Panthers Wins The Double After 28 Years… Chesterfield Panthers 1st XV have been crowned league champions – for the first time in over 25 years. Following their confirmation of promotion, Chesterfield cruised to victory over Keyworth RUFC on Saturday 5th April with a 90 – 0 win. Such was the volume of tries and conversions during the match that the referee struggled to keep up with the score resulting in an official full-time recording of 83 – 0. Fans at Dunston Road watched the Panthers run in 14 tries on home soil to cement their name in history once again – 28 years after the club’s glory days. It was an emotional day for many spectators, which included past players from Chesterfield’s glory days when they use to play against top clubs such as Leicester, Rotherham and Bedford to name but a few. The crowing as league champions and promotion to Midlands 3 East (North) is the icing on the cake for Chesterfield Panthers following its £1.8m investment in a purpose-built ground at Dunston Road last year. Captain Steve Avenier said: “Although we gained promotion last week to win the league is amazing – the first time in 28 years. The trophy is ours and I can’t wait to see it in the clubhouse. We have put Chesterfield on the map for rugby once again, reclaiming our place at the top of the table.” The game was witnessed by a number of former players from Chesterfield’s glory days including Henry Ford, former captain of the 1st XV in 1978. Ford is also current captain Steve Avenier’s stepfather. Avenier said: “I grew up watching my stepdad on the pitch and have long wanted to emulate his achievements and I have done it – captaining a great side to victory.” There was a lot riding on the game. The previous week Amber Valley RUFC was
deducted five points in the league table leaving Panthers the task of securing a victory against Keyworth to secure the title of league champions. The whole squad knew that once kick off came they had to come out firing and ensure that there was no lack lustre performance. Dominating from the off, Panthers ran in six tries before half time and the remaining eight in the second. Man of the Match was awarded to Carl Walker with a fantastic five try haul closely followed by Glenn Grayson with four all from the second half having come on as replacement for Tye Rose who had a great game but was denied his own try by the referee in the first half. In true fashion, the forwards won the game with a few rewards for Paul Jones and Luke Holt for the hard work and dedication. Further points came from captain Steven Avenier and Chris Ward who also scored 10 conversions, to truly dictate the score of the game. Coach Derek Sherlock commented: “It was one of the best games Chris has had with his boots all season.” A delighted captain Steven Avenier said: "We had a vision from the very beginning of the season. Our pre-season coaching and technical training has paid off. I couldn't have asked for anything more from a group of 15 players on the pitch. It was a true team effort. We are all delighted." Coach Derek Sherlock joined the club at the beginning of the season having enjoyed a high profile career in rugby league which included a stint as Sheffield Tigers 1st XV captain between 1971-2 and Sheffield RUFC where he played 250 consecutive games. Prior to moving to Chesterfield Panthers he was Head Coach at Dronfield RUFC where he helped take the club from Division Midlands 5 to Midlands 2 in the Leagues finishing in a creditable 3rd place last season. Sherlock joined Chesterfield Panthers with some trepidation last year. He said: “I like a challenge but during the first
MicroChipSmart
few training sessions I had with the 1st XV I did wonder what I’d got myself into, but they turned it around. “I used to play against Chesterfield when it was a top club and I have a lot of fond memories and respect for the players so it wasn’t a hard decision to make to move to the club and they have all made me feel very welcome.” During the season, Sherlock has employed his tried and tested training methods, which include a fitness programme devised by player Rob Collins and also the buddying up of younger members of the squad with older players. “The lads have all had a good ethic in training and come up to the mark. To give them their credit, they have all buckled down, trained hard, taken the programme on board and gone for it. The enthusiasm and commitment of their captain Steven Avenier has also helped drive the team.” He added: “I am so proud of the team. They deserved it. The promotion and league win means so much to the entire team – older and younger players.” Steve Avenier added: “We are proud to have laid solid foundations in which to continue the club’s success for plenty of seasons to come. Strong players are core to our ongoing success and since moving to the new ground we have attracted a number of them. Our recent success will bring us to the attention of more.” FT: Chesterfield Panthers 83 Keyworth 0

PETS CORNER - Itchy Flaky Skin?…
and is also a great natural remedy for skin infections. It has a natural disinfectant property for use on minor cuts and can generally improve your dog’s general skin and coat condition, making it healthier. It also helps to deodorize your dog’s skin and clear up some rashes as well. Best of all generally dogs love the taste as well. I thought I would talk this month about something that I recently discovered and found really useful for my Doberman Leo. Leo is a six month old puppy and being mainly black the problem he had with itchy flaky skin was very obvious against his otherwise shiny black fur. We tried everything including medicated shampoos, change in diet and endless baths but nothing improved things for the poor lad. Then a friend recommended raw virgin coconut oil to me. I was sceptical that when vet bought shampoo wasn’t doing the trick that something I could buy in a health food shop would be the answer. However, at this point I was willing to try anything and I actually ordered an 800g pot off amazon. The key thing to remember is that it must be raw and virgin type not processed.
The magic in coconut oil is apparently Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT’s).MCTs are efficiently metabolized by pets to provide an immediate source of fuel and energy, enhancing athletic performance and aiding weight loss. In dogs, the MCTs in coconut oil balance the thyroid, helping overweight dogs lose weight and helping sedentary dogs feel energetic. There is a whole raft of science behind coconut oil but all I can tell you is two weeks on of feeding and rubbing coconut oil on Leo my Doberman and his skin and fur are looking great for the first time in months. Add to that I get a great hand moisturise as well. I thought it was a discovery which is worth passing on.
Many vets and researchers today are recommending the regular use of coconut oil for dogs and many other pets as an excellent source of nutrients, which keeps your dog in good health. On a more personal note having been full over spring bank holiday could we The recommended dose is pretty easy; ask people book now for the summer just give a teaspoon of coconut oil per period for their dogs and cats with us 10 pounds of dog, or you can give a at Calagran Four Paws Hotel in table spoon per 30 pounds. Start with Arkwright Town to avoid about 1/4 the recommended dosage disappointment! and build up to the recommended level over 3-4 weeks, as sometimes flu-like symptoms can appear if you hurried it right away.
You can feed the coconut oil to your dog or you can just rub it into the fur and skin directly or indeed both. It’s a great moisturiser (as you will feel from your hands afterwards if you rub into their fur)

New & Innovative Herbalist Service Launched… …in Chesterfield. Wien Caljouw and John Etherington are Medical Herbalists practicing ‘Traditional and Modern Western Herbalism’ working within the new ‘Complementary Health Centre’ on Chatsworth Road, Chesterfield. There is a growing interest in Herbal Medicine, and other complementary healthcare providers in the Chesterfield area and we bring our expertise and knowledge to care for the needs of local people. Wien is originally from Holland and has spent the last decade studying in the UK. Her interests are in ecologically based subjects, focused on native plants and their medicinal applications. Over time she has had to learn the plant names first in Dutch, then in English and finally in Latin. Her identification skills of medicinal plants are second to none. As a keen gardener herself, Wien’s intention is to eventually use only her home-grown herbs in all of Derwent Herbalists
preparations. Wien’s partner John is originally from Chesterfield, he had a parental influence in his interest in plants as his father is an ‘old school’ gardener who always uses Latin names for plants. Prior to studying Herbal Medicine John would often take Herb I.D. books out on walks with his children, for their education and to further his interest in medicinal herbs and mushrooms. John would like to improve herbal health care for men and thus holds a men-only evening Regularly. Wien and John met at Lincoln University when they both enrolled on the Western Herbal Medicine degree course. This was an intensive period spanning four years in which all aspects of general orthodox medical science for internal medicine were covered including pathophysiology, diagnostics, pharmacology, bio-chemistry and nutrition (to name but a few), and their relationship to the various approaches to Herbal Therapeutics in a clinical setting. Herbal Medicine is used in one form or another throughout the world today, and the degree course combined traditional wisdom with modern scientific based evidence. An initial consultation taking up to ninety minutes, includes
a detailed medical History, analysis of nutrition and supplementation, blood pressure and pulse readings. Further medical examinations may be required. On diagnosis a treatment plan will be discussed and a prescription formulated. Prescriptions typically include tinctures, teas, powders, creams, ointments or capsules. A follow up appointment will be made for two or three weeks later, taking approximately thirty minutes, to review the condition. Home visits are possible for those with mobility issues. Although we are in a busy location on Chatsworth Road we are tucked in a quiet area in a secluded yard with an arched entrance, next to the Parsons and Dunn newsagent opposite the main Ford motorcar dealership. Our entrance is at the top of the blue stairs. Please check our website to see a variety of events coming up over the next few months. We have planned guided herb walks, drop in mornings focussing on specific conditions and soon we will be organising a ‘blend your own herbal tea’ workshop amongst others.

Becky’s Movie Previews This year is flying by and we’re finally starting to see some sun. However, as it is Britain, you can always count on the fact there will be a few days where the rain will pour giving you the perfect opportunity to catch a film. Here is what’s on this month.
Coming Soon…
22 Jump Street We have another sequel on our hands, this time its undercover crime comedy 22 Jump Street. The first film was a remake of a TV show that ran from 1987 until 1991 and starred Johnny Depp in his early days. The premise being that the police formed an undercover unit of younger looking officers to try and tackle youth crime. Updating it for the present day, where the use of older actors for
younger roles is nothing new, we get Channing Tatum ( ) and Jonah Hill ( ). In the first film the unlikely partners infiltrate a high school to try and stop a dangerous drug spreading getting out. The film managed to do very well even though some were surprised at the casting of Tatum in a comedy role, not his usual forte but he pulled it off and the result was very funny indeed. This time around they have to go undercover at the local college. With frat parties and consumption of alcohol being rife they are sure to get into some strange situations. With the reputation for sequels being inferior to their originals, we’ll have to see if this one lives up to its predecessor.
The Fault in our Stars
Originally taken from 2012 novel of the same name, this is the heart breaking tale of what a person can go through when they are dealt a bad hand in life. It follows the narration of 16 year old cancer patient Hazel who is disillusioned with her situation and so is forced by her parents to attend a cancer support group. Through a mutual friend she meets 17 year old Augustus, an ex-basketball player and amputee who is in remission. They share stories of their own experiences with cancer and become closer and closer and soon they fall in love. But Hazel begins to wonder what it will do to
Augustus when she's gone and if it is really worth the heart break. Shailene Woodley stars as Hazel who was recently seen in Divergent and The Descendants. After the success of the novel I'm sure this will do well and it's safe to say you should take a pack of tissues with you to the cinema.

Divorce…A Fool and His Money…. “If you want it, here it is, come and get it…….” Lyrics from the famous Beatles’ tune, Come and Get It, of course, but not words you would usually apply to a divorcing couple! Divorce is a serious business, and mustn’t be made light of, but in these cases, it is hard not to see the foolishness of the men whose actions could only really lead to them giving their wealth away. In one case, a rich Arab, (a former government minister), signed an agreement to pay his estranged wife £60,000 a month, at a meeting with her in a Chinese restaurant. When divorce proceedings commenced, the man disputed the agreement, saying that he had not understood what he was signing, as he wasn’t wearing his reading glasses at the time, and was under duress due to missing his children. Needless to say, the judge found the explanation hard to accept from such an
educated man, but didn’t award the woman the full amount, reducing it to around £33,000 a month for her and her children. Still a fair amount out of any man’s coffers – especially one who had 4 wives, as this man already had! In another case, a millionaire businessman, who carried on living in the same house as his ex-wife after their divorce, met another woman and brought her to live in the same house with her child. He then asked his ex-wife if she would stay on in the house as his housekeeper, and told a judge that he couldn’t understand why his wife became ‘so aggressive’ at his suggestion. After having lived in the same house since the 1990s, when they divorced after a marriage of nearly 20 years, financial proceedings were settled in January this year. The millionaire argued that they had originally agreed that she would get no more than £3.4 million, but the judge disagreed, saying they had lived in a way that treated the divorce as ‘just a piece of paper’, and he awarded the woman
almost half of the man’s £13.6 million fortune. And one to watch… Nick Robertson, founder, and owner of 9.4%, of internet fashion site, ASOS – valued at £5.8 billion, has split up from his wife of 10 years – who he met on a blind date. Mr Robertson’s share of ASOS is worth over £500 million, and if they divorce, his wife could end up winning half of it – which could cause some jitters amongst ASOS’ shareholders if they think he might have to sell shares to fund the divorce! Perhaps a prenuptial agreement would have been a good idea here.

June In The Garden June has arrived and night frosts should have now disappeared meaning all bedding plants can be planted out into borders or containers . Before planting beds and borders, lightly fork over and prepare the soil adding a base fertiliser such as growmore or Fish Blood & Bone. Next always make sure the root ball is nicely moist and then water in again after planting, so the plants will establish quicker . When planting containers with multipurpose compost, remember to feed regularly or add slow release granules so that the plants are kept healthy and flowering throughout the season.
Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of spring flowering bulbs. Keep newly planted trees and shrubs well watered whilst they establish. Continue to plant container grown shrubs and perennials. Pinch out the tips of your fuchsias to encourage a bushy habit and more flowers. If any of your basket plants have become leggy or misshapen, simply cut excess off and this will encourage new bushy growth.
