Oh, the birds! Herons and eagles and hawks and ducks and seabirds of all kinds. Sue Harper’s photographs are full of the passion and affinity she feels for her natural subjects. Combine that with patience and an instinctive eye for balance and composition, and you get some truly outstanding images.

Sue Harper’s love of the outdoors and photography began early, with family camping trips in the provincial parks of Ontario. A little Brownie camera got her started, and she has been studying the work of other photographers and chasing the perfect shot ever since. She always shoots ethically, waiting for a shot, rather than trying to set it up or contrive it. Maybe this is how she achieves so much depth and intensity in her shots. The viewer really feels her respect for the subject’s peace and dignity. Harper feels so strongly about this that she includes the Code of Birding Ethics on her website. “Wildlife photography gives you a great appreciation of nature,” Harper says, “especially in today’s fast-paced world. I personally feel honoured every time a bird allows me in its presence, to witness and photograph it in its home.” Studying her photographs, it is amazing what we see in a bird’s eye: determination, triumph, resignation, softness, pride, concern. We think we see reflections of ourselves and our own moods. Or maybe we are just moved to recognize that we are all fellow creatures on this earth. Now a resident of Victoria, some of Harper’s favourite spots to get great photos include Esquimalt lagoon, Swan Lake in Saanich, and Ruby Lake on the Sunshine Coast. “There are so many beautiful areas all around BC that have so much to offer, whether you are behind the camera lens or just out enjoying the wilderness. Many don’t realize what we’ve got, and how important it is to preserve and protect the natural environment and those animals that live within it. I only hope that my photography helps in some small way to open people’s eyes to what beauty we can find in nature.”

art crawl SUNSHINE COAST
The Sunshine Coast Art Crawl once again coincided with the year’s first October storms. Although dealing with power outages and other weather-related challenges is a little stressful for organizers and participants, for the exuberant public, hopping over puddles and dodging leaves and even flying chunks of trees has become a kind of tradition. For those who could get away, Friday, Day One of Crawl, surprised us with no wind and even some sunlight in

and drove or used transit to see as much as you could, with 144 venues (51 of them new this year), more than 330 artists, and our wonderful Coast and communities to explore, you probably came to the same conclusion we did: this fantastic event just keeps getting better. Mark your calendars and start clearing out the spare room for guests from the city, next year’s Crawl will be held from October 19 to 21.

Gigi Hoeller’s finely wrought images of flowers, landscapes, wood carvings, and totems call to mind the work of Georgia O’Keeffe (the 20th-century American painter best known for her extreme and sensuous close-ups of flowers). Clearly Hoeller feels a real affinity for her subjects. The Totem Series is especially exciting. Using neutral, muted colours, Hoeller’s caring depiction of the worn paint and the aged and gouged wood resonates with a soulfulness that is almost startling, as if she has found each subject’s voice. Hoeller is a versatile artist. “In addition to original paintings on canvas and paper, I produce cards and small prints of my work, as well as larger limited-edition giclees. My flower images have been reproduced as postage stamps for the Marshall Islands and are currently being produced as limited-edition silk scarves. I also create small one-of-a-kind art blocks, which many people collect.” The colourful flower paintings (see her website) are both a celebration of the bloom and a study of colour and depth. Of these Hoeller says, “My landscapes and flowers are painted in bright, happy colours that scream, ‘See me and be happy.’ My goal is to make people feel something when they see my work.” And she loves the challenge of a commission. “Creating a special piece for someone, watching their eyes light up when they first see a painting created especially for them, is part of the joy of being an artist.”

When Tess Strauss retired from nursing three years ago, she purchased a longarm quilting machine. “It was my sports car,” she laughs. She and Gloria Nidzgorski founded Woodpecker Ridge Studio, where they offer finishing stitching services as well as custom quilting. The longarm machine, on a ten-foot frame, can be used for computerized designs as well as free-motion quilting. With this technique, Strauss explains, “I am actually using the machine as a pencil, drawing and stitching at the same time.” While Strauss has been quilting since her early twenties, Nidzgorski’s interest in the craft was piqued just ten years ago after passing a quilt shop in West Vancouver. She was hooked. “I can spend hours in my sewing room, in a space I go to and think and ponder. I also love picking the computer quilting patterns and the threads, and I give each quilt a name according to what I see in it.” Woodpecker Ridge Studios can complete your quilting project in two weeks or less. jan de beer In 1917, artist Marcel Duchamp challenged the notion of art objects as precious by submitting a urinal entitled “Fountain” for the exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists. One hundred years later, Jan de Beer continues this exploration using contemporary materials. “I am basically taking discarded paint (garbage) and bringing it into the gallery—on stretched drop cloth.” Through these large paintings—some of them as long as eight feet— de Beer seeks also to challenge the way art is “placed on a pedestal out of reach for the majority of normal people.” While the resulting images may evoke a variety of moods or landscapes, the aesthetic—however appealing—is not the point. “The works are created mostly in a liquid state over a relatively short period of time in a process where I intentionally suppress conscious control over the making process,” de Beer says. Known as action painting, this process influenced artists such as Jackson Pollock. The result is, by definition, unexpected. “Crackling, bubbling, and other chemical reactions are welcomed when it happens.” And how does one appreciate the unexpected results of this process? “The viewer should disengage when confronted by these works, to the point where the unconscious mind takes over,” de Beer explains. “They can set their minds free to surf their own emotions through the colours and textures presented on the canvas.” The exhibit, entitled Tides, is at the Doris Crowston Gallery (Sunshine Coast Arts Centre) in Sechelt from October 18 to November 12, 2017.

artists in the community CRS OUTREACH PROGRAM
Coast Recital Society (CRS) outreach activities extend well beyond the subscription concert series. Youth training workshops and master classes all feature CRS series performers. CRS also offers annual scholarships for local students of classical music. The CRS Artists in the Community outreach program covers a broad spectrum of activities that include concerts in schools as well as eldercare residences. CRS musicians perform in all three Sunshine Coast elder residences: Christensen Village, Shornecliffe Intermediate Care, and Totem Lodge. These highquality concerts contribute to the wellbeing of seniors by bringing performances to seniors within their own health-care setting.

Melanie Fogell’s engaging and diverse paintings reflect a rich and storied life. Colourful and reminiscent of the Fauves (early 20th-century painters who emphasized colour and the characteristics of the paint itself, rather than focusing on representation), her work is also strongly influenced by music. She holds a degree in piano performance, and her artwork has evolved in tandem with her musical interests. (She started out painting people, then nature and landscapes, and now her work tends toward the abstract.) “I was trained in classical music,” she says, “and now I have developed a love of jazz. I’m teaching myself to play jazz piano. I think the improvisational nature of the jazz I listen to has an impact on my painting in that I paint only abstract now.”
Her forest paintings absolutely dance with sunlight. Her enigmatic oval series is exuberant and wonderfully ambiguous. Surely these are flowers? Faces? Balloons? The viewer’s mind starts whirling, while the senses are simply pleased with the colour, composition, and movement. Fogell has raised four children and has lived in Winnipeg, Calgary, and Vancouver. When asked about art being influenced by life, she says, “There was never a shortage of emotions to draw on for my artwork. I guess everything in my life is related to my artwork, not just the music. Once again, there is something for everyone in the 2017– 2018 concert series of the Pender Harbour Music Society. In November, Paul Marleyn, cello, and Mauro Bertoli, piano, are back for another delightful program of classical music. The a cappella singing group Sweet Scarlet will help usher in the Christmas season in December with a wide range of songs, from traditional yuletide carols to upbeat pop favourites. In January, the Chamber Music Midwinter Weekend will feature a quartet made up of two husband-and-wife duos from Victoria. Pamela Highbaugh Aloni, cellist with the Lafayette String Quartet, and violist Yariv Aloni will team up with pianist extraordinaire Lorraine Min and her husband, Terence Tam, concertmaster of the Victoria Symphony, in two chamber-music concerts to light up the dark days of winter. Local favourite singer/songwriter Katrina Bishop will share her lyrics and music in February, featuring selections from her new CD. In March, Juno award–winning artist Shari Ulrich, with her trio, will grace the Music School concert stage. The series culminates with a return visit by jazz quartet Van Django, always a favourite with Sunshine Coast audiences. the sequoia grove The sequoia is a powerful symbol for strength, health, and connectedness. The largest, tallest, and most enduring of trees, they stand powerfully rooted to the earth and to each other, with strong and straight cores. They have a natural resistance to fire and disease. In a sense, people are like the sequoias. Sequoia Naturopathic Health Centre came into being in 2011 at its current location in Halfmoon Bay on a property where 22 of these redwood trees grow. Dr. Denise Rochon, who has been on the Sunshine Coast since 1992 and has been practising in the health-care field for more than 35 years, is passionate about our right to vibrant health and our need for connectedness. Her vision statement is clear: “Our vision is to expand the Sequoia Sanctuary to gather people and empower them in reconnecting with their true nature, their inner healer, with each other and the natural environment.” Healing from the inside out and honouring the “inner healer” is a strong theme in Dr. Rochon’s practice. A lot of people are receiving harsh diagnoses these days 26

She says her clients often come to her feeling anxious and depressed, and that the culprit can be an “accumulation of stressors: physical, environmental, personal, and collective. Mainly people are more worried and feeling more vulnerable about their general health than ever before. They feel that something is wrong. Very often it can be with their metabolism, digestion, or immunity, etc., and they want to understand what is affecting their health so much and address the root cause.”
Dr. Rochon knows that health is the natural result of the connectedness of the many facets of the human experience: community, family, environment, and spiritual. It is about what we eat as much as the way we think. It is important to consider all of these contributors to health. That said, Dr. Rochon insists that nutrition “is more important than ever. It is essential for people to be aware of what is happening with our food and with our soil and water, and how it is impacting us all. This is a time of opportunities!”

Dr. Rochon also offers a series of workshops and healing circles entitled “Remembering Who We Are, The Language of Our Body” structured on ancient healing wisdom that aligns the time of year to certain organs and their functions, which then correspond to particular psychological and spiritual challenges and opportunities. While many of us intuitively (or from repeated personal experience) know that October brings immune-system, lung, and gut challenges, and that winter can be a time when energy reserves are low, these have for thousands of years been considered facts in the ancient healing calendar. In her wonderful, nature-attuned space beside rooted, reaching, and majestic trees, Dr. Rochon wants to help us to deepen our understanding so that “we can experience more vitality and joy, a healthier body, a clearer mind, and expansive spirituality and connection to our self, our loved ones, and to the world.”

“Delight” is a word that shows up frequently when people talk about Sue, along with phrases such as “It was a joy to . . . It was so much fun to . . . It was an honour to . . . How we laughed when . . .” “She was a very unique and gifted lady who laughed her way through life and reveled in all things musical . . . She was always open and smiling . . . She always had her hand up to volunteer . . . She loved singing.” Pretty much everyone in our diverse music community recognized her name, for she was one of the volunteers and organizers whose energy, enthusiasm, and generosity makes life here on the Coast really like living. Every festival, concert, fundraiser, and auction, every community event you can think of, takes place only because these people are there to meet and strategize and give direction. And stack chairs. And maintain email lists. Sue was one of our most tireless and talented contributors, and she will be sadly missed.

Sue’s delight in our music scene was evident to all. Her lovely voice was valued in the various choirs in which she sang over the years and will be particularly missed in the Suncoast Phoenix Choir. Her absolute conviction that high-level music in our communities is essential led her to accept big responsibilities as the president of the Festival of the Performing Arts and of the Sunshine Coast Music Society. These roles she filled with grace and wit. Having sung in choirs since she was fifteen, Sue also brought a great deal of experience and zeal. She was particularly supportive of students and would brim with excitement after their successful performances. In 2012, Sue was recognized with an award at the Celebration of Excellence for volunteers on the Coast. As we embark upon the busy season of concerts and carolling, we know that Sue is with us in spirit, laughing with delight.

Locals are assessing their woodpiles, adjusting to the winter ferry schedule, and taking time to reconnect with each other after a busy summer of guests. We’ve been scattered, in and on the water, camping and vacationing and enjoying outdoor activities of every description. It’s been wonderful, but we’ve been going full speed. Now the familiar and comforting sight of school buses ranging the highway and side roads with their precious cargo has put us into a different gear.

You won’t even need binoculars to identify surf scoters, buffleheads, goldeneyes, pintails, harlequin ducks, grebes, and mergansers.
The “off” season on the Sunshine Coast brings so many delights. The creeks and streams have filled with autumn rains and the salmon are returning! Fishers in waders line the shores near the mouths of creeks, and kayakers troll past, rods balanced on their knees.
The fire bans have been lifted. And there is nothing that says “West Coast” like a seaside driftwood fire. Give a nod to Oktoberfest and cook some sausages on a stick, drink your wine or beer from a tin mug, and enjoy the sunset. You won’t have to stay up late to see the stars as the days get shorter.
Soon our forests will be filled with fungi. Don’t bother asking; the locals won’t tell you where their chanterelle patch is, or which slope hides the elusive and choice pine mushroom. But vehicles parked at odd places on the logging roads will give you a clue. Watch for posters advertising
Indoors, choirs gleefully reassemble after a summer hiatus. They’ll be working on songs for their Christmas concerts, but really they’re just happy to be together and singing again, and they are always pleased to welcome new members. Art Crawls are under way, so you’ll have a chance to view

studios and galleries. Restaurants aren’t as busy now. And there’s live music in every community every weekend. Check information sites and billboards for special guests and comedy or theme nights. Well-attended Remembrance Day services are held in each of our communities. Winter on the Sunshine Coast can be as active as you like. The trails for hiking and mountain biking beckon now that the heat has subsided. Watch for equestrians too. The opening meet of the Fraser Valley Hunt is held in Roberts Creek every year, the first weekend in November. This is an exciting event for spectators, horses, and riders. Organizers arrange for a catered Hunt Breakfast and will suggest good spots for viewing as the red-coated riders and baying hounds gallop past and over logs and natural jumps. Here on the Coast we have access to the more usual winter sports too. Last winter was epic up on Dakota Ridge with metres of snow, groomed trails, and a full season of skiing and snowshoeing minus the crowds of Whistler and Vancouver. And all this only twenty minutes up the hill from Wilson Creek Mall, where great coffee, baking, and sushi are available. The IGA will satisfy all your grocery needs. Alpha Sports is there too, where you can rent snowsport equipment, so there is no excuse. You weren’t coming here to rest, were you?

Melanie Fogell Melanie Fogell, an artist, lives in Gibsons, BC.
