Welcome to the 2015 DETAB Parade of Homes! What better opportunity than the Deep East Texas Association of Builders 2015 Parade of Homes to get new ideas for the home you’ve always dreamed of building. This will be a chance for several local builders to showcase their fantastic, professional work. Join us for two days of excitement as we spotlight exceptional homes throughout Angelina County and beyond. As always, the Parade of Homes will expand outside of Angelina County including Trinity and Milam. All of our DETAB members and builders work very hard to make this an exceptional event for our great community. This year, entry for the Parade of Homes is any donation of nonperishable food items. DETAB will then donate your proceeds to Godtel, a local ministry that is very appreciative of donations each year. Come see the latest trends in homebuilding, and get a good start on plans for building your future dream home! The Parade of Homes is Saturday, October 17th, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Sunday, October 18th, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Our builders are looking forward to meeting you, and members of Goodwill’s Youth Build program will be there to volunteer and help show you around each of the homes and assist builders. Make sure you pick up a Parade of Homes program at Brookshire Brothers, our member businesses, and at the homes. Our member directory is included so that if you need their services, their contact information will be at your fingertips. Here’s to a fantastic 2015 Parade of Homes,

Mike Hineman Mike Hineman 2015 DETAB President

DETAB Partnered with YouthBuild of the Pineywoods DETAB and YouthBuild of the Pineywoods started a project 3 years ago with Goodwill Industries of Central East Texas to help 18- to 24-year-old at-risk men and women lift themselves out of bad situations and into productive lives by learning the skills needed to work in the building trades industry. YouthBuild is a national program in which participants help build housing for low-income families, participate in construction-related service-learning activities that connect learning with civic engagement and develop relationships with construction-industry employers who also may serve as mentors. Mike Hineman, DETAB president, said YouthBuild is all about the American Dream to have a steady job and own a home. “These young people want and need our support so they can succeed in achieving the American Dream. The home building industry needs young people to become engaged in our industry and provide a ready workforce to build new homes in our communities. This is a win-win program for DETAB and the YouthBuild participants. We are honored to be a partner with YouthBuild of the Pineywoods.” Mike said. In February 2012, applicants were selected to take part in the first YouthBuild program in the Lufkin/Nacogdoches area. Howard Smith, YouthBuild Program Director, said most of the participants have not earned a high school diploma or their GED. “These are the very individuals were looking for when we started this program.” Since that first class, 55 students have completed the program. “We have closely aligned the education and construction programs so our students’ see how what they are learning is used in a real world application,” Howard said. Participants can receive highly recognized certificates, which makes them more employable, including their General Educational Development diploma (GED), (NCCER) Core Curriculum, (NCCER) Your Role in the Green Environment, (NCCER) Level 1 Carpentry, (PACT) Pre-Apprenticeship Construction Training, (OSHA) Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Participants spend 30 hours a week in the classroom, the shop or on the job site working on a Habitat for Humanity house or other projects. Prior to entering the program, all of the participants go through a Mental Toughness Orientation, just to help ensure they are well prepared to go the distance in the program. Plus, this local YouthBuild is one of just a few programs in the nation in which all the staff members are National Center for Construction Education and Research certified (NCCER). With donations of tools, siding, trusses and other materials by many DETAB members, the program is succeeding in its mission, Howard said. DETAB members are mentors and utilize the students on their jobs. Howard and Doug Douglas, the construction manager/trainer, bring two or three participants each month to DETAB’s lunch meeting, which provides participants the opportunity to interact builders and others in the business community. The participants also have the opportunity to speak to the group and explain what they are learning in the program. “The program has had a tremendous impact on our community,” Howard said. “I think this allows the community to see an untapped resource; to see a different side to these young men and women. They just need the opportunity, and this program is giving it to them.” 6

How to Build a DREAM Home With 40K!! That’s right, you can build alongside others who are less fortunate, as they construct their “Dream” home by offering your time to volunteer, supply building materials, donate labor and engage in many other ways to make a remarkable & sustainable difference in a family’s life, and our community! Habitat for Humanity of Angelina County, Inc. (“HFHAC”) provides partnership opportunities for low-income families to become homeowners locally through fundraising activities and the support of the community. Habitat for Humanity doesn’t believe in giving houses away, rather we seek public and private house sponsors, volunteer labor, and we require that the family invest their time and energy into building their own home and the homes of other partner families. When their “DREAM” home is complete, they repay their loan back to HFHAC over a 20 year mortgage at no interest, no downpayment & no closing costs! Our families could never afford a conventional loan but we believe ALL people should have a decent, affordable place to live. This truly is a dream, right? By working in partnership with families to become homeowners and requiring that the families put hundreds of hours of “sweat equity” into their home, Habitat affiliates have a unique place in the affordable housing field. While most affordable housing providers focus on either rental or subsidized mortgages and down payment programs to serve families up to 80% of area median income (AMFI), Habitat for Humanity seeks public and private house sponsors, volunteer labor, and requires that the family invest their time and energy into building their own home and the homes of other partner families. Through these efforts, Habitat affiliates are able to provide mortgages to families whose incomes are not greater than 60% of AMFI without a profit to the affiliate. The mortgages are then invested in more homes. Across Angelina County, the need for affordable housing far exceeds the resources to address the issue. According to the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs’ (TDHCA) 2014 State Low Income Housing Plan, 47% of renter households and 27% of all homeowner households have a housing need due to lack of affordability or substandard conditions. A total of 40.6 percent of all households are in the low-income range (0 to 80 percent of AMFI). In order to further the Habitat for Humanity mission of eliminating

Continued from page 10 poverty housing, we must be able to build homes that are sustainable, safe and affordable. In 2014 HFHAC experienced some amazing results due to the contributions of many partners in our community. We closed on 2 homes with the construction help of the Youthbuild Pineywoods studentsThe new homeowners consisted of 3 adults & 9 children who now are proud owners of their DREAM home! Goodwill Industries of East Texas entered into a consignment agreement with HFHAC so that we would have an outlet to sell our donated new & used construction materials that we are unable to use on our homes. This income helps to pay for materials and labor we must purchase. People like Melvyn Linton Construction, Home Depot, McCoys, ATCO, Floors ‘N More and others have been so gracious to donate construction items for our consignment. Your donations also can also serve to give your business a nice tax break!! We are proud of our new website: www.hfhac.com where one can see what we’re about & even donate money. Follow us on Facebook at “Habitat for Humanity of Angelina County, Inc.” for updates & news of all we’re accomplishing in your community. Finally, we had 2 of our 20 families complete their mortgage payments in FULL!! Goals Accomplished! You should have seen the smiles on their faces and those of their family, when we held a Mortgage Burning for them! We now are halfway through building our current home, one of three that will be built side-by-side on Culverhouse Street in the Habitat 1 Subdivision. So won’t you help us with your time & talents? Life has been good to many of us and has afforded us a nice, beautiful, safe home (and for many a true DREAM home) with a steady business income that provides things that low-income families will probably never enjoy. As you have been blessed, please take time to consider giving back to your community through donating to Habitat. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! For further information or to offer your support please call 936.632.8445. Very Truly Yours,

Terri G. Cawley, Executive Director

The Texas Association of Builders is dedicated to creating a positive business environment for the housing industry by addressing the housing issues of the people of Texas. As a member of TAB, you are entitled to receive the benefits of programs and services that are not available to the general public. Residential Construction Contracts Package Available only to builder members, TAB’s contracts package subscription is your blueprint for typical construction and remodeling transactions, and can save you thousands of dollars in legal fees. Model Construction Safety Program and Jobsite Safety Standards Package © TAB’s Model Safety Plan and training webinar will provide you with comprehensive guidelines to help you train your employees regarding their responsibilities and to help you establish good safety procedures and systems for record keeping required by OSHA. Endorsed Insurance Program Developed with the backing of the strongest insurance carriers serving the Texas building industry, the exclusive TAB endorsed insurance program offers new flexible options and rates that are more competitive than ever before. Products include General Liability, Builders’ Risk, Workers’ Compensation, Excess Liability and Commercial Umbrella. Advocacy TAB represents your interests at the Texas Capitol and before state regulatory agencies.
