Phiphidi Dam - is it filled with corpses?

Bertasi Maunya (23) left his home in Ngovhela Tshirembe on Saturday afternoon, 3 June, just as he had done on many Saturdays before. However, this time was different because he never returned. His lifeless body was discovered a week later, floating in the local Phiphidi Dam, a few kilometres from his home village.

Local residents who were boating on the dam made the gruesome discovery on Saturday, June 10. Bertasi’s body showed signs of bruising, and stones were found in his pockets. That he had been murdered was evident, a fact that caused shock and disbelief throughout the communities of Phiphidi and Ngovhela.

An executive member of the Phiphidi Civic, Mr Rudzani Jonathan Mathelemusa, expressed the community’s anger about the incident. “We are deeply disturbed as a community. Just imagine how heartless people can be, killing someone and weighing down their pockets with stones to ensure the body does not float. The killers wanted the body to be submerged and disappear completely, denying the family the opportunity to even bury their loved one. Consider the pain the family must be

enduring,” he said.

Mathelemusa conveyed his displeasure, mentioning that this was not the first time a body had been dumped in the dam. “It seems our dam has become a dumping ground for corpses. This must stop. The water is no longer clean, and we do not even know how many bodies are submerged here. With water being a scarce resource in this area, the community relies on this unclean water from the dam. We are also concerned that this incident further tarnishes the reputation of our village, which is already associated with crime,” Mathelemusa added.

Mr Wamashudu Muhali, the leader of the Ngovhela Civic and spokesperson for the Maunya family, expressed the devastating impact on the family. “Our hearts are torn apart. As a family and as a community, we are deeply wounded inside. Bertasi was a good young man who did not deserve to be brutally killed.”

According to Muhali, Bertasi seemed to have known his killers as he had confided in the family about a plot against his life before his death. “There are inconsistencies in this incident that need to be addressed, and as a community, we will come together to discuss and gain a clearer understanding. The truth

must be revealed, so that the family can find closure,” he stated.

Sergeant Vuledzani Dathi, the acting spokesperson for the Vhembe SAPS, confirmed the incident and stated that a murder case had been opened. “No arrests have been made yet, but we urge anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators to come forward,” he said.

Concern about CIT robberies at Thohoyandou centres

The police in Thohoyandou are investigating a cash-in-transit robbery at the busy Venda Plaza shopping complex on Wednesday, 7 June, where 10 masked robbers shot

and wounded two Fidelity guards before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, three security guards (from Fidelity Cash Solutions), one

being the driver, had just arrived at the Capitec Bank at the shopping complex at around 12:00. One of them, Mr Golden Nefale, allegedly got out of the company vehicle and started pushing a trolley loaded with suitcases of cash.

“He (Nefale) was shot in the back and stomach and his pistol was taken, while the other security officer, Mr Shadrack Jabulani (39), was shot twice in the right arm and his R4 rifle taken. When the driver of the Fidelity vehicle, Mr Joseph Ngoma, heard the gunshots, he sped off and drove directly to the Thohoyandou Police Station, as there was still a bulk [of] money inside the security vehicle,” said Ledwaba.

Former police officer Rasikhinya, who witnessed the incident, told the police that six of the ten masked male suspects had been carrying rifles, while four of them had had pistols. The CCTV footage

shows them fleeing the scene in a Ford Ranger open bakkie without number plates.

Ledwaba said the victims had been taken to the Tshilidzini Hospital with serious injuries. Eight rifle cartridges and four pistol cartridges were found at the scene, as well as two live rounds and a percussion cap.

No arrests had been made at the time of our going to press.

Another eyewitness, who does not want to be named, said she had just arrived to do her shopping at the shopping complex that day when she had heard the gunshots. “I did not know what was happening. I was so frightened, I nearly fainted. I just ran to the nearest shop around the plaza and hid myself. I regretted coming to the plaza. One does not feel safe to even do your shopping around Thohoyandou anymore because of the robberies and crime,” she said.

POPCRU president addresses local union members at show grounds

On Monday, 12 June, close to 100 members of the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) from the Vhembe District gathered at the Makhado Show Grounds to vent their grievances to the president of the union, Mr Zizamele Cebekhulu Makhaza.

Makhaza is going around the country addressing POPCRU members on, among others, pressing political and societal topics relevant to police and prison officials, and working conditions of members.

It’s Engedzani’s time to shine

A beautiful 19-year-old girl who is living with albinism, Engedzani Ndou from Dzimauli village, is very optimistic that she will impress the judges during the Mr and Miss Albinism South Africa Beauty Pageant to be held in September this year.

Engedzani said that despite the fact that some people still looked down on them because of how they looked, she knew that she was young, vibrant and beautiful.

The police in Thohoyandou are asking the public to assist them in tracing Mr Makhado Mashawana from Hamulima village. Vhembe SAPS acting spokesperson Sergeant Vuledzani Dathi said Mashawana had appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court in March this year. His case was postponed to a further date, but he absconded. “Mashawana, who was out on bail, did not come back to court on the specified date. A warrant of arrest has been authorised against him. Anyone who may see him or who may know his whereabouts can contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Mukwevho Mukondi, on

The members raised several matters that included salary increments, lack of resources such as police vehicles and manpower, bursaries offered by the union, long shifts, and promotions. They also insisted that the Makhado POPCRU branch be dissolved as they claimed that it was being poorly managed.

Addressing the delegates,

Makhaza said the union was surprised to hear police officers complain about a lack of manpower to fight crime. “Once a police member is promoted to a higher rank, he or she starts moving away from fighting crime on the ground. Go to the police headquarters in Pretoria in the morning or afternoon, when police members arrive or leave work for home. You would think police members will all be out to fight crime, but no. They will be sitting in offices while claiming to run short of manpower. These officials should go out in the field to fight crime. This is a matter that the union is busy addressing,” said Makhaza.

Regarding conditions of service, members wanted to know why the police or prison departments did not increase their salaries and then, at the end of the financial year, they returned the money to the treasury. Makhaza agreed. “We need qualified personnel to

handle the police and prisons’ purses. Most of the officials in these departments’ finance sector are not qualified for the job,” he said.

Prison officials raised the issue of 10-day working shifts, which Makhaza also agreed was problematic. He assured members that the matter was going to be resolved soon.

Some members said they would like to develop themselves but did not qualify for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme as they were working. Makhaza informed them that POPCRU has partnered with Old Mutual to extend bursaries to members, as well as the children of members who had died in the line of duty.

Regarding the Makhado POPCRU branch officials, Makhaza apologised to the members, saying that the officials who had been elected had never been empowered for their task.

On Tuesday (13 June) International Albinism Awareness Day was celebrated, to highlight the plight of people living with the genetic condition.

When asked if a stigma still existed about people living with albinism, Engedzani said that some people still regarded them as half-human beings, but things were better than before. She added that during her younger days, things had been really tough.

“I have two brothers who are also living with albinism. People used to laugh at us wherever we went. Even old people used to call us names. There was a time when I used to spend all my weekends at home, as I was afraid of being called names. I was also afraid of being abducted and killed for ritual purposes. I never thought that one day, I would live in an environment where I would feel safe and loved,” she said.

However, her life took a turn when her parents enrolled her in St Augustine, a private school. There she received acceptance and respect from most of her fellow students, although a few continued to taunt her. Currently, Engedzani is a first-year student at the University of Limpopo, pursuing a B. Pharm degree. Her university experience has exposed her to various opportunities, including participation in beauty contests. She has gained knowledge about suitable skin care products and encourages others with albinism to invest in quality products, as she can personally attest to their effectiveness.

Engedzani aspires to delve deeper into understanding albinism and wishes to advocate for the concerns she has suppressed for years. She has vowed never to remain silent when witnessing mistreatment of individuals with albinism. Engedzani is determined to fight for their rights until the world fully accepts them as equals.

For those interested in supporting Engedzani, they can vote for her by sending a “hi” message to her number, 060-6977993, to receive the voting link. Voting is free of charge.

Lambani Bridge finally opens

After a four-year wait, the Lambani Bridge has finally been completed and was officially opened to the public on Tuesday, 13 June. The construction of the bridge began in June 2019 with a budget of R17 million. However, due to construction errors, the project faced delays and took an additional three years to complete.

During the construction period, the community expressed their concerns about the bridge, including its levelness, cracks that needed fixing, insufficient width for two-way traffic, and doubts about the strength of the pillars. People feared that the bridge could collapse at any time. Despite these complaints, the bridge was finally presented to the residents, and an official opening ceremony was attended by traditional leaders

and community members from Ha-Lambani.

Thulamela Mayor Athingozwidivha Rammbuda, who cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony, expressed her happiness that the bridge would provide improved access for the community, especially during rainy weather. She also highlighted that the construction project provided temporary job opportunities for unemployed community members, allowing them to learn new skills related to bridge construction, soil erosion prevention, and water gabion building.

Mayor Rammbuda urged the communities to take responsibility for protecting the bridge and warned against any acts of vandalism. While Limpopo Mirror attempted to interview the mayor regarding the construction errors, she did not respond.

One former worker on the bridge expressed dissatisfaction with the construction, noting

Pensioner devastated and without home after dream house burns down

that the patched cracks made her doubt the bridge’s strength. She believed that heavy traffic could pose a risk to the bridge, especially as it was designed as a one-way structure on a twoway road.

However, the headman of the area, Mr Patrick Lambani, stated that the community had accepted the situation, acknowledging their limited engineering knowledge. He mentioned that despite their complaints, they had come to terms with the bridge as it is. He expressed satisfaction that the bridge would provide improved passage during rainy periods, unlike before when people had to wait for the rain to stop.

Overall, while some concerns and complaints about the construction errors and design of the bridge exist, the completion of the project has provided enhanced accessibility for the community.

Ms Joyce Makhado, a 71-year-old pensioner from Tshivhilwi Dzhemeni outside Thohoyandou, had a simple desire in life - to have a decent home for her retirement. She struggled for 15 years to build her dream house, which started with just one room. Over time, she systematically added five more rooms until her house was finally complete. However, her dream was shattered last week when her hard work and all the money invested in her home went up in flames, destroying everything she owned. The incident occurred on Tuesday, 6 June, at around 07:00. Nobody was home at the time, so nothing could be saved from the raging fire. The family members are now left without food, clothing, and shelter, completely destitute. While the cause of the fire is unknown, the family suspects an electrical fault. Makhado’s son, Mr Prince Nemasetoni, received a call while he was

working in the village, informing him about the fire. He rushed to the scene, finding neighbours helplessly watching as the flames consumed the house. Because no water was available, they were unable to do anything to stop the fire. The fire appeared to have started in the sitting room, but they cannot be certain of the exact cause.

Nemasetoni expressed his mother’s devastation. She was visiting relatives in Modimolle (Nylstroom) when the incident occurred. “My mother is in a terrible state. She can’t come to terms with the fact that everything she worked for over so many years is now gone. It took her 15 years to complete the house, and wit-

nessing her dream reduced to ashes is something she cannot accept. Rebuilding the house is out of the question. I have also lost all my valuables, including laptops containing my college work. We are shattered as a family and are seeking assistance in any way possible. Currently, we are relying on our councillor, who collected our information and promised to follow up,” he said.

Nemasetoni mentioned that the police had discouraged them from opening a case as the family did not suspect any foul play. When asked to confirm the fire, Vhembe SAPS acting spokesperson Sergeant Vuledzani Dathi was surprised to learn that no case had been opened.

Man stabbed to death after argument at Kutama tavern

A case of murder is being investigated by the police after a 42-yearold man from Zamenkomste village, in the Kutama area, was stabbed to death at a local tavern earlier this month.

Although information regarding the incident is still sketchy, the police report states that the deceased, Morris Semata, got into a serious argument with a group of young men at the tavern on the night of 2 June. The argument allegedly resulted in a fight, during which Semata was stabbed in the chest and under his left arm with a sharp object. He died at the scene.

On Sunday, 4 June, members of the community apparently hunted for the suspect at his home at the nearby Ha- Manavhela village, but they could not find him. The local traditional leader intervened and pleaded with the angry mob not to harm the man if they found him. The 22-year-old suspect, however, was arrested by the police that same day.

Tendani Siepa appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court on 6 June on a charge of murder. His case was postponed to 19 June for a formal bail application.

Semata was buried at the Zamenkomste Cemetery on Saturday, 10 June.

MC Mining and Mudimeli residents clash

Residents of Mudimeli, within the Makhado Municipality, are calling on the management of MC Mining Company to be transparent regarding communicating issues that might affect the surrounding villages due to their operations, such as water challenges or air and noise pollution.

Residents accuse the coal mine of only informing some of the communities when issues arise. “We are asking the mine to address all the communities about water challenges, air pollution or noise pollution and contamination of the vegetation around the mining area. The mine should not call only a few residents to their offices. Whatever the mine has to inform the communities about should be done transparently,” said Omega Mudimeli, one of the complaining members from Mudimeli.

But, according to Ms Marion Brower, a communication strategist for MC Mining, the environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the mining activities in the area had already been done around 2012. “An extensive public participation [process] was conducted before licenses were granted. If some of the residents missed the EIA process, then it’s a pity.”

Brower said the mine offered to engage with the Mudimeli community and was still waiting for a response from them on the approved environmental management plan.

Regarding

pollution and water challenges, Brower said the mine was compelled to take steps to avoid pollution and to protect water sources. She said the mine did not use community boreholes, but sourced its water supply from several production boreholes within the vicinity of the mine.

heeded the call to countless jobless South Africans to create their own employment through entrepreneurship long ago. In 2011, the 34-year-old resident of Lwamondo Khumbe village, outside Thohoyandou, started his own nursery specialising in crafted and non-crafted fruit trees, flowers, vegetable seedlings, and shade trees. Today, business is booming.

“Other farmers started coming to me to discuss their interests and preferences regarding vegetable seedlings. We would engage in discussions about this business. Customers also started coming in numbers and motivated me to work harder to satisfy them. Meanwhile, my business was growing quickly,” he said.

Tshisevhe mentioned that some of his challenges involve the rainy season as his crops often get damaged, leading to conflicts with his customers. “During heavy rains, my seedlings used to get damaged, and customers who had placed their orders started complaining about delays. They threatened to cancel their orders and requested refunds, as they needed to make alternative plans for seedlings. When the rains damaged the seedlings, I had to replant everything. However, we have now improved our business by constructing a new greenhouse tunnel, and things are going very well,” he said.

Dr Maluleke shows that dedication and perseverance ensure success

Government spokespersons told to respect the crictical role they play

On Friday, 9 June, the Collins Chabane Municipality hosted a communication forum at the municipality’s council chambers. Communicators from all local sectors, provincial departments, municipalities and parastatals converged to discuss issues related to local and provincial communications.

One of the many issues that were discussed was to provide a platform for municipal communicators to communicate progress in local government performance better and facilitate inter-municipal peer learning.

The hosting mayor, Cllr

Shadrack Maluleke, encouraged communicators to reclaim their space and be strategic when executing their responsibilities as government communicators. “As a professional communicator, you are in a strategic, powerful, and enviable position to advise your political and administrative principals about critical matters within your respective environments, and this is the role you must completely and seamlessly perform.”

He said it went without saying that communication was an essential function in any organisation. “You need to step up and bridge the apparent communication gap between the government and the public. As important catalysts in the

Ridgeway Preparatory outside Louis Trichardt invited the young learners from the Learning Academy to its campus last week. This initiative was designed so that the many preschools in Louis Trichardt can get the opportunity to experience the unique facility and create further opportunities for collaboration. Learners enjoyed a physical session, as well as the newly upgraded computer room (photo). “It is my goal to create a mini league where our many preschools can compete amongst each other in codes of sport and cultural activities, exposing our community to friendly competition and giving our parents chance to celebrate and cheer on the side-lines,” said Mr Melvin Govender, the principal of Ridgeway Preparatory. course of change, you need to always pick up signals that are important for those who make decisions.”

Maluleke said the communication forum afforded communicators an opportunity to engage with key stakeholders on pertinent government communications ideas, including the extent to which the province, district, and local government communications could be improved. “As leaders who occupy strategic positions, you have a responsibility to disseminate messages that shape and empower society, and you ought not to fail in this regard.”

He urged communicators to reflect on the implementation of the provincial communication strategy.

From once selling clothes and linen door-to-door, the 49-year-old made a personal breakthrough when he was recently conferred a doctorate in administration from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Prior to his latest achievement, he obtained several other qualifications that include a bachelor of science (1996, University of the North), advanced diploma in education (2007, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University), master’s degree in environmental management (2011, University of the Free State), and doctorate in administration (2022, University of KwaZulu Natal).

During his early academic years, though, Maluleke faced the hurdles of inadequate resources, particularly the lack of textbooks. “However, I adapted to the changing times and utilised online resources to enhance my knowledge. As a researcher, I found further growth opportunities

through networking with fellow students and learning valuable insights from their experiences,” he said.

Balancing studies, work demands, and family responsibilities proved to be a challenge for Maluleke. Nevertheless, he made the most of his limited time, ensuring that every available moment was dedicated to his studies. “My unwavering motivation stemmed from the desire to break free from the shackles of poverty and make a meaningful contribution to society,” he said.

His faith in God, along with motivational speeches and sermons, provided him with the necessary inspiration to persevere. “My resilience, focus, and dedication, combined with

educational materials available on platforms like YouTube, proved to be invaluable assets in my academic journey. Family support too played a vital role in my achievements.”

In 2007, Maluleke was employed by the Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform in the Eastern Cape, where he currently holds the position of principal agricultural scientist. His advice to others who are battling with similar challenges in their academic pursuits is: “The drive to succeed should be stronger than the challenges you face. Sometimes, success is about pushing on and resisting the temptation to give up.”

Following the rising number of incidents involving, among others, the misappropriation of funds and nepotism, the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) officially launched the Shared Fraud and Ethics hotline at their council chambers on Wednesday, 7 June.

Representing the HAWKS, Lieutenant Colonel Matimba Maluleke warned public officials against any form of corruption, such as bribery, fraud, and abuse of power. He defined corruption as a conduct or behaviour by public officials who have been entrusted with responsibilities, who violate their duties by obtaining undue gratification of any kind for themselves or for others.

Maluleke advised people to be whistle-blowers and report corruption to the police or the HAWKS. “Corruption eats away at our people’s opportunities,

and we will continue to tackle it head-on, without fear or favour. We will ensure the protection of those reporting corruption in good faith and substantially in accordance with [the] procedure prescribed,” he said.

Also speaking during the launch, the executive mayor of the VDM, Dowelani Nenguda, said that this initiative was long overdue and would go a long way in dealing with illicit and corrupt tendencies within government institutions.

“As government entities, we have the responsibility to ensure that quality services are provided to our communities at all times and that any form of corruption and unethical behaviour is reported, investigated and punished where necessary. So, today we are taking the first step toward realising that goal. This is a shared-service platform. It is not only for [the] Vhembe District Municipality; this hotline can be used to report any suspected acts of

fraud, corruption and unethical practices from all our local municipalities. That is why we see all the municipalities being represented here today through their respective political principals and bureaucrats,” said Nenguda.

Nenguda said that, over the past few years, people had become reluctant to report such cases, mostly for fear of being targeted or victimised, especially within the workplace. “Today, as Vhembe municipalities, we are offering such people an opportunity to play their part in ensuring clean governance … anonymously. Now people can provide information about any incident(s) … without disclosing their identity or source of information, but [with] evidence to back up their claims [to] empower those who will be investigating.”

The official toll-free Anti-Fraud and Ethics hotline number is 0800 115 446.

On Thursday, 8 June, students from the Musina Vhembe Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college embarked on a peaceful march to demand justice for their late fellow student Atendaho Ndou, who was killed in a hit-and-run incident on 20 May this year. Ndou (22) was hit on his way home at a pedestrian crossing along the N1, near the Skoonplaas township in Musina. The motorist sped off without stopping. Ndou was immediately rushed to Musina Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The Musina police say they are still hunting for the suspect. Ndou was studying mechanical engineering at Musina TVET. One of his family members, Ndaedzo Rananga, said he had been a friendly young man who had had his heart set on working for the Toyota car dealership in Musina after completing his course. He was buried in Sanari village, Musina. Photo supplied.

MEC urges church and women to pray for peace and an end to abuse

The MEC for Education, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, has urged members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of South Africa (ELCSA) to pray for peace and an end to crime in the province.

Lerule-Ramakhanya addressed hundreds of women from all branches of the Vhuilafuri Parish Prayer Women’s League who converged at Zamenkomste on 10 June for their annual women’s conference.

The MEC said she found the fact that, so many years into democracy, women were still perceived as sexual objects that men could do with as they wished, even to the extent of raping them, thus eroding their dignity and status as women and mothers of the nation, shocking.

She said she was happy that the church had come up with a conference where women from all walks of life could meet and chart the way forward together. “It is through such gatherings that we as women can sit down and decide on

ways that we could contribute to the fight against crime, and the church has offered us the right platform,” she said.

Lerule-Ramakhanya urged the women and the church as a whole to pray for the leadership in government, that they live up to their mandate for their constituencies. She strongly encouraged women to blow the whistle on any form of women and child abuse. “Let us women stand up and do something about the crimes perpetuated against women. Criminals are our children, and it is still us who [can] expose them, so that they face the might of the law. If we [do] that, we would see a decline in crime in our locality.”

She said that women were playing meaningful roles in making a difference in their respective communities.

The chairperson of the Vhuilafuri Parish Prayer Women’s League of the Lutheran Church, Ms Marubini Ramuedzisi, encouraged the women to work hard in order for them to achieve their dreams and to speak out about abuse. “In biblical times, women were faceless and voiceless. They couldn’t do anything on their own because they had no freedom to do so. They had to ask a man for everything that needed to be done. I am not saying that women should antagonise their husbands; far be that spirit from us, but a woman should not wait for a man to come into her life before she could do good things to enrich her own life,” she said.

Fish farmer Mulelu gives hope to unemployed youth

A young up-and-coming farmer from Phiphidi Shonisani, outside Thohoyandou, says the youth of South Africa will have nothing to celebrate if they do not stand up and create jobs for themselves.

Nngodiseni Mulelu (22), who farms fish and vegetables on a piece of land on his father’s six-hectare farm, spoke to Limpopo Mirror right before the start of the annual Youth Month celebrations on 16 June.

“Unemployment and poverty have become a way of life to a lot of young people in this country. Many are educated but are still jobless years after obtaining their qualifications. This is unacceptable. It cannot go on like this; something needs to be done. Young people have their future in their own hands, and this can only be realised if they start their own businesses and employ others,” he said.

Mulelu said he grew up with agriculture in his blood. As a boy, he used to follow his father to his small farm, where he would try to copy his father in whatever he would be doing. He started his own farming career by planting vegetables which, today, he sells to the local communities. “In 2020, when I was in the 11th grade, I took an interest in fish farming after realising that there was an increasing demand for fish in the

Hundreds mourn Negoma’s death

Obituary

Hundreds of mourners braved the chilly weather on Saturday to pay their last respects to the late Ndivhudzannyi Simson Negoma, a highly respected retired senior manager at the Department of Home Affairs. Negoma, who worked at the department for 41 years before retiring in April 2018, passed away at his home in Dzimauli Tshibvumo on Saturday, 3 June, at the age of 70. He was laid to rest at Dzimauli.

Mr Zamba Maluleke, a current senior manager at the Department of Home Affairs, told the mourners that Negoma’s loyalty and hard work were the main reasons why his colleagues still remembered him years after his retirement. “It is very rare that one sees an employer paying tribute at someone’s funeral who had retired years ago. However, we felt it would be unjust for us not to be part of this send-off because the deceased had been such a useful assert to us during his time at the department. Even in his retirement, we used to call him for advice, and he would assist us because he was a knowledgeable person whose experience could not be underrated.”

The deceased’s daughter, Ms Dakalo Negoma, who is a senior manager at the South African Revenue Services (SARS), said believing that her loving father was gone was hard. “Daddy was a responsible person who strived to provide us with a better future. We cannot imagine how life would be without him because he was our pillar of strength. His departure caught us by surprise because he had just returned from hospital, and he looked strong and recovering. Despite the pain that we feel, we thank God for giving us a wonderful father who loved us until his last day on earth,” she said. Negoma is survived by his two wives, Florah and Takalani, children and grandchildren.

Vhembe region. In 2022, after I had completed my matric, I took a gap year from my studies and started farming fish full time. I have since had my first harvest of Tilapia and silver carp, which I also sell to the local market. In the meantime, I share my knowledge about fish farming with other youths in my area. Some have already started and are trying their own businesses.”

Mulelu is planning to expand his business and supply fish to big supermarkets. “To the youths of this country I say, do not despair; do not give up in life. In these hard economic times, we should get up and improve our own lives. Do not wait for handouts. Start a business, no matter how small it may be in the beginning. It will make sense one day,” he said.

Mzansi youth. The future is you.

As I reflect on my journey, I sometimes ask myself, did my journey have to start like this? Did our history need to be this way? What made you rise and find the courage to stand up?

As I reflect and think of your sacrifices and lives lost. I find myself just wanting to say:

“Thank you!” youth of 1976. Thank you for looking forward. For the vision you had and the path you paved for us. You lead the change for us, the youth of 2023.

You believed in our potential. You knew what we could bring to the table of this nation, and now the world. You knew that brilliance lives in us. And that inventors and innovators would stem from us.

Now we are leaders pioneering our own future. Shaping the next generation’s future just like you did for ours.

With the support of Zimele, Anglo American’s enterprise, supplier and youth development programme, I can start shaping that future today.

New booklet on Tshivenda spelling and orthography rules

Mr Edward Nemutamvuni, member of the Tshivenda National Language Body (TNLB) responsible for convening the language standardisation technical committee, has announced that a new booklet on Tshivenda spelling and orthography rules has been published.

The TNLB is a structure for the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB). According to Nemutamvuni, language is not a static phenomenon and changes from time to time. “There are many factors that influence language and how it changes. Language is not limited to time, place, technology, generations or education, and the Tshivenḓa language is not immune to these changes either. The Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB), through its National Language Bodies (NLB) - in this case the Tshivenḓa National Language Body - has the responsibility to review the Tshivenda language and spelling each and every five years,” he said.

Therefore, Nemutamvuni said, the TNLB had reviewed the old Tshivenda spelling system and made new changes to be used by everyone who used Tshivenḓa for speaking and writing. “The advantage

of reviewing spelling and orthography is to ensure that languages accommodate new developments. The TNLB is encouraging Vhavenḓa communities who speak and write Tshivenḓa as their mother language, and others who speak and write Tshivenḓa as their second or additional language, to make use of these new spelling and orthography rules.”

He said that, because it

LP Midalo’s new EP advocates love, independence and longevity

LP Midalo released his third EP, Ndalamo, last month. The album is a testament to the transformative power of spreading love, embracing independence, and cherishing longevity and was released on the day he celebrated his 26th birthday, on 28 May, which, to him, makes it even more special.

Born Lidzebe Midalo from Maniini, the artist drew inspiration for his latest project (of which the title means “longevity”) from witnessing the death of so many young people. “In a society where our youth often depart prematurely and our icons leave us in tragic circumstances, I have turned to my deity, God, to seek protection and guidance,” he said.

Having embarked on his

music journey as a songwriter in 2008, LP Midalo has since recorded several singles, three mixtapes, and three EPs. Two years ago, he introduced his own distinctive and personalised genre, called Venda Beats, which is a combination of Afro beats, traditional Venda melodies, and New Age sounds.

“Since its release, the EP has garnered immense praise from fans who have deeply connected with its profound message, which resonated with them on a deep level. One of the standout tracks is called Mphe Mphe, which translates into ‘give me’. This empowering song serves as a poignant reminder that relying solely on external entities, such as the government or other people, is not the path to salvation,” he said.

Last year, LP Midalo won Best Music Video award for with his song, Bona Fide, at the 2022 Limpopo Music Awards (LIMA). The song is from his first official EP, titled 0950 LP Midalo’s soulful music not only seeks to console but also encourages his fans to navigate the daunting realities of the world with unwavering strength and resilience, while placing their trust in God.

Looking back now, I regard it as a blessing. I didn’t let that setback discourage me. Instead, I worked hard to build a name for myself, grow personally, and gain the confidence that is needed to pursue my dreams,” she said.

The Miss Essence SA beauty pageant was established by popular musician Henny C, in partnership with Meropa Sun, with the aim of celebrating the power in every woman.

Zwivhuya says that what sets her (and anyone else for that matter) apart is embracing her individuality. While she does not have formal education in fashion design yet, she plans to study it in future as it aligns perfectly with her business ventures.

Beyond her aspirations in the pageant, Zwivhuya has also taken initiative in her community. She started a project called "Self-Discovery" even before she entered for the Miss Essence SA pageant. She gathers a group of young kids to mentor them and helps them define their purpose within the community. “I also teach them the word of God and provide entertainment through singing. This initiative serves as a positive influence to keep these young individuals off the streets and help them find direction at an early age,” she said.

Merlyn Rathogwa releases another uplifting album

Fans of gospel artist Merlyn

Rathogwa is very excited over her latest album, titled Riya Livhuwa (Let’s give thanks to God), which was released in April this year. The album contains six worshipping songs, which she hopes will inspire her listeners to give God His due praise.

Rathogwa was born and raised in Gondeni Ha-Mabilu, just outside Thohoyandou. She is a staunch member of the Divine Empowerment Centre in Phiphidi village, where she teaches other young and aspiring gospel singers.

“I started singing in the school choir while I attended Phiriphiri Secondary School, in the Nzhelele area, back in 1987, and I never looked back. I grew up listening to wellknown gospel artist Rebecca Malope and felt inspired by her songs. I was always imitating her while singing in the church choir,” she said. Her first album, U khou Vhuya (Jesus is coming) was recorded in 2004, followed by Murendeni (Keep praising

God) in 2013.

Rathogwa says Riya Livhuwa, which is her third album, is a testimony of God’s love. It follows a difficult period in her life, but through prayer, she says, He has made her life better again.

“One of the songs on the album, No netaho, encourages those who are tired to come to Jesus Christ and give their problems to Him, as He will listen to their grievances and solve all their problem. In the last song on the album, Mudzimu asa baleliwi, I sing about how God cannot be defeated. I want to tell my listeners that, with God, one can only fight

winning battles.”

Riya Livhuwa was recorded at the Worship House Church in Shayandima. For booking and live performances, call Rathogwa on 082 761 5367.

TeeagoSA releases his second EP

Young Hakhakhi Mugeri, known by his stage name of TeeagoSA, released his second Extended Play (EP), titled Straight out of Venda II, on 27 May. The EP contains six tracks, namely Maria Wanga, Ha-Murena, Paradisoni, Jealous, Melody from a broken heart, and Vhuswa hashu TeeagoSA’s first EP, Straight out of Venda I, was released in March 2022.

The 23-year-old artist, who hails from Matsika village, near Thohoyandou, grew up in a musical family, with his father, Rev Mugeri, being a Gospel singer, and his late brother, Fhulufhelo Mugeri, becoming a hip-hop artist. “Growing up in a family that makes music is what made me fall in love with music at a very early age. My brother used to take me along to his recording sessions and that’s where I learned to write songs. My brother paid for my

first recording session for my very first song,” he said.

Despite facing certain challenges, like not having enough equipment for recording and having to travel all the way to Muledane village to get his music recorded at the Muledane Hustler studio, he is working on his next project, which will be a full album this time. “I am working on my first album; I am not sure yet if I will release it at the end of this year or by early next year. The good

news is that I am working with many local artists on the album,” he said.

said.

His second album, Matshilo ashu, was released in 2021, and did just as well as the first. “I have learnt that if you pray hard, God will bless you with everything you need.”

The artist has been silent since the second album was released while trying to assess the RnB scene, as well as other genres related to RnB, to see how best he could take it to another level. “But I seem to have cracked the code,” he said slyly.

His love of rap music during his primary years earned 23-year-old Patson Thalutshedzo Maphosa, now fondly known as Wizzy Kays, his status in the community he lives in.

Maphosa was born and bred in Musina. He discovered his talent when he was in the seventh grade at St Martin Primary School in Musina. At the age of 15, Maphosa emulated many Venda artists’ songs. “I feel like this thing is in my blood. All I remember is that, when I was still young, I used to sing and perform other well-known artists such as Una Rina’s songs, till I realised one day that I could write my own song,” he said.

He loves freestyle music. In 2017, he rubbed shoulders with a like-minded friend, and they recorded their first song, called Dam Dam. “We discovered that the community loved the song. This encouraged me to really put more effort into rapping,” he said.

In 2020, Maphosa recorded his first eighttrack album, Music On, which secured him an interview with local radio station Musina FM. The year 2020 was spectacular for him as he released his hit song, Success Motion “After the interview, I noticed that many people now followed me on my Facebook page, while others preferred to chat with me on WhatsApp,” said Maphosa.

Last year, he featured in the Mascots and Kids Summer Festival, hosted at Musina Faranani Lodge.

Everything is not just glorious for the singer, however. Funding to get their music recorded is a great concern for some artists, and he is not exempt from this problem. He encourages local communities to invite him to events.

Mrs Rendani Mulaudzi is Phalaphala FM’s new branding specialist. Mulaudzi joined Phalaphala FM in 2013 as a freelance administrator in the news department and was later employed permanently in this position. Today, she is still part of the team.

She was born and raised in the Shayandima location, where she attended Tshisaulu Primary School and matriculated from SASSA Combined School. After school, she enrolled at the University of Venda and obtained her degree in media studies. She also completed an NQ6-diploma in marketing management and a certificate in advanced marketing management.

Having been exposed to the media environment for some time now, Mulaudzi always conducts her work in a highly professional manner, being a results-driven individual. She has excellent planning and organisational skills, is a good communicator with terrific interpersonal skills and works well under pressure. She shows lots of initiative and can work independently.

About her new position as the station’s branding specialist, she said, “I enjoy my work a lot. I just love what I am doing, and I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. Radio and television have changed a lot over the years, but we need to realise that media content has to be aligned with what is actually happening out there,” she said.

Mulaudzi knew how important completing her studies was before she could negotiate the intricate system at the radio station. Her advice to the youth, therefore, is to fi nish school before they think about branching out to other areas of adulthood. “Life comes with a lot of responsibilities, and you will need to make sound choices. I think the wisest thing is to start by getting some form of education that will serve as a solid platform for your future,” she said.

CSG Galaha has released his third album, Muhuweleli. Photo supplied.

Before the final release of the album, I spent days praying for the Lord to lead me on this new musical journey as I was not sure how it would go. In the end, Ndoshuma was received by music lovers with much acclaim. That is how I gained the courage to return to the studio for my second, and now third album,” he

His musical journey, which started a long time ago with the promotion of his brand name, will now continue as he will be touring the district, the province and Gauteng, starting on 21 June. “We want to test the new songs to see if they are what the people out there want. You don’t just assume that everyone likes your music and churn out an album. What if it turns out to be a total flop? I see music as a business. I didn’t enter this industry for art’s sake – I need for my artistic efforts to be rewarded with financial gain,” he said.

Eighth album for Shudu Gal Gusheshe

House musician Mashudu Badzhi, better known as Shudu Gal Gusheshe, released her eighth album, Vienna, about a month ago. Her latest offering already seems to be doing very well on the market. The 10-track album contains songs such as Award, Love, Mama, Baby Mama, and Service. Badzhi hails from the dusty village of Elim. She is very excited about her latest release. “I actually wanted to take a rest, but pressure from

my fans forced me to get back into the studio to record this album. This is my best album ever, and that it is the reason why I dedicated it to the Lord, to give thanks for all He has done for me. The road thus far has not always been smooth, but the Lord has helped me soldier on and on.”

She says she has been fortunate as she is able to make a living from her music, being booked most of the time to perform at small venues around the country.

“Big promoters overlook us for the big gigs, but some of

us are lucky enough to make a living from the shows we get all over the country. And with the support we get, we will not tire of giving our fans good music.”

However, she says that producing an album every year is nearly impossible as composing and recording quality music take a lot of time. When Badzhi is not working on her own music, she invests her time by helping aspiring young musicians mould their careers.

She thanks her fans for their loyal support, as well

as her manager, family and friends, without whom, she says, she could never have done what she has done so far.

To the young and hopeless out there she shares a message: “Just remember that with God in our lives, we don’t need to use artificial sources like drugs or alcohol to feel happy. Stay goal-driven and productive, and put your education first, so you have something to build a good future on,” she says.

Nemutavhanani is eager to try and change the lives of young people

Community Leader

Gudani Hazel Nemutavhanani (29) wants to see young people in Limpopo, particularly in Vhembe, empower themselves, so that they can be self-reliant instead of waiting for handouts. She believes that her dream will become a reality one day through her initiative, the Far North Youth Empowerment project.

The idea of establishing an NGO that deals with issues affecting young people was conceived in June 2022 after Nemutavhanani realized how many young people lacked certain skills to survive. “With June being Youth Month, we all need to redouble our efforts to ensure that young people are prepared for a future of self-reliance, especially in these tough economic times. If young people receive the necessary support, it would be easier for them to fully contribute to the economic development of our country.”

Nemutavhanani, originally from

Dzimauli but now based in Musina, says Far North Youth Empowerment organises empowerment sessions such as skills development workshops and information sessions for the youth in various areas around Vhembe.

The organisation also focuses on issues such as eradicating drug abuse and teenage pregnancies among young people.

“If we have young people who can create their own jobs, we will be able to tackle poverty head-on, thereby

Women of His Power extends a helping hand to the vulnerable

On Saturday, 27 May, Women of His Power (wHp), a non-governmental organisation based in Limpopo, extended a helping hand to needy orphans and homeless people in Louis Trichardt.

This coincided with the

launch of the annual Child Protection Week by the Minister of Social Development (DSD), Ms Lindiwe Zulu, in the Western Cape.

Even though wHp was started in 2017, the NGO has not established proper offices yet. Most of its members are from the Vhembe District and

improving the standard of life. The issues of drug abuse and teenage pregnancies are a thorn in the flesh, and all of us need to come together for this common cause.”

However, she mentions that, because of a lack of funds and resources, building a strong team to realise her dreams is very difficult. “Sometimes I get a few colleagues to work with me, but most of them don’t stay because I can’t offer them compensation for their efforts. That is why I find myself doing everything on my own most of the time. Another challenge is that I don’t have an office space to operate from, but because I have a burning desire to change the lives of young people, I never give up, and I continue running the project from my own handbag,” she said. She asks that young people and organisations who want to partner with her contact her on 076 155 2355 (voice calls and WhatsApp). She is also available on Facebook (Lezah Lee).

they mostly communicate via social-media platforms. They try and identify specific needs in the community, which then get addressed.

This year, the DSD is focussing on raising awareness in communities based on the prevention and early intervention programme, RISIHA. As the name suggests in Xitsonga, which means “resilience”, their aim is to move orphaned and vulnerable children from vulnerability to resilience.

On Saturday, wHp donated food hampers, old clothes and school shoes to orphans in the Kutama-Sinthumule area. Most of the orphans live with siblings who struggle to put food on the table. According to Khumbudzo Phuluwa, the secretary of the organisation, some of these orphans often go without food for days. “We also care for the homeless and try to assist in the best way we can,” she said.

Former Makonde school teacher a

Obituary

Well-known electrical engineer Gudani Ravhuanzwo described his late mother, Azwihangwisi Gladys Dzebu, as a loving woman who would not even hurt a fly. Ravhuanzwo was addressing mourners, who came from as far as Gauteng, Durban and Zimbabwe to attend his mother’s funeral at her home village of Makonde, north of Thohoyandou, last Saturday. Dzebu (60), a former schoolteacher, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, 6 June.

Ms Dzebu was born at Khubvi village on 21 January 1963. After completing her high school education at Mukula High School, she worked as an unqualified teacher at Pile Primary and Raluvhimba High. She later completed her primary teacher’s diploma at the then Tshisimani College of Education and taught at Makonde, Roadhuis, Magwagwaza, Thomani and Jim Masindi primary schools. Following ill health, she resigned from teaching in 2005. At that

time, she held the position of head of department.

A highly religious person, Dzebu also completed her diploma in theology. At the time of her passing, she was an active member of Agape City Ministries.

Ravhuanzwo said that, although his mother had not been well over the past years, she had never missed church on Sunday. “She taught us to love God and we grew under her guidance to be who we are today. We are very fortunate to have been raised under her wings. She sacrificed everything to take care of us. We will miss her beautiful smile, kindness and parental love,” he said.

Representing the local villagers, Mr John Nethenzheni remembered Dzebu as “an angel” who helped the local communities with many things. “During this time when we have a serious challenge of water supply, she would make her borehole available for everyone, free of charge,” he said. Drug abuse among the youth has become a societal challenge, and the need to keep young people off the streets has grown stronger than ever. In Musina, three residents have dedicated their own time to keeping youngsters occupied in a positive way. Every weekday after school, from 15:00 to 17:00, Mr Sello John Maladzhi (46), Ms Thandy Shoba (33) and Alfred Mafungo (22) offer training in activities such as gumboot dancing, poetry, drama, visual arts and singing at the Multipurpose Centre in Musina. Maladzhi said that, besides getting the youth off the streets,

they believed that the centre was a place where individuals could showcase their talents. This initiative was started by Maladzhi in 2009, but he said they had been faced with many challenges that prevented them from making the changes they were aiming for. For them to generate funds to keep the project going, they host events on certain public holidays during the year, such as the Back-toSchool campaign at the start of the school year, National Youth Day (16 June), Heritage Day (24 September) and Arts and Culture Day in December.

“Sometimes it is not possible to host these events because of a lack of resources, which makes it very difficult for us.

We still have a long way to go, but we are dependent on sponsorships. For us to really do better, we need someone who can sponsor a vehicle, so that we can transport the participants to and from the venue. We also need additional financial support to keep this initiative running from day to day,” he said.

Their efforts, however, do not go unnoticed. Many Musina residents have voiced their appreciation of this initiative on the Musina-To-The-Front WhatsApp group. “What Maladzhi is doing is really good. No one [else] can give his or her time to entertain youths and keeping them away from [the] streets,” said one resident.

Eight teams in Mudifho Empire Cup

Sport Development

Soccer lovers in the Nzhelele district can look forward to some exciting action when the Mudifho Empire Soccer Tournament kicks off on Friday (16th).

The tournament, pipped to showcase the region’s best young talent, takes place at the Luvhalani Grounds on Friday and Saturday. All matches will

No peace pipe for Vondwe XI Bullets

Tshivhazwaulu Peace Makers had no intention of smoking any peace pipe with Vondwe XI Bullets when they humiliated them with a 0-2 defeat in their Nwali Soccer Tournament match that was played at the Khubvi Benjie’s Grounds on Saturday.

Although they are campaigning in the lower division, Peace Makers did not show any sign of respect towards their elder brothers.

Within 10 minutes, Bullets realised that they had met their match. At that stage, the defenders of Peace Makers were

enjoying the game by playing short passes within their own danger zone. The strikers of Bullets, Lucky Mutshotsho and Phathutshedzo Nemagovhani, did not live up to the fans’ expectations as they were tightly marked.

Peace Makers claimed the lead in the 17th minute. Their lethal striker, Khathutshelo Majuta, was on target with a header, following a scramble within the box. Rinae Madzhuta of Peace Makers was the first player to see yellow. He found himself on the wrong side of the football laws for a lengthy argument with the referee.

Realising that they found breaking the Peace Makers’ wall difficult, the strikers of Bullets opted to try their luck from a distance. This worked against them as all their attempts went astray, much to the disappointment of the team’s supporters.

Peace Makers increased the lead in the 74th minute when Ndivho Mukwevho blasted in a rocket after a corner kick taken by Rinaye Madzhuta.

Bullets realised that Saturday was not their day after they were awarded a penalty in the 76th minute. Phathutshedzo Nemagovhani caused an upset by shooting straight to the keeper.

Berea FC unceremoniously knock

Stone Breakers out of Nwali Cup

Nweli Stone Breakers will not take part in the semi-final stage of the Nwali Soccer Tournament. They were booted out of the tournament by Berea FC, who crushed them 3-0 at the Khubvi Benjie’s Grounds on Saturday. Dakalo “DK” Ratshitanga, the team’s captain, led by example by scoring a brace in the game.

Stone Breakers were unstoppable in the first 20 minutes of the game, but they ran out of stamina towards the end of the first half. Realising that Stone Breakers were all over them, Berea opted to move one of their midfielders back to

solidify their second line of defence. They only started to play their normal, attacking football when Stone Breakers started to lose shape in the middle of the park.

Berea’s Khethani Ndou, who came on as a substitute for Michael Ramagalela, made his presence felt in the 40th minute. He headed home from a corner kick that was taken by Ronny Mavungo. The score was 1-0 at the end of the first half.

Stone Breakers effected two changes to their starting 11 early in the last stanza. They replaced Gundo Mange and Zwannda Munyai with Mukoma Munyai and Zwavhudi Nkhumeleni respectively.

Rotshidzwa Ntshavheni of Berea was reprimanded with a card for dangerous play. He tackled Thuso Ramukumba from behind.

The wheel of fortune turned in favour of Berea again in the 74th minute. The keeper of Stone Breakers, Vhutali Nengwenani, mishandled the ball and Dakalo Ratshitanga, who was watching closely, saw this as a precious gift. He easily tapped the ball into the net. Ratshitanga completed his brace towards the end of the game after beating the offside trap and sending the keeper the wrong way with a half volley, bringing the full-time score to 3-0.

The action starts at 09:15, when Monaco Ratas come up against Luvhalani Sunshine. At 11:15, Matsa All Stars will test their strength against Mabirimisa Powerline. In the third match of the day, starting at 13:15, Tshikuwi

Stone Breakers will play against Zebra Force, and at 15:15, Tshikuwi GD6 will wrap up the day’s activities with a match against Tshikuwi Black Stone.

On Saturday (17th) the action starts at 10:00 when the first semi-final kicks off. The second semi-final starts at 12:00 and later that day, at 15:30, all eyes will be on the final.

Victory for Mukula Young Santos

Mukula Young Santos proved beyond doubt that they can slay the giants when they crushed their elder brothers, United Artists, 3-1 in their Nwali Soccer Tournament match that was played at the Khubvi Benjie’s Grounds on Sunday.

Young Santos did not waste any time after the start of the game. Their opening goal was scored three minutes into the game. A back pass in the 20-metre area gave rise to the goal. Fhulufhedzani Ramudzuli, who scored a brace in the game, intercepted the pass and

beat one defender before unleashing a powerful strike from inside the box. The keeper of United Artists, Freddy Matiya, watched helplessly as the ball went beyond his reach.

Santos realised that they had nothing to fear after scoring the opening goal. They initiated several promising moves from the middle of the park, forcing the midfielders of Artists to chase the action for most of the game.

A clearing error by Artists’ left back in the 24th minute resulted in Santos’ second goal. Khuliso Mudau capitalised on the error and put his side two goals up.

The game turned lukewarm for a while as the players seemed to have run out of steam. Santos’ third goal came via Fhulufhedzani Ramudzuli. He completed his brace with a ground cutter, following a neat pass from Thanyani Bohwana. The score was 3-0 when the teams adjourned for the halftime break.

Realising that victory was almost certain, Santos spent the second half enjoying the game, demonstrating their dribbling skills.

The only goal for United Artists was scored by Mulaudzi Ramaremisa, who came on as a substitute later in the game.

Tshimuthe FC scores a narrow 1-0 victory to boot Rockers out of Nwali

A goal in the dying minutes of the game was good enough for Tshimuthe FC, who beat Rockers FC 1-0 to secure a place in the semi-final round of the Nwali Soccer Tournament at the Khubvi Benjie’s Grounds on Sunday.

The game was a see-saw battle from the start. Both sides managed to produce some fireworks in the middle of the park, but their strikers were unlucky at the goal finish.

Rockers were the first to knock on their opponents’ door. Their Rastafarian striker, Rotondwa Rammela, could not believe his eyes in the 14th minute when his ground cutter missed the target by inches.

The struggle continued, with both sides creating and wasting scoring opportunities. The referee, Mr Mulalo Mubva, produced the first yellow card in the 24th minute. Protector Mulaudzi of Rockers was lucky not to see red after tackling Vhulenda Mulibana from behind.

The goal that secured Tshimuthe a place in the semi-final of the tournament came seven minutes towards the end of regulation time. Ofhani Vele gave the ball the final touch after a

scramble within the box. Rockers did not throw in the towel, although time was fast running out for them. They launched several attacks, but it was already too late for them.

eight netball teams.

The first matches start on Friday (16th) and the winning teams will move on to the next round of matches, which are scheduled to take place at the same venue on 17 June.

The semi-final and the final matches are to be played on

Sunday, 18 June.

“The champions of the Musona Soccer tournament will go home with a R15 000 cash prize, a new soccer kit and a floating trophy. The runners-up will get R7 000, a soccer kit and silver medals,” said the general secretary of the Musona Soccer Tournament, Mr Zwanga “Musona” Mashau. Prizes will also be given to the teams ending in the third and fourth position.

The champions in the netball knock-out will go home with R1 500, a new netball kit, gold medals and a floating trophy. The runners-up will receive netball kit and silver medals.

Mashau thanked the sponsors of the tournament for helping to identify talent in the region. “Despite the difficult economic conditions, we still find companies that are prepared to share their takings and support sport,” he added.

Teams that indicated that they would participate are: Tshikhwani Stone Breakers, Ablex United, Ramantsha Blackpool, Zebezebe FC, Deportivo FC, JT Mambas, Hamula FC, Legendary FC, Greenway Sport Academy, Madombidzha Brothers FC, Papa FC, Napoli, Congo XI, DM Master II and Tornado.

In the first match, starting at 10:00, Mubva All Stars will come up against their younger brothers, Daniel Mubva FC. The next match, starting at

Lots of action expected at Coach Dolezar U/16 soccer tournament

Sparks are expected to fly when four soccer teams meet at the Coach Dolezar U/16 Soccer Tournament that is to be played at the Madodonga Sports Grounds in Vondwe village on Saturday, 17 June. The four participating teams are Vondwe Young Brothers, Mukula Development Young Juniors, Tshififi Mighty FC and Vondwe Juventus FC.

According to one of the tournament’s organisers, Mr Thulami “Dolezar” Malusele, they have invited the best local U/16 teams to participate. Members of the community who are doing extremely well in football and education in the area will also receive awards at the tournament.

The South African Football Association in the Vhembe District, the Department of Education, members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Vhembe District’s Disability Forum were also invited to the tournament. “We will further honour late football stars who participated greatly in the development of the game during their time, and educators who are doing a great job by offering extra classes at local schools,” Malusele said.

The educators that will be honoured at the tournament are Mr Vusani Neguyuni, Ms Mpedziseni Mphephu, Ms Mme Malima, and Mr Chester Tshivhandekano.

Malusele said their main aim as development coaches was to give young players a platform to showcase their skills in front of local and national soccer scouts. “Since I started this annual tournament, more than 20 players have been signed by teams that are playing in top leagues. I also want to prove that even people living

with albinism, like me, can contribute to the development of the country. Don’t undermine us because we are disabled,” he said.

Thulani “Dolezar” Malusele, one of the organisers of the Coach Dolezar U/16 Soccer Tournament, which will take place at the Madodonga Sports Grounds in Vondwe village this coming Saturday.

12:00, will be between Ravele Black Dragons and Ravele Highlanders. The winners will proceed to the final match, scheduled to start at 15:00.

The champions will receive R4 000, a floating trophy, gold medals and a soccer kit. The runners-up will receive R1 000, silver medals and a soccer kit

The teams that ends up in third and fourth positions will get R600, R400 and soccer kits.

According to the organis-

er, Mr Ivan Mahangwahaya, the cash prizes are likely to increase, depending on the amount they will receive from the other sponsors.

He said that the organisers were very proud to host the annual event. “The importance of sport in the lives of young people goes much further than the basic answer that it keeps kids off the streets. It does in fact keep young people off the streets, but it also instils lessons that are essential in the life of a human being,” he said.

He added that, through sports, people could learn values such as discipline, responsibility, self-confidence, sacrifice, and accountability. “It is up to the community, parents, teachers, sports teams, traditional leaders and schools to help mould, develop and instil these qualities into the lives of young people.”

Battle of the Stars awaits in Sasol Women’s League

After a break of 10 days, business will continue as usual for the teams affiliated to the Limpopo Stream of the Sasol Women’s League this weekend. The match not to be missed will be between Lacoste Morning Stars and Tshandama Young Stars, which will be played at the Shayandima Secondary School Grounds on Sunday afternoon.

Morning Stars and Young Stars are among the teams closely contesting for the league championship. Young Stars are in the fourth position with 16 points, while Morning Stars are lying in the fifth spot with 15 points.

Masakona Liberty Experience will host Sealene Ladies at the Masakona Grounds in one of the matches scheduled for Saturday. Liberty Experience are still battling to find a winning combination so far. They are lying in the second-last

position on the log standings with one point.

The newly promoted Phomolong Ladies will entertain Real Mighty Girls at the Lulekani Stadium in Phalaborwa. Phomolong Ladies managed to win only one of the nine matches they have played to date.

Rodadau FC will undertake a journey to the Merwe Grounds outside Malamulele. Should they fail to collect the maximum points at stake, Rodadau will have only themselves to blame. Merwe United are still to deposit a point into their league account. They have conceded 40 goals and managed to score only four in eight games. Two for Joy Ladies will have a date with Sisters FC at the Tshirenzheni Grounds.

The other fixtures are University of Limpopo Ladies vs Mandebele Happy Fighters, Seven Stars Ladies vs Kanatla Ladies, FC 50 Stars United vs Ramatlaohle Ladies and Schoonoord Chiefs Ladies vs Marumo Gallants.

Home Defenders trip over semi-final hurdle

Mpheni

Defenders choked again. Just as in previous years, the Limpopo-based side could not clear the final hurdle in their quest to be promoted to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Home Defenders started last week’s play-offs as if they were going to dominate all proceedings. Their first test was last Wednesday when they came up against Mpumalanga Royal Cubs in the Harry Gwala stadium. Home Defenders had no trouble brushing them off 4-2.

On Thursday, the team came up against the North-West champions, Orbit College. Before the match started, Home Defenders knew that a draw would be enough to secure them a passage to the semi-finals. Orbit College also knew that, by virtue of their low goal difference, they would become the fourth team in the semi-finals if they played to a draw.

In what was described as an extremely boring and frustrating match,

both sides knocked the ball around between their defenders. Some soccer pundits were convinced that the outcome was pre-arranged. No-one was surprised when it ended in a 1-1 draw. Mpheni’s coach, Sydwell Phuravhathu, blamed the team’s lacklustre performance on nervousness.

Many will say the soccer gods always have the last laugh, and on Friday, Home Defenders were punished. They came up against the Northern Cape champions, Upington City. Their three midfielders, Freedom Nyundu, Maanda Makhado and Bonginkosi Makhanya, were tightly marked and could not influence the play. Defenders then had to volley from behind in a bid to frustrate their opponents.

Gift Nemutandani of Defenders could have broken the shackles shortly before the end of the first half, but this was not to be. He forced his way through the defence of Upington but lost possession on the brink of unleashing from inside the box.

Upington were the first to enter a number on the scoreboard. Their lethal striker, Jason Arries, headed home

in the 39th minute after a scramble in the box.

Defenders took 87 minutes to retaliate. Their overlapping midfielder, Freedom Nyundu, was in the perfect position when he received the ball to score the equaliser.

Defenders were all over Upington in the dying minutes of the game, but City’s defence did not give an inch. With the scores level after 90 minutes of play, a result had to be obtained with a penalty shoot-out. Upington City found the net on three occasions, compared to Home Defenders’ two.

After the game, Home Defenders lodged an appeal, claiming that the keeper of Upington, Rhuwane Wynne, was not properly registered. At the time of our going to press, the outcome of the appeal was unknown.

In the other semi-final, the team that Mpheni let off the hook, Orbit College, beat the KZN side, Umsinga United, 2-1. Orbit College played against Upington City in the final, but were beaten 3-1. Both teams have secured promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship next season.

The event is organised by Mamu Sports Development. Mamu’s general secretary, Jafter Mamugudubi, said that the tournament also served as a talent-scouting event. Tournaments such as this one are used by national scouts to identify talented young players.

Mabaleng’s road to the final went via Maita Zwitoma U/15, whom they beat 4-3 in the semi-final. The match ended in a 1-1 draw and went into penalty shootouts. They then came up against Mubva All Stars U/15. Mubva first had to beat Zoutpansberg Powerline U/15. This match also ended in a draw, but Mubva were triumphant in the penalty shoot-out, winning 3-1.

VFA confirm appointment of Joel Masutha as coach

The chairman of Venda Football Academy (VFA), Mr Itani Munzhelele, has officially announced the appointment of Mr Joel Masutha as the head coach of the team. This decision has come after weeks of speculation and is based on Masutha’s impressive track record with the team.

Eighteen top teams are getting ready for Safa Vhembe play-offs

The much-awaited Safa Vhembe SAB League promotional play-off matches will be played on 16 June at different venues. The winners of Friday’s clashes will proceed to the final play-off matches on Sunday (18th).

The 18 teams that have made the play-offs have been divided into three groups, with matches scheduled to be played at Tshifudi Stadium, Malamulele Stadium and Tshifulanani Stadium.

On Friday, three matches will be played at the Tshifudi Stadium. That is where Annel Real Vikings will meet Mabvete Peace Makers in the opening match. Berea FC will do battle against Dipeni FC in the second match. The match starting at 15:00 will be between Madridtas and Mukula Young Santos.

Young Santos must be regarded as the underdogs because Madridtas’ performance has been superb throughout the season. But if the Tshifudi side underestimates Young Santos, that will be a suicidal mistake. Santos are in top form after beating the ABC Motsepe side, United Artists, 3-1 in their quarter-final game

of the Nwali Soccer Tournament at the Khubvi Benjie’s Grounds last Sunday.

At Tshifulanani Stadium the first match will be between Makhitha Oscar Stars and Tshikhwani Stone Breakers. This will be followed by the clash between Koki FC and Masakona Young Tigers, which is scheduled to start at 13:00. At 15:00 Mauluma Eagles United and Matanda Rockers FC will meet.

When asked about their level of readiness for the matches, the spokesperson for Makhitha Oscar Stars, Mr Sydney Luvhengo, said that they were ready for whatever heat they might come across in the matches. Luvhengo further said that all his players were razor sharp.

Vhamusanda Vho-Mbulaheni Ramabulana of Tshikhwani Stone Breakers said that his players were ready for any team. According to him, his team will be the champions. He said that they had used the two-week break to tighten up loose ends.

Young Tigers finished their league programme on top of Stream F2 with 47 points, one ahead of their neighbours, Masakona Real Citizens, but the play-offs might prove to be a tough hurdle. The chairperson of Koki FC, Mr Koki Mal-

uleke, said earlier this week that everything was going well with their preparations and he was oozing confidence.

Mr Godfrey Masindi, the manager of Masakona Young Tigers, said he had reason to believe that his team was ready for any opponents. According to him, the spirit is high in the camp.

Mr Dennis Mukwevho of Mauluma Eagles United said that they had put aside some attractive incentives for the players in case they managed to win the mini league matches. He stated that the team had been training hard for the past weeks.

The three matches to be played at Malamulele Stadium promise to provide lots of entertainment. in the opening match Tshivhazwaulu Peace Makers will come up against Univen FC. Univen FC are one of the dark horses in the promotional playoffs, but Peace Makers are sharpened to kill after beating Vondwe XI Bullets 2-0 in their Nwali Soccer Tournament match at the Khubvi Benjie’s Grounds last Saturday.

The second match will be between Mukula Fast Eleven and SMSA FC. The final match, starting at 15:00 will be between Merwe United and Basel FC.

Masutha, also known as “The Prophet,” joined VFA earlier this year from Black Leopards when VFA was among the bottom three teams in the league standings. Under Masutha’s guidance, the team’s performance improved significantly, and they finished the league program in 11th position with 38 points.

While Munzhelele did not

provide specific details, sources close to the club revealed that Masutha was given the opportunity to choose his own assistant coach. Mr Morgan Shivambu, the former assistant coach of Black Leopards, will apparently join Masutha as his assistant when the team begins preparations for the new season later this month. Masutha and Shivambu had previously worked together at Black Leopards for several years.

Furthermore, Masutha has recommended the appointment of Mr Alex Muruba as the team’s physical trainer, and the club’s management has approved this recommendation without any conditions. Additionally, the club has decided to extend the employment contract of Mr Azwinn-

dini Maphaha, who has been coaching the goalkeepers in the club for the past two seasons, for another 12 months.

to lift the Nwali soccer trophy on Friday afternoon?

The semi-final and final matches of the Nwali Soccer Tournament will be played at the Khubvi Benjie’s Grounds tomorrow (Friday). The

teams that managed to reach the semi-final stage are Berea FC, Tshimuthe FC, Tshivhazwaulu Peace Makers and Mukula Young Santos.

The first semi-final will be between Mukula Young Santos and Tshimuthe FC. The game is scheduled to start at 09:00. Tshimuthe’s way to the semi-final round went via Rockers FC, whom they narrowly beat 1-0 in their quarter-final match at the same venue last Sunday. Tshimuthe, however, will have to up their game if they want to play in the final. Judging by Santos’ performance against United Artists in their quarter-final match, Tshimuthe will have their work cut out for them. Although they are campaigning in the higher division, United Artists were brutally crushed 3-1 by Santos.

The second semi-final match, which is scheduled to start at 11:00, will be between Berea FC and Tshivhazwaulu Peace Makers, who did the unexpected when they beat Vondwe XI Bullets 2-0 in their quarter-final match last Saturday. Berea FC, in turn, beat Nweli Stone Breakers 3-0 to secure a place in the semi-final round.

The prize-giving ceremony will be held at the grounds shortly after the final game. The champions will receive R10 000, a floating trophy, gold medals and a soccer ball. The runners-up will take home R7 000, a soccer ball and silver medals.

Cash amounting to R4 000, a soccer ball and bronze medals are awaiting the team finishing in the third position, while the fourthplaced side will be presented with R3 000.
