Delegates from Kementerian Agama Badan Litbang & Diklat, Indonesia University Brunei Darussalam Library received a visit from a group of researchers from Center of Research and Development, Ministry of Religious Affairs Badan Litbang dan Diklat, Indonesia on the 21st December 2015. Welcoming the delegates was Ahmad Safwan, Acting Assistant Chief Librarian and Amalina, Acting Head of Promotion. The delegates were then shown around the Library and later visited Brunei Studies Collection which is the main focus area for this visit. They were welcomed by Awang Amirul Shahezal, Head of Brunei Studies. The purpose of the visit is specifically to do some research on Islamic Manuscript preservation in the archipelago. Also to explore potential collaborative between UBD Library and Ministry of Religious Affairs of Litbang and Diklat. Their objectives of research are to: 

Explore the manuscripts and experiences including government policies in the way of how to manage manuscripts in relation to preserving them

Identify/invent any information of manuscripts’ data

Classify or categorize the manuscripts

Preserve/conserve the manuscripts by producing catalogue through thesaurus data which is already online

Build cooperation and network among the institutions on the field of religious literature and heritage

The delegates also met with the Chief Librarian on the second day of their visit. The visit was concluded with the delegates donating some books to add up into UBD Library’s collection to Dr Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Abdul Karim, Chief Librarian.

UBD Librarians attended IGroup conference in Chengdu, China Access Dunia Sdn Bhd invited Ahmad Safwan & Amirul Shahezal, Librarians from Universiti Brunei Darussalam Library to attend 7th iGroup China Online Conference which was held in Emei Xuanya Hotel, Chengdu China on 9th– 14th November 2015. The conference is designed as on-going learning and skills upgrading opportunities for librarian. It was attended by Library professional from ASEAN & China.

Library activities and events Book Donation from Dr Gibril Fouad Haddad. Books Donation from Dr Gibril Fouad Haddad, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Centre of Islamic Studies (SOASCIS) to Universiti Brunei Darussalam Library. The donation was handed over to Associate Professor Dr. Mohammad Ayub Sadiq @ Lin Naing, Assistant Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) with the presence of Dayang Rubiah binti Haji Yacub, Assistant Vice Chancellor (Corporate and Administration) and Dr Haji Awang Suhaimi bin Haji Abdul Karim, Chief Librarian.

Visit from University of St. La Salle (USLS), Phillippines UBD Graduate student, Isaac Abekah Koomson led the University of St. La Salle (USLS) tour to The Business Library on 28th November 2015 and welcomed by Amalina binti Awang Haji Ahmad, Assistant Library Officer Most of the delegates have the background in Business, Economic and Finance. The objective of having this tour is to explore potential collaborative activities between UBD and University of St. La Salle (USLS), Philippines.

Visit by Sekolah Menengah Muda Hashim, Tutong Sekolah Menengah Muda Hashim, Tutong visited the University Library with 100 students with 10 teachers. The visit was organized by Department of English Language Division. Their visit to the Library was as part of the tour to some faculties in Universiti Brunei Darussalam to encourage student’s interest to pursue their studies at the higher institution level. The purpose of visiting the Library were to inculcate a love of reading habits of the students, to see the collections and facilities of the Library.

Springer Crossword prize giving ceremony Springer Crossword prize ceremony was held on Thursday 29th October at the University Library. The ceremony was attended by Dr Haji Awang Suhaimi bin Haji Abdul Karim, Chief Librarian, Assistant Chief Librarian, Head of Divisions and library officers and staff. The Chief Librarian also presented the prizes to all of the winners. University Library thanked to Springer for organizing and sponsoring such an inspiring quiz with an overwhelming participation of students and staff. This is the third time Springer has organized the quiz and hope the users will be aware and active of using the eResources wisely for their research.

Workshop on a Great Paper and Getting it Published in a Research This workshop “Writing a great paper and getting it published in a research paper” was held on 26th November 2015 and organized by the Serials Division at The Business Library. It was successfully held with more than 50 participants from lecturers, researchers and postgraduate students from various faculties in UBD. The facilitator of the workshop Ms Charon Estelle Duermeijer, Publishing Director-Physics, Elsevier covered on few techniques on using keyword search engines for the articles: 

Steps needed before writing a paper,

Using citation database to evaluate journals, authors and collaborators,

How to ensure that users are using proper manuscript language,

Building up the article properly,

Author’s responsibilities & rights.

Library activities and events Delegates from Universitas Darussalam (UNIDA), Gontor, Indonesia The Library received visitors from Universitas Darussalam (UNIDA), Gontor, Indonesia on 15 October 2015. Two lecturers, Mr K.H. Heru Saiful Anwar (as Head of Delegation) and Mr Mohammad Ismail with 43 students were from Faculty of Tarbiyah of Arabic Language Teaching and Faculty of Islamic Education, were on a working visit to Brunei Darussalam and their visit to Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) was hosted by Faculty of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education, (SHBIE) UBD. Working visit from Delegates of The Thailand Library Association The Thailand Library Association delegations headed by Associate Professor Dr. Tassana Hanpol, .Sukhothaithammathirat Open University consisting of twenty-one members of librarians from secondary and technical schools, academicians, public librarians and the executive members of the association visited the Universiti Brunei Darussalam Library on the 6th October 2015. They were visiting the Library as part of their itinerary four-day visit to Brunei Darussalam being hosted by Brunei Darussalam Library Association. Dr. Haji Awang Suhaimi bin Haji Abdul Karim, Chief Librarian made a welcome remarks and highlight issues of continuous professional collaboration and network among the library profession. With this visit it will benefit the librarians for both countries and future development in gaining experiences and knowledge transfer in library profession.

Visit from 23rd Executive Development Programme for Middle Management Officers (EDPMMO) 25 senior officers of the 23rd EDPMMO attended short courses in Universiti Brunei Darussalam. As to start their course in UBD, they were brought to UBD Library for briefing on the role of the library in learning and the importance of adhering to the rules and regulations of the library services. They were welcomed and briefed by Hajah Norleha binti Haji Mat Yassin at the Yasib Room, Ground Level.

All registered users I.Ds and passwords to access the electronic resources and their library account

What is eReference? Electronic Reference is the digital version of the printed reference collection which contains full -text of articles as well as the bibliographic records which can be accessed locally or remotely via computer networks. The users can get accessed to these resources 24/7 a week. eReference @ UBD which are available through the DiLibraryUBD Portal includes subscribed online dictionaries, encyclopedias, biographies, etc.
