Shine!… North Derbyshire has a brand new accessible club for children thanks to National Citizenship Service Students and local charity Accessible Derbyshire. 'Shine' is a new creative arts club set up by Rebecca Wortley: a local Creative Arts graduate. Its aim is to give children aged 0-5 the opportunity to express themselves in a safe and creative way. Funding for the club has been provided with money raised by

students on the National Citizenship Service programme which ran during the summer in Buxton and which encourages young people to take part in a social action project.

A team of students on the programme took part in a 35 mile sponsored walk through the 'Golden Miles' route of Derbyshire devised by Accessible Derbyshire co-founder Gillian Scotford as well as organising a fun-day for the charity at Carsington Water. Speaking about the new club Gillian said that: “We are delighted to provide start-up funding for 'Shine' which will give children and parents alike the opportunity to get together, make new friends and enjoy themselves in a non-competitive, safe and inclusive environment with friendly, trained staff. We have

chosen a fabulous, accessible location for the club in Cliffe Park, Dronfield making it ideal for all children regardless of ability or Disability.” The club is open to all youngsters aged 0-5 and will offer a range of arts and crafts activities every Friday for 6 weeks from Friday, 19th September between 9.30 and 11.30 at Cliffe Park, Dronfield. Cost is £3.50 per child with free juice and biscuits and there is no need to book. There is a large play area, disabled access, parking and the Vintage Rose café to enjoy so why not come along and let your talents shine?

PETS CORNER - Dangers in the garden…

As summer ends and the autumn chill is in the air many of us are thinking about clearing out the garden from the summer, tidying and planting ready for spring. We may also be buying some house plants or flowers to cheer up the longer evenings. Do you know which plants to avoid for your canine or feline? Plants and flowers can cause mild or severe poisoning in dogs and cats depending on the type and amount consumed. Symptoms of poisoning include vomiting, diarrhoea, tremors, abdominal pain, hyper salivation, fits and even coma and death. - One of the things to be aware of is bulbs, especially daffodil, tulip and hyacinth bulbs. Dogs like to use them as balls whether they’re playing while you plat or sometimes for dogs when they dig them up after they’ve seen you plant them. Best to be careful before you site them, don’t use areas your dog can dig unattended.. – Great for skin and burns but toxic to your dog and cats if eaten

– A lovely garden ornament but also at this time of the year being given as a potted bulb. The plant leaves are toxic but in particular the bulbs themselves contain a highly concentrated toxin. – Eating even a few leaves of one of these can cause severe problems for any animal included your beloved dog or cat. – Not the most poisonous but so many of us have them in the house, worth mentioning it can cause dermatitis and upsets tummies – Again not one that will cause death but if your dog or cats eats it can cause issues so best avoided. – The other name for foxglove is digitalis which if anyone has a relative with a heart condition is a heart medication. The plant can cause heart issues from missed beats to full blown heart failure so one to be avoided – One of the most toxic flowers to your pet which can cause severe kidney failure. – Heading into festive season we may kiss under it and dress the house with it but never let the dog or cat eat it – Not as bad as many think but can cause mild skin, mouth and stomach irritation – Rhubarb is great for crumble but the

leaves are a big no no for your pet. – Not seasonal but worth mentioning as while not lethal can cause serious upset stomachs and disorientation in pets. So be careful what you let your furry friend chomp on in the garden or in the house and stay safe and well as we enter the last period of the year…..blimey where did that go? Remember if you are taking a late holiday, visiting relatives or planning Christmas Calagran Four Paws Hotel is a great place for boarding your dog or cat, or day care, so they get a holiday too. I look forward to seeing you there xx Guest author – Gemma Ibbotson VSPDT

The book was written by none other than Nicholas Sparks who’s other novels have been made into big films over the years, these include; The Notebook, Dear John, The Last Song and Safe Haven to name a few. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles This month’s big blockbuster comes from none other the man behind the Transformers franchise, Michael Bay and there’s no mistaking that when seeing this film. Big production and big stunts bring to life the story of the Ninja Turtles that so many of us loved as a kid and can still sing the theme tune to the TV show, ‘heroes in a half shell…’ As this is an origin story we see how the Turtles came to be the crime fighting Ninja’s they are, how they came to meet savvy reporter April O’Neil ( ) and we

New and old audiences will both enjoy this big budget blockbuster and will be a great time at the cinema for everyone.

Fortunately, you'll have the support of a neighbour, sibling, or cousin who wants the best for you. A writing project will draw lots of fame and acclaim mid-month. This would be a great time to launch a blog. A short trip is in the cards, allowing you to tour a beautiful city on a whirlwind schedule. The Solar Eclipse on the 23rd brings a fabulous money making opportunity. It looks like you will be paid to create lasting works of beauty. SCORPIO Oct 24th Nov 22nd Don't let cruel comments prevent you from embarking on a programme of self improvement in early October. You're determined to make the most of your considerable potential and will reach incredible heights if you stay focused. An erratic colleague will get on your nerves, but don't let your frustration show. The Lunar Eclipse on the 8th brings an end to a difficult job and you'll be secretly relieved. You're tired of having to explain every move to an oppressive manager. A job at a government agency, hospital, or educational institution will allow you to work behind the scenes, which is just what you love. The Solar Eclipse on the 23rd will prompt you to change your look in some radical way and the results will be thrilling. Don't be surprised when the world sits up and takes notice of the new, glamorous you. A powerful romance will make you feel like you're walking on air at the end of October.

October 2014 SAGITTARIUS Nov 23rd - December 21st It will be practically impossible to get money you are owed at the beginning of October. Don't let this get in the way of having fun. A short trip will lift your spirits and strengthen your determination to get paid. The Lunar Eclipse on the 8th prompts you to abandon a creative project or romantic relationship. Spending time with friends will prove therapeutic. If you're looking for a job, you could find one through a personal contact. Getting paid to teach, write, or travel is a distinct possibility. Alternatively, you could get a job working for a humanitarian organisation. The Solar Eclipse on the 23rd will trigger a spiritual breakthrough. The sense of loss and longing that has nagged you in the past will suddenly disappear. Life will feel purposeful and rewarding as October turns to November. Think about moving to a secluded home where you can develop your artistic side. CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th No matter how much pressure you put on an authority figure, you will not get your way in early October. You're better off putting your energy toward a home improvement project. The disruption on the domestic front will make your job difficult, but that can't be helped. A Lunar Eclipse on the 8th brings an end to a difficult family situation, forcing you to relinquish some power. This will be a blessing in disguise. Career prospects will abound during the second half of the month. This is the best time of the entire year to move up the ladder of success. Put a little extra effort into your appearance. Looking the part of a professional is half the battle for success. A Solar Eclipse on the 23rd puts you in the path of an exciting group project. This will be a chance to show your creative side. Word will spread of your talent in late October.

work, the powers that be will remain indifferent. A Lunar Eclipse on the 8th brings disappointing news, prompting you to withdraw from public view for a while. Take this opportunity to grieve and heal. Fortunately, your best friend or lover will be poised to help you through this difficult time. Be receptive to a little tender loving care. The second half of October will allow you to study, write, travel and reflect. You could even get a chance to teach an advanced class. The Solar Eclipse on the 23rd brings a fabulous career opportunity. Jobs related to research, restoration and medicine are all worth checking out. Luckily, the positions in question will come with impressive salaries attached. Go ahead and ask for the top range of the scale. You could very well get it.

PISCES February 20th - March 20th Stand firm against peer pressure in the opening days of October. Your nearest and dearest are trying to get you to embrace conventional wisdom, but that doesn't have much appeal for you. Going against the grain has always been your style. A Lunar Eclipse on the 8th brings an abrupt end to a source of income. In a strange way, this will be liberating. Once you break free of an oppressive employer, you'll find a more meaningful way to earn a living. Opportunities related to art, diplomacy and advertising will be especially attractive. A Solar Eclipse on the 23rd allows you to make money from your expertise. Putting your creative talent to work will be stimulating. It looks like you'll be working alongside some extremely accomplished people, too. The end of October ends on a definite high note. Your star is on the rise; enjoy the ride.

October Gardening Now is the time to finish planting spring bulbs such as narcissi and crocuses - tulips can wait until November. Choose plump firm bulbs and plant in a location with good drainage. Add grit if the soil is heavy and ensure your pots and containers have plenty of good drainage. Bury bulbs at three times their own depth, tip upwards and make sure there are no air pockets around the bulbs. For a natural look, throw handfuls of bulbs in the air and plant them where they land. Some great varieties to narcissi to Grow include scented varieties Sir Winston Churchill, Repete, early cheer, bridal crown and Tete a Tete is a good all round dwarf type, all these are suitable for either pots or the garden. Eye catching tulips include Abu Hassan, China pink, Happy generation and spring green.

Plant new shrubs and perennials - while the soil is still relatively moist and warm, plant them so their roots have a chance to become established before winter. Divide herbaceous perennials such as daylilies , geraniums and rhubarb, Cut them back and divide large clumps by lifting carefully and separating down the centre with 2 forks back to back. Replant with plenty of compost and water generously. Cut back perennials that have died down - do not cut back the less hardy perennials such as penstemoms and hardy fuchsias - leave until they begin to shoot from the base in spring. Lift and bring tender perennials inside before frosts cause any damage. Support tall flowers - autumn can be windy so make sure any tall flowers are supported. Plant winter bedding and spring bulbs in your pots, containers borders and hanging baskets now. Winter colour comes in all shapes and sizes; mini cyclamen (these will only tolerate light frosts) heathers, dwarf conifers, variegated box, pansies, violas and trailing ivies all make good displays, bare rooted wallflowers are now available and add great winter colour to borders, two good varieties are Persian carpet and Tom Thumb (a dwarf variety). Move any tender plants under

www.johnsplants.com

cover before the cold sets in (if possible allow them to dry out partially before lifting them). If you want one of the true hardy cyclamen this is hederifolium and comes in a variety of colours and will naturalise into large drifts. It's important to lift containers that will be left outside off the ground to ensure good drainage and to protect against frost damage. This month is probably the best time to plant new shrubs trees and hedging either pot grown or bare rooted before the harsh frosts arrive, remember to water in well and support taller Specimens. If you want to move shrubs and small trees take as much root ball as possible, handle carefully and incorporate compost in the new hole, also mulch around the surface to retain moisture. As the daylight shortens sit back and relax and start to plan your garden planting scheme for next year. If you require any further information or quality plants and shrubs either visit us at our plant centre in Langold S819QL, or contact me at john@ johnsplants.com.

The South - Sweet Refrains… Friday 7th November CHESTERFIELD, DERBYSHIRE – Winding Wheel Box Office No: 01246 345222 Website – http://www.pomegranatetheatre.co.uk/ THE SOUTH announce ‘Sweet Refrains’ – Autumn / Winter 2014 UK Dates! After a successful Spring and Summer touring the country and playing Festivals, The South are looking forward to finishing 2014 visiting a few cities they've never played before. The combination of Beautiful South hits and album tracks as well as original songs from their debut album, Sweet Refrains has hit a pleasure nerve around the country. The South are hitting every point on the Compass! Once in a while a band appears that strikes a chord with many. Their music becomes an integral part of a nation's psyche and the soundtrack to many people's lives. Ingrained in the hearts of many is one such band, the Beautiful South. Over 3 decades this band became a household name, selling over 15 million albums. On disbanding in 2007, original members Dave Hemingway and Alison Wheeler went on to form The South and with mainstays Damon Butcher, Tony Robertson and Gaz Birtles (keyboards and brass since the very beginning of The Beautiful South): this talented 9 piece continue to celebrate the music of the Beautiful South and take on the challenge of creating new material for the band. Now with one highly acclaimed album 'Sweet Refrains' under their belt, The South are ramping up a gear for what has been an amazing 2014. With a marathon 64 gigs this year, there's life in the old dogs yet! Their rich tapestry of music is wooing audiences far and wide, as they

continue to receive ovations from all corners of the UK. People keep coming back again and again on the very same tour, so these guys are obviously doing something right! Want a brilliant night out? Want a moment of euphoria as old memories flood back and new ones are formed? With both old and new tunes that stand the test of time, experience this amazing live band performing great songs from Sweet Refrains and classics that can never be forgotten: including Perfect 10, A Little Time, Rotterdam, Don't Marry Her, You Keep It All In, to name but a few. You'll be surprised at how many songs you already know! Isn't it time you headed South? were borne from the ashes of The Beautiful South after they split in 2007. After 20 years, ten studio albums, three greatest hits compilations, thirty-four chart singles, 15 million record sales worldwide and performing in front of millions of fans, when time was called on The Beautiful South in 2007, not everyone was ready to leave the party. Dave Hemingway and Ali Wheeler, lead singers with the band - along with departed songwriter Paul Heaton – were having too much fun to get out the pipe and slippers, and so The South was formed. Joining the duo were fellow mainstays from the original touring band: keyboard wizard Damon Butcher and the potent horn section of Gaz Birtles and Tony Robinson that brought so much to the live shows. Armed with a sensational back catalogue of hits such as ‘Song For Whoever’, ‘Perfect Ten’, ‘Rotterdam’, ‘Don't Marry Her’, ‘You Keep It All In’, ‘Old Red Eyes Is Back’ and many others, there is a long way to go on this particular road. This band has history and pedigree. Dave Hemingway’s musical career stretches back into the Eighties. He became a founder member of The Beautiful South after the demise of The Housemartins, who had enjoyed a sustained purple patch and many hits before calling it a day in 1988. Whilst bassist Norman Cook went on to

become superstar DJ Fat Boy Slim, Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway proceeded to form the new band in December 1988. Right from the off, The Beautiful South seemed to defy the normal logic associated with pop bands, not least for the fact that they stayed together for 20 years.
