what we pass on to future generations”. According to Taylor (1871) culture is defined as knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society. Culture forms everyday lives of the people. The colourful cultures are evident in not only the music, dances, games, the many art forms and past times, but also in the values, beliefs and norms (Zuraidah, 2007). The importance of culture in society has grown immensely during the twentieth century. The diversity of cultures and heritage is an irreplaceable source of spiritual and intellectual richness for all civilisations. According to Liew (2005), culture provides links between the past, present and the future; cultural information can bring communities together as well as promote understanding among a culture and society. Archives, libraries and museums are manifestation of cultural institutions. Dempsey (2000) regards these institutions as “memory institutions”

because their collections contain the memory of peoples, communities, institutions and individuals, scientific and cultural heritage, and products throughout time of imagination, craft and learning. Allen and Bishoff (2002) also regard the library, museum, archives and historical societies as cultural
heritage organisations which have some commonality of
purpose through their collections and programmes. These institutions provide their respective communities with scientific, creative and cultural heritage resources.
