Say cheese with Chesterfield Town WI… There was a legend-dairy night at Chesterfield Town this month. Approximately 50 local ladies watched as Simon Davidson from local business Cheese Factor came and delighted the room with wonderful anecdotes about his life selling cheese in Chesterfield and his memories of his dad setting up the business.

Feedback again was extremely positive. Members are already looking forward to the programme for the rest of the year and looking towards next year with many helpful suggestions for activities. The Chesterfield Town WI book club was launched and has held its inaugural meeting. Soon CTWI will be launching a crafting club as suggested by members. Pop along to a meeting for details.

Meetings are on the first Tuesday of each Photo 1:Beer cheese month at the Photo 2: Simon giving his talk. The ladies of the WI enjoyed a Chesterfield Studios, tasting session of two different types Rose Hill, starting of cheese which went down with a drink and a extremely well - particularly the beer chat before the cheese! Members were invited to planned speaker or bring their own wine to compliment activity. The next meeting is on Tuesday 5th August and to share with others.

PETS CORNER - Top Summer Canine Tips! your vet about pet friendly sunscreen to reduce the risk.

Summer is here and so far we have actually had some nice weather. The sun is lovely but we need to remember our dog’s health in this weather as their bodies cope very differently with heat than ours. If you’ve ever walked around a swimming pool while on holiday and felt the heat you will understand what we mean that this can be a problem for dogs in the summer. Pavements can get so hot that dogs can suffer bad burning to paws. You can buy boots to stop this but if you don’t fancy this fashion attire, walk your dog’s early or late to avoid injury. If you have a very energetic dog think about how much exercise you give them in the heat of the day. People forget that dogs can get sun burnt as well. In particular light and white furred pets. This can result in dehydration and sun stroke but can like in humans also lead to skin cancers. Either help your dog with sensible exposure or talk to

Always make sure your dog has access to lots of clean water where ever they are as they dehydrate quickly in the hot weather. If your dog tends to knock bowls over think about a ceramic heavy bottomed bowl to ensure this doesn’t happen. Keeping a dog well groomed and if it is a non-moulting breed or long haired breed having a trim will make them feel more comfortable and minimise issues with heat. You take your coat off so let them take theirs off too! Dogs don’t sweat and so they pant to lose heat through their tongues. If the surroundings are also hot this is not very efficient and their bodies very quickly start to heat up. Leaving a window open or a windshield on is just not enough and the horrific statistics show that a dog can die an awful death within ten minutes of being left in a car. Dogs dehydrate, their body temperature rises and their internal organs will literally begin to cook. Shortly after their temperature starts to rise they collapse,

suffer a seizure and death ensues. It is also worth remembering it doesn’t have to be a sunny day or your car in direct sunlight for this to happen. Cars are made of metal and glass which conduct and hold heat very well and dogs can still die in cars on hot but overcast days. It is also worth remembering heat stroke for dogs can happen in caravans, conservatories and even their own back garden. Consider not taking your dog with you and perhaps even using doggie day care. Calagran Four Paws Hotel in Arkwright Town offers doggie day-care and also grooming to help with those summer month challenges. See our advert or our website http://www.cfourpawshotel.co.uk

Something a little darker now as we have Deliver Us from Evil which follows the life of New York police officer Ralph Sarchie played by Eric Bana ( ) who is struggling with his own personal issues. He begins to investigate a series of disturbing and inexplicable crimes and he meets an unconventional priest (Edgar Ramirez, Born Ultimatum) who convinces him that the crimes are demonically related.

The Expendables 3 According to Sylvester Stallone this is the final go around for the action movie with an older vibe to it. It could be because the amount that goes into the production and fight scenes really are too much for them…or its so he can move on to making more Rambo films! Either way, the film that critics originally panned has become a firm fan favourite and we get even more stars for our money in this instalment as the likes of Mel ), Wesley Gibson ( Snipes ( ) and Harrison Ford ( ) join the ranks. For a little something different there are also some younger cast members which includes Kellan Lutz ( ) and the first female expendable Ronda Rousey

Although Stonebanks subsequently went rouge and became a ruthless arms dealer so Barney was forced to kill him… or so he thought. Stonebanks is now making it his mission to bring down the whole team, but Barney has other plans. He decides to fight old blood with new blood and so brings in a new era of Expendables who are younger, faster and more technologically advanced. It’s a clash of old school style and high-tech gadgets in the team’s final battle.

August In The Garden Enjoy your garden ! The most important thing this month is to enjoy your garden; heady scents, bright colours, an abundance of fruits and vegetables and hopefully more sunshine. The two most important jobs this month would be to ensure that your containers and baskets are well watered/ fed and deadheaded, feeding with a high potash feed once a week. Another essential job would be to remove all weeds from your borders as they compete against your plants for moisture. Container grown shrubs and perennials can still be planted throughout August but must be well watered until established, a wide range of both are always available some in flower or bud to give a continuation of summer colour and fill gaps in borders and containers.its now time to prune wisteria by

Shortening all long shoots, which are growing out from the main branches back to five or six pairs of leaves. Give herbs and lavender a light prune after flowering this will keep them compact. prune back all perennials that have already finished flowering,Trimming of perennials and shrubs might also encourage a second flower flush especially hardy geraniums, wiegelia, and roses. In the green house continue to make sure your tomatoes are adequately staked and very well ventilated , if you have around five trusses take out the tip of the plant so there is a good chance of development and allow for ripening before autumn. Pests and diseases usually flourish this time of year so take a walk around the garden and inspect

for any problems, it is far easier deal with if caught early. One thing to remember is that if you have to spray try and do it late evening when there is less chance of killing bees and other beneficial insects.

Positive patient praises Cancer Hospital… …despite devastating diagnosis A patient from Chesterfield has praised the work of her local cancer hospital despite being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. Joanne Taylor (44), from Old Whittington, is determined to share her experiences and raise awareness of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, which supports the work of Weston Park Hospital where she received radiotherapy. Weston Park Hospital is one of only four specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire – a population of almost 1.8million people. In August 2011, nursery nurse of 25 years, Joanne, visited her GP upon discovering a lump after a night out with friends. She was referred directly to Chesterfield Royal Hospital for a biopsy and shortly afterwards she was given the shocking diagnosis of third stage breast cancer. “My whole world came crashing down,” said Joanne. “It’s true what people say, you don’t think it will ever happen to you - and when it did, I was speechless.” Shortly after diagnosis, Joanne underwent surgery, having her lymph nodes removed followed by a full left mastectomy, at Chesterfield Royal Hospital in February 2012. Under the care of Weston Park Hospital consultant, Dr Din, Joanne was then put onto an intense 6-week

chemotherapy treatment plan followed by 20 radiotherapy sessions at Weston Park Hospital. Although it was offered to Joanne, she decided against reconstructive surgery and instead decided to start promoting the benefits of using a prosthesis long-term. Joanne continued: “It was an extremely difficult time for me and I had some l ife-changing decisions to make, but the treatment and care I received at Weston Park Hospital from day one was so reassuring.“The staff were always so lovely and supportive and there is a 24 hour help line for the hospital, which I found incredibly useful at times of panic or doubt.”

Centre to continue. and has recently granted £658 towards the provision of new make-up brushes for Look Good, Feel Better. With the help of her husband, Jay, her 83-year-old mother Betty, plus her mother and father-in-law, Susan and Stuart Taylor, Joanne is adamant that despite her ordeal she will remain positive and raise money to help others fighting cancer in the region. PR and Marketing Executive for the Cancer Charity, Cassie Melluish, said: “It’s really inspiring to see how Joanne has turned such a traumatic experience into a positive one and is keen to help others who may be going through a similar struggle. This year, in celebration of its 20th anniversary, the Cancer Charity is hosting a musical extravaganza called Proms in the Peaks, and is inviting the people of Derbyshire and beyond to join this unique event. On Sunday 7th September, locals will descend on the picturesque village of Castleton to enjoy light, popular and classical music with family and friends.

Despite receiving excellent care at the hospital and being in remission after treatment, Joanne began to struggle with depression and anxiety and sought the support of the Nenna Kind Cancer Support Centre in Chesterfield and the Cancer Support Centre at Weston Park Hospital, both of which receive funding from Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. “Nothing was ever too much to ask,” said Joanne, “and at both Nenna Kind and the Cancer Support Centre I was made to feel like an individual where my own personal needs were taken into consideration at all This late summer's afternoon of times.” entertainment will feature world-famous Tenor, John Hudson, and international Joanne benefited from attending the Look Soprano, Deborah Norman, as well as Good Feel Better session at the Cancer other special guests and a surprise act.n Support Centre in Sheffield, where patients Tickets for Proms in the Peaks cost £15 at all stages of their cancer journey, each (£13 concessions) and are available especially those suffering hair loss or to buy online at self-confidence issues, can come together www.promsinthepeaks.org.uk.
