Urban Suture Chelsea Train Station Redesign & Infrastructure Improvement

Edithvale, Chelsea and Bonbeach (ECB) are located approximately 30km from Melbourne CBD. ECB centres are located at the southern end of the municipality, where the Frankston rail line sits immediately alongside Port Phillip Bay. Along that ridge of the primary dune, there was a 60metre transport corridor laid out which now comprises the Nepean highway, the Melbourne Frankston railway line and Station street (a local road). This project chooses chelsea station as the proposed design, replacing a new rail-over train station, optimizing the existing infrastructure and the landscape. It aims to enhance the urban synergy relationship with the Edithvale and Bonbeach; strengthening Chelsea's role of commercial, cultural, and service center, in turn connecting and diversifying the future development and representing the historic background. The main concept is Stitching: The new train station and landscape are used as a suture(medium) to stitch the original split condition. It attempts to strengthen Chelsea's role as a commercial, cultural, and service center, in turn connecting and diversifying the future development and celebrating the natural resources value. It promotes the complementarity between the different communities and their lifestyles, thus forming a unique urban style and texture.

The Level Crossing Removal Project is one of the largest rail infrastructure overhauls in the history of the state of Victoria. Established by the Victorian government, the goal of this project is to eliminate 75 level crossings across metro Melbourne by 2025. Six of these level crossings and three train stations fall in the following suburbs we are examining; Edithvale, Chelsea and Bonbeach (ECB) on the Frankston line. ECB is located approximately 30km from Melbourne CBD with a total population* of about 20,000. The suburbs share a popular stretch of sandy beach outlining the North-Eastern shorelines of Port Phillip and wetlands to the East of the suburbs. The local history and terrain transition from beach to built to wetlands, plays host to a variety of flora and fauna celebrated by the community. Group Work: Everyone’s focus on the site is different. How to summarize and classify the different findings of the three people and finally establish the narrative of the entire site analysis presentation is what our group spends the most time discussing. Work Flow and Method: We use Miro, an online information sharing and display platform recommended by our tutor. Every group mates will pin up their materials (photos, drawings, research) on this platform, and display the results of the conference discussion on this platform as a stick note. Compared with the conventional model, I think miro provides a convenient and diversified information storage platform.

Chelsea History Focus on Community Culture and Environmental Status: The Site is located in a low-density town with a beautiful natural environment and far away from the CBD. The existing railway station mainly serves the surrounding residents. I think that ultimately the new train station will not only solve the traffic problems, but also reflect the culture of the community. Finally, the new train station can truly integrate into the community and surrounding environment.

In addition to serving as a station, Chelsea station was also the town’s commercial center. It not only provides accurate timekeeping, but is also an iconic landmark and assist with illuminating the town in this area.

This Demographic Analysis was done by my team member Christine. Her main way of expression, was to use diagrams, table and pictures to present her the demographic condition of the site. The right side of the slide was matched with the site map, to mark the relevant location. I very much agree with this way of expression in this presentation. Regarding a digital presentation without the limitation of the number of pages and file size. This expression uses the same format, simple drawing style, and each page only displays one type of information, which makes it very clear and efficient. However, if these contents need to be printed out, it may be necessary to integrate information appropriately considering expansion in the size of the page. Too many pages using the monotonous drawing format will make the audience lose interest quickly. N Boundary of Kingston

The section cutting from the Edithvale station, the existing position and condition of the rail line proves to be a significant barrier to cross-corridor connectivity due to the poor visual connection and complicated crossing opportunities.

A 60metre transport corridor which divides the east and west regions, are connected by existing level crossing. The transport corridor shares the paths of different modes of transport such as pedestrians, cyclists, buses and other vehicles. Lecture Note

Road & Rail options selection will be the key point of this project. The five options are listed together through a simple description and diagram, which can compare the advantages and disadvantages of each method more intuitively and clearly. In fact, there is no single answer to these five choices. As a designer, you should choose these options according to the economy, environment and my design tendency.

The site analysis assignment uploaded at the last minute got good feedback and results. Compared with other groups, I think the advantages of our group are as listed below: - Great in-deep and comprehensive research and study of the site areas. - Great efforts on including the site sections and sound recordings. - Great Presentation Structure and group combination. In term of presentation, graphics presentation is a relatively obvious insufficiency at present. According to tutor’s feedback, the line weight, color choice for legends, etc should be improved to enhance the readability of information. I also very much agree with this view. I think that this issue is mainly caused by different display devices. For example, the clarity of projecting the same information on a whiteboard is not the same as when you sit in front of a computer screen at a close distance. We need to consider the final presentation tool to make adjustments accordingly.

Ass 2: Case Study Individual Work

Although this assignment was completed in only one day, and the workload was relatively large, I decided to spend four hours on taking train to the site for site visiting (field investigation is not compulsory) in order to get an intuitive space experience and utility experience. I find it difficult for me to resonate with a building or a site if I do not come to the site in person. “No matter how detailed the text description or picture, it’s not as strong as the feeling of standing in front of the building in person”. I have always agreed with this point of view. There are many experiences that I brought my notebook and pen sitting in site when I was stuck in the stage of design development. Imagining what kind of design can demand people’s requirement if you become a user of the design; imagining if it will look good when my design is built in this site. In the six years of architectural design study, this method have helped me break through the barren patch of my design many times. City Melbourne

The South Morang Rail Extension provides improved access to public transport services for Melbourne’s northern communities. The creation of two new stations (at South Morang and Thomastown) and the relocation and modernization of a third (Epping Station) lies at the heart of this project, with all three forming key nodal points in a longer-term urban focus. Each of the stations are clearly identifiable as three parts of a greater urban vision linking current and future activities. The station canopies operate as sculptural forms at a civic scale, folding and unfolding in response to their site and functional contexts, while providing visual orientation and integrating the station buildings and platforms with the ground plane and wider context. 35 Studio 27_Connect

Although this is just a case study assignment, I made a model of the station in 3D. It is a challenge for me to design a train station. Apart from the aesthetics and station programs, it has many specific industrial standards that need to be satisfied. Therefore, it is a good opportunity to try to build a digital model of this project which helped me understand the circulation mode of a train station.

Due to the lack of reasonable time management for previous group assignment, it resulted in me having only one day to complete the Individual case study assignment. It is a really bad experience of working overnight which makes me very exhausted. I even gave up part of the contents because I was too sleepy to persist. It proves once again that a reasonable time allocation for tasks is crucial for architects. Although the final feedback and grades are not too bad, I am still not satisfied with this assignment experience this time. We will enter the stage of urban scale design proposal in this week. The word “Urban design strategy” makes me feel very confused, because this is a individual design studio and the final design outcome will also be presented in person. Why do we need to propose urban design in the form of a group in just the third week? A few team members and I discussed this issue first before starting our proposal. It is really necessary that if you don't really understand the reason behind this task and its requirements, the final result may deviate from the whole theme. In this part, tutor wants us to propose a concept strategy instead of a urban design (it does not need to be very specific). These issues and strategies are to help us better understand the site. They will help us find out the entry point of our design. The reason why we are in the form of a group mainly aims to integrate more different ideas and thought through a group which can quickly help us accumulate our understanding of the city and design goals. Our team uses brainstorming to first collect the different ideas and potentials of each team member and then discuss the feasibility and rationality of these proposal to fillet out the final four issues and corresponding proposals. The research field and presentation slides making can be allocated as far as possible according to the interest of each person. In order to have a closer linked between the second individual assignment and the group assignment, we will first determine the proposed station site for each person before assigning this group work so that the later drawing process can be more targeted. It can reduce the workload of the individual assignment.

Congratulations to our group, this was a great presentation with an articulate structure. In fact, even if we spend more than half of the time discussing the structure of the presentation and understanding the relationship between each part (issues, opportunity and urban strategy) the time to make slides can be greatly saved when we have clarified the overall structure. Before starting to make the slide, I briefly listed an outline and allocated the time for each part to ensure the length of the final presentation and the content of each page of the slide. I think this step of work has a positive impact on the ultimate success of our presentation. From the on-site teacher and classmates’ comments and final scores, our context analysis and proposed strategies are accurate and feasible. However, we still have some problems: 1: Part of the hatching is too dense to see clearly. 2: Insufficient analysis and evaluation of rail typologies/options In response to these issues, I try to add the missing content in the individual presentation on Friday.

Four Mains Issues in Chelsea

Compared with Urban Strategy in group, this individual assignment will zoom into one proposed station. The analysis and evaluation of different rail options and relocation option will be the main focus in this assignment. I very much agree with the studio’s arrangement for design planning. For all students, including me, I have never been in contact with any station design, which has many specific conditions that need to be met, such as height, track design, and so on. This kind of guidance mode of group work and individual work interspersed, from a large range to a small range of thinking can help us quickly understand this studio topic. Basically, the four main issues in Chelsea are proposed according to group urban strategies. Therefore, I overlay new diagrams on the basis of the original urban scale mapping drawings which utilize bright colors and arrows to express the main existing problems of the site. 62 Studio 27_Connect

We are required to try at least two different rail options, and choose the one you think is appropriate by analysis and evaluation. According to the previous analysis, I attempt to test Rail Over and Rail Under. In order to be more intuitive and accurate for the rail option testing, I make a simple 3D model on Sketch up. In the Rail option testing part, most of the other students use simple diagrams for testing. This not only reduces the workload of this assignment, but also greatly simplifies a lot of unnecessary information. By contrast, if there is no relatively accurate digital or physical three-dimensional model, it is difficult for me to have an intuitive understanding. The height of the building, the shape change of each angle and the light and shadow can be simulated by the software. I spent the whole daytime on Thursday to complete the modeling of the two rail options, but this also led me to the final presentation slide completion at 4am on Friday. After completing a relatively accurate digital model, analysis and decisions can be made much easily. Shadow, circulation, height analysis will become clearer and more accurate. Based on these analysis and evaluations, rail over will be selected as the final option.

- The location of the station in between the strand and Sherwood Ave will optimize the existing road system and reduce the impact of the station on the residential area. - In terms of the Chelsea station strategies, after lifting up the railway, a high quality ,direct pedestrian link between east and west side will be created. It will provide the extended landscape and public realm to both sides of the corridor which will extend through the Bonbeach and Edithvale. - The diverse flexible new public spaces can satisfy Chelsea’s future development and needs. - The new vehicle crossing distinguishes pedestrians from vehicles, providing safer and more efficient crossing. - A new pathway is created to connect the community service shopping center , station and beach which is vital for the activation and iteration of both sides of the rail corridor. - The roads near the station should be scheduled so that the Nepean hwy and Station street will become the pedestrian-friendly street mode, and the street will be a pedestrian only-road, all vehicles will have limited speed and they can be diverted to go to Mornington Hwy. 79 Studio 27_Connect

Due to the mature residential community surrounding the current lot, the site elements are searched by slicing the entire site, emphasizing the relationship between seeing and be seen, and guiding people's sight and the connection of the site. Three main section types are extracted from the site and reconstructed to strengthen the sight of visitors on the platform. The space type is further generated, and the form of the roof is obtained. The comment of this prototype analysis from my tutor comment is “torture”. Yep, I am totally agree with that. This kind of urban section generation logic does not have individualism and rationalism.
