Circulation of the existing building There are some issues appearent when observing the circulation of the current state of 338 City Road. There is only one staircase trough wich you can get upstairs. This is a potential fire hazard in case of a fire as if it gets blocked there is no other options to use. The lack of lifts makes the upper floors not wheelchair accessible and the transportation of heavy objects quite tidious. Also the position of it is unlucky, as it cuts the front block in half, and it not extends tio the fourth floor.

Revised Circulation A new circulation tower, a wheelchair accessible lift, a fire staircase and a lift for bicycle users is added for revised circulation. The main staircase has been moved to the back wall to enable maximum open space and natural light into the offices and the added emergency stairs lead down from he top trough the roof gardens. The main lift is place in the centre of the building to be conveniently reachable for everyone while an additional lift is added to transport bicycle users to the racks in the basement.

Getting Green In addition to the actual vegetation incorporated in the design ‘getting green’ also means a sustainable approach to the design. In the basement a bicycle rack, lockers and separate showers for men and women are placed to encourage workers for bicycle use. This area is accessible also by a separate lift from the ground to enable convenient transport of the bicycles to the storage. The circulation/toilet tower is operated with rainwater collected on the top of the roof. The front of the circulation tower is covered by green walls to temper smells from the toilets. A green wall is a natural air filter, a sponge to toxins and dust. Studies show that vegetation in offices increases productivity by 12% and decreases employees’ absenteeism by 15%. In the rooftop kitchen a ‘window farm’ is installed where pot plant are grown such as basil or chives that can be used to season on the spot. There is a rooftop garden on every storey allowing workers to relax or

even work outside.

Letting the light in Using the narrow house in Jakarta as a precedent the decision was made to cut a light well through the top two floors enabling natural light into the otherwise dark back wing. The inner wall is replaced by semi-transparent glass to let light in, but not disturb the private gardens on that side.
