Justice for Basjan

According to the sworn affidavit of owners Anri and Renier Fourie, they live on a small farm just outside of Louis Trichardt, along the N1 south. On 15 December 2021, their male German Pointer called Basjan apparently got shocked by an electric fence. This caused him to deviate from his normal behaviour and he ran away.

His absence from the farm was not immediately noticed as Anri was in Polokwane that day. She did, however, immediately notice that Basjan was not there upon her return and started looking for him.

She and her husband’s search, however, did not yield any positive results and by that evening, they posted a message on their farm watch WhatsApp group, asking their neighbours to please help find Basjan. Their message of the missing Basjan was also shared on other socialmedia platforms, including on the local SPCA’s Facebook page.

Worried sick about where Basjan could be, Anri resumed her search for him around 05:00 the next day. She came upon one of their staff members and asked him to enquire from the other farm workers whether they might have spotted Basjan

Later that morning, Anri received a call from the same staff member, informing her that a staff member of Bizo Lodge near them had said he knew where Basjan supposedly was. At that stage, she was in town on business but immediately rushed back.

Back on the farm, she picked up her employee and drove to Bizo Lodge, where they were met by the

45yearold Performance Ncube (45). According to Anri, Ncube told them that Basjan had been struck by a truck on the N1 and had died in the field, the location of which he could go and show them.

Anri and her employee drove to the scene with Ncube, but she did not go with the two men into the veld to Basjan’s carcass. Instead, she asked her employee to take pictures of Basjan

Upon her employee’s return, she immediately noticed that the pictures did not support Ncube’s story that their dog had been hit by a truck. She immediately drove back to their farm and asked her husband Renier to come with her to where Basjan had been found.

Renier took a video in the veld where they found Basjan and everything indeed pointed to the fact that Basjan had not been struck by a truck and died. Firstly, he had a wire noose around his neck that was tied to a tree. He also had a huge gash on his back. What was also evident was that Basjan had not died immediately but had probably been strangled in the wire snare.

Outraged, Renier confronted Ncube, upon which the latter admitted that he was the one who had killed the dog.

Basjan’s carcass was brought to the Blouberg Animal Clinic for a post mortem. This revealed that the injuries to his back were caused by bluntforce trauma. It also confirmed that Basjan was not dead when he was tied down with the wire snare but had suffocated much later. “There is no clear evidence

of a decisively fatal injury leading to a quick death; this the dog must have suffered for a long time before death,” the post mortem report reads.

Following the report, the Louis Trichardt SPCA’s inspector Lawrence Khodobo laid criminal

charges against Ncube. These charges were brought under the Animals Protection Act, Act 71 of 1962. The trial dragged on for more than a year, costing Ncube thousands of rands in legal fees. (Contd on P2)

Current road repairs is a joint venture with RAL

Residents have noticed by know the flurry of activity regarding the rehabilitation of streets in Louis Trichardt, with many asking: Why now? Is this because election time is coming around again?

Irrespective of the reasons why, however, the general feeling is one of gratitude. Louis Trichardt’s streets have lapsed into a mine field of potholes over the years, a situation made worse this year after the recent heavy rains. Some streets have literally deteriorated to such an extent that they have become almost undrivable. These include, among others, sections of Protea and Eland Street, and gravel is now being used on a large scale as an interim quick fix. Leeu Street also counts among the streets desperately in need of a “makeover”.

What came as a bit of a surprise was when construction workers were spotted all across town, not only fixing potholes but also completely rebuilding some streets. The scale of the project begged the question: Surely this is not the work of the Makhado Municipality?

Municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi confirmed this week that the current spate of repairs and rebuilding of roads is being done jointly by the municipality and the Road Agency Limpopo (RAL).

“Phase 1 of the following streets has already been completed: Grobler, Kleynhans and Erasmus. The following streets are currently being rehabilitated: Devenish, Hlanganani, Baobab and part of Grobler, President and Kruger,” said Bobodi.

Bobodi also confirmed that the municipality was busy patching potholes in Leopard, Leeu, Buffalo, Einde, Louis Botha, Eiland and Rissik Street. “We’re also doing the same at [the] Waterval and Dzanani Regions,” said Bobodi.

As for other streets to be rehabilitated during the 2023/24 financial year, Bobodi said these streets included Rissik, Unika, Songozwi,

Barnard, Snyman, Malva and part of Grobler, as well as paving at the fourway intersection on the corner of Stubbs and Krogh Street.

In reaction to the current spate of repairs, local DA ward councillor Cllr Pierre Smalle said that the poor condition of a lot of the roads now being repaired had in recent months formed part of numerous formal written complaints by him to the municipality. “There is a huge backlog on road maintenance in town that needs urgent attention. The condition of our roads has a direct impact on the town’s economy,” Smalle said.

Smalle said that from his first day as ward councillor he had embarked on a process of identifying the backlogs in maintenance of critical infrastructure. This led to numerous written requests and motions to the council to improve service delivery. Sadly, Smalle said, they had found that, in the past, officials only jumped into action when election time came around. “The state of roads in specifically Ward 8, Louis Trichardt, is a constant discussion point, where we have talked to officials of the technical department on numerous occasions,” said Smalle.

Overall, however, Smalle is satisfied with the current rehabilitation programme “I am grateful that at least the roads are receiving attention. I am also sure local businesses and people using those roads daily are very grateful, and although it does cause a frustration here and there, it does help our town to move forward. It gives us our pride back,” Smalle said. He added that he was getting good feedback from both the contractors involved in the current project and officials of RAL. “They also want to see good roads in our town,” Smalle said.

Local Freedom Front Plus representative Werner Esterhuizen said that since he became a councillor, the issue of the town’s roads had also been high on his agenda. He also thinks that the current flurry of work is an attempt to score political points for next year’s election and he feels sad that infrastructure should be destroyed almost completely before being fixed or replaced.

Jeandré vinnig besig om te herstel

For years now, Pretorius Street east of Kort Street in Louis Trichardt has been in horrible condition. Many are happy that this road is finally getting paved to make it drivable again. This photo was taken on the corner of Pretorius and Grobler Street.

Criminal record for man who tortures family dog to death

(Contd from P1)

In the end, his efforts were futile as Magistrate Bennie Smith convicted Ncube of animal cruelty on 24 May under

section 2(1)(a) of the Animal Protection Act, which reads: “ …overloads, overdrives, overrides, illtreats, neglects, infuriates, TORTURES or

maims or cruelly beats, kicks, goads or terrifies an animal...”

Ncube’s sentencing was postponed until 31 May, when he was sentenced to a R3 000 fine or six months’ imprisonment, suspended for a period of five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence.

Khodobo stated this week that although he would have liked a harsher sentence, he was happy about the outcome of the case. “This man now has a criminal record,” said Khodobo.

Khodobo thanked the magistrate in the case, as well as state prosecutor Mr Makhado, who went out of his way to secure a conviction. “Justice was shown for Basjan and his owners,” said Khodobo. He also once again warned all those who find pleasure in hurting animals. “This should be a lesson to all out there that animals have rights, and those rights need to be respected,” said Khodobo. He also urged members of the public once more to report any acts of cruelty towards animals and not wait until it is too late.

Jeandré se spraak was baie aangetas.

André was ‘n ware legende in die onderwys gewees

Hy was 86 jaar oud gewees.

In klasver

verder.

(Markus 11:24).

Have Indian traders in Vhembe become soft targets for criminals?

The increasing number of kidnappings, especially targeting Indian traders in Vhembe, has become a source of great concern. In recent times, several incidents where prominent businesspeople or members of their families have been kidnapped and ransom demanded have occurred. In some cases, the families of the victims had to pay large ransoms in exchange for the release of their loved ones. Details about the incidents are sketchy as families do not speak about them openly for fear of their safety. Whether a syndicate might be at work or these are the acts of small groups of

Hierdie week, 25 jaar

criminals is still unclear at this point.

In the past few months, several kidnapping incidents were reported in the Thohoyandou area and other parts of the Limpopo province. Mr Pratham Berawala (20) from Thohoyandou P East was kidnapped on 3 January this year and released the next day. He was driving from his home to town when he was abducted.

An eightyearold girl was kidnapped near her home on her way from school on 9 March this year and released two days later (on 11 March).

Ms Hafsa Nazir Patel (48) was kidnapped outside her house on 29 June 2022 and released the same night.

Mr Muntazir Hanif (35) was kidnapped on 3 February this year on his way home and released again two days later (on 5 February).

These are just a few of the reported cases in the Thohoyandou area.

In one of the most recent incidents, a 65yearold Thohoyandou businessman spent a horrific six days in the hands of kidnappers. On 31 May, Mr Ismail Muhammed Patel was abducted and taken to an unknown address, where the kidnappers started making demands for ransom. They allegedly made withdrawals from his bank accounts and left him starved while they used his money. On 5 June, he was released. Whether any ransom money was paid for his release remains unclear. His family has requested privacy, stating that he was still under severe stress and too traumatised to speak about the matter.

The question being raised by many is whether Indian traders have become soft targets for criminals.

Recent crime statistics have shown an increase in kidnappings. Between January and March of this year, 3,641 kidnappings have taken place in the country - an increase of 335 compared to the previous three months, averaging 40 kidnappings per day.

An Indian community leader in Thohoyandou expressed the community’s frustration with crime, saying that regular meetings with the police to address crimerelated issues had ceased three years ago. Since then, they have had no peace in the area, with robberies and kidnappings occurring all around. The community feel as if they have become cash cows for criminals, and despite providing information about the criminals to the police, no action is being taken to apprehend them. The community feels besieged and fearful, not knowing who the next victim will be. Recent crime statistics have shown an increase in kidnappings. Between January and March of this year, 3,641 kidnappings have taken place in the country an increase of 335 compared to the previous three months, averaging 40 kidnappings per day. Kidnappings for ransom are also on the rise, particularly in the Eastern Cape and Gauteng, where businesspeople, especially foreigners, are being targeted.

Last Friday, a prominent Limpopo businessman, Mr Solly Tayob, was abducted in Burgersfort. The police reported that Mr. Tayob was standing at his filling station next to his Hyundai dealership when the incident occurred at about 19:30.

The incident has sent shockwaves and fear throughout the closely knit Indian community.

At the time of our going to press, no comment had been received from the SAPS in Limpopo.

Pat on the back for C-BRTA, but business operators lose out

The Cross-Border Road Transport Agency (C-BRTA) has recorded success, following a Joint law-enforcement operation at a weighbridge outside Musina, towards the Beitbridge Border Post, on Thursday, 1 June.

Established in 1998, the CBRTA’s road transport inspectorate’s primary role is to ensure compliance with crossborder road transport through inspections and prosecutions of illegal operators. In 2017, CBRTA’s lawenforcement unit was temporarily transferred to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), but in April of this

year, the unit was transferred back to CBRTA. This is the first operation since the lawenforcement unit was transferred back to the agency. “We are back with a bang,” the entity has warned road users.

Advocate Linda Mbana, the executive manager for regulatory services and law enforcement, urges all road users to comply. “We will continue to be on the roads to make sure that those who are not complying [stay] within the ambit of the law. The entity is going to be hot on your heels if you do not comply with the law,” she said.

From 1 to 5 June, the entity recorded the following statistics: Inspections conducted 4,000; notices in respect of

expired permits and for not adhering to permit conditions – 600; overloading – 50; speeding – 15; arrests of illegal immigrants – 44; vehicles impounded – 6; and arrests for fraudulent permits 3.

Although the operation is lauded as a success, businesspeople at the border and around Musina told Limpopo Mirror that it had a knockon effect on their businesses as the movement of people was now limited. “I depend a lot on people who come in and leave the country, but as long as the operation is still on, my business will not make any money,” said a spaza shopowner who preferred to remain anonymous.

Well-known businessman says farewell to Bushveld

With a sense of great sadness, Louis Trichardt residents will be saying goodbye to wellknown businessman George Boyd, who will be

moving to Cape Town where he will be living with his daughter Janine and family.

George and wife Emily (who passed away in August 2004) moved to Louis Trichardt in 1970 and owned the Tunnel Roadhouse for four years (where BB Mount Fuji Motors is today). This was then sold and George decided to take the leap and venture into the motorspares business. He ran that successfully with Neville Dix until they sold in 1989. He then bought the former Punch Bowl Liquor store and later sold it to Manny de Sousa.

George came out of retirement in 1996 and started Rainbow Midas, which grew to where it is today, often winning franchise of the year. The business has now been bought and is run by his youngest and very capable daughter, Ruth.

Apart from his business career, George has been an active Freemason for 60 years. He is also the most senior mason in Louis Trichardt and Musina, receiving the grand rank from the Duke of Kent in London. He also joined the local Rotary Club, which he attended regularly until arthritis started creeping up. He enjoyed donating to various charities and taking part in drives for donations to people in need.

At 86, George is now leaving the Bushveld and heading for Table Mountain. “Uncle George has always been very proud of his achievements, being part of such a fantastic community. He will miss his fellow Brethren, Rotarians and friends and would like to say thank you to all the people of Louis Trichardt for being the wonderful community they are,” said Janine.

Sunday 16 July

Delville Wood commemorated

July 2023 marks the 107th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, one of the bloodiest battles in human history.

Between 1 July and 18 November 1916, more than one million men were wounded or killed on the banks of the river Somme in France. Among the soldiers killed and injured were more than 2 400 South Africans who fought for control over a small piece of land in the northeast of France, called Delville Wood.

On Sunday, 16 July, at 11:00, a special service will be held at the MOTHs’ Turbi Hills Shellhole to commemorate Delville Wood and to pay tribute to the South African soldiers who lost their lives during this war. For more information, Old Bill Ben Wolff can be contacted at 084 368 7045.

The MEC for Health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, addressed hawkers and shoppers in Musina during the Stop Cholera Awareness Campaign that was held in the Musina CBD last Friday (2 June). Ramathuba said she would cry her eyes out if someone from Limpopo should die from cholera as the disease is preventable and curable when treated in time.

The campaign follows the National Institute of Communicable Diseases’ announcement about the first cholera case in Musina, after a 26yearold Zimbabwean national tested positive. The man was treated and discharged again from Messina Hospital last week.

During her address, Ramathuba urged community members to practice basic hygiene to keep them safe from infections. “The best way to make drinking water safe is to boil it before use. By so doing, you will be killing any germs that might have been contaminating the water and save yourself from illness,” she said.

Ramathuba urged businesspeople who sell food at the local taxi rank to follow health protocols at all times. “Always wash your hands with soap before and after you serve any customer,” she said and encouraged them to observe health protocols.

She said that another thing that could enhance the spread of cholera was the unacceptable behaviour of people who re

lieved themselves everywhere.

“During rains, this human waste flows into the water sources, and if people use the infected water, they will be infected with diseases like cholera. We also encourage those with little babies to wash their hands before and after changing nappies.”

She further advised people not to ignore any cholera symptoms.

“If you have watery diarrhoea and vomiting, immediately mix eight teaspoons of sugar and half teaspoon of salt into warm water and drink it, then rush to your nearest healthcare facility,” she said.

From the Musina CBD, Ramathuba continued her campaign at the Beitbridge Border Post and the ZZ2 Mike Farm.

Louis Trichardt plays host to United Reformed Church’s

The United Reformed Church of Southern Africa (URCSA) celebrated its 160th anniversary at Louis Trichardt High School’s stadium on Sunday, 4 June. Representatives from the church in Gauteng and Northwest, as well as traditional leaders and dignitaries from different structures, attended the celebration, while busloads of congregants arrived for the event.

Rev Anderson Magwira said the celebration was important for the church. “From humble beginnings, we can look back today with pride and say we have made huge strides. We have

160th celebrations

achieved a lot during our 160 years of existence,” he said.

“This church has worked so hard to change the lives of many people around the country. We have fought against poverty by implementing different community projects, and we are still going to make sure that the lives of our fellow human beings are improved. It is our duty to unify the nation, and we believe that we are still going to contribute more to the development of the community. Our mission is to save the spirits of human beings, but it is also important to cater for their physical needs. That is one of the reasons why our church is wholly involved in community development,” Magwira said.

Limpopo-atlete bult hul spiere op LMB Makhado

Sterkman-kompetisie

Afgeneem is Louis Trichardt se eerstespan ná hulle oorwinning Saterdag. Louis Trichardt se AC Geldenhuys was beste agterspeler van die wedstryd, terwyl spanmaat Solly Mukhuthu aangewys is as beste voorspeler. Foto verskaf.

Vir Limpopo was Amir Bux Saif in verwoestende vorm.

Toeskouers is welkom.
