On arrival

The city centre can be reached from the airport in a number of ways: 1. Airport Minibus – minibuses from the airport to any destination in Budapest (return journey possible). Single tickets: 11 euros for one, 17 euros for two. 2. Főtaxi – contracted partner of Budapest Airport. Find the taxis and external desk at the airport terminal arrivals. 3. Public transport – airport bus 200E takes passengers to the Kőbánya-Kispest underground terminal, from where trains go to the centre. Bus ticket price is approx. 1 euro (approx. 1.5 euros if purchased from the driver).

Cirque Mechanics

Az április közepén megnyíló új kulturális központ és élményszínház, a RaM Colosseum egyik első látványossága a KözépEurópában először vendégszereplő Cirque Mechanics „Birdhouse Factory” című produkciója. A Charlie Chaplin és Diego Rivera inspirálta amerikai cirkuszi előadás a Guardian Magazine szerint egy zsonglőrökkel, akrobatákkal, gumiemberekkel és hajmeresztő mutatványokkal megfűszerezett látványtorta, melyből most összesen hét estén hét szelet jut a hazai közönségnek.

‘Birdhouse Factory’, a production of Cirque Mechanics, on tour in central Europe for the first time, is one of the first spectacular performances to be presented in the RaM Colosseum, Budapest’s newest cultural centre and theatre. According to the Guardian Magazine, the American circus show, inspired by Charlie Chaplin and Diego Rivera, is a visual cake sweetened by jugglers, acrobats, contortionists and hair-raising stunts. Audiences in Hungary can enjoy seven slices of the cake over seven evenings.

From Lent to the Resurrection At the Good Friday eve concert in the Palace of Arts László Deák, a former student at the Budapest Liszt Academy and the Paris Conservatoire, and a winner of several prestigious international music competitions, is leading the audience through the most important stages of Easter with the help of works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Grigny, Dupré and Reger. Perhaps the two extra special elements of the programme are five movements of Dupré’s Stations of the Cross and Grigny’s La Messe – Gloria. Complementing the French pieces are Bach and Reger choral arrangements as interpreted by conductor Péter Erdei who is joined on stage by the New Ferenc Liszt Academy Chamber Choir. A kelet-európai turnéján Zágráb és Belgrád után Budapestre érkező Drezdai Filharmonikus Zenekar olyan romantikus programot állított össze Dvořák, Brahms, Schumann és Liszt műveiből, amely jól reprezentálja a híres szász zenekari hangzás 1870 óta ápolt hagyományait. Budapesten Liszt Hamlet című szimfonikus költeménye, Schumann Tavaszi szimfóniája és Brahms a-moll kettősversenye szólal meg a hegedűs Viviane Hagner és a csellista Danjulo Ishikaza Stradivari-hangszerein. A hangversenyt John Axelrod dirigálja.

After Zagreb and Belgrade the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra is coming to Budapest as part of its east European tour with a romantic selection of works by Dvořák, Brahms, Schumann and Liszt. The programme will well represent the renowned sounds of the German orchestra whose traditions date back to 1870. In Budapest Liszt’s symphonic interpretation of Hamlet, Schumann’s Spring symphony and Brahms’ Double Concerto in A minor are being performed by violinist Viviane Hagner and cellist Danjulo Ishikaza on their Stradivari instruments. The conductor is John Axelrod.

Egry József, a Balaton festője

József Egry retrospective

Egry József (1883–1951) a modern magyar festészet egyik legmarkánsabb képviselője. A „Balaton festője” néven vonult be a hazai köztudatba, de életműve technikában és témában rendkívül gazdag, és magán viseli a múlt századelő szellemi újításainak jegyeit. A KOGART Ház gyűjteményes kiállítása a teljes életművet áttekinti, a korai művektől a kései korszakokig. A tárlat gerincét az Egryre jellemző, napfényben fürdő balatoni tájképek alkotják, de a pályája elején készült, eddig kevéssé ismert festményekkel is megismerkedhet az érdeklődő – főszereplői az utca embere: járókelők, rakodómunkások, matrózok, cselédlányok, bohémek, akik Rejtő Jenő lezser regényalakjait idézhetik a néző emlékezetébe. Az anyagot jelentős hazai közgyűjteményekből és magángyűjteményekből válogatták a kurátorok. A mintegy nyolcvan festmény és grafika mellett nagy hangsúlyt kapnak a művész személyes dokumentumai, fényképei, írásai, relikviái, a vetítőszobában pedig Zsigmond Boris 1972-es, Az ecset poétája – Egry József című dokumentumfilmje látható.

József Egry (1883–1951) is a prominent representative of modern Hungarian painting. In Hungary he is generally referred to as the ‘painter of Lake Balaton’, yet his oeuvre both technically and in its subject matter is extremely rich with the characteristic features of the intellectual innovations of the early 20th century. The retrospective exhibition in the Kogart House presents Egry’s entire oeuvre from his early works to the late periods. Balaton landscapes bathing in sunshine so characteristic of the artist constitute the backbone of the exhibition, yet his lesser-known paintings created at the beginning of his career are also on display – the protagonist of these early paintings is the man on the street: passers-by, porters, sailors, maids and Bohemians, who might remind one of the happy-go-lucky characters of a Jenő Rejtő novel. Curators have selected the works from prominent Hungarian public and private collections. The artist’s personal documents, photographs, writings and relics are given prominence alongside the some eighty paintings and graphic works. The documentary The Poet of the Brush – Egry József made by Boris Zsigmond in 1972 can be viewed in the projection room.

A spirituális Liszt Liszt már fiatalon fogékony volt a vallás, a transzcendencia iránt – először alig 16 évesen merült fel benne a papi pálya gondolata, huszonévesen pedig Lamennais abbé eszméi gyakoroltak rá igen erős hatást. Amikor Rómába költözött, érdeklődése az egyházi zene felé fordult: tanulmányozta a régi mesterek, közük Palestrina zenéjét és a gregoriánt, az ősi egyszólamú egyházi énekeket. A késői Liszt spiritualizmusa azonban kifejezetten modern műveket eredményezett, olyan darabokat, amelyek a XX. század zenéjére jelentős hatást gyakoroltak. Csalog Gábor és Kemenes András zongoraestjén Liszt modern spirituális opusai között elhangzik a Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen variációsorozat és a Via Crucis kétzongorás változata.

The spiritual Liszt Already in his youth Liszt was responsive to religious and transcendental influences. He was barely 16 when he first contemplated becoming a priest and at the age of 20 the ideas of Abbé Lamennais had a very strong effect on him. After moving to Rome his interests turned to sacred music and he studied the old masters, for example the music of Palestrina and the ancient liturgical plainsong known as Gregorian chant. The spirituality of the later Liszt, however, resulted in decidedly modern works which had a significant influence on the music of the 20 th century. Among Liszt’s modern spiritual works presented by pianists Gábor Csalog and András Kemenes will be Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen variations and Via Crucis for two pianos. Varnus Xaver hétesztendős volt, amikor a már akkor világhírű Rhoda Scott megbabonázta elbűvölő orgonajátékával Magyarországot. A kisfiú ámulva nézte a tévében a korszak kultikus figuráját, és elhatározta, belőle is világhíres orgonista válik majd. Álma olyannyira vallóra vált, hogy mára háromezer koncerten van túl, játszott a párizsi Notre-Dame-tól kezdve a Canterbury-i székesegyházon át mindenhol, még a világ legnagyobb orgonáján, a híres-hírhedt philadelphiai Wanamakeren is. Negyvenhetedik születésnapja előestéjén Varnus Xavér rendkívüli ajándékkal lepi meg önmagát és rajongótáborát: barátságos orgonapárbajra hívja ki gyermekkori idolját és mai napig tartó csodálatának tárgyát, Rhoda Scottot, akivel egyszer már sikerült együtt eljátszaniuk Mozart Török-indulóját – „négykézláb”.

Xaver Varnus was seven years old when the already internationally famous Rhoda Scott mesmerised Hungary with her captivating organ playing. The young boy marvelled at the cult figure on the TV and decided that one day he, too, would be a world-famous organist. His dream was fulfilled to such an 21. 14:08:02 extent that he has now given more than 3000 concerts and has played everywhere, including the cathedrals of Notre Dame and Canterbury, and even on the world’s biggest organ, the famous Wanamaker in Philadelphia. On the eve of his 47th birthday Xaver Varnus is entertaining himself and his fans with a special offering. He has challenged his childhood idol Rhoda Scott – whom he still greatly admires – to a friendly organ duel. The pair have already successfully played together, performing ‘with four hands and four feet’ Mozart’s Turkish March.

Entering a bistro you spontaneously leave behind the bustle of the city and the treadmill of everyday life. The daily offers chalked up on a blackboard, the minimalist furnishing, the family atmosphere and the gastro-art creations recalling home-made flavours call an immediate halt to drab reality. The always friendly bartender brings to mind the French atmosphere of the film Amelie, while the deliberately naked walls and colourful interior give a certain Latin or Spanish feel to the place. Tommy Emmanuel Márciusban és áprilisban zenekarával is bemutatkozik Európában az ausztrál zeneszerző-gitárvirtuóz, Tommy Emmanuel. Az Ausztrália legnagyobb gitárosának kikiáltott muzsikus már hatévesen olyan magas szinten pengette a húrokat, hogy állandó szerepet kapott a szinte nomád életet élő, országszerte turnézó „családi vállalkozásban”. Együttesükben Tommy vitte gitárján a ritmusszekciót, bátyja, Phil szólógitárosként, öccse, Chris dobosként, nővére, Virginia pedig slide-gitárosként működött közre. 1985-ben csatlakozott a Dragon nevű kultikus ausztrál rockformációhoz, mellyel két évvel később már Tina Turner „Break Every Rule” turnéjának előzenekaraként léphettek fel. 1997-ben gyermekkori álmai váltak valóra: közös albumot készített példaképével, Chet Atkins-szel, melyet a megjelenést követően szinte azonnal Grammy-díjra jelöltek. Karrierje következő csúcspontjaként bátyjával, Phillel együtt lépett fel Sydneyben a 2000-es nyári Olimpia záróünnepségén. The Australian composer and guitar wizard Tommy Emmanuel is currently touring Europe with his band. Known as Australia’s greatest guitarist, he was already plucking the strings so well at the age of six that he became part his ‘family formation’, practically living a nomadic life touring the country. In the band Tommy led the rhythm section on guitar, his older brother Phil was the solo guitarist, his younger brother Chris played the drums, while his sister Virginia was the slide guitarist. In 1985 he joined the Australian cult rock group Dragon, which two years later accompanied Tina Turner on her ‘Break Every Rule’ tour as the support band. In 1997 his childhood dreams came true when he made a joint album with his idol Chet Atkins, which was nominated for a Grammy award almost immediately on being released. The following high point was when he appeared with his brother Phil in Sydney at the closing ceremony of the 2000 summer Olympics. During his current tour, ‘Acoustic & Electric’, he is playing the electric guitar for the first time in Europe and thus electric sounds feature prominently. Két Rota, egy szenvedély Two Rotas – one passion Nino Rota születésének századik évfordulója alkalmából nagyszabású gálakoncertre kerül sor április 10-én a Budapesti Kongresszusi Központban. A Rómeó és Júliától a Keresztapáig című filmzenei válogatás karmestere a húszéves Failoni zenekar és a DIV4S olasz női szoprán kvartett élén Marcello Rota lesz. A filmzene keresztapjának is nevezett Nino Rota távoli unokafivére, Marcello számos zenekar, köztük a prágai Nemzeti Szimfonikusok állandó vendégkarmestere. The Budapest Congress Center is hosting a major gala concert on 10 April to mark the centenary of the birth of Nino Rota. Marcello Rota will conduct the 20-year-old Failoni Orchestra and the DIV4S Italian soprano women’s quartet, presenting a selection of film music ranging from Romeo and Juliet to The Godfather. Marcello, a distant relative of Nino Rota, known as the godfather of film music, is a frequent guest conductor of several orchestras, including the Czech National Symphony Orchestra.

– Mondana néhány szót Nino Rota életművéről?

Could you say a few words about the oeuvre of Nino Rota?

– Nino Rota zenéje örök. Filmzenei munkássága csak egy része az életművének. Számos operát, szimfonikus és kamarazenei művet, balettzenét írt. Ám kétségtelen, hogy a filmklasszikusok, mint a Rómeó és Júlia, az Országúton, a Nyolc és fél vagy a Keresztapa tette őt híressé. Az olyan jeles alkalom, mint most, születésének a centenáriuma, kitüntetett pillanat filmzenei örökségének a felelevenítésére. Az újítás annyi, hogy a szimfonikus zenekar mellett egy négytagú női operavokállal, a DIV4S- el kibővítve koncertezünk.

Nino Rota’s music is eternal, though his film music is just one part of his life’s work. He also composed numerous operas, ballets, symphonies and chamber music. Certainly the film classics like Romeo and Juliet, The Road, 8½ and The Godfather made him famous. It’s an excellent occasion and special moment, the centenary of his birth, to evoke the legacy of his film music. The innovation is that besides the symphonic orchestra the concert will be enriched with the opera vocals of DIV4S, comprising four women.

– Milyen rokoni kapcsolat fűzte Nino Rotához?

What is your relation to Nino Rota?

– Távoli. Erről nem szívesen beszélek, mert ha azt mondom, hogy rokonok voltunk, rám fogják, hogy ennek köszönhetően csináltam zenei karriert. Elég fiatal, húszéves voltam a halálakor. Főleg az élete vége felé találkoztam vele jó néhányszor, de gyerekkoromból is őrzök róla emlékeket.

It’s a distant one. I don’t like to talk about it, since if I say that we were related people think it enabled me to make a career in music. I was fairly young, 20 years old, when he died. I met him on several occasions mainly towards the end of his life, but I’ve also got memories of him from my childhood.

– Milyen ember volt?

What kind of person was he?

– Amilyen a zenéje. Áradó, nagyvonalú, érzékeny. És szerény. Kiváltképpen a nagyvonalúságát emelném ki, mindenkin segített, aki csak hozzá fordult. Amikor a Keresztapa 2 kísérőzenéjéért elnyerte az Oscar-díjat, ösztöndíjat hozott létre az összes zeneiskolai növendéknek Bariban, ahol egykoron zenetanárként dolgozott. Ma is rendszeresen találkozom emberekkel, aki hálával emlékeznek rá, mert támogatta őket anyagilag, művészileg, akár olyan módon is, hogy hangszereket vett nekik, hogy megtanulhassanak zenélni.

Like his music – radiating, grandiose, sensitive, as well as unpretentious. In particular I would highlight his generosity. He would help whoever turned to him. When he won an Oscar for his music accompanying The Godfather 2 he established a scholarship for all the music school students in Bari, where he once worked as a music teacher. Today I regularly meet people who remember him with gratitude since he supported them financially and artistically, even buying an instrument for them so they could learn to play.

– Fellini a mágikus barát elnevezést alkalmazta Rotára. Mit értett ez alatt?

Fellini described Rota as a magical friend. What did he mean by that?

– Emberi és művészi kvalitásokat. Egy olasz társulattal A mágikus barát címen készítettünk néhány éve egy előadást Rotáról, pontosabban Rota és Fellini közös filmtörténetéről. Ebben az előadásban is úgy elevenedett meg a Maestro, mint egy zenei mágus, akit nem lehetett megelőzni pontosságban, a témák kidolgozottságában. Minden zenekari próbára, forgatásra, stúdiófelvételre elsőként érkezett, tökéletesen felkészülten. A fegyelmezettség és a művészi alázat is a legfőbb erényei közé tartozott.

Human and artistic qualities. A few years ago I made a performance with an Italian company about Rota entitled The Magical Friend. More precisely it was about the joint film-making of Rota and Fellini. The performance brought the maestro to life as a musical magician who couldn’t be beaten when it came to precision and composition. At every rehearsal, shooting and studio recording he was always the first to arrive, fully prepared. Discipline and artistic humility were also among his greatest virtues.

– Ezzel szemben az egyéb, színpadi és operai munkássága mintha elfelejtődött volna.

Yet his other, theatre and opera works are as if forgotten.

– Valóban, ha Nino Rota zenéjéről van szó, sokakban elsőre a Keresztapa visszatérő motívuma, a Nyolc és fél fináléjának a keringője vagy az Országúton Gelsominájának fájdalmas trombitája „szólal meg”. Megkockáztatom, az ő zenéje nélkül ezek a filmek nem válhattak volna remekművekké. Ha jól emlékszem, 1973-ban készített egy híres balettet a milánói Scalának az Országútonból, amit később én is vezényeltem ugyanott. Sokat dolgozott Béjart-ral is, aki az ő zenéjére készítette A képzelt beteg koreográfiáját Milánóban, Párizsban, Brüsszelben. Operaszerzőként pedig az egyik leghíresebb operája Az olasz szalmakalap. – Mennyire törekszik arra, hogy az ismeretlen Rotát is bemutassa a közönségnek?

– Maximálisan. Többek között a veronai Arénában nagy szimfonikus esteket dedikálunk Rotának. Amennyire lehetőségem nyílik, aktivizálom magam a centenáriumi koncertekkel. A filmzenei válogatás Budapest után Mallorcán, Prágában, Pozsonyban, Torinóban, Milánóban, Rómában „turnézik”, ezek mellett az év folyamán Rota szimfonikus műveinek, operáinak, szakrális zenéinek szentelt koncerteket tartanak Itália-szerte, sok esetben az én vezényletemmel. És rengeteg más esemény, koncert, megemlékezés zajlik Európában, a tengerentúlon. – Rota zenéi örökségének a képviseleten túl mire terjed ki az ön karmesteri munkássága?

– Mint a legtöbb karmesternek, elég széles a repertoárom. Éppúgy vezényelek olasz operákat, mint szimfonikus műveket. Jó néhány zenekar vendégkarmestere vagyok és számos világhírű szólista, operaénekes koncertjét dirigálom. Indeed. If we’re talking about the music of Nino Rota many people primarily recall the recurrent themes of The Godfather, the waltz in the finale of 8½ or Gelsomina’s sorrowful trumpet solo in The Road. I would venture to say that without his music these films would not have become great works. If I remember correctly, in 1973 he created a noted ballet based on The Road for La Scala in Milan. Later I conducted it there. He also worked a lot with Béjart, who with his music created the choreography for The Hypochondriac in Milan, Paris and Brussels. As an opera composer, however, one of Rota’s most famous works is The Italian Straw Hat. To what extent do you aim to introduce the unknown Rota to the public?

To the utmost. For example, we are dedicating major symphony evenings at the Verona Arena to Rota. I’m taking part in centenary concerts as much as possible. After Budapest the film music selection will be ‘touring’ to Majorca, Prague, Bratislava, Turin, Milan and Rome, and besides this throughout the year there will be concerts across Italy dedicated to Rota’s symphonies, operas and church music, with me conducting on many occasions. There are also countless other events, concerts and commemorations both in Europe and overseas. Apart from representing the musical heritage of Rota, what else does your work as a conductor involve?

Like most conductors I have a fairly broad repertoire and conduct Italian operas as well as symphonic works. I’m a guest conductor for quite a lot of orchestras and direct the performances of numerous internationally renowned soloists and opera singers. David Helfgott neve bizonyára olyanok számára is ismerősen cseng, akik nem mozognak otthonosan a komolyzene világában. Ő az a világhírű ausztrál zongoraművész, akinek az élettörténete alapján készült a hét Oscar-díjra jelölt „Ragyogj” (Shine) című életrajzi dráma – a főszerepet alakító Geoffrey Rush a legjobb férfiszínész kategóriában haza is vihette az aranyszobrocskát. Davidet csodagyerekként tartották számon, ám zsarnoki apja megtiltotta fiának, hogy a maga útját járja. Tinédzser korában hiába ajánlotta fel a híres hegedűművész, Isaac Stern, hogy taníttatja a fiút, az apa mindenképpen zongoraművészt akart faragni belőle. Miután egy, a Royal College of Music-ben adott koncertjét követően idegösszeomlást kapott, mindenki azt gondolta, hogy a sokat ígérő zongoraművészi karrierjének befellegzett. A ’80-as években egy barátjának köszönhetően David megismerkedett jelenlegi asztrológus feleségével, aki hihetetlen odaadással és önfeláldozással segített a művésznek megtalálnia régi önmagát, hogy a műfaj ünnepelt sztárjaként ismét a világ legnevesebb koncerttermeiben léphessen fel. David Helfgott évente csak néhány szólókoncertet vállal, éppen ezét igazi kuriózum a május 8-i budapesti fellépés, melyen Rachmanyinov- és Liszt-művek csendülnek fel.

A két zenészcsaládból az 1970-es években Dél-Franciaországban alakult zenekar neve ma már egyet jelent a flamenco fogalmával. A Reyes és a Baliardo család elődei közül többen is népszerű muzsikusok voltak – José Reyes és a Baliardocsalád gitáros papája, Manitas de Plata duója már az 1950es években jelentős koncertsikereket aratott. John Steinbeck, Charlie Chaplin, Pablo Picasso, Miles Davis és Salvador Dali mind a flamenco-kettős csodálói közé tartoztak. Apjuk halála után a Reyes-fiúk egy cigány zarándokúton kerültek közelebb a Baliardo-családhoz, ahol egymásnak átadva a gitárt közösen énekeltek, boroztak, és közben szépen lassan, észrevétlen, zenekarrá álltak össze. Az eredetileg választott Los Reyes (azaz királyok) nevet később megváltoztatták – így lett belőlük Gipsy Kings, vagyis Cigánykirályok. Az életvidám gitárjáték és a szenvedélyes vokál pályafutásuk alatt a csapat védjegyévé vált. Világszerte több mint 14 millió albumukat adták el, platina válogatáslemezük, a The Best of the Gipsy Kings egy évnél is tovább szerepelt a slágerlistákon.

The name Gipsy Kings, a group formed from two musical families in southern France in the 1970s, is today synonymous with flamenco. Among the forebears of the Reyes and Baliardo families there were several popular musicians. The duo comprising José Reyes and Manitas de Plata, guitar-playing father of the Baliardo family, notched up significant successful concert appearances in the 1950s. John Steinbeck, Charlie Chaplin, Pablo Picasso, Miles Davis and Salvador Dali were all admirers of the flamenco duo. After their father’s death the Reyes sons encountered the Baliardo family at a gipsy gathering and, exchanging guitars, they sang, drank wine and slowly, imperceptibly, they began to form a band. The original name of Los Reyes (The Kings) later evolved into Gipsy Kings, their extremely lively guitar playing and passionate vocals becoming the hallmark of their style. David Helfgott in Budapest The name David Helfgott is surely known even to those who are not fully familiar with classical music. He is the internationally renowned Australian pianist whose life story formed the basis for the biographical drama Shine, which was nominated for seven Oscars. Geoffrey Rush, in the leading role, won the golden statuette for best male actor. David Helfgott was regarded as a child prodigy, though his tyrannical father refused to let him follow his own inclinations. When he was a teenager the noted violinist Isaac Stern suggested that he would have the boy taught, but his father was determined that he would be a pianist at all costs. On one occasion he had a nervous breakdown following a concert at the Royal College of Music and everyone thought that his promising career as a pianist was over. In the 1980s through a friend David met his present wife, an astrologer who with incredible devotion and self-sacrifice helped him to rediscover his old self so he could again appear in the most famous concert halls of the world as a celebrated artist. David Helfgott only gives a few solo concerts every year, thus his appearance in Budapest in early May, when he will play works by Rachmaninoff and Liszt, is something truly special. Életképek 2010-bol XXIX. Magyar Sajtófotó Kiállítás

Real-life images from 2010 29th Hungarian Press Photo Exhibition A Magyar Újságírók Országos Szövetsége által meghirdetett Magyar Sajtófotó Pályázatra idén 323 szerzőtől összesen 8548 pillanatfelvétel érkezett, melyek közül a nemzetközi zsűri 13 kategóriába sorolva választotta ki a legjobbakat.

Az elmúlt év győztes sajtófotóit felvonultató tárlaton megrázó, megmosolyogtató és elgondolkoztató felvételek láthatók az árvíz és vörösiszap-katasztrófa sújtotta vidékek drámájáról, a Dalai Láma budapesti látogatásáról, a 2010-es úszó Európa Bajnokság férfi műugróinak és műúszó nőinek kitekert testéről vagy épp a Les Ballets Trocadero de Monte Carlo társulat szőrös mellkasú balerináiról, akik tavaly áprilisban a Művészetek Palotájában léptek fel először Magyarországon. Rácsodálkozhatunk a természet csodáira: ahogy utolsó útjára készíti fel az apró ékfoltos razbóra halat a jégmadár, vagy ahogy egy nyári zápor után a gallyakon buborékozó esőcseppekben visszatükröződik a világ. Egyszerre megrázó és gyönyörű, ahogy Huszti István Túlélők című nagydíjas fotóján macskáját menti egy asszony a vörösiszapból Kolontáron, vagy ahogy Lakatos Péter Zoltán Pokoli zuhanásán egy férfi önmagát felgyújtva zuhan a Szabadság híd egyik turulszobráról a Dunába. A kép a hazai versenyben hír-eseményfotó kategóriában a második helyen végzett, de azóta elnyerte a World Press Photo hírkép kategóriájának első díját is. Az André Kertész Nagydíjat – a legjobb emberközpontú dokumentarista fotográfiáért – a Szabad Föld fotósa, a nálunk, a Horizon magazinban is számtalan alkalommal képeivel „vendégszereplő” Kállai Márton nyerte, Fapados konditerem című fotósorozatával. A total of 8548 works by 323 photographers were entered for the 2010 Hungarian Press Photo Competition, organised by the National Federation of Hungarian Journalists. An international jury selected the winners in 13 categories.

The winning photos of last year include moving, humorous and thought-provoking shots of the dramatic flood and red-sludge disaster which hit provincial Hungary, the Dalai Lama’s visit to Budapest, the contorted bodies of male divers and female synchronised swimmers at the 2010 European Swimming Championship, and images of the hairy-chested ballerinas of Les Ballets Trocadero de Monte Carlo performing in Hungary for the first time in April at the Palace of Arts. We can stare in amazement at the wonders of nature – how the kingfisher takes the Harlequin Rasbora on its last journey, or how after a summer shower the world is reflected in a raindrop on a twig. István Huszti’s Grand Prize-winning composition ‘Survivors’, showing a woman rescuing a cat from the red sludge in Kolontár, is both upsetting and superb, as is ‘Infernal Fall’ taken by Péter Lakatos, which captures a man who has set himself alight plunging into the Danube from one of the Turul bird statues on Szabadság Bridge. The picture came second in the news event category, but since then it has won first prize in the news section of the World Press Photo competition. The André Kertész Grand Prize for the best human-interest documentary photo was won by Márton Kállai with his series ‘No Frills Gym’. Kállai works for the magazine Szabad Föld and his pictures also frequently appear in Horizon. The exhibition, which continues for more than a month, invites you to an adventure by recalling the past events of 2010.

Budapest Táncfesztivál Budapest Dance Festival

A Tánc Világnapját – az UNESCO Nemzetközi Tánctanácsának kezdeményezésére – 1983 óta a klasszikus balett óriásának tartott Jean-Georges Noverre születésnapján, április 29-én táncelőadásokkal ünneplik szerte a világon. Ez a táncművészet legnagyobb ünnepe, amelyhez kapcsolódóan a Nemzeti Táncszínház – új névvel – immár tizenegyedik alkalommal rendez fesztivált. A programban szereplő műfajok között akad balett, modern és kortárs tánc, néptánc produkció, nagyközönségnek szóló és kísérletezőbb hangvétel. A korábban Táncfórumként megrendezett fesztivál nemcsak nevében újul meg, színesebb programok és új helyszínek is jelzik a változást: a neves hazai együttesek előadásai mellett láthatóak lesznek például a New York Times által „lélegzetelállítóan látványos” jelzőkkel illetett Shen Wei Dance Arts előadásai, valamint ízelítőt kaphatunk a kortárs finn táncművészetből három társulat, a Karttunen Kollektív, a Tommi Kitti & Co és a Susanna Leinonen Company vendégszereplésének köszönhetően. A fesztivál ideje alatt a világhírű koreográfus, William Forsythe installációi népesítik be a Nemzeti Táncszínház Refektóriumának és a Magyar Nemzeti Galériának a tereit, valamint helyet kapott a programban egy szakmai konferencia is. A fesztivál záróeseménye a Tánc Világnapi gálaest, amelyen az évad legjobbjainak ítélt művészek vehetik át a Magyar Táncművészek Szövetségének szakmai díjait: az évad legjobb férfi és női táncosának, legjobb alkotójának, legjobb végzős növendékének járó elismerést, valamint az Életmű-díjat és a Táncművészetért-díjat.

Since 1983 World Dance Day, initiated by UNESCO’s International Dance Council, has been celebrated around the world with dance performances on 29 April, the birthday of the classical ballet master Jean-Georges Noverre. It is the largest celebration of dance and to mark the occasion the National Dance Theatre is organising a festival for the eleventh time. Genres represented will include ballet, modern and contemporary dance, and folk dance, aimed at the general public as well as those with a taste for the experimental. Formerly known as the Dance Forum, the festival not only has a new name but also a more varied programme and is taking place in new locations. In addition to performances by renowned Hungarian companies, there will be appearances by, for example, Shen Wei Dance Arts, described by The New York Times as “breathtakingly spectacular”, and a taste can be had of contemporary Finnish dance thanks to presentations by Karttunen Kollektív, Tommi Kitti & Co and the Susanna Leinonen Company. During the festival installations by the internationally renown choreographer William Forsythe will be on display at the National Dance Theatre and the National Gallery, and there will also be a specialist conference. The closing event will be a gala evening on World Dance Day when those judged the best artists of the season will receive awards of the Hungarian Dance Federation – for the best male and female dancers, the best choreographer and the best graduating student, in addition to the ‘Lifelong Achievement and ‘For Dance’ prizes. SoonYi, who at the time was still at secondary school, later became Woody’s wife and mother of two children. Allen comes out with a new film from time to time. As he says, he would be dead bored on his own and therefore he rather passes the time among actors and crew members. Midnight in Paris with Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams in the leading roles is making its debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Windsor wedding a dream come true Világraszóló esemény szem és fültanúi lehetnek mindazok, akik élőben, televíziós közvetítés vagy az internet jóvoltából követik nyomon korunk leghíresebb szerelmespárjának egybekelését. Vilmos herceg és Kate Middleton esküvője 2011. április 29-én, a Westminster apátságban óhatatlanul emlékeztet egy harminc évvel korábbi királyi nászra: Károly walesi herceg 1981. július 29-én vezette oltár elé Diana Spencert a Szent Pál-székesegyházban.

A két időpont között megannyi intrika, tragédia, gyűlölködés árnyékolta be a brit koronát; Shakespeare vélhetően újabb királydrámát írt volna a történésekből. Vilmos és Kate egyetemi románcból szövődő szerelme azonban inkább G. B. Shaw tollához illik. Műfaját tekintve romantikus vígjáték, akár a Pygmalion, amelyben egyébként Kate Middleton még középiskolás amatőr színjátszóként próbálgatta színésznői képességeit. Catherine Elizabeth Middleton életregénye sok hasonlatosságot mutat a Pygmalion Eliza Doolittle-jével. Ük-ükszülei még bányászok voltak, a család polgárosodása csak a XX. században kezdődött. An event of worldwide interest for the eyes and the ears of all those following the live TV or internet broadcasts will be the wedding of the most famous couple of our times. The marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton in Westminster Abbey on 29 April will inevitably bring to mind a previous royal wedding 30 years ago when Prince Charles led Diana Spencer to the altar of St Paul’s Cathedral on 29 July 1981.

Between the two dates much intrigue, tragedy and animosity has overshadowed the British monarchy such that Shakespeare could have written a drama based on the events. The life story of Catherine Elizabeth Middleton has many similarities to that of Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion. Kate’s father, Michael Francis Middleton, met his future wife, Carole Elizabeth Goldsmith, when he was working as a British Airways air traffic dispatcher. Her mother from being a flight attendant taught herself to be a businesswoman. Her successful company selling party supplies and decorations, Party Pieces, laid the foundations for the family’s wealth. Thanks to that, Kate graduated in art history at Scotland’s St. Andrew’s University, where she was in the same year as Prince William of Wales. Meanwhile the shy teenage brunette, distinguished in various sports and intellectual pursuits, turned into a purposeful woman who today is already spoken of as a fashion icon. With her hats decorated with ribbons, her tight jersey dresses and her tailored suits she has created a style. The Middleton look rivals the elegance of Michelle Obama. The

future Princess Catherine is a fan of polo, horseracing and hunting. She has two harmful passions – smoking and an addiction to shopping. It is the only city in the world which can boast of nine monuments on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. More than a million Cruise ship passangers visit its port annually and it hosts 100 international fairs every year. If Paris, the Louvre; if London, the National Gallery; if St. Petersburg, the Hermitage, while Rome brings the Vatican Museum to mind. Yet you cannot find a similar edifice acknowledged as the single, grandiose museum in this bustling, lively and vibrant Catalan coastal city, one of Europe’s most attractive Mediterranean metropolises – the masterpieces of Catalan, Spanish and international art are scattered across more than 50 museums and galleries.

A spanyol-katalán művészet csúcsai Barangolásunkat kezdjük a modern művészet kiemelkedő zsenijével, mindannyiunk Pablójával! A grandiózus gótikus székesegyháztól csupán néhány sarok a zegzugos Carrer de Montcada, amely a római időkben a város egyik fő ütőereként a már akkor zsúfolt kikötőt kötötte össze a birodalom központjával. A Picasso Múzeum itt terpeszkedik, nem kevesebb mint öt, szemet gyönyörködtető XIII–XIV. századi katalán-gótikus palotában, melyekben a korabeli Barcelona legvagyonosabb családjai élték „szerény” mindennapjaikat. A paloták belső udvaraiért, a lépcsőházak látványáért már megéri idejönni, akár Picassótól függetlenül is. A művész – Barcelonában divatot teremtve – maga ajándékozta a múzeumnak közel ezer festményét, megalapozva ezzel a ma 3 500 műalkotást felvonultató gyűjtemény világhírét. A múzeum rengeteg barátságos terme (ne felejtsük: egykori lakóházakban járunk) az év legalább 314 napján (hétfőnként zárva) számíthat a turisták rohamára. Az biztos, ez nem az a hely, ahol magányosan andaloghatunk. A tárlat Picasso szinte teljes oeuvre-jét felvonultatja, a vázlatoktól, tanulmányoktól a kék korszakon keresztül egészen a késői alkotásokig. A modern művészetet kedvelőknek kötelező! 38

Let’s start our journey with that outstanding genius of modern art who belongs to all of us, Pablo! The winding Carrer de Montcadais is just a few blocks away from the grandiose Gothic cathedral. In Roman times this was one of the main arteries, connecting the centre with the then already busy port. The Picasso Museum is situated here in no fewer than five magnificent 13th and 14th -century Catalan Gothic palaces, where Barcelona’s wealthiest families used to lead their ‘modest’ everyday lives. Apart from Picasso the palaces are worth visiting if only for their inner courtyards and magnificent staircases. Setting a trend in Barcelona, the artist himself gave the museum nearly 1000 of his paintings, establishing the international fame of the collection, which today comprises 3,500 works. The many friendly rooms in the museum (don’t forget it’s a former residence) attract a siege of visitors on at least 314 days of the year (it is closed on Mondays).

It’s certainly not the place where you can stroll in solitude. The exhibition covers almost Picasso’s entire oeuvre, from sketches and studies through the Blue Period to his late works. A must-see for modern art fans. A commonplace it may be, but it is impossible to write about Barcelona without mentioning Gaudi. Just to give one reason – nine buildings on the aforementioned UNESCO World Heritage list are not included as separate edifices but in a group as the maestro’s work. No one made a stronger impression on his beloved city than the puritan, eccentric genius. The Catalan artist spent most of his life here and we, his fans today, are grateful to him for that. There are not many districts where you cannot discover 39

a striking, internationally unique Gaudi masterpiece. His buildings represent both a part and a continuation of nature. Just as nature has no straight lines, his creations curve, revolve and make waves, the surfaces blending together. Of his designs you can view the interior of two residential buildings a couple of corners from one another on the nicely sounding Passeig de Gràcia Avenue, Barcelona’s Champ-Elysées. It’s worth walking along the avenue several times, even though it’s tiring. Here can be found the city’s most

elegant boutiques, tapas bars (our favourite a two-storey Basque outlet right at the start), perfumeries, exorbitantly expensive restaurants and cafés with terraces, which make it less tiring. This is also art, the art of everyday life, of knowing how to live. Walking from the direction of the centre along La Rambla, you encounter the Casa Batllo on the left. The building is a genuine art legend, a magic castle. One glance is enough to understand why it is called the ‘House of Bones’. To a central European mind today, it

is quite annoying to learn it was built for a local middle-class family between 1904 and 1906. In this case, as with all his work, Gaudi scrupulously designed all the details, including the furniture. The asymmetric roof is covered by ceramic tiles in a scale-like manner, thus the building resembles a giant reptile. Entering is like walking into a cool but not forbidding cave, with light filtering in only through small, upper windows. Strolling along Passeig de Gràcia

Casa Mila, the city’s and perhaps Spain’s most prominent residential building billows towards you from afar. With his designs the maestro made a habit of avoiding straight lines. A lot has been written about what may have inspired him when drawing up the plans for Casa Mila, or La Pedrera (The Quarry) as it is known. Most point to the waves of the oceans or the shape of nearby mountain ranges. While some visitors in the foyer are getting involved in 41

Hogy csak egy okot említsünk, a fent említett UNESCO világörökségi lista kilenc épülete nem külön-külön, hanem mint a Mester „munkássága”, egy csokorban jelenik meg. A puritán különc zseninél senki nem nyomta rá erőteljesebben kézjegyét szeretett városára. A katalán művész élete nagy részét itt töltötte, és ezt mi, mai rajongói hálatelt szívvel konstatáljuk. A városnak kevés olyan kerülete van, ahol ne botlanánk egy meghökkentő, a világ építészetében példa nélkül álló Gaudímesterműbe. Épületei a természet részét, folytatását jelentik. Ahogy a természetben nincsenek egyenes vonalak, az ő alkotásai is csavarodnak, keringenek, hullámoznak, a felületek egymásba folynak. Művei közül két lakóházba pillantunk be, melyek egymástól pár saroknyira, Barcelona Champ-Elysées-jén, a szép hangzású Passeig de Gràcia sugárúton állnak. Az út maga több lábkoptató sétát is megér: a város legelegánsabb butikjai, tapas bárok (kedvencünk mindjárt az elején egy kétszintes baszk egység) és parfümériák, méregdrága éttermek és kiülős kávéházak sora enyhíti. Ez is művészet, kérem, a mindennapok, az élni tudás művészete! A Belváros, például a La Rambla felől érkezve a bal oldalon a Casa Batllóra csodálkozunk rá. Az épület valódi művészeti legenda, elvarázsolt kastély. Elég egy pillantás, hogy megértsük, miért is hívják „Csontok házának”. Mai, közép-európai ésszel pedig egyenesen bosszantó, hogy 1904 és 1906 között egy középosztálybeli helyi család részére épült. Gaudí itt is, mint minden művében az összes részletet, még a bútorzatot is aprólékosan megtervezte. Az aszimmetrikus tetőszerkezetet kerámialapokkal pikkelyszerűen borította, így az egy óriási hüllőre hasonlít. Belépve, mintha egy hűvös (de nem rideg) barlangban járnánk, fény csak a fenti világítóablakokon szűrődik be. 42

Then stepping out to the roof the spectacle makes us again silent. Casa Mila is the opposite of everything you’ve thought to be traditional architecture. Knowing how Gaudi worked, it’s not surprising that he didn’t draw up any plans for the building apart from main sketches. To admire the paintings of another eccentric, Antoni Tàpies, in the Foundation Tàpies Centre, you still don’t have to leave the broadly interpreted city centre. Following Picasso’s example, Tàpies also set up a foundation bearing his name. The building itself is of interest – an unusual mixture of industrial design, iron and red brick. According to experts, it represents true Catalan Modernism. Suffice it to say that Gaudí’s worthy contemporaries designed it. In addition to housing the striking, Modernist, Symbolist and mystic works of Tàpies, the institution is a truly vibrating arts centre. Its temporary exhibitions are

noted across Europe, and its film festival, library and workshops for both schools and adults are internationally renowned. Taking a deep breath run, or maybe take the bus or cog rail from the centre up to Barcelona’s Gellért Hill, Montjuic. The 1992 summer Olympic Games were held here. Still, looking for art you should head not for the grandiose Olympic Stadium but in the other direction, towards the Museum of Juan Miró, the other famous Catalan painter. It’s a striking, snow-white building fully representing the Mediterranean lifestyle on the city side of the hill. You would not be surprised if I reveal that the artist himself founded the museum (this generous inclination to donate may eventually be consi dered a Catalan tradition). Miró donated 380 paintings and more than 5,000 drawings to the foundation. These days the collection comprises 1,100 works of art, but naturally you can only admire a small proportion. Of note is that from the fantastic roof terrace with its incredible view you can marvel at the city below.

Treasures for gourmands The one million seafaring boats coming into the city’s port has led to an obvious conclusion – Barcelona has long been inhabited by seafaring people who fish and consume the sea’s wealth, as well as transport consignments and soldiers. And, of course, build ships necessary for all that. The naval dockyard, today’s Maritime Museum, is situated on the port side of the city, a stone’s throw from a statue of Columbus standing unrealistically high. (Probably he can see America from up there). From its foundation in the 13th century this was the second largest shipyard in the Mediterranean after Venice. Following extension in the 17th century it could accommodate 30 galleys. The space was needed. After all, the city profited most from sea trade and wars, and it is wellknown that both those noble activities require many ships. Tervezésekor a mester sportot csinált abból, hogy ne legyenek egyenes vonalai. Könyvtárnyi teória van arra, vajon mi inspirálta a művészt a „La Pedrera”, vagyis „Kőbánya”-ként ismert épület elkészítésében. Legtöbben az óceán hullámaira vagy a közeli hegyvonulatok formájára tippelnek. Míg a látogatók egy része az előcsarnokban heves – mondhatni mediterrán – vitába bonyolódik ez ügyben, mi csendben megmásszuk az öt emeletet, közben hangosan álmélkodunk, majd kilépünk a tetőre, és a látvány miatt ismét elnémulunk. A kémények szürreális szoborerdőként döfnek az égbe, alattunk hullámzik a város. A Casa Milá mindennek az ellenkezője, amit szokványos építészetnek ismerünk. Gaudít ismerve nem meglepő, hogy mindehhez nem készített terveket, csupán vázlatokat skiccelt fel. Még mindig nem kell kilépnünk a tágan vett belvárosból, hogy egy másik különc, Antoni Tàpies festményeit csodálhassuk meg. Picassótól példát véve ő is maga hozta létre a nevét viselő alapítványt. Az épület önmagában is megér egy misét, az ipari design, a vas és a vörös tégla kellően különc ötvözete. Az értők azt mondják, igazi katalán modernizmus. Maradjunk annyiban, hogy Gaudí méltó kortársai tervezték. Az inztézmény Tàpies meghökkentő, modernista, szimbolista, misztikus művein kívül igazi vibráló művészeti központ. Időszaki kiállításait szerte Európában jegyzik, filmfesztiválja, könyvtára, iskolai és felnőtt workshopjai világhírűek. A Belvárosból egy mély levegővétellel fussunk (vagy buszozzunk, esetleg fogaskere kűzzünk) fel Barcelona Gellérthegyére, a Montjuic-ra. 44

ing boats, beautifully decorated prows and wooden submarines of bygone years fascinate visitors. The original-size copy of Don Juan de Austria’s flagship is the museum’s greatest sensation. The gentleman, the ‘knight of Christianity’, busied himself on the captain’s bridge of his wonderful ship as the military leader of the glorious naval battle of Lepanto against the Ottoman empire. Once you have duly admired all the fine and applied arts spanning all the ages, devote some time to the senses. Visit, for example, my favourite, the Chocolate Museum near the Ciutadella Park. About the park, suffice it to say that it is home to the Zoo and the Catalan Parliament. Words are inadequate to describe the ‘choc’ museum. It’s far easier to walk around and taste. And here’s a taster: dozens of sessions for making chocolate by hand are organised for young people between 13 and 18. Somehow it’s not surprising that the chocolate tasting events at weekends represent the most popular activity. The most interesting item features Don Quixote with his loyal horse, Rosinante, and his squire Sancho Panza in the company of a windmill, all made of chocolate and marzipan. Then there’s a most delicious sweet, a miracle called ‘macaron’, which began conquering the world from France and appeared in Hungary, too. After the mouth, pay tribute to your nose – head for the world’s largest perfume museum. The choice of location for the small exhibition is perfect. It can be found on the previously highly praised Passeig de Gràcia Avenue. The nearly half-century-old display presents the history of perfume from Pharaonic Egypt to the present day. You can also peep into the secrets of perfume making. People favouring industrial stories can satisfy their curiosity just like we, simple

hedonists. The exhibition is for everyone, today’s mass produced products can be found, as can the exquisite varieties. For ball jugglers … It’s enough to say Nou Camp to 98% of the world’s male inhabitants. I would recommend that this majority as well as anyone unfamiliar with the name visit the place, namely one of the world’s most famous football stadiums, the home of ‘Barca’, the legendary club founded in 1899. The beautiful turf has hosted many Spanish championship finals and Champion League matches, as well as the decisive contests of the 1982 World Cup. It won UEFA’s qualification of a ‘five-star stadium’ in 1999. At its opening in 1957 it could seat only 90,000 fans; however, it was extended in a hurry to accommodate 115,000 seats before the World Cup. As can be witnessed, it is filled to the brim on dozens of occasions each year. Guided tours lead you to the boxes, dressing rooms and press centre. Hungarians can be proud of the fact that near the stadium there is only one statue of a football player, but it depicts a Hungarian, László Kubala, who the fans voted the greatest figure in the team’s history. … and for those with a macabre taste Finally there is a real gem for those with a sense of vocation – the Funeral Hearse Museum. The exhibition presenting the history of mankind from a unique angle displays highly decorated, historic horsedrawn carriages, as well as spectacular 19th and 20 th -century black (and white!) hearses. Itt rendezték meg az 1992-es nyári olimpiát. Művészetek iránt nyitott tekintetünket jelen esetben mégsem a grandiózus Olimpiai Stadionra, hanem a másik irányba vetjük. A domb város felőli oldalán ugyanis a meghökkentő, hófehér, csupa mediterrán-életérzés épület a másik híres katalán festő, Juan Miró múzeuma. Ugye nem lepődik meg a kedves olvasó, ha elárulom: az intézményt maga a művész hozta létre (e bő adakozókedvet lassan vegyük katalán népszokásnak). 1975-ben ugyanis 380 festményt és több mint 5000 rajzott adományozott az alapítványnak. A gyűjtemény napjainkban 1100 műalkotásból áll, amelynek természetesen csak kis hányadát csodálhatjuk meg. És nem mellékesen magát a várost, amely a fantasztikus tetőterasz előtt kínálja magát hivalkodóan. Ne sajnáljuk rá az időt! Kincsek ínyenceknek… A bevezetőben említett itt megforduló évi egymillió utast vizionálva könnyen adódik a következtetés: a várost tengerjáró népek lakják, akik halásszák és eszik annak gyümölcseit, fuvarozzák a rakományt és a katonákat. És természetesen készítik a mindehhez használatos hajókat. A város kikötő felőli részén, egy kőhajításra a derék Kolombusz irreálisan magasan álló szobrától (onnan fentről valószínűleg ellátni Amerikáig) terül el a volt arzenál, vagyis hajóépítő dokk, a mai Tengerészeti Múzeum. XIII. századi alapításától kezdve a velencei után a Földközi-tenger medencéjének második legnagyobb hajóépítő műhelyének adott otthont. A XVII. századi bővítés után egyszerre 30 gálya fért el itt. Szükség is volt a helyre, hiszen a város évezredeken át a tengeri kereskedelemből és háborúkból profitált a legtöbbet, és mint tudjuk, mindkét ne-

mes tevékenység rengeteg hajót kíván. A különös atmoszférájú, ipari hangulatú, civil gótikus épületben mindent megtudhatunk a hajózásról. Híres vitorlások modelljei, gyönyörűen díszített hajóorr szobrok, korabeli fa tengeralattjárók bűvölnek el minket. A legnagyobb szenzáció Don Juan de Austria vezérhajójának eredeti méretű másolata. Említett úr a „kereszténység lovagjaként” a török elleni dicsőséges lepantói tengeri ütközet hadvezéreként serénykedett csodálatos hajója kapitányi hídján. Miután kellőképpen megcsodáltuk az összes korok majd’ mind szép- és alkalmazott művészetét, adjunk egy csöppet az érzékeknek is! Látogassuk meg például kedvencemet, a Csokoládémúzeumot, amely a Citadella park szomszédságában található. A parkról csak annyit, hogy itt található az Állatkert és a Katalán Parlament is. A csokimúzeumról nehéz írni, annál könyebb végigjárni és végigkóstolni. Ízelítőül: kézművescsoki-készítő foglalkozások tucatjait szervezik a 3–18 éves korosztály számára. Valahogy nem lepődünk meg, hogy a legnépszerűbb program a hétvégenkénti csokoládékóstolás. A legérdekesebb kiállítási tárgy a csokiból és marcipánból alkotott Don Quijote, oldalán hű lova, Rosinante, valamint fegyverhordója, Sancho Panza egy szélmalom társaságban. A legfinomabb édesség pedig a Franciaországból indult, világhírt bejárt, a közelmúltban már itthon is felbukkanó macaron nevű csoda. Kóstolják meg! A száj után ne hagyjuk érintetlenül orrunkat sem: irány a világ legnagyobb parfümmúzeuma. A kis tárlat helyválasztása tökéletes: a fent már magasztalt Passeig de Gràcia sugárúton található. A közel fél évszázados kiállítás végigvezet minket a parfüm történetén a fáraók Egyiptomától napjainkig. Bepillantást nyerünk a parfümké-

szítés titkaiba is. Az ipari történeteket szerető népek épp úgy kielégítik itt kiváncsiságukat, mint mi, egyszerű hedonisták. A kiállítás mindenkié, a mai tömegtermékek ugyanúgy megtalálhatók itt, mint a niche-variációk. …labdazsonglőröknek… A világ felnőtt férfilakossága 98 százalékának elég annyit mondani: Nou Camp. Akinek ez nem mond semmit, valamint az előbb említett többségnek egyaránt ajánljuk, hogy látogasson el ide. Ugyanis a világ egyik leghíresebb focistadionjáról, az 1899-ben alapított legendás klub, a „Barca” házatájáról van szó. A gyönyörű dühöngő rengeteg spanyol bajnoki és Bajnokok Ligája meccsnek, sőt az 1982-es VB barcelonai rangadóinak is otthont adott. 1999ben elnyerte az UEFA „Ötcsillagos Stadion” minősítését. 1957-es megnyitóján még csupán 90 000 szurkoló fért el benne, a VB előtt azonban sietve 115 000 férőhelyesre bővítették. És tudjuk, látjuk: évente több tucatszor megtelik. A vezetett túrák során a páholyokba, öltözőkbe, sajtóközpontba is bepillanthatunk. Töltsön el minket büszkeséggel, hogy a stadion közelében egyetlen focista szobra áll, a magyar Kubala Lászlóé, akit a szurkolók a csapat történetének legnagyobb alakjának választottak. …és morbidoknak A végén egy igazi gyöngyszem, elhivatottaknak: a Temetési Kocsik Múzeuma. Az emberiség történetét egyedi aspektusból bemutató kiállítás cirádás lóvontatta történelmi kocsikat épp úgy felvonultat, mint a XIX-XX. század fekete (és fehér!) autócsodáit. Another world

The SEK Budapest International School Passing through the gateway at 131 Hűvösvölgyi Road you enter a different world. The beautifully renovated neo-Classical, one-storey school building stretches a long way into the garden with its abundance of greenery. A new wing of the school is an early modern split-level section, designed by the top Hungarian architect Gábor Zoboki. The corridors, rooms, superb gymnasium and particularly the lively children (aged 3 to 18) and the teachers represent the entire world in the environs of the Buda Hills. Here spirits socialised in the Hungarian education system can rest and relax. Pupils attend school in uniform recalling Roxfort. It is reserved, attractive and compulsory. “SEK Budapest Pre-School, Primary and Secondary School is part of a school network founded in Madrid in 1892 (almost 120 years ago!). In the most important private education network of Europe, America and Africa 16 primary and secondary schools as well as three universities have operated in 11 countries for decades. The school in Budapest was founded in 1997.” The basics are thus introduced by the Principal Gabriella Gidró, who also teaches in the school. “It’s no wonder that you feel the whole world when entering the school, since according to our philosophy the fundamental principle is to fully develop the abilities of the pupils as individuals. SEK educates for freedom. As much emphasis is laid on solidarity as sociability. In our school cooperation and not rivalry is the basic principle. The uniform also reflects that. Internal values and not appearances should be the hallmark of the pupils.” Teaching is based on the Hungarian national curri culum, while both Hungarian and English are employed as teaching languages. From pre-school on, pupils can learn three languages – Hungarian, English and Spanish. Foreign languages are taught by native speakers. It is not surprising that when the children are asked how many languages they can speak apart from the above three they take it for granted, listing, for example, French, Italian, Arabic, Russian and Japanese. More than half the pupils are Hungarian, the rest are children of foreign business people, diplomats or mixed marriages.

“Being child-centred is not an empty slogan in our school. The tutorial system represents one of its pillars. A tutor is more than a form teacher. He or she is the one who is in constant contact with the pupils and in regular touch with the parents. Communication is two-way: parents can ask to meet the tutor whenever they feel they need information, have a problem or a proposal. It has to be admitted, that is not an everyday practice in the Hungarian education system. Apart from an educational psychologist, there are special education teachers and speech therapists. “Children attending SEK are open to the world. Besides the languages and the philosophy of the school it is the extensive international relations that make this possible. From year 7 pupils can continue their studies in a foreign school for as long as three months. They stay with families, thus gaining an understanding of everyday life. Most importantly, due to the shared philosophy and speaking the foreign language almost at a native level by then, they arrive in a familiar environment. There is no need to explain what advantages these few months have in language learning, community building, an approach to the world and independence, not to mention experiences. After returning, they can easily continue where they left off. A summer camp in England where many can participate is also very popular among pupils. “In Hungarian schools parents become logistics managers in the afternoon. After lunch children are off to private lessons, training or music, fitness or folk dance lessons. SEK is unique in this regard, too. It offers all these sessions for pupils ‘in house’. Our after-school activities range from piano, guitar and flute lessons to craft sessions, from karate and acrobatic dance to football and roller skating, ballet and drama. There are also various language lessons and extra classes in natural sciences.” Of note is that they also hold language courses for parents. “Like three other institutions in Hungary, the school offers preparation for the International Baccalaureate. Pupils have to decide after year 10 whether to choose that. Those who opt for it study all subjects in English in years 11 and 12. In return, after a successful examination they get a diploma which is accepted as an entrance examination for most universities in the world. Thus SEK means a real entry to the world.” Gabriella Gidró is most proud of that.

A ház nem otthon kutya nélkül A house is not a home without a dog A mindig csodát ígérő tavasz a kutyások világában is várva várt szezon: nemcsak újra lehet erdőt, mezőt járni, nagyokat kirándulni, hanem az új jövevények, a négylábú, szőrős gyerekek világra jöttének is ez az egyik legforgalmasabb ideje. Spring, always promising a thousand wonders, is a season eagerly awaited by dog owners – not only can you take long walks in the woods and meadows, but it is one of the busiest times for new puppies, four-legged hairy kids coming into the world. Mutasd a kutyád – megmondom, ki vagy. Akár ilyen közmondás is létezhetne, hiszen a választott kutyafajta legalább annyira jellemző gazdájára, mint a tárgyai, amelyek körülveszik. A világon jelenleg mintegy 400 kutyafajta él, nem beszélve persze a belőlük származó – elszármazó – korcsikákról, akik, ha ugyan nem őrzik feltétlenül az ősök génjeit, de kedvességben, hűségben, élni akarásban akár még felül is múlhatják az egyenes vérvonallal rendelkező fajtatiszta társaikat. Show me your dog and I know who you are. There might as well be such a saying, since the chosen breed characterises owners as much as their personal possessions. Today there are some 400 breeds in the world, not to mention the crossbreeds which may not preserve the genes of their predecessors but can surpass their pedigree companions in kindness, loyalty and enthusiasm for life. The great thing about dogs is that everyone can find a suitable pet. If you’d like a small canine with long hair who is cheerful and loves to play, you can find one. Or maybe a large, calm dog with short hair? It exists. Whether a guard or a sheepdog, a fast runner or one who loves water, you’ll find one. Four hundred breeds provide a huge choice. Hungarians have contributed to the 400 with precisely nine breeds – the Hungarian Vizsla (short or wire-haired), Transylvanian Hound, Hungarian Greyhound, Kuvasz, Komondor, Puli, Pumi and the Mudi. Drótszőrű magyar vizsla A fajtát a rövidszőrű magyar vizsla és a drótszőrű német vizsla keresztezéséből hozták létre. A cél az volt, hogy a drótszőrű magyar vizsla őrizze meg a magyar vizsla küllemét és tulajdonságait, csak a szőrtípus változzon. A drótszőrű magyar vizsla mindenes vadászkutya, ami azt jelenti, hogy egyaránt kitűnően alkalmazható az apróvad felkutatására, majd a lőtt apróvad megkeresésére és elhozására. Mind mezőn, mind vízen és erdőben is kitűnően dolgozik. Szőrének köszönhetően igen ellenálló az időjárás viszontagságaival szemben, egyaránt tartható lakásban vagy kertben. Rendkívül magas intelligenciája és tanulékonysága révén kön�nyen kezelhető vadászkutya, és kellemes „családtag”. Wire-haired Hungarian Vizsla This breed has been created by the crossing of a short or smoothhaired Hungarian Vizsla and a German wire-haired Pointer with the aim of preserving the appearance and features of the Hungarian Vizsla but with a different coat. The wire-haired Hungarian Vizsla is a general shooting dog, meaning it can search for small game, and then find and fetch it when shot. It is an excellent gun dog in field, water and woods. Due to the coat he is very resilient to the inclemency of the weather and can be kept inside or in a garden. It is a highly intelligent dog easily trained and therefore can be well handled as a shooting dog as well as being a pleasant family member. Erdélyi kopó A nyelvtudomány szerint a „kopó” szavunk jelentése elkapó, megragadó, megfogó. Az erdélyi kopó a magyar királyi és az erdélyi fejedelmi udvar nélkülözhetetlen, jól megszokott lakója volt. Legtöbb-

ször maga az uralkodó kedvencei, nagy becsben tartott testőrei, kitartó társai a sokszor 10-12 napig tartó vadászatokon. Az időszámításunk előtti III. században, az akkori Pannónia területére beáramló kelták kezdték tenyészteni, amit aztán a Római birodalom bukása után a Kárpát-medencében vadászkutyáikkal együtt érkező hun, avar és magyar törzsek kereszteződés útján folytattak.

Transylvanian Hound According to linguists, this breed’s Hungarian name, kopó, had the meaning of snatching, seizing and taking hold of. The Transylvanian Hound was an indispensable, usual member of the Hungarian royal and Transylvanian princely courts. They mostly were pets of the monarch himself, highly esteemed guards and persevering companions on hunts often lasting 10-12 days. In the 3rd century B.C. Celts massed the territory of the then Pannonia began breeding it and then, after the Roman Empire fell, the Huns, Avars and Hungarian tribes arriving in the Carpathian Basin together with their gun dogs continued with crossing. Magyar agár Elsőként is szögezzük le: van a kutya és van az agár. Ezt az alapvetést mindkét tábor jóváhagyólag elismeri: az agarasok arisztokratikus elkülönüléssel, a kutyások pedig egy csöpp mosolyt elnyomva a szájuk szegletében szemlélik „amazok” négylábúit. Bár talán helyesebb lenne úgy fogalmazni, hogy jó esetben az arisztokraták majdnem olyanok, mint az agarak… Az agarakat „látó kutyáknak” nevezik, elsősorban szemmel keresik a vadat és nem az orrukkal. A magyar agár története a honfoglalás korára vezethető vissza, ám kön�nyen és jól alkalmazkodtak a mai modern világhoz is. Elegáns díszei a lakásnak, ugyanakkor az új munkahelyükön, az agárpályán szenvedélyesen űzik a műnyulat. Hungarian Greyhound Firstly let’s note: there is a dog and there is a Greyhound. Both camps fully agree – Greyhound owners look on the canines of ‘those’ with aristocratic aloofness, while dog owners gaze at greyhounds

Greyhounds have always been distinguished, so no wonder they cost a fortune. Their appearance reflects ele gance and a distance from others – they are like aristocrats, though it would perhaps be more correct to say that aristocrats are, at most, nearly like Greyhounds. They are often referred to as ‘sight dogs’ since they search for game by sight not smell. The history of the Hungarian Greyhound goes back to the time of the Hungarian Conquest, but the breed has easily adapted well to the modern world. They represent elegant additions to a home while at the same time passionately chase the lure, an artificial rabbit at their new place of work, the greyhound racing track. Kuvasz A kuvasz név török eredetű, magyarul őrszemet jelent. A nyájat, a ménest és a gulyát folyamatosan védelmezni kellett a ragadozók és a tolvajok ellen. A pásztor csak a maga és kutyája erejére, bátorságára számíthatott a farkas vagy a zsiványok támadásakor. Ezek az élethalálharcok vésték a kuvaszős

eszébe az idegenekkel szembeni tartózkodó magatartást. Ugyanakkor gazdájához és annak családjához a végletekig ragaszkodó, kedves kutya. A kuvasz felépítése erőt sugároz, ugyanakkor soha nem nehézkes vagy lomha. Megjelenése mérete miatt impozáns. Legszebb a feje. Sötétbarna szeme élénkséget, kedvességet, támadás esetén kérlelhetetlenséget sugároz. Mozgása könnyed. Akár harminc kilométert is megtesz ügetésben. A pásztorok melletti élet önálló munkavégzést igényelt. Ezért önfejűnek tartják, ám a szeretett gazda kedvéért bármire képes. Kikötve, bezárva és elszigetelve nem önmaga, az ilyenfajta tartásmódot nem érdemli meg ez a nagyszerű kutya. Kuvasz The word kuvasz is of Turkish origin and means a guard. Sheep, horses and cattle had to be continuously protected against beasts of prey and thieves. Attacked by wolves or bandits, the herdsman could rely on his dog’s strength and courage, not just his own. Those life and death fights implanted in the kuvasz predecessors’ mind a reserved behaviour towards strangers. Yet, it is a kind dog who is extremely loyal to his owner and family. The Kuvasz’s build radiates strength, but it is never clumsy or sluggish. His appearance is imposing due to his size. The head is truly beautiful. The dark brown eyes glow with liveliness, kindness and relentlessness in the case of attack. He moves about lightly and can gallop even 30 kilometres. Life with the herdsmen required the Kuvasz to work independently. Therefore he is regarded as strongwilled, yet capable of anything for his beloved owner. If tied up, shut away or isolated he is beyond himself and this magnificent dog does not deserve that kind of treatment.

His huge body, strength and courage made him able to take on a fight with humans, wolves and bears. The undemanding and tough Komondor, protected by his long dense coat, coped well with extreme weather conditions. He is unfalteringly courageous when

guarding a house. He attacks daringly without barking. He regards the territory he guards as his own and does not allow strangers in. As a puppy he is kind

and playful, and is also reliable and predictable. Therefore, he can well adapt to the everyday life of a family living in a house with a garden. Puli Valószínűleg vándorló, pásztorkodással foglalkozó őseinkkel együtt érkezett a Kárpát-medence területére. Nevének jelentése: „támadva terelő”. A puli évezredes fennmaradását a kíméletlen pusztai életmódnak köszönhette. Aki először vesz szemügyre egy pulit, egy kecsesen aprózó léptű, közepes testű kutyát láthat, amelynek dús, fürtös bundájából csak bájos fekete orrtükre mutatja, melyik az eleje. A sűrű fejszőr alól sötéten ragyogó szemek fürkészik a világot. A puli családtag, a gyerekekhez kedvesen, játékosan közeledik. Remek házőrző, mindent jelez. Ékessége a sajátos, földig

érő szőrzete. A kifejlett puli szőrét sosem keféljük és nem fésüljük. Tudnunk kell, a puli nem vedlik. A leggyakoribb a fekete szín, de egyre jobban terjed a fehér változata is. A puli világszerte talán a legismertebb magyar terelő pásztorkutya: nemzeti jelképünk. Puli The Puli probably came to the Carpathian Basin with the wondering Hungarian herdsmen tribes. The name means ‘an attacking drover’. His thousandyear survival was due to the harsh way of life on the puszta. When you first see a Puli you can only see a medium-sized, short-striding, nimble dog whose charming black nose in its dense hair of tight cords is the only indication of the front. at the world. The Puli is a family member who is kind and playful with children. He is a splendid guard dog who signals all the time. The Puli’s coat reaching the ground is unique. A mature Puli must never be combed and brushed. You must also know that the Puli does not shed hair. The coat colour is most frequently black, although the white variety is increasingly popular. The Puli is perhaps the best known Hungarian sheepdog in the world – a national symbol of Hungary. Pumi A XVII–XVIII. században a francia eredetű, terrier jellegű kutyafajták a pulival kereszteződtek. Így jött létre ez a közepesnél kisebb, 40–45 cm magas, a fehér, a fekete, a fakó és a szürke minden színváltozatában pompázó, a pulinál rövidebb szőrköntöst viselő, bohókás, bicsakló pomponfülű eb. A puli utolérhetetlen intelligenciájából egy jó adag ötvöződött benne a terrierek nyughatatlan, izgő-mozgó természetével. E mixelés szinte párját ritkító „koktélt" eredményezett: a magyar pásztorterriert. A pumi számára a terelés az igazi hivatás. A hétköznapi életben inkább kertes házba javasolható, nagyfokú a mozgásigénye. Rendkívül éber, elsőrangú jelző, házőrző. Figyelmét semmi el nem kerülheti. Hatalmas ésszel megáldott vérbeli bohóc, ellenállhatatlan késztetést érez, hogy mindig a középpontban legyen. 52

Pumi Terrier breeds of French origin were crossed with the Puli in the 17th and 18th centuries. Thus was born this smaller than medium sized, 40-45 cm high dog in white, black, pale black and grey. His coat is shorter than the Puli’s, with the tip of the ears bending down. A fair portion of the Puli’s unmatched intelligence mixed with a terrier’s restless, whimsical nature can be found in the Pumi. The cross-breeding resulted in a unique cocktail – the Hungarian herding terrier. Driving and herding is the Pumi’s true calling. In everyday life he is recommended for a house with a garden, due to his high demand for movement. He is extremely alert, a first-class signalling house guard. Nothing avoids his attention. He is a genuine clown with enormous intelligence who irresistibly wants to be the centre of attention.

Mudi This is the youngest Hungarian breed. In the first half of the 20th century herding dogs with upright ears, wavy or curly coat but short and smooth haired on the muzzle and the front of the legs were discovered by shepherds and herdsmen all over Hungary. This breed became the Mudi. He is medium sized with a body length and height at the withers being more or less identical. His hair does not mat, is practically self-cleansing and requires grooming only when shedding. They most frequently come in black, but there are some other colour varieties. The Mudi has preserved its excellent herding instinct, but enthusiasts of agility, frisbee, obedience, flyball and dog dancing won’t be disappointed either. The Mudi is extremely loyal to his owner and is an alert house guard who is reserved with strangers in the beginning. The breed is for those who can devote enough time to their pet.

face of the water The first and decisive recognition for the enterprise, which is based on Hungary’s Great Plain, came in Paris in 2004 where at the Aqua Expo, organised in conjunction with an international mineral water industry congress, Szentkirályi was recognised as the best water in the ‘still’ category from among 150 products of 110 companies.

– Tulajdonképpen az ismeretlenségből törtek egyik pillanatról a másikra az élvonalba – jegyzem meg beszélgetésünk elején Balogh Leventének, a Szentkirályi Ásványvíz Kft. tulajdonos-ügyvezetőjének. – Mondhatjuk így is, bár nekünk nem az legfőbb célunk, hogy különböző versenyeken győzedelmeskedjünk. Az viszont kétségtelen, a párizsi „antré” óriási nemzetközi figyelmet jelentett számunkra, s arra is lehetőséget adott, hogy az emberek szemléletében megjelenjen, ásványvíz és ásványvíz között van különbség, illetve, hogy milyen is a tudatos vízfogyasztás. Erre építettük fel marketingtevékenységünket is.

To begin our discussion, I put a suggestion to Levente Balogh, owner and managing director of Szentkirályi Mineral Water. In effect, from one moment to the next you jumped from obscurity to being at the forefront. You can say that – though it has never been our main aim to be successful in different competitions. On the other hand, the ‘entrée’ in Paris undoubtedly brought us to international attention and helped to implant in people’s minds that there are differences between mineral waters and what conscious water consumption means. That’s what we have based our marketing on.

– Más volt ez a megszokottól? – Korábban jóformán csak a multinacionális cégek forgalmaztak Magyarországon ásványvizet, ők egyfajta életérzést sugalltak a termékeikkel. Ez üdítőnél vagy az alkoholnál ez teljesen rendjén is van, de az egészséges vízfogyasztás esetében nem járható út. Más irányból közelítettünk: rájöttem, hogy a kiváló minőség nem extra, hanem alapvető követelmény. – Mitől válik egy élelmiszeripari-termék világmárkává? – Erre akkor van a legnagyobb esély, ha minél több országban lehet kapni. Persze ettől még nem feltétlenül válik piacvezetővé. Példaként említhetném a pármai sonkát, ami nálunk is kapható, ennek ellenére a magyar sonkákból lényegesen többet adnak el. Amelyik termék sok ország piacán jelen van, az nemzetközileg ismert és elismert branddé nőheti ki magát. S ha elégedettek vele a fogyasztók, azzal az adott nemzet jó híre is erősödik. Was that a departure from the norm? Earlier it was virtually only multinational companies which sold mineral water in Hungary. They promoted a sort of lifestyle with their products. That’s absolutely OK with soft drinks or alcohol, but with regard to healthy water consumption it’s not the way. We approached matters from a different angle. It struck me that outstanding quality is not an extra but a basic requirement. What makes a food product or a drink become something in demand everywhere in the world? For this the major factor is that it should be available in as many countries as possible. Of course, this is still not sufficient to become a market leader. Take Parma Ham, for example. It is available here, yet much more Hungarian ham is sold. A product which is available in many count ries’ markets, can become an internationally known and acknowledged brand. And if consumers are satisfied with it, it makes a country’s reputation grow. I know of mineral water which sells as much in one year as we do in a single summer day with Szentkirályi, but since it’s present in 150 countries it has a significant turnover. How are you expanding? We sell our products mainly with the cooperation of distri butors, while simultaneously looking for new partners. Currently we are present in ten countries. We recently signed a contract with Saudi Arabia, and our mineral water can be obtained, for example, in Bahrain, Canada, Australia and even in ten or fifteen restaurants in Los Angeles. Japan is also interested, but the regulations of the food industry there are so strict that we are required to provide 15 international licences based on analytical tests. It’s difficult to believe that there can be a mineral water which can be bottled in its natural condition, without needing any additives. If you wanted, how could you make Szentkirályi available in, say, Dubai? What would be the first step? I’d send out some colleagues to chart the territory and

Japán is érdeklődik irántunk, de annyira szigorúak az ottani élelmiszer-ipari előírások, hogy tizenöt nemzetközi bevizsgálási engedélyt kérnek tőlünk. Nehezen hiszik el, hogy létezik olyan ásványvíz, ami természetes formájában palackozható, semmilyen beavatkozást nem igényel. – Ha azt szeretné, hogy például Dubaiban kapható legyen a Szentkirályi, mi az első lépése ez ügyben? – Kiküldöm a munkatársaimat, hogy térképezzék fel a terepet, és építsenek fel egy marketinget, amivel sikeresek lehetünk. Hozzáteszem: a világ nagyvárosaiból hazahozott nemzetközi díjaink azért biztató alapot jelentenek a tárgyalásokhoz. Amint az is, hogy alapanyagunk és a technológiánk is világszínvonalú. Ezekkel az adottságokkal kezdettől fogva csak a marketingre helyezhettem a hangsúlyt, és amikor már stabil volt a piaci részesedésünk, akkor jöhettek a nagyobb beruházások. Cégünk 2004 és 2011 között hárommilliárd forintot költött fejlesztésekre, és ugyanennyit marketingre. – Mit szeretne még elérni? – Legnagyobb álmom, hogy a Szentkirályi Ásványvíz multinacionális céggé nője ki magát. Hogy minél több országba eljussunk, felgyorsítottuk a tárgyalásainkat az öreg kontinensen is. Ötletekben sincs hiány: most a fiatalok felé fordultunk, keressük a „víz arcát”. Másfél hónap alatt több mint ezren jelentkeztek – rájuk törzsvásárlóként is számítunk, különféle kedvezményekre feljogosító klubkártyát küldünk nekik. Szóval mindig kitalálunk valamit. Borzák Tibor

Nagy meglepetést okoztak, mi több, maguk is meglepődtek a váratlan győzelmen.

develop a marketing plan which would point to success. I should add that the awards we have gained in major cities of the world represent a secure basis in negotiations, just like our raw material as well as the world-class standard of our technology. Starting from these fundamentals I’ve stressed only the marketing at first and when we’ve established a stable market share large investments have followed. Between 2004 and 2011 our company invested three billion forints in development and the same amount in marketing. What else would you like to achieve? My biggest dream is that Szentkirályi Mineral Water would grow into a multinational company. To reach as many countries as possible we have speeded up our negotiations in Europe. There’s no shortage of ideas – we’ve recently turned towards young people in our search for ‘The Face of Water’. Within one and a half months more than 1000 people submitted applications. We can regard them as regular customers and we send them club cards which entitle them to a variety of discounts. In short, we are always coming up with something. Tibor Borzák

utazás | travel A Sziklakórház A Várfal tövében, közvetlenül a Szentháromság tér és a Tóth Árpád sétány alatt, a várhegy mélyén, mégsem a budai Vár barlangrendszerének részeként, egy nagyjából 10 km hosszúságú barlang- és pincerendszer kanyarog. A II. világháború előestéjén a járatokat megerősítették, a lejáratok számát korlátozták, a sokszor különálló járatszakaszokat pedig egybenyitották. Mindezt azért, hogy a 10–15 m mélységű járatrendszer óvóhelyként szolgálhasson az esetleges bombázások során. Mivel azonban az I. kerület és a vár volt akkoriban a „kormányzati negyed”, légoltalmi és egészségügyi megfontolásból a Székesfőváros akkori polgármestere elrendelte egy sebészeti szükségkórház – más néven „Légókórház” – építését is a vár alatt. A Sziklakórház végül 1944. februárjában nyílt meg, mint a Székesfőváros Sebészeti Szükségkórháza, melynek három nagy és egy kis kórterme, valamint korszerű műtője volt. Igazán intenzíven csak a ’44. májusi amerikai légitámadások idején állt üzembe: feladata az általános sürgősségi ellátás lett, így a légitámadásokban megsérült polgári és katonai személyeket egyaránt fogadott. A kórház műszakilag és orvostechnikailag is korszerűnek számított, gyenge pontja egyedül a melegítőkonyha volt, amely a város bekerítése után azonnal kicsinek bizonyult. Mindössze háromszáz ember befogadására tervezték, ám Budapest ostroma alatt teljesen megtelt sebesülttel, szemtanúk beszámolói szerint 650–700 embert is bezsúfoltak a nem túl nagy terekbe. Budapest Walking through the elegantly winding, evocative little streets of Buda’s Castle Hill, admiring the view while wondering from the old Water Town district towards the Danube or drifting in the bustle at Deák Ferenc Square in the city centre, who would think of visiting a hospital, an iron-foundry or seek out a tourist attraction about the underground’s history? Yet with these you can learn about a face of the Hungarian capital which, although shaped of steel, iron and rock, is as special as the city’s classical descriptions included in tourist guides.

Hospital in the rock An approximately 10 km long cave and cellar system winds through the depth of Castle Hill, directly under Holy Trinity Square and Tóth Árpád Promenade at the foot of the Castle wall, but it is not part of the cave network of the hill itself. On the eve of World War II the galleries were fortified, the number of entrances was limited and many separate sections were joined. This was done in order that the 10-15 metre deep system could serve as a shelter during air raids. At the time Budapest’s 1st district and the Castle area constituted the ‘government quarter’, so with civil defence and health considerations in mind the city’s mayor ordered an emergency surgical hospital – in other words a shelter hospital – to be established underneath Castle Hill. The Municipal Emergency Surgical Hospital, or ‘hospital in the rock’, eventually opened in February 1944. It had three large and one small sick-ward and an upto-date operating theatre and was intensively used primarily during the American air-raids in May 1944. Its mission was defined as general emergency care, thus it accepted both civilians and military personnel injured during air-raids. The hospital was modern, both technically and medically, with its weak point being the cater-

ing facilities which proved inadequate immediately after the encirclement of the city. It was designed for only 300 people, yet during the siege of Budapest the wounded completely filled it. Witness accounts talk of 650–700 people crowded in the rather small interior. Those who couldn’t be accommodated in the hospital were sheltered in the cave halls on wooden beds, stretchers and bags of straw. The hospital was closed in June 1945 and some doctors fled to the West. A section of undeveloped cave, separated for Germans together with the German soldiers lying there, fell victim to Russian flamethrowers. Between 1946 and 1952 the place operated as a pharmaceutical production plant where anti-typhoid vaccination was manufactured. It became a hospital for revolutionaries in 1956, while from 1958 to 1962 during the Cold War it was converted into a nuclear shelter. Doctors and nurses seconded to the institution underwent civil defence practice in the hospital until the middle of the 1980s – each rehearsing his or her role in the case of a conflict. The old caretaker’s apartment was occupied until 2004. Mr Mohácsi aired the place daily and maintained the electric and mechanical systems, while his wife cleaned, disinfected and changed the bedding once a fortnight. 59

utazás | travel faágyakra, hordágyakra és szalmazsákokra fektetve. 1945 júniusában a kórházat bezárták, az orvosok egy része nyugatra menekült, a németeknek elkülönített, de nem kiépített barlangrész pedig az ott fekvő német katonákkal együtt az oroszok lángszórójának áldozatául esett. 1946–52 között gyógyszertermelő üzemként működött, ahol tífusz elleni védőoltást készítettek, 1956-ban forradalmi kórházzá avanzsált, 1958–62 között, a hidegháborús időkben pedig atombunkerré építtették át. A létesítménybe vezényelt orvosok és ápolók a ’80-as évek közepéig tartottak évente polgári védelmi gyakorlatot a kórházban – ki-ki elpróbálva saját szerepét konfliktus esetén. A gondnoki szolgálati lakást 2004-ig lakták: Mohácsi bácsi naponta szellőztetett és karbantartotta az elektromos és gépészeti rendszert, Mohácsi néni pedig takarított, sterilizált és kéthetente újraágyazott. A kórház ma már kiállító-, semmint válsághely: tárlatai egyrészt a háborús ellátás orvosi eszközeivel, műszereivel ismerteti meg a közönséget, másrészt egy élethűen berendezett kórtermen keresztül ténylegesen megmutatja, hogyan is nézett ki a kórház akkor, amikor még elismerő szavak helyett bombák hullottak a „fejére”. (Megközelíthető: A kórház Lovas úti bejárata 2 perc séta a budavári Mátyás-tempomtól, a legközelebbi buszmegálló – 16-os, 16A és 116-os – a Szentháromság téren található, a legközelebbi metrómegálló pedig az M2 Moszkva-téri megállója, ahonnan a Várfok utca–Lovas út útvonalon a kórház gyalogosan elérhető.)

Öntödei Múzeum A Vízivárosi Bem József utcában található Öntödei Múzeum Közép-Európa egyetlen műemlékként megőrzött öntödéje. Eredetileg Ganz Ábrahám vasöntödéje volt, ahol vasúti kerekeket, vasúti kereszteződési betéteket, gabonaipari őrlőhengereket gyártottak Ganz szabadalma alapján. Munkásságát Mechwart András folytatta, az ő vezetésével épült ki a világhírnévre szert tevő GANZ márkanévvel jelzett ipari birodalom, ahol 1964-ig folyt a termelés az eredeti technológia szerint. Ekkor a főváros szívében fekvő gyárat leállították, s a kéregöntöde berendezéseit megőrizve szakmatörténeti múzeummá alakították át, mely mind a mai napig üzemel, s olyan pazar öntvénygyűjteményeket (oszlopok, kályhák, korlátok, lámpák, padok, konzolok, szellőzők rácsai) mutat be, melyekből igazi csipkekirálynővé öltöztethetnénk a fővárost. A múzeum legnagyobb kincse is egy ilyen csipkeköltemény, nevezetesen egy Munkácson készült sakk-készlet, amely olyan aprólékosan cirádált, hogy még kézbe véve is nehéz elhinni, vasból készült. Persze a különös kiállítóhely számtalan efféle ritkaságot őriz: kályhagyűjteménye és szoborkollekciója több jelzett öntvényt tartalmaz – a jelzés itt olyan értékű, mint a festményeken a kézjegy. 60

The hospital is no longer an emergency location but a museum. The exhibition displays war-time medical equipment and instruments and has an authentically furnished ward showing what the hospital looked like when, instead of words of appreciation, it was the sound of falling bombs which filled the air. Getting there: the Lovas Street entrance to the hospital is a two-minute walk from the Matthias Church on Castle Hill. The nearest bus stop (buses no. 16, 16A and 116) is at Holy Trinity Square, while Moscow Square is the nearest underg round stop (line M2), from where the hospital can be approached on foot via Várfok and Lovas Streets.

Foundry Museum The Foundry Museum located in Bem József Street, Water Town, is the only foundry preserved as a listed building in central Europe. It was originally the iron foundry of Ábrahám Ganz and produced railway wheels, railway crossing points and corn milling rolls in line with Ganz’s patents. He was followed by András Mechwart under whose management the industrial giant became internationally noted with the trade mark GANZ. Production continued with the original techno logy until 1964, when the factory in the heart of the city was closed and, with the equipment of the cast foundry being preserved, it was turned into a technology museum which still exists today. The displays include a fabulous cast iron collection (pillars, stoves, banisters, lamps, benches, brackets and vent coverings) which used to dress Budapest like a lace queen. The greatest treasure of the museum is a chess set made in Munkács (today Mukacheve, Ukraine), which is so meticulously ornamented that even when you take it in hand it is difficult to believe it is made of cast iron. The unusual exhibition includes several such rare items: its stove and statue collection has many marked casts – marking on casts is va lued like the signature on a painting. The park in front of the museum contains large casts, original gas lamps and a pantheon of busts depicting outstanding figures in Hungarian foundry. 61

utazás | travel It may sound strange to tempt readers to a foundry exhibition, but when walking among the many unusual iron, aluminium, steel and bronze objects you can realise how many metal creations there are which please the eye. There are the bells which anyone can ring, fabulous stoves from before the First World War, of which there were 400 different varieties on sale in 1910, and various 19th -century household items – irons, pots, paper weights and ink-pots. Professionally committed or simply just curious visitors can even participate in a so-called ‘founding tour’, somewhat like a crash course in metallurgy. Understandably, helmets are compulsory! A múzeum előtti parkban nagyméretű öntvények, eredeti gázlámpák, és a magyar öntészet kiválóságainak mellszobraiból kialakított panteon látható. Belátom, bizarrul hangozhat öntödei kiállításra csábítani bárkit is, de a sok vas, alumínium, acél és bronzfurcsaság között magunk sem gondolnánk, mennyi szemünknek is tetsző fémköltemény szerepel. Ott vannak mindjárt a harangok, melyeket bárki megkondíthat, a Trianon előtti időkből való kályhacsodák, melyekből 1910-ben 400-félét árultak, és a XIX. század háztartási szériakellékei: a vasalók, lábosok, papírnehezékek és tintatartók. A szakmailag elhivatottabb vagy egyszerűen csak kíváncsi látogatók még egy úgynevezett „kupoló túrán” is részt vehetnek, ami leginkább egy kohászati gyorstalpalónak felel meg. Kizárólag sisakban! Underground Railway Museum Continental Europe’s first underground was built beneath Budapest’s Sugár (today Andrássy) Avenue and made its first journey at the end of the 19th century, more precisely on 2 May 1896. Franz Joseph, who was attending Hungary’s Millennium celebrations, inspected the underground railway. With his entourage he travelled in the royal carriage specially made for him from the terminus at Gizella (today Vörösmarty)

Square to the stop near the Zoo. The museum displays a marble plaque recalling the royal visit. It tells you in no uncertain terms about the king’s generosity: his majesty “most graciously agreed to allow” the underground to change its name from Budapest Underground Electric Public Railway to Franz Joseph Underground Electric Railway. Thus began the history of the underground, which has now reached its historic maturity. Visitors can get a glimpse of its 114 years with a special underground experience. Of special interest is that the museum’s exhibition space itself represents a technical monument – an old, in fact original 60-metre section of the Millennium Underground. A crane lowered the exhibited carriages through an open part of the roof. In the entrance hall of the museum exhibition area, which can be approached from the Deák Square underpass, visitors encounter the original Zsolnay tiling of the inner-city terminus and its sign ‘Gizella Square’. From here begins the exciting journey of the underground’s history. Besides authentic, restored railway carriages (to be precise Nos. 19, 1 and 81) there are photographs, archive documents, models and original railway accessories – old signals, contemporary waxwork passengers grown rigid over 100 years, and bells signalling the time to get off. Földalatti Vasúti Múzeum A XIX. század végén, egész pontosan 1896. május 2-án, az egykori Sugár út (ma Andrássy út) alatt első útjára indult Európa legelső földalatti járata. Az ezredévi ünnepségeken Budapesten tartózkodó Ferenc József május 8-án tekintette meg a földalatti vasutat – kíséretével együtt a számára készített királyi kocsin utazott az akkori Gizella (ma Vörösmarty) téri végállomástól az Állatkert megállóig. Az uralkodó látogatásának emlékét márványtábla őrzi a múzeumban, amelyről feketén-fehéren leolvasható a király nagyvonalúsága: őfelsége „legkegyelmesebben megengedte”, hogy az addigi Budapesti Földalatti Villamos Közúti Vasút elnevezés helyett a „kisföldalatti” felvegye a Ferencz József Földalatti Villamos Vasút Rt. nevet. Így indult az immár matuzsálemi korúvá érett földalatti története, melynek 114 évébe egy különös, földalatti utazás során pillanthatnak bele a látogatók. Külön érdekessége a múzeumnak, hogy a kiállítási hely maga is műszaki emlék: a millenniumi földalatti vasút egy régi, ám eredeti, 60 méteres alagútszakasza, ahová a nyitott födémrészen keresztül, daruval emelték be a kiállított járműveket. A Deák téri gyalogos aluljáróból megközelíthető múzeumi kiállítóhely előterében a belvárosi végállomás eredeti Zsolnay csempeburkolata és felirata fogadja a látogatót: „Gizella tér". Innen indul az izgalmas metrótörténeti utazás, melyen a korhűen felújított vasúti kocsik (a pontosság kedvéért: a 19-es, az 1-es és a 81-es pályaszámúakról van szó) mellett fényképek, kordokumentumok, makettek és eredeti vasúti kellékek – régi szemaforok, 100 év alatt viaszfigurává merevedett korabeli utasok és leszállásjelző csengők – kalauzolnak végig. Azt hiszem, most már nyugodtan bevallhatjuk, hogy azt a szót: Wasabi, Magyarországon először egy francia–japán akció–vígjáték címeként hallottuk, amelyben Jean Reno volt a Wasabi… A cím eredetileg úgy szólt, hogy: Wasabi (La petite moutarde qui monte au nez), ami nagyjából azt jelenti, hogy Wasabi, a kis mustár, ami megy fel az orrodba, amit végül a Wasabi – Mar, mint a mustár változatra fordítottak.

It can be readily admitted that the word wasabi was probably first heard in Hungary as the title of a FrenchJapanese action comedy featuring Jean Reno. The original title was Wasabi (La petite moutarde qui monte au nez), which more or less means Wasabi, the little mustard that goes up to your nose, though finally it was given in Hungarian as ‘Wasabi – bites like mustard’.

Miközben a wasabi nem is mustár, hanem egy japán tormaféleség. Olyan erős, hogy nyugodtan versenyezhet a mexikóiak csilipaprikájával. Ám, hogy ez Magyarországon is köztudott legyen, ahhoz előbb meg kellett nyílnia a Wasabi éttermek hálózatának. Merthogy immár négy Wasabi étteremről beszélhetünk: ezekből három Budapesten van, a negyedik pedig az ország második legnagyobb városában, Debrecenben. Az első 2004-ben nyílt a fővárosban, Óbudán. Egy évvel később ugyancsak Budapesten nyitott egy Wasabi, a régi Terézvárosi hangulatot idéző Podmaniczky utcában, újabb egy év elteltével indult a debreceni étterem, a belvárosnak számító Piac utcában, míg végül 2008-ban adták át Buda egyik legelegánsabb bevásárló-központjában, a MOM parkban a negyedik Wasabit. Legalább két különlegességre kell felhívnunk a Wasabikba látogatók figyelmét. Az első a running sushi, vagyis magyarul a futószalag, amely mind a négy étteremben megtalálható, a második, hogy a Wasabi, bár japán szó, és ezért a japán ízvilág a meghatározó mind a négy étteremben, de az ételválaszték nem csak japán: tartanak és kínálnak thai, koreai és egyéb távol-keleti különlegességeket is. Actually, wasabi is not mustard at all but a Japanese type of horseradish. It is so hot it can easily compete with Mexican chilli. Yet for it to become generally known in Hungary, the network of Wasabi restaurants had to open. Now there are already four Wasabi restaurants, three in Budapest and one in Hungary’s second largest city, Debrecen. The first appeared in the Old Buda district of the Hungarian capital in 2004. A year later another Wasabi opened in Budapest’s Podmaniczky Street, which recalls the atmosphere of the old Theresa Town, and the following year the restaurant in Debrecen was launched in the city-centre Piac Street. Finally, in 2008 the fourth Wasabi appeared in MOM, one of Buda’s most elegant shopping centres. Wasabis have at least two special features. The first is running sushi that looks like a conveyor belt and can be found in all four restaurants, while the other is that, although wasabi is a Japanese word and Japanese cuisine dominates all four establishments, the selection of food is not solely Japanese. There are also Thai, Korean and other Far East specialities. Running sushi is a Japanese invention. It involves dishes continuously arriving on a conveyor belt at the guests’ tables where everyone can pick what they feel like eating. Moreover, the conveyor belt is run-

ételek futószalagon, folyamatosan érkeznek a vendégek asztalához, és mindenki olyan falatokat választhat, amihez kedve van. A futószalag ráadásul kétszintes (a Wasabik ebben is elsők Magyarországon): a „földszinten” vonulnak a hideg ételek (a sushik, a makitekercsek, a kimcsik, a saláták, a gyümölcsök, a desszertek), a melegített „emeleten” pedig a wokban készült húsok, zöldségek, halak és más egyéb tengeri érdekességek. Mivel az ár fix, mindenki tetszése és étvágya szerint – korlátok nélkül – válogathat a futószalagról. A csodás ételvariációk kis adagokban cirkulálnak, ezért aztán a Wasabi ideális hely azoknak, akik most ismerkednek a távol-keleti konyhával. Ha bírják, akár mind a közel százféle itt és így kínált különlegességbe belekóstolhatnak, a „haladók” pedig immár célirányosan cserkészhetik be a szalagon érkező kedvenceiket. Az óbudai, Szépvölgyi úti Wasabi a távol-keleti gasztronómia híveinek a kalandparkja, amely a japán, a koreai, a thai és a más távol-keleti konyhaművészetek ízeit és látványvilágát szellemesen elegyíti a vadászösztöneinkben mélyen gyökerező cserkészés és elejtés szenvedélyével. A négy étterem közül egyedül itt működik egy japán látványgrillkonyha is, a Teppanyaki. Külön teppanyaki séf készíti itt a frissen grillezett húsokat-zöldségeket, ami a korlátlan ételfogyasztás rendszerének köszönhetően egyedülállónak mondható az országban. Amit feltétlenül tudni kell: a Wasabik megteremtették a házhozszállítás rendszerét is. A rendelést mindig az az étterem kapja, amelyik a legközelebb van a kért címhez, így csökkentik a szolgáltatás költségeit. Megjegyzendő: igazából akkor kapunk teljes képet a Wasabi választékáról, ha online módon „felütjük” az étlapot; a választék egyszerűen elképesztő. S néhány szó az árakról is. A Wasabikban, változatlan választék mellett, naptól és napszaktól függően 44905990 forintért addig és annyit ehetsz, amennyi csak beléd fér. (A Teppanyaki is csak egy kicsit drágább: 6990 forint, de ezért a látványkonyhában fantasztikus tengeri különlegességeket is készítenek.) Az éttermek egyesítik magukban az à la carte, vagyis az étlapot kínáló hagyományos éttermek stílusát, illetve a running shusihoz jobban passzoló svédasztalos megoldást. És hidegen/melegen ajánljuk a Wasabit mindazoknak, akik a konyhaművészetet a látvány felől is szívesen közelítik. Nemcsak a falatok igen szépek, hanem maga a hely is: az asztalok és a székek, az evőeszközök és az étkészletek, a fény és a zene – mindez együtt autentikus, letisztult formavilágot tükröz. Mintha Japánban lennénk…

The first level has cold dishes (varieties of sushi, maki sushi and kimchi, salads, fruits and desserts), while the upper, heated level offers wok specialities made with meat, vegetables, fish and seafood. Since the prices are set you can freely pick and choose from the conveyor belt to suit your taste and appetite. The marvellous creations circulate in small portions, thus Wasabi is an ideal place for anyone getting acquainted with the cuisine of the Far East. If you can manage it, you may sample all the nearly hundred appetizing delicacies and those in the know can purposefully stalk their favourites arriving on the belt. The Wasabi on Szépvölgyi Road in Old Buda represents an adventure park for enthusiasts of Far Eastern gastronomy. It smartly fuses the tastes and visual spectacle of Japanese, Korean, Thai and other Far Eastern specialities with the passion for stalking and catching, which is deeply rooted in our hunting instincts. Teppanyaki, a Japanese grill where food is made in front of the guests, operates here alone among the four restaurants. A specialist teppanyaki chef prepares the freshly grilled meat and vegetables which, considering the potentially unlimited consumption, can be said to be unique in Hungary. What is certainly worth knowing is that the Wasabis also offer home delivery. The order goes to the restaurant nearest to the address, thus the cost of the service is reduced. To get a full picture of the entire Wasabi range of choice, go on line and click on the menu – the choice is really incredible. As for prices, in the Wasabis you can eat as much and for as long as you wish for a set price of 4,490–5,990 forints, depending on the day and time of day, though the choice is unchanged. (Teppanyaki is somewhat more expensive at 6,999 forints, but that price includes fantastic sea specialities.) The restaurants merge the style of à la carte, namely the traditional restaurant offering a choice from a menu, and a buffet table matching the running sushi. The Wasabi restaurants can also be warmly/coldly recommended to all who are inclined to approach gastronomy from the aspect of spectacle. Not only are the dishes presented beautifully, but so are the places themselves. The tables and chairs, cutlery and crockery, the lights and the music – all together reflect an authentic and pure design. It’s as if you were in Japan.

Húsos tekercs tojással töltve Meat roll with eggs

A tojás nem csupán a húsvét egyik legfontosabb szimbóluma, hanem a természet újjászületésének a jelképe is. A színes tojás dísze az ünnepi asztalnak, nem hiányozhat a sonka mellől, de kínálhatjuk a vendégeinknek kalácsba sütve is, a receptújság útmutatása szerint. Eggs not only represent the most important symbol of Easter but also signify the rebirth of nature. Painted eggs decorating the festive table alongside ham are a must, but for guests we can recommend them baked in sweet bread as described by the recipe magazine (Taste of the Countryside). Az élesztőt olvadásig keverjük a cukorral, majd hozzáöntjük a langyos tejet. Beleszórunk 10 dekányi lisztet, és a kovászt simára keverjük. Félretesszük és megkelesztjük. A megkelt kovászt a liszthez öntjük, hozzáadjuk a tojássárgáját meg a zúzott fokhagymát, picit megsózzuk és borsozzuk, azután a tésztát megdagasztjuk, és langyos helyen a duplájára kelesztjük. Közben elkészítjük a tölteléket: a tojásokat keményre főzzük és megtisztítjuk, a hagymát apróra vágjuk és zsiradékon megfuttatjuk. Hozzáadjuk a darált húst meg az apró kockákra vágott sárgarépát, azután sóval és borssal ízesítve együtt dinszteljük tovább az egészet. Amikor a hús elkészült, összeforgatjuk az apróra vágott újhagymával, paprikával és a finomra aprított petrezselyemmel. A tésztát lisztezett deszkára borítjuk, fél centi vastagra kinyújtjuk, és szétterítjük rajta a langyosra hűlt tölteléket. A tojásokat az egyik szélére sorakoztatjuk – a végükből vágjunk le egy kicsit, hogy összeérjenek –, azután az egészet feltekerjük, mint a bejglit. Kizsírozott tepsibe tes�szük, a tetejét megkenjük tojássárgájával, és a 150 fokra előmelegített sütőben körülbelül 40 perc alatt megsütjük. Salátával tálaljuk. Meat roll with eggs Preparation time: 80 minutes plus rising One portion: 370 kcal Ingredients: For the dough: 500 g flour 30 g yeast 2 egg yolks 200 ml milk 1 garlic clove 1 tsp sugar Salt, Pepper For the filling: 100 g lard or 100 ml oil 300 g minced turkey 1 onion 1 sweet cone pepper 1 large carrot 3 spring onions A bunch of flat parsley leaves 4-5 eggs Salt, Pepper

Mix the yeast with the sugar until it blends and add the lukewarm milk. Stir in 100 g flour until smooth. Leave it to rise. When risen pour the yeast mixture in the flour, add the egg yolks, the crushed garlic and a bit of salt and pepper. Knead the dough and leave in a lukewarm place until it has doubled in size. Meanwhile prepare the filling. Make hardboiled eggs and shell. Chop the onion and fry in the oil. Add the minced turkey, chopped carrot, salt and pepper and stew them. When the meat is ready, mix in the chopped spring onions, cone pepper and the finely chopped parsley. Place the dough on a floured surface, roll out to a thickness of ½ centimetre. Spread the cooled filling on the dough. Line the eggs at one end – cut a bit off each so they can nicely fit together – then roll everything up. Brush the surface with egg yolk. Bake on a greased baking tray in a preheated oven at 150Cº for about 40 minutes. Serve with salad. 67

Sikeres mentőakcióban vett részt a Malév, amelynek keretében a légitársaság Boeing 737-800-as típusú repülőgépe 10 európai ország 96 utasát menekítette ki a polgárháború sújtotta Líbiából, köztük 24 magyar állampolgárt. A Malév-gépet Martonyi János külügyminiszter és Hende Csaba honvédelmi miniszter fogadta. A külügyminiszter külön köszönetet mondott Pintér Sándor belügyminiszternek és Hajdú Jánosnak, a Terrorelhárítási Központ (TEK) vezetőjének, valamint Fehérváry Gézának, a Malév üzemeltetési vezérigazgató-helyettesének – aki egyben a járat kapitánya is volt –, és a járat teljes személyzetének. Külön szólt a tripoli nagykövetség munkatársairól, akik továbbra is Líbiában maradtak. A gépen utazók hazaszállítását illetően Martonyi János mindenkinek gratulált a példás együttműködésért. Mint mondta, jelképes jelentőséget tulajdonít annak, hogy 10 európai nemzet polgárait hozták el, köztük románokat, litvánokat, lengyeleket, cseheket és a cseh nagykövetet is. Ez egy szép példája annak, hogy mi, magyarok együtt tudunk működni, ha erre szükség van – hangsúlyozta. A Malév tripoli járatának személyzete és a járatot előkészítő maléves szakemberek hibátlanul teljesítették a nem mindennapi feladatot. A kormányzattal és a TEK-kel folytatott állandó egyeztetés mellett gyorsan megtörtént a járat előkészítése, a szükséges engedélyek beszerzése, melynek köszönhetően a MA1304-es járat február 27-én reggel elindulhatott Tripoliba, ahol a landolás után hosszas várakozást követően tudott csak felszállni. A késés oka az volt, hogy a Malév-gép utasait csak nehezen lehetett bejuttatni a repülőtérre a terminálon uralkodó kaotikus állapotok miatt. A magyar nagykövetségnek, a Terrorelhárítási Központnak, a Baptista Szeretetszolgálat humanitárius szakembereinek és a Malév-gép személyzetének köszönhetően végül magyar idő szerint este fél hatkor szállhatott fel Budapest felé, ahol nem sokkal nyolc óra után landolt.

Malév took part in a successful rescue operation when the Hungarian national carrier’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft flew 96 passengers of ten countries including 24 Hungarians to safety from civil war struck Libya. The Malév jet was received by Mi nister of Foreign Affairs János Martonyi and Defence Minister Csaba Hende. The foreign minister expressed his special gratitude to Sándor Pintér, Minister of Interior, János Hajdú, head of the Anti-Terrorism Centre (TEK) and Géza Fehérváry, Malév’s Chief Operational officer, who captained the special flight, as well as the entire crew. He spoke particularly about Hungary’s embassy staff who had remained in Tripoli. With regard to the repatriation of those travelling on the aircraft, János Martonyi congratulated everyone for their exemplary co-operation. He said that he regarded the fact that citizens of 10 European nations including Romanians, Lithuanians, Poles, Czechs and the Czech ambassador as being of a symbolic significance. “This is an excellent example of how we Hungarians are able to cooperate when needed,” he emphasised. The crew of the Malév flight and the airline’s experts who prepared the flight fulfilled the unusual mission perfectly. Besides maintaining constant contact with the government and TEK, flight preparations were made swiftly and the necessary flight licences obtained quickly. As a result, flight MA1304 was able to depart for Tripoli in the morning on 27 February where after landing it could make the return journey only after a lengthy wait. The reason for the delay was that it was very difficult to get the passengers for the flight into the airport due to the chaotic situation at the terminal. Thanks to the Hungarian Embassy, the Anti-Terrorist Centre, the humanitarian aid workers of Baptist Aid and the crew of the Malév flight the aircraft was finally able to take off for its return to Budapest at 5.30 p.m. Hungarian time. It landed at Ferihegy shortly after 8 p.m. local time.

The proportion of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions caused by the air travel industry is only two per cent. Nevertheless airports, which are responsible for just one twentieth of that, have a duty to join the international efforts against global warming. That is the standpoint of the industry’s most significant European organisation, ACI (Airport Council International) Europe, which has presented Ferihegy’s operator, Budapest Airport, with a prestigious environmental protection award. In early March, Siim Kalls, vice-president of the European Commission and European Transport Commissioner, who was in Budapest, congratulated Jost Lammers, CEO of Budapest Airport on its so-called carbon accreditation.

Airport declares war on carbon dioxide Ferihegy in the European elite club regarding emissions Bár a globális szén-dioxid-kibocsátás csupán két százaléka írható a légiközlekedési iparág rovására – és ennek is pusztán öt százalékért felelősek a repülőterek –, a világ légikikötőinek mégis részt kell vállalniuk a felmelegedés elleni világméretű összefogásban – erre a következtetésre jutott a szakma legjelentősebb európai szervezete, az ACI (Airport Council International) Europe, amely rangos környezetvédelmi elismerésben részesítette a ferihegyi repülőteret üzemeltető Budapest Airportot. A cég úgynevezett karbon akkreditált minősítéséhez a március elején Budapesten tartózkodó Siim Kallas, az Európai Bizottság alelnöke és közlekedési biztosa gratulált Jost Lammersnek, a Budapest Airport vezérigazgatójának.

A minősítés lényegében azt jelenti, hogy a Budapest Airport immár azon európai repülőterek sorába tartozik, amelyek elkötelezettek a hatékony energiafelhasználás mellett és kiemelkedő jelentőségűnek tekintik a szén-dioxid-kibocsátás csökkentését. Az ACI Europe által életre hívott kezdeményezés célja, hogy a repülőterek ismerjék fel saját felelősségüket és fogjanak össze a klímaváltozás elleni globális küzdelemben. Ugyan néhány évtizeddel ezelőtt Európában még senki sem hallott a szén-dioxidlábnyomokról vagy az üvegházhatásról, manapság már mindenki tudja, hogy minél alacsonyabbak a szén-dioxid-kibocsátások, annál közelebb kerülünk egy fenntartható gazdasági és szociális fejlődési modellhez, amelynek megvalósításában a világgazdaság jelentős piaci szereplőinek, így a repülőtereknek is úttörő szerepet kell vállalniuk. A teljes akkreditációs folyamat valójában négy fázisból áll, ezek közül az első lépcsőfokot teljesítette most a budapesti repülőtér, azzal, hogy tételesen felmérte a repülőtér 2009. évi szén-dioxidkibocsátását, illetve olyan irányelvet fogadott el, amelyben elkötelezte magát a kibocsátás fokozatos csökkentése mellett. A folyamat során a Budapest Airport szakemberei nemzetközi szakértők bevonásával kiszámolták a repülőtér üzemeltetéséből adódó szén-dioxid-kibocsátást, majd az így kapott adatokat egy erre kijelölt független szervezettel hitelesíttették. Az adatok pontos képet adtak egyebek mellett az erőműház gázfelhasználásáról, a vételezett villamos energia mennyiségéről, valamint az autók üzemanyag felhasználásából adódó szén-dioxid-kibocsátásról. A végleges jelentést az ACI hivatalos adminisztrátor-partnere, egy londoni székhelyű tanácsadó iroda kapta meg, amely ezt követően megküldte az értesítést arról, hogy a repülőtér felvételt nyert a környezetvédelmi „elitklubba”. Az akkreditációs folyamat második fázisában a projektben résztvevő munkatársak azt szeretnék elérni, hogy a következő hitelesítés során konkrét, kimutatható csökkenést regisztrálhasson a Budapest Airport. A későbbiekben, a harmadik és negyedik szakaszban az energiafelhasználás optimalizálására kell törekedni, majd végül azt kell elérni, hogy a szén-dioxid-kibocsátás szempontjából gyakorlatilag semlegessé váljon a repülőtér. A Budapest Airport már eddig is számos önkéntes feladatot vállalt a fenntartható fejlődés érdekében. A repülőteret üzemeltető cég 2007-ben indított energiaracionalizálási programjának részeként egyebek mellett felújította a futópályák fénytechnikai rendszerét, napkollektor rendszert telepített az 1-es terminál tetejére, valamint jelentősen csökkentette földgázfelhasználását is. A most megkezdett folyamat eredményeként tovább csökken a budapesti repülőtér „szén-dioxid-lenyomata”, ami az éghajlatváltozást előidéző környezetterhelés egyik legfontosabb mutatószáma.

The accreditation essentially means that Budapest Airport has joined the group of European airports committed to efficient energy consumption and to placing great emphasis on the reduction of CO2 emissions. The aim of the initiative launched by ACI Europe is that airports should recognise their responsibilities and work together in a global effort to combat climate change. A few decades ago no one in Europe had heard of carbon footprints or the greenhouse effect, but today everyone knows that the lower the level of carbon di oxide emissions, the sooner we can attain the model of a sustainable economy with social development. In the course of realising this, significant market players, including airports, have to assume a pioneering role. The full accreditation process consists of four phases, of which Budapest Airport has fulfilled the first phase by assessing the airport’s CO2 emissions for 2009 in detail and approving a directive committing itself to their gradual reduction. As part of the process Budapest Airport specialists, with the involvement of international experts, calculated the CO2 emissions deriving from the airport’s operation, and then had this data certified by an independent organisation appointed for this purpose. The data give a precise picture of, for example, gas consumption, the quantity of electrical energy used and the carbon dioxide emissions due to the use of vehicle fuel. The final report on CO2 emissions was received by ACI’s official administration partner, a London-based consultancy company, which then sent notification that the airport had been admitted to the ‘elite environmental club’. In the second phase of the accreditation process, project members would like to ensure that in the course of the next certification Budapest Airport can register a demonstrable reduction in emissions. Later, in the third and fourth phases, the aim is optimisation of energy consumption, with the final goal being to make the airport essentially neutral in terms of CO2 emissions. Budapest Airport has already voluntarily assumed numerous tasks in the interest of sustainable development. As part of the airport operator’s energy rationalisation project, launched in 2007 it has, for example, renovated the lighting system of the runways, installed solar panels on the roof of Terminal 1 and significantly reduced its consumption of natural gas. As a result of the recently begun process, Budapest Airport’s ‘carbon footprint’ – one of the most important indicators of environmental burdens causing climate change – is continuing to shrink.

Ez a város ad otthont az európai mezőgazdasági miniszterek informális tanácsülésének. A május végi találkozóval egy időben, ugyancsak az alföldi városban ülésezik majd az Európai Tanács Mezőgazdasági Különbizottsága (SCA). Az uniós vendégek megismerkedhetnek a „cívis-város” nevezetességeivel, kultúrájával, a régió jellegzetes ételeivel és italaival; talán még pulykakakas is kerül az asztalra… Debrecen Közép-Európa legnagyobb füves térsége, a híres magyar puszta szélén található. In the words of a noted Hungarian folk song: “Let’s go to Debrecen and buy a turkey hen there.” During the first half of this year, the period of Hungary’s EU presidency, many people will be following the song’s suggestion. During Hungary’s presidency nearly 260 specialist events of various levels are being held in different locations across the country. Most are taking place in Budapest and Gödöllő, but others are being held elsewhere, for example, in Debrecen, which will host the informal Council meeting of EU Agriculture Ministers. In parallel, the European Council’s Special Committee on Agriculture (SCA) will also meet in the town on the Great Plain. EU guests will be able to get acquainted with the sights and culture of the ‘civic city’ as it is often referred to, as well as the region’s characteristic food and drink – perhaps even a turkey hen will be served. Debrecen is situated on the edge of central Europe’s largest grassland, the noted Hungarian puszta. Guests will visit the Hortobágy National Park, which features on UNESCO’s World Cultural and Natural Heritage List.

A tervező olyan „mindentudó” házat álmodott meg, amely méltó környezet mind a szakmai konferenciák, mind a kulturális rendezvények számára, amelyben a terek tetszés szerint összekapcsolhatók vagy éppen szétválaszthatók, miközben a termek a legmagasabb technikai igényeknek is megfelelnek. Az épületbe lépve a rengeteg üveg, fa és kő skandináv hangulatot idéz. A hatalmas ablakokon keresztül ömlik a fény. A sok faburkolat – a nyír, a juhar és a mahagónihoz hasonlatos okumé – tisztaságot, melegséget és barátságosságot sugároz. A nagyterem, a szekciótermek, az elegáns bálterem, a kiállítóterem, a világos előcsarnok remek környezetet biztosít bármilyen rendezvénynek. Olyan világsztárok fordultak meg már itt, mint Schiff András, Jan Garbarek, Chick Corea, Rost Andrea vagy Cesaria Evora. The meeting of EU Agriculture Ministers will be held in eastern Hungary’s largest and most modern conference centre, the Kölcsey Centre in Debrecen’s historic central area. It is named after the poet Ferenc Kölcsey, who studied at the city’s Calvinist College and later penned the Hungarian National Anthem. Five years ago the centre was constructed on a groundplan of 13,000 square metres near the site of his former house, which had been demolished a long time ago. The architect designed a multi-purpose building, creating a high-standard environment for both professional conferences and cultural events. The interiors can be connected or separated as needed, while the halls and rooms meet the highest technical requirements. On entering the building an abundance of glass, wood and stone recalls a Scandinavian atmosphere. Light floods through enormous windows. The large amount of okumé wood panelling – similar to birch, maple and mahogany – radiates purity, warmth and friendliness. The main hall, meeting rooms, elegant ball room, exhibition hall and the light and airy foyer provide an excellent venue for any event. International stars who have performed here include András Schiff, Jan Garbarek, Chick Corea, Andrea Rost and Cesaria Evora. The exhibition hall has hosted several major shows presenting the works of János Lestyán Goda, Sándor Győrfi, János Kass, Endre Szász, Árpád Bényi, Hundertwasser and Hasegawa, as well as the Hungarian News Agency’s photographic exhibition (M)érték – internationally renowned photographers, the Press Photo Exhibition and Hidden Beauty, a travelling exhibition of the Museum of Fine Arts. A glass panorama lift takes visitors to a roof terrace where in a green environment they can sip coffee while counting the city’s church towers.

Debrecen az ország egyik legfontosabb oktatási központja is, egyetemei, iskolái és szakképesítést adó oktatási intézményei az ország minden szegletéből fogadják a diákokat. Debrecen történelme egészen a középkorig nyúlik vissza. I. Anjou Lajos király (1326–1382) számos előjoggal ruházta fel a várost: saját bírót és városi tanácsot is választhatott. A török hódoltság alatt Debrecen fejlődése megrekedt, és csak elöljárói rátermettségének és találékonyságának köszönhette, hogy lakosait megvédve átvészelte ezt az időszakot. A város az utóbbi két században kétszer is az ország fővárosává lépett elő. Először 1849-ben, amikor Kossuth Lajos magyar forradalmi kormánya Budapestről ide menekült, másodszor pedig a második világháború utolsó szakaszában, 1944 végén, amikor Debrecen rövid időre a német megszállás alól felszabadult Magyarország fővárosa lett. A város büszkesége, a főtéren álló Református Nagytemplom nem csupán vallási emlék, hanem a magyar történelem több jeles eseményének is színhelye: ott jelentették be a Habsburgház trónfosztását 1849-ben. A rendszerváltozás után, 1991-ben II. János Pál pápa is meglátogatta a templomot.

Debrecen is Hungary’s second largest city and is situated on the northern Great Plain, 220 kilometres from Budapest. It is often called the ‘Calvinist Rome’, since during the 16th -century Reformation its residents converted to the new faith and the city soon became the focus of Protestantism in Hungary. Debrecen is one of the most important centres of education in the country and students from across Hungary come to study at its universities, schools and vocational training institutes. Debrecen’s history dates back to the Middles Ages. Louis the Great (1326–1382) granted the city many prerogatives, including the right to elect its own judge and city council. During the Ottoman occupation, Debrecen’s development came to a standstill and it was only due to the skill and ingenuity of its leaders that its inhabitants survived this period. During the last two centuries the city twice became Hungary’s capital; first in 1849 when the revolutionary government of Lajos Kossuth fled there from Budapest and then again for a short time in late 1944 when Hungary was liberated from German occupation. The pride of the city, the Calvinist Great Church in the main square, is not only a religious edifice, it has also been the site of important events in Hungarian history. It was there, for example, that the dethronement of the Habsburgs was announced in 1849. Following the political changes Pope John Paul II paid a visit to the church in 1991.

A konzul, Zaid Naffa szerint a két ország közti eredményes kapcsolathoz a diplomácia önmagában kevés, a sikerhez az is kell, hogy a két nép megismerje egymást.

According to Zaid Naffa, to create successful relations between two countries diplomacy alone is not enough. What is required is that the people of both countries get to know each other.

E gondolat szellemében nyílt mód arra, hogy négy év alatt több mint 150 ezer magyar turista látogasson el Jordániába, és így a magyarok személyesen is megtapasztalják a jordánok vendégszeretetét, a békés és biztonságos ország páratlan turisztikai látványosságait. Zaid Naffa elmélete beigazolódott; a két nép olyannyira megszerette egymást, hogy a turizmus mellett ugrásszerűen megnőtt a kereskedelem is: évi 6 millió dollárról mára 300 millió dollárra emelkedett a két ország közti árucsere forgalma. Ezek után joggal gondolhatnánk, hogy a konzul született diplomata, ám ezzel szemben ifjúkorától kezdve vadászpilótának készült! A katonai karriertől végül az aggódó szülők tiltották el, és biztos, ami biztos alapon jó messzire, egyenesen Budapestre küldték tanulni, ahol végül – az otthon maradottak legnagyobb ijedtségére – egy napon pilótaként mégis a levegőbe emelkedett…

In the spirit of that idea, over four years more than 150,000 Hungarian tourists have visited Jordan and thus personally experienced Jordanian hospitality and seen the unparalleled tourist sights of this peaceful and safe country. Zaid Naffa’s theory has proved sound – the two peoples have taken a liking to each other such that besides tourism trade has also increased by leaps and bounds. Commerce between the two countries has risen from an annual six million to 300 million dollars. You might well imagine that the consul was a born diplomat, whereas in his youth he trained to be a fighter pilot! His worried parents eventually called a halt to his military career and, just to make sure, sent him straight to Budapest to study, where one day he nevertheless – to the greatest alarm of those he had left at home – took to the air as a pilot.

Erre én azt mondtam, hogy vagy pilóta leszek, vagy nem tanulok semmit! Végül rábeszéltek, hogy ha nem is pilótának, de valami ehhez kapcsolódó dologról tanuljak, így kerültem a Műszaki Egyetemre. De azért nem hagyott nyugodni a repülés iránti vágy! Sikerült találkoznom egy olyan oktatóval, aki Jordániában képzett pilótákat. Elmeséltem neki a történetemet, és hogy minden zsebpénzemet hajlandó vagyok a repülésre költeni, hajlandó vagyok akár száraz kenyéren élni, csak tanítson meg repülni. Persze, amikor Jordániába eljutott a hír, mindenki rosszul volt! Az évek során végül elmaradt a repülés, de amikor beülök például egy Malév-gépbe, érzem, pontosan tudom, hogy mi, mikor és miért történik. Milyen magasan vagyunk, mikor teszi ki a pilóta a fékszárnyakat, mikor nyílnak ki a kerekek stb.

nally training to be a pilot, but my parents objected to me pursuing that career. My mother said it was out of the question for her to be constantly worried because of me. My response was that I’d either be a pilot or I wouldn’t study anything! In the end they persuaded me that, if not to be a pilot I should study something related to that. Thus I came to the University of Technology. At the same time I didn’t abandon my eagerness to fly. I managed to meet a lecturer who trained pilots in Jordan. I told him my story and how I was ready to devote all my pocket money to flying and even live off dry bread, if only he would teach me to fly. He understood my situation and all I had to pay for was the fuel. The day soon came when I took to the air on my own. Of course, when the news reached Jordan everyone got worked up! After some years I gave up flying, but when, for example, I enter a Malév aircraft, I feel – in fact I know – what, when and why things are happening: how high we are, when the pilot applies the brake flaps, when the wheels are lowered, and so on.

– Jólesik, amikor az emberek Jordániából hazatérve azt mondják, hogy másodszor, harmadszor is szívesen visszamennének. Nem véletlenül! Jordániában több ezer éves, egyedülálló kulturális emlékeket lehet megcsodálni. Több mint tízezer vallási és történelmi műemlék van az országban, amelyek közül a legkiemelkedőbbek Petra és Jerash. Annyi minden történt ezen a földön vallási és történelmi vonatkozásban, hogy szinte lehetetlen mindent megnézni. Ráadásul az ország sokszínű! A hagyományos – tengerparti, nyaraló – turizmus mellett megtalálható a történelmi, a vallási és a gyógyturizmus is. Ez utóbbi terén kiemelkedőek a Holt-tenger adta lehetőségek. Csak egy szemléletes példát hadd hozzak: a világ népességének 13 százaléka enyhén vagy intenzíven szenved a pikkelysömör betegségben, amit egyedül a világon a Holt-tenger vize, iszapja képes gyógyítani. Nagyon fontos emellett, hogy a hívő emberek fontos szent helyeket találnak ezen a földön. Három nagy világvallásnak, a kereszténységnek, az iszlámnak és a zsidó vallásnak vannak itt szent helyei.

It feels good when people return from Jordan and say they’d like to go back for a second or third time. That’s not surprising, since in Jordan you can admire unique cultural monuments which are thousands of years old. The country boasts of more than 10,000 religious and historical listed buildings, among which the most striking are found at Petra and Jerash. So much has happened in this land in connection with religion and history that it’s almost impossible to see everything. Moreover, the country itself is full of variety. Besides traditional seaside, summer-holiday tourism, there is also historical, religious and health tourism. Regarding the latter, the Dead Sea offers outstanding possibilities. One vivid example – 13 per cent of the world’s population suffers from psoriasis and, uniquely in the world, the water and mud of the Dead Sea is able to cure this. In addition, it’s very important that believers can find holy sites in this land, which contains places sacred to the world’s three great religions of Christianity, Islam and Judaism.

In view of all this Jordan is an island of peace. Nevertheless, it’s an unavoidable fact that the country lies in the heart of the Middle East, an area overloaded with problems.

– Jordánia békés ország mind a látogatók, mind a befektetők számára. A turisták nyugodtan sétálhatnak bárhol és bármikor, senki nem bántja őket, a kereskedők számára pedig egy nyugodt, kiszámítható gazdasági környezetet garantálunk. A jordán dinár a dollárhoz van kötve, bármilyen mozgás történik is a pénzpiacon, a gazdaságban, ez nem változik meg. A befektetőknek mindez óriási biztonságot jelent, nem kell aggódniuk amiatt, hogy a befektetésükből akár 20-25 százalékot is elveszíthetnek a devizaárfolyam ingadozása miatt. Jordánia fizetőeszköze stabil. Őfelsége II. Abdullah király személyesen adott olyan utasítást a kormánynak, hogy minden segítséget adjanak meg a befektetések támogatására. Az országnak fontos politikai küldetése is van: Őfelsége a stabilizációra és a béke megteremtésére törekszik a Közel-Keleten, arra, hogy az arab–izraeli konfliktusnak vége legyen egy független palesztin állam létrejöttével, és szavatolja a biztonságot mindenkinek a térségben.

Jordan is a peaceful country from the point of view of visitors and investors alike. Tourists can calmly go wherever and whenever they want, no one will disturb them. For business people an undisturbed, reliable economic environment is guaranteed. The Jordanian dinar is linked to the dollar and whatever happens in the financial markets or in the economy this doesn’t change. For investors this offers a huge assurance that they’ve no need to fear losing 20-25 per cent of their investments due to exchange rate fluctuations. Jordan’s currency is stable. His majesty King Abdullah II has personally instructed the government to offer all means of support to help investors. The country also has an important political mission – for the maintenance of stability and peace His Majesty is making an effort throughout the Middle East to ensure an end to the Arab-Israeli conflict and the creation of an independent Palestinian state, guaranteeing security to everyone in the region. 89

– A térségben betöltött „béke szigete” státusz kihat a külpolitikára is?

Does being an ‘island of peace’ in the region have an effect on foreign policy, too?

– Országunknak kiváló kapcsolatai vannak nemcsak szomszédjaival, hanem az összes arab és iszlám országgal, de talán büszkén mondhatom, hogy az egész világgal: az Egyesült Államokkal, valamint az EU-val is, amely 2010. október végén a közel-keleti országok közül egyedül Jordániának adta meg az úgynevezett „advanced status”-t. Ez azt jelenti, hogy szoros kapcsolatunk van az EU-val mind politikai, mind pedig gazdasági szempontból. Természetesen most, amikor Magyarország az EU soros elnöke, Jordánia Magyarországon keresztül igyekszik még inkább erősíteni az EU-s kapcsolatait. A magyar–jordán diplomáciai kapcsolat 1964. július 1-jén jött létre. Azóta a politikai kapcsolatok kiválóak, de a gazdaságiak nem voltak annyira fényűzőek. A két ország közti kereskedelem 40 éven keresztül évi 6 millió dolláros szinten stagnált. Ám 2000–2005 között mintegy 150 ezer magyar turista látogatta meg Jordániát, szájról szájra terjedt, hogy milyen szép, biztonságos az ország, és milyen kedvesek az emberek. Mindez bizalmat adott a kereskedőknek az együttműködés kiterjesztésére. Az elmúlt öt esztendőben a forgalom ugrásszerűen megnőtt, és mára elérte az évi 300 millió dolláros szintet.

We have outstanding relations not only with our immediate neighbours but with all Arab and Islamic countries, and maybe I can proudly say with the whole world – with the United States as well as with the EU, which at the end of last October, uniquely for the region, gave so-called ‘advanced status’ to Jordan. This means we have close relations with the EU, from both the political and economic aspects. Naturally, in view of Hungary’s EU presidency Jordan is making efforts in Hungary to intensify its relations with the EU. Hungarian-Jordanian diplomatic relations were established on 1 July 1964. Since then political relations have been excellent, though on the economic side things have not been so bright. For 40 years trade between the two count ries stagnated at an annual level of 6 million dollars. However, between 2000 and 2005 around 150,000 Hungarian tourists visited Jordan and by word of mouth it became known how attractive and safe the country is, and how friendly the people are. All this has given confidence to business people to develop cooperation. In the past five years the volume of trade has shot up and today has reached the level of 300 million dollars a year.

– Úgy tűnik, Ön leginkább az emberi kapcsolatokban látja a fejlődés zálogát.

– Hiszek az emberi kapcsolatokban! Az állami kapcsolatok is fontosak, alapvetőek, de ez önmagában kevés. A két ország közti kapcsolatot egy labdához vagy egy gömbhöz tudnám hasonlítani, amely két félből áll. Egyik fele az állam, a másik a magánszféra. Ha ez a két fél pontosan össze van illesztve, akkor nagyon jól gurul, ám ha egy kicsi eltérés van az illesztésben, akkor elakad. Ezért volt fontos számomra, hogy a magyarok elmenjenek Jordániába, megismerjék a helyi viszonyokat, és ezek alapján ők döntsék el, hogy akarnak-e Jordániával kezdeni valamit, vagy nem. Ennek a személyes tapasztalatszerzésnek köszönhető a két ország közti kereskedelmi mérleg dinamikus növekedése. Nagy megtiszteltetés volt számomra, hogy ezért a magyar köztársasági elnök magas állami kitüntetést adományozott nekem! De van számomra egy másik nagy kitüntetés is: az, hogy nagyon sok magyar emberrel ismertethettem meg Jordániát, sok munkát és energiát fektettem az évek során abba, ami a kétoldalú kapcsolatok gyümölcsöző politikai, gazdasági, kereskedelmi és kulturális eredményeiben mutatkozik meg. – Jól ismeri a magyarokat, Magyarországot, mit gondol a jövőnkről?

– A jelenlegi gazdasági helyzet annak köszönhető, hogy az egyik rendszerből a másikba való átmenethez időre volt szükség. Bíztató, hogy Magyarország – és erre szeretném, ha mindenki emlékezne – négy-hét éven belül nagyon sok szomszéd országánál jobb gazdasági helyzetben lesz! Magyarország népe akar és szeret dolgozni, és nem ismernek lehetetlent! Ráadásul az ország kitűnő földrajzi adottsággal rendelkezik, ami logisztikai szempontból a legjobb! Sok tanult, művelt és ambiciózus ember van önöknél, nyugodtan bízhatnak abban, hogy tovább építik az országukat. H. Á. 90

It seems that you yourself mostly see the basis of development in human contacts.

I’m a believer in human contacts! Relations between states are important, fundamental, but on their own are not enough. I could compare the relations between the two countries to a ball or rounded object with two halves. One is the state, the other the private sphere. If the two halves are perfectly matched, then the ball rolls very well, but if there’s some misalignment then it comes to a halt. Hence I see it as important that Hungarians go to Jordan and familiarise themselves with local relations, and then on that basis decide whether they want to start something with Jordan or not. It’s thanks to these personal experiences that trade between the two countries has risen dynamically. It was honoured when, because of it, Hungary’s president awarded me a high state prize. But from my point of view I have another badge of honour – the fact that I’ve been able to introduce Jordan to very many Hungarians, and that I’ve done a lot of work and spent a lot of energy over the years so that the bilateral relations would manifest themselves in fruitful political, economic, commercial and cultural results. You are well familiar with Hungarians and know Hungary. What do you think about the country’s future?

The current economic situation reflects the fact that moving from one system to another has required a period of transition. It’s encouraging that within 4-7 years – and I’d like everyone to remember this – Hungary will be in a better economic situation than many of its neighbours. Hungarians want and like to work and they think that anything is possible. Moreover, the country’s outstanding geographical characteristics mean it is in the best position from a logistical perspective. There are many educated, cultured and ambitious people in Hungary. You can be securely confident that they are continuing to develop the country. Á. H.

You have countless hotel matters to deal with, you travel a lot, so where do you feel most at home?

New York-ból származom, és lehet, hogy furcsán hangzik, de Budapesten érzem leginkább azt, hogy a legközelebb vagyok szülővárosomhoz. Mindkét város a XIX. században indult fejlődésnek, és emiatt a különbözőségük mellett sok a hasonlóság is. New York-ban persze számos Budapesten látható építészeti stílust nem találhatunk meg, úgy mint például a szecessziót, de két olyan New York-i metró-állomás is van, melyeket még a második világháború előtti Andrássy úti földalatti állomásról másoltak le. Ha valaki tehát szeretné megtekinteni, hogy milyen volt ez a budapesti megálló a háború előtt, akkor New York-ba kell utaznia. De más kelet-közép-európai városokban is otthon érzem magam, legyen szó akár Rigáról vagy Prágáról.

I come from New York and yet, however strange it may sound, I feel I am closest to my home city when I am in Budapest. Both metropolises began to grow in the 19 th century, and because of this they show many similarities as well as differences. For instance, in New York one obviously cannot find numerous architectural styles that are evident in Budapest, such as Art Nouveau, but there are two New York metro stations which were copied from an underground station on Andrássy Avenue dating from before the Second World War. In other words, if you want to get a glimpse of what this Budapest station looked like before the war, then you have to go to New York. But I also feel at home in other CentralEastern European cities, whether it be Riga or Prague.

Igen, híres politikusok, sztárok és művészek gyakran vendégei a szállodáinknak. The Budapest hotel is a familiar venue for the local media, since many Hollywood stars like Madonna, Michael Jackson and Arnold Schwarzenegger, to name but the biggest ones, have stayed here. Is this also typical for your other hotels?

Man in space!

Ember az űrben! Április 12. az Űrhajózás Napja. Ötven évvel ezelőtt: 1961. április 12-én a Szovjetunióban Föld körüli pályára bocsátották a világ első embert szállító űrhajóját, fedélzetén Jurij Alekszejevics Gagarin repülő őrnag�gyal. Bizonyára nem véletlen, hogy ugyanezen a napon – csak éppen húsz évvel később, vagyis 1981. április 12-én hajtotta végre első, kétnapos próbarepülését a Columbia, az első amerikai űrrepülőgép, amely egyben az első újra felhasználható űreszköz is volt, amit a világűrben kipróbáltak. S, hogy áprilisban ne csak egy napon, hanem akár az egész hónapban emlékezhessünk az űrhajózásra, éppen tíz éve: 2001. április 28-án, indult a kazahsztáni Bajkonurból a történelem első űrturistája, az amerikai Dennis Tito. De persze a legfontosabb dátum azért továbbra is Gagariné, akinek az útja komoly aggodalommal és féltékenységgel töltötte el a rivalizáló amerikaiakat. Bizonyára ennek is köszönhetőek azok a mendemondák, amelyek azóta is előkerülnek, hogy tudniillik nem is Gagarin volt az első, előtte is küldtek a szovjetek embereket a világűrbe, de azok szörnyethaltak. Ám a legendákból egy szó sem igaz, annál is inkább nem, mert ahogy Gagarin útját, úgy minden más fellőtt szovjet rakétát, műholdat is erős figyelem kísérte a „túloldalon”. Gagarin repülése pontosan 108 percig tartott. Moszkvai idő szerint reggel 9 óra 7 perckor startolt a Vosztok űrhajó Bajkonurból. Egy perccel később levált a hordozórakéta első fokozata, öt perccel később a második is. Kilenc óra 18 perckor az űrhajó Föld körüli pályára állt, Gagarin jelentette, hogy a súlytalanság állapotába került. Tíz óra 25-kor bekapcsolták a fékezőrendszert, megkezdődött a leereszkedés. The twelfth of April is Spaceflight Day. Fifty years ago, on 12 April 1961, the Soviet Union launched the first manned spaceship on its journey around the world. On board was Major Yuri Alexeyevich Gagarin. Undoubtedly it was not by chance that on this date precisely 20 years later, on 12 April 1981, the first American space shuttle, Columbia, set off on its two-day test flight. Columbia was the first re-usable spacecraft to be tried in space. And so that it’s not just one day in April which makes us recollect space flight, but the whole month, it was precisely ten years ago, on 28 April 2001, when the first space tourist in history, the American Dennis Tito, took off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Of course, the most important date remains that of Gagarin’s flight. His journey filled the rival Americans with alarm and jealousy. Probably thanks to that, there were rumours, still circulating today, to the effect that Gagarin was not the first, that the Soviets had previously sent people into space, but they had died a quick death. Not one word of the legends is true, if only due to the fact that, as with Gagarin’s flight, every launched Soviet rocket or satellite was rigorously monitored by the ‘other side’. Gagarin’s flight lasted precisely 108 minutes. His Vostok 1 capsule left Baikonur at 9.07 am Moscow time. One minute later the first rocket stage fell away, followed later by the second. At 9.18 the spacecraft was on its way around the world and Gagarin reported that he was in a state of weightlessness. At 10.25 the braking system was activated and the descent began. Gagarin reached earth at 10.55. Four minutes later he was picked up by the research team waiting for him. G. Sz.
