Accenture takes its sustainability targets very seriously. By 2025, the company intends to have reduced its carbon emissions by at least 60% relative to 2019. Already, they are at 75% of that target, thanks to ongoing investments in electric vehicles, a mobility budget and a shift towards virtual meetings. Roy Ikink, managing director and lead of Accenture Technology in the Netherlands, drives a fully electric BMW iX50. “When my lease ended two years ago, I’d been thinking for a while that I didn’t want another traditional petrol car. And then when my wife and kids started about an EV as well, it became a no-brainer. As soon as the first BMW models with a serious range arrived in Van Poelgeest’s Amsterdam showroom, I was sold.”

You have been with Accenture for almost 19 years. Have your commuting patterns changed in recent years? And, if so, how? “During all the time I’ve been at Accenture, I mostly worked on client projects. That meant travelling all over the country, sometimes more than 50,000 or even over 80,000 kilometres a year. I always enjoyed driving a nice and safe car. As I worked my way up to more senior roles, I divided my time over multiple clients and spent more time at the Accenture office. Since Covid, I’ve worked from home more often. That saves loads of journey time.”
You currently drive a fully electric BMW iX50. What’s the verdict? “It’s a great ride. You hear about drawbacks sometimes, but driving electric is no
problem in the Netherlands, and holidays have been a breeze as well. We took this BMW on a ski holiday and also to Italy over the summer, and both trips were very comfortable. The car drives beautifully and charging it is a piece of cake. The range is about 500 kilometres, and the kids actually appreciated the half-hour breaks to recharge.”
Would you recommend this car to people in Zuidas? “I have been driving BMWs for years and know most of the series – the 1, the 3, the 5. So, when a fully electric iX came on the market, I was super excited. The car drives and feels like a BMW should, and I’d recommend it to anyone. Plus, Zuidas has the charging infrastructure. There are plenty of charging stations available, so if you don’t get a chance at home, it’s never a problem to plug in here.”
What kind of mobility policy does Accenture have? “Our mobility policy is an integral part of our sustainability strategy. All new leases are fully electric. Thanks in part to our mobility policy, Accenture once more scored the highest level, 5, on the CO2 performance ladder. We have set a worldwide target to get to net zero – zero emissions – by 2025. Added to that, we want our offices to run on 100% renewable energy by no later than 2023. Right now, we’re at 85%. We also require 90% of our main suppliers to publicize their own environmental targets and measures they are taking to cut emissions by 2025. So, we have come a long way, but there is still plenty more to do!”
