Sift in the flour and bring the mixture together to form a dough. Using your hand, roll out the dough to about half a centimetre and using a rectangle shaped cutter, cut out your biscuits. Make Your Own Easter Bunny Mask Materials • Paper plate • Craft stick • White paper • Scissors • Tape • Glue • Red or pink pom pom • Pink and black markers • 2 black pipe cleaners Directions 1 Using scissors, cut two eye holes near the centre of a paper plate. We used luncheon size plates. 2 Cut two ears from white paper. Colour the inner part of the ear pink. Tape ears to the front (eating) side of the plate so that the coloured part shows on the outside. 3 Make the bunny’s face on the back side (non-eating) of the plate. Glue on a pom pom nose and draw a mouth. Draw teeth if desired. 4 Bend a pipe cleaner into thirds. Cut off one section. Keep the other part bent in half. Glue the bent piece on one side of the nose to make the bunny’s whiskers. Glue the smaller section in between the two bent halves. Repeat this process with the second pipe cleaner and glue the pieces on the opposite side of the nose. 5 Tape a craft stick handle to the back of the mask. 6 Once all the glue is dry you can wear your mask. Other Options • Skip cutting eye holes and glue on wiggly eyes, eyes cut from construction paper, or simply draw eyes onto your mask. • If you choose to colour your bunny, you could add teeth cut from paper, felt, or foam. • Add a bow tie made from paper or actual ribbon.

The

greatest gift you can give your child

Carol Hargreaves talks about... Ways to help your child’s self-esteem

Self-esteem is the real magic wand that can form a child’s future. A child’s self-esteem affects every area of her existence, from friends she chooses, to how well she does academically in school, to what kind of job she gets, to even the person she chooses to marry. Stephanie Martson, The Magic of Encouragement Building a healthy sense of self-esteem in kids during childhood is key to a happy life and to greater chances of a successful life as an adult. You probably already know this. Self-esteem is the way a person evaluates his or her own competence and their own worth. It can be influenced by a person’s family, upbringing, and environment, but it isn’t inherited like blue eyes or curly hair. It’s acquired, learned, developed, nurtured, taught. Self-esteem can be built and strengthened over time, or it can be gradually eroded. Perhaps if we ourselves look back we can identify times in our own childhood when our self esteem soared or when self esteem was damaged , even creating an enduring problem for us. We may have examples in our own lives that emphasise how important encouragement and support are to a child. A child with a healthy self-esteem is more likely to be well-balanced, be happy, have friends and achieve their potential at school. They will be more able to cope with change and be more resilient when things aren’t going as well as expected. No-one has more power to build a

Page|10

kid’s self-esteem than his or her own parents. You have a huge role to play. Self-esteem is the greatest gift you can give your child because with healthy self-esteem, anything is and will be possible. You already know that in order to keep our bodies healthy we must take daily actions. Washing, eating, exercising and relaxing are all examples of essential body-care actions. Similarly, helping your child to have a healthy self-esteem also takes time and effort. It requires daily attention - it is an on-going journey, one you take together with your child, with its ups and downs, highs and lows. This is not a burden, rather it is a wonderful gift to value and cherish. Healthy self-esteem is an essential life-skill we must nurture, teach and grow in our children. So what can you do as a parent to help build this valuable resource? To easily teach a child the essential life skill of maintaining healthy self-esteem I suggest using small persistent actions. I offer you these suggestions:

1

Make time to listen to your child Give them your whole attention and really listen. Specific actions, like making eye contact, kneeling down to your child’s level and even tilting your head, show your child you are listening. They also help YOU stop and really listen. If you can’t talk at that moment, you might say, “Let’s talk in a few minutes; I’m in the middle of something.” Remember to be consistent and follow this through.

2

Take time to talk If for example they are telling you about a problem they have had, repeat back to them, in their own words, what they have said to you. For example in response to “I had a bad day at school today” you might say, “ So you went to school and had a bad day?” Show a real interest by asking specific questions to gather more information. You might say, “Can you tell me exactly what happened?” If it makes sense to talk some more, you might ask, “What upset you the most?” Follow-up questions both acknowledge your child’s feelings and get her

0800 542 5873 | admin@letsgoguide.co.uk | www.letsgoguide.co.uk

talking about them. And they help you gather more information, so you can better understand what actually happened and how your child is thinking about it.

3

Celebrate your child’s achievements When your child has achieved something that is good for them (even if that same thing for another child is quite an ordinary everyday thing) make sure you reward them. This does not mean you should go to huge expense…I mean you could use positive language[develop a thoughtful and wide “praise vocabulary”] , use a tone of voice that conveys you are impressed and pleased and emphasise this using visual cues with your facial expression.

4

Behaviour If you need to address a behaviour issue, make sure that your child is aware that it is not them but the behaviour you disapprove of. This enables them to learn from this, de-identify with the behaviour and the disapproval, drop the behaviour and keep their self-esteem intact.

5

You are your child’s most influential role-model. Demonstrate your own self-esteem with the things you do and say. This is really important. You are your child’s most influential role model in life and whatever you do they will copy. If you show that you believe in yourself and have selfrespect they will learn this from you – you will be showing them through your example how to do it. If you struggle with this, pretend by “acting as if” you have a healthy self esteem. In that way, your unconscious mind will start to make it a reality for you too. A practical activity for you to do with your child: Put aside an hour to do this – give or take a bit and depending on your child’s age and abilities, this is probably enough time to spend concentrating on one thing [prepare the resources and equipment you will be using beforehand] Help your child create a special place in which to keep all their achievements, abilities and

positive qualities. It doesn’t matter which of the following suggestions you choose or if you develop an idea of your own – but it should be something appealing to your child and age-appropriate. I often use a papier-mache treasure-chest, a shoe box, a “This is your life” book made of folded colourful paper, a scrapbook or a zig-zag book [a strip of paper folded alternate ways] to store them in. Always follow their suggestions about how they want to represent their achievements – after all, it has to be a meaningful and lasting resource for them to use and that will only happen if they feel positive about what they are doing and are really engaged with the ideas. You might have some real photos, certificates or award slips to put in and you could create colourful frames or wallets. You could, as another alternative, . make something that represents one of their positive qualities, for example to represent kindness to other children you could cut heart shapes in lots of different colours and sizes from magazines and stick them down to make a collage. Use your attention and support, your behaviour and your language to create a positive experience for your child. Guide them into giving value and respect to their achievements , abilities and positive qualities giving attention to them frequently, improving them, updating and adding new events. This is an on-going process over time and will require your determination to make it meaningful to your child. Sometimes there will be negative experiences and things that knock your child’s self esteem. It is important that you help them develop the life-skill of dealing with setbacks. As a children’s therapist, I teach children how to do the reverse of the above activity. This process helps children deal with memories and thoughts they would rather not keep – maybe self doubt, embarrassing incidents or groundless worries and find a way to step back from them perhaps pushing them away, the further the better, letting them go. I have a couple of ideas for you to use. Perhaps your child could draw any worries on a

Page|11

To advertise in the next issue of Let’s Go! Guide, please call 0800 542 5873 | www.letsgoguide.co.uk colourful balloon and let it go, floating away into the air, taking with it any unpleasant feelings. Or make a paper aeroplane representing an embarrassing moment, and throw it off a bridge into a moving river that carries the worry away. You can probably come up with other ideas yourself that are just as good! So get started today and begin forming the healthy habit of building your child’s self-esteem one small step at a time, persistently, consistently, day-by-lovely-day! Here’s to improved and healthy self-esteem in your child. This is a link to a self esteem poster for kids. I personally think its rather wonderful! www.spiritwire.com/ kidsselfesteemposter.html#Order Self-esteem is the greatest gift you can give your child. With a healthy self-esteem anything is and will be possible. So what can you do as a parent to help build this valuable resource? Come to Old Holly Farm and learn some activities you can use to help your child grow up well-balanced, be happy, have friends and achieve their potential at school.

‘D’ Squadron

Lancashire Hussars Christmas 2012, six people got together in the coffee lounge of Manchester Art Gallery for a chat and a brew.

We also put a lot of effort and time into correct research of the Hussar regiment as it existed from 1848 until it gave up its horses in 1917.

After the initial idea, things got rolling and we made a successful application to the lottery for setting up the troop and off we rolled.

We currently have 6 riders but are always on the look out for help with the static displays and the horses. And of course riders or men willing to learn to ride and drill as per the Cavalry training manual.

The aim of the troop is to educate whilst entertaining. The project initial funded and independent research project at UCLAN. The results of this we amalgamated into our static display and became part of our concept of a living museum. We are based on ‘D’ Squadron, The Lancashire Hussars Territorial Yeomanry Cavalry of 1914. The Lancashire Hussars ‘D’ Troop is a enactment group currently recreating the Hussars as they existed in 1914.

We try to work with sponsors to put on the best show we can and work with The Museum of Lancashire in Preston and UCLAN. Not to mention the initial grant we received from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. We are extremely lucky to ride and train on the horses belonging to Atkinson Action Horses. The horses are highly trained for all events and shows that we put on. See more from our photo gallery at www.lancashirehussars.co.uk
