Dr. Brian J. Rosenzweig Dr. Rosenzweig received degrees in Biology and Political Science from one of the most highly rated undergraduate universities in the country, Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Rosenzweig was also a member of the varsity basketball team during all 4 years in college and, while at Emory, he was elected team captain and selected to the AllConference Team. After graduating from Emory University, Dr. Rosenzweig entered dental school at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Rosenzweig graduated from dental school with the highest honors and was elected to the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society. Dr. Rosenzweig was also recognized as the top dental student in the fields of Orthodontics, Oral Biology, Oral/Maxillofacial Radiology, and was recognized by the Pierre Fauchard Academy for the most outstanding academic achievement of any dental student in the Class of 1999. Dr. Rosenzweig also won the Medical College of Georgia’s ethics essay competition.

Lastly, Dr. Rosenzweig served as the Vice-President of the Medical College of Georgia Class of 1999. As a dental student, Dr. Rosenzweig spent several years doing temporomandibular joint disorder research in the private practice of Dr. Eugene Williamson (former chairman of the Medical College of Georgia orthodontic program and author of numerous orthodontic publications). Dr. Rosenzweig won numerous research competitions and published two articles. Dr. Rosenzweig received his orthodontic specialty training at the University of Rochester-Eastman Dental Center. The University of Rochester has one of the most storied legacies in the realm of orthodontic education and is truly unique in its emphasis on treating Craniofacial Disorders such as Cleft Lip & Palate. Prior to moving to Bend, Dr. Rosenzweig was able to practice with and learn from Drs. Michael Stewart & Melissa Rathburn in Atlanta, Georgia. Drs. Stewart & Rathburn are two of the most widely respected

4

orthodontists in the country and are featured speakers on a variety of orthodontic topics. In addition, Dr. Rosenzweig was the orthodontist on staff for the Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital Craniofacial Team from 2001-2003. This prestigious hospital is one of the leading centers in the country for the treatment of children with craniofacial disorders such as cleft lip & palate. Dr. Rosenzweig’s experiences in Atlanta and the opportunity to work with the very best provided a strong foundation for his ongoing orthodontic education.

In 2003, Dr. Rosenzweig purchased Dr. Norm Royse’s practice and moved to Bend (with his wife, a 16 month old, a 2 month old, a dog, and a cat). In addition to being an absolute gentleman, Dr. Norm Royse was a fantastic orthodontic clinician and Dr. Rosenzweig will always be grateful for the time they were able to spend working together. Since moving to Bend, Dr. Rosenzweig has become a member of the following professional organizations: American Board of Orthodontics, Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, Central Oregon Dental Society, Seattle Study Club, Spear Advanced Education Study Club, and has been named a “Recognized Specialist” at the Kois Dental Center. Dr. Rosenzweig enjoys spending time with his former high school sweetheart and wife, Andrea, and their four children: Brendan, Tyler, Rachel, and Jay. Dr. Rosenzweig also enjoys fly-fishing, skiing, outdoor photography, coaching basketball, and all that Central Oregon has to offer.

Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics What is a Board Certified Orthodontist? An orthodontist is a dentist who has completed an American Dental Association accredited graduate program in the specialty of orthodontics. A dentist who graduates from a specialty program becomes an orthodontic specialist who is eligible to become board certified through the voluntary examination process of The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO). Involvement in the certification process is a demonstration of the orthodontist’s pursuit of continued proficiency and excellence.

5

The certification process involves a thorough Written Examination covering all areas of information on which an orthodontist should be knowledgeable. Successful passage allows the orthodontist to present treated cases which will be evaluated by expert examiners of the Board during a Clinical Examination. Certification is now awarded for a time-limited period and the orthodontist must re-examine on a periodic basis to retain the board certified status. Through this accomplishment, an orthodontist has earned the title of Diplomate of the ABO. Dr. Rosenzweig was the first orthodontist in Central Oregon to become Board Certified.

We look forward to welcoming you to our office and to making you feel like a guest in our home.

We believe . . . a beautiful smile helps build self-esteem, self-confidence, and lasts a lifetime! a properly functioning bite will reduce the likelihood of future abnormal tooth wear and, in some cases, may provide greater stability and comfort in the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) straight teeth are easier to clean many dental procedures can be done more ideally if the teeth are appropriately positioned orthodontic care should be provided in a fun and caring environment we believe in striving for excellence in all that we do!

8

Treatment Philosophy Whenever possible, we strive to provide high quality orthodontic treatment in a single phase of treatment. With the technology available today in orthodontics, most patients can be treated in a single phase of treatment. There are situations when early orthodontic treatment is indicated and, when indicated, we also provide this service. Orthodontic treatment is about much more than just straight teeth. We are focused on the effects that our treatment will have on facial esthetics, the smile, and the functionality of the bite. We strive to provide a smile and a bite that will last a lifetime! Dentistry has become much more complex and many cases benefit from a multi-disciplinary approach. Our office takes great pride in working closely with Central Oregon’s finest dental care providers to help patients achieve the most ideal treatment outcomes. There are great technologies available today in the field of orthodontics and we are proud to be on the cutting edge. Our practice was the first to offer the following services in Central Oregon: self ligating braces (Damon & Empower), Invisalign, and the Suresmile orthodontic technique. We will always strive to provide the most cutting edge orthodontic treatments available.

9

When compared to other dental procedures, orthodontic treatment involves more appointments and a greater overall duration of treatment. As a result, continuity and consistency of care are critical in achieving the highest quality orthodontic outcome. Dr. Rosenzweig prides himself on being a “solo practitioner” and will be attending to all of your or your child’s care at every appointment. Unlike a multi-doctor office, Dr. Rosenzweig will be personally involved with every aspect of treatment every step of the way. In this day and age, medical and dental care has become less personalized. Dr. Rosenzweig takes pride in spending as much time with patients as they need and in providing them with a thorough understanding of their diagnosis & treatment. When needed, Dr. Rosenzweig is accessible via e-mail and cell phone.

The braces that we use . . . At Rosenzweig Orthodontics, we exclusively use self ligating braces to provide the most efficient treatment possible. Self ligating braces allow your teeth to be moved using light forces, resulting in less discomfort and more biologically efficient tooth movement. As a result, your treatment not only takes less time and requires fewer appointments, but is far more comfortable than with traditional/nonself ligating braces. Lastly, self ligating braces promote better oral hygiene than traditional braces since they do not require elastomeric “ties to hold the archwire into position. Dr. Rosenzweig was the first orthodontist in Central Oregon to begin using self ligating braces (i.e. Damon) and continues to be the leader in these technologies.

13

The Invisalign Experience

Dr. Rosenzweig was the first orthodontist in Central Oregon to begin using Invisalign and is the most experienced Invisalign doctor in the region. For patients who qualify for treatment, Invisalign provides a very comfortable means of tooth movement without any brackets or wires: Invisalign is truly the “invisible treatment option.

The Suresmile Difference With any orthodontic treatment, regardless of what type of braces are utilized, the essence of a high-quality outcome relies on the orthodontist’s ability to precisely position the teeth in an ideal alignment and coordinated fit. This challenging task has historically been undertaken by the orthodontist manually manipulating orthodontic archwirs (i.e. bending) and/or changing the positions of the braces on the teeth. This process is an inexact science and is the most time consuming aspect of a patient’s care. Suresmile changes everything. Through advanced 3-D imaging, a computerized model of the patient’s teeth and bite is constructed. The orthodontist can then precisely position the teeth using high tech interactive software. Utilization of

this software allows the orthodontist to view & modify the positions and fit of the teeth in a way never before possible. Once the teeth are placed into their final positions by the orthodontist, a robot in Dallas, Texas, will custom bend a memory archwire to precisely move the teeth to their intended positions. These robotically engineered custom wires, for the first time in the history of orthodontics, allow precise & custom tooth movement for each individual tooth! It is important to note that these wires are not moving the teeth at a greater rate of speed, but simply with more precision. Using the Suresmile technology, we are able to reduce the patient’s overall treatment time by approximately 40% and achieve the highest level of quality. The ability to achieve the highest quality of care in the shortest amount of time is a truly enjoyable experience for all!

Dr. Rosenzweig was the first orthodontist in Central Oregon and one of the first 100 orthodontists in the world to begin using the Suresmile treatment system. Suresmile has recently been featured on Good Morning America, Brink Science Channel, and numerous news outlets. Dr. Rosenzweig is currently one of the most experienced Suresmile providers on the West Coast.

Types of Bites At Rosenzweig Orthodontics, we take a lot of pride in educating our patients on the specific nature of their bite problems as well as the various treatments that we offer. After reviewing a patient’s diagnostic information (photos, study models, and radiographs), Dr. Rosenzweig personally reviews the diagnosis and treatment plan with each patient. The following pages illustrate some of the most common types of orthodontic problems and show before and after photographs. All of the patients shown in these case examples are actual patients treated by Dr. Rosenzweig.

Class II Bites.............................................. 20 Class II Bites, Surgical............................. 21 Class III Bites............................................. 22 Class III Bites, Surgical............................ 23 Anterior Open Bite................................. 24 Posterior Open Bite................................ 25 Reverse Curve Smile............................... 26 Midline Diastema..................................... 27 Anterior Cross Bite.................................. 28 Posterior Cross Bite................................ 29

19

Class II Bites These bites are characterized by the lower teeth being set back relative to the lower teeth. Research shows that the cause of a Class II bite in approximately 80% of patients is a lower jaw that is set back, i.e. mandibular retrusion. The current orthodontic literature does not support routine early treatment for these patients and most of these patients can be treated in a single phase of treatments once all permanent teeth have erupted. However, there are merits to early treatment in some of the more severe Class II cases. The case illustrated shows a significant Class II case in which the lower jaw is set back relative to the upper jaw. This patient was treated with a single phase of orthodontic treatment, in accordance with the prevailing orthodontic literature, and had an excellent outcome.

20

Class II Bites Surgical Some Class II cases involve a lower jaw that is set back so far that surgical advancement of the jaw proves necessary. The case illustrated shows a patient treated with a combination of orthodontics and mandibular advancement surgery. Our office has a great deal of experience treating surgical orthodontic cases are are proud to work with outstanding oral & maxillofacial surgeons.

21

Class III Bites These bites are characterized by the lower teeth being too far forward relative to the upper teeth. These cases can be caused by a lower jaw that is too far forward, and upper jaw that is set too far back, or a combination of the two. The case illustrated shows a Class III patient treated successfully with orthodontic treatment.

22

Class III Bites Surgical Some Class III cases involve jaw discrepancy so severe that surgical intervention is necessary. The case illustrated shows a Class III patient treated with a combination of orthodontics and surgery of both jaws.

23

Anterior Open Bite This bite is characterized by a lack of overlap between the upper and lower front teeth.

24

Posterior Open Bite This bite is characterized by back teeth that do not contact each other, i.e. there is a space between the upper and lower back teeth.

25

Reverse Curve Smile Quality orthodontic treatment involves much more than just straightening teeth. An optimal smile requires proper positioning of the upper front teeth relative to the face, lips, and relative to each other. This case illustrates a “reverse curve” smile in which the upper cuspids (“eye teeth”) are lower than the incisors and asymmetry between the incisors (“front teeth”) exists. This arrangement causes the cuspids to appear too prominent and creates an illusion of lack of curvature to the smile. The “after” photo shows ideal positioning of the upper front teeth and a very pleasing smile. Achieving these results requires meticulous attention to detail and a proper understanding of esthetic parameters.

26

Midline Diastema Many patients present with a large space between the upper front teeth and this is termed a “diastema. This case illustrates successful closure of the midline diastema and a very pleasing smile.

27

Anterior Cross Bite The term “anterior cross bite refers to a situation in which an upper front tooth is positioned behind a lower front tooth. This can be caused by errors in tooth position, errors in jaw position, or both.

28

Posterior Cross Bite The term “posterior cross bite” refers to a situation in which the upper back teeth are positioned inside the lower back teeth. This can be caused by errors in tooth position, width discrepancies involving one or both jaws, or a combination. This case illustrates a posterior crossbite in which the upper back teeth are set inside of the lower back teeth. This case was caused by a narrow upper jaw/palate and was corrected by expanding the upper jaw. This case also illustrates a scenario in which “early” orthodontic treatment was indicated to create adequate space for permanent tooth eruption, eliminate an unstable shift of the lower jaw, and to minimize the risk of premature tooth wear.

29

Ortho Restorative Many patients present with complex tooth and bite problems that require a true team approach. Dr. Rosenzweig especially enjoys treating these multi-disciplinary cases and is currently active in two multi-disciplinary study clubs (Seattle Study Club and Spear Advanced Education Study Club). This case illustrates a patient with a destructive bite (lower arch of teeth too far forward relative to upper teeth and upper front teeth collide hard against lower front teeth), significant tooth wear, and the upper left front tooth has failed with extraction required.

30

Working closely with a top notch restorative dentist and implant surgeon, an appropriate treatment plan was established. Orthodontic treatment was utilized to properly position the teeth and stabilize the bite. Following the orthodontic treatment, a dental implant was put in place of the extracted upper left front tooth. Finally, the upper front four teeth (one of which is a dental implant) were restored with beautiful porcelain restorations. The outcome of this case illustrates the importance of choosing the right team to handle complex cases. Our office is proud to work closely with the most outstanding dental providers in Central Oregon.
