As we look forward to a new year, I am particularly proud of the ways we have grown our community through our Membership programs like the Wild Bunch and Premier Memberships, strengthening our relationships with our supporters through community service efforts and unique experiences. Through partnerships with generous sponsors, relationships with our loyal members and the support of our fans, we have been able to make wonderful impacts both locally and internationally. Our Education programs continue to grow and inspire the next generation of wildlife protectors and conservationists through engaging activities and lessons. All the while, we continue to celebrate successful animal births, like the historic birth of a two-toed sloth, and bring exciting new adventures to our zoo guests. In 2020, Zoo Miami will be bringing back Dinosaurs LIVE!, presented by Metro by T Mobile. This traveling exhibit will feature many lifesized, animatronic dinosaurs throughout the zoo, inviting guests on a wild Jurassic adventure. Impressive and awe-inspiring as these life-like creatures may be, they will also serve as a reminder for us to learn from the past to save the species of tomorrow. As our planet is currently experiencing its 6th Mass Extinction, it is more important than ever to focus on our conservation mission, dedicating crucial efforts to protecting our wildlife and their habitats. Our team at Zoo Miami and Zoo Miami Foundation remain steadfast in our efforts, encouraged by the impact of our growing community and our efforts to inspire and educate. We thank each and every member of the Zoo Miami family, and look forward to the impacts we will continue to make together.

ZOO MIAMI & FIU LAND NATIONAL FUNDING FOR UNDERGRAD RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES Zoo Miami, Zoo Miami Foundation and FIU have teamed up to expand conservation research opportunities for undergrad college students! The joint effort has been awarded a three-year, $378,000 Research Experiences for Undergraduate Site grant from the National Science Foundation. We are the first zoo to receive such an award! The grant will provide opportunities for FIU students and others from colleges across the US to gain experience conducting independent research in conservation biology at Zoo Miami. Ten students will be accepted each year during the summers of 2020, 2021, and 2022. The program hopes to recruit students from minority groups underrepresented in science careers and students from universities with limited exposure to research. 5

Not-so-scary fact: Bats are responsible for the pollination of over 300 species of fruit! They help to spread seeds for things like nuts, figs and even cacao – that’s right, the main ingredient in chocolate. (Imagine a Halloween without chocolate – now THAT’s a scary thought!)

Not-so-scary fact: Owls are farsighted, so they actually have trouble seeing things that are very close to their eyes.

Halloween Critters Year-round, these living symbols of Halloween can be found right here at Zoo Miami. Some may find them creepy and crawly, but the more you get to know them, the less scary they can be!

SLOTH IN BORN Zoo Miami

His tory 8

!

On July 16, 2019, Zoo Miami celebrated the historic birth of a two-toed sloth, the very first to be born at our zoo!

DID YOU KNOW?

This new member of our zoo family is the first baby for three-year-old mom "Marge," who arrived to us in October 2016. The father, "Montey," is just a month older than Marge and arrived to us in October 2016 as well. This is also his first baby! At birth, the newborn sloth was estimated to weigh just under a pound. Its gender remains unknown, as it’s very difficult to determine, especially in infants. Marge and her baby have been off-exhibit, taking time to properly bond in a “maternity ward” as the zoo staff monitors the baby’s development.

Sloths are considered one of the slowest animals on Earth, moving only about six feet a minute on the ground and slightly faster in the trees. However, they are great swimmers! 9

Reclaimed Earth, Inc., a non-profit dedicated to the conservation and repopulation of endangered species, recently teamed up with Zoo Miami Foundation (ZMF) and the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment to deliver books and gifts to school children in South Africa as part of an awareness project! Yvette Ayala, founder of Reclaimed Earth, is also a member of the Wild Bunch at ZMF and partnered with us to purchase 40 Adopt an Animal packages, each including Zoo 3D Albums generously donated by the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment. Within Reclaimed Earth’s projects, they are committed to raising awareness and harmony with the communities impacting endangered wildlife. For many of the school children they visited, the plush animals in their gift boxes were their first encounter with their native wildlife.

A Big, Special Thank You to…

The Kirk Foundation has renewed its support of our Animal Fun Factory, a unique artistic science program that engages young people in making enrichment items for Zoo Miami’s animals! From October 2019 – May 2020, the Animal Fun Factory will welcome Miami Dade public and private school K-12 students and weekend zoo visitors.

ZMF is partnering with Publix Super Markets Charities to expand our impact and take the Zoo to schools in Broward County, increasing awareness of the interrelationship of man and the environment and encourage conservation action. Our goal is to enhance school lessons by providing an opportunity to increase scientific knowledge of environmental science topics and develop critical thinking skills through first hand experiences and project-based learning. 15

BIG CAT CHECK-UPS

One of Zoo Miami’s top priorities and source of pride is the care we take to ensure that our animals are healthy and happy. In the wild, animals will often instinctively hide any health issues they may have to avoid being challenged or targeted by predators. So, preventative exams are often the only way to discover illness or disease in our animals before it reaches an advanced stage! Recently, a couple of our big cats visited the Animal Hospital for “check-ups.”

On July 15, Zoo Miami’s approximately five-yearold Florida panther, “Mahala,” was immobilized and underwent a routine physical as part of the Animal Health Department’s preventative medicine program. Mahala received a general overall body condition exam, blood and urine collection, radiographs, a dental inspection, and the insertion of an implant to aid in her reproductive health! She was found to be in excellent condition and was able to return to her habitat quickly. On July 30, our nine-year-old, 144-pound male jaguar, “Adonia,” received a general physical examination, which included blood and urine collection, x-rays, an ultrasound and an endoscopy of the digestive tract, plus an in-depth dental exam! Performing the dental exam was one of the nation’s top veterinary dentists, Dr. Jamie A. Berning, who came all the way from Ohio to donate her time to performing various dental procedures on several of our animals. Zoo Miami’s veterinary team of Dr. Gwen Myers, Dr. Jimmy Johnson, Dr. Gaby Flacke, and Dr. Marisa Bezjian, worked together with Dr. Berning overseeing Adonia’s anesthesia while they performed the other procedures. 18

FISCAL YEAR 2019 IN REFLECTION This month marks the beginning of a new fiscal year for us at Zoo Miami Foundation (ZMF) and it is with great pride that we reflect on all that we have achieved over the last year. For five years in a row, ZMF has been awarded the prestigious 4-Star Charity Navigator Rating, and this year, we’ve also been named “Non-Profit of the Year” by the Chamber South Business Excellence Awards. Serving as acknowledgements that our organization exceeds industry standards and executes our mission with financial efficiency, these awards are a testament to the dedication of ZMF staff and volunteers.

Jose Romano Chair

On behalf of the ZMF Board of Directors, I am more confident than ever in our organization’s dedication to wildlife conservation and the growth of Zoo Miami. This year, our Board held a two-day retreat at the zoo to focus on improving our support for Zoo Miami. We set in place a three-year strategic plan for ZMF. We took on three major fundraising projects; Phase 1 of a new Animal Hospital at Zoo Miami, a new Conservation Action Center, and the addition of a nose-to-nose experience at the tiger exhibit. I am also proud to say that we approved a $200,000 donation to support sea turtle conservation efforts. These efforts will help us continue to strengthen our support and care for wildlife, both inside the zoo and out. Of course, our impact truly flourishes with the help of our supporters. From our loyal members and dedicated staff to our generous sponsors and partners, ZMF is truly fortunate to have such a committed community to count on. Every person and partner play a vital role in our mission. Thanks to many individual donors, ZMF set a record this fiscal year for Give Miami Day donations, bringing in over $70,000! Thanks to the generous support of the Gail S. Posner Trust & Sanford J. Schlesigner, Trustee, we’ve been able to totally revitalize the Australia lobe of Zoo Miami. Meanwhile, ZMF’s Learning Experiences Department continues to grow each year, implementing wonderful programming to engage our community. This year, we were thrilled that our adult volunteer numbers grew to a record-high 169 active adult volunteers! Our volunteers are truly dedicated people who help us support zoo operations and educate Zoo Miami’s guests every day. Meanwhile, we are bringing the “Zoo to You” educational outreach programs to schools and groups outside of the zoo! A big thanks to Mercedes-Benz of Cutler Bay and Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables for their generous donation of a dedicated Mercedes Metris van for these programs. Each year, Zoo Miami Foundation makes strides toward our mission of fostering community pride and involvement with Zoo Miami, and maximizing our impact on conservation efforts, both locally and globally. As we enter this new fiscal year, equipped with the support of our community and the dedication of our organization, I am confident in our ability to lengthen those strides. I look forward to leading our Board of Directors to play our role in the growth of Zoo Miami and ZMF’s evolution, and I cannot wait to see what we accomplish this year. Jose C. Romano Zoo Miami Foundation Chairman
