It's also Father's Day, a time to recognize and thank all the men in our community who give of themselves each and every day, being outstanding father's to our youth. Not every child is lucky enough to have a good father, or father figure, in their lives. And studies continue to show how important that father figure is to our children. If you know of a kid in the community who is without a dad, do what you can to fill those shoes. The youth of society will thank you!

QUICK READS

By Tony Henkels

The New Odyssey - Patrick Kingsley. The author follows & interviews several refugees from the Middle East during their attempts to immigrate illegally to Europe. He believes they are all innocent refugees & should be accepted by every country & provided with food, housing & health care. ♼

Glass House - Brian Alexander. Story about Lancaster, Ohio, with an Anchor Hocking glass plant as it's major employer. It went from an All American city to a hell hole because of "financial engineering" by buy outs of Anchor, reducing wages over & over. Then drugs took a hold on the town.♼♼♼

Confidential Source Ninety Six - Roman Caribe/Robert Cea. A major trafficker in drugs flipped & worked with the government after being caught. He helped recover many millions of $$$ in cash & drugs, along with arrests of many suppliers & dealers. Interesting details of extreme dangers in both worlds.♼♼♼♼ Radical Origins - Dr. Azeem Ibrahim. The history of Islam & Muslims from the beginning to 2017. A good history showing how opposite the current Muslims are from the original covenants.♼♼♼♼

Being Hindu - Hindol Sengupta. A look at being a Hindu in modern times. Makes some comparisons to other major religions & describes the very different concept of God in the Hindu faith. ♼♼♼ Gorsuch - John Greenya. A biography about Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch. A pretty positive look at his school records, friends & career.♼♼♼ Golden Days - Jack McCallum. This is all about the L.A. Lakers & Oakland Warriors. The central character is Jerry West & his influence on both teams. 5***** for basketball fans, but maybe only 2** for others.♼♼♼

Anesthesia - Kate Cole-Adams. An in depth look at various forms of anesthesia & its effect on the brain. Quite interesting, but a tedious read about how our brains function. ♼♼

The Unwomanly Face of War - Svetlana Alexievich. An oral history of many Soviet women serving in their army in WW2 from nurses to snipers.♼♼♼

The Smear - Charyl Attkisson. About mostly political lies, accusations of all kinds against political opponents since the beginning of our country. Covering events starting with David Bork being selected for Supreme Court. It pretty much crucifies a lot of politicians, culminating with the Trump saga.♼♼♼♼

BEER

From The Brewer.......

English Bitter By Alexander Sarames Master Brewer, Big Blue Brewing

As the Pale Ale is to America, the Bitter Ale is to England. A personal favorite of mine, the English Bitter combines malt and hops into an almost unbelievable balance and can only be described as perfection.

8

CAPESTYLEMAG.COM

Lovingly dispensed from a slightly lower than room temperature cask via a pull style hand pump is the favored method of enjoying this beer. Utilizing industry-revered English Malt, the soul of the beer should be the robust and full character imparted by the simplistic combination of high quality grains.

The often-used Kent region style hops should be apparent, but not overwhelming, and there in lies an age-old argument: is it a Bitter or a Pale Ale? A frequent discussion among fans of both styles often results in the agreement of hop usage and, sometimes more importantly, method of dispensing. Subtleties are contributed by water profile, often hard, while centuries of selective yeast propagation might be a more significant contributor. Fruitiness is expected, but not overwhelming, another contribution from the yeast. Bitters are often separated in to 3 categories depending on original gravity (pre-fermentation sugar to water ratio) and alcohol content along with a complementing hop rate that ensure a respective balance. These three categories are Bitter, Special or Best Bitter, and Extra Special Bitter. They vary in alcohol content and hop bitterness units.

Bitter has an alcohol level of around 4% and 35 IBU, Special or Best Bitter around 4.6% and 50 IBU and finally Extra Special Bitter or ESB, around 6% and 50 IBU.

The English Bitter is also the forerunner in the push to bring back cask condition real ales, so go enjoy both a piece of history in the making and a personal favorite!

Honey, I got hit by a car outside of the office. Paula brought me to the Hospital. They have been doing tests and taking Xrays. The blow to my head, though very strong, will not have any serious or lasting injury. But, I have three broken ribs, a broken arm, a compound fracture in the left leg, and they may have to amputate the right foot. Wife’s Response: Who is Paula?

I was at the airport, checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked, 'Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?' To which I replied, 'If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?' He smiled knowingly and nodded, 'That's why we ask.'

Chris Cammarota,

HOMETOWN HERO

US Navy

Born on Nov 2, 1960, Chris Cammarota was welcomed into an Irish-Italian family, the only boy and youngest of six children. He grew up in Rosedale, Queens, in a working class neighborhood made up of mainly row houses.

Chris enlisted in the Navy on September 28, 1978, following in his father's footsteps by serving his country. (His dad was a paratrooper and a screaming eagle who jumped into Normandy on June 6, 1944.) After basic training, he received orders to report to the USS Nimitz CVN-68 in January, 1979. The Nimitz was the biggest, baddest, newest nuclear aircraft carrier on the planet. Chris eventually ended up working on the flight deck fueling F-14 fighters.

In 1979, Hollywood filmed the movie “The Final Countdown” on board the Nimitz. Chris had a small part in the motion picture, alongside stars Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen.

On November 4th, 1979, the US Embassy in Tehran, was taken over by Iranian terrorists. This was the start of 444 days of captivity that 50 American hostages had to endure. On November 5th, the Nimitz was deployed to the Indian Ocean.

Once the ship arrived on “Gonzo Station,” plans were made in Washington for a rescue attempt from the Nimitz to save the American hostages. This unfortunately ended in tragedy in the Iranian desert, resulting in 8 American deaths. The Nimitz ended up spending 144 days a sea, a record not seen since World War II.

In the fall of 1980, the Nimitz embarked on a NATO cruise, where the ship visited Germany, Spain and England. 1981 brought the Nimitz back into the Mediterranean as the flagship of the 7th Fleet. This cruise brought the ship close to the coast of Libya, and Muammar Gaddafi, and resulted in the Nimitz shooting down 2 Libyan aircraft. Chris still has a t-shirt that proudly reads “US 2, Libya 0.”

On May 15th, the Nimitz was stationed off the coast of Florida. On this day, Chris was promoted to Flight Deck Control, meaning he was in charge of fueling/de-fueling all 100 aircraft on board. He replaced his friend Dennis Driscoll, who was demoted. Eleven days later, on May 26th, the Nimitz endured a catastrophic flight deck crash resulting in 14 dead and 49 wounded. Dennis was killed at the age of 21. But for the grace of God, that could have been Chris. Chris finished his tour in the US Navy, and on September 8, 1982, he received his honorable discharge.

After Chris' stint in the navy (78-82), he worked at JFK International Airport in New York. He made his first visit to Cape Coral in 1984, vowing to return someday to make it his home. On the 4th of July, 1988, he met Josie on a blind date. It was love at first sight. They were married on September 8th, 1990, and moved to Cape Coral from a one bedroom basement apartment in December, 1991. He transferred from New York with Federal Express.

In July 1996, Chris and Josie started a "Music & Entertainment" business, Juke Box Hero, and welcomed their first child, Daniella. Christopher followed in December, 1999. Over the years he has always tried to get involved in his community, from Meals on Wheels to the United Way, and pro bono “gigs” for special needs groups to veterans groups to political clubs. Sometimes May 26th (the anniversary of the fatal crash on the Nimitz) falls on Memorial Day. As each year comes and goes, Chris reflects on that day in 1981. He thanks God every day for having the opportunity to raise his right hand and take an oath to protect and serve his country and its constitution. Chris feels truly blessed to live in this beautiful city, have the nicest wife, and two healthy kids. CAPESTYLEMAG.COM

Cape Resident Al Rich Runs in Honor of

#SimmondsStrong Twenty six miles. Nearly the distance from the Cape Coral Bridge to

the Sanibel Lighthouse. Most who opt to travel that distance do so by

vehicle. Al Rich, a Cape Coral resident and financial advisor with the

Nolte Wealth Management Group of Wells Fargo Advisors in Fort

Myers, chose to run that distance. He was one of the 26,948 athletes

who participated in the 2018 Boston Marathon.

Al ran not for himself, but as a member of the #SimmondsStrong team. This is a group in memory of Dennis Simmonds, a Boston Police officer

wounded during the aftermath of the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing.

DJ, as he was called, suffered a traumatic head injury during a shootout

with the suspects, an injury that later caused the fatal brain aneurysm that ended his life. DJ passed away just days before he was to receive

a National Association of Police Organizations Top Cop Award.

Despite his connection to the events of the Boston Bombing, Dennis

Simmonds is not mentioned as one of those who died in the tragedy.

His name is conspicuously absent from both the memorial to the fallen

and the 2016 film “Patriot Day.”

“I never wanted to run a marathon before,” said Rich, a former high

school and college athlete, “but upon hearing DJ’s story, I knew I

needed to do anything I could to help the family out.” Al, a veteran

officer himself, served 10 years as Patrol Sergeant with the Laramie

Police Department, in Wyoming.

Al heard about the story of the “Forgotten Officer” through a

colleague.

Learning that shortly after Simmonds’ death his sister Nicole had

founded a scholarship in her brother’s name, Rich felt compelled, as a

brother in blue, to run to raise money for the charity. He also wanted

to bring awareness of Simmonds' tragic death. Al Rich asked for, and received, a spot in the race within days.

“Simmonds’ story tugged at my heart. Everyone who puts on that

badge or works in a department becomes part of a family. We never

forget when an officer gives their life in the service of others. Never,” Rich said. “The pain that the Simmonds family has gone through is

unimaginable. I simply couldn’t pass up this opportunity to help him get the recognition he deserves.”

12

CAPESTYLEMAG.COM

JUNE 2018

Rich, when he runs, usually tracks 3-4 miles, 3 times a week. He began

seriously training for the marathon late last year, despite persistent knee

problems and other injuries. He increased his running, peaking at thirty-eight miles in one week. His training included using bridges to

develop the stamina needed to conquer the challenge of “Heartbreak

Hill,” occurring 20 miles into the race. This steep incline rising half a

mile, as well as the succession of little hills that follow over the next four miles, make up the toughest stretch on the Boston Marathon course. It is this final leg that is especially punishing to the runners’ legs.

“I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but that’s not the point,” Rich said.

“This is about supporting the Simmonds family, as well as everyone who risks their life to serve our communities.”

“When I ‘hit the wall’”, as runners say when things grow toughest, “and

my body begged me to quit, I thought about DJ, how much he would

love to be here today, feeling anything; how his family would love to see him again. This alone gave me the motivation to finish.”

Rich also chose to run the race because of what this would mean to his kids.

“We are a service-oriented family. We give to charity and help where

we can. I wanted to model this attitude for my kids.”

While they did not attend the race, Karmen (10) and Garett (7), cheered

their dad on in spirit. Rich also drew inspiration from his wife, Erica, as

well other family members who pitched in where they could to help.

Upon hearing of Al’s intentions, they supported him by either accompanying him to Boston, helping with the kids, or paying his travel expenses, allowing him to focus on the task at hand.

“I would have done this in Florida or elsewhere, wherever I was needed.

It just so happens that I signed up for, as a friend calls it, ‘The Superbowl of Marathons.’ This was not about me, however; it was about them,” he said, referring to the Simmonds family.

Al Rich continues to run today, a workout he now enjoys because of

his experience in Boston, staying in shape, perhaps for the next race.

A man of service, to his community, to his family, to his brothers-inblue, Al Rich, a noble, yet humble paladin, awaits his next challenge,

ready to give his all to help his fellow man.

AJ GROSS CAPE KIDS WITH

Submitted by Jaimie Gross

Meet AJ Gross, a 17-year-old who just graduated from North Fort Myers High School for the Performing Arts. AJ was born in Pittsburgh while his parents, Adam and Jamie, lived there with his sister for one year, before moving back to Cape Coral.

After being invited to audition for nearly a dozen schools, including NYU, Chapman (in California) and Julliard, AJ is choosing to attend Point Park University in Pittsburgh as one of 14 accepted for the BFA Acting program in the Conservatory for the Performing Arts. They offered the best merit scholarship and there is a lot of family in the area. AJ’s long term goal is to be on the big screen, but he literally loves every aspect of acting.

As a kid, AJ used to always imagine being someone else or in another world; he didn’t fit in with other kids because his mind was always “somewhere else” in his head. His family knew he was different. In 3rd grade, AJ was diagnosed with being Bipolar; he was getting either A's or F's on every piece of work he turned in at school. It depended on the day, how he felt, as to what he could do. AJ started medication which made his extremes minimal, but he was still either up or down emotionally.

AJ states that he has been blessed to find an outlet for all of the crazy, emotional feelings and inner turmoil that being bipolar can cause. He tried every sport as a kid, but being bipolar made him feel that he was always letting a teammate down. Luckily, he found a hip-hop dance class at Robin Dawn Dance Academy. He loved it, and he added ballet, lyrical, acro and jazz through the years.

In middle school, AJ was thrust into an acting class at Challenger Middle and, in one day, his life changed forever. There was no judgment and people were considered great if they could portray someone or something else, something AJ had been doing his whole life. AJ started living and breathing the world of

acting. There he could express his deep feelings and shout the extreme joy.

As he entered high school, AJ decided to give sports another try. He made the freshman football team, and was on varsity by sophomore year as a defensive end. The football coaches made all of the linemen wrestle in the offseason. That was where AJ learned even more about himself, finding team success with an individual sport.

With wrestling, AJ learned how to eat properly to maintain weight and he completely changed his body. AJ became a leader in varsity wrestling. He earned the “coaches award” his junior year and was one of the captains his senior year. AJ said wrestling taught him self-discipline that he will carry throughout life.

In a little over five years, he played varsity sports through high school, was a member of NHS with a weighted GPA of 4.06, a member of Faith Presbyterian Church’s youth group, and has gone to West Virginia on a mission trip to rebuild homes for those in need. AJ has acted in over 25 shows, starting with Creative Theater Workshop, and included shows such as Beauty and the Beast, 13 The Musical, Little Mermaid, Little Shop of Horrors. He’s also worked at the Alliance of the Arts and City Scenes theater in Sweeney Todd and Almost, Maine. He is in his fourth show at the Florida Repertory Theater. This year he was the winner of the the Rep's inaugural college scholarship. Last summer, AJ was one of 18 accepted to NYU for film acting and he hopes to end up there again to finish his degree and start his career in acting. If you'd like more information on how AJ was able to get his career started, check out www.facebook.com/CreativeTheater/ and www.crowdrise.com/o/en/campaign/creative-theaterworkshop?utm_campaign=oc&utm_medium=facebook&utm_so urce=crowdrise CAPESTYLEMAG.COM

WINE

he Loire Valley in France may not be

white, rose and sparkling wines in a wide range

Burgundy, but that doesn’t mean its wines are

and dry white wines crafted from Chenin Blanc

quite as famous as its grape growing neighbors Bordeaux, Champagne and

any less revered around the world.

The Loire Valley is the westernmost wine region

in France and it encompasses the banks spanning the entire 300 miles of the Loire River,

the longest river in the country. Although the Loire Valley is only half as large as Bordeaux in

terms of acreage under vine, the sheer expanse

of the vineyards commands that there will be

vastly different terroirs and subsequently diverse wine styles produced in this territory.

Of the four distinct regions that comprise the

Loire Valley, the Pays Nantais is the furthest

west, located at the mouth of the Loire River

where it empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Due

TheLure of the Loire

to its close proximity to the sea, this area contends with a brisk maritime climate, making

grapes are specialties of this area and are considered to be among the world’s finest

when compared to their counterparts from other domains.

Further east of Anjou-Saumur is another

locality in the central Loire Valley called

Touraine. Within this area, there is a notable

stylistic departure between the wines of the

western portion and the more easterly sections. While the famous wine region, Vouvray,

dominates the west with its stellar Chenin Blanc wines, the star of the east is Sauvignon Blanc. Similarly, red wines in the west are mostly based

on the Cabernet Franc grape whereas the red

grapes of choice in the east are predominantly

Gamay and Pinot Noir. This is reflective of the changing climate as the valley winds its way

inland away from the moderating influences of the ocean.

Bunching Tax Deductions to Maximize Their Benefit Submitted by Rebecca A. Ross

An old technique has new value after the Tax Reform bill, Part 2

RESTORING THE BENEFIT OF ITEMIZED DEDUCTIONS

All may not be lost when it comes to maximizing the benefit of

these expenses, in particular charitable contributions. Through a technique known as bunching, a taxpayer can keep their total

expenses the same, but increase their total tax deductions over

multiple years. Under bunching a taxpayer delays a year’s worth

of charitable giving from one year to the next, but then gives

double the amount to charity in that second year. The total giving

stays the same, but the total tax deductions claimed are increased.

DONOR-ADVISED FUNDS

A partial solution to that issue is to consider gifting to a donor-

advised fund (DAF). A DAF is a charitable entity, equivalent to a private foundation, but without the setup expense or ongoing

tax filing responsibilities. Contributions to the fund are taxdeductible in the year of the gift, but the funds remain in the

account until the donor decides to make distributions to a

recognized charity. Donors can spread their grant-making over many years if they so wish, although the donation to the DAF is

a completed gift and the funds can’t ever be reclaimed by the donor.

A DAF can be ideal in cases where a taxpayer front-loads multiple years of charitable giving into one tax year but isn’t interested in immediately

transferring

the

funds

to

the

charitable

organizations. While the funds remain in the DAF, they can be invested to grow over time, providing even more funds to transfer to charity in the future. DAFs are becoming a common tool for managing larger charitable gifts, but there are many

things to consider before opening an account (such as

investment options, expenses related to the fund and rules for

making donations). Your Financial Advisor can provide more information on the donor-advised fund options available.

MOVIE REVIEW

There are so many ways, too many, to say how weird Yorgos

Lanthimos’s new film is that I’m nearly tempted to warn people

instead of encouraging them to watch it and save them from

being haunted by such a disturbance.

Fans of Lanthimos’s previous film, The Lobster, will enjoy this

unique artsy piece, but the average movie goer will not. The best way to describe the film in a few words is a dark, eerie complexity

of a story that will either break your heart, confuse you, anger everyone in your household or leave you astounded. It’s odd,

but every little detail that makes it so is clearly intentional and

does it well, stripping humanity of their emotions and souls

,revealing them for the beasts, not savage beasts, but basic animals that they are.

explored because that is not the story, but rather consequences

and what happens when that consequence not only becomes deadly but demands the impossible.

The movie dives into people’s deepest fears and what comes out when faced with those fears. There are two children, newcomer

actors Raffey Cassidy and Sunny Suljic, who are normal, callow and innocent children, but when a desperate and angry need blooms from within them both, their naivete and virtue are laid exposed in some heart wrenching sequences intensified by a

stillness that lingers within every scene.

The famed Colin Farrell brings the same oddball man he brought

to the screen many times before, and does well, projecting a man

unwilling to take responsibility, mixing pity with indifference. You

Even the dialogue is strange. The words spoken by the characters

being so careless and clueless. Though Killing of a Sacred Deer is a dark, poetic piece of art, telling a story no one wants to live,

looking villain with the face of sad innocence, but with a mind that is emotionless but sympathizing. He is more of a balancing

The movie is loosely based on the Greek play, Iphigenia in Aulis,

which itself is based on a story that took place during the Trojan

War about the sacrifice of Iphigenia at the hands of her father. In the story, a Greek commander is sailing to Troy to fight in the

battle but encounters the wrath of Artemis and is unable to, so

to appease her, he sacrifices his own daughter and can then sail

to Troy. If that doesn’t say enough about Killing of a Sacred Deer, then nothing can.

The plot, like in the Greek tragedy, starts when a doctor appears

to be responsible for the death of a patient and invokes the wrath

of the dead man’s son. The backstory of the dead patient and

the issue of whether the doctor truly was responsible is never

There is no gore, not much blood, which is where most people go when they hear the word “disturbing” regarding a movie. It’s

more of the subject matter that will darken your thoughts rather

than the images. Fair warning though, the first scene is a graphic

open-heart surgery. Slow, drawn out and sharp, there is no

action whatsoever, no romantic plot, and does not include a single humorous line. In fact, if your’re watching this movie with someone and they start laughing, run away.

Take caution, this one will make you think hard.

Heat Awareness Month Syncope

Submitted by Joseph Freedman, M.D. Cardiac Care Group

Living in Florida, we are typically accustomed to warmer days than most of the country, but during the spring and summer months, our typical 80-degree weather can skyrocket to high 90’s and even triple digits, which can leave us feeling overheated very quickly. It’s important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, as well as avoiding the extreme heat during the mid afternoon. If you exercise, it’s often best to do an indoor workout activity or swim in the pool during excessive heat and humidity, which can be a real danger to many of us, especially the elderly.

Syncope is a fancy medical term for fainting. Syncope can occur due to many different complications but is commonly seen due to heat exhaustion. What happens is, the body’s oxygen and blood are not able to adequately reach the brain, usually due to a drastic change in blood pressure, which creates a pooling of blood into the lower extremities, and this will cause collapsing and fainting. If the person is not put in a reclined position with the feet elevated, they could potentially suffer additional complications including a seizure. Syncope can quickly escalate into a dangerous outcome for many individuals. If you have any heart irregularities, you may be more susceptible to these types of fainting spells.

Taking precautions during these upcoming hotter months is critical. If you feel any of the following symptoms, you should sit down, elevate your legs above your heart, take deep breaths and get to a cool place, drink water, or call 911 if your symptoms do not dissipate. Syncope Symptoms • Nausea • Excessive sweating • Weakness • Swollen calves, feet or ankles • Falling over • Fainting

Some types of syncope are medically life threatening. People with a family history of heart disease, palpitations, and cardiac irregularities should make an appointment with their cardiologist for an updated EKG, Stress test, Holter monitor testing, or electrocardiogram to better control their risk factors for suffering from fainting spells.
