QUICK READS By Tony Henkels

End Alzheimer's - Dale E. Bredesen. A challenging read with a lot of medical terms equal to a college level textbook. His ReCode program requires an exquisite diet with a lot of supplements, plus an exercise & sleep program. He claims to have reversed over 500 cases of advanced Alzheimer's.♥♥ Political Risk - Condoleeza Rice & Amy B. Zegart. Two Stanford college professors wrote this book based on the courses that teach MBA students about how businesses & organizations can anticipate global security. Examples are Fed-EX, B.P., Johnson & Johnson, Sony, NASA, aircraft carriers, earthquakes, terrorist, etc. ♥♥♥ Our 50 State Border Crisis - Howard G. Buffett. (Warren's son) A very serious book about our immigration problems. His foundations have used over 3 BILLION $ to help poverty victims & help governments & law enforcement improvements in 150 countries.♥♥♥♥♥

Happiness Curve - Jonathan Rauch. Why life gets better after 50. World wide research shows a "happiness curve" that starts high in people's 20's, declines until about 45 & gets higher from the early 50's throughout the rest of your life.♥♥ In The Enemy's House - Howard Blum. A interesting book about how the FBI finally broke the Russian codes & found their spies (too late.) They stole our atomic bomb secrets.♥♥♥

A Spy Named Orphan - Roland Philipps. While a tough read, this is a complete history of 40 & 50's spies known as the Cambridge (England) 5. Donald Maclean was in US State Dept with clearance for FBI & CIA files, and this book is mostly about him, with a side story about Kim Philby, Guy Burgess & Anthony Blunt. All were spying for Russia.♥♥ Rocket Billionaires - Tim Fernholz. A fascinating book about Elon Musk & Jeff Bezos spending billions of dollars to fly rockets into space. They are competing with Boeing & Lockheed/Martin & launching spacecraft at 1/3rd or less of the cost of the BIG boys.♥♥♥♥♥

An American Family - Khizr Khan. Well written interesting story about a Pakistani man who immigrated to the US with his family. The last chapter gets political - he spoke at the Democratic convention supporting Hillary.♥♥♥♥ With The End In Mind - Kathryn Mannix. A doctor who specializes in palliative care & hospice care gives many examples of dying a more humane way than prolonging suffering with a terminal prognosis.♥♥♥

Going Deep – Lawrence Goldstone. The history of the first submarines being built and the men behind the companies that made them. Quite interesting in that the 1st successful company (Electric Boat) is still a major suppliers of subs as a division of General Dynamics.♥♥♥ Trump's War - Michael Savage. Author is an extreme right talk radio guy, but this book is a very reasoned synopsis of the battle (war) Trump faces to start to clean the swamp and get what would seem to be "common sense" spending controls passed through congress.♥♥♥♥

Scottish and Scotch Ales

From The Brewer.......

BEER

By Alexander Sarames Master Brewer, Big Blue Brewing

8

When you think of Scotland and its fine beverages, Scotch Whiskey is the first to come to mind, but we cannot forget about their distinct and delicious beers! Since grains have always flourished in Scotland more than hops, malt has a heavy hand in Scottish-style beers.

Based on archaeological evidence, Scottish brewing is estimated to be at least 4,000 years old. Neolithic vessels that have been unearthed contain residues of oats and barley laced with either meadow-sweet botanicals or honey.

Scottish brewing has explored a multitude of various styles in its long history, but in modern times, these Scottish-style beers can be broken down into two categories separated by alcohol content, Scottish Ale and Scotch Ale.

The first is simply the Scottish Ale. Scottish Ales tend to be lower in alcohol content, usually between 2.5 and 5% alcohol by volume. Scottish ales are full bodied, malty beers, usually dark brown in color, and have a lower hop content than their English brethren. This was a social brew, intended to be ingested in quantity because of its low alcohol content and often because of the volume sold.

Often known as 60,70 or 80 Shilling Ales, its numerical assignment was a direct correlation to the cost of a Hogshead (64 gallon wooden cask.) The higher the price, the more alcohol.

Scotch Ales, aka Wee-Heavy, aka 90 Shilling, tend to be a bit “meatier” than their little brothers, sporting a higher alcohol content of between 6 and 10% alcohol by volume. This beer is full bodied and robust with malt flavor. Often accompanied by notes of earth, roast, or dark fruit, these beers are often boiled for an excessive amount of time leading to a heavy caramelization. Served on Nitro at Big Blue Brewing, “The Legend of Sawney Bean” is a traditional 90 Shilling Scotch Ale, crimson in color and with a beautiful white head. Cheers!

6 Foot Down @ Bury Me Brewing By Joseph Welsh, The Boston Beah (Beer) Guy

This month’s local flavor comes from Bury Me Brewing, a great spot located on 41 in Fort Myers.

With a name like Bury Me, I went for one of their constant brews…. 6 Foot Down Oatmeal Stout with ABV of 7%.

Initially as you start to drink this stout, it makes you believe that it will be a filling beer; however, at completion, you don’t feel like you’ve had anything more than a light beer. This is good because you want more than one of these if stouts are your thing.

The appearance of 6 Foot Down depicts the characteristic of a stout being a dark matte brown. The beer was a full body, very thick and creamy with little to no head.

The mouthfeel is smooth, goes down easy, very mild and does not taste like it has a high ABV. It also does not have the inherent high IBU (Bitterness) that many higher ABV stouts have.

The smell is a distinctive coffee aroma, with a hint of vanilla.

I was pleasantly surprised by the taste. I particularly liked how it did not overpower your palate, making this a stout that would go nicely with a meal.

Overall this stout was a fantastic beer. The location had a great theme with lots of games to play and some pretty neat decorations, from skeletons, to growler chandeliers, fences in the ceiling, funky crops and a big outdoor patio with picnic tables. This beah gets a Joe score of 4.23 out of 5 (84.6% out of 100%). Total

something I’d ever order a second time. It fell

apart when bitten into, was the size of two since I was there last, they have updated their

menu, including their meatless burger which I

went back to try. To my surprise, I absolutely loved it.

Instead of lentils and cauliflower, this new burger is made from potatoes, coconut fat, and wheat,

and not only looks like meat, but tastes like it too. The inside it was even red like medium well

beef. I’ve had a few vegan burgers over the

years and this one is in the top ten, if not

number one. Even my mother, hater of all things

vegan, said it was delicious, and it’s a pain to get her to like anything not covered in cheese. A

reasonably sized patty, not like the monster from before, on a red colored bun. Yes, red, and

topped with a pineapple-mango salsa for a

sweet tangy flavor that sounds strange, but goes well with the ensemble. Before I even bit into it I loved looking at that red bun. I’ve never

seen one before.

I’m happy to say that Big Blue Brewing has

moved up in the vegan world. Before I would

have classified it as a great place to eat, but not

ideal for vegans. Now I suggest that anyone,

meat eater or herbivore, give it a try. The new

burger is called the Impossible Burger and it’s

rightly named for literally doing the impossible,

Caira Everly

HOMETOWN HERO

Caira Danielle Everly was born and raised in Cape Coral. After

starting college at the former Edison College (now FSW), she

transferred to and graduated from the University of Florida.

Born in to a family dedicated to public service, Caira started

early. While in Gainesville, she worked as the only civilian on

the University of Florida Collegiate Veterans Society

Leadership Board. She was also appointed by the Dean as

the Transfer Student Liaison for the School of Agriculture and

Life Sciences. Caira worked closely with the Dean on forming

a program for transfer students.

She also served on the US Department of Defense and Public

Defenders Homicide Division while in college. But she did manage to have some fun, too, as an alumni of the Phi Mu sorority.

After college, Caira worked for Tyco International in Federal

security contracting sales in Virginia. She then went on to

work for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement where

she worked as a crime intelligence analyst in various violent crime units.

It was only a matter of time before Caira ended up with the Lee County Sheriff's Office. She is the third generation of Everly's to be

a part of the team, following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather. She currently works with LCSO as a Criminal Investigative Assistant in Major Crimes.

A vocalist since 16, Caira has sung at Veterans events throughout the state of Florida, community events and SEC sporting events. She opened for Nashville recording artist John Anderson and Craig Morgan and the Cape Coral CoConut Festival, as well.

Caira has 2 rescue pets. And she just adopted a Siberian Tiger named Delilah from Lions, Tigers and Bears Sanctuary our of Arcadia,

FL. How cool is that?

Her favorite thing to do in the Cape is boating with family. Caira enjoys reading, running and volunteering for her community. She's

actively involved with many community and political organizations. Some would say it's in her blood. Caira has been a community and political volunteer for over 10 years, starting in Florida, then later Virginia, and now back in Florida again.

Thank you, Caira, for serving your community from an early age. With a lifetime ahead of you, your accomplishments will continue to mount. You are doing the name Everly, and your community, proud! You are a Hometown Hero!

Kara PErCHALL CAPE KIDS WITH

Submitted by proud mom Denise Perchall

Kara M Perchall will be a sophomore at Mariner High School (MHS) this 2017-2018 school year.

Kara grew up doing a bunch of things like cheerleading, dance, bowling, roller skating, karate, swimming, tennis, modeling, karaoke, and golf … and she really excelled in all.

Her grace and sense of rhythm helped immensely when participating in cheerleading, dance, karaoke, school plays and modeling.

Kara has done fashion shows/runway work for Gymboree, Macy’s, Dillard’s, Belk, and David’s Bridal. She participated in The Event in Orlando and even had an agent. She was part of the Ms Coconut’s royal Court for the Coconut Festival for 3 years. When she finally decides to sing at karaoke (it’s not too often and there’s usually bribery involved to get her up to the microphone)… most people will stop just to listen to this talented individual.

Maybe because of her brother, or maybe it is her natural talent, but she’s gravitated to both tennis & golf. Kara is on both teams for Mariner and enjoys being a part of the teams. She actually received her first trophy in Golf from MHS.

Kara is starting to take an interest in psychology and is doing really well in the Veterinary Academy offered at Mariner. She’s received numerous Academic Achievement awards, and has participated in great causes and programs throughout the years. She’s been brought up in a single parent household. Her mother made sure that she was exposed to the culture of theater, church, sports, and travel.

She has a strong faith and attends church with her mother and brother. Sometimes you’ll find her volunteering her time operating their lighting equipment or volunteering in the Cafe during Sunday Service at Bridge Community Church.

Since Florida is a vacation destination for most of the country, you may find Kara and her family hopping in a car, grabbing a hotel room anywhere in Florida from St Augustine down to the Keys… and just enjoying what the destination has to offer.

Kara enjoys sporting events, school, friends, family, movies, shopping, shoes, dining out, you tube videos, and social media. But the most important thing about Kara is her beautiful, caring soul. When she was little, she would pick her mom a flower almost every day because she knew Mom loved flowers. She grew up doing small gestures ‘just because’. She’s generous to a fault, intelligent, a hard worker, and quick witted.

She is truly such a light to this world and mom cannot wait to see what this kind, young lady will grow into and choose to do in life. JULY 2018

Sheena Reagan

For the last six years, Cape Coral native Sheena Reagan has been making people laugh all over the state of Florida. Being the girl who was named the “Most Responsible” superlative (and never the class clown) doing stand-up wasn’t always the clear career choice. JULY 2018

19

20

JULY 2018

In 2010, at age 22, Sheena was like any other student. Unsure about her future after

college, she listened for the calling that would hopefully reveal which direction to go. "When I’d ask for advice from my best friend, she would say ‘It doesn’t matter what you major in, you’re going to retire a comedian.’ I always took it as a joke,

ironically,” reagan admits.

Her beginning in professional comedy came from a single birthday request from her

best friend, rachel. She wanted Sheena to perform on stage at an open mic night

in Las Vegas, a trip they had been planning since they were teenagers. “She promised me that if I would just tell a couple of jokes at a mic for her birthday, she’d never

bother me about it again. She must have known I’d be addicted after the first time,” she recalls.

Calling venue after venue for an available open mic night, Sheena and rachel flew

to Sin City and scheduled the open mic on their very last night in town. But when

they arrived at the venue, it was a far cry from a comedy open mic. “I sat there, watching this big, sweaty, topless dude jam out on his electric guitar and I was devastated that I wasn’t going to be able to perform. Everyone back at home was waiting on the video, and the story.”

The manager of the bar, however, having seen her disappointment, tried to make it up to her. “He said he felt bad and told me I could tell jokes between the acts, if I was still up for it. That was good enough for me!”

When she returned home, performing took a back seat and she did nothing but

write comedy for an entire year. Looking for a good laugh and a shoe-in, Sheena went to the LaughIN Comedy Café in Fort Myers on a Saturday night to a sparsely

attended show. When then house host, Chris Cowells, asked what she was doing

there alone, she gave him an LOL moment when she asked about the next auditions.

Finding this adorable, Chris put her on stage the next evening to open with five

minutes. “Chris was the first to ever take a chance on me, and it changed my life.”

Time started to fly and performing was starting to become a way of life. “Comedy

life is full of ups and downs. Sometimes it’s the best day ever, and sometimes you can’t help but wonder why you’re doing this to yourself.”

In 2014, reagan entered the Ultimate Comedy Competition at the Immokalee Casino

where she was unanimously “booed” off the stage after her opening line. Not one to give up, Sheena returned in 2015 and ranked in the top 5.

During 2016, the world of comedy was at a standstill for Sheena. “I had no bookings

from October on. Zero. I didn’t know what to do.” Being used to comedy

supplementing her income, Sheena took a second job waiting tables at the comedy

club, in addition to her position as an escrow officer. “It was horrible and humbling,

but at least I was in a comedy club. I’ll never be able to thank Brian and Janice enough for how much they helped me out that season,” she says.

July 2018

21

The following spring was the beginning of comedy springing back to life. “Brian

had sent me a flyer for ‘Florida’s Funniest Female’ in Boca that April. I had been

off the stage for so long, I honestly would have taken any reason to tell a joke into a microphone.” Having just been through the worst drought of her comedy career, reagan quickly signed up. She headed for the laughter, and after six months

without a single professional appearance, she was named runner-up in Florida’s Funniest Female 2017.

In September of that year, Sheena left her professional job in title insurance for a

fresh start in real estate and in pursuit of the love to do stand-up. “I had been

thinking about it for a long time, but I couldn’t ignore the calling anymore. It was

time to go.” And then along came Irma, just one day after she left her career

behind. Although the real estate scene was a mess, comedy starting paying the bills, and continued to do so for the following months.

With a personality much larger than her stature, Sheena pokes fun at comments

she’s received about her size, her dad’s cut-off shorts-- which are entirely too short

-- and facets of life ranging from careers, dating, and the world around us. “It’s a little easier for me to tell you what you WON’T hear in my act—politics, religion,

racial, gay or dark humor. I try to keep it fun for everyone. No one wants to spend

their hard earned money to hear your agenda.”

People may wonder if being a performer is a glamorous lifestyle. “It’s either a hard

yes or a hard no. You’re either staying in a ritz Carlton or in a ritz Cracker box.”

“Even if there were no travel or rewards, even if I never get rich or famous, I’ll still

be doing comedy. It’s who I am and I wouldn’t be me if I stopped,” Sheena explains.

Sheena’s advice to all: “Be obedient to your calling. For a long time, I wondered if this was something I was being called to do, or if it was just something I like to do.

After praying on it for a long time, it was made clear to me that laughter is a

healing gift! And comics can bring that to their audience, and just as important,

to each other! Comics are broken people. And there’s something about broken people that are led to the mic.”

She describes herself as a “spitfire, to say the least” when she growing up. She has

a heart for veterans and the community, and her guilty pleasures are sandwiches or brownie in a cup.

To see this local award-winning comic, make plans for Sheena’s performance on July 20th at Personal Touch Catering located at 1530 Santa Barbara Blvd. Call (239)

945-2456 for tickets or on August 22 at Laugh-in Comedy Club located at 8595 College Pkwy ( just over the bridge) in Fort Myers. Call (239) 479-LAFF for tickets.

Italian-born director Bernardo Bertolucci,

who also made Last Tango in Paris, shows

love in its rawest, most painful and

beautiful form. I must warn that this is not for the bashful mind. Anyone afraid of full

frontal nudity must avoid this movie

because Bertolucci doesn’t shy away from

graphic sexual content.

Underrated actors, Eva Green and Louis

Garrel, play fraternal French twins sharing

one soul. Indie actor Michael Pitt, known for playing oddball

roles, is the kind-hearted American who befriends them. The

three become close within a matter of hours and it’s only a day

later when the twins offer their friend to move in with them. The three form an erotic triangle which blurs the lines of love and lust

as Pitt’s character quickly embraces their union and begins a

sexual affair with the sister and an intellectual affair with the

brother; a three-way relationship built on pure intimacy and intellectual debates.

The twins are inappropriately close. As they later admit, they

don’t see each other as two people but as one person and

therefore don’t see anything strange about their relationship.

are part of it. You can’t stand outside looking in.” If there is a single line that sums up this film, this is it. Once their

relationship starts, the three never leave

the apartment, choosing to live in their

own world. At one point, they do leave and they find the city ransacked from the riots happening right outside their door

to which they had purposely remained ignorant.

Two lost souls stuck within a Peter Pan

complex fall in love with their very own

Wendy. She hopes to pull them from their comfortable

world

where

nothing

changes into a living one, but it’s harder than expected. It’s a tale to which almost everyone can relate.

Louis Garrel excellently portrays the angry youth desperate to change the world. Eva Green is majestic as usual, stealing every

scene she is in. And Michael Pitt shines as an innocent stranger

falling into the arms of two wild flames.

Sensitive, passionate and intelligent, watching The Dreamers is

like watching a surreal Paris portrait come to life, a true artistic

film. Drink expensive wine and watch this criminally underrated

film, preferably with your significant other. But not for a first date,

dear God, not for a first date. Again, if full frontal makes you uncomfortable, male or female, or if the nature of the three’s

relationship upsets you, then don’t watch, but otherwise give it a try. For book worms, the film is based on the novel, The Holy

Innocents by Gilbert Adair, that has since been renamed in newer prints to match the title of the movie.

A new and exciting networking opportunity is arising in Cape Coral that is sure to have a major impact on the younger generation of business professionals.

The Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral announced its newest networking group, The Exchange, whose first-ever event will be held Tuesday, July 17th at 5:30 pm at rusty’s raw Bar and Grill. This group is targeted for the up-andcoming business leaders of Cape Coral – for all professionals 45 and younger or those young at heart.

This first event is free of charge to attendees (subsequent events will have a small entry fee)

and the event will include raffle prizes, an opportunity to introduce yourself to the group, and a round of speed networking followed by casual networking. Food and beverages will be provided courtesy of our sponsor, Chapman Insurance Group, your local, independent insurance agency who strives to provide you with the ultimate customer service and competitive insurance plans to fit your individual needs.

Founding members Krystal Bottcher of Chapman Insurance Group, Annette Warren of the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral, Kevin McNamara of Cape Style magazine, and Donna S. Germain, President and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral, all took on the task of creating this group. They will host events monthly that are aimed at offering a “mix of educational and historical components, while offering its participants opportunities to grow as community stewards,” as well as the opportunity to network with a group of like-

minded individuals in a welcoming and casual setting.

“We are at a point as a community where the next generation of leaders is starting to emerge,” said Germain. “New business owners are emerging and long-established family businesses are now run by the children and grandchildren of those families. This is the perfect time for our organization to recognize this new generation and offer them a chance to continue their growth as community leaders.”

Bottcher furthered this by stating, “We all saw a great need to create a group that was tailored to the younger professionals. regardless of that profession, you could be a realtor, a mechanic, in the service industry, running your own business or working for someone else, we are just aiming it towards those who are growing their roots here in Cape Coral. We wanted to provide them with an outlet to not only gain an education about Cape Coral, but an opportunity for them to create a unique and individual voice that will help shape the future of our community. It’s about growth for them as individuals and professionals and growth for us as a community.”

When asked what Germain hopes this will do for the future of business in Cape Coral, she stated, “Cape Coral has always had a strong business community with solid business leaders that have a deep commitment to this community. My hope for the future is that this mindset will continue into this up and coming generation.”

For further information, contact either Annette Warren with the Chamber of Commerce at Annette@capecoralchamber.com or Krystal Bottcher with Chapman Insurance Group at Krystal@cigflorida.com. You can also find The Exchange Facebook page to stay up-to-date on upcoming events, and exciting news as this new networking group grows! Please be sure to rSVP to the event on Facebook! JULY 2018
