Progress Update

Service Spotlight Maddy Frascogna Patchogue-Medford Key Club President Division 2 In the past, the Patchogue-Medford Key Club has volunteered on Saturday afternoons at the local Bristal Assisted Living, playing games with the Seniors. Overall, this was one of the clubs favorite and most popular service events. Members look forward to and speak about this event all of the time. It is one that members remember and take with them on their years beyond high school. Unfortunately with the Pandemic, we were not able to send members to the Bristal to play with the seniors, so we reached out and started a Pen Pal Program. Members exchange letters with the Senior residents. We send letters and care packages around the different holidays. We sent our first package around Valentine’s Day and we plan on sending our second round of letters in the month of March around St.Patrick’s Day and then in the Spring around the change in seasons. For our care packages, we included notepads, colorful pens, sugar free candies, lotions and custom hand sanitizers. We hope to “send love and not germs” to the residents at the Bristal. This project is a fun way to keep members involved and keep our relationships with the Bristal. It is also an activity that can be executed successfully while respecting social distancing protocols. Senior residents are not able to have visitors at this time, and I am proud of all the members that participated and wrote letters to brighten the day of those living in the Assisted Living. It is a very moving service project and I am delighted to be at the front of it. We are not letting the restrictions in place due to the Pandemic limit us from bringing joy to those around us- especially when they are in need of a smile. We learned to adapt and change to make old service projects work for our times!
