Our Cover Artist Mark Herron
MR Herron is an author and commercial illustrator. For 35 years, he’s lent his skills to clients like McDonald’s, Wendy’s, several bestselling authors and Delta Airline's magazine Fantastic Flyer. His experience runs the gamut from decorating Happy Meal boxes to outsidethe-box children’s books. His political ‘toons’ are a feature of national radio talk show host Rusty Humphries, while his editorial illustrations enhance the words of Rush Limbaugh in his infamous Limbaugh Letter. Herron’s quirky sense of humor evolved from his many Huck Finn-type adventures as a child growing up in Mississippi, to hitchhiking crosscountry. In 1977, he moved to St. Thomas, where he was employed as first mate for a local charter captain. The daily voyages provided the perfect opportunity to collect odd stories. Eventually, Herron found himself in Hotlanta, where he took a job in an illustration sweatshop that catered to large national companies.
There he honed his skills, learning to emulate different artistic styles, as well as the harsh discipline of crunch deadlines and frequent allnighters. On the side, he designed packaging for worldwide companies like Brainy Baby and created the lovable OrganWise Guys characters that teach kids good eating habits and how to live healthy lifestyles.
MR (Mark Robert, if you were wondering) just moved to Cape Coral from Atlanta and has embraced our community. His art is featured on the cover of our magazine this month. He’s currently working with the new Cape Coral Animal Shelter with a cartoon series “FurBalls,” while simultaneously developing “The Snowbirds,” a somewhat surreal look at those like himself who have migrated to our sunny shores and are ‘Living the Dream’ in this Floridian paradise. His art can be seen at Frame Gallery & Gifts on Del Prado Blvd and at Lorne's Gallery at Tarpon Point Marina.

In less than 10 years (2007) a major venture capital firm

This Misery Bay IPA is named after all the hardships endured
the past. The strong hops (bitterness) up

complex, delightful beer. I have 5 more to go and at 6.5%

Though Misery Bay IPA isn’t an award winner, Erie Brewing
does have a couple of distinguished medals. Their Railbender

from Great American Beer Festival in Colorado, which is no
small feat.

Meet Kevin McCauley, US Air Force
Kevin McCauley hails originally from Long Island, NY and Vermont. He’s lived in Cape Coral for 15 years.
Kevin joined the Air Force in 1986 and served for 4 years. He trained in Lowery AFB in Denver and Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, then was stationed in Kunsan AFB in South Korea, as well as Moody AFB in Valdosta, GA. He was
discharged early while stationed at Moody AFB and medically classified as an E-4.
Homes for Heroes SWFL is where Kevin dedicates his life now, a real estate business where they specialize working
with veterans, first responders and teachers and provide closing cost assistance. Kevin is also actively involved in AMVETS, DAV and the SWFL Military Museum.
Caring for others comes naturally for Kevin. He used to own daycare centers in Vermont, and the foster system
was a perfect fit for him. Kevin was a foster parent for over 7 years to a bunch of teens, many of whom he is still
in touch with today. In fact, his son TJ was adopted through the foster care system. He has a Masters Degree in Business.
Kevin has been married to Farah McCauley for 10 years and they have 5 children (his, hers and theirs): Emilie
24, TJ 23, Katarina 22, Keagan 18 and Isabella 11. Their favorite thing to do in the Cape is spending time with
family and friends, biking and enjoying the weather we have. Kevin is also involved with many events throughout Cape Coral, where you will usually see him and his brightly logo’d Homes for Heroes vehicle.
Thank you, Kevin, for your service to our country and for your continued service to our veterans. You may not serve IN the military right now, but you are still actively serving those who are. You are a Hometown Hero! CapeStyle Magazine│May 2017

DON’T FEAR THE WEIGHTS WHY YOU SHOULD BE LIFTING

weight lifting should be part of your current exercise routine for a number of reasons. Hopefully this article will help alleviate your fears
of lifting weights and you will discover that lifting weights can
actually change your life as well as your physique. You Will Not Become Bulky
Weightlifting is Fun
Weight lifting can definitely be intimidating, don’t get me wrong.
Walk into any fitness center and you are surrounded by fancy
machines, powerlifting racks, cardio machines, and sometimes even
TRX straps. If you are completely new to exercise and weight lifting,
First off, the notion that females who lift weights will become “bulky”

is inherently untrue. Females cannot physiologically build huge testosterone which is one of the primary hormones responsible for
muscle gain. Men are able to gain more muscle due to the fact that their bodies naturally produce greater levels of testosterone, and very
low levels of estrogen. Why Lift Weights

If you make weight lifting and the gym a FUN place to go it will allow
you to build an even better relationship with your friend and keep each other accountable.
If your schedule is a limiting factor to
working out with someone, don’t fret! Do your research online, or
consult with a personal trainer to help you start your fitness journey,
you will not regret it.
Improves Metabolism
Lifting weights properly with the right intensity also has been
shown to improve metabolism! By lifting weights consistently,
your lean muscle mass will increase slowly over time. Since
muscle is such a dense tissue, muscle cells use more energy than
normal tissue cells to maintain their structure and function
properly. Though the increase in metabolism isn’t huge, it is still
enough of a reason to make lifting part of your routine!
Another form of resistance training, known as “High Intensity Interval Training” or “HIIT” is also very effective at keeping that
metabolism revving away.
This kind of training involves
performing all out exercise for a bout of 10-45 seconds, followed
by a rest interval of 45-2 minutes, performed for sets ranging
from 4-10. Though this kind of training is short, it is not for
the faint of heart or mind, but it is definitely worth it! Studies
show that HIIT actually causes your metabolism to continue to
be elevated even after you are done exercising. Are you sold
yet?!
Insulin Sensitivity
Weightlifting can also improve insulin sensitivity – causing your
body to become more efficient at utilizing glucose for fuel.
What does this mean for you? Well, your body will be able to
A More Tailored Approach for Women
use glucose (sugar) more efficiently – giving you more energy,
better workouts, a better mood, better sleep, and the list goes
on!
Since weight training depletes muscle glycogen during
training bouts, more of the carbs you eat will be used to
replenish your muscle glycogen fuel stores. Bone Density Benefits
Are you already thin and in shape yet still question whether you
want to lift weights? Well, weight lifting can also improve bone
density. Young and old, everyone can appreciate maintaining
and improving bone mass. As you age, your bones become less and less dense, which is unpreventable.
This is especially
important for females, whose risk of osteoporosis goes up after menopause.
However, lifting moderate to heavy weights every week can help
maintain bone density and slow the effects of aging. Among the

One of the more unique aspects of Sherry that dierentiates it from traditional
wine production is that once fortiďŹ ed, it is aged in a complex system of barrels
known as a Solera. Large oak casks resting horizontally are stacked atop each other in rows. The oldest Sherry resides in the bottom row and newer Sherries
in decreasing age ďŹ ll the rows above with the youngest Sherry occupying the top row. Every vintage, a portion of the lowest (oldest) row is removed and
bottled for consumption. A share of the next oldest Sherry takes its place in the
bottom row with each row above contributing some contents to the row directly below it. Brand new Sherry is added to the barrels on the top level. This
fractional removal and blending of the Sherry during its multi-year migration through the rows allows the collective age of the Sherry to increase. So, labels
on higher end Sherries are likely to designate the age of the Solera as opposed to highlighting the year of the vintage of that particular Sherry.
So, if you are looking to add something dierent to your tasting repertoire, diversify your wine collection with some of Spain’s most historic fortiďŹ ed wines.
That way if you ever host the Cranes for dinner, you can happily inquire, “Sherry, Niles?

it is divided into 3 districts with 5 zones per district.

In June, Gavin will learn how to walk all over again. He’ll
be undergoing a major surgery where he’ll be in ICU for
3 days, then 1 month in rehab, and in physical therapy 8 hours a day, five days a week. But this procedure is
not going to get in his way. He has many gifts and now the odds are with him because he knows the best tools
for success: a determination to accomplish his goals
and a supportive team. That team includes his twin
brother Kyler, who has been by his side since the day he was born; his parents, who run and cheer him on;
his grandparents, who are triathletes (including a
grandfather who overcame MS by changing his diet and exercise); and his ever-growing circle of family and
friends.
Gavin DiMaria is a young man with an outgoing,
thoughtful and strong spirit who inspires all he meets.

Cape Coral pastor takes on the Appalachian Trail Pastor Tom Hafer, director of spiritual services for Gulf Coast Village in Cape Coral and ordained minister with Volunteers of America (VOA), began a 2,190-mile journey along the Appalachian Trail on April 24 at Springer Mountain in Georgia and will conclude the trip on October 15 at Mount Katahdin in Maine. Following his motto, “care for yourself to better care for others,” Hafer is taking on a six-month journey dedicated to mental, physical and spiritual well-being.
Taking on the Appalachian Trail is no easy feat for a man in his 50s. To complete the thru-hike journey within six months, Hafer will hike approximately 15-20 miles each day, and will follow a special diet that will replenish the additional calories he will burn on a daily basis. People can follow along Hafer’s journey via Facebook at www.facebook.com/TomHaferSpeaker.

Jr. Leadership Healthcare Day and Graduation After almost six months. the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral
graduated its 18th Jr. Leadership Class with twenty-eight high school juniors completing the program. The students last day started out with a
trip to Cape Coral Hospital, which was filled with tours and a presentation
from Scott Kashman, CAO of the hospitals in the Lee Health system. Scott Kashman is also known for his tireless efforts to promote a healthy life-
style. Mr. Kashman challenged the students to do thirty push-ups, thirty burpees, thirty sit-ups and 10 jumping jacks in one day, and for their reward they were given healthy eating and exercise books.
Next, the students went to Gulf Coast Village to learn about their purpose
in our community and how both the hospital system and Gulf Coast Village work together to meet our area’s growing health care needs. As part of
their experience, the students got to exercise with the Gulf Coast Village population where they quickly discovered that it was not going to be as
easy as they thought. Executive Director Kevin Ahmadi spoke at length
about career opportunities in senior care as care giving institutions struggle
to meet the growing needs of the silver tsunami.
In the evening, the Jr. Leadership families gathered to watch the philanthropic presentations that the students created from their research
of four not-for-profit charities: Lifeline Family Center, Cape Coral Caring
Center, Street Chicks and Cape Coral Special Pops. The students, with the
support of the Cape Coral Community Foundation, designated $1,500 to
both the Cape Coral Caring Center and Cape Coral Special Pops. Another
highlight of graduation was long-time Cape Coral resident and
philanthropist Elmer Tabor who was the guest speaker. His message focused on the importance of relationships and an appreciation for everyone’s contribution to our society.
It is the hope of the coordinators of Jr Leadership that the students have
learned about what it takes to make a city, career opportunities and
philanthropy. This program would not be possible without the generous
support of the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral and its members. We
hope that each of these students will help to pass along the gift of

his service as Chairman, President Michael Chatman and Brian Gomer
recognized four outgoing board members for their contributions, including John Bobb, Wealth Manager; MerriBeth Farnham, Public Relations and
Marketing Consultant; Steve Riggs, Retired Business Executive; and Marty Warhol, Estate Planning Attorney.
The evening concluded with a short tribute to Michel Doherty, recipient of the
2017 Elmer Tabor Generosity Award. Brian Gomer also announced Dennis
Gingerich, Founding Pastor at Cape Christian Fellowship Church as incoming
Board Chairman.
Gingerich said he is very much looking forward to his new role. He plans to work in partnership with the staff to increase the amount of grants given to
help nonprofit organizations, and helping churches and nonprofits start their

Happy 103rd Birthday to
Mary Whitmore
More than 25 visitors and Gulf Coast Village residents and staff came together on Friday, March 31 to celebrate the 103rd birthday of resident, Mary Whitmore. The room was decorated with colorful bouquets of balloons, pink and white streamers, and a birthday celebration banner on the wall. Attendees were greeted by the sound of 1920s jazz as they entered the birthday celebration. Upon entering the room, Mary was overjoyed to find three tables filled with guests. She was especially surprised to see a few of her church family members sitting at her table. Mary has been a member of Grace Baptist Church for more than 28 years. Prior to her husband Al’s passing more than 10 years ago, the Whitmores attended weekly bible study brought to Gulf Coast Village by Grace Baptist Church. The members of Grace Baptist Church grew very fond of Mary and Al throughout the years and the church soon became their family. “Since Al’s passing, the members of Grace Baptist Church have and will always be there for Mary,” said Barb Reisinger, Grace Baptist Church member. “We are her family.” The celebration began with a few remarks from Frank Giliberti, a Grace Baptist Church member. Followed by Wayne Schwartz, Gulf Coast Village life-enhancement coordinator, asking Mary to share her secret for longevity. Mary laughed and quickly responded, “Oh my God!” The room chuckled and Carmen Giliberti, a Grace Baptist Church member said, “It certainly is God!” After a bit of encouraging, Mary finally shared her secret to longevity is simply enjoying life. “I just had a good life and here I am.” As the cake made its way to Mary and the lights were dimmed, Wayne grabbed a guitar and prompted the room to join in singing the infamous birthday song. Following the cake, several gifts were placed in front of Mary. She was delighted to open the gifts and see her favorite candies from her church family and an outfit from her friends at Gulf Coast Village. As the celebration came to a close, Mary was humbled that so many people came to celebrate her on her special day and expressed her appreciation.
