BEER
September 22, 2018 is the official kick-off for the world famous Oktoberfest in Munich. It will last for two weeks and end on
October 7. It’s known around the world as a place to drink copious amounts of beer and celebrate in traditional garb with various
drinking competitions.
From The Brewer.......
The story behind Oktoberfest is what some may imagine is the genesis of this great german tradition. as it goes, the future King
of Bavaria, Crown prince ludwig, was to wed Therese of Sassonia-Hildburghausen on October 12, 1810. They held a large public event in a meadow near the gates of Munich to celebrate the occasion. people enjoyed the event so much it turned into the annual Oktoberfest tradition that we know and love. To this day, the event is still held in the very same meadow, called
Theresienweise, which translates to “Therese’s Meadow” and, in the local dialect, the meadow and the festival are known as Wies’n.
as you may have surmised, in line with our last article and in german style, every beer that is served at Oktoberfest has to conform to the Reinheitsgebot and has to be brewed in the city of Munich.
During this event, vast quantities of beer are consumed. However, most of the beer served is actually a blond lager as opposed
to the Oktoberfest beer we are starting to see become seasonally available everywhere. The Oktoberfest beer itself is also called
a Marzenbier or “march beer.” Originally, it was a very broad term used to describe any beer brewed in March and stored in
caves to keep cool for consumption throughout the summer. at the end of the summer, the barrels would be emptied (people would get together and drink it all) for the coming brewing season.
Today, Marzen or Oktoberfest beer symbolically capture that shift of climate from warm summer evenings to the cool crisp of Fall. The beer should capture that crispness along with the color of Fall, a beautiful copper-orange from the Vienna and Munich
malts used to brew it. an Oktoberfest should taste and smell roasty with subdued german Noble hops, letting the malt shine
through. Overall, this beer should be crisp, malty, and very refreshing, made to drink on the cool crisp evenings that lead into the Fall season.
One of my favorite examples of the style is one of Sierra Nevada’s yearly collaborations. last year, they collaborated with Brauhaus
Miltenberger to make an Oktoberfest. This year, they worked with Weihenstephaner, which is purportedly the oldest brewery in
the world, founded 1040. It is located in Freising, Bavaria, on the former site of the Weihenstephan abbey and they still brew according to the Reinheitsgebot.
The Oktoberfest collaboration this year was one of two. The first being a german Hefeweizen brewed at Weihenstephaner Brewery in Friesing. This was a very important and special brew because it is the first time that Weihenstephaner has invited an outside brewery in to brew with them.
you’ll find many Oktoberfest beers on the market, both local and international. They will range in color and taste from relatively
light to bold, roasty, and deep copper. Some will be sweeter than others, depending on the amount of Vienna or Munich malt
OKTOBeRFeSTMUN use. Vienna typically lends a spicier, biscuit-y aroma and flavor, while Munich malt will impart more of a graininess to the beer.
If you’re looking for a local event featuring some of the best brewers in Florida, who often happen to be home-brewers, on
October 20th from 5 – 8 pm, Scotty’s Bierworks is hosting “a Tour of germany.” The leftcoast brewers, a local homebrew club,
will be pouring german inspired beers. Some styles that may be available are Festbier, Oktoberfest, Berliner Weisse, Hefeweizen, Kolsch, and a Rauchbier.

(Third Country Nationals) convoys. Nick was part of the reserves with the 179th and the 465th Transportation Companies.
Originally from Buffalo, Ny, Nick has lived in Cape Coral for 3½ years. For Nick, the best part of living in the Cape is “no snow, lots of people, and lots of things to do outside.”
Nick is married to Kelly and they have 2 kids, Joseph (8) and layla (7.) They also have 2 cats and 2 dogs, a white husky named lily and Nick's Service Dog, Camo.
Nick is a disabled veteran. He is actively involved in veterans causes, including the Tampa Bay Warriors
Veterans Ice Hockey and Wolfhounds legacy Corp (WlC), a local non-profit organization that rescues dogs, trains them as Service Dogs, and partners them with veterans suffering from pTSD.
Nick's dog Camo is a graudate of the founding class of Wolfhounds legacy. Nick got Camo at 10 months
old, then worked for over 8 months training Camo three days a week as a Service Dog. getting involved with WlC gave Nick a sense of purpose and comraderie, like his life in the military. after Camo graduated,
Nick found himself helping other vets as they train their Service Dogs with WlC. “It helps my state of mind
meeting other vets with common ground,” says Nick. “If I can help any vet not become a statistic, that
makes me feel good.”
Nick does not like to have the spotlight on himself, he'd rather the focus be on the military personnel that we have lost. That attitude is what exemplifies the sacrifices being made by our veterans. and that makes Nick a Hometown Hero!

WINE
a major role in the German wine classification system. To that end, Germany’s wines are sorted and graded based on geographic location and the degree of ripeness of the grapes at harvest.
Grape ripeness is critical to the process of making wine. Grapes are crushed, resulting in juice with a high sugar content. Yeast is added to the juice where it consumes the sugar. As it consumes the sugar, it creates alcohol as a byproduct. If there is not enough sugar, the percent of alcohol in the wine will be low, so a vintner may need to add table sugar to increase the alcohol content. This process is called chaptalization and is allowed only in the lower quality levels of Germany’s wine level designations. There are three main categories in the German wine classification system: Wein, Geschützte Geographische Angabe (GGA) and Geschützte Ursprungsbezeichnung (GU).
Wein consists of basic table wine in which the grapes can be from any location and chaptalization is allowed.

very October, beer lovers around the globe grab their growlers and tip their hats to Germany’s world class offerings. What does a devoted oenophile do? Celebrate Germany’s stellar wine selections! How does one do that? Aside from simply enjoying the vino, demystifying Deutschland’s distinct wine classification system is a good start.
Wine classification systems are created on the national level. Since there is no worldwide regulatory body standardizing or policing how this is done, they vary widely from country to country. Old World wine powerhouses, such as France and Italy, have very stringent regulations governing which grape varietals can be grown and what production processes can be used in a given location.
Conversely, New World wine kingpins, such as the USA and Australia, are mainly concerned with enforcing only that a wine is properly labeled with the place where the grapes were grown. Additionally, a myriad of other wine producing countries adhere to countless variations overlapping these two ideologies.
In Germany, environmental conditions are harsh and not ideally suited for growing grapes, meaning wine makers must labor assiduously to produce their wines. The cold, frost-prone climate makes it extremely difficult for grapes to ripen and develop sufficient sugar content. This makes ripeness, or sugar content, a main factor in determining grape quality and, therefore, plays
12
OCTOBER2018
Wines included in GGA must have at least 85% of the grapes grown in one of Germany’s major wine regions and chaptalization is allowed.
GU is subdivided into two categories: Qualitätswein and Prädikatswein. Wines in the Qualitätswein subcategory must come from one of thirteen specified wine growing regions and have approved grape varieties that meet a minimum sufficient ripeness. Despite this, chaptalization is still allowed at this level. Prädikatswein has the same requirements as Qualitätswein, but chaptalization is not allowed.
The wines that make it to the Prädikatswein category are further ranked by grape ripeness: Kabinett wines are light with only 710% alcohol, Spätlese wines feature more intense flavors as they are harvested after a specified date, Auslese wines have a required sugar level before harvest so their alcohol content can reach 14% or more, Beerenauslese (BA) wines are sweet dessert wines, Eiswein wines are made from grapes harvested after freezing on the vine, so much of the water in the grapes is discarded as ice, leaving a very high sugar content, and Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA) wines are some of the world’s most renowned dessert wines derived from grapes left on the vines until they have shriveled into raisins. Although the highest categories of quality are reserved for sweet wines, Germany does boast excellent dry wines and there is a vast amount of diversity in flavor profiles amongst the country’s selections. So, don’t be intimidated by the lengthy monikers. Head down the German aisle on your next trip to the wine shop and pick up a delicious selection to ‘cheers’ with your friends at an Oenophile’s Oktoberfest!

Celebrating
NATIONAL FOODIE
Review by Rachel Roth
MONTH
Everybody loves pizza! This month is National Pizza Month, so thought it would be a good time to enjoy one of my favorite things to eat. Unfortunately, there’s too many pizza places in this town and I couldn’t get to all of them. Apologies for not including them all, but here are the ones I was able to enjoy (in alphabetical order.) BACKSTREETS SPORTS BAR 915 SE 47th Terrace, (239) 945-7555 It’s in the name, a sports bar, so don’t expect fine dining or a quiet pizzeria with Italian chefs. Backstreets is full of fun energy, great for a night out.
Their drink menu probably outweighs their food menu, accompanied by a number of beers and wines, plus a recommended “Shot of the Month.” Their food menu is just as good with a different discount every day of the week and the reported “Best Happy Hour in Town,” according to them, which they might be right about.
Getting to the pizza, I’m going to admit that I don’t remember that much about what I ate because everything else about the visit took over. What I do recall about it was that it was the type of pizza you’d expect in a sports bar, simple and laid back, but well made. A great pizza to order for a Superbowl party.
Sunday – Thursday 11 am to 2 am, Friday - Saturday 11 am to 3 am. Limo service: (239)-314-9040 but only after 6PM.

OCTOBER2018
CHICAGO PIZZA 1341 SE 47th Terr, (239) 945-2262 Everyone in Cape Coral probably already knows about this place. Most have driven
by it or seen it on the “Best of Cape Coral” list for three years in a row. It’s small on the outside with a dinky parking lot, but it must have a Harry Potter enlarging spell casted around it because, when you walk inside, it seems to have added on two extra sizes. Comfortable and quaint, a pleasant atmosphere for easy relaxation.
Chicago is famous for deep dish pizza, so of course they have that. But they also have thin crust, which personally I usually like best, but if you’re coming to this restaurant, I suggest going for the deep dish. It’s clearly designed to be on a thick crust. The sauce and cheese and everything combined were fantastic, but it was just too much for a thin crust to handle. They have only a few toppings, but it felt like a supreme made in a gourmet restaurant or in Hell’s Kitchen.
Monday – Thursday 11:30 am to 9 pm, Friday 11:30 am to 10 pm, Saturday 12 pm to 10 pm, Sunday 12 pm to 9 pm.
DANTE’S PIZZA 900 SW Pine Island Rd, (239)-800-2112 The fact that its name matches the name of my second favorite poet has nothing to do with how much I love this place. It’s the perfect name for a restaurant that sells coal-fired crust pizza that’s thin and crunchy without tasting burnt.
If you like crust and extra cheese, I wouldn’t go here. It runs more on flavors, herbs, oils and such. Dante's is one of the few places in Cape Coral where you can eat half a large pie and not feel overstuffed.
They sell excellently flavored wings dressed in lemon, rosemary and olive oil which are baked instead of fried. This makes them tender, and I advise everyone to try the garlic sticks. These are far better than any bread sticks I’ve ever had. Soft and buttery on the inside, salted with garlic on the outside. Monday – Thursday 11 am to 9 pm, Friday – Saturday 11 am to 10 pm, Sunday 11 am to 9 pm.
DON ANTHONY’S 303 NE 3rd Ave, (239)-673-8023 Don Anthony is either a huge movie fan or he’s appealing to film buffs.
You walk in and are surrounded by Vito and Michael Corleone from The Godfather.
It’s a small place with maybe six or seven tables max, decorated with maps of Italy for placemats. Don Anthony’s is one of my favorite pizza places, but it doesn’t get nearly the amount of attention it deserves.
LEONE’S 916 SE 14th Ave, (239)-458-0013 With cafeteria style ordering in a deli atmosphere, it’s impossible to get more casual than this. The woman behind the counter took our order in a “no funny business” attitude with a thick Sicilian
accent. While it almost frightened the leisurely Saturday out of us, they get the orders out fast. It’s set in a busy work area where lots of people come in during their lunch break.
Don Anthony's pizza deserves some kind of award. First, there are so many options, complete with delicious Italian desserts such as cannoli’s, tiramisu, and limoncello cake (one of the best limoncello’s I’ve ever had.)
Leone’s is not a leisurely dining experience, but more of a quick-paced snack with well-prepared pizza. An authentic Italian taste that’s hard to find, a bold flavor created from olive oil, oregano and pureed tomatoes all set on dough that was baked to perfection.
Monday – Thursday 11 am to 10 pm, Friday – Saturday 11 am to 11 pm, Sunday 11 am to 10 pm
Closed Sundays & Mondays, Tuesday Thursday 9 am to 6 pm, Friday 9 am to 7 pm, Saturday 10 am to 5 pm.
The pizza is on a whole other level, the “baby bear” of pizza. Not too thin or thick, not greasy or dry, not over-cooked or soggy, but just right. This place should be packed full of people daily, but it’s hidden among a little group of buildings that’s impossible to be seen from a speeding car.
We had two cannolis with it. To be
honest, I had never had a cannoli before so I’m not much of an expert, but I’m sure they can’t all be that good! I just about swallowed these things whole. You can get one with almond cream, pistachio, lemon, vanilla, and probably some others I’m forgetting.
LUCIANO’S PIZZA 728 SW Pine Island Rd, (239)-360-8112 I don’t want to call this a bad place because it’s not. The dough was the best part, good enough to convince me that Luciano’s should be baking bread instead of pizzas. Crust was near perfect, it was just everything else that didn’t work. There was just too much.
We got a small vegetarian and, while it looked like artwork, the minute I picked up a slice the entire top fell off. Cheese, spinach, olives, mushrooms, and tomato sauce skidded down into a sad lump pile in the center of the box. The cheese was great though. I don’t know what brand of mozzarella they used, but I’m going to look for it. After a few bites, it developed a unique aftertaste that I usually feel after eating key lime pie; not an altogether bad thing in my book. Then, to top it off, because of the oily cheese and abundance of garden-fresh sauce, it got soggy on the bottom. I know a lot of people don’t seem to mind that, and if you don’t then kudos to you, but I’m not one of them. Monday – Thursday 11 am to 9 pm, Friday – Saturday 11 am to 10 pm, Sunday 12 pm to 8 pm.

MARIA’S PIZZERIA
1224 SE 46th Lane, (239)-945-6006 CapePizza.com I went here once a long time ago and got their linguini in clam sauce, which I remember was mouthwateringly delicious. I went back again this time for the pizza and it was also a well-prepared, savory dish. The interior is designed to be a cross somewhere between fine dining and remote Italy. The result is a simple elegance tailor-made for a Saturday dinner, comfortable with a sweet waitress who did whatever she could to recommend various dishes.
Maria’s pizza is one of the best out there because it’s found a middle ground in preparation. Pleasant with the right amount of everything. Overall, the perfect place to go and relax with a glass of wine and a large pizza to share. It’s fine dining that doesn’t cross the line into actual fine dining. Open 4 pm to 9 pm everyday.
MONA LISA 3108 Santa Barbara Blvd, (239)-673-9309 Compacted within a small building core a limited number of tables, a kitchen, a counter and a tiny rack of wine. It's takeout meets high-class. Plastic cups for your beer, and food made with proficient hands. There was only one man behind the counter, single handedly taking the orders, cooking and serving them. I don’t know if this is a daily thing, but for one man doing it all, the food got to our table quicker than I could read the labels of chips he had on the front counter.

Everything was wonderful, not just the pizza. The bread on their sandwiches was, as my picky food companion called it, “the best bread I’ve ever had” and, trust me, she eats lots of bread.
I know it’s a pizza place and I’m reviewing the pizza, which was delicious, but I really went crazy over their fries. My mouth is watering just thinking about them again. Plain with only a dash of salt, fried to a light crisp and still managing to taste like a potato. Have you ever eaten the fries at McDonalds and thought, “this has to be some otherworldly food”? Well, Mona Lisa’s fries are better. Monday – Saturday 11 am to 9 pm, Sunday 4 pm to 9 pm.
NICE GUYS 1334 Cape Coral Pkwy E, (239)-549-7542 I went to Nice Guys for a review on vegan restaurants that I wrote earlier this year and fell in love with their vegan menu. At the time, I didn’t try their regular pizzas because I was only doing vegan options then. And it was the greatest vegan pizza I’ve ever had, kicking any dairy-free frozen pizza out of the ballpark.
I went back again to try their regular menu and, even though I didn’t think I could love this place more than I already did, it went from being a fantastic pizzeria to being one of the best, if not
Nice Guys is for anyone wanting to try something new. They sell the oddest topping combinations with jokey names. One is called “A Sweet Corn Named Desire” (movie fans should get this reference) and another named “Don’t Worry Brie Happy.” I had a marvelously superb treasure of heaven called “General Tso’s Pizza” that had fried chicken, broccoli, pineapples, garlic and a sweet type of hot sauce with a spicy
aftertaste. We also got an item called a “Truffle Shuffle” (any Goonies fans out there?) covered in Parmesan cheese. Normally, I hate Parmesan cheese and the “Truffle Shuffle” was absolutely covered in it, but it was FANTASTIC. If you’re not the type to eat in bars, then order it over the phone and pick it up as carry out. They’re the friendliest people, all smiles and easy going. Normally the call-in orders are ready in twenty or thirty minutes.
Closed Monday, Tuesday – Saturday 4 pm to 1:30 am, Sunday 12 pm to 1:30 am.
OVERTIME PIZZERIA 1708 Cape Coral Parkway, (239)-541-3367 Busy atmosphere and a crowded lunch hour make the service a little slow, but no less accommodating. They’re a sports bar so it has all the usual sport bar qualities; a TV set for every booth, one huge TV near the bar, a loud and amusing tone produced by sizeable dinner parties, and a large menu catering to the different varieties of people who come in on weekends. To satisfy this large clientele, they have a broad menu consisting of mixed drinks, wines and beer (some brewed in Cape Coral and Fort Myers,) a great many types of pizzas from which to choose, and countless sandwiches, burgers and other entrees to try if you don’t like pizza. It’s called a pizzeria, but there’s much more than just pizza there.
It seems like a place that started selling pizza in the beginning, but then decided to add a bunch of stuff to their menu because there are so many options it’s hard to believe it’s called Overtime Pizzeria and not just Overtime Sports Bar. However, by the taste of their pizza, I think they’ve earned the right to be called a pizzeria.
I’ll admit I didn’t expect much coming from this place, pizza-wise. Being a sports bar, I assumed they’d have good sandwiches and
wings but average pizza. I did not expect something so good. Ordering the small vegetarian, I got a fairly large pizza heartily covered in broccoli, sliced grape tomatoes, spinach leaves, and mushrooms, that proved me wrong and tasted fantastic.

PARADISE PIZZA 842 Lafayette Street, (239)-945-1555 This place is set in a small dining area that gives off a homey feel. It’s one long hallway with booths pressed against the wall near stacks of empty pizza boxes in the back, creating an endearingly disheveled look.
The pizza itself wasn’t bad, but …cheese attack! I understand that there is a high
demand for extra cheese on everything, but this place should be called Paradise Cheese. There was so much cheese it looked like a yellow spider-web clinging to bread as the slices struggled to separate.
Nevertheless, it wasn’t bad pizza, I’m just not one to smother my dough in mozzarella and cheddar. I’m sure anyone who wants a simple pizza with lots of cheese will be happy going here. We ordered a large and they weren’t stingy on the size. It was a generous amount. Excellent service, good fried ravioli’s, and fantastic wings. Pizza was good, but come for the wings as they stole the show.

FITNESS
Benefits of
HIIT
(High Intensity Interval Training)
Submitted By Kari Fundingsland/Owner of Kari Kardio Group Fitness Center What is this HIIT workout that is the latest buzzword in fitness? These workouts consist of high intense bursts of activity followed by
a less intense exercise or even a recover or rest. A good example of what I might do in a boot camp class is have my members do
20 seconds of squats (with or without weights) and as many repetitions as they can in the 20 seconds. They will then take a 10 second rest and then repeat that for a total of 8 rounds and it is only 4 minutes long!
What are benefits of this type of training?
1. You burn more fat and calories since you put your body into hyper drive by increasing your heart rate and asking more and more from your body. Blast those calories!
2. Great for your Heart! By getting your heart rate up in an anaerobic zone “where it is hard to talk” It gives you that cardio training that makes your heart work harder.
3. You keep your lean muscles and loose fat! By doing a HIIT training workout with weights, you will keep your lean muscle mass opposed to a long, steady state run where you tend to loose muscle.
4. You can workout in less time! By training at this high intensity you do not have to work out for 1-2 hours in the gym. With interval training, you are pushing yourself as hard as you can go in a shorter amount of time.
5. It does not require a gym! That’s right, you can do body weight exercises with the timed intervals! Example: squats, lunges, push ups, all can be done with no equipment, just your body weight!
6. It’s fun and never gets boring. By switching up the time, duration and exercises, you never get bored with this workout! And you are guaranteed to get results!

MOVIE REVIEW
Halloween is my favorite holiday. It’s the only time of the year when you can dress like a wacko, walk around in a witch’s hat,
howl at the moon, pig out on candy and binge watch horror
movies and not be judged for it. This means it’s a very festive
time for me because I want to do all that anyway. Do that any
other day and you’ll get the typical “what’s wrong with you” face, trust me.
So, in honor of that, I’m bringing up a movie that every
Halloween fan should see, Trick ‘r Treat. An 82-minute horror movie, it's not only an impressive addition to the genre, but also
a uniquely written story interwoven within the true origins of All Hallows Eve, aka Halloween. Directed and written by Michael Dougherty in 2007, Trick ‘r Treat is an anthology horror film made up of five different stories taking place on Halloween night.
The spirit of Halloween, Samhain or “Sam” comes out to enforce the rules of All Hallows Eve that society has come to disregard over
the years. Rule one is to hand out offerings to trick ‘r treaters; rule two is to always wear a costume; rule three is to never blow out
a jack-o-lantern before midnight; and rule four is to respect the dead. At least one character in each story breaks one of these rules
and pays the price. Of course Sam never tells people these rules, he just expects everyone to know them.
Child actor Quinn Lord, whose face we never see, plays Sam, an innocent trick ‘r treater who makes an appearance periodically throughout the film. His presence is chilling, sinister, overpowering and slightly adorable. What makes Sam even more menacing is
how he really does act like a child, including shuffling his feet and laughing when he plays a prank. However, he’s not innocent nor
is he a child, but he is the very symbol of Halloween.
I must say that the best part of Trick ‘r Treat is its twist on the Red Riding Hood story. I won’t give anything away, but let me just say it was spectacular! Anna Paquin stars in this particular story and shines as a true scream queen.
I will warn you that this is a horror movie, and as tradition goes, it's scary and features blood. The first two sequences might be too much for some. I’m directing this comment toward those who don’t normally watch horror, but if you watch it regularly then nothing
in this movie should bother you. However, even if it is too much, I urge you to push through because everything after that is evidence
of an unbelievable work of genius.
Most Halloween flicks are slashers that just happen to take place on Halloween, or they’re just slashers without any relation to
anything in the month of October. Trick ‘r Treat is ALL about Halloween! It's swimming in glowing jack-o-lanterns and the phrase
“trick or treat.” I can’t imagine any horror fan not loving this movie. Smartly written with a terrific cast, wonderfully dark and scary, and a mysterious villain that only wants people to appreciate his holiday. He’s like a creepy Santa Claus.

Buddy and the family who adopted him. Buddy’s owners were a deaf couple and they had taught Buddy all his commands in sign language. After losing three Golden Retrievers in five years, it took awhile before I was ready to have another dog. Once I was ready, I decided to look for a Golden Retriever rescue since there are local rescues for all breeds.
After applying to rescue, I was turned down because I only had a fence on 3 sides of my yard and there was water on the fourth. Then, out of the blue, I received a call that there was a foster dog in Naples in need of a temporary home for two weeks while the foster family went on vacation. She had been a forced surrender, along with her 6 month old pup.
Molly is her name and the rest is history!
Golden Retrievers are very smart and considered “Velcro Dogs” by nature. Mine have all been like this, but Molly proved to be especially so. GRIN, the rescue from which I adopted Molly, has an Annual Reunion for all the families who have adopted dogs from them. The first one we attended, we met Molly’s puppy
She became the true “Velcro Dog” when my husband was diagnosed with cancer. Molly stayed by his side through all the treatments and surgery. Theirs was a special relationship, as he would say.
I recently found a tumor on Molly's stomach, which turned out to be a low grade cancer. I opted to have it removed despite her age. After losing my husband last year, I could not think of losing her as well. Molly is doing well and is back to her crazy energetic self. Hopefully she has a few good years left. My involvement with the Golden Rescue lead me to several local animal rescues and the new Cape Coral Animal Shelter. I have worked to raise money for them, and support many of their fundraising events.
Rescue, you won’t regret it. We have had a full life together, Yappy Hours, Golden Festivals, Reunions, dining at “Dog Restaurants,” a calendar girl and Gulfshore Mustang Club Mascot. I look forward to Molly and I enjoying her “Golden Years” together.

Filled with a light haze of smoke, this brightly colored house is
easy for kids to navigate (with or without their parents) and has
easy to read fire safety messages written on the walls. There will
also be Fingerprinting for Kids provided by CCPD and face painting.
Fire Station 7, 3942 Burnt Store Rd., and Fire Station 10, 3623
Gator Circle W., are CCFD Open House Stations. They welcome
visitors and will have Open House activities, including the scavenger hunt, available.
The Cape Coral Fire Department Open House will take place on Saturday, November 3 from 9am until 12pm. Mark your calendar for this fun and educational event!

COMMUNITY IN ACTION
Written by Dennis Rathbourn
Allen Manguson Head pro and Director of Golf at Coral Oaks Golf Club
“If you watch a game, it’s fun. If you play it, it’s recreation. If you work at it, it’s golf.” - Bob Hope Allen Manguson has been “working” at golf since 1989 when he obtained his PGA card and has been the head pro and Director of Golf at Coral
Oaks GC since 2005. Prior to that, he was head pro at Palmetto Pines from 1989 to March 2001. Allen is a 3rd generation Floridian from West
Palm Beach and is married with 2 sons, 29 and 33 years old. But you can
tell from talking to him that work for Allen is not really work, it’s his passion and he loves his job.
Allen was introduced to golf by his grandfather. A picture of him hangs
in Allen's office, along with a scorecard showing a score of 61. His
He was the head Pro at Palmetto Pines, here in the Cape. One of the
members, Chuck Thomas, a gruff individual with a harsh, dark voice, would always say to Allen, “one of these days Pro, I’m gonna have my friend Byron Nelson visit you.” (Chuck's nickname for Allen was “PRO.”)
Now, Byron Nelson is a legend in golf, and the annual Byron Nelson Golf Tournament in Texas is named after him. “I just laughed every time he
said this and never gave it much thought. Then, one Sunday evening,
sitting in my office, I was watching the final round of some golf
tournament when in walks Byron Nelson and his wife. They sat down and

proceeded to talk about golf for an hour and a half. When I asked what

Besides golf, Allen loves to fish and coach youth sports. He is also an
instructor at Coral Oaks and teaches beginners and old timers alike. When asked what he likes best about living in Cape Coral, he gets a little
choked up and says “it’s the best place to raise kids, and the quality of
life in this town can’t be beat.”
One of the achievements of which Allen is most proud is being on the Board of Directors of our local Junior
Golf Association. Coral Oaks GC is going to host its first ever Junior Golf Fundraiser on Saturday,
December 1, 2018. Proceeds from this tournament will
go toward funding their golf and scholarship
programs. Allen is involved in all these programs and events. A big part of his day is meeting with everyone
involved in hosting a big golf tournament and charity fundraiser.
Charity events in which Allen is involved include the “Tee Off for Takeoff”
golf tournament held in August. This event raises money for military
veterans to be flown to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorials dedicated
to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. The Storm Smart Cape Coral City Championship Golf Tournament is set for October
19-21. Alan was instrumental in getting this new sponsor for this annual
event.
All golfers have stories to tell and, like fishing stories, they get bigger and better over time. When I asked him what his favorite golf memory
or story was, his face lit up like a kid at Christmas. He began to tell me the following tale.

he was doing in Cape Coral (they had just driven all the way from Jacksonville,) he said that his friend, Chuck Thomas, had asked him to
Allen's favorite Florida golf courses are Calusa Pines and Jupiter Hills. I asked Allen if he could play a round of golf with anyone in the world,
who would it be. He didn’t hesitate. “First, my grandfather, then Fred Couples and Lee Trevino.” I have a funny feeling that Allen could keep
up with Trevino’s banter and probably put a smile on
Lee’s face. That’s the kind of guy Allen is.
Alan Manguson is a bigger than life personality.
Cape Coral is lucky to have him as their head pro and
director of golf at this gorgeous golf course. By the
way, another coup de grace was when Allen hired
Eric Oster as the new superintendent. Eric is a
magician and the new greens and lush fairways and new look are truly a sight to behold.
So, if you play golf and haven’t played Coral Oaks,
or just haven’t been out there lately, you owe it to
yourself to book a tee time. Allen will thank you personally if he’s not
out on the course giving lessons to junior golfers, signing contracts with
charity sponsors, checking out the menu at Knicker’s Pub, in a meeting
with City of Cape Coral Parks and Recreation, or a thousand other things
a head pro has on his menu.
Like Steve Jobs said, “the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work.” Alan is doing just that.
