A

fter a 23-year career as a commercial studio photographer in Toronto, having graduated from the photography program at Ryerson, I found myself in Vancouver in 1994, looking for a complete lifestyle change. My curiosity about computers led me to try on a new hat in graphic design. Desktop publishing was still in its infancy when I received the opportunity to work with Photoshop 3, and that introduced me to the digital era in photography. I bought my first DSLR in 2005, a Canon 20D. It was a far cry from the quality of my 6x7 Mamiya RZ, but something told me digital photography was my future and that image quality would improve with each succeeding camera update. I have not been disappointed.

“AS A PHOTOGRAPHER WHO IS FASCINATED BY THE DIVERSITY AND WONDER OF THIS PLANET I AM NURTURED BY THE SUBJECTS I PHOTOGRAPH AND JOURNEYS I TAKE . . .” British Columbia opened my eyes to a new appreciation of landscape photography. Flat fields of Ontario farmland gave way to tall trees, majestic mountains, and the deep blue ocean. I bought a 13”x19” Epson printer and began printing images for sale in craft shows. The Sunshine Coast called me in 2009. and with my love of hiking and carrying a camera, I was soon showing my photography here as well. I’ve always been an intuitive empath who easily picks up the energy of people and nature. When I photograph a tree, I feel that energy, which I allow my camera to record. Photography is not an ordinary experience for me; I have the desire to capture the essence of that subject. I don’t need a substance to feel “stoned” on life. I get high photographing a rushing stream in Cliff Gilker Park, feeling the fast water flowing through me. Chapman Creek waterfalls is a torrent of delight after heavy rains. new year 2019

Photography is no longer something I chase. Looking for the perfect shot doesn’t interest me. Composing an image is a source of nourishment and as such can’t be hurried. Like a tasty meal, it needs to be savoured and enjoyed. How can one define what a perfect image even looks like? Everyone has a different perspective. I can only shoot for myself and hope someone else likes it. That might not always be so, but what difference does that make? Initially our images provide joy to the photographer. Sharing them is what brings pleasure, but who knows if you will like my vision? There was a time when that was important to me, when photography was my career, and if I didn’t please a client, my bank account would suffer. That is no longer the case. It is the rapture of the process that keeps me going. I love the eclectic. Within any moment, I may be attracted to a subject that I would never have considered. I am as content photographing a black and white nude as a sensuous flower or a powerful waterfall. I hate categories and labels. For me, life contains a multitude of expressions waiting to be captured in the name of art. Life, in fact, is art perfect in every detail. How can one not fail to see the sublime beauty of Mother Earth? As a photographer who is fascinated by the diversity and wonder of this planet, I am nurtured by the subjects I photograph and journeys I take that open up possibilities for creating works of art.

THROW MAMA FROM THE BOAT AND OTHER FERRY TALES

Thirteen short stories set on the ferries that ply British Columbia’s inland waterways. These ‘ferry tales” explore realities that lie just beyond our usual daily lives. In this alternate cosmos, elderly mothers disappear (or do they?), wolves aspire to be human, death is encountered and possibly overcome, creatures out of classical mythology and fairy tales are half-seen out of the corner of at least one eye, and people are more (and less) than what they seem.

MINIMAL, POWERFUL, THERE IS A FRIENDLY, ALMOST HELPFUL SORT OF AUSTERITY TO THESE PIECES.

T

his gorgeous black stoneware and porcelain will stop you in your tracks. Minimal but powerful, there is a friendly, almost helpful sort of austerity to these pieces. It’s easy to imagine that a few of them in your home might be the catalyst for a householdwide calming and decluttering. Maybe the Zen is contagious! And of course, potter Beth Hawthorn does feel that having lived in Japan for a year in her early twenties influenced her taste. She describes a strong attraction for the “sense of restraint and love for minimalism” she found there. She has been involved in the business of creating for many years, but recently circled back to pottery, one of her first loves. Introduced to clay in high school, back in the days when school arts programs were thriving and really gave young people a taste of creative life, she discovered a talent that was encouraged by mentors and instructors. She followed her passion into college, but then life happened. “Working in clay requires a good sense of timing and flow. Being a mom of two young kids, I found time to pull out the clay for them to play, but didn’t make the time for myself to do it to the extent I would have liked. So my wheel and clay sat in storage. I knew there would be a time when it was going to come back into my life. Well, this is the time, and it has come back with a great surge of energy.” Hawthorn is drawn to neutral colours and the extremes of the black and white forms, glazed and unglazed. Her work is quite transfixing. The creamy almost ethereal white porcelain contrasts with the elemental, from-the bowels-of-the-earth impression of the black clay. She loves how viewers respond. “People are really drawn to the black clay and they immediately reach out to touch the pieces. The white clay feels cloud-like, and in contrast, the black clay feels very much like it is from the earth. Black offers a sweet mix between a modern style and yet still has an earthy feel. It seems to appeal to both men and women.” Hawthorn has lived in Roberts Creek for twelve years and has been working in craft and design for more than twenty years. She divides her creative time between rolling up her sleeves in her ceramics studio and working on her computer (another contrast) at her freelance graphic design and branding business.

eady to feel disarmed and invigorated all at once? Enter Om Rituals, home of Roots & Roses Apothecary, located in a studio space at The Kube in Gibsons. Chloe Mckinnon, owner and operator, aka The Tea Lady, is “such a calming and inspiring presence,” says one of her studio mates.

Influenced by her move to the Sunshine Coast three years ago, landing on a hobby farm and given her own garden to tend (plus some heartfelt guidance), Chloe took a herbal medicine-making course. In this time she also took a trip to Bali, Indonesia, and experienced an openness with the people there. She saw that a life steeped in devotion and connection to the divine, or nature as she would call it, is “a life lived with simplicity, honour, and beauty.” In the Apothecary you will find a variety of “healthy teas that taste good.” Unique to her Essential Elements Collection, each blend has a special note on the benefits of the plants in relationship to an organ of the body. All blends are hand-mixed with organic herbs. You will also find bulk herbs, garden smudge bouquets made from home-grown plants and flowers, herbal-infused essential oil blends, bath botanicals, and medicine bundles that include rituals designed to “soften the heart and soothe the soul.” Om Rituals offers an assortment of services, including plant-based workshops at The Kube Studios, tea ceremonies for “practising presence by sharing tea in a meditative manner,” and Ayurvedic head massage—warm Roots & Roses essential oils massaged into the scalp to release tension and blockages in the head, neck, and face. Chloe has grown her business from the ground up and continues to develop a naturally sensual product line. Through Om Rituals, Chloe extends the invitation to attune to your innate wisdom and build wellness from within. Chloe’s deepest intention is to re-ignite the art of devotion by connecting people with plants.

IMAGE | ROGER HANDLING

On the Sunshine Coast we love books. You can’t swing a gumboot here without hitting an author, and our Festival of the Written Arts has just celebrated its 36th successful year. Here we appreciate books from both sides of the cover. And we also appreciate the covers! Printed books can be a tough sell these days, though, with technology changing our habits, inclinations, and even our attention spans. This means the look of the book matters a great deal. The title, the colour, the print, the size, the font, the images on front and back . . . all influence what gets picked up and what gets passed over. ZOOM talked to Roger Handling, Creative Director of Terra Firma Digital Arts. You know his work. It is everywhere: brochures, pamphlets, for resorts and real estate, government, tourism, hospitality, on the web, and in print. If it is eye-catching, there is an excellent chance Roger has been involved. Book covers might well be Handling’s favourite work. “I’ve been a bibliophile ever since I was a kid, as well as a compulsive drawer. My parent’s house was full of books. Being able to combine my penchant for visual expression and creativity with a medium I’ve always spent so much time immersed in is rather satisfying.” Handling has been responsible for many non-fiction covers such as Fishing For A Living by Alan Haig-Brown, Forestopia by Michael M’Gonigle, and The Sea Among Us by Richard Beamish and Gordon McFarlane. He also enjoys the challenge of dreaming up covers for fiction titles. A recent and extremely local example is Throw Mama from the Boat and other Ferry Tales, a set of quirky, dark, funny short stories by Gibsons author PJ Reece. This new book has proved very popular, and Reece has observed how a great cover works on shoppers. “Firstly, it’s a title rendered large and clear, with no fancy fonts . . . (It) almost invariably evokes a chuckle (from women especially—what’s that about?). If the title proves juicy bait, the cover illustration does the rest.” The cover illustration is decidedly eye-catching. We’re at water level. Above, it seems to be day’s end, and we’re bobbing in our familiar waters in the wake of a ferry, along with a woman and her luggage. Under water, her high heels are what particularly catch the eye. Reece continues: “A woman flounders in a ferry’s wake—it’s horrendous. Who would throw their beloved mama overboard? No one. It’s absurd, it’s outrageous. That’s why Handling’s illustration works. The high heels and the seagull hitching a ride on her luggage are two more clues about what kind of book this is.”

Handling shares the myriad considerations, even when the author is happy to give a fairly free rein. “PJ pretty well left me to explore my own direction after an initial discussion to confirm mood and content. We agreed the location needed to be identifiably Lower Mainland BC, having a ferry included was preferable, and it begged for a bit an ominous tone. The rest emerged as I played with ideas and images. Finding the right perspective for the ferry shot was crucial, as it had to allow me to work with the split under-water/above-water view.” Absurdity is tricky. It takes a light touch to avoid ghoulishness, or cloying silliness. Handling continues: “We didn’t want it to look like someone was drowning, rather just swimming, so I veered away from a completely submerged figure. I felt that hiding the lady’s face would remove potential confusion as to her thoughts . . . which is where the floating luggage idea came from. Plus the idea of not just throwing your mama from the ferry but her luggage too was rather amusing. And finally the seagull added that touch of humour.”

Handcrafted on the Sunshine Coast

4-626 Shaw Rd, Gibsons (down the lane way) 604-886-2079 www.lapetitesouris.ca

Reece has written several books on story structure and has given a lot of thought to the psychological considerations of successful storytelling. “More importantly, the cover promises the reader they’ll get their money’s worth—because all good fiction includes the threat of non-existence. From William Faulkner’s When I Lay Dying to Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird to Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, we want stories that take us down to where a radical change of heart is non-negotiable. We have to be a little afraid of what’s between the covers. And just like that, the book browser picks up the book to look inside to see how deeply into the dark this book dives. There’s a book cover that’s done its job. Thank you, Roger Handling.”

COASTAL VOICES 20

COMMUNITY IS BUILT ON STORIES AND COASTAL VOICES IS A BEAUTIFUL EXPRESSION OF THAT NOTION.

C

elebration of Authors, Books and Community (CABC), a joint initiative of the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts and School District No. 46 (Sunshine Coast), brings professional writers and storytellers into Sunshine Coast classrooms to inspire and support student development as readers, writers, and storytellers. Since the program’s inception in 2007, more than seventy Canadian writers have visited Coast classrooms, working with thousands of students, providing them with the tools and inspiration to write and tell their own stories. The program culminates with the publication of Coastal Voices, an annual adjudicated anthology of writing by budding novelists, poets, and essayists. At a yearly event, students take to the stage to read their works, giving our young people a voice, building confident and empowered youth, cultivating future generations of thinkers and writers, and ensuring a legacy of literacy. This project has been supported since the beginning by ZOOM and its publisher, Edmund Arceo, who has provided his time in designing the anthologies. It is said that community is built on stories, and Coastal Voices is a beautiful expression of that notion. There is a transformative power in sharing a story that is heard. Beloved Ojibway author and storyteller Richard Wagamese, who visited the Sunshine Coast and our schools a number of times, said it best. “We change the world, one story at a time.” Sunshine Coast students in grades K to 12 are invited to submit their work for the ninth edition of Coastal Voices, to be published in June 2019. Work can be submitted via classroom teachers or directly to John Lussier at Roberts Creek Elementary School.

THE

KUBE

The Sunshine Coast is awash with creativity and talent. We’ve got musicians, artists, and writers coming out of the woodwork. Yet for creative types, it can be lonely here, lonely for both those whose careers are in full swing and those who are learning and taking their first steps in a new creative direction. The things we love about our setting—the uncrowded coastline, the forests, the space—also mean isolation: studios at the end of long wooded driveways, limited behindthe-scenes conviviality, very little late-night café and drinks culture, and long distances between communities. The Kube aims to help. WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE

Jill Pilon and Jody Youngren come from the buzz of the city. Jill is an artist herself and was on the board of the Eastside Culture Crawl. Her involvement in that popular Vancouver event exposed her to numerous examples of how the right vibe and proximity can energize artists. She now occupies one of the eleven studios The Kube hosts. Jody has worked in graphic and media design for decades and co-owned a design studio in Gastown. Together, Jill and Jody recognized the need for a space that would foster creative synergy and focus on contemporary art.

Jody says, “Jill felt that having proper working artist studios would be a huge asset to our community here on the Coast. Having a focused creative space for an artist/maker not only helps develop and hone your own skills but also allows for the artists to feed off of each other’s creative energy.”

The Kube has studios, gallery, marketing reach and assistance (online and off), and what they call “thoughtfully curated retail” in upper Gibsons, near to condos, cafés, and pubs. Studio rental ranges from $160–260 per month and includes 24-hour access, security, and shared washroom and kitchenette. The Kube schedules a new art opening on the first Friday of each month. They even do birthday parties. The artistic community has responded with enthusiasm. There is currently a waiting list for studio space. Katie Sweeting, co-founder of Barter Design, describes her experience showing at The Kube. “They foster a community within their walls because of local artists they bring in, workshops, and events. A strong creative energy—not your typical retail environment. Feels more like a sacred gallery space/living room.”

THE VIEW his issue’s View takes us into the heart of the Pender Harbour area’s intricate waterways. Taken from just to the left of the Painted Boat Resort, on the ground by foot you’d be a short scenic walk into Madeira Park. From up in the air, clean blue water, islets, and trees still dominate, but here we see the layout of resorts, docks, and boathouses too. This is one of the most protected areas of our shoreline. This means tricky navigation for boaters who must pay close attention to tides. It also means biodiversity. Mark Brezer, who operates SloCat Harbour Tours, knows these waters well. “ . . . the shallows in Whiskey Slough experience up to a 17-foot tide. The brackish waters and lagoons draw an abundance of wildlife, from crabs combing the tideline and sea asparagus to the eagles eyeing opportunities.” That’s Coho Marina Resort in the middle, with Mary Islet beyond, Dusenbury and Calder islands to the left. Mount Daniel, Harbour Peak, and Pender Hill are in the background, reminding us how lucky we are that a moderate hike will get us such views! Thank you to Laurent Wiese and Sky Drone Aerial Photography for the shot. new year 2019

he next time you go to a concert or arts event at St. Hilda’s, look up. You can’t help but notice the new sanctuary’s three beautiful steel supports, each unified by a burnished circle. They are minimal yet industrial, expressing the simple modernity of the space. They also serve a symbolic purpose: representing how members of the community came together to rebuild this historical and cultural hub. Over its 32-year lifespan, St. Hilda’s sanctuary has been a prime venue for concerts and cultural events. The room’s large, airy windows let in tranquil woodland views—for church- and concert- goers alike. High ceilings contribute to lovely, resonant acoustics. But two years ago, an inspection for a minor wall repair revealed that the sanctuary walls were leaning out, having, over time, been pushed out by a roof that lacked proper supports. Further inspection revealed inferior building materials. The sanctuary would need rebuilding.

Mobius Architecture and Spani Developments took great care to honour the church’s Christian tradition and its values of inclusion and community. With every generation, St. Hilda’s strives to further these values. “This new space was designed to represent our vision,” explains Reverend Clarence Li. “The architecture and building teams understood that this is not only a church but a community sacred space.” Overhead, the roof supports reflect the Christian trinity and circular themes, and they were designed to not obstruct the verdant views through the windows. A requirement to provide further structural stabilization resulted in a new “west transept,” a side extension of the sanctuary that offers both structural support and a new extra space for community groups to meet. Reverend Li has felt blessed by the community’s response and participation. “Usually projects like these are supported only by the members of the church, which, to some extent, is our case as well. But what was particularly wonderful here was receiving affirmation from the wider community when we let them know this was happening.” The church’s Restoration Capital Campaign book records the countless companies, their staff, subcontractors, the public, and church members who contributed effort, skill, and financial support. Several contributions made by the project’s subcontractors were free or donated in-kind.

THE ARCHITECTURE AND BUILDING TEAMS UNDERSTOOD THAT THIS IS NOT ONLY A CHURCH BUT A COMMUNITY SACRED SPACE. Though there has been much generosity, the project is still short of raising the entire $1.3 million cost. A gala fundraising event will take place March 10 and feature community musicians and friends. The 16-month-long restoration process is one that Reverend Li and the congregation of St. Hilda’s will treasure. “It was a very powerful experience of learning to examine the essentials of who we are as a community, to watch the resilience, and also see the outpouring of support from the wider community,” he says. Inspired, the church has begun a feasibility study to determine options for redeveloping the rest of the property to better uplift and serve the Sunshine Coast.

ST. HILDA’S ANGLICAN CHURCH IS LOCATED AT 5838 BARNACLE STREET IN SECHELT. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THEIR RESTORATION CAPITAL CAMPAIGN AND ONGOING PROGRAMS AND SERVICES, VISIT STHILDA.CA.

A 6,000-KM DRIVE FROM ROBERTS CREEK TO CELESTÚN, MEXICO, WAS JUST THE BEGINNING OF AN ENVIABLE ADVENTURE

A

s you stand looking out from Jess and Nicolas Meyer’s Playa 55 Boutique Guesthouse in Yucatán, Mexico, past the warm sandy beaches, overlooking the vast waters of the Gulf of Mexico, you find what you have been looking for . . . your breath.

A few years ago, Jess and Nicolas, long-time residents of Roberts Creek, set out to find a quiet spot in Mexico to buy a “fixer-upper” and create a place to relax and return year after year. They discovered Mérida, Mexico. The beautiful, cultural capital of the Americas appealed to them. They decided to take a five-day trip to see what this area was about and look at properties, including beach communities. Nothing was jumping out at them until, as fate would have it, they happened to stumble across an empty place in nearby Celestún, right on the beach. WORDS | NATALIE FINDLAY

32

PHOTOGRAPHY | NICOLAS MEYER

With a sideways glance at each other, it was love at first sight—with the building, that is. The surprise was, it was an empty ten-room hotel, not the small fixer-upper they initially had in mind. But they loved everything about it. It took another two years to sort out the legalities and multiple discussions about whether they should just abandon everything, but they stayed the course and created an enchanting guesthouse that has just opened for its first full season. An hour’s drive from the airport in Mérida, you arrive at this small fishing village where you can do as much or as little as you like. This place isn’t overrun with tourists like other Mexican destinations. And therein lies its magic. Celestún exudes the authentic feeling of the people, a place that invites you to slow down and be present in each moment, a place that whispers to your soul, “It’s okay, let it all go, I’ve got you.” While enjoying the pleasures of slowing down, the area still moves to its own beat. You can explore the unique UNESCO-designated bio-reserve around Celestún. Spend the day fishing, explore the mangroves, watch flamingos close up. Also on the list of outings not to miss: the ancient Mayan city of Uxmal, a refreshing swim in one of the many cenotes, a visit to Isla Arena, haciendas, and don’t forget to ask for Jess and Nicolas’s favourite place for amazing Mexican food. With all this beauty and tranquility, Playa 55 and the Yucatán may leave you searching for a new home too.
