May In The Garden Don't rush to do your borders , baskets and pots as you may get caught out by late frosts. Unless you have some means of protecting your plants the best advice is not to buy your bedding until late may. We always recommend this to our customers as we want you to enjoy your garden with minimal loss. May in the garden is probably one of the most important months for all gardeners. Planting up baskets, pots and borders this should be completed late this month to ensure a colourful summer display. One thing you must do is to feed your plants regularly to keep them healthy and flowering to their full potential. This can be achieved by using purpose made slow release fertilisers or liquid feeds which are high in potash (K) which promote buds and flowering . To find out which feeds are suitable look on the container and you require the highest number to be on the right which is under K (potash) the other two elements are N ( nitrogen ) used for leafy growth and P ( phosphate ) used for good root formation. Tomato fertilisers are a good example of feed high in potash. Remember to water regularly as baskets and containers dry out very quickly so anything that will retain

moisture is useful, including water retaining crystals or if you have any old floristry oasis cut it into small cubes and add this to your compost. Other jobs this month include: Earthing up potatoes, and plant any still outstanding. Regularly hoe weeds from borders and veg plots. Open greenhouse vents and doors on warm days and nights. Mow lawns weekly. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils and other spring flowering bulbs.

Beemats are a great new product and are now readily available, the mat is 6ft x 2ft and impregnated with a mixture of wild flowers which will attract bees. Simply lay on a prepared surface and water. Other mats Lay new turf but only if you can water available include , butterfly, bird, and frequently otherwise wait until autumn. bug control. Plant your tomatoes in Have a great gardening month and if cold greenhouses and you require quality plants ,shrubs or stake at regular trees visit us at Johns Plants, intervals, keep well Doncaster road, Langold S819QL, or ventilated by leaving call us on 07979377570 vents and doors open always happy to help. as much as possible. Protect plants from Slugs and Snails use slug baits, course grit or traps, or Alternatively Encourage hedgehogs, birds and frogs as they all prey on slugs and snails.

Touring Company Beat The Street Moves In…

Beat The Street (Ground Transport) are specialist passenger transport company Beat The Street has recently moved into Midland Court, located on the Barlborough Links Industrial Estate. This new office, run by Clowne locals Ian Massey, Mark Baddams and Garry Lewis, is the chauffeur division of Beat The Street UK which supplies sleeper busses to the entertainment and music industry.

“Our music industry and touring background means the whole team is very experienced when it comes to planning any sort of journey; from simple airport pick-ups, to providing a full chauffeur service.” This experience, combined with the facilities at their new offices at Unit 1B Midland Court, means Beat The Street can also offer an indoor vehicle valeting and detailing service and a full laundry service.

“Our car drivers have experience ranging from transporting top stars across Europe to making sure you get to the “When you live on the road, knowing airport on time. They are prompt, polite where to get your vehicle cleaned and and always have a fresh, gleaming car your washing done quickly is vital! Our offices act as a drop in for the fleet of ready to go!” says manager Ian. Beat The Street busses as they travel up and down the UK, so we have our own vehicle valeting facilities and a laundry with capacity to take on more.”

With over 20 years’ experience in the music touring industry,

Beat The Street entered the chauffeured cars business four years ago at the suggestion of Ian, who had spent 15 years on the road as one of its top drivers. “We could see there was an opportunity to offer a chauffeured car service to our regular music and entertainment clients and other top business executives, and we’ve gradually built up the business to the point where we’ve been able to buy and move in to our own purpose-fitted building,” explains Ian. So, with a mix of chauffeuring, valeting and laundry services on offer, Beat The Street has an interesting legacy of experience for you to take advantage of! If you are interested in finding out more about any of these services please give the team a call on 01246 810577.

Becky’s Movie Previews Things are heating up in the cinema now with the mid-year blockbusters starting to roll out. So here’s what’s coming up this month.

Coming Soon…

Sabotage

He wasn’t lying when he said he’d be back, Arnold Schwarzenegger is bringing the action once again in new shoot-em-up Sabotage. As the saying goes, ‘if it ain’t broke…’ Arnie stars as the leader of an elite team of DEA agents that also includes the likes of Joe Manganiello (Magic Mike), Sam Worthington (Avatar) and Josh

Holloway (Lost). The team goes out on a drug raid that results in the capture of the leader a drug cartel and the recovery of $10 million. Soon the team start to realise that something isn’t right when the money that was recovered goes missing and some of the team are found murdered. It’s not long before the team are investigated for the theft and they have to find out who is setting them up before they all wind up dead. This is definitely not one for the younger generation as its packed full of death and destruction that we have only come to expect from the likes of Schwarzenegger. One for the die hard action fan. Release date: 07.05.14

Godzilla

I think it’s safe to say that everyone is familiar with the concept of Godzilla as it has been known in popular culture since its Japanese release in the 50’s. This film is a reboot of the first franchise and retells the origin of Godzilla in modern times as well as being faithful to the original films.

Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston stars in the epic as well as Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass) and Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene). This may be one of the blockbusters of the year and with its 3D status, it will no doubt draw a substantial crowd. Release date: 15.05.14

From the looks of the trailer the effects look immense (it will also be in 3D) and this is definitely a film that is worth a reboot, unlike so many others from recent times.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

This is the seventh in the X-Men series so far and is the third to be directed by Bryan Singer (X-Men, X2). Days of Future Past sees a mix of stars from the original trilogy as well as the recent films which looked at the origins of the Mutants. This film acts as a sequel to both X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: First Class as well as a follow-up to The Wolverine. These all come together for what may be the last of the films with the entire ensemble cast. The X-Men all come together to fight a war for the survival of the species across two time periods. The characters from the original X-Men trilogy join forces with their younger selves in a battle for their lives. The film sees Wolverine sent back to the past to convince the

Maleficent Now is another origin story of sorts and another in 3D, but this time it comes from the House of Disney. The film follows the untold story of the villain from 1959 Disney classic Sleeping Beauty that reveals the events that hardened Maleficent’s heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora. The film is told from the perspective of Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) herself and is the re-imagining of the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. She is driven by revenge and a fierce desire to product the land in which she resides, so she puts the curse upon the King’s new-born infant. As Aurora (Elle Fanning) grows, she is caught in the middle of the

Bolsover 1st

May 2014

younger Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) of what will come to be and to prepare for it in an effort to change the course of history. This is not an easy task as he isn’t the same man he later becomes (Patrick Stewart). Could this finally be the end for the species of mutant kind? There have been rumours of a similar origin story for the character of Mystique, recently played by Jennifer Lawrence so this may not be the last we’ve seen of the X-Men. Release date: 22.05.14

seething conflict between the Forest Kingdom which she holds in her heart and the human kingdom that is part of her legacy. Maleficent soon comes to realise that Aurora may hold the key to bringing about peace in the land and is forced to take drastic action that may change both of their worlds forever. This is the directorial debut of the production designer Robert Stromberg (Alice in Wonderland and Oz: The Great and Powerful). So this is sure to be an impressive set piece if nothing else but I’m sure with the following that Disney has both young and old, I’m sure this will not suffer at the box office. Release date: 28.05.14

Whitwell & District WI… …April 2014 Update Jackie from Chesterfield Street Pastors came to talk to us at our meeting on Monday 14 April 2014 about the wonderful work done by these dedicated volunteers every week-end in towns and cities all over the country. She gave us a potted history of the origins of the organisation which was started by Les Isaacs in London in 2003 and has grown rapidly to cover over 300 locations with 11,000 volunteers today in 2014. Street Pastors can be found on our streets from 10.00 pm to 3.00 am to 4.00 am every Saturday night/Sunday morning offering support and assistance to young adults who may be vulnerable after an evening of drink or substance abuse. The aim is to ensure that they arrive home safely after a night out without having come to any harm on streets which can quickly become dangerous late at night. All are full trained, totally committed volunteers who are generous with their time doing a wonderful job

keeping our young people safe in very difficult and sometimes dangerous situations. ACWW (Associated Country Women of the World) Derbyshire Federation is aiming to raise £4,250 to fund a clean water supply to a village in Cameroon with water to spare to irrigate surrounding land to grow vegetables for home consumption with any excess being sold in the markets to raise additional income. To support this at the end of April we intend to join with WI members from the De Rodes Group to walk around Creswell Crags at 10.00 am on Sunday 27 April 2014, again to raise money for the project. All over the world at 10.00 am their time women will walk to celebrate this special day. One of our members held a Group Coffee Morning at her home in aid of the Derbyshire Federation ACWW Project 2014. By selling home-made cakes and preserves, holding a raffle and making an admission charge for the event £90.55 was raised towards the Federation target. We are also collecting

unwanted silver, gold and costume jewellery and watches which will raise funds for ACWW. Plans for our summer outing on Wednesday 20 August 2014- a trip on the Kiverton stretch of the Chesterfield Canal with a meal at the Lock-keeper Inn have now been finalised and this trip is full. The visit to Winthorpe Gardens with the opportunity for a Yoga session and of course afternoon tea has not proved so popular and may have to be cancelled due to lack of support Our next meeting on Monday 12 May 2014 is our Resolution Meeting. This is our opportunity to vote for or against resolutions for our National Annual Meeting in June. In other words it is our opportunity to ‘make a difference’ Come along and meet us – every second Monday in the month from 7.00pm in the Community Centre, the Square, Whitwell, S80 4QR. Check out our web site: www.whitwellwi.weebly.com, or catch up with us on our Facebook page – Whitwell WI – please – we do need lots more likes!

Judge Doesn’t ‘fix it’ for Bob The Builder Tycoon’s Daughter… Two recent high profile divorce cases show just how the complexities of divorce law can continue to surprise and dismay. Victoria Luckwell, daughter of the director of a company behind the creation of Bob the Builder, enjoyed a lifestyle which stemmed largely from her father’s money, including a substantial property that he had transferred to her. When she married Frankie Limata he signed pre-marital agreements confirming that he wouldn’t claim against family assets. The couple had children and were financially assisted throughout the marriage by Victoria’s father.

compared to Victoria. Mr Limata was awarded £1.2 million overall, which included a house/flat, funded by Victoria, not exceeding £900,000 – although she would recover 45% of that when the youngest child reached adulthood. Victoria’s only personal substantial asset was the property that her father had given to her. She confirmed that her father would stand by his decision not to continue to financially support her following the divorce, and she would have to sell her home to finance the settlement, leaving her and the children impoverished. She said that the judgment created a ‘gold digger’s charter’.

the Court of Appeal dismissed her claim with a 2-1 majority, saying that the settlement wouldn’t have been significantly different had the relevant information been known. The court said that in the interim, Mr Sharland’s fortunes had changed and his parents’ financial position was now largely as he had said it was, albeit untruthfully, in the divorce proceedings. Is this a licence to lie, and do we have another subscriber to the ‘cheat’s charter’, given Mr Sharland’s ability to mislead his spouse about financial dealings and get away with it?

It is hoped that recent Law Society proposals on prenuptial agreements When the couple divorced Mr Limata will re-address some of the sought a larger settlement than was uncertainty caused by this kind of agreed in the prenuptial agreement. case by making prenuptial Victoria’s father said he wouldn’t agreements more legally binding If you want to make sure that you continue to financial assist her if Mr than they presently are. get the best possible result in your Limata’s claim succeeded, nor would divorce, you need expert, he make up any financial loss she Contrast this with the case of Mrs experienced lawyers on your side suffered in the divorce - inferring that Sharland who brought a case against right from the start. Russell Grant’s Monthly Horoscopes

ARIES March 21st - April 20th Early May is ideal for getting a makeover, updating your wardrobe, or undergoing a cosmetic procedure. Negotiate a raise during the first week of the month; a high powered executive will admire your tenacity. If you can't get the salary you want, you can arrange to work from home, at least part of the time. This will save plenty of money on commuting and meals. It will also allow you to enjoy more time with your family. Let your best friend or romantic partner spoil you throughout mid-May. You're overdue for some tender loving care. The Full Moon on the 14th will allow you to pay off a long standing debt. Your newfound freedom will come as a profound relief. A stalled relationship will move forward toward the end of the month. Disappointing news will arrive on or around the 28th. It will be difficult to communicate with a moody relative or neighbour. TAURUS April 21st - May 21st Spend time on solitary creative pursuits in the opening days of May. An invitation to join an exclusive educational or cultural institution will come your way on or around the 4th. This membership will improve both your personal and professional prospects. Don't let a repressive friend, lover, or business partner dampen your enthusiasm in the first half of the month. If you get turned down for a job, don't panic. A better opportunity will arrive near the 14th, probably through a personal contact. Celebrate a loved one's good fortune in the second half of May. A lavish dinner and sentimental gift are definitely good ideas. The New Moon on the 28th finds you arguing about money. You may not be able to get the salary you deserve, partly because an organisation has an unrealistic view about the work you perform. Stay patient. Your chances for finding a lucrative position will improve as May turns to June. GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st You'll find a receptive audience for your ideas in early May. Spend the first week of the month making proposals, negotiating deals and arranging meetings. Confusing

20

instructions from an authority figure make it difficult to do your job throughout the first half of May. Fortunately, your colleagues will help fill in the gaps. The Full Moon on the 14th marks the conclusion of a challenging work assignment. Fortunately, you'll get a handsome reward for all of your diligence and sacrifice. Friends will promote your talent during the second half of the month. The more networking you do during this fateful period, the higher your star will rise. The New Moon on the 28th will tempt you to change your look in some radical way, but don't do it. You're better off maintaining a classic, professional image. Express your wild side through creative projects. Writing, jewellery making and metalwork will be especially enjoyable at the end of May.

frustrating. Remain patient; the time will come when everyone clamours for your expertise. Sexual attraction will be too powerful to resist during the first half of the month. You'll have to yield to temptation. Schedule a meeting with higher-ups on or around the 7th, when it will be impossible to argue with your logic. You'll have to cover for an irresponsible friend or lover at mid-month. The two of you need to have a talk about their inconsiderate behaviour. The Full Moon on the 14th has you finishing up a writing project that could bring you fame and acclaim. Money from an investment or inheritance will allow you to afford a few luxuries during the second half of May. The 28th brings a fresh career opportunity, but this position will require you to make big sacrifices on the personal front.

CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd

LIBRA Sept 24th - Oct 23rd

All eyes will be on you in the opening days of May. Be sure to look your best, as you'll never know when a powerful executive will train their eyes on you. Your ability to get along with people from all walks of life will attract both personal and professional opportunities during the first week of the year. Try not to take out work frustrations on your family at mid-month. Your relatives are not the enemy. The Full Moon on the 14th finds you finishing up a creative project and the results will be spectacular. Draw firm boundaries with your boss during the second half of May. Finding leisure time will be difficult during the third week of the month, as relatives will be quite dependent on you. The 28th warns against confiding secrets, especially to seemingly sympathetic counsellors. Working from home will be a real treat as May turns to June.

Shower the people you love with love in the opening days of May. Money from a loan, inheritance, or refund will hit your bank account during the first week of the month, allowing you to afford some new clothes and artwork. Resist the urge to push your best friend or lover into a decision mid-month. A strategic retreat will serve you better. The Full Moon on the 14th is fabulous for negotiating a financial deal. You'll get all the terms you want and more, so aim for the sky. A spontaneous gesture of love during the third week of May takes your breath away. It may be difficult to gain admission to an exclusive club or educational institution around the 28th. If at first you don't succeed, try again. Your persistence will pay off. You'll have to play the aggressor in a romance as May turns to June.

LEO July 24th - August 23rd

SCORPIO Oct 24th - Nov 22nd

You'll make a fantastic impression at work in early May. This is a wonderful time to negotiate for a better office or improved hours. If you play your cards right, you could arrange to work from home at least part of the week. Beware of clashing with a conservative relative. Nothing you do or say will impress this sour character. You're better off surrounding yourself with supportive friends. The Full Moon on the 14th brings an end to a difficult family matter. At long last, you'll be able arrange your surroundings to suit your needs. If you want to buy a place, you'll be able to get a generous loan at midmonth. Your commute will get a lot easier once the second half of May gets under way. The New Moon on the 28th finds you facing off with a needy friend. Don't make the mistake of lending money to them.

Beware of being too heavy handed with a loved one in the early days of May. A friend needs all the sympathy and generosity you can muster. A passionate love letter will strengthen bonds of intimacy with your amour. You may have to shoulder your partner's burdens throughout the first half of the month. The Full Moon on the 14th affords a welcome opportunity to indulge your sensual side. Buy yourself some new clothes, jewellery, or toiletries. Splurging on a spa treatment is also advised. Ask a teacher or community leader to write you a recommendation during the second half of May. Their words of praise will open personal and professional doors. Don't let a youngster or lover pressure you into buying an expensive gift on the 28th. You need to be as resourceful as possible when May turns to June. If you work hard, you could pay off a debt before the month is over.

VIRGO Aug 24th - Sept 23rd Your input will not be welcome in the opening days of May, which will prove

SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st Money from an inheritance, refund, or legal settlement makes daily life much more comfortable in early May. This is a good time to buy creature comforts for your home. If you're looking for work, you could find a comfortable job during the first half of the month. Providing wealthy clients with luxury services will put extra money in your pocket. The Full Moon on the 14th will give you a welcome opportunity to rest, rejuvenate and relax. This is an excellent time to go on a solitary vacation. Visiting a mountain retreat will restore your spirits. Don't mix romance with finance in the second half of May. You shouldn't have to buy someone's affection. Trust your instincts regarding a long term investment around the 24th. This could be your chance to establish lifelong financial security. At month's end, the New Moon will put pressure on a close relationship. Be honest about your needs. CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th

Responsibilities toward a friend will feel heavy in early May. You're tired of having to cover for a loved one's shortcomings all the time. An intense flirtation will provide a welcome diversion throughout the first half of the month. This is a great time to embark on a love affair. If you're already in a relationship, be tender toward your partner, especially if they're tired from overwork. A little tenderness will go a long way this month. The Full Moon on the 14th will bring an end to a group endeavor. This will allow you to pursue a personal project that will bring fame and acclaim. Don't let your family interfere with your love life during the second half of May. Your partner could help you realise a cherished dream in the days surrounding the 24th. The New Moon that rises during the final week of May will bring a job offer. Hold out for a better position.

AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th It will be difficult to achieve a healthy balance between work and family in the beginning days of May. Working can actually brighten your outlook. Relatives have a way of bringing you down. You'll fare better negotiating yourself into a better paid job during the first week of the month. If you're self employed, raise your rates. Customers will be happy to pay what you are worth. The Full Moon on the 14th will result on a terrific professional victory. Word will spread of your talent, attracting more clients and better assignments. The results of a health regimen will attract admiring glances during the third week of May. This will strengthen your resolve to stay fit and healthy. The New Moon on the 28th will prompt you to launch a creative project. Keep developing your technique, even if the initial results are disappointing. Enlist the aid of an encouraging teacher; their instruction will make you a much better artist.

PISCES February 20th - March 20th You'll be able to afford a few more luxuries in the early days of May. Go ahead and splurge on stylish clothes and a fashionable new haircut. When it comes to finding professional opportunities, who you know will be more important than what you know. Tell friends you are looking for a job and describe your dream position. You could hear of a great opportunity through one of your social contacts. You could be awarded an advanced degree or legal award around the 14th, courtesy of the Full Moon. The second half of May is ideal for romantic and artistic pursuits. This would be a great time to take a vacation, preferably to a seaside resort. Your best friend or partner could get a raise or high paying job as May turns to June. Don't be surprised if you receive a beautiful gift as thanks for your love and encouragement.

A Masterpiece For £50… Local Artist, Keith Arrowsmith, studied at Art College in his youth, but decided to get a "proper" job in order to pay the rent. He kept up his artwork as a hobby, but after retiring decided to try his hand at selling portraits. He found he could provide a product at a quality and price pleasing to people. Using digital photography to capture the character and detail for an accurate portrait, Keith usually arranges a free photo session at the subject's home. Working in oil pastels Keith's striking portraits hang in pride of place in dozens of homes. Unusual pets including ferrets, rabbits and racing pigeons as well as people portraits are to be found in his portfolio. On visiting I carefully selected one I could use, I sympathised " It's a pity she's not with us". "Yes it is really".....came the reply......" but she usually comes in for her tea about five." I returned with my camera the next day to find pudding sat in an armchair facing the TV. " She's very skittish and doesn't like men so you'll only get one" explained the owner. I took three identical photos of the immovable pet who was totally engrossed in the TV and the owner agreed it made for a lovely portrait.!"

Castle Street Medical Centre Update‌ The Patient Participation Group held its latest meeting on 8 th April with 12 members present. Emma Round our Care Coordinator was also present. Emma later introduced Helen Weston from the Derbyshire Carers Association who then gave a talk on what the association does. The association has been in existence for some 25 years and covers the whole of Derbyshire with centres in Chesterfield and Derby City. It is estimated that there at least 10000 carers in the county and in addition there are many more who do not recognise themselves as carers. Helen said that it can take up to 5 years before people decide to ask for help. There are any number of ways DCA can help, advice on benefit claims, adaptations to the home, information and DCA also arrange Days Out, trips etc, for carers. DCA can also arrange handyman services, assist with Carers Assessments, Respite Care and Relaxation Sessions. They also support Action for Children and raise awareness in schools through Drama Sessions. DCA also provide help through an Advocacy Service. Starting on June 9 th it will be DCA Carers Week and we are hoping to have a Coffee Morning during that week to help DCA with their Fund Raising and to assist anyone who might need help ( details at a later date ). DCA also produce a Quarterly

Newsletter and they have plenty of leaflets available, these are available in our waiting room. Our PPG are to look into ways to help received.
