A Cautionary Tale

The business expanded and they bought bigger premises with the help of a loan from their bank. A little Then disaster struck. Bill had a heart bit different this attack and died whilst out on the golf month. I want to course. tell you a story, are you sitting Ted still owned half the comfortably? business and Bill had an old will This is the tale from years before which left of William and everything to his wife Pat and that Edward. Two now included half the company. But really good Pat had never worked in the friends who met while working business and certainly didn’t have together at Bodgit Engineering but Bill’s technical knowledge so she both of them had a dream of one day couldn’t take on his role. being their own boss and setting up Ted was faced with recruiting a their own business. replacement for Bill to take up his role in the company and that person So one day after bad day in wouldn’t come cheap either to recruit the office they went to the pub and or pay. talked it through over a few pints and resolved to set up a business Pat also needed an income together. A few months later they for her and the family so Ted felt an resigned and set up Big Idea Limited. obligation to continue to pay her dividends on the shares but that Bill brought his technical would put more pressure on the knowledge and Ted his industry and business cash flow and profits. Of client contacts so they were a good course he could try and buy Bill’s fit and everything was split down the shares from Pat but the accountant middle 50:50. told him that would cost up to £500,000, money the business To start with it was hard work simply didn’t have. but they put in the hours invested back into the business and slowly built a strong a profitable company with healthy turnover, strong profits and a good customer base. They started to enjoy the fruits of their labour with better salaries and dividends allowing them to have better cars, nice holidays etc. nothing flash but a fair reward for their efforts.

Written By… See advert On Page 14 www.b2b1st.co.uk

In the meantime the bank changed it’s attitude, they were worried that with one of the business owners gone the ability to make the loan repayments would be squeezed. The chance of asking them for more money to pay out Pat was nil. The sad fact is this could all have been easily avoided. If you see yourself in Bill and Teds place then some simple planning could make sure the right monies are available to the right people at the right time. Funds to give extra cash to the business when they needed it following Bills death, monies to allow Ted to buy out Pat and give him control of the business and Pat the funds to support herself and the family Funds to repay the bank loan and reduce the pressure of the repayments on the cash flow.

I.T. FiX iT Microsoft Ends Support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014! So you are now no longer SAFE!

Some people say that this is a cynical ploy to force you to upgrade your computer systems. Some say that it is reasonable to retire an operating system that is twelve years old, very old in the world of computers. What does it mean for home and business users? No more security updates, bug fixes, driver updates and so on, all of that disappears on April 8, 2014, which poses potential risks for businesses and individuals who plan to stick with XP beyond that date. This means that after that date Microsoft will no longer develop or release security or other updates for Windows XP that guard against viruses, spyware and, intrusion by hackers. You have been warned. With less than seven months from XP's retirement worldwide, one in three PCs still run the stable operating system (OS), give or take. OS usage statistics tend to vary based on a variety of factors. Microsoft estimates around 30% of its small and midsize enterprise (SME) customers still use XP; recent market share data from Net Applications said XP accounts for 37% of PCs around the world. These aren't exactly small numbers. XP has a been a great success, so much so that its

Then sit back and I’ll do the rest I’ll then go out to tender with all the UK’s suppliers and with our huge buying power I’ll get you a very good deal and I’ll automate the process each contract period. A price comparison website won’t do this. On top of that a price comparison website will not have our buying power. We negotiate for you. All too often price comparison websites get you a really cheap deal for a year or so and inevitably the business owner forgets to cancel the contract, they roll them over and make their money back. Most business owners do not have the time to do this so why not outsource to an expert?

“The Storage Expert”

As most businesses we are always conscious about the impact we have on the local community and try and help in any way that we can. Throughout the year we try and get involved in local charity events as well as offering discounted storage to a number of charities as we can appreciate that any money that they save will benefit local charities. If you know any charities that would benefit from discounted charity storage or if you want more information on storage then if you could get them to contact Sarah Travis at: 61-79 West Bar, S3 8PS, 0114 2706377 or Richard Talbot at: 8 Parkway Avenue, S 9 4WA, 0114 2720988. All the units at the Armadillo stores are separate and you have your own lock on the door as well as having 24 hour CCTV to ensure that your items are always secure. We only charge you for the space that you need and then you can access your unit anytime during the hours of 8am-6pm Monday-Friday or 9am-6pm Saturdays. We also sell different packaging materials including house moving packaging packs for your convenience. If you need boxes then pop into one of our stores by the end of June and we will give you just mention 1stMags or if you enquire about storage then we will give you . At the moment we have 3 charities that are benefiting in our West Bar store from discounted storage so we thought we would introduce them to you to see if there is anything that you can do to help their cause:

bedsits and in shared housing throughout the city. Roundabout also offers young people a comprehensive programme of training and involvement which breaks the cycle of homelessness and develops long term independent living skills. Due to having so many properties, and young people moving in and out frequently, we rely on Armadillo who kindly donate storage to ensure furniture can be kept for when we need it. This allows us to keep our costs to a minimum and ensure as much money as possible is raised for the charity and goes towards helping our beneficiaries. If you are interested in volunteering for the charity or finding out more information then please visit:

www.roundabouthomeless.org

Everyone at Armadillo has been extremely generous and helpful in their support of Macmillan. The storage space is essential for the charity. It means our local team of fundraisers has easy and immediate access to the resources needed to help our supporters with their fundraising. The staff are friendly and approachable and really go the extra mile for us, whether it be; helping us network with other companies, volunteering and they are even planning to raise funds by taking part in a Zip Wire Challenge off the top of the Manchester Imperial War Museum! This all means more money Roundabout is can go to support people affected by cancer in the local area. If you would Sheffield's local like to support Macmillan in some way, youth housing then please get in touch on 07545 419 charity, and provides shelter, support and life skills to homeless young people. 725 or visit our volunteering page: We provide accommodation at our www.macmillan.org.uk/getinvol emergency hostel and support young ved people to live independently in secure

Sheffieldr supports those who want to make their communities better places for young people by providing activities and things to do. Sheffieldr helps with everything from finding volunteers or sourcing local venues to hold activities and even providing equipment. Armadillo Storage allows us to cheaply store equipment like tents, instruments, DJ decks, bikes and more, which we loan to youth groups for only £1 per week. This gives young people in Sheffield the opportunity to try new things without youth clubs investing in equipment. We currently have a ‘Spring Things To Do Guide’ online for activities and events for young people here: www.sheffieldr.co.uk/thingstodo If you think that you could help by donating equipment or if you want to volunteer then we are looking for professionals to become charity trustees as well as taking on roles in project management. We have a range of opportunities and lots more information on our website:

Informal Mediation in the Workplace protecting people from attack or abuse. The “mediator” will take responsibility for applying problem solving skills such as summarising, brainstorming, speaking to issues and interest and ensuring there are regular reality checks. The purpose of all this effort will be to arrive as quickly as possible at some sort of exchange of promises relating to future events or actions even where there is no agreement to sign.

People mediate solutions in all kinds of every day settings without even realising what they are a part of. Some experiences are in response to something immediate and provoke a “think on your feet” kind of reaction. Others are more drawn out leading to the informal mediator acting as go between before parties agree to speak. Quad Computer Services Having a reliable, robust IT system is a fundamental part of most organisations’ day-to-day workflow. Quad Computer Services Ltd work closely with their clients to ensure problems are avoided by monitoring and advising as systems evolve. They speak a language that everyone can understand, translating fluently from technical jargon to plain English. This enables every one to make good decisions based on a proper understanding of all the information. Quad’s flexibility also allows their clients to be flexible as requirements change. As we all know, the only thing guaranteed in business is change. Quad are also happy to liaise with other third parties to ensure that IT needs are met, where in-house expertise may be lacking or require further support and experience. What happens if things go wrong? IT infrastructure is essential to most businesses, so you need to make sure you have the correct practices and safeguards in place should part of that infrastructure fail. You need the hardware and software which will provide the best resilience for your requirements. Quad can provide a solution that best fits your

organisation and your budget. Using the latest technology, they are able to monitor your system remotely and often fix problems without having to perform a site visit. We can also perform preventative maintenance so that everything continues to run smoothly and reduces the risk of failure. Having a support contract in place will ensure peace of mind knowing that your problem will be evaluated and reviewed within an agreed timescale. What would happen if your PC or server stopped working? Are all your important documents backed-up? Are you 100% sure they can be recovered from the last backup you took? When did you last test it? How quickly do you need to be up and running? Can you get PCs, servers and your network up and running within a timescale that fits your business? Too often, action is only taken after a failure of a piece of hardware. By then, it is too late. No suitable backup strategy is in place and no contingency for hardware has been considered. Quad are frequently called to businesses that have lost months of work (and sometimes everything) because their plan was implemented but never tested. Check what you have in place today, as tomorrow you might need to implement it. A common oversight is that organisations do not have backups off

site. Whilst the office building smoulders, and the fire brigade tell you it will be a week until you can safely get to your fire safe, you’ll wish you had a backup tape stored sa fely at a comp any like Quad.

Adam Quad, understand that different organisations have different requirements when it comes to support. Quad have years of experience and many sites installed, so we can tailor a solution to suit you.

Ian Thanks

Judge Jane removal of taxation and inflation. The initial impact of the recession did not stop the rise in RAHDI levels but, the imposition of austerity has resulted in it reversing rapidly and particularly during 2013 when it fell significantly. During the same period the Office for National Statistic (ONS) reported that household wealth also rose in the period 2007 – 2012 but, this is revealing the contradictory consequences of government policy.

JJane At some point in 2014 GDP will finally recover its pre recession peak almost six years after the longest and deepest slump since the Great Depression of the 30’s. Many have suffered but, small and medium business has borne the brunt of the slowest recovery in living memory. Of concern for continued future growth is the fact that as the economy advances at a moderate rate there is no equivalent rise in living standards for the bulk of the population. This means only a small minority are receiving a benefit from the rise in output responsible for generating this growth. A clearer picture of the reality for most is evident if we refer to the activity shown in measurements of RAHDI (Real Adjusted Household Disposable Income) - figures which take into account the total net income of households after the

will once again cease – causing further stagnation. Cutting business taxation and subsidising the loss to the Treasury of that income through cuts to public spending and a rise in VAT has not produced the promised rewards in the form of a reduced deficit or a growth in personal wealth for those of who find ourselves labelled as “hard working families”.

In an effort to balance the impact of austerity on GDP the government is attempting to artificially increase the value of household wealth by inflating the stock market and by implication share values and house prices which are the measurements used. Evidence of support for this is visible in such initiatives as the controversial “Help to Buy” scheme.

Small business and the communities we serve are desperate for a serious and sustainable approach to economic recovery. With no sign of any such commitments from government or opposition we must ensure to manage our commercial and financial relationships ever more carefully and consider our options accordingly. Most importantly we must make more effort to Because consumption is not an understand the gap between fact “input” to growth it cannot “lead” its and fiction in the “good news” development. Economic growth is reports in the media. a function of the amount and quality of the capital and labour deployed in the economy as well as some contribution from technological change. Until and unless jjjustmyopinion@gmail.com investment values rise and are able to generate more capital for the purpose of expanding capacity in the economy this continued fall in living standards and disposable income will continue. Sooner or later lenders will begin to notice movement toward another household debt crisis and lending

Health & Fitness As seen in the Sheffield Star, Daily Star, Yorkshire post, BBC Radio Sheffield and Real Radio Yorkshire If you look around you, you’ll see more and more overweight people. Have you ever thought how this could impact your business? Over the next 3 months I detail the frightening horror facing all business owners. Ignore this 3 part series at your peril and tell your friends who are business owners. due to obesity related diseases. Consider this- how much time will your employees with obese kids take off work due to childhood illness? Are you going to ask this at interview? Will you dare tell your employees to keep themselves and their families healthy? Would you dare risk sacking for being overweight? Are you in good health? All too often I see people who tell me they eat healthily and they don’t. If you or your employees are obese and in poor health I can assure you that your productivity in all aspects of life will suffer. That will impact your profit margin. What image will you portray to

your customers? When I worked at one gym our membership services manager was heavily overweight, although it was never officially recorded I can assure you that when she was on the front of house the number of new sign ups fell. Is that why they removed her from front of house? When I was a medical student I frequently heard doctors tell patients to lose weight- what did they do themselves? Consider the doctor who told a patient to stop smoking, lose weight and stop drinking. He had a pint in one hand, a cigarette in the other, he was 12 stone overweight and was telling this to the patient.

to do her job. What could the employer do? Do they sack her and risk being sued for unfair dismissal on health grounds, find her alternative employment or pay for rehabilitation? If you pay for rehabilitation what do you say to your fit employee who funds their own personal trainer? Will you dare make your employees have a work medical every year?

Will your employee’s obesity incur extra costs for you? Consider the heavily overweight lady whose employer had to buy a heavy duty chair for her to sit in. The problem here is that the employer could not Very recently the afford it but she was so specialised case of midwife hit she was irreplaceable. Could you . Movie Previews The weather may be starting to pick up and we have longer days so here’s what is coming up at the cinema this month…

Coming Soon…

Noah

Even those who aren’t especially religious know the tale of Noah and his ark. We’re taught about it at school about how Noah was asked by God to build an ark as there was going to be 40 days and 40 nights of rain so the world would be flooded. It’s also been depicted a few times, most notable in the 2007 comedy sequel Evan Almighty. This version though has more of a serious edge to it though, and a much bigger budget too. The story shows ) is how Noah ( contacted by God and he knows what He plans to do. As it comes from director Darren Aronofsky, ( ) there is more to the story

than a man building an ark. There’s an appearance from Ray ) Winstone ( as a group leader hoping to take control of the ark Noah has built. The film also stars Emma Watson ( ) and Jennifer Connolly ). ( Although the subject matter may not be what gets some people to the cinema, big stars and even bigger set designs and effects should make the epic worth a watch.

The Love Punch Next is a British comedy starring the effortless Emma Thompson ( ) and suave Bond himself Pierce Brosnan ( ). They play divorced couple Kate and Richard who must work together when their whole retirement plan is taken from them when the head of the company swindles them out of it.

They conspire to find the man responsible and make him pay. This takes them to Paris where the man is getting married and with the help of some friends ( ) they are going to steal a rather large diamond from Richard’s boss’s fiancé. Sure to be tonnes of fun this is one that’s not to be missed.

Rio 2 Starring: Anne Hathaway, Andy Garcia, Leslie Mann, Rodrigo Santoro, Jesse Eisenberg, Jamie Foxx, Kristin Chenoweth, Tracey Morgan, Rita Moreno, Bruno Mars, will.i.am City bird Blu finds himself hilariously out of his depth during an Amazon adventure in this colourful sequel. Having secured the future of their species, formerly flightless pet macaw Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) and the lovely Jewel (Anne Hathaway) are raising their young family in Rio. But then they learn of an amazing discovery in the Amazon jungle. It seems they weren't the last blue macaws after all. So Jewel cajoles domesticated

homebody Blu into embarking on a voyage of discovery in the wild. Along the way, they find her gruff dad Eduardo (Andy Garcia) and hunky, crooning childhood friend Roberto (Bruno Mars)! Little wonder our poor hero is feeling rather inadequate. But you can be sure he'll prove himself once again. All the old gang are back for this high-flying sequel to the hit animation. They're joined by great new characters voiced by Andy Garcia, Rita Moreno, Bruno Mars, Kristin Chenoweth and will.i.am.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 This is one blockbuster sequel that has been highly anticipated ever since it’s planned release. After the success with the first, which was a remake itself, the sequel is sure to be bigger and many hope, better than the first. We left the story as Peter Parker ( ) had defeated The Lizard and promised Gwen Stacy’s ) father he would protect ( her, this resulting in Peter deciding to keep his distance. Now we not only see that this was impossible for him to do but he has some new foes he has to defeat. Peter is still struggling with keeping the balance in his life, the ordinary life and troubles of high school and the responsibilities he faces as Spider-Man. The one thing he can’t let go of is the mystery surrounding the disappearance of his father. As he digs deeper into his past, he

John’s Plants As light levels increase and the soil begins to warm up, so does the growth of all plants and weeds, Keeping weeds under control is of upmost importance annual weeds can be hand picked or hoed on a dry day , because left to go to seed they will multiply in their thousands. Perennial weeds can be treated with a propriety herbicide or dug out. It is an ideal time to feed your plants in borders and pots this will give them a boost and supply essential nutrients for healthy growth, healthy plants are less likely to suffer from attacks from pests and diseases and perform well.

Don’t be tempted to buy or put out tender bedding until much later, in this area mid to late May is ideal, and even then be prepared to cover it if necessary. Deadhead daffodils and narcissi; give them a liquid feed high in potash or a sprinkling of bonemeal and then let them die down naturally, Don’t cut off the leaves as they are necessary to replenish the bulb for next year. Keep deadheading spring bedding to keep it looking its best and to encourage new flowers.

Continue with your spring cleaning. Mulch plant that need moisture by using compost before the herbaceous growth really takes off. Carry on removing moss and weeds from paths, terraces Beware of late frosts and keep vulnerable plants and new shoots and drives. protected at night if frost is Make new beds and borders forecast.
