These are only a few of the many available, and we are here to help you find a role to suit you. This month we celebrate Volunteers Week. Volunteers’ Week is about celebrating the huge range of people who give their time in so many ways. From trustees and campaigners to carers and fundraisers, gardeners and event supporters, guides and scouts leaders, befrienders and walk leaders. Many people volunteer in a huge variety of ways, this is a great time to think about the fantastic contribution that volunteers make to all our lives across the borough of Fareham.

Summer Library Reading Challenge Every year the Summer Reading Challenge engages thousands of children in reading over the long break from school. The library services are particularly looking for young volunteers who can help enhance the experience for children and families participating in the Challenge during the busy summer period.

Volunteers have the opportunity to develop fantastic new skills and gain experience for their CVs. Typical Summer Reading Challenge Volunteer tasks include:  Helping staff to sign children up to the Summer Reading Challenge  Helping children to choose new books  Talking to children about the books they've been reading  Giving out incentive items and certificates as children progress through the Challenge  Helping to promote and lead summer activities such as craft sessions, story-times and coding clubs  Helping to create in-library displays  Planning and running celebration

events for other young volunteers The libraries are particularly looking for volunteers aged 14-18, but volunteers of all ages are very welcome. Times and locations are flexible.

Gardening & DIY Abbeyfield Fareham The Abbeyfield Fareham Society is an independent voluntary organisation. It was formed in 1964 to provide accommodation for active retired people who did not want to live on their own, but preferred to maintain their independence by living in a small community with some basic services provided.

Abbeyfield is very fortunate to have beautiful gardens for the residents and guests to enjoy all year round. They are matured for ease but still need some level of care. Duties include light weeding of beds, trimming and pruning, watering in the summer and similar duties. Only a few hours here and there are needed and you would be joining a great team and be supporting a valuable residence in Fareham town centre.

Abbeyfield is also looking for a Maintenance Volunteer in Fareham. Do you like all aspects of maintenance? DIY? A maintenance volunteer for Abbeyfield will need to have good people skills, like a natter and also be keen to work on various tasks such as putting up shelves, touching up paintwork and much more. If you’ve got some DIY experience then please get in touch.

No qualifications are needed as full training and an induction is given before you are supported to meet and greet clients. This is a great role if you’d like the chance to work with amazing people and make a genuine impact on someone’s day.

Highlands Hub Helper Saturday Highlands Hub is a Community Cafe offering all visitors a welcome. It’s a friendly environment with drinks and snacks. No two days are the same with computers online for community use and various clubs/groups/drop-ins using the space.

They are a fun group of people doing various tasks to support the community, such as raising money through activities and increasing awareness of the hub and much more.

This role would suit someone who likes being part of a friendly team of people. If you like a chat and enjoy a cuppa then you're an ideal person for helping at the hub. Volunteers serve tea/coffee/snacks and a offer a friendly face.

Duties and days are flexible depending on your interests and availability. They particularly need someone on Saturdays at the moment. The Hub is located within the parade of shops on Highlands Road. At present opening hours are Tuesday to Friday 9am-4pm and Saturday 10am-1pm. The Hub is fully accessible with free parking close by.

My Time Volunteer—YOU Trust The aim of the My Time service is to enable carers to have time for themselves and take a break from their caring role. Volunteers are matched with the carer and cared for person based on shared interests and location. Many of the people being cared for will have communication difficulties due to dementia or physical impairments, but will not need any support with personal care. You can create a highlight to someone's week by getting out for some fresh air, reading the paper or taking a trip down memory lane. Do you have a genuine interest in getting to know people in the community? Are you sensitive to people's needs and care for their wellbeing with a supportive Volunteering Matters Page 2

Trustees Needed Trustees are needed for local charities and organisations in the area. Organisations such as Abbeyfield, Open Sight, Marvels and Meltdowns, AFFECT, Bursledon Brickworks, Communicare Locks Heath and local community centres.

Trustees have overall control of an organisation and are responsible for making sure it’s doing what it was set up to do. They may be known by other titles, such as directors, board members, governors, committee members.

Whatever they are called, trustees are the people who lead the charity and decide how it is run.

Depending on what the charity does, you will be making a difference to your local community or to society as a whole.

Trustees use their skills and experience, maybe from business, law, HR, marketing, building management, medical or social care and so on to support their charities, helping them achieve their aims. Trustees also often learn new skills during their time on the board. Most trustee meetings are in the evenings after normal working hours. These roles would suit someone working in a professional role wanting to make a difference to their local community.

Our local community centres are particularly needing trustees, could you use your skills to support the community centre near you?

Cats Protection Cats Protection helps unwanted and abandoned felines, rehabilitating and rehoming them where possible; they also seek to alleviate the problem of unwanted cats, by offering information and advice about responsible cat ownership and heavily promoting neutering.

Cat Taxi Cats Protection is often in need of assistance transporting cats. Most journeys are to and from the vets or to a new home. Every now and then you might be asked to drive to more unusual locations. Could you spare a little time, occasionally at short notice? Mileage is paid.

There are two team meeting a year which volunteers are asked to attend.

Cat Fosterer Could you take a cat into your home until a new home can be found? All expenses are paid. Your cat experience, and Cats Protection’s support, should ensure that cats are re-homed quickly.

Some cats need to be nurtured, to build their confidence, before a new home can be found. All fosterers will be visited to assess your home, garden etc. Training is provided and all expenses are paid.

Cats Protection Outreach and Awareness Do you like cats but only have a few hours a month to spare? Maybe you could volunteer to tell people about Cats Protection. This would involve talking to lots of people and ensuring they understand the valuable work. Cats Protection never puts a cat down, so they are always needing to raise awareness of their work, to find cat fosterers and generate support.

Can you talk to anyone? Do you enjoy meeting new people? Do you love cats? Then this role could be for you. Events are only 4 or 5 times a year.

Railway Volunteer The Brickworks Museum is looking to add to the volunteer team for running the site railway/s on Event days. This role would suit someone who knows nothing at all about railways as they'll be with longstanding, experienced volunteers. At the moment it will mainly be one Sunday a month for Event days but if you’re keen, there is the chance to come in during the week, probably a Tuesday or Thursday, for maintenance work.

The Brickworks is a volunteer run museum located by the river Hamble. It is a unique site and the only remaining steam driven brickworks left in the country. The museum is open 3 days a week from April to October, with a big Event day a month and regular group and school visits.

This role would suit someone who is free one Sunday a month who wants to learn how to run a miniature or narrow gauge railway. This is a reasonably physical role, potential volunteers will need to be able stand.

Catisfield Memorial Hall Founded in 1946, the Hall was built on land donated to the community by a resident of Catisfield, in memory of villagers (including his own son) who gave their lives during the Second World War. It is a friendly facility close to Fareham. The Hall is ideal for events, parties, meetings and other activities.

Caretaker Volunteer Catisfield Memorial Hall is looking for a volunteer who would be involved and responsible for all manner of projects related to the use of a local hall; tasks such as: light decorating, repairs, checks, cleaning windows, gutters and soffits. Also keeping an eye on equipment and supplies as well ensuring the hall and grounds are safe and secure for users.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is keen to be involved with a community group, which is not only proud of the hall and its possibilities, but is also keen to combat loneliness and encourage a diversity of users of all ages to come and use the facilities. You would need excellent DIY skills and tools, a good eye for detail and the ability to make repairs within a budget.

Management Group Member Catisfield Memorial Hall is seeking volunteers to join the CMH management group. Initially as associate members helping at the Hall and possibly going onto be Trustees if you wish. This role would suit a committed person, willing to give some time to keep this important community facility running.

Hovercraft Museum The Hovercraft Museum is a working museum and is constantly restoring, preserving and maintaining the craft in their care. The engineering hangar is open to visitors to see the craft being worked on and many of the craft can be boarded and experienced first hand!

The Hovercraft Museum is open every Saturday from 10am until 4pm and is looking for volunteers in a variety of roles who are able to work a morning or afternoon each Saturday. Do you like meeting new people and making new friends? The Shop CafÊ & Ticket office role could be for you. Maybe you’d like to train to be a museum guide or to do some archiving? Volunteers are also needed to help with site maintenance.
