5 W’s of Sunscreen

Spring is approaching, and most Floridians will soon be

spending more time outdoors. Do you know the 5 W’s of

sunscreen to help protect yourself and family members? Get familiar, your skin will thank you!

Who should wear sunscreen?

Everyone! 1 in 5 Americans will develop a skin cancer in their

lifetime. UV damage caused from sun exposure affects all skin

types. Skin cancer does not discriminate between age, race

or gender.

What type of sunscreen should I use?

Use

a

broad-spectrum

sunscreen

that

protects against UVA and UVB damage (the sun emits both.) You also want to make sure your SPF or Sun Protection Factor is 30 or higher and is water resistant. Key ingredients to look for in your sunscreen are Zinc

Oxide, and Titanium Dioxide. They

are minerals that sit on top of the

skin and help to disperse and reflect the sun’s UV rays.

Liquid or spray sunscreen are both

fine, you just want to make sure if you

use the spray type sunscreen that you rub it in so you don’t miss any areas.

6

CapeStyle Magazine│April 2017

When should I apply sunscreen?

Sunscreen should be applied every morning to face, head and

neck. If you plan to be outdoors for longer than 15 minutes

(that is how long it takes for the skin to start burning) you

should apply to all sun exposed areas.

Reapplication is also very important and should be done every

2 hours while in the sun. If you towel off from being in the

water or sweating, sunscreen should be reapplied.

Why should I wear sunscreen?

Sunscreen is one of the only things that can help

to protect our skin from UV damage that causes skin cancers besides sun avoidance.

It is also the BEST antiaging product on the market.

How should I apply sunscreen?

Most sunscreens need to be applied 15 minutes before exposure to sun.

Approximately 1oz of sunscreen or

the amount it takes to fill a shot glass

should be applied to cover body.

Make sure to rub sunscreen into skin

and don’t spray sunscreen directly onto

your face. Spray a small amount into your

hand and apply to face.

The truth about gaining muscle

and

First of all, there are a lot of articles all over the internet and various

magazines telling you that you can gain muscle and lose weight at the same time if you just buy this supplement or do this routine.

These are lies, and I'm going to tell you why and tell you the right

way to accomplish these goals.

Ignore bodybuilders and models For someone trying to live a normal lifestyle, there is no point

losing weight

Now, it is possible to build muscle without gaining weight, and to do

that you need to be in the gym 4-5 days per week, for 45 minutes

to an hour, putting some good stress on your muscles for bulking.

If you're trying to lean out or cut, it's all about burning. Your

workouts need to be focused on burning as many calories as possible.

certainly an illusion. Usually the models have been airbrushed and

photo shopped almost beyond recognition. In real life they aren't actually that big, or that cut, or that thin. Stop comparing yourself to the legs on that model, or the abs on that actor, because it's

probably spray painted, and if it is real, it's because that person spend six months dedicated to achieving that body. Gaining muscle vs. losing weight

The difference between "bulking" and "leaning out", or gaining

muscle and losing weight, is that when you're bulking, you need a

calorie surplus, and when you're leaning out you need a calorie

For building muscle, you need to consume more calories than you

burn. It's important not to consume empty calories from sugars and

sauces, and protein is necessary for building muscle, but without a

calorie surplus you will not grow. Two different goals

The truth is, you cannot gain muscle and lose weight at the same

For the best results, most people find three months of bulking

Ingredients

IE

• 1 cup (226g) salted butter, cold and diced into 1 Tbsp pieces* • 2/3 cup (142g) granulated sugar • 1/2 tsp almond extract • 2 1/4 cups (318g) all-purpose flour (scoop and level flour to measure) • 2 1/2 Tbsp (30g) nonpareils sprinkles (any color), then about 1/2 Tbsp more for tops if desired

Directions

• Butter a 13 by 9-inch baking dish and line with 2 sheets of parchment paper (one horizontally and one vertically. I also like to butter between parchment sheets so they stick) leaving a 1-inch over hang on all sides, set aside. • In the bowl of an electric stand mixer cream together butter and sugar until well combined. Mix in almond extract. With mixer set on low speed slowly add in flour and mix until combined (it will take a while and will appear dry and sandy at first but it will start to come together). Mix and fold in sprinkles. Press dough into an even layer in prepared pan (I did it with my hands first then used the bottom of a flat measuring cup to help smooth it out). Chill dough in refrigerator 20 - 30 minutes. Meanwhile preheat oven to 350 degrees. • Lift dough from pan using parchment overhang on all sides. Cut into 1/2-inch squares using a large sharp knife (it works best to just cut long rows). Sprinkle more sprinkles over the top if desired and gently press into dough. Transfer about 1/3 of the cookies to an unbuttered baking sheet (also do not line pan with parchment or silicone liners) and scatter cookies out spacing cookies 1/2-inch apart. Bake in preheated oven 8 - 12 minutes (keep remaining that aren't currently baking refrigerated). Repeat process with remaining bites, adding them to a cool baking sheet. Cool completely then transfer to an airtight container and store at room temperature. • *Unsalted butter will work great too. Simply whisk in 1/2 tsp salt with the flour before adding if using unsalted butter. Yield: About 335 bites Recipe source: inspired by Land O Lakes

Imagine that,

Priorat!

A

heavyweight contender in the wine industry,

Spain is the world’s third largest producer of wine.

While the names of some of Spain’s more

prominent wine regions are not as easily recognized as

those of France or Italy, you’d be hard-pressed to find

even the most casual wine drinker who hasn’t heard of the

infamous Rioja region. Rioja is one of only two wine

regions in Spain to have achieved the highest quality level designation. Priorat, located in the Northeastern area of

the country, is the other less well-known superstar.

All wine producing countries in the European Union follow

a benchmark rating system that separates quality wine from table wine, but there are variations in standards and

terminology among each country. For Spain, its table wine

is divided into two caliber levels – the basic “Vinos de Mesa “(Table Wine) and the slightly higher standard “Vinos de la Tierra” (Country Wine.) Spain’s quality wines

are divided into four category levels – the up and coming wine region “Vinos de Calidad con Indicacion Geographica”

(VCIG,) the benchmark quality wine of the region

“Denominaciones de Origen” (DO,)

the quality estate

wines “Vinos de Pago” (DO Pago,) and finally the

exceptional wine regions “Denominaciones de Origen Calificada” (DOCa.) It is this DOCa category that Rioja and

Priorat have been awarded for consistently producing

exemplary wines throughout the decades. Rioja was the first region to reach DOCa status in 1991 and Priorat was only recently promoted to this level in 2009.

So, how can Rioja be so renowned and Priorat so seemingly

obscure? While Priorat might rival Rioja in quality, it certainly can’t compete for quantity. Priorat is a very small

area geographically, but the age of the grape vines is the major reason for the limited amount of wine produced. Old

grape vines have notoriously low yields and the majority of the wines in this area are between 60-100 years old.

The other factor preventing a huge annual bounty is the

inauspicious climate. Although this region is near the Mediterranean, a string of mountains creates very hot and

dry conditions by preventing the favorable maritime climate from moderating the weather.

Despite all the obstacles, the tough environment and low yield does have its advantages. The flavors in the grapes

are concentrated and carry the outspoken essences of

licorice and tar from the black and red slate soils directly into the wine. The soils are also flecked with mica particles that impart distinctive complimentary mineral notes as

well. Although some international grape varieties are grown in this region, the quintessential red Priorat blend is

comprised

of

Garnacha

and

Cariñena

grapes.

Additionally, there are some white wines produced here as

well, mostly based on the Garnacha Blanca grape.

Although the wines of the Priorat are less prevalent than

their Rioja counterparts, it is well worth a few extra

minutes in the wine store to locate some of these exquisite wines as they make great additions to every wine cellar.

Joe came down in 2015 and spent eight months working and learning with JoAnn and Dan at the distillery. He went over

to Big Blue Brewing as the construction was finishing up, and

they opened the doors in October 2016.

JoAnn says she was “drinking some rum one night and

accounting background and Dan has a mechanical and who has experience in marketing, so we’ll see where he fits

in.”

How the Names Came About

JoAnn’s house sits along the Caloosahatchee River where she and her husband, along with their dog, enjoy the water and

spotting dolphins. Actually, it’s more like JoAnn and her

husband enjoy seeing the dolphins; their dog growls every time a dolphin comes to the surface for air.

“I went to bed one night,” she says, “then I heard my dog

growling. I woke my husband up thinking someone was trying

to break in. He said, ‘No one is trying to break in, it’s that damn wicked dolphin.’ And I said, ‘Wicked dolphin, I like that.’”

While visiting New York, she went to a family barbeque and

startled talking with her nephew, Dan, about opening a rum

distillery. He was studying to be a pipe fitter and has an

extensive mechanical background. JoAnn said, “He said he’d

like to think about it. Once winter hit, he made up his mind.”

It was not long after that, Dan was in Florida and Wicked Dolphin opened their doors.

Big Blue Brewing came about from Joe and Dan’s enthusiasm of brewing beer. JoAnn said, “There was a big interest in

brewing beer. Then this building came up, which is pretty

much the cornerstone of downtown; it’s a great location. We

For Big Blue Brewing, they went through a lot names, “but one day out on

the boat,” says JoAnn, “we were looking at the sky and the water out in the Gulf. I said, ‘Wow. It’s big and blue.’”

All three say Big Blue is not about any sports team. JoAnn pointed out when there is a New York Giants game on, all the fans show up. When there’s a

Michigan Wolverines game on, the fans show up. “We didn’t realize how many different avenues there were with Big Blue,” says Dan.

Growing Up and Being a Twin

Joe grew up working in restaurants. “I would start out as a dishwasher, then

prep-cook, server, and even do bookkeeping,” he says. “When I moved down here, this was just a great fit.”

Dan says, “I was always tinkering with stuff and putting things together. I

actually worked at a couple of distilleries and was able to bring that experience here. For a couple of months, I even had a mentor who came to

Wicked Dolphin and shared his knowledge with me hands on.” When it comes

to distilling, he says, “it’s just like cooking, take a couple of ingredients and mix them together and see what you get.”

Joe and Dan have many stories of working together, being twins, and

confusion with customers. “All day long people confuse us,” says Joe. “I get customers who go to the distillery for a tour, then come here {Big Blue

Brewing] for lunch. They see me and ask ‘How did you get from the distillery

to here so fast?’ I have to explain to them that there are two of us.”

Dan mentioned when both of them worked at the distillery, a customer would be talking to one of them, then turn around and do a double-take. JoAnn was

quick to call them both out and said sometimes they switch on purpose.

Joe says some of the funnier moments are when “my brother will have a conversation with a customer, then come back into the kitchen, and when I

walk out they try to resume the conversation and I have to explain that was

my brother you were talking to. Then they challenge us, so we both have to come out and go to their table.”

Working With Passion

When it comes to operating a restaurant, “You do every aspect of the job,”

says Dan. “It’s rewarding to see the number of people who come through our

facilities and enjoy themselves. We have great people who visit us over and

over at both facilities. That is what lets you know your hard work is paying off.”

“It’s the whole creative process and every day it’s something different,” says

Joe. When Joe has some down time, he likes to hit Sanibel and relax at the beach where he says, “you won’t be able to reach me for the day.”

The Termini twins also enjoy a round a golf, but scheduling time to be on the

18

links is a bit challenging. Dan says, “Every weekend we say, ‘Let’s try to get

CapeStyle Magazine│April 2017

out and go golfing.’ It hasn’t happened since October.” Dan is recently married and he and his wife are expecting a child, so a lot of his free is spent preparing for the baby.

Every Friday at Big Blue, there is a new craft beer introduced, with Mug members being

able to sample the new creation an hour before the public can.

One of Big Blue Brewing’s most creative beers to date has been the Peanut Butter and Jelly

beer. It has won an award for best beer. It’s actually name is Peanut Butter and Jealous.

After it hit the tap, it was gone six hours later.

“Our IPAs and house beers are usually customer favorites,” says Joe. “We did a milk chocolate porter that went over very big. When it comes to food, people love our burgers,

our steak sandwiches, and our flatbreads.”

“We really focus on craft cocktails here,” says JoAnn. “They are very unique and we make

all the mixers ourselves. We squeeze our own juices and make our own Bloody Mary mix.

What keeps everything fresh and unique is that we can experiment here. We don’t want to

do or have the same things every day. Our philosophy down here is to use the best

ingredients we can and have some fun with it.”

The Future

When it comes to handing the reins to her nephews, JoAnn has nothing but confidence in

each of them. “I know their character, I know what they’re capable of doing and I feel very

comfortable that it’s in the family. I’m very happy that things are working out.” She is hoping soon to cut her schedule down from six days a week to only four.

Dan is excited with where Wicked Dolphin is and where it’s headed. They were recently named the number one distillery for 2016 by USA Today, and Business of the Year 2016

by the News-Press. “Our goal,” says Dan, “is to keep working hard at it and see where this journey takes us to.”

“We [Big Blue Brewing] are still very new,” says Joe. “We are still working out a couple of

kinks here and there, but people love it here. We have live entertainment, trivia night, and

we want to watch it as it keeps growing. One goal is to look into distributing our beer into local restaurants and to also just establish ourselves in the community.”

“We treat customers like family,” says Dan. “We try to be as friendly as possible and we

get a lot of repeat customers.”

Each establishment also prides itself on using fresh, local ingredients. Joe even mentioned

that the kitchens don’t have microwaves. “We want to provide a good meal, an honest

meal,” he says.

At Wicked Dolphin, their spiced rum is made with honey from Walker Farms in North Fort Myers, while their coffee and other supplies are purchased within the community. Rum

from the Wicked Dolphin Distillery is available in nearly 3,500 locations through the state

of Florida, including local package stores in Cape Coral. And they are not sticking to just rum, points out JoAnn.

more than rum. Our sales will increase because of this expansion. We are also

Bu s in es P2 Personal Training is a new business in Cape Coral, having just opened in December, but personal training is not new to the owner, Patty Cummings. Patty has been a personal trainer for 7 years. She moved to Cape Coral from Peoria, Illinois three years ago, and has been looking to set up business here ever since. P2 Personal Training, home of Astro-Durance Bungee Training, may have opened just a few months ago, but business is booming! Based on weightless total body bungee concepts, it allows you to perform muscle movements that would not have been possible without the bungee. There is no stress or pain on the joints. For those with ideal weight and youth, Astro-Durance is the best workout to optimize your body’s peak performance. It is safe and fun for all ages!

As a professional and a working mother, Cape Coral allows Patty to raise her children in “a community friendly environment where people work together to help others.” She loves the canals that flow through Cape Coral. “To me, it lends a taste of Italy. There is easy access to novelty islands and the gulf shores. But most of all, living in The Cape is like being on a never-ending vacation!”

Patty is a member of the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral, active with Cape Christian Fellowship Church, and works closely with “Ark of Hope for Children”, a nonprofit organization that helps fight child abuse.

Tax Identity Fraud By Rebecca A. Ross

Tax identity fraud commonly refers to the practice of using a stolen Social Security number to file a false tax return and claim a

fraudulent refund. This scam costs taxpayers billions of dollars per year and can ruin its victims’ finances and credit rating. This month’s Wealth Management Insights looks at what you can do to protect yourself from this kind of fraud.

1. Protecting physical documentation is essential.

• Monitor your bank and credit card statements. If you don’t regularly

reconcile each purchase, at least make sure the merchants listed on

each statement are ones you have visited.

• Safeguard your Social Security card, all tax documents and all bank

and credit card receipts. File what you need and shred what you don’t.

• Update your employer, financial institutions and the Internal

Revenue Service each time you move. Having tax documents mailed

to an old address opens the door to tax identity theft.

2. Consider what information you’re making available online.

• Any information you enter – like usernames and passwords – on public Wi-Fi can be easily intercepted. Don’t reuse passwords and

save sensitive financial transactions like electronic

banking or tax return filing for when you’re on a secure, private connection.

• While you once could identify email scams from spelling and other

language errors, criminals have become more sophisticated over time. If you’re unsure of the validity of a request or are being pressured to act immediately, contact the institution offline.

• Safeguard your Social Security number. If con artists can link up a

24

name with a Social Security number, they have enough information

CapeStyle Magazine│April 2017

to file a fraudulent tax return. Remember, most legitimate

financial institutions will not ask for your Social Security number

online or over the phone.

3. Know when you’re being scammed.

• Be wary of anyone contacting you over the phone or by email

claiming to be from the IRS. The IRS will never initiate contact with you via telephone or email – only by letter.

• If the IRS receives two electronic returns for the same Social Security number, it will reject the second one. Filing your return

promptly can thwart would-be thieves.

• If the IRS notifies you of a second return filed on your behalf or a

discrepancy in your earned wages, it can pay to respond quickly.

Contact the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit and the three major credit reporting bureaus (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion) regarding potential fraudulent activity.

What you should do now:

While the potential for tax identity fraud can never be eliminated,

following a few commonsense guidelines can dramatically reduce your

likelihood of becoming a victim. Your Baird Financial Advisor has

additional insight into how you can keep your finances and identity

safe in an increasingly online world.

Get some! some

There’s not a lot of, if any, inspirational stories that didn’t start with “One day…” Here’s one of mine: “One day” a friend inspired me through a book he recommended. I was in my early twenties and not a big reader at the time. He promised that it was a quick read, and that it would change my life. I had known this guy for years and I asked why he waited until now to recommend this book. He was a great mentor and knew that I wasn’t ready for change until then.

The instructions were to find a peaceful quiet place with no distractions, sit under a tree, and read a book. The book was ‘Jonathan Livingston Seagull’ by Richard Bach. I had a motorcycle at the time and rode up the Sahara Mountains from Sacramento to Lake Tahoe, sat under a tree and opened the book. It took less than an hour to read, and it was truly a life changer.

The book and its story has various meanings depending on where you are in life. Jonathan was a seagull that didn’t want to sit on a dock and beg for scraps of food. He didn’t want to just “get by” with the flock. He wanted to be different, to discover new things, and he wanted to soar where other birds had never been.

Jonathan challenged himself as to how high and how fast he could fly, while the flock made fun of him for being different. Jonathan climbed higher than any gull ever had, then lost control on the decent, crashing into the water. Floating in the ocean, it would have been easy, and accepted by society, to say “I’ll never do that again.” Instead, he wondered what

28

Submitted By Jim Griffiths

would happen if he tucked his wings tight to his body and slowly eased them out on the way down. “Would this help maintain aerodynamics in a high-speed decent?” he wondered.

The best way to get me to do something is to tell me that I can’t do it, or that it simply can’t be done. Even if I attempt and fail, which has happened on countless occasions, the habit has paid off much more than not.

The story created a “half-time” in my life and the second half has been going ever since.

The story of Jonathan Livingston Seagull reminded me of how our friends will often encourage us to take routes of little or no risk. If they advise you to play it safe and you do, you’ll never know what could have been. No harm done, and they are safe. If they suggest that you do not step out of the box, and against their advice you do and you crash, they’re still safe. On the flip-side, if they advise you to take a chance and you crash, they could be to blame and the friendship may be on the line. Unless those friends are planning to pay your mortgage for the rest of your life, consider making your own decisions. And when you feel that the timing is right for you, get inspired.

A little secret about timing….. some people wait for it, and some go looking for it. If you truly want to separate yourself from the herd, don’t wait for things to happen. Go get inspired!
