N O T E PA D

I recently completed a cross-Canada trip, which took me from Vancouver to as far as Halifax. I saw not only the astonishingly varied landscapes of this vast country but also the diversity of the human tapestry that makes up its population. In Toronto alone, the city’s residents, people from all over the world, speak at least two hundred different languages daily. Foreign-born Canadians make up more than twenty percent of the country’s population.

JENNIFER GOODWIN

The path that eventually brought me to Canada started out very straight. Too straight: school, more school, university, a job in marketing, another job in the same field, and before I knew it my career had spanned fifteen years. Also, the Manila heat was unbearable; I desperately wanted a change. But while I had chosen Canada, Canada had yet to choose me. The screening process was very thorough. I had to prove myself worthy to be Canadian. This was done by an impassive points system based on education, work experience, family ties in Canada, and a comprehensive physical examination. I scored well, but not quite well enough (mainly because I didn’t have any relatives in Canada to help me with the transition). So I was called in for an interview at the Canadian Embassy in Manila. Most of the interview consisted of asking me in person the same questions asked in my application form. At the end of the interview, the consul told me that, since I was a few points shy, this interview would “make or break” my application. He asked the final questions:

What do you expect from Canada? I answered, “The same opportunity you will give to the next person. I’m not expecting anything more than that.”

Discover the most relaxing way to experience the rich culture of the European Heartland. Luxurious river cruise ships and central locations allow us to lay the sights at your door, freeing you to explore in comfort and look forward to evenings of exquisite performances in splendid settings. Each tour features a glorious concert program devised by renowned impresario George Zukerman, OC, OBC.

I’ll always be proud of my Filipino heritage and values that have moulded me as a person, and with equal fervour . . . forever proud of being Canadian.

It was almost twenty years ago, but I still get emotional when I recall those words by the Canadian Embassy official in Manila, and the final interview that made Canada my new home. It was a lengthy, fraught process, one that many have undertaken for different reasons. I feel incredibly lucky to have made the right choice, and grateful that Canada chose me as well.

photo: MA Waterways

What can you contribute to Canada? I replied, “Love of family and respect for elders. I’ll bring those values with me.” All this time, the consul wasn’t even looking at me, just typing on his keyboard. I had surprised myself; the answers just came, naturally and without hesitation. The consul then looked up, smiled, and offered a handshake: “Welcome to Canada!”

life on the coast. in pictures.

Dean Van’t Schip gives us everything—everything that matters in a shot: stillness, movement, detail, panorama, colour, texture. It’s all there in his compelling nature photography. So it’s no wonder that his work has been published in countless magazines, books, calendars, and cards. Communication is at the heart of his creations. He describes wanting viewers to really share his eye and to “. . . feel as if they are there experiencing what I am at the moment an image is captured.” With this in mind, nearly all of the work is done with the camera out in the field. He uses his editing program only for “minor tweaking,” he says. Having grown up on the Sunshine Coast, Van’t Schip knows where to go for great photos, and he covers a wide range of territory. The place has changed a lot since he was a child: “I’ve seen it get increasingly busier and more populated. More photographers and artists around has meant more competition, but it has also built up an extensive creative learning pool.” Van’t Schip has always seen strong local interest in his wildlife, land, and seascape photography, but as with everything, the market has changed. “In the last few years,” he says, “the stock photo industry has become increasingly more difficult for sales due to an increase in digital photography. My more interpretive work has been recognized in the arts community both here and abroad, and I’m excited to see where my camera takes me next.”

We are too, because the results are riveting. His forest shots carry the viewer right off the page into the expanse, his ocean pictures are timeless and energized, and every wildlife shot contains an exquisite moment as well as an eternity. BEYOND THE BASICS

WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE

Go ahead and touch! We just don’t hear that often enough. Nothing in this vibrant, diverse exhibition was fragile, and it was a rare treat to be able to handle the creations. So many textures and materials! Part of an ongoing tenth-anniversary year at Fibre Works, which features past students, teachers, and exhibitors, Beyond the Basics was designed to change your idea of basketry forever. There were baskets, sure, but also vessels and pouches and sculpture and wall hangings. The viewer was introduced to bias plaiting, hexagonal, and coils. Traditional plant materials were used, but also pretty much everything else under the sun: silk, feathers, paper, pine needles, waxed thread, beads, bamboo, paint, ochre, sinew, copper, buttons, bitter cherry bark, sand, rags, fishing line, cotton, foil, beach rope, organza, twill. Beyond the Basics highlighted the work of Jackie Abrams and her students. Abrams, who lives in Vermont, has been teaching basketry in North America and in Australia for thirty years. This exuberant exhibition was a fine tribute to her talent and her influence and to this ancient and important art. FIBRE WORKS GALLERY IS LOCATED AT 12887-12889 SUNSHINE COAST HIGHWAY, MADEIRA PARK. earth, form & fire

PIA SILLEM We already know Pia Sillem’s work. Her beautifully wrought ceramic pieces celebrate the form, composition, and slow, deliberate movement of the natural world around us. Her sculptures take the deeply familiar forms of young leaves unfurling, old leaves curling, of seeds and seed pods. We are reminded of the symmetry in life cycles, from beginning to end. Her vessels and vases are elegant and earthy at the same time, swelling and narrowing with an organic ease. And her beautiful urns are spare but comfortingly solid, in lovely natural tones, with just a hint of detail. Sillem has lived on the Sunshine Coast since 2007. Four friends got together to build a woodfired kiln and continue to help in each firing, which is a labour- and time-intensive undertaking. With wood taken from the property, the kiln must be stoked for fifty hours to reach the required temperature of 1300° Celcius (2350° Fahrenheit). The results are simply gorgeous. Her work can be viewed at Geopia Garden and Gallery, in Earl’s Cove.

COLOURS OF CANADA

JANE URQUHART PHOTO BY MARK RAYNES ROBERTS

The Sunshine Coast Arts Council unveils “50 Canadian Things” in the Doris Crowston Gallery at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, August 2―20. The exhibition is based on Jane Urquhart’s book A Number of Things, which the internationally acclaimed author was invited to write for Canada’s 150th. The book features fifty “things” that have particular significance for Urquhart as a Canadian. In turn, gallery curator Ian MacLeod invited fifty Sunshine Coast artists to each create a work inspired by the book. These works range from paintings and photographs to mixed media and textile installations. In conjunction with the art exhibition will be a special reading by Urquhart. Her work has received the Marian Engel Award and the Harbourfront Festival Prize. She is also a Chevalier dans l’Order des Arts et des Lettres in France and is an Officer of the Order of Canada.

life on the coast. in pictures.

Ms. Urquhart will read surrounded by works of art inspired by her book. Each piece is a personal interpretation of one of the things that “spoke” to the artist. The reading will take place on Thursday, August 10, at 8 pm in the Doris Crowston Gallery. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at www.sharethere.com/ sunshinecoastartscouncil or by calling 604.885.5412. This group exhibition and reading is made possible by the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th, a collaboration between the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation, the Government of Canada, and extraordinary leaders from coast to coast to coast. P

life on the coast. in pictures.

Portraiture is surprisingly versatile. Alter some of the plains of colour, the background, the highlight patterns, and the viewer’s eye starts to see abstraction in place of the concrete. We see this all the time in Nature’s composition: the perfect dappling of sunlight, the satisfying chaos of the forest floor. We’re less used to seeing it in our pets. And yet it is there. Who hasn’t marvelled at the tabby cat’s unique and mesmerizing stripes or the wonderful splattering of liver-coloured spots on a pointer, or really looked into the eyes of an animal and seen unexpected depth? Peggy Collins delights in these discoveries. Her approach to making them into art is almost painterly, as she layers, colours, and transforms the images. “For these images,” she says, “I start with photographs, then work on them digitally, using various apps and programs, including Topaz and Photoshop. By creating layers in Photoshop, I sometimes let parts of the original photograph come through (such as a cat’s colouring or eyes), but more often than not, a piece is completely changed from the original photograph.” The result is an absolutely unique, satisfying work of colour and pattern. Her cat images have always been immediate hits, and she is working on a series of dog images now, trying to photograph as many breeds as possible (though she loves mutts too). As with artists of every ilk, Peggy is adjusting to a changing marketplace for her work. “After over two decades of selling my work at markets and fairs, I felt it was time to make the jump to having my work solely online.” Our local markets will miss Peggy’s presence and fine work, but she encourages her former clients to seek her out online, where viewing and ordering is easy and efficient. pender harbour

CHAMBER MUSIC FE S TIVAL For the past twelve summers, beautiful things have happened on the third weekend of August in the Music School overlooking the Government Wharf in Madeira Park. This tradition continues August 18―20, when the Pender Harbour Chamber Music Festival presents a weekend of glorious concerts celebrating traditional and innovative music best heard in an intimate space. The Festival also celebrates the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation by featuring the work of Canadian composers in each of its five concerts. Artistic director (and pianist) Alexander Tselyakov has invited a wonderful group of musicians this year: the Gryphon Trio (Annalee Patipatanakoon, violin; Roman Borys, cello; James Parker, piano); violinist Joan Blackman; violist (and violinist) Maria Larionof; celebrated clarinettist James Campbell; and for the final concert, these exceptional artists will be joined by violinist Jason Ho and cellist Brian Yoon for a seldom-played piano quintet composed by a very young Béla Bartók. Our popular (and free) Rising Tide initiative opens the Festival on Friday, August 18, at 1:30 pm. The Harbour’s own mezzo-soprano, Rose-Ellen Nichols, Halfmoon Bay’s Louis Dillon, and Gibsons resident David Poon will perform a lively program in “Songs to the Stars and to Heaven.” That evening, at 7:30, we will be taken “Into the Realm of Spirits” with gorgeous repertoire ranging from Beethoven two ways—his Trio in B-flat Major as well as a selection of his letters set to music by Canadian James Wright (and sung by Rose-Ellen)—to Lovreglio and Brahms. Saturday afternoon, “Through Rose-Coloured Glasses” will offer everything from jazz to klezmer, and that evening, “But Do Not Quite Forget” transports us through Brahms, Ravel, and Michael Oesterle to a stunning trio by Rebecca Clarke. The Festival concludes on Sunday afternoon with “Memories Abound”: Canadian Christos Hatzis’s haunting “Old Photographs,” a Beethoven piano trio, Hungarian dances by Leó Weiner, and that highly anticipated Bartók piano quintet. We’re very grateful for our loyal Friends of the Festival and our hard-working volunteers as well as a supportive community. Each small donation or generous gesture makes this Festival possible. Regular audience members know that tickets sell quickly. They’re available online at penderharbourmusic.ca or 604.989.3995. WORDS | THERESA KISHKAN

eleven equal artists

P OWE R OF PAI N T WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE

The Power of Paint is the perfect name for this impressive yearly exhibition by a group of friends and colleagues known as Eleven Equal Artists. Energy is the first impression and synergy is the second. These Sunshine Coast fine-art painters and mixed-media artists inspire and encourage each other in excellence, and the result is even more than the sum of the considerable parts. Now in its sixth year, the annual August show, timed to coincide with peak Sunshine Coast festival season, features successful, passionate, experienced, diverse visual artists, some of the heavy hitters of our vibrant arts community. Sharing the energy is a big part of the event. An unusual collaboration by the group will see a number of smaller canvases splattered with black paint. Then each artist will take four or five of these and work on them in his/her own style. The canvases will be arranged and reassembled as one huge collaborative piece for display before being offered for sale individually, to raise money for bursaries for high school students. These collaborative panels beautifully demonstrate the highly productive marriage of structure and freedom; you’ll see some surprises. Eleven Equal Artists: Morley Baker, Josefa Fritz Barham, Todd Clark, Elizabeth Evans, Greta Guzek, Carol LaFave, Kim LaFave, Ian MacLeod, Cindy Riach, Nadina Tandy, and Marlene Vermeulen. Each of these artists has his or her own following, and the demonstrations and artist talks are well-attended, lively and informative. This year’s exhibit runs from August 18 to 20 at the Seaside Centre in Sechelt.

Men’s shirts, bags, belts, blouses, bikinis, denim in all its glorious variety (inky dark, faded, cut off . . .), casual shoes of every description, and hats—real felt hats in deep and satisfying colours. This is a store you can spend some time in. It’s casual, comfortable, country-cottage, earthy; it’s the quality stuff people really wear. Yes, it used to be Lucy’s. But the store moved a year ago (to 5707 Cowrie Street), renovated, and rebranded. Moorestock reflects the owner’s name (Nancy Palmer-Moore), and their new aesthetic: West Coast Contemporary meets fun Woodstock. It has always been a unisex store, and the new name is more inclusive of the guys. The store is full of what you see Coasters wearing every day. A little rugged, some texture and detail, lots of durable yet fashionable accessories, and everything designed for active comfort.

There’s nothing as photogenic as fish! Swimming wild, on your plate, or on display in a market (think of the vast fish market in Venice, Italy), nestled on ice, and representing all the bounty and variety of the sea: the curves, the colours, the patterns, and most importantly the flavours! Beloved by regulars and visitors alike, the Sechelt Fish Market gives us our own little piece of this briny abundance. From spot prawns to sturgeon, Dungeness crab to an array of cod, the only thing more impressive than the assortment is the expert advice available. For those who have questions about marinades and cooking times or who just want a tried and tested recipe, owners Lauri and Dean Paul really come through with fresh and helpful suggestions that keep their clients coming back. life on the coast. in pictures.

The Pender Harbour area has shoreline, marinas, docks, and lakes in abundance, and a strong music society that organizes concerts all year. It is well worth taking some time to explore. Hike the well-maintained and popular boardwalk trail to Smugglers Cove and see the contented cruising yachts anchored in the rocky bays. Find a way to get yourself over to Thormanby Island for the day (by boat—your own or a friend’s— by kayak, or the convenient, affordable, and friendly water taxi service). Here you will really get a taste of the West Coast cottage culture, have a chance to swim in clear warm water, and find lots of beachcombing treasures. Willingdon Beach, Mahood Beach, Second Beach, and others provide many places for seaside fun in Powell River. And if you feel like flexing your biceps in a very Canadian way while enjoying clean lakes and wilderness, the Powell Forest Canoe Route is a 57-km, eight-lake, fiveportage journey that takes about five days. Locals like to plan their leisure according to the weather, the angle of the sun, the tides, the wind, and water temperatures, and around our many community festivals that start in May and continue through October. Living here usually means a lot of house guests, and we all have our favourite activities and dining spots to share with visiting loved ones. All of our communities are seaside, and being near, on, or in the water becomes a strong priority as soon as the weather permits (and often before). The sheltered, accessible natural harbours of Gibsons and the Pender Harbour area are popular destinations in themselves and the perfect points of departure for boaters wanting to explore our interesting and pristine coastline. And don’t forget to visit the new Gibsons Public Market before you set out. Sechelt Inlet, with its protected, warm water and easy access is a playground for stand-up paddleboarders, kayakers, and families. And one of the best places for a warm, accessible swim is off the rocks and pebble beach at the end of Snickett Park, right in the heart of Sechelt. Walk a block to the Cowrie Street market afterward, or to one of several restaurants to fuel you for your next activity. But if you prefer solid ground under your feet and the cool forest beckons in the heat of summer, you’ve come to the right place. Roberts Creek and area has an extensive and well-maintained trail network that brings mountain bikers from all over. You won’t travel far in any direction without crossing a clean, sparkling stream, so your canine companions will approve of this choice. For hiking the real back country, the Tetrahedron is easy to access and will take you through pristine watersheds and oldgrowth forest to incredible views, cabins, and lakes. Further up the Coast, Powell River proudly hosts the Sunshine Coast Trail, 180 km of hut-to-hut wilderness hiking that is absolutely free. We know, you’re overwhelmed. But there’s a remedy. Book a quiet SloCat harbour tour around Pender Harbour to get oriented, see the sights and the sunset while you collect your thoughts and energy, and make a plan. AI R S PA C E “It never gets tired.” That’s what a friend and frequent flier on Sunshine Coast Air says of the view of our incredible coastline from above: the blues and greens, the rocks and coves, the patterns of the tides and wind on the water, our ideally located communities, and how very much nature dominates the scene. One hundred percent locally owned and operated, with ten employees, Sunshine Coast Air contributes to the vibrancy of the Sunshine Coast experience by supporting businesses and commuters and by being a leader in our tourism sector. With daily scheduled flights to Nanaimo and frequent flights to Victoria and Vancouver Airport, coastal travel becomes a thing of beauty and ease. And they do this with a perfect safety rating, setting the standard in the seaplane industry. Customized flights, real estate tours, and charters are especially popular during the summer months. Fly ’n Dine packages with West Coast Wilderness Lodge and elopement packages are available. Check the “specials” page on their website frequently for deep discounts to non-standard destinations. “Boat access only”? Not quite; Sunshine Coast Air specializes in remote destinations. “From sea to sea, a tapestry, of colour, shape and sound . . . ”

MORAINE LAKE, ROCKY MOUNTAINS BY ALBERTO LOYO /SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

You might remember that phrase from the song This Is My Home (Bob Buckley, Graham Gibson) which was premiered at the World Exposition in Vancouver in 1986 (Expo 86). Buckley’s “Expo Song” has been played every July 1 in communities across Canada, ever since. Expo ‘86 was when the west coast of Canada was showcased to the world, and we haven’t looked back. We’ve grown, opened up and become a vibrant destination and a model to the world for lifestyle. ZOOM’s creator, Edmund Arceo, took a train trip across Canada this Spring to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary and to have a closer look at this tapestry that makes up our country. He’d like to share some of his impressions with us.

CANADA FROM COAST TO COAST The 150th anniversary of Canada as a nation is a perfect excuse to take this kind of trip. But you had more personal reasons for wanting to make the journey. Can you share some of them with us? When I was applying as an Independent Immigrant to Canada, I was asked where I wanted to reside and my immediate thought was Vancouver, because I thought it would be similar in weather to San Francisco, where I had been before. At that time, my knowledge of Vancouver was limited to what I’d learned from a tourism promotional video. Since then, I’ve wondered how it would have turned out for me if I had chosen a different part of Canada. I’ve visited many cities in Canada, but that doesn’t really give you the scope; it’s the vast spaces between the cities that makes Canada unique. I know that Canada is a big and beautiful country and I wanted to experience it first-hand. When I think of travelling, my immediate thought is usually to visit another country. But there is so much to discover right here at home. Many people dream of taking a train ride across Canada. How was it really? Was it luxurious? Did you get restless? Could anyone possibly get bored? We were advised by the tour company (Fresh Tracks Canada) to take the Rocky Mountaineer for the first two days–the trip through the Canadian Rockies. The reason for this is that ViaRail travels at night so you miss a lot of the scenery. This made the trip a bit more expensive but it was worth it. The Rocky Mountaineer is a well-oiled machine, with very professional and able staff. There was always food and drinks being served (and we ate everything offered!), lots of information was provided along the way, and we were alerted whenever a photo opportunity came along (a waterfall, a raging river, wildlife, etc.). Travelling with Rocky Mountaineer meant that we stayed in hotels at night. But even that was hassle free: our luggage was delivered straight to the hotel room and room key cards were handed to us before we left the train. And in the morning the reverse. We never carried our bags. When we switched to Via Rail for the long ride from Jasper to Toronto, we had a sleeper cabin with private toilet, and each car had its own shower stall. Meals are in the dining car, with full service. While you can stay in your cabin, you can go to at least two dome cars that offer almost unobstructed views, a bar 40

car where drinks and snacks are served. It was a perfect balance of privacy and conviviality. Travelling by train taught me a bit about myself. I did get a little restless, and struggled with the feeling that I should be doing something “productive.” This is a hard attitude to shake, and I was often tempted to pull out my laptop and get to work, even though the scenery was incredible and the journey was the whole point. We’re so very goal-focused in this culture. Being more journey-focused would benefit everyone. Another revelation was that looking backwards sometimes gets you better photos. There’s a metaphor in that too. What was the most unusual or unexpected incident of the entire trip? Only one surprise was a disappointment. I had visited Lake Louise many years ago and marvelled at its turquoise water. I was excited to learn that our room at Chateau Lake Louise had been upgraded to a lake view suite. When I slowly opened the drapes for a dramatic reveal what I saw was an all-white frozen lake. Still beautiful but not the view I was hoping for. Spring thaw comes late in the Rockies! A delightful surprise was to learn that Via Rail has a program wherein musicians can travel free in exchange for performing 3 sets each day. They perform in the bar car which turns into a mini/intimate performance area. The duo (sax and guitar) who performed during our trip encouraged the audience to sing along–and even taught us the refrain to their original song. This was a lot of fun. Another surprise was that my ideas about Quebec City totally changed! I wasn’t at all excited about visiting Quebec City. For some reason I had the notion that the people weren’t very friendly, especially to non-French speaking visitors. I also didn’t know what to expect as I had not done any research. I hadn’t even looked at any photos! It’s now my favourite city to visit. We stayed in the upper town of old Quebec City–it was like walking into a movie set! It reminded me of Beauty & The Beast (having seen the live-action version just before our trip)–with the Chateau Frontenac looking like a medieval castle towering about the quaint little town. People were very friendly everywhere we went and there were many tourists–old, young, and of varied ethnicities.

When I think of travelling, my immediate thought is usually to visit another country. But there is so much to discover right here at home.

Seeing the vastness of the land, the enormity of the Rockies, and realizing the time it took to create them also made me feel humbled, small and insignificant.

42

Canada is vast and its geography is diverse. You knew that starting out. But were you still surprised? Yes! We’d already been travelling 7 days (Vancouver, Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper) and we were still seeing mountains! It never seemed to end. Landscapes vary greatly, colours change, from snow to green, to desert-like places. Then plains as far as the eye can see, interrupted by rivers, lakes, then gently rolling hills, big skies . . . it was a visual overload for me. I am still looking at the hundreds of photos I took and re-living the experience. It was truly awe-inspiring. Of course the Sunshine Coast is best, but was there another place along your trip that had you thinking hmmm maybe I could live here? I always imagine how it would be if I lived in a place I am just visiting. I have a natural ability (and willingness!) to adapt. But I do think that how you feel inside is (or ought to be) more important than your surroundings. The challenge is to make the best of the situation, be the best version of yourself, no matter where you live. My ideal trip would be to stay in each place for a longer time to get an idea of how it might feel to be a resident there. Ideally one to two weeks per city. I’d do this trip again, perhaps starting in Newfoundland and making my way back home to BC. There is so much to absorb. Did the trip bring up any thoughts about what it means to be identified with this huge place? To be a Canadian, whether aboriginal, settler, a generation or two in, or new? I had mixed emotions. I felt lucky to have become part of such a big and beautiful country, and privileged to have been given an opportunity to pursue my dreams here. And overwhelmingly proud to be Canadian. Seeing the vastness of the land, the enormity of the Rockies, and realizing the time it took to create them also made me feel humbled, small and insignificant. What I mean is, it brought up thoughts about what it means to be a human on this planet. We’re just a blip in earth’s history. We don’t even register in the universe. Yet . . . I guess we still matter . . . To others in our lifetimes, and maybe even in the bigger scheme. We can’t know how far reaching even our smallest actions and intentions will be. VISIT THE ZOOM WEBSITE AT ZOOMSUNSHINECOAST.COM FOR MORE PHOTOS FROM EDMUND’S CROSS-CANADA TRIP.

MEANWHILE AT HOME...

While ZOOM was off touring the country and snapping photos of glacier lakes and vast prairies, a pair of robins settled in cozily on the steps of the office, surrounded by west coast forest and quiet, and set about raising a vigorous brood. I was worried that our return would frighten the robin parents away, but they seemed to know that we were friends. They didn’t even seem to mind the occasional curious sniffs from resident canine staff member Miguel. The 4 bright blue eggs hatched and we were thrilled to watch the parents feed the clamouring young ones from early until late. Parenting is hard work for all species! And then the fledglings tested their wings and were off. It all happened so quickly. We felt a little bereft: no note, no forwarding address! But maybe the nest will be used again next year. Anticipating the particular delights of each season is one of the many rewards of calling a place “home.”

What started as a photo album of Diego and his friends has become our most popular section, with readers sharing photos of their own beloved pets.
