ISA SEASON
You can put your money into an ISA from the 6th of April each year so why is March labelled ISA season by the press. Surely ISA season should be the start of the tax year not the end otherwise you miss out on 11 months of tax efficient investing. Yes if you haven’t done your ISA yet and you have the funds then get it sorted but far better to do next years in April rather than leave it to the last few days. There are other tax allowances also available to savers and investors and if you want to know more about these and ISA’s or just to review your existing holdings to make sure they are invested correctly and efficiently for your needs and requirements then speak to an Independent Financial Adviser who can source the best solutions for you from the whole of the market.

Health & Fitness Very recently there have been a huge number of TV programmes about the overweight and those considering weight loss surgery. Some of them have been very moving. I defy anyone to watch them and not be moved. I am often told some horrible things from the public and its very worrying. Before you make any such comments please read this and then think again. The way I see the plight of the obese person is easily explained. Imagine you are at an airport with two 20kg suitcases and you have to walk to the check in desk with them. If you are at an airport you can either get someone to help you or you can get a trolley. Now imagine if your suitcases weighed not 20kg but 80kg (each) and there was nobody to help you and there was no trolley. Imagine if you had to walk a whole kilometre with those cases. You would stop every few steps to get a rest. For someone who is heavily overweight they live with that every day. I am aware of numerous cases where the obese have been refused employment. Although it’s illegal for an employer to discriminate on the grounds of obesity they will always find another reason. I am also aware of the catch 22 they are in. Many of them are desperate to lose weight and are considering weight loss surgery. Here’s the problem, they won’t give you surgery unless you are of a certain weight and with certain diseases such as diabetes mellitus. So what do you do if you are below the threshold do you let your health deteriorate so they have to give you the surgery? Worse still if you are so bad you are a surgical and anaesthetic risk and you have a 1-2% risk of death on the operating table. Losing weight is almost impossible. Traditional gyms can be a death trap for
them. Many such gyms don’t have enough disabled parking which some may need. Some gyms have turnstile access which is often too restrictive. Some people are far too afraid to go to a fitness class and I have lost count of the number of times I have had to exclude able bodied people from my classes for making fun of the obese who make an effort in one of my fitness classes. Some gym equipment has weight limits and so ironically it would be unsafe to take such people in. Hence sometimes many of them are being refused gym membership because they are too overweight. Most importantly a fitness programme has to be undertaken by a of which there are very few. Very often such people have associated diseases which complicate matters- diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, shortness of breath, asthma to name a few. At one gym I worked at a level 2 gym instructor who only had two weekends of training worked out a programme for such a person and I was asked to review it. It’s a good thing that the client never used the programme- it would have killed him! So many of these people would have wasted hundreds if not thousands of pounds on weight loss products and treatments that have not worked. I am even aware of people investing thousands of pounds for weight loss surgery only to find that it has not worked either. Many such people will have great pain both emotional and physical. Very often people in this position have terrible back pain caused by abdominal fat and incredible pain in the hips and knees. That’s why so many of them get arthritis or if you already have it then the excess weight makes it worse. When I did orthopaedics as a medical student I used to see many cases of people with terrible hip or knee pain caused by arthritis made worse by obesity. All too often the surgeon or the anaesthetist would tell them that

they were a surgical or anaesthetic risk due to the obesity and in every case the patient would express desperation asking how on earth they could lose weight when any form of exercise would hurt the hips, knees or back. These were people who were waking up at night with the pain. As a student I couldn’t say anything even though I knew of solutions. I am not sure which is worse the emotional pain or the physical pain. I have had clients in the past whose partners have left them because of their obesity. You can argue if that person is the right partner but that’s a different story. One of the fastest growing causes of divorce or relationship breakdown is snoring. One of the commonest causes of snoring is obesity. However for many of them their social lives are blighted because they are housebound. Overweight school kids are often the victims of bulling because they stand out and often don’t fight backsomething that carries on during adult life. Such people are ridiculed all their life. Sometimes it is very moving to hear stories of people who can’t find boyfriends or girlfriends because of their obesity. I have heard lots of stories of people saying that bedroom activities are compromised because of obesity.

Judge Jane
JJane Thanks to all those who wrote to me after reading my last offering. Reading your messages gave me no pleasure as they reflect the everyday struggles of ordinary people caught up in their own private hell. From the parents who have lost various parts of state support which once would have provided some respite from the extreme difficulties facing them and their terminally ill child to the retired and elderly robbed of the value of their life savings each story is a tragedy in its own right. The suffering of those impacted by recent unusual weather has presented members of the general public so inclined with opportunities to spot other more far reaching consequences of austerity when combined with decades of low investment in road, rail, utilities, water services etc.
It’s just my opinion! www.b2b1st.co.uk
We are ruled by a party dominated by climate change deniers and “small government” advocates. So it is no surprise to discover their disaster response strategy is at best limp and at worst absent. This is despite the predicted increase in similar major incidents. What few improvements have been made in random areas since 2007 is nothing compared to what is actually required. Of more concern is that in addition to cuts in local budgets and the dismantling of relevant state agencies there is also a downsizing of emergency services. The disappearance of all the associated specialists and their knowledge will also mean future problems have less chance of being adequately managed. There are third world countries more able to deal with weather extremes than we are. But, I think the seminal moment for me was hearing one millionaire Minister announce “residents in affected areas are able to do more for one another than a government ever can and this should serve as a reminder that responsibility for flood management and defence must begin with the homeowner”. So there we have it. As government ministers turn their backs on the problem - the insurance companies run for the hills, the specialists are told they are a useless expense and the PM misrepresents small funds in the pipeline to affected areas as “new”
and “unlimited” amounts thousands remain homeless, vulnerable and with no prospect of prompt support. Businesses large and small go bust because banks aren’t lending and food producers can only wait for the water to leave their flooded fields. I am unsure what is worse a government revealing it is unsure how to respond to such disasters or a government pretending it’s doing something when it’s real involvement is arms length. It is the ultimate irony the most badly affected areas are those where government votes are concentrated. The fact they are currently knee deep in sewage seems like a hard way to learn how the policies they supported actually impact in real life!

Movie Previews This month is definitely the time of year for everyone to be in the mood for the movies as the biggest event of the film season happens this Sunday evening, The Oscars. So to get you in the mood, here’s what will be gracing your cinema’s this month.
Coming Soon… The film follows low-level worker Adam ( ) who is employed by a big corporation run by Nicolas Wyatt ( ). All Adam wants to do is earn enough money to take care of his father who worked all his life and got nothing to show for it, although this wish takes him into unknown territory that could lead him into danger. He is approached by Wyatt and blackmails him into becoming a corporate spy. He is sent to infiltrate a company run by Wyatt’s former mentor Jock Goddard
Paranoia
) and gives him new ( ground-breaking software to earn trust and eventually learn of upcoming projects he can feed back to Wyatt. With lots of double crosses and turncoats you’ll need to pay attention to try and figure out who works for whom. A crime thriller that keeps the attention high and keeps you guessing as to what will happen next.
Labor Day Although it missed out on any Oscar nominations, probably because of the release date cut off, this suspense drama could still be worth a watch. This story follows the lives of depressed single mother ) and her 13 year Adele ( old son Henry. While out shopping one day, Henry is approached by a mysterious man ( ) who is bleeding and makes Adele and Henry take him home to take care of his wounds. They soon learn he is Frank Chambers, an escaped convict who is being hunted by the police.
Through flashbacks we learn Frank was sent to jail for the murder of his girlfriend. As the days go on Frank and Adele grow closer and they soon fall in love. They decide to pack up and all 3 of them will move to Canada to start a new life. As preparations begin on Labor Day, a series of events follow and it is unsure what will become of the newly formed family as the authorities start to close in. Not the usual kidnapping drama but the fact there is romance involved doesn’t force the story anywhere it doesn’t want to go. A romance with a twist.

Veronica Mars
One for television fans now, Veronica Mars was a popular series which ran from 2004 to 2007 and made many headlines when a campaign through the website Kickstarter meant that the creators were finally able to make a film version. The series was focused on the life of Veronica, a teenage private investigator who worked for her father solving crimes from dog knapping to murder. Kristen Bell starred as the heroine and has since starred in many films including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Burlesque. She even leant her voice and singing talent to the recently successful Disney film Frozen. Along with millions of fans, she has been championing for years for a movie version and now the will has become a reality. After moving away from California and leaving her PI days

behind her to become a high-flying New York lawyer, Veronica is called back to her home town by her ex-boyfriend Logan after he is accused of murder. He asks for Veronica’s help and she reluctantly agrees and is soon swept back into her old life, helped by a high school reunion to help the transition along. Can Veronica help prove the innocence of her old flame and also keep hold of the life she created in New York? With the amount of support this film received before it even got made I’m sure fans won’t be disappointed.

Insurance - Advice When you enter a contract, you are forming a legally binding agreement that allows the other party to claim damages without the need to prove negligence on your behalf. The other party only needs to prove a breach of contract has caused them loss. It is important to note that many Professional Indemnity Insurance policies (especially the cheaper ones) only cover negligence, so there can be a significant gap between your exposure and the insurance provided. Always choose a Full Civil Liability policy where available.
This area of law is worth thinking about if you are in business. I.T. FiX iT Computers and laptops are very reliable, but accidents happen. A power cut, a cup of coffee spilt on your laptop, an unintended mouse click and your vital document is gone. In all of the cases above a computer expert can usually recover your data, but what you should have done is made a backup earlier. A backup is a copy of your information stored in a totally different place away from your main PC or laptop. There are many different backup methods, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Any backup kept in your home or business premises will protect you against everything except fire and theft, so a more reliable backup is kept off site. First find out how much stuff you have to backup: right click on your documents, music, pictures and video folders one at a time and choose properties to see how many MB (megabytes) or GB (gigabytes) they hold. Let’s look at some common backup methods.
discs with information on are kept in cool, dark conditions then they should last for tens of years. Keep them in sleeves or cases to avoid scratches. Do not use rewritable CDs or DVDs because they have much slower writing speeds and people always overwrite something they meant to keep sooner or later. An external hard disk is the easiest way to backup your data. Plug the drive into a USB slot then drag and drop folders from your PC or laptop onto the external drive. Any folders and files with the same name will be over-written. External drives use the same spinning magnetic disc technology as in your computer so they are also sensitive to knocks and electrical glitches. Do not expect hard drives to last longer than about three years and only plug them in whilst making your backups. External hard drives typically hold 100x more data than a DVD and cost about £50 for a 500GB drive. You can recover your data and check that is safe and sound at any time using any computer, independent of your broadband connection.
World. Some of these services are free for a certain amount of capacity up to about 2GB and are very useful if you have some documents that you want to access from different computers. It is not appropriate to use The Cloud for your entire music and video collection because it takes a long time to upload and download large quantities of data. Usually it is about 10x faster to download data than to upload it to the remote server. You obviously need a working broadband connection to recover your data in case of emergency. Cloud services have also gone offline for several hours recently, Microsoft and Google in March and Amazon in January 2013. These are not backup devices and should only be used to transfer data from one computer to another. We have hundreds of clients who can confirm this because memory sticks are easy to break physically by bending and easy to corrupt electrically by insertion into an unreliable computer. Do not use them as a backup!
We recommend that business users have Networked storage as part of their backup plan. A NAS device contains two hard disk drives that hold identical copies of your data. If one drive should fail, your data is safe on the second drive while you replace the first. This storage device can be used by all the computers on a network and costs about £250.
Most laptops and PCs have CD and DVD writers built in. A laser beam in the drive affects a thin layer of dye in the plastic disc to record your data. A DVD writer also writes or burns CDs and the main difference between a CD and a DVD is the data capacity: A CD holds up to 700MB and a single layer DVD up to 4.7GB. CDs and DVDs are very cheap: about 20p each and are Dropbox, Microsoft Skydrive, Google unlikely to be stolen if left on site. If Drive are all Cloud Storage options, meaning that your information is held on a hard drive in a commercial data centre that could be anywhere in the

John’s Plants This month there are signs of the approaching spring, with bulbs appearing as light levels and temperatures increase. There's plenty to do indoors this month, in preparation for the season ahead, sowing early vegetables and preparing propagators ready to sow seed of bedding plants. Its time to tidy up shrubs, removing any parts that are dead, diseased or decayed, don't prune if the plant or shrub flowers before June as you will remove flowering shoots and buds. Continue to dig over existing beds and borders, again incorporating as much organic matter as you can. Forking over not only helps prepare the soil for spring, it helps reduce pests by exposing them to hungry birds. Seed potatoes are now available and if you prefer to chit (encourage small shoots prior to planting )then now is the time. Planting onion sets in cell trays or small trays is also a good idea so that when planted in their beds they will be well rooted and the birds will not disturb them. When the weather allows, carry on clearing paths, check walls (but avoid concreting until there is no chance of frost), clean and insulate greenhouses and ensure heaters are working properly. Even a little insulation will make a
huge difference to your heating. Continue to plant your veg and flower gardens making sure you position the tallest where they will not shade out others. Plant bare-rooted shrubs and trees and container-grown climbers. As long as the ground isn’t frozen, February is the ideal month for planting as the soil will soon be warming up, encouraging new roots to grow and helping the plant to become established. Prune Roses by taking out all dead, weak and crossing stems. Cut hybrid tea roses back to about 8 to an outward facing bud and cut floribundas (those with flowers in clusters) down to 10 to 12 inches. Hellebores - or Lenten roses - in their many various colours will be opening from now on well into the spring. Trim off their old leaves, both to display the flowers better and to prevent the spread of disease. Fresh new leaves will emerge in the spring. Hostas - although there is no sign of these above ground yet it is not too early by the middle of the month to protect them from slugs whatever method you choose

ensure that no other animals can be affected. Do this again each fortnight and your hostas will have their best ever chance of not being devoured by their worst enemies. We have a large selection of all seasonal plants and shrubs available and can source most

“The Storage Expert”
pring is definitely in the air with blossom starting to appear on the trees and the s u n starting to come out. It makes us all start thinking about where to go on holiday or lazy days sipping a glass of wine in a beer garden with the sun shining down on us. For other people it is the first step to putting our house on the market and making the most of the good weather to show our house in the best possible light. So what happens if you have hoarded those precious family memories and as a result go to market with a cluttered home that no buyer can relate to, or what happens if you secure that all important sale but you have not yet found that dream home? A t Armadillo storage we offer a wide range of storage options whether you are looking to store just a few items to de-clutter the house or whether you are looking to store your extra items if there is a gap in between sales. All the units at the Armadillo stores are separate and you have your own lock on the door as well as having 24 hour CCTV to ensure
Written By… See advert on Page 40 www.b2b1st.co.uk
that your items are always secure. We only charge you for the space that you need and then you can access your unit anytime during the hours of 8am-6pm MondayFriday or 9am-6pm Saturdays. We can even take deliveries for you at the store if you are purchasing items for your new home which means you can enjoy the sunshine instead of waiting in for deliveries, and if you need your mail sorting during a gap then we can also rent you a mailbox. All of these services can be offered from a minimum of 7 days and we only require 7 days notice on most room sizes so no long term contracts because we appreciate how quickly your circumstances can change. We also sell different packaging materials including house moving packaging packs for your convenience. For more information or to find out about other business services then call either our Sheffield West Bar store at 61-79 West Bar, S3 8PS on: 0114 2706377 or our Sheffield Parkway store at 8 Parkway Avenue, S 9 4WA on: 0114 2720988 or visit www.bigyellow.co.uk. If you need boxes then pop into one of our stores by the end of May and we will give you just
mention 1stMags or if you enquire about storage then we will give you . Here are a few tips on how to pack your items: Stack chairs seat to seat with a cloth or paper to separate them. Use good quality storage boxes. Fill boxes to capacity—partially full or bulging boxes may tip or collapse. Heavy items should be packed into small boxes so that they are easy to lift. Make up an inventory of your stored items and keep it in a safe place at home. Protect your fragile goods in bubble wrap and tissue paper. Fragile items such as crockery and glasses should be wrapped in paper or bubble wrap before storing—do not use newspaper (the ink stains). Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in bubble wrap, marked fragile and stacked on their end. Wrap table legs with bubble wrap before storing. Use our wardrobe boxes which allow you to store your clothing on hangers in order to keep their shape.

Ubuntu Pods
Ubuntu Pods are Action Learning Sets. This form of learning is most attractive to dynamic owner managers who are committed to their own professional development and who love to embrace challenges in their business as constructively and positively as they can. Action learning was developed by Professor Reg Revans in the 1940s. He wanted to find the best way to educate managers believing that ‘
Action learning is an efficient and effective method of problem solving. Participants learn the technique of active listening which involves thinking and reflecting more analytically on the meaning and context of statements and situations shared by and with others.
than be managed by it is now a recognised principle in theories of professional development. Revans also believed that people learn most effectively from others whom they like and respect and with whom they have shared experiences. As management theories have developed the ALS methodology has been adapted into a variety of settings and sectors. For the last twenty years, learning sets have also been a key element in many top-level executive development programmes both in international business schools and the UK. The average small business owner will never have the opportunity or the budget to afford such a resource unless they can participate in an Ubuntu Pod.
My name is Jane Swain and I am an experienced facilitator of Action Learning Sets. I am the founder of Ubuntu Pods and I have adapted the methodology of Revans belief that Professor Revans to suit the people need to learn faster than specific needs of small the rate of change going on business owners like myself. around them if they are to manage their situation rather A maximum of six professionals come together monthly in each Pod. Topics
explored are relevant to all and reflect the experiences of small business owners. Each Pod comprises a variety of different occupations none of which compete and many of whom develop strong working relationships with each other outside of the group. The process is rigorous and demanding so is not for everyone. Guest spaces are allocated carefully to ensure we can maintain the privacy of members and the confidentiality of discussions.

How to become a salesman or saleswoman When I work with people who are about to start a new business, or who are trying to grow and develop an existing one, they often highlight selling as one of their weakspots. They know their products or services inside-out but often have never had to go through the process of selling them to customers. And selling comes with a bit of bad reputation. Ask someone to fill in the blank space in the phrase “----------- Salesman” and they will usually put in words like Pushy, Aggressive, Double Glazing or Used Car. We tend to associate selling with the bad experiences we may have had in the past. So it is useful to start with by reframing exactly what it is that we mean by selling. The definition which I like to use is that Selling = Helping people to make good choices. Begin to think of it in those terms, and it starts to look like a far more positive process, and also one that most people are already well equipped to perform. Business owners, as I already said, tend to know their products or
services inside-out so providing might have expected, so don’t bore customers with the information them with details they don’t need. that they need to make good Don’t forget , though, to tell them buying choices shouldn’t be too about the benefits of using your hard. service.
