Becky’s Movie Previews We’re definitely starting to see the summer now as the weather hots up and the summer festivals begin. In case none of that interests you much, have a look what’s on at the cinema instead.

Coming Soon…

Tammy After the success of bridesmaids, Melissa McCarthy hasn't really stopped working. Although her efforts since haven't surpassed the 2011 smash, she hasn't done too badly. There's the popular comedy show Mike and Molly as well as a couple of films thrown in too (Identity Thief, The Heat). And now she's back with a new comedy directed by none other than her husband Ben Falcone (What to Expect When You're Expecting, Bridesmaids).

Tammy follows the story of a woman who isn't having much luck at the minute. She writes off her beaten up old car, she gets fired from a dead end job in a burger joint and to top it all she goes home to find her husband in bed with the neighbour. So she packs up and gets going. However there's a problem, she doesn't have a car anymore and she’s broke. Then enters her Grandmother, Pearl (Susan Sarandon) who has the money and the car and is desperate to see Niagara Falls. What comes next is nothing short of an adventure and may be just what Tammy needs. McCarthy leads a great cast that includes Sarandon (Stepmom, Thelma and Louise), the very funny Allison Janney (Juno, Hairspray) and Kathy Bates (Misery, Titanic). Release Date: 04.07.14

Transformers Age of Extinction

Now fourth in the franchise, we have another Transformers film to enjoy. Although Michael Bay is returning to direct (he wasn’t originally) and Steven Spielberg is producing, this is the first of the four films that has an entirely new human cast. This time it's Mark Wahlberg (Pain and Gain, The Fighter) at the lead playing a single dad who, along with his daughter, discovers a deactivated Optimus Prime.

series. There may be some that think they should have stopped at 3, especially as the sequels didn’t perform as well as the first anyway but with the same Director coming back and the likes of Wahlberg leading the cast that includes Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada, The Hunger Games), it should give it enough new blood for it to be an entertaining feature. Release Date: 05.07.14

It's been 4 years since the events of Dark of the Moon when Chicago was over run and now there's a group of scientists along with a crazed businessman who want to study the robots and push the boundaries of technology. We do have the return of our favourite Transformers including Optimus and Bumblebee. For this instalment we also have Dinobots, a first for the

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Although there are sceptics that think classics should stay in the past, there is a good argument for some to be reborn in a sense. The improvement of motion capture technology has come along leaps and bounds in the past 15 years or so. The man who seems to come into these roles is Andy Serkis who most notably played Gollum in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The effects make the animals and creatures he portrays look just as real as the humans he is cast against.

Another sequel this month in the form of some ape mayhem. Back in 2011 Rise of the Planet of the Apes was released as a reboot of the whole franchise.

Hercules This is the second helping this year we have of films about Hercules, the other being The Legend of Hercules. Anyone who is a fan of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and has Twitter will have witnessed the preparation he went through for this role with the abundance of pictures he has posted of his bulging muscles. But for someone who wasn’t exactly un-fit to begin with, he went through months of vigorous training to get himself ready and you won’t be disappointed. Reminiscent of the days of Schwarzenegger in the same role in the 1969, you wouldn’t want to come up against him. So the perfect look for portraying a Greek Demi-God. I think it’s safe to say that the story is a far cry from the Disney Chesterfield 1st

July 2014

In Rise we saw the story of Caesar, a chimpanzee who gains human-like intelligence and emotions from an experimental drug. After being raised like a child, he is taken from his home and put into an ape sanctuary. He gives the other imprisoned apes the same drug and they form an army that breaks free and puts man against ape in an epic battle. In this film a growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is

threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species. The human cast includes Gary Oldman (Batman Begins, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) and Judy Greer (13 going on 30, 27 Dresses). This one is definitely worth a look. Release date: 17.07.14

portrayal. Hercules is haunted by a sin from his past, and has now become a mercenary. Along with five faithful companions, he travels around ancient Greece selling his services as muscle-for-hire for gold and using his legendary reputation to intimidate enemies. But when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek Hercules' help to defeat a savage and terrifying warlord, Hercules finds that in order for good to triumph and justice to prevail he must again become the hero he once was. With the work that has gone into it and with Brett Ratner at the helm (Rush Hour, X-Men: The Last Stand, Prison Break) I doubt this will disappoint. Release date: 25.07.14

July In The Garden July in the garden should be when everything has now established in borders and containers and should flower until the first frost. Keep your maintenance regime going , paying attention to watering, feeding and deadheading this will prolong the flowering period of your plants. Remove all spent flowers from roses to encourage a new flush of flowers . Keep an eye on all of your plants for pests check regularly for caterpillars and aphids as it can be difficult to treat infestations if left to get out of hand. Use a propriety insecticide ( or if you prefer an organic alternative ) paying carefully attention to the instructions and always spray late evening to minimise the risk to bees and other beneficial insects. Prune June-flowering shrubs such as Philadelphus and Weigela after flowering ( this may produce another flush of colour) now is also a good time Prune deciduous magnolias if Necessary. Fast-growing hedges such as Leyland cypress should be clipped as necessary throughout the growing

season but be aware of nesting birds. Continue to Tie-in climbers and ramblers as they grow. Some of the most common problems with shrubs this time of year include Yellow and distorted leaves on cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) which indicates a sign of a powdery mildew problem. Brown patches on conifers may indicate an earlier infestation by the cypress aphids. Telltale signs include black sooty mould along the stems ,Prune out brown shoots and tie in neighbouring branches to help fill the gaps, spraying with a systemic insecticide may also be useful. Hoe beds and borders to get rid of annual weeds, such as bitter cress and chickweed leave them on the surface of the soil and the sun will dry and kill them. If it’s dry, perennial weeds like ground elder and the like can be treated with a systemic weed killer. NOTE systemic weed killers are indiscriminate and will kill anything they come into contact with. Never spray when there is a breeze. If you prefer cut or dig out perennial weeds down to prevent them from setting seed. In the greenhouse keep watering of tomatoes as even as possible to prevent splitting and blossom end rot,

ventilate as much as possible too and pinch out the top of your plants when they have reached the desired height. Plant leeks for winter in a position where a crop has been removed from your veg plot. Continue to plant container grown plants remembering to water well through dry spells. If you need quality plants and shrubs why not visit us and have a great gardening month and if you require quality plants ,shrubs or trees visit us at Johns Plants, Doncaster road, Langold S819QL, or call us on 07979377570 Always happy to help.
