Worksop WI May Meeting 2015… Afternoon Tea at Hodstock Priory. A fabulous afternoon at Hodstock Priory on Tuesday 19 May 2015. Afternoon Tea at the Priory organised by the Trustees of Nottinghamshire Federation of WIs for members, to celebrate 100 years of the WI. A talk on the History of Hodstock by the present incumbent George Buchannan was followed by Afternoon Tea prepared and served by Trustees and volunteers with sandwiches and cake to die for! Afterwards there was an opportunity to explore the grounds at Hodstock and perhaps work off a few of the extra calories! Thank you for a wonderful afternoon! This year is the Centenary Year of the formation of the WI and Worksop WI has a number of exciting events and excursions planned to celebrate this as well as our usual monthly activities.
The WI Centenary Annual Meeting will be screened live at various venues throughout the country on Thursday 4 June 2015 and we are lucky to be able to view the proceedings at the Savoy Cinema. Also in June we will be visiting the National Memorial Arboretum as well as taking part in the Flower Festival at the Newstead Abbey Centenary Celebrations – the WI theme being “Inspiring Women”. A few lucky members will be attending a Royal Garden Party on Tuesday 2 June 2015. Another one of the special events in the WI Centenary Calendar We are planning to visit the WI Centenary Fair in Harrogate in early September. The venue for our August outing has changed and we will now be visiting Rufford Park for a stroll around the lake and a social lunch. We are busy creating a new WI tablecloth and collating photos and
cuttings for our centenary scrap book. A busy and exciting year – you could be part of it too! Why not give us a try? Worksop WI meets on the first Thursday in every month at the Cricket Club in Worksop from 1.45 pm. There are over 50 members at the moment and everyone will make you most welcome We now have a facebook page so please take a look and see just what we do www.facebook.com/worksop-wi

Becky’s Movie Previews This year is the year of reprises and sequels of much loved favourites that include the new Terminator film, Mission Impossible, Mad Max and Jurassic Park. They’re starting to make their appearance this month and there’s also a bit of something for everyone.
Coming Soon…
Spy
The first film up this month is a comedy from the director of Bridesmaids and The Heat. It stars the ever popular Melissa McCarthy, who happened to star in the directors previous works as well. Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids), Jason Statham (Expendables), Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes) and even British favourite Miranda Hart also star in this comedy crime caper.

Susan Cooper (McCarthy) is an unassuming, desk-bound CIA analyst, and unsung hero behind the agency's most dangerous missions. But when her partner Bradley Fine (Jude Law) falls off the grid and top agent Rick Ford (Jason Statham) is compromised, Cooper volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of deadly arms dealer Rayna Boyanov (Rose Byrne), and prevent a global disaster. McCarthy hasn’t really put a foot wrong since the huge success of Bridesmaids, and Spy seems like another success waiting to happen for the comedic star. This is sure not to disappoint. Release date: 5th June saurus, and Carnotaurus to boost visitor attendance. Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) is the park's operations manager. Since the first film came out in 1993 it has spawned 2 sequels which didn’t do as well but were liked well enough for another to be made.

Mr Holmes In 1947, the long-retired Sherlock Holmes, aged 93, lives in a remote Sussex farmhouse with his housekeeper, Mrs. Munro, and her young son, Roger. Holmes reflects on his life while writing in his journals, tending to his bees, and dealing with the deterioration of his once incredible mind. But then he finds himself haunted by an unsolved 50-year old case. Holmes memory isn't what it used to be, so he only remembers fragments of the case: a confrontation with an angry husband and a secret bond with his beautiful but unstable wife.
This is taking the famous consulting detective in a different direction to what has been done over the last few years, but I’m sure this will be just as thrilling. Not as much action as the Robert Downey Jr foray but the brilliant mind of the man is still there, as well as being played by living great Sir Ian McKellen. Release date: 19th June

ARIES March 21st April 20th Travel plans will be cancelled in early June, thanks to a stressful Full Moon. This change of plans is actually a blessing in disguise, only it won't feel like one if you have to pay a stiff cancellation penalty. Breathe deep and know the Universe has bigger and better plans for you. A surprising email or phone call will prompt you to do some research. You may not have any interest in this subject at first, but will develop a real passion for it as your knowledge and know how grows. It will be much easier to make plans and negotiate deals at mid-month. Postpone any heavy decisions until June is halfway through. The New Moon on the 16th prompts you to take a trip for pleasure. If you're not in love, you will find it on your travels. Good luck arrives through your social network near the end of the month giving you more time to spend at home with friends and family. TAURUS April 21st May 21st The early days of June bring an end to a source of unearned income. You won't be able to rely on an insurance payment, grant, or scholarship any longer. Fortunately, family is poised to close the gap. Pooling your resources will help you overcome this temporary shortfall. The New Moon on the 16th is ideal for landing a good job. Seek opportunities related to teaching, writing, or travel. A relative will tip you off to a great position before it is officially advertised. Have your CV ready for submission. PETS CORNER - Responsible Dog Ownership…
This month’s editorial topic was requested by a member of the public who owns dogs and who was dismayed at how frequently he saw other owners not necessarily being as responsible as they should be. We all know being a pet owner is both a pleasure and an honour and I just wanted this month to write something about the responsibilities that come with that we should all remember. Control of your dog – I wrote an article in December’s issue on the new laws that affect dog ownership and I won’t repeat those facts again. However, controlling your dog whenever it comes into contact with other people or dogs is key from a health and care prospective of our dogs but also the fines and consequences now of not doing so can be significant. Microchipping – Since 1993 it has been the law that any dog in a public place should have a collar and identity tag on. This will be extended next year to them legally being required to be Microchipped. However, we would always advocate
microchipping as it is such a cheap and sometimes even free process. Collars come off and tags get lost and frequently the microchip is all that stands between a happy return home and the pound. Vaccinations – Ensuring your dog has at least an annual visit to the vets and standard vaccinations is really important to maintaining its health. It’s not that expensive but really can be the difference to your pets between life and death. Also important as we enter the summer season especially is to remember worming and flea control. Parasites are never nice but some can also be killers. Fouling – This is the one that gives dog owners the worst reputation. Dog faeces are not pleasant to leave around but in parks especially they can also be a serious health risk to children and pregnant women. The fine for fouling is up to a £1,000 and is increasingly being enforced. However, as responsible owners we don’t need a fine to know that scooping when their pooping is the right thing to do. Also when we’ve scooped the additional blight these days is people leaving the plastics bags with the
faeces as leaving the poop. So please scoop the poop and bin it or take it home! Dog in cars - Lastly as we enter summer in particular which is always worth repeating is the dogs in cars message. In less than ten minutes in a car even with windows left a jar a dog can die an awful death. Put simply just do not leave dogs in a car! Finally this month then to let you know that Calagran Four Paws Hotel now has a full grooming spa with a world class in-house groomer. If you want your dog grooming they don’t have to be guest to take advantage of the new hotel grooming spa facilities. Call us to book you furry friend in for just a bath or a full groom experience.

British Judo Association… ...launches ‘Throw Yourself Into Judo’ campaign 29.05.2015 On Wednesday the British Judo Association, the national governing body for the Olympic sport of Judo in Great Britain, hosted the launch event of Throw Yourself Into Judo, a new mass-participation initiative aimed at encouraging new people to try the sport. Held at the Budokwai, Europe’s oldest judo club, the day begun with British Judo Association Chairman Kerrith Brown and Chief Executive Officer Andrew Scoular addressing the delegates; the initiative was then officially launched at 11:00 with the transmission of a Thunderclap across Twitter, which reached over a million users. The launch event was well-attended by representatives from the sport and associated organisations, including Sport England, the Sport and Recreational Alliance and BUCS. obert Freeman, the new Mayor for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, was also present as one of his first official engagements as Mayor. Speaking at the event, he said: “It’s fantastic to be here today amongst so many active children and adults to learn about Throw Yourself into Judo; the sport is a great tool for
encouraging healthy lifestyles and boosting self-confidence in young people and we’re very supportive of the campaign’s aims.” Children from the Budokwai and other clubs in the area also took part in a typical coaching session and in a first for British Judo, this was broadcast live across Perisco pe, with over 100 people tuning in from across the globe. TeamGB athlete Nekoda Davis also provided a running commentary throughout the session, explaining the fundamentals of the sport to the audience. Nekoda was then joined by fellow GB athletes Ebony Drysdale-Dalley, Sam Hall, Gemma Howell, Bekky Livesey, Conor Murphy, Chris Skelley and Jemima Yeats-Brown for a sparring session. “It’s so important to get kids involved in sport from a young age and to do something that they love; when I first started judo at an after-school club I never thought it would take me to where I am today and the Throw Yourself Into Judo campaign is a great way of providing people with the opportunity to try out the sport”, said
Nekoda, who will be competing at the European Games in Azerbaijan next month. Speaking at the launch, British Judo Chair Kerrith Brown said: “It’s been a fantastic day at the Budokwai and the club has provided the perfect setting for the event. Through Throw Yourself Into Judo, we hope to widen the reach of the sport and engage with people of all ages and we look forward to building on the success of today’s launch and continuing to raise awareness of the sport’s many benefits.” British Judo CEO Andrew Scoular added: “It was fantastic to have so many people here to come and support the start of the Throw Yourself Into Judo campaign. “It was a great way to showcase our sport and we hope today has inspired people across the country to have a go at judo.”
