This collection is based on the «Narodna Viyna» travelling exhibition of banners developed by the researchers of the Vasyl Stus Kyiv Memorial Society. They spent 2008 and 2009 working in the central national archives and regional archives in 18 of Ukraine’s 25 oblasts (provinces). More than 350 archival fonds were consulted and nearly 1,500 individual cases were digitized. The exhibit consists of more than 300 photographs, many shown for the first time.
There is a website version of the exhibit, created with the support of the Nasha Ukraina («Our Ukraine») political party; it is being supplemented by new materials and documents as they become available. Researchers from the Vasyl Stus Kyiv Memorial Society and the Civic Institute of Historical Memory published a narrative version of the exhibit, which is an expanded guidebook called a «putivnyk». Russian and English language translations are available.
