INSPIRED BY DESIGNERS IRIS VAN HARPEN AND EIOKA ISHIOKA, I WANTED TO CREATE A COSTUME FOR THE QUEEN OF THE NIGHT FROM THE PLAY MAGIC FLUTE, THAT PLAYS WITH SHAPES AND FORMS USES EVERYDAY MATERIALS IN AN UNEXPECTED WAY AND RE-IMAGINES THE CHARACTER. THE COSTUME WAS SEWN BY ME. THE FINAL RESAULT OF THIS EXERCISE WAS A FASHION VIDEO AVAILABLE ON THE LINK BELOW.

COSTUME DESIGN for SHAKUNTALA 2017 Shakuntala is a Sanskrit play by Kalidasa written between the 1st century BCE and 4th century CE, dramatizing the story of Shakuntala told in the epic Mahabharata.

IN THE TRADITIONAL INDIAN THEATRE THE SETTING OF THE SCENE WAS MERELY INDICATED BY A COLOURED FABRIC, WHILE THE COSTUMES WERE OFTEN QUITE ELABORATE. INSPIRED BY THIS, I’VE DECIDED ON A MONOCHROMAIC VISUAL WHERE EACH SET HAS ITS OWN COLOUR. COMPLEMENTARY TO THIS, THE COSTUMES ALSO INDICATE THE EMOTIONS OF THE CHARACTER IN THE GIVEN SCENE BASED ON THE ANCIENT SANSKRIT RASA THEORY.

COSTUMES FOR NEIL GAIMEN’S NEVERWHERE 2016 Neverwhere is an urban fantasy novel by Neil Gaiman written in 1996.


RICHARD MAYHEW MALE PROTAGONIST, POV SIMPLE, EVERYDAY CLOTHING KNITTING ON JUMPER IS THE ONLY THING SETTING HIM APART: IT RESEMBLES THE PADDING OF AN ARMOURSOMETHING HE WILL DEFINATELLY NEED IN HIS ADVENTURES

MARQUIS DE CARABAS LADY DOOR FEMALE PROTAGONIST BEEN RUNNING FOR QUITE AWHILE, DRESSED IN A VARIETY OF CLOTHES THROWN OVER EACH OTHER, RIPS AND HOLES THROUGH OHER LAYERS CAN BE SEEN- I ENVISIONED HER IN PUPLES THAT ARE KNOTTED AND PLEATED TOGETHER TO FUNCTION

SELF MADE NOBLE MAN AND TRICKSTER, THE MARQIS MADE HIS OWN IMAGE AND CLOTHING- HOW SOMEONE FROM A POOR BACKGROUND WOULD IMAGINE LUXORYFUR, VELVET AND SATIN, NOT EVEN HIS COAT IS HIS OWN- JUST FOUND AND RECLAIMED.

HUNTER STRONG AND SINGLE MINDED IN HER GOAL HUNTER IS DRESSED IN FUNCIONAL BUT LIGHT COSTUME OF TRIBAL INSPIRATION. EVERYTHING ON HER SERVES FUNCTION MADE FROM NATURAL FABRICS SUCH AS LEATHER AND LINEN IN EARTHY TONES.


MR. CROUP AND MR. VANDEMAR THE FOX AND THE WOLF, THE TWO CHARACTERS ARE OPPOSITE OF EACH OTHER YET THEY ARE A PERFECT MATCH. THEY ARE DRESSED IN GROTESQUE SUIT COATS THAT CONVEY A SENSE OF THREAT. MR. CROUP IS SPORTING THE TRADITIONAL FABRICS WHILE THE MORE ELEMENTAL MR. VANDEMAR1’S HAS THE ADDITION OFLEATHERS AND METALLIC HIGHLIGHTS.

THE ANGEL, ISLINGTON THE MAIN VILLAIN, ISLINGTON IS A FALLEN ANGEL LOCKED UN IN A LABYRINTH. HIS COSTUME RESEMBLES HIS LOST WINGS WHILE HIS GLASS JEWELERIES ARE HIS SHEKELS . HIS SEMI-SEETROUGH HEADPIECE SERVES SO MORTALS CANNOT GAZE UPON HIS FACE- THUS ALSO HIDING HIS TRUE INTENTIONS.

FABRIC MANIPULATION EXERCISE 2017


IN THIS EXERCISE WE HAVE RECEIVED A PIECE OF FABRIC TO MANIPULATE. THE END GOAL WAS TO CREATE AN OUTFIT USING A FABRIC MANIPULATION TECHNIQUE. IN THE FOLLOWING SEMESTER WE HAVE USED OUR EXPERIENCE TO PICK A FABRIC OF OUR OWN, AND APPLY OUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE TECHNIQUE TO CREATE A SECOND OUTFIT.
