Greetings from the Mayor
celebrating innovation
may 15-21, 2010
San Francisco Small Business Week will help inspire your creativity, channel your passion, and support your success through dozens of educational and networking events. Connect with over 4,000 leaders in the small business community and walk away with new contacts, best practices and innovative ideas that you can put into action today! Come celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit that is the heart of San Francisco. Thanks to our Sponsors & Host Organizations
Join me, the San Francisco Small Business Commission, U.S. Small Business Administration, Wells Fargo Bank, and all of our sponsors, to kick-off the celebrations and events of National Small Business Week, May 15-21, 2010, here in San Francisco. This year, we are coming together to “Celebrate Innovation” as we inspire, honor, educate, and connect small businesses, which make up 98% of all businesses in the City. San Francisco takes great pride in being home to a vibrant community of small and new startup businesses - the dreamers and doers who really add richness to our city. Despite facing economic challenges, San Francisco, with its metropolitan setting and world-class culture, continues to be an ideal location for startup business ventures because we recognize the small business sector as being the backbone of San Francisco’s economic landscape. Supporting and investing in San Francisco small businesses is both good for our economy and our citizens. The City continues to serve the interests of small business owners with an economic stimulus plan that provides much needed capital through my Revolving Loan Fund. We have the JOBS NOW program, which subsidizes 100% of the wages of a newly hired employee. With over 2,100 applicants placed, many of whom are working for small businesses
throughout San Francisco, we are creating jobs and providing small businesses the much needed assistance to survive and grow. This year, I also created the Central Market Partnership, an economic development project to renew and coordinate efforts to revitalize the Central Market neighborhood, including an $11.5 million pool of low-interest loans to small businesses; and after its launch in 2008, the Small Business Assistance Center in City Hall has become the go-to place for all small business-related matters for both existing and new businesses. All these efforts are intended to help you, our much valued small business owners, and to make San Francisco the ideal place for your small businesses to thrive! Join me in celebrating small businesses for their contributions to our city’s economic vitality during Small Business Week 2010. Sincerely yours,
Gavin Newsom Mayor, City and County of San Francisco

Equally important to us is the recognition we give to outstanding business people and the advocates of small businesses. This year, our Small Business of the Year is Janine Popick of VerticalResponse; the Financial Services Champion of the Year is Katy Johnson of Wells Fargo Bank; Barbara Kasoff, executive director of Women Impacting Public Policy will receive the Women in Business Advocate of the Year award; and Denise Coley, Director, Global Supplier Diversity Business Development for Cisco Systems, Inc. will be saluted as Minority Small
Business Champion of the Year. Each of them in their own way has made a difference to the world of small businesses in San Francisco and I’m happy we can highlight their contributions. Owning and operating a business is a demanding path for all entrepreneurs. At SBA, we understand the difficulties faced by them and are devoted to making that path a little smoother, a little easier. We offer financial assistance through our loan guarantees, help with government procurement through our Minority Enterprise Development and Government Contracting programs; and management assistance through counseling and on-going training. Details about our programs are available at www.sba.gov.

The classes will not promote or recommend any particular agent, broker, or insurance company. Presented By: Debra Butler, You’ LLC
Effective Goal Setting for Small Businesses Topic: Individual Development Room 609
Effective goal setting is essential for the long-term health of a business. Interestingly, most of us know how to set goals for our personal life. Unfortunately, many entrepreneurs have not been able to apply this rigor of personal goal setting to their professional lives and business success. In a round table conversation, professional coach Gary Purece from Lee Hecht Harrison, one of world’s largest talent management organizations, and serial media entrepreneur Todd Sotkiewicz, formerly of Wired, Lonely Planet and other organizations, currently at 7x7 Magazine and California Home + Design, will discuss what they have seen work and how they apply goal setting to their successes.
