www.johnsplants.com The most important thing this month is to enjoy your garden; heady scents, bright colours, an abundance of fruits and vegetables and hopefully more sunshine. The two most important jobs this month would be to ensure that your containers and baskets are well watered/ fed and deadheaded, feeding with a high potash feed once a week. Another essential job would be to remove all weeds from your borders as they compete against your plants for moisture. Container grown shrubs and perennials can still be planted but must be well watered until well established, a wide range of both are always available some in flower or bud to give a continuation of summer colour and fill gaps in borders and containers. Time to prune the wisteria by shortening all long shoots, which are growing out from the main branches back to five or six leaves Give herbs and lavender a light prune after flowering this will keep them compact. prune back all perennials that have already finished,Trimming of perennials and shrubs might also encourage a second flower flush especially
hardy geraniums, wiegelia, and roses. In the green house continue to make sure your tomatoes are adequately staked and the green house is very well ventilated , if you have around five trusses take out the tip of the plant so there is a good chance of development and allow for ripening before autumn. Pests and diseases usually flourish this time of year so take a walk around the garden and inspect for any problems, it is far easier deal with if caught early. One thing to remember is that if you have to spray try and do it late evening when there is less chance of killing bees and other beneficial insects. If you need any advice or quality garden plants and products then visit us at Doncaster road langold, or check out our web site, always happy to help.
John

It’s our belief that the cost of investment is too high and must be driven down. In recent years investors have placed their trust in the established financial institutions but have been poorly rewarded. For example, home owners have been unable to repay their mortgages because endowment policies failed to produce the returns they were expected to deliver. Borrowers have been encouraged to take on ever-increasing debts using credit cards and unsecured personal loans. And investors have taken stock market investment risks but have not been paid the full return for taking such risks. You could be forgiven for expecting highly paid, highly skilled fund managers would be able to easily beat the returns provided by the UK stock market as measured by the FTSE All-Share Index. The truth is shockingly different: No-one could reasonably object to paying higher charges if higher returns were achieved. But paying higher charges and getting lower returns just doesn’t make sense. The investor is
Are You Getting the Return You Deserve for the Risk You Are Taking?
paying too much and not getting rewarded for the higher costs being incurred. We believe the investor deserves more. Many investors are getting a very poor deal at the expense of commissions, charges, and expenses. It is time for change - it is time for investors to get the lion’s share of the profits and that means the institutions and fund managers should get less – much less. Consider this: The FTSE All-Share (1986-2003) has returned 8.99% per annum. The published average UK fund manager has returned 6.80% per annum. The actual investor average return is just 4.10% per annum. Data source: Lukas Schneider ‘An examination of the Difference Between UK Fund Returns and UK Fund Investors’ Returns’ July 2007 Clearly there is a major discrepancy between the published and the actual figures! How can this be? Typically, investors are told the Annual Management Charge is 1.5% per annum. But this is only part of the cost. There is more – much more. The truth is that extra costs – such as Total Expense Ratio and Portfolio Turnover Rate - add up to a much more expensive 3% to 4% per annum on typical retail funds… What this means is that your fund manager has to make the investments grow in value by the same amount as the charges, simply to maintain the original value of the investment. Aiming to achieve higher returns to compensate

Property News
Sheffield Council Selective Licensing Sheffield City Council are currently undergoing a 10 week consultation period to gain opinions on their suggested Selective Licensing Scheme. The licensing scheme is planned to be implemented early next year in the Fir Vale and Page Hall area of the city, and will require ALL private rented properties to be licensed by the landlord at a cost of between £500 - £1000 for a 5 year term. The council’s argument for implementing the licensing is to improve the conditions that private rental tenants face in many of the homes in the area, and to ensure landlords are meeting minimum standards. They also believe that the licensing will improve community tensions and anti-social behaviour. The main aim is to make the area a more attractive and safer place to live, and the council suggests that by having more control over the landlords, they can force them to take responsibility for their tenants, asking them to leave should they become a nuisance. Any landlord wanting to rent out a property within the designated area would be “checked” to ensure they are fit and proper before they were offered a license. Fines of £20,000 would be implemented for landlords who rent out a property without a license, and £5,000 for any breach of the license rules. Tenants wanting to rent a licensed property would be required to provide a reference from a previous landlord before their application would be accepted, and they would be required to take more care over how they behave in and around their home. The council are planning meetings and drop-in events throughout August, so if you would like to have your say, visit their web page at www.sheffield.gov.uk and search for Selective Licensing. There is also a PDF fact sheet you can download from the web page. If you think you may be effected by this proposed legislation, and need some advice, please feel free to give me a call on 0114 2238015
Phil
Landlord Tip: Ensure you issue your tenants with a detailed photographic inventory when they move in. This should list everything inside the property, and describe the condition. You should use this document when your tenants vacate to ensure the property is in the same condition.
Tenant Tip: Make sure you check over your inventory carefully, and agree any amendments before signing it. You will be expected to hand the property back in the same or better condition than when you moved in, so refer back to the inventory before you move out to avoid deposit deductions.

JUDGE JANE... I’m just in the middle of a “loyalty” storm – by which I mean I am being forced to consider what the word really means in all sorts of environments to which I am connected. For example I went to buy dog food from a large pet store and was asked if I would like to have their VIP loyalty card. When I enquired what value this represented to me it was explained I could expect to take advantage of certain offers only made available to those with this card. I am more than aware its real value is to the retailer and said as much when I declined. I know they would use the card to plot my purchasing behaviour and determine whether I react to “offers” in the shop, on the internet or both. In other words am I going to be the type of customer they want and if so can I be persuaded to spend more? It’s all very cynical and a long way from the days when I called at a local shop to buy only what I needed from people who I knew lived locally and to chat about unimportant things like births, marriages and deaths while we engaged in the sale process. In the latter I didn’t need to be offered a card to prove their loyalty to me it was evident in everything they did. The pressure put on companies large and small to establish brand loyalty is enormous. Last month I discussed the issue of gas and oil production and how many of the big names spend millions disguising their unsafe practices. They do this using a variety of means including sophisticated advertising campaigns as well as involvement with “good causes”. The organisations challenging them are regularly made out to be “oddball” groups full of strange, hairy people with weird dietary habits. These negative portrayals are used to place pressure on people to
modify their views and opinions for fear of being seen as “different” or “abnormal”. It’s a form of bullying and should not be seen as anything else. I was listening to a radio program recently that told the story of how Coca Cola is involved in healthcare in rural Africa. What price does brand loyalty bring in this environment one asks? Its representatives apparently show individual members of local communities how to spread the word about various medicines and health practices and gain financial reward at the same time. In societies where individual survival is often dependent on the kindness of strangers it should be of concern to everyone to discover that the pursuit of profit is being made more appealing than loyalty to one’s community. I found it difficult to comprehend how a company with so many bad production practices and which has played a part in the western obesity epidemic can be permitted to get involved in delivering very lucrative healthcare products and medicines in developing countries. Closer to home I had a call from a business contact today. At the age of fifty nine and after forty years with his employer my contact found himself being sold along with the business to new owners. His hard work and loyalty as an employee has enabled his former boss to build wealth sufficient for a comfortable retirement. My contact has always been on minimum wage and has never earned enough to do other than pay his bills and enjoy small occasional luxuries. After the sale was completed his old boss disappeared without saying either goodbye or thanks for all his loyalty. The new owners in their turn took what they needed from him and then made him redundant. I could only
JJane listen and attempt to show that I understood why he felt so disappointed. It may not seem obvious to you when I say my loyalty is to him not his former boss but, my view is that without the hard work and commitment of this man my former client would not have had the business that paid me for my work. Loyalty is an important part of our commitment to each other both socially and personally. It oils the wheels of daily life and enables us to respect those close to us and to trust that we will treat each other with regard. Big business cannot extract our consistent loyalty until such time as it treats us as individuals to be respected not things to be exploited. Small business needs to remember it will never achieve anything without the support of others and to recognise it cannot place a value on the loyalty it gathers from the local community. If you have a story to tell about how your life is being impacted by the cuts, corporate greed and/or mismanagement of public/private services you can email me with them at jjjustmyopinion@gmail.com

Jack and Jill went up the hill…. On a journey of marriage that they expected to climb together, but what happens when the hill becomes too steep, and they just can’t face the incline anymore? The inevitable tumble – trying with all their might to avoid the breakages. It seems harsh, doesn’t it?, but that is exactly what the divorce process often appears to be for separating couples; what starts out as desire to reach the top together, ends up in a downward spiral, with a lot of heartache, loss of esteem and costs. The thought of dealing with the fall alone and unaided can be daunting, but the fear of costs can be even more overwhelming, leaving couples tempted to try to deal with the cracks themselves, and often ending up distraught. Recent press reports about the demise of legal aid, along with stories of high profile, big money divorces ending with costs of hundreds of thousands of pounds, have certainly done nothing to allay fears, sensationalising the divorce process and its costs, and leaving couples heading for the courts alone. However, the thought of dealing with divorce alone and unaided is equally daunting, and the results can be
devastating. Michelle Cooper, partner and head of Graysons WE’s family law department, sees every day the difficulties that occur when people do not get the right advice early enough. Michelle says “On many occasions I see people who have got themselves into a real mess by leaving things too long before getting advice, and trying to deal with matters themselves to ill effect. By the time they get advice the situation is either very bad and takes a lot of unravelling, and/or they increase their own costs because of the time it takes to sort out and reverse the difficulties they are in. The scaremongering in the press has not helped at all; the big money cases reported are exceptional, involving multi- million pound assets, and, despite what many people think, legal aid is in fact still available in some cases.

The Lone Ranger
16
Coming from Disney Studios and director of Pirates of the Caribbean Gore Verbinski this is set to be a big budget outing hoping for some of the popularity and profits they experienced with Pirates. They even have Jack Sparrow himself in a starring role. First appearing on a radio show in 1933 and then a popular TV series from 1949 to 1957, The Lone Ranger is instilled as a cultural American icon. Even if you haven’t watched anything to do with these characters, everyone knows the characters of The Lone Ranger, his American-Indian friend Tonto and his horse, Silver. Who doesn’t know the phrase, “Hi-Ho, Silver! Away!”?
Armie Hammer (The Social Network, J.Edgar) takes the lead as the title character and Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean) is his trusted side-kick in this offering. The film follows the duo as they try to bring justice to the American Old West. Not usually far from Depp in a feature film, Helena Bonham Carter is in a supporting role along with Barry Pepper (The Green Mile, Enemy of the State) and William Fichtner (The Longest Yard, Black Hawk Down).
