First cholera case highlights danger of Vhembe’s inability to deliver water and repair sewerage system

Vhembe’s ailing and often completely dysfunctional sewerage system is a “ticking time bomb”. This is the opinion of residents and community leaders, and some reckon a cholera outbreak, such as currently experienced in Hammanskraal, could soon create havoc in Vhembe.

As if the inability of the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) to maintain and repair infrastructure is not bad enough, residents in certain areas have resorted to vandalising pipelines and breaking sewerage pipes. This was done to protest against the lack of water in areas such as Phiphidi and Duthuni. Community members living around the Nandoni Dam also closed the plants at the dam, causing large parts of the area

to be completely without water.

On Monday, the executive mayor of the VDM, Dowelani Nenguda, tried to put out some of the flames and visited the Phiphidi and Duthuni areas, where he addressed residents. “We understand that most of the communities are without water, and we are working hard to resolve the challenge of water to the affected communities … let’s try to resolve the challenge in a peaceful manner without damaging water infrastructure,” said Nenguda.

The situation affected several of the region’s hospitals, which had to operate without water in their taps. The hospitals included Malamulele Hospital and Tshilidzini Hospital.

The spokesperson for the Department of Health, Mr Neil Shikwambana, said the protesting communities had destroyed water infrastructure leading to these facilities. The protesters also

closed the pump station at Nandoni Dam last Monday (22nd). “Due to the closure of the dam, delivering water through water tankers to the hospitals will not be possible,” he said.

Shikwambana said the department was worried that the closure of the dam and the destruction of infrastructure coincided with the scourge of cholera confronting other provinces of the country. “The department is working with all stakeholders to try and prevent the disease, but community-induced water shortages will compromise the efforts. The department wishes to request community members to be considerate when venting their service-delivery frustrations as the blocking of the water supply inconveniences health-care service delivery with the potential for dire service delivery,” he added.

Pick n Pay Thavhani hit by armed robbers

“At first, we thought someone was playing with

firecrackers. It was only after two men came running from the shop, firing a gun, that we realised that

something was amiss.”

Those were the words of a tenant who works at one of the shops at Thavhani Mall after the Pick n Pay branch at the mall was robbed by armed suspects at about 10:43 on Saturday, 27 May.

According to an eyewitness who spoke to Limpopo Mirror on condition of anonymity, a security officer had just collected the previous day’s cash from the store’s cash office. While still in the store, he was accosted by two armed men who allegedly pointed their guns at him and ordered him to hand over the bag of cash. The security officer was relieved of the money bag and his service pistol. The robbers fired two

shots inside the shop before they left the premises, and another shot when exiting the mall.

One of the tenants at the mall said she was busy speaking to a customer at the door when she heard the gunshots. She said she and the customer ran back inside as they did not know where the sound was coming from. “While we were inside, we saw two men running past with a bag, and then they fired another shot not far from our shop before exiting the mall. I have never been so frightened as I have never experienced something like this before. I only felt safe again when the police arrived and took charge of the scene,” she said.

Vhembe SAPS acting spokesperson Sergeant Vhonani Lokie Masi confirmed the incident. “Our members received information about the robbery and rushed to the scene, but the robbers were already gone. The suspects, alleged to have been four in total, are unknown at this stage. It is alleged that they used a silver Toyota Etios, whose registration number is not known. We have opened a case of robbery and investigations are ongoing,” he said.

Life sentence for rapist hailed as a warning

On Friday, 26 May, the Malamulele Regional Court sentenced a 38-yearold man to life imprisonment for the rape of a 19-year-old mentally challenged woman. The name of the accused could not be divulged to protect the identity of the victim, who is regarded as vulnerable.

The ordeal occurred at Mudavula village, outside Malamulele, on the evening of 1 July 2017, while the man was at the victim’s home, drinking beer with her uncle. The man followed the girl to an outside toilet, where he forcibly had sex with her. After satisfying himself,

he left the girl at the toilet, went back inside and continued drinking as if nothing had happened. The girl went back inside crying and reported the matter to her aunt. The police were summoned, and the man was arrested that same day.

During the trial, he pleaded not guilty. The DNA evidence, however, which state advocate Norman Makhubele relied on, linked the accused to the crime and ensured the conviction.

He suffered from extreme diarrhoea, vomiting and dehydration, and was admitted, isolated, and treated, while specimens were sent to the NICD for testing. The test results came back positive. The patient has reportedly since improved and is due to be discharged.

Two ATMs bombed at Caltex garage in Siloam

The police in Siloam have launched a manhunt for a group of heavily armed suspects after two ATMs were bombed at the Caltex garage in Siloam last Thursday evening (25 May), at around 22:00.

The police spokesperson in Limpopo, Col Malesela Ledwaba, confirmed that an undisclosed amount of money was stolen from the blown-up machines and that a third ATM was only tampered with. No injuries were reported, and police investigations are continuing.

When Limpopo Mirror visited the area on Tuesday (30th), a team from the VDM attempted to get the sewage flowing again, but the smell was nauseating. A gardener working in that street could quickly show the reporter where the stench was coming from. “It is fortunate that the VDM fixed it today, otherwise you would not have been able to stand the nasty smell from the flowing sewage. It is very difficult for me to work in this area because the stink takes your breath away,” said the 52-year-old man.

One of the residents who has been living near the Riverview flats for more than a decade told Limpopo Mirror that everyone complained to the municipality about the sewage that was continuously streaming down the street, but that their pleas fell on deaf ears.

“There is a stream running down to a small dam next to Firefly here in Louis Trichardt and I often see people fishing there. They might eat or sell their catch. These people are not aware that that water is contaminated [with sewage]. This is really a ticking time bomb for an outbreak of any waterborne disease,” he said.

The fear of drinking contami-

In a media statement, MEC for Health Phophi Ramathuba encouraged communities to remain calm and vigilant by practicing basic hygiene, hand washing, and drinking safe water. Meanwhile, the Department of Health has activated some measures to respond to the outbreak of the disease, such as conducting health promotions by working with local stakeholders in the hotspots, including the Beitbridge Border Post. The department has also met with the VDM about the need to conduct water tests regularly as a preventative measure.

Residents are cautioned to be very wary of contaminated water as it may contain bacteria that can cause cholera. Cholera is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae that is primarily transmitted through contaminated water or food. The bacterium is typically found in areas with poor sanitation and inadequate access to clean drinking water.

When human faeces containing the bacteria contaminates water sources, such as rivers, lakes, or wells, the disease can spread rapidly. Ingesting contaminated water or food, especially raw or undercooked seafood, can lead to infection.

Passengers stranded while feud between taxis and buses continue

Passengers travelling from Elim to Gauteng were left stranded at the Elim Shopping Complex for a whole day last week because of a dispute that had ensued between the Elim Hlanganani Long and Short Distance Taxi Association and City to City Buses. The taxi association accused the City to City company of failing to comply with certain agreed-upon rules for operating.

On Friday, 26 May, the taxi association held a peaceful protest, but consequently, scores of passengers were stuck at the shopping complex from morning until afternoon with more than 50 security personnel from the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa).

Earlier this year, the taxi association, Njaka Njaka Tribal Council, Prasa and members of the Waterval Police Station held a meeting where a new rule was implemented, permitting only two buses from

each bus company to operate outside the shopping complex until 08:30. This decision was made after taxi companies had complained that they were struggling to get passengers because of all the buses.

Members of the taxi association now say that the City to City company is still using more than two buses.

Mr Abie Khosa, a member of the Elim Taxi Association, told Limpopo Mirror that they had prevented the City to City buses from operating as they had not adhered to the new terms. “But Prasa was arrogant; they stated that they would operate according to their permits. We tried to engage with them, along with the police, but they remained obstinate,” he said.

Following the resolution, the buses resumed their services under the agreement that, from Saturday (27 May) onwards, only two buses would operate outside the complex until 08:30.

Mr Thabo Makhuvele, one of the passengers who was left

stranded, voiced his dissatisfaction about missing work because of the situation. “I had no choice but to stay at the complex from morning to afternoon, since I had already purchased a ticket,” he said.

The chairperson of the traditional council, Mr Vicky Muvhali, emphasised the need for collaboration and their support of the new strategy that is being implemented. “We will have another meeting on 9 June to continue resolving the problem,” he said.

Prasa spokesperson Ms Andiswa Makanda said they were not in any position to comment on the matter, pending legal processes. “Once finalised, we will share a detailed account of the situation. The safety of our staff, assets and passengers remains our number one and unwavering priority. We have engaged with the necessary structures to ensure that our assets, passengers and general public are safeguarded and that all operators comply with the legal requirements,” she said.

Boy (7) disappears while herding cattle along river

Incidents of violence broke out in the Tshaulu Tshilaphala area, following the disappearance of a seven-year-old boy the past weekend. The boy went missing while herding cattle with his grandfather on Saturday, 27 May.

Rilise Munyai was last seen when his grandfather, Mr Thifhelimbilu Netshilaphala (60), left him in the bush while he went to attend to his cattle along the Luvuvhu River. When he returned to where he had left Rilise with his (Netshilaphala’s) cellphone, at around 14:00, the boy and the phone were nowhere to be found. Community members searched the bushes the whole of Saturday and into the night, with no luck.

The incident has caused renewed panic among the residents as this is not the first time a child has gone missing from the area. Last year, two children were rescued just in time when a man (who was believed to have been a foreign national) attempted to kidnap them in nearby bushes.

Since Monday, sporadic incidents where community members burnt tyres and barricaded the roads in the village have occurred. Police are having a tough time curtailing the situation. A meeting was held on Tuesday, where angry

Murder case against SABC Livhu to wait for DPP to make a decision

The murder case against Livhuwani Madadzhe, popularly known as SABC Livhu, was once again postponed, pending the decision of the director of public prosecutions. The 38-year-old comedian and businessman from Mangondi Sidou appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on 30 May.

During his short appearance, his case was postponed to 28 July. This was his first appearance since he was granted R50 000 bail, with conditions, on 13 April.

Madadzhe stands accused of the murder of his lover, Ms Lindelani Nengovhela, better known as Mme a Muofhe on social media. Her body was found in a water-filled trench at the comedian’s house in Mangondi on 28 January this year. The incident happened a day after Lindelani had agreed to withdraw the assault charges she had laid against Madadzhe. A celebratory party with friends was held at the couple’s home that night. What had happened to her before her death is not known.

The late woman’s sister, Ms Sylvia Nengovhela, said the family was content with the postponement. “We have full faith in the justice system. The wheels of justice may be slow, but we believe that justice will be served in the end. We are only worried about the behaviour of the suspect, who was smiling as if nothing has happened,” she said.

Madadzhe’s legal representative, Advocate Ntsako Hlungwani, also welcomed the postponement. “I am very hopeful that my client will walk free. The mere fact that there are queries in the investigation is a clear sign that something is not right. We will wait and see if the case will stand or not,” he said.

We are just happy that the police are assisting, and we are hopeful that they will bring all their resources and do what they did in KwaZulu-Natal during the floods,” he said. Meanwhile, the Tshaulu police have launched a search and are asking the community for assistance to help them locate the missing boy. Rilise is dark-skinned and was wearing red clothes at the time of his disappearance.

A dispute over who may occupy stands in areas under control of a traditional leader flared up in Maila Village. A resident is claiming that the local vhamusanda had resold his site to another person, who has now gone ahead and developed it.

Mr Oliver Nthabalala, who claims to be a resident of Maila village, alleges that he had paid R3 000 to Vhamusanda Vho-Khishimusi Nthabalala for his site and that he had also had to pay the tribal council their fees. He subsequently put up a fence around the site.

Nthabalala told Limpopo Mirror that he was surprised to arrive at the stand, only to find that a certain Mr Timpson Sithole had started to take down his fence. He was also prevented from occupying what he believes to be his site. Sithole told him that he had bought the stand from the local traditional leader.

“I am the rightful owner, and this stand belongs to me. So, I cannot just keep quiet when Sithole takes my stand without permission. I warned him not to start erecting a fence until these

issues are sorted,” he said. He referred Limpopo Mirror to the tribal authority that controls the land to confirm whom the site belongs to.

When contacted about the dispute, the secretary of the Nthabalala Tribal Council, Mr Patrick Mukwevho, said that Nthabalala was the rightful owner of the stand. He said Nthabalala had followed the correct procedures when buying the stand.

“The stand belongs to Oliver,” said Mukwevho. He said the tribal council was not aware of the sale of the stand to Sithole and this transaction had not been registered at the tribal council’s office. “We are not aware of the sale. We have launched an investigation into

how the stand was sold,” he said. “We summoned the two to the tribal council, and told Sithole to remove his fence and go and talk to the Vhamusanda,” said Mukwevho.

Timpson Sithole was adamant that he had legally bought the stand from Vhamusanda Nthabalala. He said he had paid R9 000 for the stand and received an invoice. He is still waiting for his permission-to-occupy (PTO) letter. Sithole said that if they wanted him to vacate the site, the Vhamusanda must pay his money back.

Limpopo Mirror tried several times to contact Vhamusanda Vho-Khishimusi Nthabalala, but his phone just kept on ringing.

Families complain and say Univen demolished their ancestral graves

The University of Venda (Univen) is being accused of demolishing ancestral graves to make way for buildings and roads recently. Now, these families want the remains of their forefathers to be reburied.

The families claim that they had been relocated from Marude Mpandani, next to Univen, to Ngovhela and Maungani during the apartheid era in the 1960s. Their ancestors’ graves, however, were left behind. When development for Univen started in 1982, many of these graves had apparently been demolished and now, they say, more graves have been flattened to pave a road.

Mr Thomas Ndonyana (73), who used to live in this area, is still fuming about his family’s grave site that had allegedly been demolished by Univen officials. He said he had only discovered that the graves had been removed to make way for the building of Univen in 1986. “This is a double blow for my family, who first had been forcefully removed from the area by the apartheid government in the 1960s. We do not even know what happened to the remains of my forefathers. I have sleepless nights about this. I used to visit the grave site regularly because this portion of land belonged to my family. I was shocked when I found out

that the graves were no longer here,” said Ndonyana.

He said the gravesite was of importance to them as this was the only place where they could communicate with their ancestors and inform the ancestors of a new birth in the family.

“The gods are very angry, and it is only a matter of time before they listen to our prayers and deal with these dirty people, who are only after money,” he said.

According to Ndonyana, he was given the run around when he enquired as to who was responsible for removing what was once his family’s gravesite. He said they had had numerous discussions with Univen officials on this matter, but that no agreement had been reached. Now, he said, the families needed to be compensated because their rights had been violated.

Another family member who had been relocated from the area back then, Pastor Thizwilondwi Matodzi, was also unhappy. “My family lived here for years before we were moved in the period between 1961 and 1969 to go and reside at Ngovhela, Maungani and other areas. The government didn’t care that we had been living here for years and they forcefully removed us.”

Matodzi claims that bulldozers had dug up the remains of the dead when they started building a new road

last year. “These remains were taken to another place where they were reburied by the municipality without consulting the families. All we want now is to have the remains dug up again and reburied with dignity where they belong.”

Matodzi also claimed that buildings had been built inside the gravesite. “I am hurt and angry. This is an attack on my family. They have no respect for the dead,” he said.

The spokesperson for Univen, Mr Takalani Dzaga, said that they had met with families on different occasions and requested them to come and identify their ancestral graves. He denied that the buildings and road were built on top of the gravesite but said Univen would erect a plaque containing the names of the deceased.

Academy ready for BTEC Level 3

The Champions Transformation Academy launched their BTEC Level 3 vocational programme during a gala dinner that was hosted by the academy at Schoemansdal Environmental Education Centre (EEC) last Friday.

This extended diploma course, offered by well-established company Pearson, offers a comprehensive vocational programme for Grade 11 and 12 students in the 16-to-19 age group who either wish to pursue a career via higher education to access graduate entry or through direct employment in the work sector.

The academy, in conjunction with the local circuit office of the Department of Education, will select 20 students to take part in the programme. These

students will all have to attend an orientation camp from 11 to 14 July at Schoemansdal EEC for the final evaluation and selection of the students to be registered at the academy next year.

In Vhembe District, this is the first of its kind. The circuit manager of Soutpansberg East, Mr Falaza Baloyi, welcomed the launch. “All along the education system has been chasing up for certificates, ignoring the skills part, and as a result we have many certificated learners who are not working because they do not have the skills.”

Baloyi said that they would choose learners who showed an ability to cope with the skills training programme academically.

According to Mr Graham Temlett, national coordinator of the Pearson BTEC Level

3, most education systems in the world prepare students academically, yet these learners have no practical skills using their hands. “BTEC helps learners to choose a career in their natural abilities. They are then educated practically, partnering with other stakeholders like the Department of Education, business fraternity and community leaders,” he said.

Ms Sonja Prinsloo, the principal of the academy, encouraged the community and businesspeople to work together for this programme to be a success. “We all need solutions. If we all sit at the table together and combine what we have, we can make a difference.”

Prinsloo said they were currently focusing on learners from Madombidzha, Vele and areas close to Louis Trichardt town.

Ngwenani Ha-Themeli village’s new traditional leader installed

Vhamusanda Vho-Ratshinyiwaho II Themeli was installed as new traditional leader for Ngwenani Ha-Themeli, near Ngovhela, on Saturday, 27 May. Hundreds of people gathered at the Ngwenani Ha-Themeli Sports Grounds to witness the installation.

Thovhele Mailausumbwa Midiyavhathu Tshivhase, who conducted the installation himself, told the gathering that the new traditional leader would be called Ratshinyiwaho.

only derailed service delivery. “Communities need water, electricity and better roads, but when a clan is in dispute, no one has the authority to lead the people as there is no legitimate ruler. I have installed a new traditional leader here at Ngwenani Ha-Themeli, which means that Vhamusanda Ratshinyiwaho II Themeli is now the legitimate ruler of this village and people should respect him and his council,” he said.

Tshivhase advised the new ruler to forgive those who had fought with him and taken him to court, arguing that he was not the real heir to the throne. Instead, he said, the new traditional leader must work with them for the development of his village.

Lavhelesani Themeli, who has now stepped down as acting traditional leader of Ngwenani Ha-Themeli village, said he was happy that, after the chieftainship disputes, Vhamusanda Ratshinyiwaho II Themeli was finally installed as the rightful heir to the throne.

“It has been a difficult journey for me since the death of Vhamusanda Mugowashango Themeli in 2020, because there had been so much infighting for the throne. I used to pray to God that the family squabbles must come to an end, and we finally got our rightful heir,” said Lavhelesani Themeli. He pledged to work with and support the new chief.

Blasher releases third album, Mafhungo Anga

House music sensation Blasher’s third album, Mafhungo anga, is receiving rave reviews from music fans. The 15-track House offering comes almost three years after his first two albums, Something Special and Shudu, were released in 2020, and already enjoys lots of airplay on local radio stations.

Blasher, who was born Tshililo Majara, hails from Elim. “I grew up listening to the likes of Bishop Roxley Masevhe and Colbert Mukwevho, who have been role models to me and have inspired me a lot. They played music that could soothe the soul, and this grew in me, so that I told myself that I would play the same type of music someday,” he said.

The new offering boasts powerful tracks such as Mulilo, Novhanitshimparapfara, Vhona Murena and Asiuri ndolata. Blasher’s thrilling

voice and guitar playing skills contribute greatly to his unique sound.

“What I like about my music is that all my songs carry powerful messages that my fans can easily relate to. I am determined to give them a different experience, no matter what the odds are.”

Blasher said that, as much as he enjoyed dishing out good music, he was also worried about the fake music industry that was rapidly mushrooming in Limpopo, and music pirates (Ama Ten Ten) who were robbing musicians of their livelihood. “There are no more music shops around Louis Trichardt and Elim because they cannot compete with these ruthless thieves who sell our music at next to nothing. Many in this industry have lost their jobs and artists are now at the receiving end as their music is found on pavements,” he said.

Given Da Chief impresses fans with his debut single

Mutheiwana Given Nganeyavhutshilo, also known as Given Da Chief, came crashing onto the music scene with his debut single, Goni, last week. The 23-year-old artist from Tshifura has received an astounding response from music lovers since its release on Friday, 19 May.

The song, which features a star-studded line-up that includes Una Rams, Gusba Banana and J-Smash, is an anthem that celebrates unity. According to the artist, it delves into personal narratives and acts as a prayer of gratitude to the divine, while seeking protection from the challenges faced by society.

“The unbelievable support and love I have been receiving from my fans are truly remarkable. This song’s infectious energy has taken over the airwaves in a short space of time; even the local radio stations seem entranced by its charm. I feel really blessed,” he said.

Young Fhulufhelo speaks out against women and child abuse

Fulufhelo Ndou, a 17-year-old upcoming poet from the region, has taken to heart the effects that the abuse against women and children are having on society. This has prompted her to pen down a poem, titled Gender-based Violence, which she recited for the first time during a women’s function that was held at Lwamondo on Saturday, 27 May.

The Grade 11 learner from Khwevha Commercial High School in Tshisahulu left a deep impression on the women in attendance and received loud cheers and wild applause after her performance.

Fulufhelo said she was concerned about the spiralling abuse she saw around her, especially against women and children, which had become like a terminal disease in communities.

We should all shout out with one voice that we are tired; this must come to an end,” she said. Fulufhelo said her passion for poetry had truly been ignited while she had attended Tshedza Comprehensive School and had been selected to take part in the Baswa le Metse competition to represent Vhembe at provincial level and had come second. “I have never looked back and will keep on preaching the gospel wherever I get a platform to do so. I have composed enough material to fill a book, but I still lack the financial support to help get my work published, so that I can reach a wider audience. Vendaboy Poet inspires me, and it is my wish to one day meet him, so that we can discuss poetry. This would be a dream come true for me,” she said.

Given Da Chief’s music style can be described as a mix between New Age Trap and gritty rap, which he aptly refers to as “Trap Dza Zwitangani”.

His journey into music began at the young age of 14, when he and a group of friends formed the dynamic collective known as GFS. This early experience ignited his passion for creating music and set the stage for his future endeavours.

He draws inspiration from acclaimed artists such as Kendrick Lamar and Gidi Boy, who showcase innovative storytelling prowess. He believes that his distinctive vocal presence and ability to weave captivating narratives through his lyrics are what set him apart. “My aim is to reflect the realities of my surroundings and connect with the audience by articulating their desires and experiences. Currently, I am hard at work on my upcoming EP, which will mark an exciting milestone in my music career,” he said.

Vhembe FM’s Mikiele Dama is living his dream behind theradio microphone

From a very young age, Mikiele Dama always dreamed about sitting behind a microphone, and today, he is an accomplished radio presenter at Vhembe FM, hosting the Vhurangane show airing Mondays to Fridays, from 06:00 to 10:00.

Dama (24) was born in Phiphidi village. He started his education at Ratshitanga Primary and finished his matric at Denga Tshivhase Secondary.

He recalls his first intro-

duction to radio, at Nzhelele FM in 2018. “When the station was conceived, I had a feeling that it would be a stepping stone towards the realisation of my future dreams. I knew I was at the right place at the right time, and I wasted no time,” he said.

When asked what the secret to his success as radio presenter was, he said: “The most important thing is to engage with your listeners on issues that affect them on a daily basis. You must come up with something unique that will compel your listen-

ers not to change the dial. My recipe for more listenership is to give them more unique local content that they will not find anywhere else.”

Dama has a special message for aspiring radio presenters. “We all come from humble beginnings, and we don’t become perfect all at once. The more time you spend in this industry, the better you become at what you do, but you must be willing to learn and accept your mistakes in order to improve your skills.”

He encourages young people to always keep

themselves up to date with his shows, so that they do not remain ignorant in a society where knowledge plays such an essential role. “Ignorance is no excuse. Young people need to take full responsibility for their own lives, or else they will find themselves living unfulfilled lives,” he said.

Dama expressed his appreciation to the management at Vhembe FM for trusting him enough to offer him a stint with them in 2022. “I have now become a friend to thousands of listeners out there,” he said.

“Whether you switch the radio on, read the newspaper or watch television, the killing or abuse of women and children is always the main headline. When is all this going to end, and women and children left alone to live in peace? As women we have had enough. We all have to stand up and fight this disease together. If we keep quiet, who is going to speak for us?

I can help you scare the film fundis, says young special-effects artist

a very talented special-effects make-up artist who has been trying to break into the film industry for years, but she says no one is willing to give her a chance.

In 2015, the young artist graduated with a diploma in makeup artistry from The Face to Face Beauty & Make-up Design School in Northwest, Potchefstroom. She became a qualified somatologist and beauty specialist, specialising in fashion make-up, special-effects makeup, massages, nails, and reflexology.

After completing her studies, Mabirimisa returned to her hometown to set up her own practice, despite the challenges of starting such a business in

a small town. “It was never my dream to become a beauty specialist, but when I completed my matric, I didn’t want to just sit at home, so I decided to enrol at the school. Now I have fallen deeply in love with this career, especially the special effects,” she says.

Mabirimisa (27) has spent a lot of time practising and perfecting her talent by doing her own makeup. She says that to apply make-up takes her about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the kind of make-up the client wants. She is determined to make a difference in her own community, but she is not receiving the recognition and support she had hoped for.

“The biggest challenge I am facing is references. I have the qualification, but I haven’t worked with any high-profile or recognized TV/film companies, and I am struggling to break into the industry. I want to showcase my work and talent for creating wounds and

other special effects and bringing them to life with make-up. I have learned so many different techniques. If I can only get into the film industry, it will also inspire and put our Venda people on the map again,” she said.

Listeners experience first-hand that a healthy body harbours a healthy mind

A large group of people from around the Vhembe area joined the team from Phalaphala FM for a health walk and some aerobics exercises this past weekend. The event, which was hosted by Phalaphala FM in partnership with Thavhani Mall in Thohoyandou, was held at the mall on Saturday, 27 May.

The radio station’s programme manager, Ms Sharon Ravele, said the main idea of this annual event was to keep the people fit and teach them about health. This was their third event, and Ravele was happy with the attendance. “I commend the elderly for keeping fit. They are not only winding time up by [doing] aerobics but keeping their bodies healthy. Remember that a healthy body has a healthy mind. These elders in their golden years are shunning the stigma that goes with old age. Let us do away with the idea that old people are supposed to sit at home, doing nothing until sunset,” Ravele said.

Pensioner from Muhuyu publishes her first collection of poems

from Muhuyu village is proof that no age limit exists for writing poetry.

The 70-year-old pensioner experienced a very proud moment when she finally released her first book of poems, titled

Zwamashango, in February this year.

Ramenu started writing and reciting her Tshivenda poems a long time ago, but never published any of them, until now. She said she was completely overwhelmed by the welcoming response she had received from members of the public since her book had been published. “Growing up in a poor village was tough, but I was determined to make something of my life. I grew up in an area where there were very few role models, so writing this book really means a lot - not only to me‚ but to the people in my village. I want to show the young ones growing up that nothing is impossible,” she said.

Her poems were inspired by her own life experiences and observations over the years. Her wish is to see more people attain prosperity, despite the misfortune of having been raised in the poverty-stricken conditions their parents found themselves in.

“Entering the market as an elderly and first-time writer was difficult. I think many publishers prefer people who write in a particular way‚ or authors who have previously written books, presuming that they are guaranteed to make money. But we all have to start somewhere. This book is selling very well. People find it appealing to their everyday lives, and I am very happy for that,” she said.

Teenagers to release their Venrap debut album

Two 16-year-old boys from the dusty village of Mukula have just finished recording their first Venrap Hip-hop album, called Vhutshilo, and plan on releasing it after the coming school holidays.

Thompho Gadivhana, aka Molshe TG, and Lufuno Mushayavhathu, aka Zwanga Tee, both Grade 10 pupils at Mukula Secondary School, are currently busy studying for their midyear examinations.

Speaking to Limpopo Mirror after a performance at a well-known complex in the village on Saturday, 27 May, they said everything had started when they had formed a dance group called The African Boys in 2020, when they had been 13 years old.

“At first, we only danced at social gatherings and local taverns, imitating guys like Lil Wayne and

Drake. Then, in 2021, we started writing our own songs, with the idea of recording our own album. We have already recorded 18 songs, but we are releasing only six now to test the market,” said Molshe TG.

When asked if they would like to be professional musicians in the future, Zwanga Tee said they were determined to work very hard to make an impact in the music industry. “But we plan on finishing school first and having professions, because anything can happen in the music industry. We must have something to fall back on if things do not go according to our expectations in the entertainment industry.”

These two young musicians are also in the process of making a movie, but they say they will need sponsorship to purchase good cameras first.

“Either way, we are determined to make it with the few resources

we have at our disposal at the moment.”

The boys want to encourage other youths to think about doing something creative for the future.

“As youths, we should refrain from taking drugs and alcohol, and participate in things that are beneficial to the community,” they said.

She encouraged them to continue participating in exercises and lead active lives. “By maintaining an active lifestyle, you set a very good example to your children and grandchildren. They will hopefully follow in your footsteps. At this age, you must focus on positive things, rather than worry about things that you cannot change. Although several of these ladies are of advanced age, keeping fit also shows that they are still young in spirit.”

Ms Tinny Manwadu from Thavhani Mall’s marketing team said they had noticed positive changes in the lives of many elderly people since they had started this event, and that they were very happy with the progress. “We all need healthy bodies to do our work properly, and some of us are inviting diseases that could be avoided just by exercising. The more we grow, the more we can make a positive change in our lives,” she said.

Nenweli wants to grow tombstone business into national franchise

The high unemployment rate in South Africa is making it very difficult for young people to further their education. While some hang onto the hope that a degree or diploma will secure them decent positions in the corporate world, many drop out altogether before completing their studies as they feel doing so has no point if

they will not get employed anyway.

Then there are those who are really serious about making a life for themselves, despite the situation in the country, and their determination and will not only to survive but to succeed get them there – even if this might take some time.

When Selby Nenweli (33) from Itsani Tshitavhani village completed his matric,

he enrolled at Makwarela TVET college for his diploma in mechanical engineering. While he was still studying, though, he joined his uncle, who ran a company that made tombstones.

“I had already come to realise that it is not easy to get any form of employment – even with a diploma - so I decided to prepare myself for life after my studies,” said Nenweli. Completing his studies in 2015, he went into the tombstone-making business full-time the following year. Today, he runs his own business, Tsetsetse Tombstone, from his backyard at home. “With limited capital at hand, I could not afford to establish the business at a business centre. But my dream is to see my business grow, so that I can relocate to a bigger place where my customers can freely and comfortably access us.”

Nenweli says his biggest challenges are that customers do not take his business seriously, as he runs it from home, and that he is unable to put in bigger orders for granite to make more tombstones, because of limited space.

His business is already benefiting the community as he currently employs four permanent and two part-time workers. At the moment, he delivers his tombstones to the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.

Tshikhwani businessman, Murapuo Masala honoured for contributions

On Saturday, 13 May, retired businessman Murapuo Masala was honoured by the Pastors Community Concerned Group in Madombidzha for the good work he has done in the communities around the Kutama and Nzhelele areas.

One of Madabani village’s oldest residents, Ms Munzhedzi Ramuedzisi (104), was buried at Madabani cemetery on Saturday, 27 May. She died at her home after a long illness.

The granny was described as a humble and peace-loving person who had been a role model, not only in her own family, but also to many others in the village. Her family celebrated her life by dancing and singing at the graveyard.

One of Ramuedzisi’s children, Ms Elisa Makatu, told Limpopo Mirror that she had been a very special kind of person. “We thank God for giving us a wonderful mother who has been there for us throughout the years. Her having passed on at the age of 104 only proves

that our mother was a very special woman who was protected by God for good reasons. She worked hard for her family and provided for fellow community members because she had a good and generous heart. My mother encouraged us to work hard for ourselves. She used to say that wealth comes from the soil. We will always remember her love and advice. She was a wise woman who could help everyone with her wisdom and knowledge,” she said.

One of the respected local politicians, Mr Rufus Selepe, said he had learnt of Ramuedzisi’s passing with shock. “We have lost a great advisor whose knowledge of our culture and traditions will be sorely missed. It is a pity that Ramuedzisi died before we could sit down with her and document everything, so that her valuable knowledge

can be passed on to the next generation. May her soul rest in peace,” he said.

Business Forum calls for support

The chairperson of the Thulamela Local Business Forum, Mr Ntsieni Mbulungeni, is calling on members of the community to support local businesses to boost the local economy.

Addressing more than 100 local businesspeople, members of the cloth, and university student bodies from all over the province during a business exhibition, hosted by Punda Maria Nails, Bricks, Paving and Sand Supply at the company’s headquarters in Ha-Makhuvha Tshilivho village on Friday morning (19 May), Mbulungeni said local businesses were dying because of a lack of support from the local communities.

The owner of Punda Maria Nails, Bricks, Paving and Sand Supply, Genl Abel Nelwamondo, who is still a member of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), has started a business by making nails and supplying bricks. He said he never resigned from the force but was given leave by SANDF to concentrate on his own businesses. “I wanted to resign, but the defence force refused. They allowed me to focus on my businesses, but whenever they need me, I am always available,” he said.

Delegates were taken on an exhibition tour around the business premises, where they were shown how nails and zincs are made.

In an interview with Limpopo Mirror, Nelwamondo said that all the machines in the business had been bought in China, where he had lived for eight years as a diplomat. “To be honest, it is because of the grace of God that I have managed to build this business empire. To all members of the community I say, if you pray and ask God to help you to make it in business, He will bless you with whatever you need.”

He never stopped thinking of ways to help the local residents achieve their dreams. In the 1980s, businesses in this area were also supplying limited products, so Masala later opened several supermarkets in Nzhelele, Tshiozwi, Madombidzha and Vivo, which supplied a variety of products that were not regularly found in the other local stores. He also established a restaurant and a soft-drink depot in the Tshikhwani area.

Noticing that many of the residents had to travel all the way to Sibasa for driving lessons, he further established a driving school in Kutama, his home village.

Thus, Masala kept himself busy over the years, making a remarkable difference in the lives of the communities around him.

Asked how he managed to keep his businesses running so successfully over the years, Masala said everything came down to customer care. “Remember, for the business to thrive, a businessman must serve customers in a fast and respectable manner. Listen to the customers’ complaints and attend to them humanely,” he said.

In 2015, at the age of 80, he finally decided that the time had come to rest. Today, his children run his businesses.

“It is unbelievable that our communities support businesses from outside our country and our municipality. Some of the foreign businessmen do not even bank their money in this country. They take all your money to their own countries. Without your support, local businesses will not be able to create employment and empower our people. It is time that we work together with our own municipalities in order

Learners of Malamulele High now have school to be proud of

The R22 million state-ofthe-art Malamulele High School that was built by the Department of Education, in conjunction with the Independent Development Trust (IDT), was handed over to the learners and community of Malamulele by the MEC for Education, Ms Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, on Wednesday, 24 May.

Lerule-Ramakhanya said that the project would go a long way in restoring the dignity of the black child. “On the 30th of March 2023, when I presented the budget speech

at the provincial legislature, I declared that 2023/24 would be the year for school infrastructure. I also made mention that among the schools that I will be handing over to the community is Malamulele High, and we are here to do just that,” she said.

Lerule-Ramakhanya added that the high number of burglaries and thefts in some of the schools in the province was a cause for serious concern. She called on the support of the parents, guardians, community safety structures, pastors and civic structure to assist them in instilling and maintaining discipline in their schools.

The event was held at the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital, where nurses from the local hospital, surrounding clinics and Correctional Services joined in the commemoration.

“Every year we commemo-

rate the passing on of nurses. We have experienced pandemics like Covid-19, and recently there is a looming outbreak of cholera. Nurses are always the frontline workers. They dedicate their lives to serving the people. Some die in the line of duty, so it is important to remember them,” said Mr Harrison Khosa, spokesperson for the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital.

Princess Anne Sheilah Makhado (73) was one of the guests who gave a keynote address. Makhado served as a nurse at several hospitals around the Vhembe District and the Eastern Cape. She started her career as a nurse in 1977 and retired in 2013.

Addressing the nurses, she

said: “You are the future of the nation. Many nurses die in the line of duty, but please do not lose hope. As long as you have hope, you will be able to carry out your duties diligently,” she said. Makhado called on the President to appoint MECs for nurses as she believes this will help to solve many of the challenges they face in their work.

The Isa Mathivha Foundation issued 20 certificates to 20 nurses who formed part of the Covid-19 team. “We partnered with the Department of Health to show our appreciation of these nurses’ work. We encourage you to continue with the good work you are doing,” said Mr Pfarelo Mathivha, director of the foundation.

The chief executive officer of the IDT, Mr Tebogo Malaka, said that when they had first been approached by the provincial Department of Education, they had immediately understood that this would have to be a state-ofthe-art school – not just for the current learners, but also for future generations, to contribute to the advancement of learning and teaching.

The principal of Malamulele High, Mr Isaac Nkuna, was ecstatic about the school, which he said would definitely go a long way in motivating the learners to produce astonishing results.

Hawks pounce on micro cash-loan business at Tlakula Shopping Centre

The Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit in Limpopo was applauded after a micro cash-loan business in Elim that was allegedly not properly registered was raided last week.

Money borrowers have been complaining about Mbhazima Cash Loans at the Tlakula Shopping Complex in Elim for months. The complaints include allegations that the company had been charging them very high interest rates and insisted on keeping their clients’ personal documents such as identity books and SASSA and bank cards to secure repayment.

Bring Mutale Municipality back, says SANCO

The secretary of the Thulamela sub-region of the SA National Civics Organisation (SANCO), Ben Phosiwa, said that at their general council meeting, held on 29 April, a decision was taken that the government should reinstate the Mutale Municipality.

After the previous local government elections in 2016, sections of the Mutale Municipality were moved to the Thulamela and Musina municipalities, while some villages from the Vuwani area were removed from the Thulamela and Makhado municipalities to form the new Collins Chabane Municipality.

When this decision was made, the people of Vuwani

area went on the rampage and protested fiercely. The protests had a big impact on learning and teaching in the area, with more than 20 schools being burnt down in the process. Learners were unable to attend school for more than 70 school days.

Mr Phosiwa said that the SANCO members had now made an equivocal decision to demand back the Mutale Municipality and that the people of Vuwani be moved back under both the Makhado and Thulamela municipalities for the sake of delivering services to the local people by the local municipality. “The closing of the Mutale Municipality under the pretext of underperformance and lack of resources was an oversight and human error. We are therefore plead-

ing with the powers that be to reverse this decision and reinstate the municipality,” he said.

When asked what would happen if the government refused to meet SANCO’s demands, as had happened before in 2016, Mr Phosiwa

Limpopo Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Matimba Maluleke said that, when the team arrived at the business offices, they found the workers busy lending money out to people and confiscating their documents. The team seized 47 SASSA cards, eight Easypay green cards, seven Classic Sure cards, 72 miscellaneous bank cards, 389 identity documents, five disability agreement files, 21 old-age files, 18 child-support-grant agreement files, 33 worker-agreement files, one cash-loan register, and one NuPay speed point. “No one was arrested during the operation as the owner of the business was not found; however, she is being traced,” said Maluleke.

The management at the Tlakula Shopping Complex refused to comment.

Provincial Head of the Limpopo Hawks Major-General Gopz Govender conveyed his appreciation to the team for their successful execution of the task. “We are determined to deal with all lawbreakers, including those who are stealing from the poorest of the poor,” he said.

Maindis Ladies on the road to Durban to try and restore some lost pride

This weekend will be a busy one for the teams campaigning under the banner of the Hollywoodbets Super League. Four matches will be played at different venues countrywide on Saturday afternoon. The same number of matches will be played the following day.

After donating significant league points to TUT Football Club, to whom they lost 0-2 at the Giyani Stadium last Saturday, Maindis Ladies will be on the road this weekend. They will undertake a journey to Durban. Their match against Royal AM will be played at the Chatsworth Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

A quick glance at the track records of the two teams shows that Maindis will be lucky if they manage to come back home with a point in hand. While Royal AM are closely contesting for the league championship, the situation is totally different at the Bungeni side. Maindis are currently lying at the bottom of the log standings with six points, while Royal AM are in the fifth spot.

Two for Joy and Morning Stars in local derby

With the teams playing their second-round league matches, Maindis must take the matter seriously if escaping the relegation axe at the end of the season is part of their plan. The chairman of the club, Mr Falaza Mdaka, has assured the team’s supporters that they are doing everything possible in a bid to change the team’s fortunes in their remaining fixtures. He said that they intended to sign a number of seasoned players when the transfer window opened next month.

Stars too strong for the Angry Lions

Mubva All Stars beat Madombidzha Angry Lions 3-1 in their semi-final match of the Mathoho Cup that was played at Ravele on Sunday.

The players nearly spoiled

the game by demonstrating their rough tackles in the opening minutes. The referee, Madala Kutama, calmed the situation by flashing three yellow cards in quick succession.

Lions should have been the first to find the net. Their

diminutive striker, Cyphus Musobi, was unfortunate to see his volley go a little wide. Surprise Sadiki scored Star’s opening goal after picking up a beautiful pass from Fhatani Raulinga in the 28th minute.

Sedzani Mashau of Lions was brought down inside of the penalty area and the referee pointed to the white spot. Lufuno Maruli finished it off. The score was 1-1 at the end of the first half.

Stars were awarded a free kick outside the penalty box in the 74th minute. Lavhelesani Netshituni scored the second goal for Stars from the free kick.

Stars continued to dictate terms in all departments. Clement Mabasa scored their third goal after some dual moves with Kuvhanganani Rambau.

Lions should have reduced the margin late in the game, but Tanganedzani Netshikulwe shot wide with only the keeper to beat. Stars will meet Tshiozwi Mates in the final match.

Audale FC booted out of Nwali Cup

Audale FC will not take part in the next round of the Nwali Soccer Tournament. They were booted out by Mukula Young Santos, who crushed them 4-3 in their opening match that was played at the Khubvi Benjie’s Grounds on Saturday.

The game was a thriller from the onset to the end. Young Santos could have sealed the game within the first 30 minutes, had their strikers not been unlucky at the goal finish. Their left winger, Tshilisanani Phalanndwa, was unlucky in the seventh minute. He went loose from the left corner and unleashed a half volley from the

edge of the box. The ball missed the target by inches, much to the disappointment of the team’s enthusiastic fans.

The team’s captain, Vhahangwele Tshifhango, suffered the same pain a little later. He tried his luck with a half volley from the 25-metre area. The ball hit the side net and landed outside the field of play for a goal kick.

Audale were the first to blow the trumpet. They were awarded a penalty after a defender of Santos had handled the ball within his own box. Fhumulani Munyai made no mistake from the white spot.

Santos found the equaliser in the 78th minute. Vhahangwele Tshifhango was on target after some promising moves with Xinavona Chauke and Mpho Mphephu in the middle of the park.

The score was still 1-1 when the referee blew the final whistle. The winner was determined through a penalty shootout. Santos managed to convert three from the penalty spot while Audale could score only twice.

Tshiozwi Mates qualified for the final of the Mathoho Competition in Stream E after beating Greenway Academy 5-4 at the Ravele grounds on Sunday. The two teams played to goalless draw and the winner had to be determined by penalty shoot-out.

Greenway were superior regarding ball possession, but their strikers seemed to be shy when they approached their opponents’ danger area. They threatened to score in the 16th minute, when Khuliso Mulaudzi received a neat pass from Mudodzwa Nemutshovha but fumbled at the goal finish.

Katlego Makhubela, Greenway’ midfielder, was a marvel to watch. He was everywhere, distributing promising balls from

the middle of the park, while also playing as a full striker.

Mates effected two changes in the 65th minute. They introduced Tumelo Mutandari and Tumisang Mamorobela for Matodzi Makongoza and Rembuluwani Matumba respectively. Greenway exhausted their substitution chances by binging on Katlego Mashego and Mwrarube for Mahada Mahada and Prince

Mates’ last scoring chance came in the 84th minute when Muhangwi Mukosi faced the keeper and pushed the ball forward to Tumisang Mamorobela, instead of taking the responsibility himself.

This notice is hereby made in terms of section 27(1) of the Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act, 2013, read together with section 20(1) of the Collins Chabane Land Use Management By-Law, 2018, that the Collins Chabane Local Municipality is reviewing its current Land Use Scheme. The purpose of the Land Use Scheme is to regulate the use of land, assign development rights and to determine the development rules and procedures for all land in the municipal area. Rockers through to the next round

Rockers FC secured a place in the last-16 round of the prestigious Nwali Soccer Tournament when they crushed Tshandama Try Together 3-2 in their opening match at the Khubvi Benjie’s Grounds on Saturday.

Realising that they had trouble matching their opponents from Makwarela Township, Try Together abandoned their positions and packed themselves at the far back and relied on counter-attacks. This gave Rockers an opportunity to attack, and they took only nine minutes to stamp their authority. Their Rastafarian striker, Rotondwa Rammela, was on target with a half volley after receiving a beautiful pass from Mpho Khorommbi.

The goal seemed to be a wakeup call to the Tshandama players. They regrouped from behind and started to play attacking football, but only for a moment. Rockers increased the lead in the 28th minute. Rilwele Magada went loose from the right corner and blasted in a rocket from inside the box. Tshandama pulled one back towards the end of the first half. Their centre forward, Ampfarisaho Mugwedi, found the net with a header.

The last half was characterised by futile goal attempts. Tshandama threatened to score three times within a short

space of time. That prompted Rockers’ technical staff to effect three changes to their starting line-up. They replaced Tshifhiwa Phophi, Rilwele Magada and Mpho Khorommbi with Kagiso Legodi, Vele Mahalihali and Thinandavha Mahase respectively. Tshandama responded by introducing Fhumulani Nematondoni and Luvhengo

Mugwabana at the expense of Nhlanhla Mudau and Zwoluga Nedzanani.

Rockers found their third via Moyahabo Mamabolo later in the game. Tshandama did not give in without a fight. They scored their second through Luvhengo Mugwabana two minutes before the final whistle.

Musasenda Big Five boot Zwaloni out of the Nwali Tournament

Musasenda Big Five are still in joyous mood after beating Zwaloni United FC 1-0 in their opening match of the Nwali Soccer Tournament that was played at the Khubvi Benjie’s Grounds on Sunday afternoon.

Zwaloni were quickly on the attack, but their fighting spirit faded as the game progressed. They threatened to kill the Big Five within the first 15 minutes of the game, but their strikers let them down by shooting aimlessly at the goal finish.

Their first attempt was in the seventh minute when the team’s captain, Anaawe Begwa, forced his way through the defence of Musasenda and fumbled with the ball inside the penalty box. Zwaloni came close to scoring again in the 15th minute. This time around, their centre forward, Tsireledzo Makhari, caused an upset by holding on to the ball for far too long inside the penalty box before he unleashed.

Big Five came back into the game later in the first half. They created numerous scoring moves from the middle of the park, but finding their way through the defence was difficult for them.

Happy Boys and Santos in a Nwali tournament clash

The battle for the championship title will continue this weekend among the teams participating in the Nwali Soccer Tournament. All matches will be played at the Khubvi Benjie’s Grounds.

Four matches will be played on Saturday, with the same number of matches scheduled for Sunday. Saturday’s programme will start with the match between Tswera Hot Chilies and Nweli Stone Breakers. Rockers FC and Lukau Hot Aces will be on the field of play shortly after the opening game. Winning the match will not be easy for Lukau Hot Aces if the Rockers’ performance in their opening match against Tshandama Try Together is anything to go by. Tshandama were beaten 2-3 at the same venue last Saturday.

Santos beat Audale FC 4-3 in their opening match to secure a place in the last-16 round. Santos will pin their hopes on Rolivhuwa Nethengwe, Vhahangwele Tshifhango and Tshilisanani for goals. The second game will be between Berea FC and Makonde FC. Berea beat Marude Manchester United 2-1 on their way to the last-16 round.

Mubva All Stars Ladies win Pre-Cup tournament

Mubva All Stars Ladies were crowned the champions of the Hollywoodbets Women’s Development Soccer League Pre-Cup 2023 tournament. The final took place at the Mabaleng Sports Centre on Sunday (28th).

Mubva All Stars met the Hollywoodbets Mabaleng Development team in the final. When regulation time ended, the score was still 2-2. The match went into a penalty shootout, which was won 3-0 by Mubva All Stars.

“We had prepared well for the tournament a month before the actual matches took place, and it put us in a good position to win the

Pre-Cup Tournament,” said Mubva All Stars’ chairman, Mr Brutus Rambau.

Mr Nigel Naicker, the representative of Hollywoodbets, said that he was pleased with the way the tournament was run. The matches were also well attended by local soccer fans. The event was organised by Mamu Community Development.

The general secretary of Mamu, Mr Jafter Mamugudubi, said that they were pleased with the outcome of the Pre-Cup tournament. It served as preparation for the Hollywoodbets Women’s Development Soccer League. The new league will start in the first week of July and eight local women’s teams will participate.

Univen students clip the wings of Manamani Blue Birds and stay no 1

Univen FC wrapped up their Safa Vhembe regional league programme with a 2-0 victory over Manamani Blue Birds at the Univen campus stadium on Saturday. Univen finished their league programme on top of Stream D2 with 61 points with the victory.

Although they had already been declared the champions of the stream before Saturday’s game, Univen did not leave anything to chance. Instead, they took the game to the visitors from the start, giving the defenders of Blue Birds no time

to breathe.

The wheel of fortune turned against Blue Birds when the home side claimed the lead in the 19th minute. The students were awarded a free kick in the 20-metre area. Lesiba Moloto tried his luck with a half volley from the free kick. The keeper of Blue Birds, Wanga Sadiki, misjudged the flight of the ball and watched helplessly as it went far beyond his reach.

Being a champion doesn’t mean you have money, complains Raider

The SA Female Welterweight champion, Raider “The Earthquake” Muleba, is struggling to make ends meet, even though she is holding the national championship belt. The Tshifudi-based boxer said earlier this week that life was very hard for professional boxers who did not have sponsorships.

Muleba complained that boxing promoters do not remunerate female boxers like

they do with male boxers, and female professional boxers are scarce in the country, so getting fights is very difficult at the moment.

“Even when we get fights, promoters pay us peanuts. At the moment, I don’t even have enough training tracksuits. Sometimes I train with my formal clothes. I sometimes miss going to the gym because of [a lack of] transport fare. I even think of hanging up my boxing gloves and looking for another job to sustain myself,” she said.

Muleba is calling on the corporate world and the government to help her with a sponsorship to be able to train hard to defend her title. “We don’t even have a boxing gym in the Thulamela Municipality. We only enter a boxing ring when we participate in professional boxing tournaments. We train in halls with no boxing facilities, except boxing gloves and a punching bag. Mpheni Home Defenders are going all out to qualify for Motsepe league

The much-anticipated play-off matches in the ABC Motsepe League will start on 5 June. The tournament to decide who will go through, will be held at Durban’s Woodburn Stadium. Teams who were on top of their respective streams when the league programme came to a halt in May this year are gearing up for the annual event.

The nine teams that had secured places in the tournament have been divided into three groups. Mpheni Home Defenders will be representing

the Limpopo Province in the playoffs. In their first match, Home Defenders will face Mlambo Royal Cubs from Mpumalanga. The match is scheduled for 8 June and will start at 15:30. The next day, the team will come up against Orbit College.

The top teams from the three groups, together with the best runners-up, will meet in the semi-final stage on 9 June. The final will be played at the same venue on Sunday, 11 June. The best two teams in the tournament will be promoted to the Motsepe Foundation Championship Division.

Sidwell “Vhasadie” Phuravhathu, said that he was optimistic that the team would win next week’s matches and qualify for the semi-finals. He said that the players needed to focus on their mindsets.

”Football is about energy. You have to read the players’ energy. If they are getting too cocky, then bring them down to earth. If they are getting too anxious, then calm them down,” he explained. Phuravhathu appealed to the local football lovers to rally behind the team during the matches. He said that his team had never stopped training after playing their last league match early last month.
