“My Cape Scapes”

November is a busy month! Election day (I hope everyone made sure to vote!)

Impressions of July 4th in beautiful Cape Coral.

Then Veteran's Day (make sure to thank a veteran for their service!) Then Thanksgiving (wow, it is early this year!) Then, it is getting ready for Christmas

(the only benefit to Thanksgiving being early is that it leaves more time to get

ready for Christmas.)

2017 .

Cape Coral,

There are many in our community who do not have family close by. If you are

cooking Thanksgiving dinner, consider inviting someone to share your table.

After all, it's all about being grateful for what we have.

When do you start putting up your decorations? I have 2 friends (they know

18”X24”

who they are) who start before Halloween. (Of course, their nickname is The

Grisswold's, so it does take a lot of time to do all that work!) And I have another

friend who starts on November 1st each year. Out with the pumpkins and in with the lights. I'm old fashioned, I start on Black Friday.

This month we want to salute all of our veteran's. It amazes me how many of

our veterans do not consider themselves heroes. I hear things like “I never even

volunteering to put your self in the line of fire, you are absolutely a hero! It

could just as easily have been you fighting oversees for the freedoms that we

all value. On behalf of the community, we want to thank all those who served

or are currently serving. You are our hometown heroes!!!

The Riverside Band

Cape Coral’s 47th Terrace area has no shortage of live bands,

especially on a Saturday night. I heard the Riverside Band play recently at Big Blue Brewing. This six-piece band puts out a big sound more

The selection of music they played was broad, and their ability to slide

The Riverside Band was formed by Evelio Rodriguez around 2002 in

Cape Coral as a garage band trio. Evelio, known as “EV,” told me that

from one song genre into another was very smooth. They played the

songs from the Goo Goo Dolls and The Who. They performed with

eating and focused on music from this high energy band.

I asked EV how they choose their music selections. He said “My

approach is to read the crowd. If they don’t seem to like the song or

the beat, I change it. If one of the guys thinks we should move to

The Riverside Band has played at many of our

BEER

So, as I sat and watched my littlest ankle biter practice soccer in the very cool 69 degree Florida weather, I received the friendliest monthly reminder from the magazine editor. She was reminding me (again) that I need to drink some beer and tell everyone all about it. I don’t think she likes reminding me, but I love it. It’s a beer alarm clock.

The Beer That Bites You Back

Anyway, when I got home I reached into the back of the beer fridge and, low-andbehold, I found a gem, a can of Newburyport Brewing Company’s Green Head IPA.

This was a special delivery directly from the brewery which I had completely forgotten about. Scott and I shared some a while back and I remember we really enjoyed this brewery’s beer. I’m looking forward to this. First thing first, the brewery is located in

Newburyport, Massachusetts. It’s co-founders, Chris Webb and Bill Fisher, built their brand on three things… Using the best ingredients in the world to brew amazing beer; sharing Newburyport and its rich seaport history (the Coast Guard was founded here); and going on adventures with great beer in a can. Enough said! No really, that’s pretty much it. That and they love music, they even have a stage at the brewery for local bands. Oh, and they play too.

On to the beer, Green Head IPA! This is a WestCoast style India Pale Ale with the slogan “The beer that bites you back.” And at 7.2% abv, chances are it might. Glug, glug, glug - that’s me pouring away. It’s a nice hazy orange color with an outstanding bouquet of tangerine, grapefruit, orange and grassy earthiness. This complex aroma balances nicely and is incredibly smooth. The alcohol is well hidden and, no surprise, this is a very enjoyable IPA. I wish I had another 1, or even 5 more.

Here’s the bad news, it’s only available in the Northeast. Hopefully they expand to the South because this is too good not to share. Kudos to Chris and Bill, rock on!

Cheers, Brendan

Big Blue Brewing Football, wings and beer! Oh my! A restaurant after my own heart! One of the area’s only breweries that serve

food, Big Blue Brewing is a front-runner for my favorite football-viewing wing spot (excluding the sunken-

in cushion on my couch).

Served tossed in sauces made at Wicked Dolphin Rum Distillery (Big Blue Brewing sister company), the fresh and never frozen wings come in your choice of six sauces. To get the most from your experience, the brew

master at Big Blue Brewing suggests these house beers for optimal wing/beer pairing:

Hot, medium or mild buffalo style wings – a Double IPA or IPA such as India Pale Ale Maple Bacon style wings – Honey Brown Ale or Lightest Thing Ya Got

According to a Harris Poll, wing eaters prefer celery (35 percent) to carrots (20 percent) as their wing “side” of choice.

Honey Orange style wings – Amber Ale or any of the IPA house brews Garlic Parm style wings – Orange Wheat

Located on the south east side of Cape Coral, Big Blue Brewing provides a laid back atmosphere for football viewing. Providing the possibility to watch multiple games at once, televisions are located throughout the

brewery as well as at the outdoor bar.

54 percent of Americans prefer traditional wings to their boneless cousins.

Northeastern wing eaters are significantly more likely to prefer blue cheese dressing (49 percent) than those in the Midwest (36 percent), South (30 percent) and West (30 percent), while those regions are more likely to prefer ranch dressing

Big 10 Tavern

Another great spot for wings, local favorite

Big 10 Tavern serves up their never frozen chicken wings either naked or breaded in 7

A

traditional wing lover, I was shocked to

prefer the breaded wings in this scenario.

Unique to this venue, sauces offered include HTG and Ultimate. If you ask me,

the Ultimate sauce is where it is at. If you want something unique, you might try to

track down the owner, Jason, and ask him

to cook up some wings for you the way he likes

them-

he

I might want to get off my couch and head on over to watch my favorite football games at this sports

themed restaurant. At Overtime, located on the south west side of Cape Coral, patrons can watch their

Overtime Pizzeria and Sports Pub

favorite games on their own televisions within their booths, or on the mega-screen television which is

centrally located in the restaurant. If the kids are not feeling the football game, there is a large arcade in the restaurant where they can entertain themselves while parents root on their favorite teams. What’s more and just in time for football, wings are only 75 cents on Thursdays.

Overtime starts off with fresh and never frozen wings. Taking a unique approach to preparation, the unbreaded wings are baked at the start of the day in one of the restaurant’s giant pizza ovens. These wings

are kept throughout the day and deep-fried to order, before they are tossed in one of the restaurant’s eight

homemade sauces.

Not yet available for purchase by the bottle, Overtime makes all eight of their sauces from scratch in the

restaurant. According to the chef, he is working through the details and hoping to bottle the sauces soon.

Sauces include: BBQ, Bourbon BBQ, Sweet BBQ, Teriyaki, Garlic Parm, Mild Buffalo, Medium Buffalo, and

Hot Buffalo. I had the pleasure of trying all of the sauces. My favorite of all of the sauces is the classic Hot

Buffalo.

On Sundays, you can get wings for just 25 cents each (dine-in only). You will also be in good company with your neighbors. Backstreet’s slogan is “Where the Locals Go.” In case visitors are looking for a place to watch

the game, this spot features a 105” television within the facility which broadcasts major sporting events.

There is neither any special preparation nor are there secret sauces for the wings at this stop. These wings are tossed in the fryer and served up in one of Backstreet’s seven store-bought sauces. Despite this, they were

good and an even better value! I put away my 10 piece order of wings that only set me back $6.25.

Backstreet knows how to take care of its patrons who over celebrate or wallow in the outcome of the game.

These fans can hop in the bar’s limo which will make sure they arrive home safely. Adding to the value, this

service to and from the bar is complimentary. 915 SE 47th Terrace

When I asked locals for great wing spots to visit, I was surprised when they responded with a chain restaurant.

I’ve noticed that most foodies in this area prefer locally owned restaurants to chain spots, so I knew I had to

Duffy’s

try Duffy’s wings. I was not disappointed.

Served in an array of sauces, it might be good to know that their “traditional” wings are breaded. If you would

like the wings without breading, order them naked. Both were great, but I preferred the naked wings served in their homemade Sweet Buffalo sauce.

If you want to catch your favorite football game on game day on one of their 101 televisions, look for the

flags. Televisions are preassigned to games to ensure that all teams are available for viewers. Also, if you’d like to take in your game outside, Duffy’s in Cape Coral has 14 televisions outdoors.

Ordering wings for an appetizer? Can I suggest the Blazing BBQ Burger as an entrée? The chef cooked one of these up for me while I was there, and it was amazing.

Shop with a Cop is a long-running tradition at the Cape Coral Police Department. It provides children whose families are having financial difficulties an opportunity to engage in a positive interaction with our police officers during the holidays. The Cape Coral Police Department is now accepting applications for this year’s “Shop with a Cop. The event will take place Saturday, December 16th.

Each year, the department chooses approximately 30-40 students to participate in the program. Students who are chosen to participate receive a Wal-Mart gift card. Students are picked up by police escorts and then taken to the store. There, with the help of their police officer, the students select gifts for each family member, as well as something special for themselves.

After shopping, the students and officers head back to the police department where gifts are wrapped and the children enjoy a free lunch before they’re taken back home with their presents.

The positive one-on-one experience each student receives from “Shop with a Cop is one that is never forgotten.

To nominate a child, parents should pick up a nomination form at the Cape Coral Police Department lobby or visit our website at capecops.com.

To qualify: • Child must be available on Saturday,December 16th to shop. • Child must be in grade Kindergarten through 12th grade. • Child and family must live in Cape Coral.

Unexpected Threats to a Well-Planned Retirement How to Stay On-Track When Unforeseen Challenges Arise By Rebecca A. Ross

Part 5 - Being Too Generous

It’s a scary feeling. You've planned carefully, saved appropriately,

invested thoughtfully and are on track to retire. Then you are met

with a significant and unexpected financial challenge. How do you stay on track?

Many families rely on the crucial years before retirement – a time

when peak earnings can be socked away to fund retirement and

eliminate any remaining debt. What happens when a major life event

or financial hardship interrupts your plans?

Following are five unexpected events that can all be made easier by having the framework of a financial plan in place. We’ll look at the

potential impact of each, and offer steps to minimize the damage and

get back on track to meet your retirement goals.

Last month we looked at Threat #4, this month we look at Threat #5.

Threat No. 5: Being Too Generous

Almost 40% of Millennials are still living with their parents, the highest percentage measured in 75 years.1 This may not come as a

surprise when you consider that many in this generation entered the work force during the great recession and are saddled with significant

When asked to help support adult children who are struggling, it is

important to evaluate your own plan, determine how much support

you can provide and for how long, and be clear about what you can

and can’t do. Use the opportunity to help your adult children create

their own financial plans to pay down debt and save for their own independence.

In general, being too generous with family and friends can undermine

a successful retirement. Amassing a sizable nest egg to support a long

retirement can spur some to offer to take friends on expensive trips, or agree to pay private school or college tuition for grandchildren

when it seems like you will have more than enough. It’s important to

keep in mind that you could easily need 100% of the income your

portfolio generates, so be careful not to give too much away too soon.

If being generous is important to you, then be sure to build this into

your retirement-spending budget. Generosity may be rewarding, but

if you run into financial hardship of your own, you may not be able

to count on others to step forward to repay your kindness.

The common thread to all of these scenarios is the importance of

developing a financial plan that can help mitigate the damage of any

student loan debt. Yet parents who continue to support an adult child

WINE

PROSECCO

Submitted by Chris Bacus Ciao Italian Restaurant Greetings fellow wine drinkers, For me, the coming of winter holidays in

SWFL always seems to signify the start of

hopefully cooler weather (I’m ready, how

about you?) I am always trying to find new

ways to toast the celebration of holiday

gathering with friends & family, office parties,

and quiet nights at home with our loved ones.

And hopefully you’ll find one of those ways

to celebrate with a little holidays cheer!

There is a magical wine that always lifts my

spirits when I get a little overwhelmed during

the holidays And I get overwhelmed easily, (let’s keep that to ourselves.) Of course, I am speaking of Prosecco. Prosecco is an Italian

sparkling white wine whose bubbly and fruity

flavor takes me away to a celebration or a quiet peaceful place, it’s just that good.

Once again geography plays a major role in

wine making capabilities. Made primarily

grape, dates back as far as Roman times and

has been the predominate grape grown in

North East Italy. The yellow, golden white

grape is exceptionally sweet and has an

appealing apple sweetness and fruity taste.

The magic of Prosecco comes in its

fermentation process. The Glera grapes are

harvested in early September, picked at their

peak of sweetness, derived primarily from the change of season which produces weeks of

warm days and cool nights. As with any

white wine, the grapes are pressed and the

skins are separated from the juice. Once separated, the juice gets introduced to yeast

which starts the fermentation process. After

an average of 15 days of fermentation, the

Prosecco wine is produced in a very specific

product is cooled to stop fermentation when

Although Prosecco has been around since Roman times, it wasn’t truly considered to be regulated or given DOC status in Italy until

2009. This makes it the youngest of the

DOC wines in Italy, but given those regulations, produces a more controlled and sustained product. The main derivatives of

Prosecco are Prosecco Frizzante, Spumanti and Tranquillo. The final product is allowed

only 15% grapes other than Glera.

I enjoy drinking Prosecco on its own

however; it can also be enjoyed with light desserts like Panettone and sponge cakes and

light cheeses. I would bet that Prosecco

would go great with Angel food cake. Sounds like a dessert is in my future!

Until next Month, as always remember that old friends, like old wine, always improve with age. Ciao!

CAPE KIDS WITH

Austin Wilson

Submitted by proud mom Paige Stewart

What you do has far greater impact than what you say. – Stephen Covey

Austin Wilson commits himself 200% to many great clubs, activities and fundraisers. Currently he is the Vice-President of the Senior Class at North Fort Myers High School, a Board Member of National Honor Society, Vice-President of the SADD Club (Students against Destructive Decisions,) and a member of Mu Alpha Theta, Helping Hands Club, Make a Wish Club, Medical Club, and the Save the Beach Club.

He is in his second year as a member of the Cape Coral Junior Youth Council, which was created to give the Cape Coral City Council feedback and fresh new ideas from their younger residents while giving the students opportunities to learn about government, how meetings are structured and how their city is run.

Austin has also volunteered for two years for Grace for Chase, a fundraiser near and dear to his heart. Grace for Chase raises money for families with children fighting cancer and the Golisano Children’s Hospital. Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other. – John F. Kennedy

Last year, when in eleventh grade, Austin was selected to Junior Leadership Cape Coral. This program strives to help students develop their leadership skills and learn about local career possibilities. Over nine weekday sessions spread out over several months, the group toured a TV station, radio station, hospital, the Juvenile Justice Center and a local court, elementary and middle schools. The students also met with the Police and Fire Departments, in addition to receiving guidance from local business and government leaders. In the spring of 2017, Austin was chosen to attend American Legion Boys State, one of the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for U.S. high school students.

For a week this past June, in Tallahassee, participants learned the rights, privileges and responsibilities of franchised citizens. The training centered on the structure of city, county, and state governments operated by students elected to various offices. Austin also attended the National SAAD Convention in Tampa this past summer. The mission of SADD is to empower young people to successfully confront the risks and pressures that challenge them in their daily lives. From alcohol to violence to mental health services, SADD strives to make the lives of young people better every day. Leadership is not about the next election, it's about

the next generation. – Simon Sinek

I think we are in good hands with young leaders like my son, Austin Wilson.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Get Healthy Hair for Free?

Years ago, there were basic and simple ways to try to improve the health of your hair. None

of them really worked and were often used as ways to stretch an appointment out because

the hair-dresser didn't quite finish up with the other guest yet. “Let’s put this deep conditioner

on your hair. Sit under the dryer for ten minutes,” would be said.

This action helped us catch up and certainly came at no cost to you. Now though, it seems

there is a charge for everything. Nickels and dimes. How did having healthier hair suddenly

require so much more money?

Healthy hair starts with how you handle it. You will need six to eight weeks to feel the full

effect of these methods. That’s not to say you won’t notice an improvement immediately. You will! But it will be even better in six to eight weeks. Get it wet!

Water moisture is an incredibly important ingredient for healthy hair. Compress and squeeze

your hair in running water. This will soak the hair through. When you feel it become incredibly soft, you have completely saturated your hair. Now wash it!

Most people over wash their hair. Increased color fading can happen here, too. ✔Rub the shampoo over your hands first.

✔Massage into the scalp. Don’t worry about shampooing through the ends of your hair, especially if it is long. This hair is the oldest and most fragile, but it's also the cleanest.

✔Rinse thoroughly. Get all of it out of your hair always working from the roots to the ends.

Condition it!

Conditioners, when they are good, replenish the elements your hair loses.

✔First, squeeze out any excess moisture from your hair. You want your hair damp, not dripping wet.

✔Apply the conditioner over your hands and then into the lengths of your hair, squeezing occasionally as you go. Work it in from the ends towards the scalp.

✔Rinse. QUICKLY! Your hair should feel slightly slick still. Squeeze out the excess moisture and finish your shower.

Dry it!

✔You’ll want to blot the moisture from your hair with a towel. Squeeze your hair lengths and compress the towel against your head. Be gentle! ✔Proceed to styling your hair.

If you regularly maintain your hair in a salon, even a little, you will spend hundreds to

thousands of dollars every year. And you should! Your hair and its style is the only accessory

you wear that you can’t take off in a day. It is there, good or bad. It can ruin your morning or

make an evening fabulous. However, you shouldn't need to purchase or perform costly actions to “repair” or “re-build” your hair.

Cape Coral Masonic Lodge Trunk or Treat 2017

A HUGE Success

By Rachel Eckerle

Put on by the Cape Coral Masonic Lodge #367, thousands turned

out for a free trunk or treat event on the Sunday before Halloween.

The event featured a haunted house, trick-or-treating from vehicle

trunks, food, prizes, games and exhibits from various community

organizations.

For the fourth year, organizers encouraged non-perishable food

donations from participants to benefit the Cape Coral Caring Center.

This year, the lodge collected over 1,200 lb. in food donations for the

cause.

“Giving back to the community is a huge reason why I’m proud to

be a member of the Cape Coral Masonic Lodge,” said Scott Peacock,

Grand Master of the Lodge.

Clutching their treat bags, thousands of eager children lined the block

around the lodge to enjoy the festivities. A long event, this year’s trunk

or treat lasted 4 hours. The amount of time was relevant to the

number of participants.

“Every year it has grown exponentially,” said Peacock. “I think we are

an established commodity, at this point, in terms of our trunk or treat. The kids really enjoy the variety that we offer.”

Peacock estimates that nearly 100,000 pieces of candy were

distributed to those in attendance, with 30,000 of those pieces

provided by the lodge. The candy provided by the lodge was available

for participants who ran out of candy before the end of the event.

“I loved how well organized everything was,” said Denise Ahlstrom,

local business owner and participant of the event. “I was not

expecting that many people. We did not run out of anything, but saw

some people that did. The organizers came around with more candy so that people didn’t have to turn anyone away.”

“Our goals are the same every year,” said Peacock. “We want to put

on an event that is well-planned and well attended, while providing

the families and children in our community with a safe and enjoyable experience during the Halloween season.”
