JUDGE JANE... The ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius said “when words lose their meaning – people lose their freedom” which is some small comfort to anyone who believes our current politicians are unique in their sins of misrepresentation. For example we were recently advised by our Chancellor the economy is in recovery. What few understand is that following a very steep recession recovery should be very strong. As it is not the case currently we must seek to establish the cause of this unique circumstance. Prior to the current financial crisis and before the imposition of austerity the annual growth rate of GDP was a little under 3% in the years 1988 to 2008. In the same time period only 3 years have seen worse growth for the British economy than the 1.9% of 2013. Each of those 3 years was associated with the recession in the early 1990s. That crisis was caused by an attack on sterling by City speculators as it struggled to maintain its value in the European Monetary Fund. The worst day of the crisis is historically known as Black Wednesday. As now, ordinary households bore the brunt of the political folly in the form of rocketing interest rates. I recall the day a letter dropped through the door of my first home announcing
our mortgage loan was attracting an interest rate of 15%. Times were hard for my young family then as they are now for many similar and the speculators lived high on the hog then... as now. So, annual growth rates associated in the past with crisis are now redefined as recovery and Chancellor says success when he knows there is a crisis; and growth when he knows we are experiencing stagnation. It’s not madness...it’s an insult...but, he’s smirking all the way home in his chauffeur driven car to his millionaire lifestyle as millions struggle home on badly maintained roads or overpriced, aging and unreliable public transport. It is essential we all understand the implications the austerity program will have on the hopes and aspirations of the next generation. Continuing minimal wage growth, rising household debt and the investment slump are all linked in terms of their consequences. For example without investment from companies the creation of new, high-skilled well paid jobs will not happen. Mention of the one million jobs created in the last two years obscures the truth that less than half of these have been for full-time employees or that many of those are on zero hours or minimum wages. Combine that with the impact of

cuts to public sector spending in health, education and Local Economy budgets for social care including fire fighters, police etc and the outcome is inevitably chaos and crisis. It is this situation which forces people to drawn down savings or take on new debt to compensate for household budget pressures – something which is not sustainable in the long term. For most this situation will be a crisis to be endured for at least a further decade unless there is a complete reversal of policy. Most of the small business owners in our local communities will be feeling the impact of all this reduction in activity so please ensure to give them first refusal. We’re taught about it at school about how Noah was asked by God to build an ark as there was going to be 40 days and 40 nights of rain so the world would be flooded. It’s also been depicted a few times, most notable in the 2007 comedy sequel Evan Almighty. This version though has more of a serious edge to it though, and a much bigger budget too. Same Sex Marriage - an update… Since 2005, same sex couples have been able to enter into civil partnerships, which involve a civil ceremony conducted by a registrar at a registry office or a place with a licence to undertake civil ceremonies - in a similar way to different sex couples who get married in a civil ceremony. Civil partnerships entitle same sex couples to similar legal rights to those of married couples on issues such as inheritance, pension provision, life assurance, child maintenance, next of kin and immigration, but civil partnership can only be brought to an end in designated courts which deal specifically with civil partnership breakdowns, the choice of which is not as extensive as it is for different sex couples. However, finances are dealt with in a similar way to different sex couples. The most fundamental difference between civil partnerships and marriages has been the inability for same sex couples to have a religious ceremony, but parliament has now passed a bill that allows same sex couples to undergo a marriage ceremony. Whilst it allows same sex couples to have a religious ceremony at any religious institution
and call themselves “married”, religious organisations will not be forced to conduct marriages. The first same sex weddings in England and Wales can take place on the 29th March 2014: several months earlier than expected when The Marriage Act was passed. Those wishing to be amongst the first to marry had to formally give notice of their intentions to marry on the 13th March. One of the downsides of the new act is that, although same sex couples who married abroad under foreign law and are currently treated as civil partners will be recognised as being married in England and Wales from March 2014, UK couples who entered into a civil partnership under UK law will not automatically be recognised as being married. Unfortunately this means that some civil partners will have to undergo the ignominy of getting “divorced” by a formal dissolution of the partnership in order to then remarry. This anomaly is likely to be addressed, but, whilst there is indication it may be considered by the end of 2014, there is no information at the moment about how this is likely to be achieved or the procedures that will be required. A Barnsley couple are threatening to sue the government after being told they cannot get married as soon as The Marriage Act
comes into force as they would have to dissolve their civil partnership through the court first. The couple, who have twins, feel they have been penalised by entering into a civil partnership at a time when that was the only legal route open to them to formalise their relationship and protect their children’s financial Situations. In general the provisions for same sex marriage will, however, bring same sex couples in line with different sex couples both in terms of marriage and divorce.

PETS CORNER - Under New Ownership! We are the new owners of the business located on Deepsic Lane in Arkwright Town in Chesterfield. We used to be known as Calagran Quarantine Kennels. We continue in a separate section of our land to run the most northerly quarantine kennel in the country, one of only eight still remaining in England. However, the new boarding business is also something very special. Both our sleeping area and runs are some of the biggest in the country and in addition to this we have over 2 acres of
grounds where we can walk the boarders while they are with us. Cats also don’t get left out with central heating and heat pads and large covered outdoor areas with a ramp and elevated seating area to watch the world go by in their south facing private outside area. The thing that we hope makes the most difference about us though is what we call ‘ . Owning and running this business has been our life’s dream and animals are our real passion. Our staff have been with the business for many years and are equally experienced and passionate. We believe in spending time with all our animal guests and ensuring they feel loved, at home and have fun as well. We feel privileged to be living in this fabulous area and honoured to have been invited to write for the magazine. Spotlight On… Claire Else 44 and single lives in Killamarsh Near Sheffield, she has had a career as a graphic designer, travelled throughout England both with work and a series of relationships. Claire had a variety of jobs from graphic design, self employed vehicle sign writer, bar work and an Ann Summers Party Representative. Whilst moving through UK, Claire set up fusion parties as an evening & weekend business. As Fusion parties was developing Claire had requests for children’s fancy dress, so Claire launched Partytogo. Chesterfield law firm, Graysons WE, is delighted to announce further growth to its busy clinical negligence department and welcome Marilyn Whittle back after a short period away. Marilyn is a specialist in clinical negligence law, an area in which she has specialised since qualifying as a solicitor in 2008, after graduating from Sheffield Hallam University with an LLB and undertaking her Legal Practice Course at the University of Sheffield. Working mainly for the claimant during her career, Marilyn has recently spent around 18 months working for the defendant at a national defendant firm on the NHS Litigation Authority Panel. This experience helps to give her an all-round view of the clinical negligence process. Marilyn deals with the full range of clinical negligence work, including obstetrics, gynaecology, general surgery, orthopaedics, brain injury, cosmetic surgery, dental and acting for the deceased. She has a particular specialism in dealing with wrongful birth claims. She is currently working towards accreditation with the Law Society Clinical Negligence Accreditation Scheme. Peter Clark, managing partner at Graysons WE and head of its clinical negligence department says “I am really pleased that Marilyn has re-joined us. She has a great deal of expertise and will certainly be an asset to our already highly experienced team of medical negligence lawyers.” A very active person, Marilyn spends most of her spare time taking part in “anything and everything sporty”, including running, climbing and snowboarding. She has taken part in a number of half marathons and has been a member of Sheffield Running Club.
