership club Exeter Chiefs.

But Jodie isn’t any old sportsperson either, as she explains where it all started for her. “I suppose it started when I was born profoundly deaf, which means essentially no hearing at all in both ears. My mum and dad were made aware of cochlear implants, so I had one at 14 months old and then went on a long journey of rehab and speech therapy sessions,” says Jodie. “I went to mainstream school where I struggled quite a bit as the only deaf person. I think that’s why I turned to sport and got stuck in all the time. I was that girl who took PE so seriously and if we were having a bit of fun, I’d treat it as if it were the Olympics!”

Really, though, Jodie and her family would credit the marvellously titled World Coal Carrying Championships as the thing that gave her the sporting bug.

The unique Yorkshire event is something that her family get involved in every year, including Jodie, who won at the ripe age of three (despite needing to be five o cially). The aim of the race is to run a mile with a sack of coal on your shoulders, from the pub to the maypole.

Defying the odds and doing so with vigor is something that clearly comes naturally to Jodie. “It was a challenge from the start, but I suppose the real challenges started when I got serious about sport,” she explains.

“Rugby came into my life when I was around 15, but if you have a cochlear implant, medical and doctors always say you can’t play contact sports. I didn’t want to accept it, though, so my family looked at ways I could play without going against medical advice. We looked into all di erent safety measures and came across the scrum cap, and decided to give it a go. I look like an egg, I look awful in it, but if I can play, I can play.”

From the very start of getting onto the pitch, it was evident that Jodie had serious talent and scouts had her playing big games before she even understood the

rules. Fast forward to today and Jodie has been through England Under 18s, Yorkshire County and getting her first professional contract when she was 18 before landing at Exeter Chiefs this year. “I’ve always wanted to be a professional athlete,” she beams. “It’s amazing that the woman’s game has changed so much and that I can now have this as my full-time job.”

And for Jodie, having a platform as a professional sportsperson means the world to her both on a personal level and due to being able to use the platform for raising awareness, too. “At the start, I didn’t realise how much of an opportunity it was for this. I’m a shy person and all the way through school, I didn’t speak about my deafness as I didn’t want to be a burden to people. But when I got into the professional environment, it forced me to speak to people. Obviously, it’s a team sport and communication is the biggest part of the game. I realised how privileged I was to be a professional sportsperson and be able to spread awareness – I really take pride in it now and want to make a di erence.”

If you haven’t already sensed it, Jodie is incredibly humble and modest. “I don’t count myself as a role model, but I do want

to help,” she says. “I want to be able to allow people to be more open-minded and realise that people with disabilities and people who are deaf can achieve in professional sport. We have to adapt and it can be a challenge, but it’s possible. I want the young deaf kids to look up and realise that they can do it too, because they really can!”

On top of her rugby career, Jodie has also founded the platform, Not Just Anyone, which aims to help people realise they can overcome adversity. “Since I opened up about my story, I realised how much of an impact it’s had on myself and the confidence it’s given me to embrace my deafness,” she says. “I wanted to create a platform where people could do the same, share their story in life and inspire each other. It’s really powerful to share experiences and find somewhere you can relate to something. Once I’m not as busy with rugby, I want to take it to a bigger scale.”

As we chat through her big move from Wakefield to Devon, what would Jodie say she loves the most about her home county? “Well, it would have to be the Coal Race, wouldn’t it?!” she laughs. “It’s just such a friendly, familyfilled, funny Yorkshire event!”

MAKE A PLEDGE

Are you taking the Veg Pledge this month? You may or may not know that Veg Pledge is an initiative founded by Cancer Research UK to invite you to ditch meat for a month. Not only is it a way to help raise funds for the charity, but also to educate and remind us of the importance of vegetables and fruit for our health, as well as helping the environment.

Whilst some of you reading this will already have vegetarian or vegan diets, some families may be interested in taking part in Veg Pledge. For others, it may not

be suitable or recommended – or it may not be something with which you wish to participate. Whichever group you and your family might fall into, it is a good reminder of how important it is for our children to enjoy not only eating vegetables, but also to be involved in growing and cooking them – and, indeed, taking part in family mealtimes.

Children love to see things grow. Most families will have had experience of their small children growing cress seeds on cotton wool or blotting paper and seeing how quickly it grows. Even three-year-olds can harvest their crop of cress and eat the results of their labours in a sandwich.

As children grow older, why not provide a small patch in the garden, a window box or even an old bucket and let them buy a few packets of vegetable seeds. Such a seemingly simple task can bring joy, reward and also a sense of responsibility. If you don’t look after your seedlings or forget to water them, you quickly learn what happens! A couple of Christmases ago, I was given a wonderful surprise present of a beautiful wooden herb “theatre”, three tiered shelves with accompanying pots on which to grow herbs. I also shared the childlike joy of looking after my array of herbs and, sadly, learned what happens if you forget them for a few days.

If you want to bypass the growing phase, another idea is to go to the supermarket with your children and find a new and interesting vegetable each week. When our youngest child was little, that is exactly what we did. It is amazing how many weird, wonderful and interesting fruits and vegetables lurk in supermarket racks that often go unnoticed – some were delicious, some not so delicious – and for others, we had to research how to cook them. It was a short, but fun phase and we both learned about all sorts of unusual fruit and vegetables.

And then, of course, comes the cooking and the eating. If you can find time, even occasionally, to involve your young children in helping to prepare a meal (or, as they get older, cook an entire meal for the family), it is surprisingly rewarding – and educational – for all involved.

As we all know, eating together as a family, whatever the age of our children, is an important time together. Even though they are all grown up now, our increasingly rare, family dinners are a highlight for us all. There isn’t a parent on the planet who doesn’t worry at some point if their child is on track. Milestones are monitored and alarm bells ring when other children appear to have key skills your child is struggling with. Children do, of course, develop at di erent paces. But on top of existing concerns about the impact of screen use in early years, now we have two years of intermittent lockdowns to contend with. This is raising concerns among experts as well as parents about speech, language and communication skills – especially for our youngest learners. Trips on the bus, exposure to family members and visits to play settings all help children acquire language. It’s not just speaking that matters, but understanding what others say.

Speech therapist Amy Loxley, a Lead Speech & Language Advisor for the children’s communication charity I CAN, believes lockdown deprived children of many of the usual routes for developing communication. “Even that requirement to stay close to home and have limited contact with others has deprived children of a range of social experiences,” she says. “This is the range of experiences you have in early life where you’re exposed to new words.”

Parents often wonder if their child’s development is on track, but one of the most problematic areas is speech and language. We find out about sources of support

There’s now some evidence to support the idea that this has led to an increase in speech and language issues. “I CAN undertook some research last year, published in a report called ‘Speaking up for the COVID generation’. We found in that research that there are 1.5m children in the UK who are at risk of not being able to speak and understand language at an age-appropriate level,” says Amy Loxley. Certainly, referrals for communication di culties have increased – noted by both the Department for Education and speech therapists.

I CAN develops intervention programmes used in mainstream schools, as well as running two specialist schools for children with complex language di culties. A lot of their work with mainstream schools centres on Developmental Language Delay (DLD). This is a condition unconnected with any other conditions that can cause lifelong issues speaking and understanding others. “It a ects 7.6% of children – another way of looking at that is two in every class of 30 – so is actually quite common,” says Amy Loxley.

The other key group that I CAN works with is children who have language di culties due to environmental factors – in other words, the setting they are in. This group is much larger

in areas of disadvantage. “One in ten children across the UK has a di culty with speech and language, but that can rise to one in four in areas of disadvantage,” says Amy Loxley.

WARNING SIGNS

One of the big questions for parents is: do I need to seek help? While no one wants a label on their child, the fundamental building blocks need to be in place. “Language skills underly all skills, so even when children learn to read and write, that’s based on them understanding and using spoken language,” says Amy Loxley. I CAN runs a free phone advice service where parents can talk to a speech and language therapist. Typically, parents ring for advice because they have noticed that their child uses less words or simpler words and sentences than their peers. It could be that a child’s speech sounds jumbled or muddled up, so that it’s hard to understand.

Less commonly, parents may recognise their child is having trouble understanding what is said to them – often this isn’t spotted so early. It might be trouble following an instruction, for instance, or a teacher reporting that the child doesn’t listen in class or isn’t getting work done when asked. The issue here can become complicated by how adults view this

failure to do what’s asked. “Sometimes that’s interpreted as something else – people think it’s a behaviour problem, when it’s actually the child not understanding language.”

GETTING SUPPORT

If parents are worried and believe they may need expert support, the team at I CAN can explain the steps for getting a speech therapy referral via the NHS or privately. Usually, the first recommended step is approaches to try at home. They include going a bit slower when you are talking and making comments rather than asking questions – a technique to open up dialogue without putting undue pressure on a child. As to screen time – that other great worry – expert guidance suggests that the less children have in early years the better. TV (or other device) is never a substitute for the learning provided by good old-fashioned play and interaction. That said, children love screen time, and so watching an ageappropriate programme with your child and discussing what’s going on with them is a way to make this an active experience that builds communication skills.

The other great route that helps children get into speaking and understanding language is books, using the same sharing approach. “Relate things in the book back to their experiences – it’s all about drawing those connections for your child.”

As Harrogate-based Doma Architects find themselves an inspiration to others, we chat all things design, progression and creating homes from dreams

Over the last few years, Yorkshire has really been making a name for itself in the world of architecture and design, particularly in the domestic market. Gone are the days that people only think about standard barn conversions or simple

extensions in the county, and instead, Yorkshire is becoming something of a shining star in architecture, with award-winning design companies, incredible projects making the headlines and all sorts of exciting developments taking place. One design business that is leading the way with this is Harrogate-based architects Doma Architects, founded by Ruth Donnelly.

As I sit and chat with Ruth, it sounds as though a fascination for design has been inbuilt in her from a young age. In fact, she laughs as she tells me that it actually all started from playing with Lego when she was a child. “This was back in the day when Lego was literally bricks and you had to be quite inventive with it,” she smiles. “I’ve always loved tech, science and design.”

Ruth tells me how she went on to train in both Newcastle and Edinburgh, before settling back in Yorkshire. When the recession hit, she and her husband

decided to move to Sydney and escape the UK where they both worked as architects and built up a lot of experience. In 2010 when they returned, instead of working for someone else, they decided to give it a go working for themselves.

“There’s something that really draws you back to Yorkshire. We formed Doma Architects in 2010 and haven’t looked back, really,” smiles Ruth. “We started it because one of our friends had worked with architects in the past and they found the whole process quite confusing, frustrating and found that people didn’t really listen, so we wanted to change that. For me, a great project is reliant on a great partnership between an architect and a client – we design for people. It’s all about listening, particularly on domestic projects, because you have to understand them, their homes and how they live. At the end of the project, if I’ve got a happy client, that’s all that matters.”

The ethos of the practice has always been about helping people to understand and see the true potential of their homes, and to then help them with the process. Ruth has always wanted to speak client language, something that she doesn’t necessarily feel has always happened in the architecture sphere. Instead, it’s about stripping everything back and not seeming inaccessible. Clearly, Ruth has been doing something right for the last 12 years, despite being incredibly modest about her successes. But if one thing works to showcase quite how highly regarded Doma Architects has become in the design and architecture world both in Yorkshire, but also nationwide, it’s their inclusion in recent co ee table book, 21st Century Houses: RIBA Award Winning Homes by Dominic Bradbury and published by RIBA. It is described by the author as a book whereby “the winning houses, featured here, showcase truly innovative design, contemporary materials and

techniques, and inspired responses to historical and urban settings, as well as areas of natural beauty.” I wonder what it means to Ruth to be included within the book, but also to be thought of as an inspiration to so many others. “Oh gosh, I couldn’t quite believe it when the book arrived and I was incredibly honoured to be featured as it says in the book ‘some of the best awardwinning homes over the last ten years’,” she smiles. “It’s quite incredible, to be honest. To be amongst so many other well-regarded architects is a huge honour. It was actually one of my first projects with Doma Architects that was featured!”

So, what’s Doma Architects got going on at the moment? “I returned from maternity leave with number three in February, so all the projects we’ve got on are at quite early stages, so it’s really exciting,” says Ruth. “We’ve got planning through for quite a complicated site in York in a conservation area, which works with the existing, but has a contemporary twist.” When it comes to new trends, Ruth tells me how sustainability is clearly on the agenda, particularly with the energy crisis. “There will be a lot of sustainable materials coming through,” says Ruth. “People are really actively asking for it now, as well as the use of local materials, instead of importing from overseas.”

Ruth is clearly excited by the aforementioned progress in the design world in Yorkshire, and loves how up and coming it is, as well as how diverse it has become. With the Yorkshire landscape so varied, she tells me how much variety there can be in design in the county and people don’t need to stick to one formula. In fact, contemporary design can really complement the traditional and rural surroundings, instead of oppose it. “The surroundings of Yorkshire are inspiring, of course. I’ve got a project in Boston Spa at the moment that responds to the industrial heritage of agricultural buildings and we use the gable form quite a lot in projects,” says Ruth. “Yorkshire is so diverse in its landscape, history and building. There’s been a bit of a shift here, and people are becoming more interested in design and it’s becoming more of a talking point.”

Tell us about the property’s history… Northgate Mount was fortunate enough to be visited by his majesty King George V and her majesty Queen Mary in July 1912. I’ve been a full-time photographer since August 1999. My first full time job in photography was on-board cruise ships, Princess Cruises, NCL and WindStar Sailing ships. After four and a half years at sea travelling the world I returned to the UK and set up my business in September 2003, so I am fast approaching 20 years.

Q Most memorable moments as a photographer at sea…

• Sitting next to Buzz Aldren on a little tender boat as we were both disembarking in Panama.

• Hanging out of a helicopter over the Panama Canal photographing the ship and the surrounding area where we saw indigenous tribes washing their clothes in the river.

• Photographing an elderly couple completely naked, covered in tattoos and

piercings on a beach in Bora-Bora at the end of a two week naturist cruise where ALL the passengers were naked for two weeks. I kept my clothes on, but opened an extra button on my polo shirt!

Q Dream jobs overseas…

Photographing yoga retreats overseas, combining my three favourite passions: yoga, travel and photography. Oh and delicious food too! I have photographed retreats in the mountains in Mallorca and Southern Turkey, and most recently a yoga retreat onboard a Turkish sailing boat for Yorkshire’s own Turkish born entrepreneur, Ebru Evrim.

Projects I have covered include luxury retirement villages, city centre hotels, courthouses, o ces and co-working spaces.

My most recent shoot for them was down in London in the first heatwave this summer, 31 degrees trekking around the city with all my gear. Wow! Our first stop was Astrazeneca near Kings Cross, we had strict instructions to bring minimal kit, no lights, just a tripod and to work as quickly as possible covering a few floors of reception areas, o ces, kitchens, dining space, booths, meeting rooms etc… It was an impressive site let me tell you!

The following day I had two sites to photograph, firstly the most amazing co-working space I have ever seen. LABS Victoria – if you are working in the city I highly recommend it. The photograph on the previous page show one of the areas with the most unusual structure hanging above the curved booths (all designed, made and installed by J Carey) and meeting areas – it was just incredible to be in this space.

The last stop was Gresham Street, a brand-new slick o ce and retail space not yet occupied. We worked our way around the reception areas, o ces, the bar area and the changing rooms in the gym.

I came across the Instagram account

@The_Girl_with_the_Green_Sofa a few years ago after another client at Alpine Lifestyle Boutique mentioned her to me. I am a big fan of all things green and when I saw the sofa I was in love! Seeing it framed by bold patterned wallpaper, beautiful artwork, quirky decorative sculptures and house plants, scattered with textured cushions, it looked divine.

I remember the moment the call came in, I was on a lunch break on a job in Essex when Metro called and asked if I was available to shoot The Girl with the Green Sofa’s home.

I nearly choked on my sushi! I was so giddy and delighted I felt like all my birthdays had come at once. My diary was full for the next few weeks, but I knew I HAD to make it work, so I cancelled my weekend plans to spend my Saturday surrounding myself with creative energy and awesomeness.

I was in heaven! Nicola was so lovely and her son was my little assistant for the day too, it was great fun. The photographs were used for a generous spread in the property section of Metro.

Walking into Sally's home was a feast for my eyes everywhere I looked. I could have spent a whole week photographing all the rooms, hallways, outdoor space and the interesting, unusual and well curated decorative homewares.

It wasn’t long before Sally invited me back for round two, an interiors shoot and a few shots of her wearing dreamy dresses in her home and outdoor space. We have since had another couple of shoots with more fabulous frocks and have discussed some interesting collaborations and have plans brewing

Sam is the founder of the hugely successful online emporium Lime Lace. After completing a full house refurb, featuring a few of Sam’s favourite wallpapers, a collection of awesome art and statement pieces from Lime Lace, you can imagine her home is pretty damn impressive.

The first shoot involved interiors and personal branding, Sam’s home, photos of Sam (with precious new pooch) and also her glamorous team. Sam wanted photographs to show her interior design, creative styling and showcase her range of products in a home setting.

party and anyone who knows Sam, knows the girl loves to party! A full outdoor kitchen, lounging and entertaining area complete with sofas, lamps, and one of those fancy fire pits. I photographed the garden in bright sunshine and then popped back up to photograph it at dusk to show all the lamps and festoon lighting. An absolutely stunning space. The Secret Drawer design and hand make beautiful bespoke furniture and interiors of the highest quality. My first job with The Secret Drawer was to photograph the showroom in Ilkley, which was booked through and part funded by Ilkley BID.

This was in fact a little ‘test’ to see the quality of my work and whether they would like to use me going forward to photograph projects in their client’s homes…Thankfully I passed and have since photographed dozens of absolutely beautiful projects across Yorkshire. Kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, gin bars, wine cellars, family rooms, boot rooms and more.

Why did I choose this project to feature here? It shows a most impressive entrance, with a coat and shoe storage cupboard, a padded seat with built in storage and a huge family friendly kitchen with named drawers and a larder cupboard… oh and a slide, but I have to say that quietly as the slide wasn’t installed by The Secret Drawer. secret-drawer.co.uk

One of the key things that Kathryn helped with initially was producing a model of the new room showing all of the furniture items that Jon and Clare wanted to have in there. From this they decided to change their building plans and to increase the square meterage of the room.

At the time that Jon and Clare Metcalfe were planning an extension to their home, they were drawn into the Furnish & Fettle showroom in Pocklington by the impressive light hanging in the window. They were greeted by owner Glyn Goddard and they started to chat about that they were planning to undertake, and were advised by Glyn to book an appointment to discuss the plans with one of the designers as soon as possible, even though at this stage the build was scheduled for nearly a year in the future.

“We arranged to meet [designer] Kathryn and explained that we were looking for support and ideas for our proposed garden room,” says Clare. “Kathryn was really friendly and easy to talk to and she took the time to understand us and our vision

“Attention to detail was prevalent at all times, but none more so than when organising our made to measure sofas,” says Clare. “Kathryn was able to provide really useful insights into size, shape and materials, and guided us with the end result being two fabulous his and hers sofas.”

When it came to choosing paint colours, Kathryn was able to draw on her experience to ensure that the correct choices were made. “Prussian Blue from Zo any was an inspired choice,” says Clare, “and Kathryn also gave us confidence to use the colour across not only the walls, but paint work and ceilings too.

“Our overall experience with Furnish & Fettle in Pocklington has been positive, friendly and helpful, providing us with a room that we love and enjoy living in everyday,” Clare finishes.

The kitchen is the hardest working room and the focal point for most houses. That’s what makes it so important to get its design right first time – it’s not exactly a room where you can easily move the furniture around for a little ‘refresh’.

Browson Design & Build helps homes across Yorkshire (and often London too) with the daunting task of kitchen design. Not only that, but they handcraft all cabinetry within their workshop on the outskirts of Richmond, North Yorkshire.

Set on a beautiful working farm, Browson Design & Build is a family-run company. Managing Director, Sam Bainbridge, lives on site with his wife Claire (the company’s Marketing Manager) and their two young children. The farm is run by Sam’s father and has been in his family for generations.

As Sam’s bespoke joinery business began to grow, he started converting outbuildings and sheds into a workshop and spray booth. In more recent years, the company introduced an appointmentonly showroom where clients can explore the design and quality of workmanship.

Along with Sam and Claire, the Browson team comprises of skilled carpenters Andrew Vasey and Daniel Bowler, as well as Sam’s brother, Tarn, who takes care of all cabinetry paintwork. It might be a very small business, but it has a great reputation.

Everything they make is custom-built and crafted from the finest quality materials to suit their clients’ budgets. Their work is a ordable for a bespoke design service. There’s no standard style or set template.

Browson Design & Build have worked on a huge range of projects from Victorian terraced houses, new builds, converted barns to Grade II listed manor houses, with their work published in national magazines and newspapers. It’s certainly worth mentioning that they don’t just specialise in kitchens, but in the designing, making and installing of luxury wardrobes and one-o pieces of furniture too.

Their success is hugely down to positive recommendations. Word of the company has spread as far as London where the Browson team were commissioned to create a display kitchen for Soho Home’s Carnaby Street showroom as well as handmade kitchens, wardrobes and furniture for actors including Jenna Coleman, Bel Powley and Douglas Booth.
