campus rain work challenge
strategy background
Strategy One---Site Plan for Rain Water
site analysis
Buildings are stand as a group, and they always have a huge amount of roof area.
More trees
Heavy use pathways are from the two bus stops of the north campus. During class time, most use pathways are from each school to the Duder Center (library). Because of current none reasonable pathway design, lawn and planted slope are been walked to "new pathways".
Collect Rainwater Lawn area near Duder center
Green space on slope
Storage in underground tank
Large percentage of green space are lawn without enough trees; besides, some green space is located on slope, with make the rainwater infiltration not effectively.
Design site---Central Core Area With schools of engineering and science.
Traditional drainage North site is much more higher. The south east corner is the lowest area. Most of the stromwater is flow from surrounding area to the center.

1. Large impervious area including impervious pathway and The rainwater of the paving area and the roof area is directly drain into the inlet without reusing.
Reuse for irrigarion
stairs also make the rainwater accumulation time short. 3. Large percentage of lawn in green space, lacking biodiversity and shade place for people. 4. Rain water directly go in to traditional pipe, without reuse.
-First, we collect all the rain from roof, and store it in an underground water tank, which is under the center lawn area. We also connect each current drainage inlet with this undergroundwater tank to store more rain water. -Second, we clean the rain water with purification system. -Third, the purified rainwater will be used to irrigation and maintain the rain garden. -Fourth, when collecting the rain water from parking lot, we reuse them in a new-built car washing area.
campus rain work challenge
Strategy Two--- Slove slope condition This is the original topography: lots of scattered bushes and grass next to the steps. In order to collect more rainwater in the green area and on the ground, we combine the rainwater garden and topography to create multi-layered system to collect rainwater from wider area. Multi-layered system can not only increase the efficiency of the infiltration, but it also can replace the abrupt slope by several flat area to decrease the soil erosion.
Strategy Three--- Increase biodiversity Most of the planting structure in the site is major lawn. However, the use efficiency of lawn area is incredibly low because students like to spend their time indoor, not under the sun. Besides, the biodiversity is low because the oneness of the ecosystem composition and structure. To solve these problems, we use three models to alter the structure:
1st, For the major lawn area which is not used by people currently, we plant more big trees to increase the understory area, which can increase the cool and shade place for those who do not fond of sunbathing. We use northern red oak, white oak, sycamore, american elm, etc.
2nd, For perennial and herbs dominated area, we add more woody plants. That can enrich the ecosystem composition and complete the ecosystem structure. Trees and shrubs means rich food and habitat for animals and biodiversity. We use white oak, northern red oak, downy service berry, highbush-cranberry, common lilac, flowering dogwood, etc. The steps in the site are sorted into two kinds: either under or above 10 steps, because we can make diverse alteration with the topography upon different altitude difference. We come up with two strategies to respectively adapt the two kinds of altitude differences: Most schools in this area are engineering and science. Students usually spend most of their time in labs and computer rooms rather than to go out to and have any outdoor activities. Actually, engineering students do have romantic hearts while they have strongly logical minds and rational thinking. We are trying to combine the romance and rationality into the landscape to make this site full of possibilities. To make the garden more playful and to draw people's attention to here to see what we are doing, we add some "engineering" elements into the rainwater gardens like the "gear" and the "machine". We are placing some gearlike waterwheel in the rainwater garden and using some mechanism to move it when there is water in it. It would be romantic. Besides, there will be some introduction words curved on the gear and other "engineering" elements so that people can understand more about the garden by reading the introduction.
3rd, Rain gardens also increases the habitat and water area, which would attract more animals especially wild bird. It was saying there are plenty of birds on North Campus because the forest area is big and the water resource is not sufficient. Therefore, the animals would make the site a more natural and romantic space to stay when there is birding singing and squirrels running. We use lake sedge, prairie blazing star, etc.
underground water tank
Strategy Four--- Romance in rational center plaza with funnel rain water collector
The car-wash system: We collect extra water in a tank underground when the rain garden cannot absorb such amount of water. Then, we build an automatic drive-through car washer in the parking lot in which students and stuff can wash their cars by using their campus card or coins. The main water for the car washing is from the underground tank after necessary sedimentation and other processes. This can avoid wasting cast of water to the drainage. Plus, this can benefit people in a sustainable way.
We choose a small site in the area to do the detail design. A rectangle pond in the middle is surrounded by several building-attached green areas. There are several footsteps and slope here because the topography is like a kettle. The pond in the middle is the lowest plane and the surrounded buildings are built on the slope. The current landscapes are simple and are mostly without careful handling with the topography. We plan to change some steep slope into multi-layered rain garden and some low spots into common rain

garden to collect water instead of letting
natural style rain garden rainwater flower direction and gather area
Funnel feature rainwater collection In this design, we set funnel shape rainwater collection in the center of plaza. When raining, it working as a rain water collector, which will help transport rain water to the underground pipe it also displays to people the first step to collect rain water. When there is no rain, it is a land mark also a shelter to give shade for students.

Elevation analysis of the flooding
THE PHYSIC PERSPECTIVE The followinpicture is the bird’s -eye view of the riverside after flooding. in this condition, all the boxes are floating, and they are well-knit forming the floating riverside. However the previous stairs have been submerged. Assume F is the symbol for buoyancy force, ρ is the density of water 1kg/L, g is the gravitational acceleration 10N/g. V is the volume of water excluded by the floating box. Assume the man and square with the area 0.36m^2(0.6×0.6); the total weight of the man and the box is 100kg, and the other things like plants weight 100kg either. To assume the safety of man, the box has to guarantee the buoyance force between 1000N and 2000N. And thus, Vmin=1000/ (1000×10)=0.1m^2; Vmax=2000/(1000×10)=0.2m^2; Hmin=Vmin/S=0.1/(0.6×0.6)=0.28m; Hmax=Vmax/S=0.2/(0.6×0.6)=0.56m. In sum, the height of sinking is between 0.28-0.56m, which means the height of the box has to between 0.28-0.56m.

In design process, the connecting part of two adjacent tanks adopted two rollers, which reduces the floating resistance force and makes the process of floating up more stable and more smooth. In all the connecting part, clearance is taken into consideration to avoid the situation that the connecting components are broken due to the pulling stress caused by waves. The rendering of four tanks is showed in following picture.
