ALL THINGS ARE WATER Katya Kochubei
My project is devoted to one of the fundamental elements of the universe which is giving a great reviving power: to the element connected with the life origin on the Earth and the appearance of the human being himself-that is to Water .Water is an image originated from the ancient times in myths and folk tales of all the nations inhabited our planet. The man has always given water lots of magic properties, has always worshipped this powerful and rebellious element. A river used to be not only the source of food and living but the way to the other world, the morrow separated the two worlds. The ocean both opened the shipping routes to other continents and was a kind of cruel and punishing God. Water is everywhere; in fine arts, in music, in religion, in films and in the real life. Water is the source of life and the source of the creative inspiration, it is the bearer of some useful information both in space and in time. The iced waters of glaciers keep the key to to the mysteries of the world creation; the depths of the world ocean conceal a lot of secrets which are hot supposed to be discovered by people. A man has always been attracted by water changeability and by its magical transformations ;liquid ,solid ,vapour .The abilities of water to turn from one state to another, to catch and refract light, to collect information give a vast material for visual, literary and metaphysical research .That is why the theoretical part(the visual lines) is presented as a collage in which the fine arts ,music ,cinema ,literature, architecture and design meet each other in common space ,creating transformed images originated from my individual perception and penetration in the given subject. Three physical water states have become the main source and the starting point making its circle in the world space ;liquid ,solid and vapour .Each of these states has its colour ,its form and its image presented by the pictures of water surface being in different states and water inhabitants. Modern art has added the immersion into the colour ,into the world of feelings and emotions, into the shining light coming from Marc Rothko’s masterpieces which affected me by theirs alluring depth. Modern art has made me think over the question asked by Roni Horn; what can you see while looking at the water? What images are

created with the help play of light and shadow, what secrets do the Thames and Iceland glaciers keep in theirs waters? Working out in the field of modern subject design and architecture allowed me to have a new look at the traditional materials and technologies and to see a lot new there .And, of course ,Madeleine Vionnet and Chistobale Balenciaga’s historical heritage has played an important role in my work. While studying at MA fashion course I would like to create a project bringing together modern technologies and materials, on the one hand, and traditional methods of handwork sewing and making, on the other hand combining and making these opposite surfaces in layering(modern and handicraft ones)I hope to create some unusual images showing the main subject of my project-water ;solid ,liquid ,vapour .My great desire is to connect my further professional activity with the Houte Couture field so I am going to introduce some handicraft technologies in making many elements and details .Having studied the museum archives at MA fashion course I hope to enrich my knowledge in the field and get some useful information and valuable recommendations from the teachers. I am interested in experiments, in the search of new forms and arrangements which can come to life joining new ideas with the reappraisal of the past. I am looking for such combinations which can be called “past and future without either one dominating” .Having divided the project into three chapters-liquid, solid, vapour -in each of them I am planning to reveal different water qualities through colours, forms, shapes, cutting and characteristic water surface features. That is all so far. I am going on collecting materials and making drafts which (I hope so) being supported by the tutorials will develop into a real project. Yours sincerely ,Katya Kochubei.
