Community Bonds
Revival of The Basin Triangle Assisted by Renewed Community Centres The "Basin Triangle" intersection is located in service and commercial centre of "The Basin Town". It not only fulfills the daily necessaties of the community, but is also supports the spiritual and cultural core of 'The Basin Township'. The partition between the site and the suburban streets is partially closed. The landscape design as well as implementation is not up to the mark. This results in poor site accessibility and negatively affects the aesthetics of the site. In addition, due to the reduced needs and resulting declined usage of the existing civic facilities. The functionality and the amenities are no longer suitable to meet the needs of residents. This project aims to continue and enrich 'The Basin Town's' culture & lifestyle with a very laid-back country village atmosphere. Reconfiguring the functionality of the existing buildings, adding new facilities and optimizing the landscape was essential part of the process. Furthermore, I attempted to bridge the gap between Architecture and Environment, generating a strong response to the needs of the community and the intrinsic qualities of the place. There are three different levels of interventions: light, moderate and strong intervention. These will be used to develop newer opportunities for site roads, buildings, and landscapes. These interventions intend to provide fully loaded service facilities which aim to promote more diversified participation of residents and stimulate the vitality of the site. In conclusion, it attempts to enhance, people's perspective on the site, ie. (cognitive feelings)" Triangle is the heart of The Basin Township".

History The name “The Basin” is attributed to Baron Von Mueller who established a camp in 1853 on the creek flats near the corner of The Basin-Olinda and Sheffield Roads. The flat area of land on this corner combined with the surrounding hills form a distinct basin. Von Mueller, musing as he camped in this area, named it “The Basin”. In 1868, John Hardy created the first map of the Dandenongs and was the first to officially pen the name “The Basin” on a map. It is known that Aborigines have inhabited Australia for 40,000 years or more and The Basin area was home to the Wurundjeri tribe. The Aboriginal tribes knew of the fertility of The Basin area, and indeed even up to the 1860’s members of tribes hunted the forest and fern gullies for wallaby, possum and native bear. The first recorded white visitor to The Basin was W. H. Hovell who explored the area in 1827.Hovell’s intention was to survey the country around the settlement before heading across country toward Sydney. Hovell came well equipped, with four fine horses, two pack saddles, horseshoe nails, and presents for the blacks. Three convicts had been assigned to accompany him. Hovell’s explorations were so successful that he abandoned the idea of crossing to Sydney by country and instead returned by boat. William Turner his wife Margaret and their children were the first known long term white residents of The Basin. it was well remembered in his family that he was only 2 weeks old when they moved to the area now known as The Basin. He also claimed that their house was located on what is now The Basin- Olinda Road. Image: Three Cover of "Histroy of The Basin -Fire on the Hill Flowers in the Valley"

Eastern Rosella-The Basin Emblem
On Hardy’s map, a dray track starts near land marked “Turner” in The Basin and then heads East splitting into two tracks, each following a ridge to the top of the mountain. These tracks are most likely the first tracks in the area and would have been created by William Turner. The Northern track became known as the “Bullock Track” or “Holden’s Track” and follows the route of what later became Range Road to Olinda. The Southern track follows the route of what later became Cobblestone Road to Ferny Creek. Both tracks would have been initially constructed to cart timber from the forest to Melbourne.

-In 1948 the original St Mary's Church of England building was moved in sections to that site, by a horse and wagon. -During the late 1980’s, because there was a fall in numbers, the parish decided to close St. Mary's Church in 1989. The property was sold to Melbourne Vinayagar Hindu Sangam.
2
-The original church was demolished to clear the land for the building of the temple but the meeting hall was not demolished -The problem is to considere a reasonable compromise for the Hindu and local communities.

-The other issue is the car parking. Finally, having several times negotiationa , the old meeting hall had been demolished replaied by a parkinglot.

The Basin Triangle In the early 1920’s, it was part of a subdivision as part of Chandler’s Hill Estate and a few homes and shops were built on the allotments created. The Basin Progress Association fought for many years to have this area declared and converted to a public space.
Image:
The Councils concept was to categorise the use of The Triangle into active and passive. -Active uses included the existing Progress Hall, Elderly Citizens Hall and the Fire Station -Passive uses included yet to be provided children’s playground, bowling green, car parking and grass area. Passive usage would be encouraged to retain a “village green” atmosphere.

The Basin Progress Hall was the hub, with the Post Office and shops gathered around it. It remains so today. The same roadside oak trees shelter a delightful park. The Basin Progress Hall, but it was not until 1958 that the current special purpose building was opened in Forest Road. The Basin YWCA Friendly Circle was formed on the 11 March 1980 and used The Basin Progress Hall as their meeting place. The foundation members were Brenda Jackson, Nance Fraser, Lorraine Burrows, Brenda Nudd, Iris Smith, Enid Franks, Ivy Lynch, Val Tokell and Joyce Yeamon. The object of the group as stated by the constitution is “To unite women and girls through faith in Jesus Christ in worldwide fellowship. It is also to give ladies over 35 years a chance to meet and make new friends and to help the needy in the area. From a small beginning, meeting twice a month, by 1994 they had over fifty members attending meetings. By the success of the club, friendly circles were formed in Mooroolbark and Wantirna.Sadly, the group closed in 1999.

Existing Buildings-Elderly Citizens Club (1973)
-1972: Constructd on the triangle
The Basin Elderly Citizens Club began operation in 1965 as The Basin Pensioners Association. The objective of the Association was to look after the social and welfare needs of the members in The Basin area. The decision to build clubrooms on The Basin Triangle was controversial because The Basin Progress Association already had an agreement with Knox Council that the Triangle was to be used for passive recreation. UnfortunatelyďźŒIn 2018, the club was deregistered because of a reduced need for the elderly facilities. In 2020 the clubrooms are still used by many other community and private groups with bookings controlled by The Basin Community House. The high demand for use of the facilities is testament to the previous efforts of the Club and Knox Council in keeping the facilities at a high standard.

Reading Task Excerpts of ‘The Sublime and the Beautiful’, Burke, E. Excerpts of ‘Critique of Judgement’, Kant, I.
Sublime The reading explores the psychological source of beauty and sublime from the perspective of human instinct. -Sublime is the strongest emotion that the soul can perceive -Anything that can cause pain and danger in some way, or anything that can be terrifying in some way, that is source of sublime. -The feelings aroused by beauty are more similar to melancholy than happiness and joy. -The highest level of sublime is astonishmnet. Joseph Wright of Derby (1734‑1797), Vesuvius in Eruption, with a view over the Islands in the Bay of Naples
27

The Sublime of Terror Horror is a source of sublime, and the highest level of sublime is astonishment. If we can see danger clearly, if our eyes have gotten used to it, a large part of the terror will disappear.
http://cheminfaisant.eklablog.com/jean-marie-poumeyrol-p95396
Two of the "most effective" reasons that architecture can promote the sense of sublime are continuity and unity. For the objects that can inspire fear and horror, suspense and uncertainty are the most effective reasons for a sense of sublime.

To commemorate this story, which gave the village its name, Xu Tiantian developed a building that takes up the local construction of bridges and residential buildings. Coarsely hewn stones are layered in a wild lattice to create massive walls that continue the slope on the edge of the village out into the landscape. The architecture is connected with the landscape by means of various sequences of spaces both inside and out. An existing irrigation channel was guided over the roof and provides water, which, on particular days, is sprayed by nozzles to create a water curtain on the inside. By means of a linear opening in the roof, sunlight falls on the water curtain, where a rainbow forms. This temporary phenomenon attracts visitors, who then enliven neighboring villages as well.

Facility and Infrastructure Parking Lot
Straight Parking
45 Degree Angle Parking
Existing The Basin Triangle Parking Space
60 Degree Angle Parking
30 Degree Angle Parking
The existing option for a parking space that we are familiar with is the perpendicular or straight parking model. In this form, the driver has to turn their vehicle a full 90 degree from the traffic lane in order to enter their parking space.Angled parking lots are a better use of space than straight lots. Situating parking spots at a 45 degree angle leads to an efficiency savings of 23%, because cars need to change their angle much less than in a straight lot. However, an too small angle will cause harder to line up the nose of the vehicle. In addition, when the angle of inclination is smaller, the requirements for the long side of the parking lot are higher. To further optimize space in the parking areas, consider creating a lot that is rectangular rather than an irregular shape.Compared to one-way traffic lanes, allow two-way traffic lanes to access parking stalls on either side of the driving aisle for the highest space efficiency. Overall, 30 degrees should be the most convenient, and the turning angle of the front of the car is not large when entering the parking position, which has little impact on the main road lanes.

View from Forest Road
On the west side of Forest Road are retail and residential areas, and the surrounding residents mainly enter the basin triangle from the west. At present, there are only pedestrian zebra crossings at the junction of cones street and forest road and roundabout. The interface of the basin triangle for the forest road is closed, mainly in three aspects. First, plants and green belts prevent people from observing the activities inside the triangle. Second, there is only one entrance on the side of the forest road, which has poor accessibility. Third, the forest road has a large traffic volume, and lacks pedestrian safety instructions and facilities, and lacks safety.

Key view lines have been identified as important to maintain the village atmosphere of The Basin, capturing the association between built form, the Dandenong Ranges and the existing canopy trees and the park. In particular, it is noted that: 1. View towards the Dandenong Ranges backdrop is significant. Canopy trees in the foreground and middle distance provide the sense of location within the Dandenong Foothills. 2. From street level, while quite filtered, there are significant ridgeline views of the Dandenong Ranges ridgeline over the Eastern precinct. This backdrop provides a strong sense of the Village’s location within the Dandenong Foothills. 3. At the north of the Basin Triangle, canopy tall trees & vegetation frame the open public space. This is an pleasant green space without any buildings.

Activity & Culture
The Basin Music Festival The Basin Music Festival is held annually each March. After Fridays opening night acts, Saturday was the festival’s main day with Sunday featuring a village fair and picnic in the park. In addition to the music found throughout the indoor and on the free stage in the park, the festival included exhibitions and displays by community groups and organisations, including The Basin Fire Brigade who also shared in the profits, with activities for kids and a very laid-back country. Village atmosphere Successful events have also been held every year since. Except for the first year, local resident John Allan has been the host for the event. Associated with the music festival is the popular “The Basin Big Break Youth Stage” for performers under the age of 18 and 25 years. For the years up to 2011, this event was held during the yearly festival in March. In 2012, the event had its own dedicated weekend in July and was an outstanding success. In later years, in the months before the main event, a series of free summer music concerts have been held in the Triangle.

Merry Christmas Eve-Santa Run The Christmas Eve “Santa Trips” that started back in the 1960’s On Christmas Eve, Fire Brigade tinsel covered fire trucks circulate through The Basin with Santa stationed on the back. Firefighters will dress up as Santa Claus to interact with the children. What is more, the Basin Firefighters help answer allchildren’ Christmas letters and the letter box is now an established tradition in the Basin town. In addition to publicizing daily fire information, The Basin Fire Brigagade massage board will also publicize triangle activity plans.

Community Bonds The Basin Triangle Renovation & Renewal
Continuation and inheritance of the Basin town's culture and life mode with a very laid-back country village atmosphere. Reconfiguring the functionality of the existing buildings, adding new facilities and optimizing the landscape was essential part of the process. Furthermore, I attempted to bridge the gap between Architecture and Environment, generating a strong response to the needs of the community and the intrinsic qualities of the place. Three different levels of intervention are used for the site and the building. Provide more complete service facilities which aim to encourage and promote more diversified participation of surrounding residents and stimulate the vitality of the site. The Basin Triangle not only fulfils the daily necessities of the community but it also supports the spiritual and cultural core of 'The Basin Township'. My Proposal intends to continue the enrichment of this site.
61
Studio 32_Basin
The residents of The Basin transform their roles according to different activities, and voluntarily contribute and serve their communities. Community facilities also change their functions and usage based on different needs. The facilities on the site are designed to let the community grow itself. This self sufficient (flexible and changeable) community life mode is the core of The Basin Township.

Through establishing a community bond, it includes physical and mental ways. This community bond connects the originally spontaneous and disorderly community activities. It not only enhances the connection of service functions, but also revitalizes the architectural space and promotes the communication / involvement of community residents.

Studio 32_Basin
Based on the previous analysis, I aim to provide a more complete service infrustrcture while continuing and inheriting the town’s culture and lifestyle. Ultimately, I want to achieve the goal of self-governing residents and sustainable development of the community.

Strategies Specifically, there are three different levels of interventions- Light, Moderate and Strong Intervention. The light intervention is to protect natural resources and enhance the visual dominance of vegetation. Improve the accessibility of the site. For the Moderate Intervention, it is mainly based on the re de fi ni tion of functions of existing buildings, the renovation of existing spaces, and the upgrading of facilities. The strong intervention attempts to add new Program and buildings and experience to meet current and future needs.

Design Development-Mid Semester Regarding the revival of the basin, the most important thing for me is to improve the existing services and facilities on the basis of maximizing the preservation of the existing community spirit. Therefore, I think that my intervention should not be limit to the architectural level, but should extend to the entire the Basin Triangle even adjacent area. Firstly, enumerate the interest of moment and the insufficiencies obtained from the previous research on the site. Then I classify them and try to find the connection between them.

The Basin Progress hall is considered a contributory building to the character of The Basin. I retained its architectural form. Because it is close to the new visitor entrance, a visitor service centre has been added to better provide services and as si stance to tourists and locals. The hall inside will be used as an exhibition space. At the same time, here it has the best viewing value, view to the Dandenong Ranges and opinions to the basin paddocks. Therefore, a viewing platform is added here.

Based on existing space and function, I intend to add a one-story community activity centre on the south of the senior citizens centre. It has a Theatre, Activities room and 24H Library. The space of the Activity centre can be divided according to the needs of activities. The side facing the children playground can be fully opened to form an open Air activity space. A new walkway with canopy and crossing can provide local to entry into the heart of Triangle.

Precedent Study Project name:Protótipo de Pavilhão Location: Kenya Architect: Laura KatharinaSträhle&Ellen Rouwendal Completion Date: 2016
The project was inspired by a local acacia tree. People in the community usually gather under the canopy of these trees to protect themselves from the strong sun and rain. The shape of the roof, the open space it creates and the permeability of the walls can not only collect rainwater, but also a cool and ventilated environment.
