WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE
Look long at Bryce Barry’s eerie, atmospheric photos and you will forget where you are. It is dizzying, as if you’ve fallen into the setting, almost able to smell the sea and forest, feel the cool air, the damp moss, the ridged sand. To heighten this effect, Barry’s work is printed on archival grade paper that she hand-mounts on wood cradles, avoiding any gloss or glare, so nothing detracts from the impression of stillness and being there. Sechelt is Barry’s hometown. Her parents still live there, and it is her favourite place to shoot. “I’ve grown up on the Coast and shot there for years,” she says, “but still feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface.” Barry has seen a lot of the world, representing Canada for over a decade as a professional beach volleyball athlete. She journaled and took photos wherever she went. These travels opened her eyes to the world, honing her style and focus. She drew great inspiration from visiting places like the Mojave Desert, the Isle of Skye, and the Pyrenees. Drawn to minimalism, she has an instinct for the sorts of hushed, liminal scenes that make the viewer catch her breath.

“My favourite time to shoot is sunrise, everything is quiet and new, and the light is pretty fantastic too . . . A big part of what I strive to capture is stillness. I use minimalism as a guide, less noise, less fuss, give the scene more space, and if I’m lucky, that room creates some depth too.” Barry’s photo-mounting process took a few years to hone and involves several steps and a lot of patience, but she completely achieves her goal: to make the photo seem like “something the viewer can walk into.”
“A BIG PART 0F WHAT I STRIVE TO CAPTURE IS STILLNESS. I USE MINIMALISM AS A GUIDE, LESS NOISE, LESS FUSS . . .”

You can see Barry’s work at Plethora Fine Foods on Cowrie Street in Sechelt. She also does several shows throughout the year, and she is happy to arrange a studio tour. Her photos are collected locally and across Canada; some have even made it to the States. She enjoys working with businesses that commission her to create tranquil, inspiring pieces for their workspaces and clients. And how has the volleyball helped? Besides the eyeopening thrill of travel, Barry says touring exposed her to “fantastic architecture, design and culture.” And high-level sport of any kind always requires us to dig deep inside: “My drive, discipline and patience are definitely transferable to my business now.” VIEW MORE OF BRYCE BARRY’S PHOTOGRAPHY AT WWW.BRYCEBARRY.COM.

hat do you get when you mix aerialists, a zany script, expert sound effects, theatre, huge trees, awesome costumes, a long winding path, and anyone young or old or marginalized, especially anyone young or old or marginalized who wants to join the team? Oh, and give it a good stir so that it comes out different every time. You might get something like the Rainforest Circus. Chad Hershler and Sandy Buck are the brains, brawn, and spirit behind the Rainforest Circus and the nonprofit Deer Crossing The Art Farm. They’ve lived on the Coast since 2007. With a background in writing, acting, and theatre, Hershler loves stories, preferably live ones. Buck is a costume designer who worked for years in film/TV/theatre. They both have a passion for inclusivity, and together they are a formidable duo. Nature is always an important theme in these “forest theatre” productions, but big ideas and big emotions are always part of the mix. The 2015 “Cosmos” show, with its soundscapes, aerial “dancing,” and zany characters, was eerie, beautiful, funny, and memorable. Hershler has a knack for writing and acting wonderfully sophisticated, nervy soliloquies that juxtapose so well with the calm of ancient trees, really bringing the intensely human together with enduring Nature.
WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE
And when they say “inclusive,” it’s not just some kind of nod to political correctness and artspeak. Reaching out, getting feedback, educating, and involving the community are woven into every step of their process. They hold workshops and camps, set up displays at outdoor markets, and take their show on the road, last year to Esquimalt, Gabriola Island, and Malcolm Island. With their core cast, they team up with arts organizations in what they feel are “underserved” communities and invite the public. The result is a skeleton show that gets fleshed out a little differently in each place. How in the world do they pull it off? So many moving parts! So many considerations! “Time,” Hershler says, “you have to allow a lot of time.”
SURPRISES, WONDER & DELIGHT
RAINFOREST CIRCUS
This dynamic approach is so complex that it starts to be simple. He explains, “The outcome is important, but the process is equally important. You can’t compromise one for the other.” In this year’s “Submerged,” unexpected underwater creatures as an estranged couple have to go “deep” to resolve past issues. This sounds like rich territory for both Hershler’s insightful writing and Buck’s fantastic costumes.

orwest Bay Road Studio in West Sechelt houses two internationally established painters and is well worth a stop. These artists have a warm welcome for visitors. It can be said that an artist has really reached the top of his/her career when sharing is more important than anything else, and maybe that is part of the magical feeling at this studio. The work of Jennifer Goodwin and Carmelo Sortino has found homes all over the world, in private houses, galleries, and museums in places like Amsterdam, Seattle, Hawaii, New York, and Toronto. While they are relatively new to the Sunshine Coast (three years now in their home studio-with-a view in West Sechelt), they have strong connections in the wider world of art.
CARMELO SORTINO
Large, luscious, luminous fruit are Carmelo Sortino’s specialty. You won’t quickly forget the experience of standing in front of one of his human-proportioned Anjou pears, or lemons that seem to want to speak These are set upon simple backdrops that have been given fine painterly attention. Entirely self-taught, Sortino likes to challenge himself by doing studies of the works of famous painters. On the walls are vibrant sunflowers à la Van Gogh, rocks and icebergs à la Harris, and plates painted in the style of Pollack. He has also rendered beautiful, tender landscapes of his native Sicily. But the glorious fruit are what most delight Sortino’s collectors (and a lofty bunch they are, Bill Gates among them). Fruit WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE

as subject matter is fitting, since food is another of Sortino’s passions. He says he is at a stage in his creative life where he wants to share his experience and so gives classes to delighted adults and children. These classes often include a delicious Italian lunch that he cooks himself!
IT CAN BE SAID THAT AN ARTIST HAS REALLY REACHED THE TOP OF HIS/HER CAREER WHEN SHARING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANYTHING ELSE . . .
JENNIFER GOODWIN Goodwin’s gorgeous flowers will leave a lasting impression: calla lilies and tulips, gerberas and roses, some so lifelike as to seem truly 3-D, like sculpture. Some are more whimsical and playful. Often she will take a simple subject, a bunch of tulips for instance, and paint them from an unexpected angle, hanging upside down or from above. The effect is both masterful and playful as it invites the viewer to really look into the flowers and see the colours glowing from deep inside. Goodwin enjoys the quirky freedom of collage as well as painting. Around their home you will see some ceramic objects that might stop you in your tracks. That’s her work too. She was born in Liverpool, England, and has lived abroad. In Vancouver she studied at Emily Carr College and approaches her everyday subject matter with an evident worldliness and sense of appreciation.

GINA KUSUMA AT SIAM99: WHERE THE SPIRIT OF ELEPHANTS SHOWER KINDNESS & PROSPERITY
F
rom the hills of Northern Thailand to the waters of Madeira Park, Gina Kusuma Thongbai has brought a taste of her beautiful culture to the Sunshine Coast. August 1, 2017, was the official opening of Siam99. Now a year in, Gina’s passion for people and clothing, as well as her healing touch, have produced a successful business. The majority of her products are from her homeland. The bathing suits are from Bangkok. The hand-crafted wood pieces she carries are mostly teak from Chaing Mai and Lampang, and each has a story to tell through its design. Her clothing and accessories come from Northern Thailand, where she has also been partnering with a tailor to design unique clothing inspired from gorgeous Thai fabrics. Siam99’s yearly fashion show is an event not to be missed as it highlights the beautiful products she imports. Along with the retail store, Gina practices the art of Thai massage, a tradition passed down from her grandparents and mastered at the famous Wat Po Temple, where she learned the art from the monks. She is passionate about helping and healing people through massage, and it shows in her connection to those who come into the store. Siam99 also sells Thai coffee from the Hill tribes in Chaing Mai, allowing Gina to promote and give back to her home country. She carries locally made jewelry and SUP boards and has a medium who offers psychic readings in the store. As they say in Thailand, “khop khun ka,” “thank you,” Gina, for sharing your piece of Thailand with us. VISIT SIAM99 AT12808 MADEIRA PARK ROAD, MADEIRA PARK OR ONLINE - WWW.SIAM99.CA.

This year’s Power of Paint will be even more exciting than usual. This group of artists can be relied upon to delight the viewer with an array of high-quality work ranging from abstraction to impressionism, surrealism to folk art, a gathering and a collaboration of the best of the best of the Sunshine Coast. This annual show is so fabulous because the artists really make it an event. This year expect painting demonstrations, a guest artist showing 3-D work for the first time, and a brand-new, paint-barely-dry work from a themed “collaborative wall”(this year’s theme is “fish”). Proceeds go toward funding a bursary for art students on the Sunshine Coast. All this plus live music by Wanda Nowiki and Budge Schachte on Friday night. These established and successful artists are always evolving in their creative lives and practices.

THE POWER OF PAINT We talked to Morley Baker, an abstract painter, about his type of work. “Abstract painting is very different from all other art forms,” says Baker. “The artist begins with what is inside the mind and heart, not what is actually seen when observing the world around us. Are there rules? I hope not. Personally I strive for balance and energy and will paint, repaint, add and subtract until I ‘feel’ the piece is done. It is a very personal journey.”And how is Baker’s work different this year? “I started a new process whereby I take an original painting of mine out into the world and capture nature’s reflection in the painting using photography and reflective surfaces. This process combines both the abstract work and the reality of nature while remaining true to my abstract roots.” We’re looking forward to this much anticipated annual event. See you there!

ARTWORK | CHILDREN AGES 2 TO 4 ½ YEARS
xuberant, colourful, soulful, serene . . . The art created by the children of the mem7iman Child Development Centre speaks from the hearts of kids from 8 months to 4½ years. Look closely and you’ll see stars and swirls, sea and sky, animals. With the sea so close and outdoor time so accessible, we see kids’ imaginations blossom. From the centre’s website: “Our facility, complete with atelier (art studio), mini-longhouse, extensive vegetable garden, and beautiful outdoor playground, is located walking distance from the Sechelt coastline. Our program, which focuses on outdoor exploration and creative expression, strives to promote the physical, developmental, emotional, social, cultural, and spiritual well-being of our students.” Art is an important part of the play-based curriculum, and children are provided with a wide variety of art media and materials such as clay, collage materials, pastels, paints, and charcoals on a daily basis. This facilitates sensory exploration, self-expression, communication, and the development of symbolic thought. It’s never too soon to start really seeing. It’s never too soon to start sharing beauty with the world.

THE PENDER HARBOUR
CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL WORDS | THERESA KISHKAN
T
he third weekend in August marks the high point of summer for music lovers. This year’s 14th Pender Harbour Chamber Music Festival celebrates an intimate and warm conversation among musicians, among strings and bows and ivory keys, the human voice, audience members, and the complex alchemy of these things in a particular place: the School of Music in Madeira Park in its gracious setting. Think how dappled light and the lingering notes of a string quartet provoke rich response. Or how there is a moment of silence when the music ends while an audience collectively takes a breath before applause. As the great cellist Pablo Casals observed, “Music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic things to the heart.” The Festival opens August 17 with a free afternoon concert, “Til the Stars Fade from Above,” featuring this year’s Rising Tide, young and talented musicians playing selections from John Dowland’s sweet airs to Stephen Sondheim. Sarah Poon will play cello and viola da gamba, pianist David Poon will also bring a harpsichord to the stage, and two singers—soprano Lucy Smith and baritone Jacob Gramit—will join them. That evening, “A Higher Revelation” comes in the form of a lyrical Beethoven string quartet performed by the celebrated Lafayette String Quartet (violinists Ann Elliott-Goldschmid and Sharon Stanis, violist Joanna Hood, and cellist Pamela Highbaugh Aloni) and a Brahms piano quartet performed by violinist David Gillham, violist Yariv Aloni, cellist Brian Yoon, and pianist (and Festival Artistic Director) Alexander Tselyakov. The Festival cohort is complete when clarinetist Jenny Jonquil joins them on Saturday, August 18. The afternoon concert, “Shall We Dance?” explores a wide range of music from Haydn and Poulenc to the gorgeous tangos of Astor Piazzolla, with the late addition of Debussy’s “Clair de Lune.” Later that evening, the audience will experience “Two Views of Sunset,” a stunning program of pieces by Bruch, Menotti, and Schubert, concluding with the fiery String Quartet No.12 in D flat Major, Opus 16, by Dmitri Shostakovich. The grand closing will come on Sunday afternoon with “Make a Joyful Sound,” compositions by Mozart, Crusell, and Ernst von Dohnányi filling the venue overlooking the harbour with beautiful and memorable music. Alchemy, yes, and the hard work of our volunteers, the generosity of our Friends of the Festival and host families; their support makes this weekend of music possible. For more information, visit www.penderharbourmusic.ca. Tickets are available for purchase online or by calling 604.989.3995. The vibrant festival brochure with program details are available in many public locations.

AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY | LAURENT WIESE
he aerial photography of Laurent Wiese gives us clear pictures of why we love it here. Rock and forest, sea and inlet, lakes, mountains, and more lakes! His company, Sky Drone Aerial Photography, provides low-altitude, high-definition aerial imaging of our fantastic Coast. This is a booming business, valuable for everything from real estate and building site progress reports, to Search and Rescue, tourism, and archeology. The sky seems to be the limit!
This issue’s photo is near one of the most exciting and beautiful parts of the Coast, right beside Daniel Point, a real estate hotspot of gorgeous view homes, with more being built every year. It is very near Irvines Landing, where the PODS (Pender Harbour Ocean Discovery Station) development is taking shape, with exciting plans to enhance and contribute to nature, community, and culture. Wiese says of the area, “Also be aware that there are a couple more big houses today not shown in my aerial picture taken two years ago . . . The market has gone wild.”

The shot was taken at an altitude of about 400 ft and looks northeast. On the very left is the ocean, Agamemnon Channel in this case, with Nelson Island off the page but not much more than a stone’s throw to the left. That rocky bluff is shìshàlh Band land and the charming cove is the Sakinaw Lake outflow. In the background you see a glimpse of Sakinaw Lake and beyond that the Caren Range. If this photo makes you want get in a kayak and explore, the nearest launch place would be Lee Bay (on Lee Road), or over at Irvines Landing.

B
eautifully rugged yet relaxing, the Sunshine Coast is an idyllic outdoor paradise with a laid-back feel. Calm, driftwood-strewn beaches, ocean adventure, and lush, rainforest hiking and biking await—right off the main highway and beyond. First stop, the beach. As soon as you step off the ferry at either south or north ends, you can smell the easing salt air. Beach time on the Sunshine Coast is a must, and it’s a part of everyday life for locals, whether for the whole day, a few hours, or just an after-dinner dog run. There’s nothing like a beach campfire and sunset to truly appreciate the tranquility of the Coast. And that’s just a start. Grab a paddle and experience the serenity of the Sunshine Coast from off-shore. Launch your own kayak, paddleboard, or canoe, or rent one from a nearby outfitter. An unhurried day trip allows plenty of time to gaze in wonder at mountainous landscapes, delight in small-town views, and discover remote, sandy beaches and islands along the way. Past Sechelt is lake country, inviting paddlers to the picturesque waters of Trout, Ruby, and Klein Lakes to name a few. Many of these have family-friendly picnic and campsite grounds as well. Covering over 1570 kilometres, the evergreen rainforests of the Sunshine Coast offer a plethora of hiking and biking trails. From Cliff Gilker Park’s gentle paths to Mt. Daniel’s awe-inspiring views at 440 metres up, hiking takes you through sweet-smelling pine groves and beautifullytwisted, peeling arbutus. Take a moment to look up at the towering verdant canopy above and luxuriate in the stillness around you. Mountain bikers test their mettle at Sprockids Park—located just off the Highway 101 bypass in Gibsons. In Porpoise Bay, the nationally-renowned Coast Gravity Park entices bikers of all ages and skill levels. Options for outdoor adventure do abound, but the Sunshine Coast also has an ever-growing culture and food scene. From Gibsons to Lund, an enticing collection of eateries, watering holes, quaint shops, and local galleries contribute to the area’s easygoing West Coast vibe. Grab a patio seat at one of the Coast’s city-calibre establishments with a local craft brew in hand and coastal splendour as your ambience. In summer, festivals and community events happen nearly every weekend. The annual summer mandala painting in Roberts Creek is like a rite of passage and you won’t find a community event that’s quite like it. Wherever your itinerary takes you, the Sunshine Coast’s natural beauty and casual atmosphere will refresh your spirits and calm your soul. summer 2018

BARTER GIVES US WHAT WE NEED AND ONLY WHAT WE NEED: HAND-MADE, REAL MATERIALS, DESIGNED FOR SIMPLICITY, DURABILITY AND THE OPPOSITE OF EXCESS.
I
f you spend some time on Barter’s website—www.barterdesign.ca—you will actually feel yourself relaxing a little. That’s because in one thoughtful, heartfelt, canny effort, Barter effectively addresses our uneasy relationship with stuff. In a world where everything, everything—cars, appliances, clothing, furniture, toys even our homes—starts to seem junky, disposable, and designed for obsolescence and the indigestion of our landfills, Barter gives us what we need and only what we need: handmade, real materials designed for simplicity, durability, and the opposite of excess. Barter was founded by Kenneth Torrance and Katie Sweeting. In their words, “Because we wanted to create a design company strong in community. Kenneth designed a line that was based on our BC materials that could tell a story in every object of local place and people.”
BARTER DESIGN
Katie and Kenneth moved to the Sunshine Coast four years ago from Fort Langley, to build a family home in the forest. They are part of a strong and transforming wave of younger people coming here to raise families and use their skills and energy to take their dreams beyond idealism. “We moved to the Sunshine Coast to be part of a craft-based community within nature. We now have many of our products manufactured on the Sunshine Coast (beeswax candles, clay bowls, wooden stools, to name a few).

“KATIE NAMED OUR COMPANY BARTER BECAUSE SHE HAD A NOSTALGIC VISION OF PEOPLE COMING TOGETHER IN A VILLAGE TO TRADE GOODS, VISIT AND SHARE HARVESTS AND KNOWLEDGE” Kenneth’s goal as a designer is to celebrate and showcase the materials behind each product. Simplistic, minimalist design, all local material. As we grow, we also want to seek out collaborations with other craftspeople that align with our values.” Barter’s products satisfy the treehouse furnisher in each of us, using materials we could point to and identify right outside our doors: real wood, such as red alder and red cedar, real clay, real wool, repurposed rope. All with the sleek, space-conscious design that is perfect for contemporary homes of any size. They sell their wares online all over North America and are excited to be showing at the Kube in Gibsons. The name, Barter, is based on a dream: “Katie named our company Barter because she had a nostalgic vision of people coming together in a village to trade goods, visit and share harvests and knowledge. It was a foundation of communities across the globe, and I think it is missing now in our society.” But their business is as real and down to earth as it gets.

ll for Pets operates from its superb location at the corner of Cowrie Street, just one short block from the Sechelt promenade where you and your beloved (pet) take your regular strolls. Here you can find everything imaginable to help you care for your pet, as well as expert advice and a friendly greeting. Owner Erika McLean wants to help. She knows that, as confusing as food do’s and don’ts are for humans, the same overwhelming situation applies when it comes to providing optimal nutrition for your pet. She purchased the business in 2002 and since then, the All for Pets team has seen the pet food industry change a lot. “Over the past fifteen years,” says McLean, “the industry has grown so much that it can be confusing and hard to choose what is best for your pet.” The team of employees likes to keep current. Many have been with All for Pets for years; for some, it was their first high school job, while McLean looks forward to welcoming others back from maternity leave.
ALL FOR PETS
Kids and dogs love to stop by the store. Dogs get a treat, and kids get to see some non-standard creatures. McLean says, “Yes, we do have fish, quite a wide selection of easy-care and interesting species. During the summer our koi and goldfish find homes in neighbourhood ponds. We often have frogs, hamsters, finches, and budgies. Just let us know what animal you would like, and we will try our best to get it for you. Over the years, many bearded dragons have arrived specially for our customers.” Sechelt’s many active older folks enjoy their pets. We asked if All for Pets has products that are especially helpful. “Definitely,” says McLean. “Pets help to keep us active and are great companions, but some days they need more stimulation. We have toys and treat dispensers that will keep both cats and dogs busy. Each dog is unique, and we have a product that will let everyone know about your dog. ‘Bark Notes’ are messages you can put on the collar or leash. Anxious, Do Not Feed, Princess, Blind, and Friendly are just a few of these. Lights for the leash on those dark days and bear bells to let the bears know you are in their neighbourhood are something else we can’t do without around here.”

All for Pets takes its role and location in the heart of Sechelt seriously. They support many a long list of causes, such as school events, Rotary auctions, roller derby, SPCA, Gibsons Wildlife Rescue, salmon enhancement, the Downtown Business Association, and the Legion’s Poppy Fund. As well, they send pet food that has been damaged in shipping to the food bank. All this, plus they like to be able to greet everyone, people and pets, by name. summer 2018

THROUGH THE EYES OF
WANDA JEAN A GoFundMe Fundraising Campaign to support Wanda Jean on her journey. Wanda Jean Ruckle has devoted her life’s work to raising her family in Kamloops and volunteering in the care of the poor, homeless and those in need. Following many years as a volunteer, she was appointed in 2009 as Coordinator at St. Vincent Du Paul Thrift Shop. She helped develop the Women’s and Children’s Breakfast program which coincided with the Out of the Cold program, in collaboration with volunteers from St. Vincent Du Paul and St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral. Living with celiac disease has provided her with a wealth of knowledge and the importance of nutrition and healthy food choices, which she generously shared with many people, especially young mothers, through the years. An accident two years ago left her with a debilitating pain which forced her to leave her part-time paid position and greatly reduced her volunteer hours. Last fall, she was diagnosed with cancer. Initial tests revealed multiple cysts on her liver, and follow-up MRI confirmed an isolated tumor and inguinal hernia, both previously undetected. In June, Wanda Jean moved to Kelowna for 6 weeks of radiation and chemotherapy treatments to ensure a successful surgery to remove the tumor, lymph node and repair the hernia.
Friends of Wanda Jean have initiated a GoFundMe fundraising campaign to seek your support in her initial treatments and for the long journey ahead. Wanda Jean discovered photography—her “saving grace after divorce”—initially with a used digital camera from the thrift shop, and enjoyed capturing images that often surprised her, discovering beauty that often escpaes most of us. She would like to give back to anyone who supports her, by offering a copy of their selected photo to them as a token of her appreciation. Thank you for your time and please visit our GoFundMe page at www.gofundme.com/supportwanda-jean-on-her-journy and learn more about Wanda Jean. Your support will be most appreciated. - Susan Ferron
