Project Introduction
1. Site
The setting for this programme is a much-forgotten aspect of East London; the Roding River and its environs in the bor-

common in today’s world, but there is a real sense of optimism and drive within the local leadership and many reasons to view Barking and the Roding river as a place ripe with opportunity rather than beset with problems.
2. Market Hall proposal
2.1 1:100 plans
This proposal is comprised of two aspects; the first being a masterplan proposal extending from the end of East Street
2.2 1: 100 sections
in the town centre, across Abbey Green and ending at town quay wharf; a unused site adjacent to the River Roding.
2.3 1: 100 elevations
The masterplan aims to revitalise the run down Abbey Green, returning it to its position as a hub for the town and its people. A new plaza at the end of East Street is proposed that will house independent retail and work sheds for local

Education facilities map - LBBD - 1:10,000 @ A1
Barking & Dagenham has a high provision of primary and secondary education facilities across the borough, with two primary schools situated on Abbey green itself. However, the provision of tertiary education is less extensive, with no specialist provision for creative courses and making. As a result my project identifies this gap in education provision and provides a building housing studios, workshops and other educational spaces specifically for creative and making based courses including fine art, sculpture and jewellery design. Coventry University currently has a campus in Barking & Dagenham and my scheme would be a space for them to provide creative degree courses, something not currently present in the borough. As my building functions as a market hall and community building as well, the use of studios and workshops would be open to the public but only at specific times, with Coventry University having priority during term time.

Structural strategy Roof:
Exploded structural axonometric drawing
The structural strategy for the scheme is set out across levels, with each level having a distinct structural and material expression. At basement level the key consid-
- standing seam zinc
eration is structural stability in poor soil conditions and water tightness due to the proximity to the River Roding, although the scheme is situated in flood zone 1, with a less than 1 in 100 annual risk of flooding. Concrete retaining walls are used to hold back earth from the site excavation, with a timber frame used to create a lighter, more open feel on the river facing facade. At street level the glulam timber frame system contributes largely to the internal and external expression of the building, highlighting the simplicity and quality of construction. Based on a 6m x 6m module the structure drives the plan layout and facade rhythm of the scheme with translucent polycarbonate cladding revealing the structural geometry behind and providing a contemporary take on the open air ground floor of a traditional market house. Translucent cladding also enhances views through the building to the River beyond.
1st floor:
Vertical western red cedar cladding at first floor level maintains the vertical rhythm of the polycarbonate below but allows for cellular and ancillary spaces to be housed in a more visually controlled envelope compared with the open market and community hall spaces below. The timber clad upper floor also echoes the

Envelope
As previously noted the primary material expression comes from the combination of translucent polycarbonate cladding and a glulam timber frame. The 6 x 6m module informs everything from structural grid to plan layout and facade co ordination. This module is divided into 500mm segments, with secondary timber structure and cladding corresponding to this. Polycarbonate was chosen as a cheaper, more robust alternative to glass to enable a transparency to the market hall, showcasing the activity inside and opening it up the public square in front. The model below shows how polycarbonate illuminates at night, showcasing a different structural expression and spatial quality within the market hall.
