In 1986 she was appointed president of the Fédération Équestre Internationale, the international governing body of equestrian sports, a position she held for eight years. then in 1971 she won the European Eventing Championships becoming the first British Royal Family member to win a European title. However, it is in 2016 that Anne was awarded the Longines Ladies Award for her lifelong achievement at the highest level of equestrian sport.

“For many children, the sport they do is because that is the one that was most available to them.” Anne is one of the busiest royals, as patron to over 300 charities, organisations and military regiments in the UK and overseas. Now 70 years of age she devotes much of her working life to official engagements and visits. She has officially represented the monarchy since she was 18 years of age. Her work is varied across areas which include children, poverty, logistics, women, health, carers, education, sport, animal welfare, and the British Army.

She has help create several international charities including the Carers Trust which provides support to individuals who care for someone, and Transaid and Riders for Health which both aim to overcome poor transportation links in developing countries. Among her many leadership roles are president of Save the Children from 1970 to 2017, British representative in the International Olympic Committee, Chancellor of the University of London, and Royal Patron of Women in Science and Engineering. 38 | Hepburn
